1. IvyPanda Generator
We analyzed the drawbacks of other tools to create the best title page generator. You won’t find any ads or pop-ups, and it’s completely free to use.
In addition, it works with the most popular formatting styles: APA7, APA6, MLA9, Chicago, and Harvard. All you have to do is complete the required fields in the form and press the button “Generate a title page.” That’s it! You get the result immediately, without solving the captcha, providing an email, or registration. Now, you can insert the cover page into your writing project.
For your convenience, the IvyPanda team has also created hints and guides on creating a title page manually.
2. MLA & APA Title Page Generator
StandoutEssay offers another good title page generator with multiple styles available. Although the tool’s name contains only the most popular formats —MLA and APA, this title page maker actually allows you to create cover pages in eight different styles. You can download your title page as a Word document.
No registration or payment is needed to use this tool. Moreover, below the tool, StandoutEssay has provided a helpful guide on the formatting differences between APA and MLA.
3. StudyCorgi APA Title Page Generator
StudyCorgi’s APA Title Page Generator is a free online tool that allows you to create title pages in the five most popular citation styles. To generate your cover page, just fill in the blanks with your information and click the button to download the result as a Word file.
The website also offers a helpful guide on formatting the title page of student and professional papers in APA.
4. CiteFast
CiteFast is another free title page generator with a straightforward design. With this tool, you can create a cover page in four styles: APA6, APA7, MLA, and Chicago. Just enter your paper title, name, institution, and course and click the button to see the result. Then, you can copy the generated title page and paste it into your document.
One drawback of this tool is that it has many annoying ads. Also, if you need a cover page formatted according to Harvard or Turabian styles, this tool won’t be helpful.
5. StudyCrumb Title Page Creator
If you are looking for a modern ad-free tool with a user-friendly design, perhaps the StudyCrumbTitle Page Creator fits your needs. It ranked fifth in the IvyPanda title page creator’s ranking.
StudyCrumb allows its users to generate title pages in MLA, APA, and Chicago. However, they do not mention the exact editions of each style, so users have to guess. The page contains a detailed step-by-step guide on how to use the web app but no formatting style information.
The online tool is free and provides the results in .doc format. No registration is required.
The only paid tool in the IvyPanda review is Perrla, which took sixth place. This tool has add-ins for MS Word and runs inside the app helping you to format the document in APA6, APA7, or MLA8. It also works well with online documents.
There is an auto-fill reference wizard, which helps you search for articles, books, and websites without typing. Other features include, reference autosyncing, automated formatting of references, page margins, table of contents, headings, citations, and more.
Among the drawbacks, there is no common formatting style. The app subscription costs $49/year, however, you can try it for free—Perrla has a 30-day trial period.
7. Bibliography Makers
The website Bibliography Makers has a helpful tool named APA 7 Title Page Generator. It does right what its name says: generates title pages formatted according to the APA7 style.
To get your cover page, you should fill in all the blanks marked with an asterisk. If you make a mistake, don’t worry: the website allows you to edit your title page before downloading. You can save the result as a Word file.
Now that you are familiar with the best online title page makers, both free and paid, let’s talk about creating a cover page manually.
If you are assigned to write a paper in APA, you definitely need a title page. Actually, APA has two cover page versions: student and professional. As a rule, students use the student version of the APA cover page; however, sometimes, a professor may ask you to use the professional version.
Below, we will explain the requirements and key differences of each version.
Paper Title
Both professional and student title pages in APA include the paper title, author names, and author affiliation. Here are some basic rules for placing the title:
- Drop three to four lines from the top of the page.
- Center the title, and type it in bold font. Don’t forget to capitalize key words of the title.
- Place the paper’s title and subtitle on separate lines.
Although there is no maximum length, you should keep it as short as possible and don’t forget to include key terms.
Author Names and Author Affiliation
The next details to include are the author name and affiliation. There are a few rules you need to follow.
Let’s start with author name!
Add a double-spaced line after the paper title and start typing your name. In case there are two authors, you should use the conjunction “and” between names. If there are three or more authors, you need a comma between their names and the conjunction “and” before the last name. These rules are the same for both professional and student versions of title pages.
The author affiliation rules vary depending on the version you use. In the student version of an APA title page, you need to include the name of the department and the college or university, separated by a comma. Place the author affiliation right after the name and don't forget to center it.
If you need to create the professional version of an APA title page and the authors have different affiliations, you need to use superscript numerals after their names to connect names with the appropriate affiliations. This rule is not applied if authors share the same affiliation.
Student Title Page Details
Now, let’s discuss the title page details for student papers. There are some mandatory details you need to place on the cover:
- Course number and name. You should place these on the next line after the author affiliation. Don’t forget to center them.
- Instructor’s name. The instructor’s name comes next. Center it on the next double-spaced line after the course name.
- Assignment due date. You need to include the assignment due date on the next line after the instructor’s name using the right date format. The assignment due date must be centered similar to other elements.
- Page number. All pages in a paper formatted to the APA style should be numbered, starting with the title page. The page number must be placed in the top right corner of the page header.
- Running head. Most student papers don’t include this detail. However, your instructor may request you include it. If so, keep reading! We will explain how to include a running head in the next section of this article.
Professional Title Page in APA
The professional title page includes the page number, author note, and running head. Check the APA requirements for these elements:
- Running head. The running head appears in the page headers of all pages of you paper along with the page number. You should capitalize all letters and align it to the left margin. Avoid using the label “Running head.”
- Page number. The rules regarding page numbers are the same for both student and professional versions of the cover page in APA. The page number must be placed in the top right corner of the page starting from “1” on the title page.
- Author note. The last mandatory detail on the professional title page should be placed in the bottom half of the page and must include the centered bold label “Author note”. The paragraphs of the author note must be aligned to the left.
The MLA title page has the same requirements for both student and professional papers. To make a perfect cover page in MLA, you need to know a few details: the assignment title, the title of the course, professor’s name, and the assignment due date.
Here are the basic rules for MLA title page formatting:
- Font and spacing. According to the MLA handbook, you should use easily readable typeface. The most common font used is Times New Roman, 11 or 12 points. The paper should be double-spaced. Don’t use bigger or bold fonts for the title.
- Margins. The next requirement you should meet is 1-inch margins on all sides of the paper.
- Headers. In the top right corner, you need to place your last name and the page number, separated by a space. These details should be placed on all pages of the paper. In the top left corner, you should place the author name, professor name, course name, and the assignment due date. All these points should be placed on separate lines.
- Title. The paper title must be centered on the next line after headers. Use standard capitalization.
- Text. The title page in MLA doesn’t require separate pages for the cover and the body of the paper. The text of your essay goes right after the title.
- Distance. The title and headers should take one-third of the page. Divide the page into three parts and place the title at the top.
- Capitalization. In MLA titles, you need to capitalize all words, except articles, the infinitive particle “to”, prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions. Note, that subordinating conjunctions (after, although, because, etc.) must be capitalized. Always capitalize the first word of the title, even if it is an article.
- Punctuation. MLA title page doesn’t require any punctuation or quotation marks, except if the title constitutes a quotation.
- Underlining and italicizing. Don’t use underlining or italicizing in the title of your paper. Just leave it simple.
As you can see, the MLA formatting style is quite simple. Now, let’s take a closer look at the title page in Chicago Style!
The Chicago Manual of Style doesn’t address formatting the cover pages for academic assignments. This means that you should check the professor’s instructions first. If no instructions are given, you may center the title on the first page of the text.
If you still need a cover page, you may refer to the Turabian style guide. This version of CMoS was designed for writing theses, research papers, and dissertations. Here are some details of the Chicago/Turabian cover page you should include:
- Title and subtitle. Place these elements one-third down from the top of the page. If you use subtitles, end the title line with a colon and place the subtitle on the next line.
- Author name, assignment due date, course information. These details should be placed two-thirds down from the top of the page.
- Spacing. All elements on the title page should be centered and double-spaced.
- Font. Use a readable font, for example Times New Roman or Courier, no less than 10 points.
- Page number and running head. Don’t include these elements on a Chicago style cover page.
- Capitalization. In Chicago style, you should capitalize all the important words.
Check out the Chicago title page example below:
Now, you have all the necessary tools to create the perfect title page. Don’t forget to share this article with your friends and classmates!

