► Feisty 503bhp Range Rover tested ► In opulent and tech-laden Autobiography spec ► A cool £100,350 before options

Autobiography is Land Rover shorthand for comfy and well-appointed. And while there’s truth in the ‘drawing room on wheels’ cliché, Range Rover luxury runs deeper than a bit of lacquered timber. Really it’s about a wonderful sense of serene detachment.

Seen Fury , the Gladiator -in-tanks Brad Pitt vehicle that respected historical accuracy in the same way that Sebastian Vettel observes team orders? A repeated motif was the clanging down of the Sherman’s hatch; cue adrenalin, ricocheting shells and tracked cavalry charges across rain-lashed French fields. The Range Rover equivalent – climbing into the leather-bound commander’s throne and pulling the tall, weighty door to – signals quite the opposite: the immediate dislocation of the outside world and all its noise, stress and tumult.

Range Rover Autobiography on test

Long one of the Range Rover’s defining virtues, this gladdening automotive isolationism is ramped up to 11 in lavish Autobiography spec, and with the muscular yet muted 5.0-litre supercharged petrol V8 in the engine bay. The top of Range Rover’s specification tree, Autobiography brings still-more adjustment to the beautifully upholstered seats (22-way, plus massage), various bits of Autobiography-specific trim (illuminated tread-plates, embossed seats, smart carpets), increased tech in the form of Land Rover’s InControl Apps system, blind-spot monitoring and reverse traffic detection and, on the supercharged V8, a set of spectacular diamond-turned 22in wheels.

The Ranger Rover’s is a remarkable interior, a genuinely mood-lifting place of light (the sliding panoramic glass roof, a no-cost option, is the size of a patio door), space and a luxuriousness born not of deeply carpeted, wood-paneled claustrophobia but of clean, uncluttered minimalism. It’s an ergonomic triumph, the centre-console in particular, which manages to play home to myriad controls, from Terrain Response to air-suspension ride height adjustment, while also retaining an admirably Bauhaus absence of clutter.

Only the low-res and disappointingly clumsy touchscreen interface lets the side down. You’ll get there in the end, whether you’re programming the sat-nav (voice control is an effective alternative to prodding in mangled postcodes) or changing station, but nothing’s quite as intuitive as it should be, nor as one-touch effortless. Volvo’s pretty fabulous new XC90 cockpit , with its iPad-esque interface, shows the Range Rover up here.

A supercharged 5.0-litre V8 – you sure?

It’s the brave choice, admittedly. More popular are the 3.0-litre diesel V6 or the 4.4-litre diesel V8, for obvious reasons; a claimed 40.9mpg and 33.6mpg respectively. But the force-of-nature petrol V8 is virtually flawless bar its thirst. RR claims 22.1mpg on the combined cycle, and when your fuel gauge is showing a third of a tank but your remaining range just 126 miles, you know the car’s six-figure list price is just the beginning, rather than the end, of its fiscal burden.

But you won’t care once aboard and behind the wheel. The V8 roars into life with just the right amount of drama – it’s a sophisticated noise but impressive enough to raise a smile. Twirl into Drive, drop your armrest and move away with a toe-prod. Ease stealthily up to speed or gun for 60mph as quickly as possible (5.4 seconds) to an orchestra of melodic mechanical hard labour.

Find the space and the engine’s turn of speed is deeply impressive, temporarily rendering the RR’s weight and size inconsequential so long as your foot’s mashed into the carpet. With 503bhp, the temptation is there to charge around like a wild rhino, at first at least, but you soon calm down, revel in the engine’s immaculate manners and its broad, satisfyingly meaty delivery (461lb ft from 2500rpm to 5500rpm). Needless to say, smile-widening acceleration is only ever a moment away, regardless of the virtual needle’s position on the digital instruments.

Like piloting a runaway train then?

Far from it. Get clumsy and the Range Rover’s composure will give way to a little heave and roll, but the rest of the time the car’s body control is impressive. And the ride quality is sublime. The steering isn’t the last word in tactility, but it lets you put the car where you want it. Handy, given the size of the thing.

A Range Rover in this spec is capable of generating quite astounding levels of smugness. You look down on the rest of the world. You can effortlessly travel every kind of road, in absolute comfort, be it a manicured, jet-black A-road of pristine tarmac or an unpaved track so rough it’s littered with stranded mountain goats. And should you need to, you can pile on speed like a sports car.

An indulgence then, the V8 supercharged Autobiography, and an unforgivable one in many eyes I’m sure. But for its otherworldly ability to remove all fatigue, stress and jeopardy from modern road travel, there’s little to touch it.

Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography review

The range rover has had a facelift. but has the best four by four by far got better read our review to find out..

range rover autobiography 5.0

"The Range Rover is more car than anyone could ever need"

What is it? The Range Rover is the daddy of the SUV world. Thanks to its blend of stunning on- and off-road ability, style and luxury, there are very few cars that manage to offer so much. And now the best has got even better thanks to new engines and even more technology.

[Click here to watch our video review ]

What’s it like on the outside? The Range Rover is a handsome beast, so it’s not a big surprise to find that design boss Gerry McGovern didn’t fiddle with the Range Rover’s looks too much. At the front, the Rangie gets subtly tweaked headlights, which now have LED driving lights and new three-finger indicators. There’s also a new, more upright three-bar grille and redesigned front bumper, while at the side, a new three-straked side vent is the only change. The rear lights also gain three-finger indicators, and that’s about it.

What’s it like on the inside? Having one of the best interiors in the business to begin with, the Range Rover’s new interior is fantastic. To boost luxury, the materials have been upgraded and the Rangie now gets a “European leather” headlining. Range Rover’s also get a twin-view satnav screen, which means the driver can see the nav while the passenger can watch TV on the same screen. The driver also gets fully virtual dials which slide in and out on a 12-inch TFT screen. It looks great – and you even get a poncey picture of a sunset when you switch off the engine.

What’s it like to drive? The Range Rover has a driving position that all cars aspire to. You sit up high with a fantastic view all round, enabling you to place the car on the road with ease. It’s super-refined and quiet at all speeds too.

The new 5.0-litre supercharged V8 under the bonnet is brilliant, offering up more than enough performance – it takes the same 5.9 seconds to get from 0-62mph as Ford Focus RS . Other stats of note include the fact that the 510hp engine is 29% more powerful than the unit it replaces, but fuel consumption improves by 7.3% to 19mpg, and CO2 reduces to 348g/km, an improvement 7.4%. It’s still not particularly virtuous, but the effortless way it covers ground on road is impressive.

The Range Rover is the best off road car that Land Rover makes, bar the Defender. And there’s something awesome about taking a £75grand car off road, but the Range Rover is rarely troubled. The revised Terrain Response system gets you out of trouble and the new Hill Decent Control deals with the steepest slopes with no bother.

Verdict The 2010 Range Rover is truly a case of the best gets better. It’s even more capable and comfortable on the road, and there’s no other off-roader than comes close to its stunning all-terrain ability. Add in the fact that it has one of the best interiors of any car on sale today, and the top-spec Range Rover really takes some beating.

Road Test: Land Rover Range Rover 5.0 V8 Supercharged Autobiography LWB 4dr Auto SS

range rover autobiography 5.0

SPEC HIGHLIGHTS

What does driving a long-wheelbase Range Rover say about you? It says you’re not the person that matters. That honour belongs to whoever is stretched out enjoying the extra 186mm of legroom this model offers over the standard version.

Of course, it’s the same whenever you see a LWB S-Class, but that shows the circles this Range Rover now moves in. Somewhere I suspect there’s an engineer fretting about the reduction in breakover angle because the axles are now 200mm further apart, but any reduction in off-road ability due to the extra length is bound to be slight – and besides what other production limo offers such go-anywhere usability? And no, the Dartz Prombron does not count.

So here’s what you need to know. It’s available with 335bhp diesel or 503bhp petrol V8s, and later this year as a hybrid. It’ll also be available in four trim levels, Vogue to Autobiography Black, although at the moment Autobiography is the only one featured in the price lists. Your extra 186mm of legroom costs £7,400, boosting the price of the SDV8 from £94,740 to £102,140.

range rover autobiography 5.0

Actually it’ll cost £104,690 because you’ll obviously ditch the bench seating in favour of separate executive seating. Which, ironically, is actually handiest for keeping a pair of brawling kids apart. Plus the extra legroom means they can’t kick the seats in front. I know the 186mm legroom gain doesn’t look life-changing when you hold your fingers that far apart, but the front seats now appear so much more distant and legroom is exceptional – a match for Merc. It’s a lovely environment, not least because unlike the S-Class, you’re raised above things – a powerful sensory tool. There are also blinds on the windows, and if you go for the elec exec seating, they now recline 17 degrees instead of nine.

The 0–62mph time has dropped by a tenth of a second, and there’s a similarly marginal change to the dynamics – a hint of chassis tremor has crept in. You can’t stretch a car this big and heavy without some penalty. Enough to put you off? Of course not, it’s a minor point and this remains a massive, secure, stately motor with a lovely interior, huge presence and utterly unflustered road manners.

Land Rover has reinforced Range Rover’s status as the world’s finest luxury and performance SUV with the introduction of a breath‑taking new model developed by Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) – the Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic.

