Our teams in Atlanta focus on theoretical and application aspects of computer science with a strong focus on machine learning and the algorithmic foundations and theoretical underpinnings of deep learning, with applications to natural language understanding, machine perception, robotics, and ubiquitous computing and sensing.

Our teams in Cambridge work closely with academics at local universities as well as collaborators at local institutes with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. We accomplish this by releasing open source tools, publishing our work and sharing our findings with the academic community.

We work in close collaboration with academia, with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. A practical and rewarding introduction to AI

Google DeepMind’s Student Researcher Program offers placements across a number of teams, for research, engineering and science roles.

A placement offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with some of the world’s leading thinkers in AI and work on its application for social good. Our projects offer hands-on experience working collaboratively on projects that push the frontiers of AI and science.

Many research scientists work in teams with a variety of support staff, and they are found in a variety of industries, from pharmaceuticals to marine exploration.

Salary & benefits

If you’re currently studying for a research PhD, you can be awarded around £14,000 per year whilst you study. Postdoctoral research fellows tend to earn between £30,000 and £35,000 a year, whilst lecturers and professors tend to earn salaries around the £60,000 mark.

If you’re working in industry, however, as a research scientist you would be looking at a salary starting around £24,000, but which could rise above £40,000 in time and with career progress.

Working hours

Hours are completely dependent on where you work, but in a University you would be expected to work 9-5 Monday to Friday, whereas within industry you could be expected to work in more of a shift pattern, which might include evenings and weekends.

Depending on your field and specialty, you might also be expected to travel nationally and internationally, for conferences or working in particular locations.

You’re going to have to do Uni for this one, there’s no other way. You’ll need at least a 2.1 in your chosen science subject to begin with, and then you’d be expected to go on towards postgraduate qualifications.

Most employers will expect you to be working towards PhD level, or have already completed it, in order to become a research scientist. It is however, possible to begin working and studying part-time within some parts of the industry.

Whilst your training is mostly done at Uni level, and given the research nature of the job, is often done by yourself, there are people who are there to guide you along.

Job Description and Duties

THIS IS A STATEWIDE RECRUITMENT. THE INCUMBENT WILL BE HEADQUARTERED IN THE COUNTY NEAREST THE RESIDENCE OF THE SELECTED CANDIDATE. THE COUNTIES ARE:   Sacramento and Contra Costa.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by optimizing data and technology through improving collection and reporting of data from the CalREDIE program. The Research Scientist Supervisor II (RSS II) serves as Chief for the CalREDIE Surveillance Section, comprised of the SaPHIRE Unit (Lab Reporting and Quality Analytics Team) and the Electronic Case Reporting Unit. The RSS II coordinates and directs the development of plans, operational procedures, guidelines and recommendations, and education/trainings to improve the data received through SaPHIRE and CalREDIE for communicable disease surveillance. This position is required to travel up to 10%.

The incumbent works under the broad administrative direction of the Research Scientist Manager (RSM), Chief of Communicable Disease Emergency Response Branch.

Incumbents in this classification, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

Incumbents in this classification, who have evidence of being accepted for an examination for a Medical Specialty Certificate or Osteopathic Specialty Certificate shall receive 15.5% of monthly base salary. Incumbents in one of these classifications, who have evidence of being certified by an American Medical Specialty Board or American Osteopathic Specialty Board will receive 19.0% of monthly base salary.

Telework Information

The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

The Communicable Disease Emergency Response (CDER) Branch supports and increases the reach and effectiveness of the Division of Communicable Disease Control's (DCDC) preparation for and response to infectious disease emergencies, and infectious disease aspects of other disasters (e.g., fires, floods, earthquakes). CDER prepares for and assumes a leadership role in bioterrorism and other communicable disease emergencies with plans, guidelines, exercises, and interventions including community mitigation and infection prevention.

CDER develops and reviews policies and documents based on epidemiology and surveillance; public health planning, program implementation, and evaluation; and principles of effective communication and collaboration. CDER supports outbreak investigations, and leads investigations if requested, with other DCDC branches and programs.

CDER also coordinates the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange (CalREDIE), the statewide surveillance system for infectious diseases, outbreaks, and emergencies.