In case you are wondering how to create a title page on your own, you will need MS Word or its equivalent. Below, see what elements to include on a title page and in what order. Note that the following guidelines are for the APA style – the most common writing format.
- Title of the paper. Write a full title of your paper and center it in the upper part of the page.
- Author’s name. Write the author’s name under the title.
- Author’s affiliation. If you’re writing a paper for a class, then all you need to mention is the university’s name.
- Page header. You will need to include a shortened version (no more than 50 symbols) of your title at the top of the page. It usually looks like this: Running Head: TITLE OF THE PAPER. Be sure not to capitalize “Running Head.”
- Author’s Note. You only include the author’s note on printed articles. It contains information about financial support and acknowledgments.

✒️ MLA vs. APA: Stylistic Differences
MLA and APA are the most common styles for academic papers. The majority of professors, educational institutions, and various conferences require them. But you may not be sure why we share these styles for title pages everywhere.
Therefore, in the following sections, we will explain why, or rather indicate, their main differences.
👩🏫 Formatting Rules
Formatting rules are a set of standardized guidelines used to create academic papers. They determine the font size and style variations, the spacing, making a reference list, and organizing in-text citations. This section will explain in more detail the similarities and differences between APA and MLA style.
Similarities
The general formatting rules for both academic styles do not differ significantly. Both require double-spacing, Times New Roman font, size 12, and 1-inch margins.
Differences
The key differences between the APA and MLA writing formats are apparent in:
- Title page format.
- Running head.
- In-text citations.
According to the APA guidelines, each paper should have a separate title page. In contrast, for an essay written in MLA format, a cover page is not an essential element. Instead of making a separate page, the latter requires just a heading on top of the first page. Yet, an MLA style title page can be required.
The headers are also different for these styles. In APA format, it consists of only a page number. If you are applying an MLA style, include it along with your last name. Also, note that only professional papers have a running head unless instructed otherwise.
The differences also include supporting documents. They are generally not required, but if your instructor says otherwise, you need to have them:
- For APA style: author’s note, appendix, abstract, and footnotes.
- For MLA style: an annotated bibliography and footnotes.
🔖 In-Text Citations
An in-text citation is a reference in the essay that alerts the reader about the information you used in your writing. As it was mentioned, APA and MLA styles differ in this formatting aspect as well.
Both styles require an in-text citation, which includes the author’s last name and the page number. In MLA style, the page number should be present, while APA requires it only when you quote or paraphrase a specific piece of information. If there are multiple authors, then both styles use the abbreviation “et al.”
When citing a source in MLA referencing style, you need to include the author’s last name and the page number. In APA style, indicate the author’s surname and publication year. If there are two authors, MLA uses “and,” while APA uses “&.”
📋 Works Cited vs. References
A reference section is a list of sources used in your paper. It is intended to provide all the necessary information to help the reader find the source. Here, we will discuss the main similarities and differences of the reference list in both academic styles.
These formatting styles include a separate page for sources used. The citation pages’ titles in both of them are centered at the top, and the text is double-spaced.
To cite work in MLA, you need to write the author’s last name, first name, title in italics, and publishing date. To cite work in APA, you need a last name, initial, date of publishing in brackets, title, and publisher.
The key distinctive feature is the name of the citation page:
- In MLA style, title the section as “Works Cited” (or “Work Cited” if there is only one source).
- In APA style, write “References” (or “Reference” in case there is only one source) to name your reference list.
Thank you for reading this article until the end. Consider using the title page generator and send it to those who might need it!