The SVAutobiography Dynamic is the most powerful production Range Rover. Its potent 550PS 5.0‑litre V8 supercharged engine has been specifically calibrated for the flagship Range Rover and delivers 680Nm of torque, powering the SVAutobiography Dynamic from 0‑60mph in only 5.1 seconds. It is paired with ZF’s eight‑speed automatic transmission for seamless gear changes and supreme performance.

RANGE ROVER SVAUTOBIOGRAPHY DYNAMIC

Jaguar Land Rover’s SVO division has selected suspension components for the Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic which deliver the ultimate combination of performance and comfort. Items including knuckles, links, springs and dampers are uniquely calibrated, providing a lower ride height (8mm lower than standard model) and more immediate responses to driver inputs.

The interior takes Range Rover to new heights of desirability and refinement. Diamond quilted leather seats with contrast stitching are available in four exclusive colourways, which complement the Ebony perforated leather headliner, giving an immediate impression of luxury. The front fascia and door casings feature a Grand Black veneer, with an additional Red keyline finish on the door casings. In addition, key features, such as the rotary shift controller, start stop button and pedals have a sophisticated knurled finish. Underlining its dynamic positioning, the paddle shifters feature a red anodized finish (except when specified with a tan interior) while the driver’s handbook is bound in quilted leather chosen to match the interior.

The new addition to the range is identified by a series of unique exterior features. The side vents, bonnet finisher, grille, front bumper accents, Range Rover script and tailgate finisher are all finished in Graphite Atlas. Customers have a choice of 21 and 22‑inch alloy wheel designs, as well as three unique finishes.

The SVAutobiography Dynamic is also the first Range Rover available with eye‑catching red Brembo brake calipers.

RANGE ROVER SVAUTOBIOGRAPHY DYNAMIC

In keeping with its more purposeful character, the SVAutobiography Dynamic features bright chrome quad tailpipes that have been optimised to enhance its distinctive V8 soundtrack.

The Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic has been specifically developed by the Special Vehicle Operations team to deliver the most engaging driving experience in our flagship model. It delivers the ultimate combination of performance with Range Rover luxury, befitting its unique position in the portfolio. Hand‑finished at the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire, this incredible Range Rover is for customers desiring breathtaking performance from the luxury SUV that created its sector when it was launched nearly 50 years ago, and continues to lead now.

RANGE ROVER SVAUTOBIOGRAPHY DYNAMIC

The level of personalisation available for 2017 Model Year Range Rover is taken to new heights with the introduction of new exterior finishes available through Special Vehicle Operations.

New colours give customers a more varied choice of metallic and pearlescent options, all available in either gloss or satin matte finishes. The additional options range from traditional shades to bolder, more contemporary choices. From spectacular, deep blacks to dramatic reds, the new paints perfectly complement and finish the design of the world’s most luxurious SUV.

Delivering the exclusive new colour‑ways and finishes for Range Rover is the all‑new high tech Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations facility at Oxford Road, Coventry – a dedicated centre for truly bespoke vehicles.  Part of the new facility’s offering is the SVO Premium Paint Pallette of the latest paint technologies offering any colour in any finish.

The range of specially developed paints utilise cutting‑edge pigment technologies to ensure lasting looks and durability from a palette of 19 individual hues to accommodate all tastes.  Options of tri, tinted or satin matte clear coats or special pigments such as ChromaFlair™ are available to augment finishes even further.  In addition, pearlescent and tinted clear coat finishes have a further layer of effect pigments that combine to achieve dramatic depth of colour and iridescence, as well as durability.

Dual tone finishes are an additional option available from the new SVO Premium Paint Pallete, with vehicles painted in two colours adding further individuality with bespoke pairings and mixes with the smoothest of finishes across the range.

2017 Model Year – Key Features

The 2017 model year Range Rover debuts a selection of innovative new technologies, which provide the building blocks towards fully autonomous driving. The innovative features include Advanced Tow Assist, an intelligent driver aid, which takes the stress out of reversing a trailer, and Intelligent Speed Limiter, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed to suit the speed limit using Traffic Sign Recognition technology.

RANGE ROVER SVAUTOBIOGRAPHY DYNAMIC

SVAutobiography Dynamic also features two driver‑focused technologies designed to deliver improved body control and agility. Dynamic Response improves vehicle handling and occupant comfort by reducing the amount of body lean during cornering. The system controls the front and rear axles independently, delivering increased low‑speed agility, superior high‑speed stability and greater steering precision. Adaptive Dynamics monitors vehicle movements up to 500 times a second, reacting to driver inputs and changes in the road surface to provide greater control without compromising Range Rover’s peerless refinement.

In addition, Driver Condition Monitor and Blind Spot Assist, which autonomously steers the vehicle back into its lane if sensors detect the driver is steering into the path of another road user, are added to an extensive selection of advanced safety features.

