A student might decide to take a thesis track if she/he wants to pursue a Ph.D. Also, if the students want to focus on careers where research and writing have a strong focus, the students opt for the thesis option. Research assistantships at the graduate level are also more often available to students who opt for the thesis option.

A student who might feel that writing is not one of their strengths might choose to go the non-thesis track. Likewise, a student who has other work commitments may find a non-thesis option more convenient.

Do you have any tips for deciding on a program?

I chose a thesis option because being able to conduct independent research was a big reason to go to graduate school. Also, showing the ability that I could do research was what afforded me research assistantships which meant that my tuition was paid for and I got a stipend that paid for expenses while I was in graduate school. This also allowed me the opportunity to work closely with the faculty mentor that provided me with the support and the accountability I wanted.

I would not recommend taking a non-thesis option if all the degree requires is for you to take courses. You have little to show in terms of your learning other than your grades unless you are already working on something on the side that does that for you and all you need is a certificate.

Opt for a non-thesis option if you can still work closely with a professor or on a project and if you'd rather be involved in multiple projects rather than focus on a single project. If you already have a good (informed) reason for choosing one over the other, go for it.

What's the most important thing to consider when choosing a program?

The most important thing to consider when choosing a program is getting excited about the projects that at least one of the faculty members are involved in. Do some research and see why you are excited about a particular work that at least one of the faculty members have been involved in.

Students should talk to other students and also reach out directly to the graduate coordinator and even individual faculty members. This means that students should have done prior homework and have some good questions ready. Asking good questions will get you at least halfway through to make the right decision.

Master's Thesis vs Non-Thesis for PhD Admissions Computational Sciences ( self.gradadmissions )

Hi Everyone,

I am starting my masters in applied math and am planning on applying to PhD programs in applied math and statistics after I graduate. My school offers a two-semester thesis/research option for those interested in pursuing a PhD. There is also a one-semester independent study/project course but this is less intensive. The problem is that if I enroll in the thesis, I have to wait until all required coursework is completed. So what would normally take me 2 years to complete (4 semesters + 1 summer term) would actually take 3 years with the thesis option (the final two semesters have to be dedicated to the thesis with no other courses). I would also lose out on some courses I'd be interested in taking, such as complex analysis and probability theory. I'm wondering how I would fare in PhD admissions if I don't have evidence of thesis work in my applications? For context, I've already published a few papers in peer-reviewed journals and am finalizing another one to submit this month; I would like to use this paper as my writing sample for my applications. So I do have research experience, but am more interested in the coursework since I'm transitioning away from my original major of economics. Should I take the extra time and do a solid thesis or should I just focus on building up decent coursework? Any advice would be really appreciated!

A thesis based masters would set you up much better than a non-thesis one would. It will give you more experience, more familiarity with the literature, more time honing your interests and research questions. 

People get into PhD programs all the time without a thesis or even a masters degree. But having done a thesis you will look like a better candidate. Not because you did a thesis, but because of what the act of doing the thesis helps your statements and CV. Plus what if you don’t get into a lab? That’s not unheard of at all, faculty are often reluctant to take on students who won’t be there very long and don’t have a lot of experience. 

I would guess you know this already. The question seems more “are you willing to risk getting rejected or not getting an offer from your dream programs by taking on less debt”. For some people the answer is a straightforward yes or no. It is fine either way, but know what you’re getting yourself into.

I heard of some master's degrees that are just M instead of MS or MA like Master of Mathematics or Master of Psychology. Apparently, this is due to it being non-thesis.

The program does have a research project that is sort of like a thesis. • 2 Oh, you mean a degree whose name is something like "Master of Mathematics" without using the word "science" or "art". I don't think people just use the single initial M for such degrees, do they? (Graduates of that program don't put "John Doe, M." on their business cards, do they?) In general the formal name of a degree is a very bad guide to the contents of the degree; the name of the degree is heavily influenced by local history and traditions (some extreme examples: a Master of Arts degree from Oxford is automatically awarded 21 terms after matriculation to anyone with an Oxford BA; the degree that qualifies one to practice medicine in the USA is a Doctor of Medicine, while in the UK it's typically a combined Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery; a Bachelor of Philosophy degree at Oxford is a two-year philosophy degree aimed at those with a first degree).

In the UK there are increasingly degrees called 'integrated masters' (or sometimes 'undergraduate masters') whose names fit the pattern you mention. These are generally four-year degrees, generally in fields like mathematics, science and engineering, which one enters without a previous degree and which aim to leave students in a position to embark on doctoral study. See this example from Manchester Metropolitan University. Individual degrees may or may not include a mandatory or optional thesis requirement.

Your question contains two slightly different issues; this is an answer only to the more superficial part, about the abbreviations. Hopefully it can help clear up the confusion this part is causing, and allow more focus on the more substantial issue, about the content of the degrees.

The degrees you describe as “just an M”, like MMath or MPhys are not usually thought of that way, hence the confusion in comments. MMath is short for “Master of Mathematics”, just like MA is short for “Masters of Arts”. Neither is “just an M” — they’re both an M of something. The difference in the abbreviations is because for historical reasons, Master of Arts and Master of Sciences are used for degrees in a wide range of subjects, and so are very common, and have shorter abbreviations; where as Masters of other subjects have to provide a bit more of the subject name in order to be intelligible.

So the other half of your question can be rephrased as: what typically are the differences between programmes called MA, and programmes called Masters in Subject — e.g. between an MA programme in a mathematics department, and an MMath programme?

Non thesis Masters

Hello! Does anyone have idea about the impact of non-thesis masters on the way to have PhD admiasion? This masters has only courseworks and required research credit where could be or could not be any project. So, possibly no publications too exept research experience. I will have this from a R1 university in Us in an Engineering major and am aiming for top 20/30 universities according to usnews for my same engineering major for upcoming Fall'25. Any experience or suggestion is highly appreciable :)

My research at Simon Fraser University delves into how African migration and cultural identity are portrayed in literature, focusing on the novel "Le ventre de l'Atlantique" by Fatou Diome. I examine how characters in the book navigate their sense of self and belonging in a new cultural context. By analyzing the author's writing techniques and the historical and social backgrounds of the story, I explore how these themes impact the characters' personal growth and identities.

Through TA-ships, I gained valuable experience in teaching, curriculum development, and student engagement, honing my communication and instructional skills.

What have been the most valuable lessons you've learned along your graduate student journey (or in becoming a graduate student)?

During my graduate journey, the most valuable lessons I've learned include the importance of resilience and adaptability, the value of effective communication, and the necessity of interdisciplinary thinking. Resilience and adaptability have helped me navigate the challenges and setbacks inherent in advanced research.

How do you approach networking and building connections in and outside of your academic community?

I make it a point to attend relevant academic events and workshops. These provide valuable opportunities to meet peers, share my research, and learn from others in my field.