Importance of a Good Essay Title
The journey of writing an essay is punctuated with various crucial steps, but perhaps none is as underestimated yet vital as crafting the perfect title. A title is more than just a heading; it’s the first impression, a decisive moment where readers decide whether to continue reading or move on. The significance of a good essay title cannot be overstressed, as it plays a pivotal role in the success and reception of your essay.
First Impressions Count
A title is the initial point of contact between your essay and its potential reader. Just as one dresses appropriately for an interview to make a good first impression, an essay must have a title that immediately captures attention. A compelling title acts like a window, offering a glimpse into the soul of your essay. It sets the tone and expectation, priming the reader for what lies ahead. A mundane or uninspiring title might lead to your essay being overlooked, regardless of the quality of its content.
Engagement and Curiosity
Engagement begins with curiosity, and a well-crafted title is a tool to pique the interest of the reader. It acts as a hook, intriguing the audience and sparking their curiosity. A title like “The Unseen Consequences of Climate Change” invites the reader to explore a possibly unconsidered aspect of a well-known issue. The title should entice the reader, promising them new insights and perspectives.
Reflecting the Content
A good title is a summary of your essay in a nutshell. It should be a distillation of the essence of your work. This doesn’t mean it has to be plain or direct; rather, it should encapsulate the central theme or argument in an engaging way. Titles that mislead or don’t align with the content can disappoint or confuse readers, detracting from the trustworthiness and credibility of the essay.
Keywords and Discoverability
In the digital age, where many essays are accessed online, titles play a crucial role in discoverability. Titles that incorporate relevant keywords improve the essay’s visibility on search engines and academic databases. This aspect is particularly important for students and researchers who want their work to be easily found and accessed.
Memorability
An effective title is memorable. It sticks in the reader’s mind, prompting them to think about the essay long after they’ve read it. Memorable titles often use literary devices such as alliteration, metaphors, or puns. For example, “Fahrenheit 451: The Temperature at Which Books Burn” by Ray Bradbury is not only descriptive but also intriguing and memorable.
Connection with Success
There is a direct correlation between a good title and the success of an essay. Academic essays with striking titles tend to be cited more often, as they catch the attention of other scholars and researchers. In more informal settings, a compelling title can be the difference between an essay that is widely read and shared and one that languishes in obscurity.
Tips for Essay Writing
Writing an essay can be a challenging yet rewarding process. Whether you are a student, a budding writer, or someone who needs to craft an essay for professional purposes, understanding the nuances of essay writing is essential. This comprehensive guide offers valuable tips, discusses different types of essays, and provides insights into structuring your essay effectively.

- Persuasive Essays: The goal here is to convince the reader to accept the writer’s point of view or recommendation. Title Suggestion: “The Case for [Your Argument]”
- Argumentative Essays: Similar to persuasive essays but with a more balanced view, presenting both sides of an argument. Title Suggestion: “Navigating the Debate: [Your Topic]”
- Compare and Contrast Essays: These essays examine the similarities and differences between two subjects. Title Suggestion: “Contrasting Worlds: [Subject 1] vs. [Subject 2]”
Essay Writing Tips
- Start with Research: Before you begin writing, thoroughly research your topic. Gather all the necessary information and data to ensure your essay is well-informed and factually accurate.
- Create an Outline: An outline helps organize your thoughts and structure your essay logically. It serves as a roadmap, guiding you through the writing process.
- Craft a Strong Thesis Statement: Your thesis statement should clearly state your essay’s main idea or argument. It sets the direction and tone of your essay.
- Engaging Introduction: Your introduction should capture the reader’s attention and provide a preview of what the essay will cover.
- Body Paragraphs with Clear Arguments: Each paragraph should focus on a single idea or argument, supporting your thesis statement. Use evidence, examples, and explanations to substantiate your points.
- Use Transition Words: Transition words help the flow of your essay, guiding readers smoothly from one idea to the next.
- Conclude Effectively: Your conclusion should summarize the main points and restate the thesis in light of the evidence presented. It’s your final opportunity to leave a lasting impression.
- Revise and Edit: Review your essay for any grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. Ensure that your essay flows logically and that your arguments are well-presented.
- Avoid Plagiarism: Always credit your sources properly. Use citations and references to acknowledge the work of others.
- Seek Feedback: If possible, have someone else read your essay and provide feedback. Fresh eyes can catch errors and provide a new perspective.
Structuring Your Essay
- Introduction: Set the stage for your essay. Begin with a hook, provide background information, and end with your thesis statement.
- Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that relates to your thesis. Follow this with supporting sentences and concrete evidence.
How to Brainstorm Essay Titles
Brainstorming an essay title is a crucial step in the essay writing process. A title acts as the gateway to your content, setting the tone and expectation for the reader. Here are techniques and insights into how creativity, research, and the strategic use of keywords can lead to the creation of compelling essay titles.
Techniques for Brainstorming Essay Titles
- Mind Mapping: Start by jotting down words or phrases related to your essay topic. This can include main themes, arguments, or any words that resonate with your subject. Mind maps help in visually organizing your thoughts and finding connections between ideas.
- Use Writing Prompts: Writing prompts can stimulate creative thinking. For instance, if your essay is about climate change, prompts like “What if we fail to act?” or “The future of renewable energy” can lead to intriguing title ideas.
- Play with Words: Experiment with alliterations, metaphors, and puns to make your title catchy and memorable. For example, a title like “Solar Saviors: Harnessing the Sun’s Power” uses alliteration effectively.
- Ask Questions: Titles framed as questions can be very effective in engaging readers. They provoke thought and curiosity. For instance, “Is Artificial Intelligence the End of Human Creativity?” immediately piques interest.
The Role of Creativity and Research
- Creativity in Titling: Creativity in titles involves thinking outside the box and experimenting with language. It’s about crafting a title that not only summarizes your essay but also captures the reader’s imagination.
- Research for Relevance: Research ensures that your title is relevant and accurate. Look at existing literature on your topic, especially the titles of academic papers, books, and articles. Notice patterns, commonly used terms, and how titles are structured in your field.
Integrating Keywords Effectively in Titles
- SEO-Friendly Titles: In the digital age, where many essays are accessed online, using keywords effectively in your title can boost the visibility of your work. Identify keywords that are most relevant to your topic and integrate them into your title in a way that feels natural.
- Balancing Keywords with Creativity: While keywords help in SEO, it’s important not to sacrifice creativity. Your title should be a blend of SEO-friendly terms and creative expression. For example, “Green Revolution: The Future of Sustainable Energy” combines keywords with a creative element.
- Keyword Positioning: Place important keywords toward the beginning of your title if possible. Titles are often truncated in search engine results, so placing keywords at the start ensures they are visible.
Example Scenarios
- For an Argumentative Essay on Social Media: Start with keywords like ‘social media,’ ‘impact,’ ‘society.’ Brainstorm around these words to come up with titles like “Social Media: Society’s New Catalyst or Culprit?”
- For a Descriptive Essay on a Personal Experience: Creativity takes the front seat. If your essay is about overcoming a challenge, a title like “Beyond the Abyss: My Journey of Resilience” can be compelling.
- For an Expository Essay on Technology: Incorporate both technical terms and a layman-friendly approach. A title such as “The Digital Dawn: Explaining Blockchain Technology” strikes a balance between being informative and accessible.

Then our experts compared MLA & APA7 format cover pages in a viewer-friendly table. See for yourself and return to the tool if you decide to get your front page in an instant!
How Does It Work?
Chicago style, harvard style.
- MLA vs. APA Cover
If you’re wondering why you should trust the mechanism, the answer is simple: it is automatic. No human factor can interfere with your front page’s excellence. Our cover page maker cannot omit a mistake, as it relies on different formatting rules and follows them to the dot.
That’s how it works:
- The tool lets you pick a style. Each paper should be done according to one of the style guides required by the institution, tutor, conference, etc. Our generator was programmed to contain information about a variety of most common formatting rules. It places the data where it’s supposed to locate according to the academic style. You won’t have to worry about it yourself.
- The tool hints you what to write. In case you don’t have your title, running head, and so on figured out already, the cover page maker will guide you. You don’t have to wonder what to type as it provides you with blank spaces to fill in.
- The tool corrects your mistakes. You may have formulated your research paper title too long or forgot about capitalization. The generator will indicate how many words or symbols should be in each field. And of course, it will make the letters capital when it’s needed.
- The tool saves time. The most apparent advantage of the automatic generator is its speed. In mere seconds, the cover page maker will distribute the information and add stylistic features, according to the built-in templates.
Now when you need your Harvard, APA7, or MLA format cover page created, you’ll understand how the mechanism works.
Cover Page Styles: What You Need to Know
Cover pages, also known as title pages, present academic works to the viewer, listing the essential information. Their purpose is always the same, yet the format and sometimes even content differ slightly.
In the following sections, we’ll elaborate on everything you need to know about the formatting styles so that you won’t get confused. Then it’ll be much less complicated to understand how to make a cover page in APA7, MLA, or any other format.
American Psychological Association (APA for short) is an organization that created parameters for preparing academic works to be published. It was soon expanded, becoming a collection of rules. Today, numerous institutions follow the APA style guidelines in its 7th edition. Naturally, it is widely used in papers on social sciences, psychology, and education.
The basic things you should learn about the APA7 format:
- Front page. According to the manual, every academic writing piece has to include a cover page in APA format. The running head is not required though your professor may ask for one. The title should appear in the center of the upper half, in bold. The page has to contain the writer’s name, institutional affiliations, number, and the course. It should end with the paper’s due date.
- Abstract. Following a cover page, a summary of the work usually appears, though not in APA7. The style doesn’t require it, but your professor may ask for one nonetheless. Then, you should state your thesis , list your goals, methods, and results here.
- Body. Depending on the paper’s length and status, its central part can be divided into sections with headings or not. The work’s title should be centered on the page, between the page number and the introduction. Some tutors also ask for an outline to be written before the body.
- References. It’s the concluding part of most papers done in APA7 style that don’t include an appendix. Here, the author must reference the sources they cited in the text in alphabetic order.
The formatting can be difficult to grasp from the first reading, but it becomes apparent when you look at examples . To create a cover page, you can use our generator without checking the guide.
MLA style, created by the Modern Language Association, was initially used in academic works in literature and languages. With time, it became a format for a variety of papers in different fields. All the information about it can be found in the MLA Handbook (sometimes known as Manual), in its eighth edition.
You should know the following about the style:
- Front Page. The format doesn’t require a cover page, letting the writers confine themselves with a heading. There you have to list your and your instructor’s names, the course, the current date, and your title. Yet your tutor can ask you to provide a cover page, which is usually the case when there are multiple authors.
- Abstract. Similar to the MLA format cover page, the style doesn’t make the summary necessary. When you’re required to write one, you should briefly list your objectives, methods, findings, and conclusions. Make in within 150-250 word limit.
- Body. Your text should be double-spaced, in Times New Roman, 12pts font. You should include in-text citations if you want your paper to be credible. There can be headings and subheadings, but the style manual doesn’t require them. In case your tutor or institution does, write them in the title case.
- Works Cited. In the section, the author lists books and articles they cited in the body. If you have any endnotes, present them before the Works Cited part.
To see for yourself how it works, consider an example of the text in MLA format.
The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) is a handbook that presents formatting rules for various writers, from researchers to copywriters. Turabian is its version, which is mostly applied to the student papers, yet it has many similarities with the general Chicago style.
There are two types of documentation that you should be aware of:
- The notes & bibliography system, mostly used in literature, arts, and history. It differs from the other one by the presentation of in-text citations in footnotes. Cited sources are usually gathered in the bibliography as well. The system allows the author to use various sources, even the unusual ones.
- The author-date system, preferred in social, natural, and physical sciences. It’s concise and straightforward, with the sources being cited in parenthetical citations in the text. The references list appears at the end of the document.
Among the essential features of the style, we listed those that are common for both these types:
- Front Page. The front page with the necessary information about the author and the work isn’t required. Generally, writers add it at the top, before the title and introduction. Similar to the MLA style, your instructor can request you to provide one.
- Abstract. Including a brief summary (150-250 words) before an introduction is allowed upon request from your tutor or institution. Start with a statement of your arguments and list all the objectives, methods, and results that you have. Don’t forget to add your conclusions.
- Body. You’re allowed to use a few levels of headings in your paper, but you have to make them distinctive via the use of bold and italic fonts. In the body, use words for numbers lower than 100, not digits. The double-spaced text in Times New Roman, 12pts font is a given but negotiable.
- Reference page. Though the naming of the section differs between the systems, it serves the same purpose: it displays the sources cited in the text. It should be included at the end of the academic paper and list reference entries in alphabetical order. “Bibliography” in the notes and bibliography system and “References” in the author-date system vary in their features and presentation.
The Harvard style of referencing is another example of the author-date system. Created in the university of the same name in the 1880s, it hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s widely used by college students in their academic works.
The fundamental information about the Harvard style is as follows:
- Front page. The most noticeable part of the cover is the title, which is centered in the middle of the page and typed in capital letters. The author’s name is placed directly under it, three lines down. Then the course, the professor’s name, the affiliation should appear, as well the location and the due date.
- Abstract. Such papers as theses and dissertations should include a summary before the introduction. The abstract should be no more than 400 words, displayed on a separate page. The author should elaborate on the problem, methods, and procedures. The key results should also be included. Besides, the page should be titled “Abstract” and have the author’s name (right corner), the advisor’s name (left corner), and the number.
- Body. A few fonts are accepted according to the style manual, though Times New Roman and Arial are preferred. The one chosen by the author should remain the same everywhere, from headings to footnotes. The body should be double spaced, with at least 1 inch for all the margins.
- Reference list. Each source cited in the body of work should be included at the end of the paper. The entries should appear in alphabetic order and correspond to the in-text references. The author should place the list on a separate page.
MLA vs. APA Format Cover Page
Now that you’ve learned what each formatting style requires and looks like, let’s compare the covers of the two most popular ones. As we’ve mentioned before, not every MLA work needs a front page. Yet if your instructor asks for one, or when multiple authors worked on the paper, you have to make one, according to the rules. In the table, we’ll compare the APA7 and standard MLA heading.
For starters, both MLA and APA7 student cover pages have to be double spaced, in 12pst Times New Roman. They have to include the papers’ essential information, such as the author’s and tutor’s names, the course, and the title.
Yet, there are some significant differences:
MLA Format Cover Page (Heading) | APA7 Format Cover Page |
---|---|
A page number appears with the author’s last name in the upper-right corner, 1 inch down. | A page number should be right-aligned, 0.5 inches down. |
An affiliated institution should not be listed. | An affiliated institution should locate between the author’s name and the course. |
The title is in the center of the page, not highlighted in bold print. Each notional word starts with a capital letter. | The title is about 3-4 hits of “Enter” from the top of the page. It should be centered, in bold, and in the title sentence case. |
The author’s name, the professor’s name, the course, and the due date should be left-aligned before the title. | The author’s name, the affiliation, the course, the professor’s name, and the due date are located just under the title or subtitle in the center of the page. |

Step 2: Click Generate Title
In a few seconds, you’ll receive three titles tailored to your content and ready to grab your audience’s attention. Choose the title that captures your vision the most.
How to choose a good title (7 principles with examples)
The title is the first impression that can invite readers in or leave them disinterested. A compelling title doesn’t just inform; it entices.
While there’s no definitive rulebook for crafting the perfect title, certain guidelines can steer you toward a title that resonates with your audience.
Here’s a roadmap to help you navigate the art of headline creation:
- Use numbers : “5 Ways to Improve Your Diet” or “10 Books Everyone Should Read.” Numbers offer a clear and tangible benefit, making the content seem organized and digestible.
- Use words that imply urgency : If your content offers a solution, let readers know they can reap the benefits sooner rather than later. Example: “Get Clear Skin in Just 7 Days!”
- Make the benefit obvious : Be clear about what readers will gain from your content. If it’s a landing page for a product, articulate the specific challenge it solves. “Learn How to Boost Your Sales by 50%.”
- Keep it short and sweet : While longer headlines can be effective, lead with the most crucial information. Ensure the headline communicates your main point in a few words without losing its essence.
- Use attention-grabbing words : Words like “discover,” “free,” “proven,” and “guarantee” can enhance the allure of your title, making it more clickable.
- Keep it meaningful : Your title should convey value. “Save $1,000 on Your Next Vacation With These Simple Tricks.”
- Be ultra-specific : Instead of “Ways to Save Money,” try “7 Proven Strategies to Cut Your Monthly Bills in Half.”
How do you create a unique title?
Creating a unique title requires a blend of understanding your content’s core message, knowing your target audience’s preferences, and incorporating fresh perspectives or angles.
Start by pinpointing the most compelling or distinctive aspect of your content. Then, experiment with different phrasing, considering both the emotional and informational appeal. Utilizing attention-grabbing words, numbers, or questions can further enhance uniqueness. Lastly, avoid generic or overused phrases and always ensure the title accurately reflects the content it represents.

MLA Title Page | When You Need One & How to Format It
Published on July 12, 2021 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on March 5, 2024.
In MLA style , a title page is usually not required for your paper. Instead, MLA recommends including a header on your first page listing your name, your instructor’s name, the course name and number, and the submission date, followed by the title of your paper.
However, you should include a separate title page instead in these cases:
- Your instructor requires it
- The paper is a group project (i.e. you need to list multiple authors)
The formats for a separate title page and a first-page header are shown below. You can also use our templates in Word or Google Docs.

To create an MLA format title page, list the following on separate lines, left-aligned at the top of the page:
- Your co-authors’ names, each on its own line, if it’s a group project
- Your instructor’s name
- The course name and number
- The submission date
Then leave a few blank lines and list the title of the paper, centered and in title case, halfway down the page. All text should be double-spaced and in the same font as the rest of the paper.

Most MLA papers will instead list this information in a header , which appears on the same page as your opening paragraphs instead of on a separate page before them. In the header, left-aligned, list
Then on the next line, write the title of your paper, centered and in title case. On the line after that, start your first paragraph. The header and title should be double-spaced, like the rest of the paper.
Usually, no title page is needed in an MLA paper . A header is generally included at the top of the first page instead. The exceptions are when:
- Your instructor requires one, or
- Your paper is a group project
In those cases, you should use a title page instead of a header, listing the same information but on a separate page.
If you’re working on a group project and therefore need to list multiple authors for your paper , MLA recommends against including a normal header . Instead, create a separate title page .
On the title page, list each author on a separate line, followed by the other usual information from the header: Instructor, course name and number, and submission date. Then write the title halfway down the page, centered, and start the text of the paper itself on the next page.
MLA recommends using 12-point Times New Roman , since it’s easy to read and installed on every computer. Other standard fonts such as Arial or Georgia are also acceptable. If in doubt, check with your supervisor which font you should be using.
MLA Style is the second most used citation style (after APA ). It is mainly used by students and researchers in humanities fields such as literature, languages, and philosophy.

🔎 Title Page Generator: Where to Use It
Does your paper require a title page or not? Generally, it is a vital element of a thesis and dissertation. Some essays or research papers may need a title page, but some might not. Anyways, if you are doubting, better double-check. You can ask your professor or look at the instructions on the university website.
Yet, there are some cases when the title page is always required. Let’s take a look at them.
All the papers written in APA 7th edition require a title page. There are two versions of the title page: student and professional. While at university, you are supposed to use the student version unless your professor asks you to apply a professional format.
An MLA-formatted paper does not need a title page (unless your professor requires it). But if it is a group project, you should include one. List the name of all the writers on the MLA title page of your paper.
Chicago Style:
Scientific or social papers in this style always require a title page. According to The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), a Chicago title page should be created using the font Times New Roman, size 12.
Note: Turabian style = a simplified version of Chicago style.
Harvard Style:
If you are using this writing format, your essay should contain a title page. Include all the information the reader needs to know about you (the author) and your topic.
All the papers written in this style require a title page. A distinctive feature of the ASA title page is that it might include an abstract. The author can choose to write it on the first page, under the title.
🗝️ Generating a Title Page: the Key Components
Every title page is supposed to contain specific information about the author and the work itself. The formatting depends on the required writing style. But you don’t need to worry about that! Our online generator will format your title page for you.
Wondering how to do a title page and what data to include? Check out the following section to figure that out.
So, every title page, regardless of the writing style, should include:
- The title of your paper.
- The author’s name.
- The author’s educational institution (school, college, or university name).
- The running head (a shortened title of the paper – up to 50 characters).
Besides, some additional elements might be required:
- The due date of the paper (or the date of creation).
- Author’s notes.
- Your professor’s name.
- The course name.
- The page number.
Alternatively, you can write a header instead of creating a separate title page. This practice is prevalent for the MLA writing style.
What should a page header contain?
- Author’s name (Jonatan Wheels).
- Professor’s name (Professor Cox).
- Course code and name (LIT 114 Introduction to Literature).
- Due date (14 November 2020).
💫 Creative Titles for Your Paper
No wonder the most significant element of the title page is the title itself. There are a lot of aspects to be taken into consideration while naming your paper:

- The word count of the caption.
- The location of the title on the title page.
Yet, the most critical aspect is your creativity. Here is where even our title page generator won’t help you since you must name your paper yourself.

Define and include the keywords.
A dynamic title’s success relies on the properly chosen keywords. They highlight the paper’s core idea and help the readers focus on the information you are delivering.

Creating an MLA title page
If you are writing a research paper in MLA style 9th edition for a class, then you may need to include an MLA format title page. An MLA title page is the cover of your paper, and they aren’t always required. So, how do you make a title page that adheres to the MLA formatting guidelines, and how do you know when you need one?
This page contains all the information you need to know to make the perfect MLA title page, so that you can prove that you are an expert researcher and get the best possible grade. This MLA sample paper will show you how the rest of your paper should be formatted.
Here’s a run-through of everything this page includes:
Title page vs. MLA heading on first page
Title page / cover page, first page: mla heading (no title page), troubleshooting.
The current edition of the Modern Language Association (MLA) handbook does not require a title page , but your teacher, professor, or other reader may require one. In this case, you will need to know the differences between a title page and an MLA heading, and which one to use depending on your reader’s preferences. Other citation styles look slightly different, like this APA title page .
A title page, or a cover page, is a single page that comes before your MLA abstract (if required) and the content of your paper. It introduces your paper and quickly shows a reader the following information about your paper:
- author name (your name, since you wrote the paper)
- course information (if applicable)
It does not include any of the research paper itself.
First page with MLA heading
MLA format recommends adding an MLA heading to the first page of your paper. This contains the same information as a title page, but the information is formatted differently and is on the same page on which your actual research paper begins.
Unless otherwise specified by your instructor or teacher, this should be how you format your first page.
Before you start typing your MLA research paper title page, you will need to gather some information.
What you will need
If you are creating an MLA heading on the first page of your essay instead of a title page, you will need most of the same information, but you will format it differently.
To create a title page, you need to include:
- The name of your high school, college, or university (if applicable)
- The title of your paper
- The subtitle of your paper (if you have one)
- Your first and last name
- Your teacher or professor’s name (if applicable)
- The class name or course number (if applicable)
- The date the paper is due (in “day month year” format)
Formatting guidelines
Follow these formatting guidelines when typing your MLA title page:
- Double-spaced
- Times New Roman font
- Size 12 font
- The first letter of each word should be capitalized, with the exception of very short words such as the, and, of, or, a, an, for, in , etc. However, the first word should always be capitalized.
- Do not include a page number heading on your title page
Step-by-step instructions
Here are the steps you need to take to create the perfect MLA title page:
- At the top of the page, type the name of your high school, college, or university (if applicable).
- Skip down approximately one-third of the page and type the title of your research paper using title case.
- If you have a subtitle, type it on the line following the paper title.
- Skip down to the bottom third of the page and type your first and last name.
- On the following line, type the course name and number (if applicable).
- On the following line, type your instructor’s name (if applicable).
- On the following and final line, type the due date of your paper in “day month year” format.
Although it’s important to know how to create an MLA essay title page in case your instructor requires it, in most cases you will use an MLA heading on the first page of your paper instead.
Remember, you should only create a title page if your instructor requests it .
Otherwise, use these guidelines to create an MLA heading. If you create a title page, then you usually won’t need an MLA heading on your first page, but you should ask your instructor for their specific requirements.
To create an MLA heading on your first page, you will need to include some of the same information you would use for a title page, including:
- Left-justified text for MLA header
- Centered text for title
- Right-justified text for page number header
- In the top left corner of the first page of your essay, type your first and last name.
- On the following line, type the due date of your paper in “day month year” format.
- On the following line, switch from left-justified text to centered text and type the title (and the subtitle on the same line, if you have one) of your paper in title case. Do not italicize, underline, or place your essay title in quotation marks. Do not use quotation marks unless you are referring to other works in your title and need to enclose the referenced works in quotation marks.
- Your research paper should begin on the following double-spaced line.
- Create a right-justified text header one-half inch from the top of your paper that includes your last name and the page number.
- All pages of your paper should be numbered with your last name and the numerical page number. The page including your MLA header, title, and the beginning of your essay is page one (1).
- Your instructor may specify not to include a last name and page number header on your first page. Always follow your instructor’s guidelines.
Solution #1: What should I do if my paper is a group project?
If you have written a collaborative paper with multiple authors, list each author on your MLA title page or in your MLA heading in alphabetical order, with line breaks between each.
If your paper has multiple authors, omit the name from your page numbers in the upper-right corner of your MLA-format paper.
Example MLA heading for a group paper:
Example MLA title page for a group paper:
Solution #2: What should I do if my paper isn’t for a specific class?
If your paper is a thesis project for your degree, for example, or not for a specific class, you can omit that information from your MLA title page or MLA header.
Solution #3: Does my paper need a subtitle if I use a full MLA title page?
While an MLA title page allows for a subtitle beneath the title of your paper, it is NOT required to have a subtitle or make one up for your MLA title page.
If you didn’t intend to have a subtitle for your paper, there is no need to add a subtitle. Just leave that area of your MLA title page blank.
Solution #4: Will my MLA title page be part of my final page count?
A title page is not typically included in a paper’s final word count. Check with the teacher or professor assigning the paper to be sure, but it is highly unlikely a title page will count as a full page of your final paper.

The title page in MLA style gives basic information such as the name, the instructor’s name, the course name and number, the title of the paper, and the submission date. MLA style does not recommend using a title page unless specifically requested by your instructor; instead, it suggests creating a header.
The difference between a title page and a header in MLA style is that a title page appears as a page on its own before the main paper copy. A header, on the other hand, appears on the same page where paper copy begins.
Include the following elements on a title page. Follow the order as given below.
The university name
The title and subtitle of the paper
The course name and number
The instructor’s name
The submission/due date
If you are not required to create a title page, and only need a header, the following elements should be included in the header, in the order as listed:
While MLA does not generally recommend the use of a title page, some courses or professors may require it. The title page should include the university name, title of the paper, your name, the instructor’s name, the course name, and the submission or due date.
Formatting title page
MLA style does not have any specific guidelines for formatting a title page. However, you can use the below suggestions to format your title page if you are required to create one for your paper.
Page margins
All margins (top, bottom, left, and right) should be set at 1 inch.
The font should be clear and easy to read. A good option is Times New Roman font in size 12 pt.
Text on the title page should be double-spaced.
Elements of a title page
Include the following elements on the title page. Follow the order as given below.
Add a few blank lines before and after the title of the work. The title should be in title case and centered.
Beginning on the title page, the paper should also include a running head. The running head includes the your last name and the page number. This should be placed in the “header” area of the paper so that it is present on each page. Use the page number feature in your word processor so that the page number is generated automatically.

We have taken this challenge out of your homework completion process by developing a smart, free tool to generate essay titles in a few seconds. Try it out and see for yourself; with our essay title generator, you can sit down to write without hours of pointless searching for interesting topics.
Importance of a Stellar Title
It’s vital not to underscore the title’s importance. In most cases, readers don’t proceed to the text if they don’t like the title or feel confused with it. Therefore, an interesting and informative title must be used by every writer. By scanning your title, the audience should quickly capture the content of your text. Ideally, the readers should also get hooked with some catchy phrase or a promise of an interesting reading experience.
What Is an Essay Title Generator?
Our essay title generator is a smart, automated tool that simplifies the topic selection process. It covers all subjects, themes, and academic areas, thus ensuring complete coverage of all your educational needs. No more sitting in front of your laptop, scanning the news and scholarly databases in search of ideas. Just insert a couple of keywords that your prompt contains and watch your topic formulate in seconds.
Here’s what you need to do to make use of our title generator tool:
- Enter the keywords that characterize your topic in the best way into the corresponding tab.
- Select the category of your assignment. We offer a broad range of selection options, from admission essays to public speeches, but this tab is optional. You may skip it to see how the keywords alone work, refining the search later.
- Click the “Show Titles” tab to see the results.
That’s all required from you, and the tool starts scanning the GradeMiners database of scholarly materials and writer samples to spot the hottest and most relevant topics for you. This way, you receive a great title in seconds, and now it’s up to you whether to take it in the works in the “as is” form or press “Show Titles” again to see other suggestions.
Why Use Our Title Generator?
Technology comes with many advancements meant to simplify students’ lives and speed up their routine tasks. The same goes for the free essay title generator that our coders have programmed to speed up your topic selection phase and make it more suitable for your academic goals. Here are the key benefits the users of our system enjoy.
Simple interface
There’s nothing complicated or confusing about the use of our essay title generator. You only need to enter the keywords you have received from a professor (e.g., causes of diabetes, the death penalty in the USA, COVID-19 and economy, etc.) and press “Show Titles.” You can also customize the search to a specific paper type, such as a persuasive essay or a speech. If you do so, the system will scan the database of orders of this type only, leaving the rest of the materials on this topic aside. So, you’re likely to arrive at a relevant, attention-grabbing, and informative title in a minute.
Free, quick help
The best about this tool is that it comes free of charge. Thus, it becomes a secret weapon of students on a budget who cannot afford premium-level writing assistance or can’t leave the topic selection to the writer. Using our title generator frees more time for writing and editing and makes the topic selection a manageable step instead of a major writing bottleneck.
Huge database
Our free title generator is much more than a Google search engine. It’s a smart system specially meant for topic formulation based on your entered keywords and the academic work type you need to compose. So, you can receive interesting and researchable essay titles without extra search filters or long scanning of Web pages.
Tips for Proper Use of Our Title Generator
As with any other technology, our essay title generator works according to a set of predetermined criteria to help students receive workable essay topics. Therefore, if you understand its operation principles, you’re sure to maximize the value of this free tool in your academics. Here are the tips we give to all interested users.
Choose the category wisely
The title generator system currently offers 30+ work types that a student can choose from. So, if you find your academic assignment type in the drop-down menu, make sure to click on it and narrow the focus of the algorithm’s search. For instance, if you want to compose a persuasive essay, the algorithm will look for persuasive topics instead of offering narrative or expository essay titles that will only meet your needs.
Edit the topic further
You don’t need to take the suggested topic as it is; a much better option is to perceive the suggestion as the first stepping stone in the title’s generation. Don’t forget that the algorithm scans the publicly available sources for information, so you may face plagiarism issues if you simply copy and paste the offered title to your paper.
Re-run the search if necessary
Don’t stop on the variants you receive in the first or second round of the title generator’s use. The system works in a way that minimizes your cognitive workload, so the algorithm offers only up to 30 titles in one go, while there could be many other options to consider. So, you can re-run the title generation process as often as you need, arriving at the final title variant that you’ll eventually like.
What title limit does the essay title generator develop at once?
It depends on your request. If you are not content with the results of your first search, continue generating until you find the best match.
How many subject categories does the system cover?
Our title generator can cover all common subjects. So be sure you’ll enjoy the platform opportunities fully and achieve great accomplishments in your field.
Can I generate an essay with my essay title?
Of course! You can generate any paperwork with a central idea , as our service allows you to craft impeccable content from scratch.
How does the tool provide original papers by using internet links?
Due to the system’s capacity to research the relevant websites and make proper adjustments, students acquire error-free papers with 100% originality. As you can see, our title maker for essays is a solid option for uniqueness verification.