Interior changes include a new larger 10‑inch dual view touchscreen display, powered by Land Rover’s market‑leading InControl Touch Pro system. The pinch and zoom tablet‑style touchscreen provides a host of new features including customisable homepages, enhanced satellite navigation functions and instant access to the driver’s favourite apps.

Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography 2014 Review

Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography Road Test

For sheer road presence, is there anything greater than a long-wheelbase Range Rover? Tested in top-specification Autobiography trim, complete with supercharged 5.0-litre V8 power and every mod-con, the motoring.com.au office is hard pressed to find an alternative. Priced from $261,600, it isn’t cheap; unless you compare it to a $423,160 Bentley Flying Spur, then it makes incredible sense. For the ultimate in go-anywhere capability and luxury, turn to the Rangie to tell your story.

Despite all the attributes of an S-Class Mercedes-Benz, it just can’t whisk you to that executive meeting on the Kiewa river bank. A more reasonable person might think this is an irrelevance, but once you’ve been seduced by the LWB Range Rover’s charms, you will forgive the enormous dimensions and thirst for fuel, and want to move in.

‘Our’ Range Rover 5.0 V8 SC LWB Autobiography was finished in Santorini Black with Ebony/Ivory interior trim. Starting at $261,600 (plus on-road costs, or $14,500 over its standard-wheelbase equivalent), the Autobiography specification comes with much fruit, but this particular vehicle was also tastily optioned.

Meridian supplied its ‘Signature Reference’ 1700W audio system (an additional $7790), ‘Style 26’ Semi-Aniline leather rear executive class seats ($7290, includes 18-way electrically-adjustable, memory driver and front passenger seats and rear seats with power recline. Both front and rear rows are internally heated, cooled and massage-capable, and the front pews also have ‘Upper Seat Articulation’.) Privacy glass ($790), digital radio ($730), rear centre console with cooling compartment ($580) and side vent graphics in ‘Atlas’ ($290) round out the options list and take the as-tested MRLP to $279,070 plus on-roads.

This builds on an impressive standard feature list for the LWB Rangie Autobiography. Favourite among chauffeur-driven execs and animation-obsessed children alike is the remote-controlled rear seat entertainment system. Also capable of being controlled via the front 8.0-inch multi-function touchscreen, the kit includes a pair of 10.2-inch screens, two sets of wireless headphones and a single USB port.

Separating the rear occupants is an extension of the centre console with integrated cup holders, climate control functions and that champagne-ready cooling compartment. There were also rear sunblinds, though there were no hints to their operation in the owner’s manual.

The level of lavishness inside is quite extraordinary, then you realise that, for all the dimensional space (at 3120mm, the wheelbase is stretched 200mm over standard and its length runs 5199mm) there’s actually only four seats. When some of its brethren can be had with seven seats, this is hedonism at its finest; who wants to be cramped?

While the long-wheelbase Rangie, erm, range commences at $190,100 for the TDV6, this full-fat version sports the supercharged 5.0-litre petrol V8. With 375kW from 6000-6500rpm, 625Nm from 2500-5500rpm and a claimed combined economy of 13.8L/100km, its vital stats are as gargantuan as the vehicle itself. Coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters (useful when traversing off-road challenges, where you need both hands on the wheel for guidance) the 2413kg beast can accelerate to 100km/h in a scarcely believable 5.8sec.

Despite a standard equipment list as long as a novel, nothing really prepares you for the opulence inside. Leather and wood abound, and it’s all of impeccable quality, and the front-seat headrests with their cocooning bolsters are the softest I’ve ever come across. The massage function might sound gimmicky, but it’s actually soothing, as is the ability to cool or heat the seats to order.

The damped feeling to all key interior controls further grows the feeling of quality, and small touches such as the customisable ambient lighting, full-length panoramic roof and silver 21-inch alloys top it off.

The powerhouse V8 under the bonnet offers a distant grumble into the cabin, and delivers its power in smooth, unruffled fashion. Press the throttle into the thick carpet, however, and the big fella shifts hard, the supercharger whine is audible and the eight-pot makes its acoustics felt.

We’d suggest doing this sparingly, however; while on the freeway the Rangie can slurp under 10L/100km, in the real-world, the stop-start battle of Melbourne traffic sees the fuel consumption move closer to 23L/100km. Thankfully the LWB gains a 105-litre tank, to be filled with minimum 95RON unleaded. If fuel is an issue, there’s always the $248,300 (plus on-roads), 250kW/700Nm SDV8 turbo-diesel which sips a claimed 8.7L/100km.

Once up to speed, the engine note settles down to a whisper, a serenity well-matched by the air suspension’s ability to absorb any bump thrown at it without turning the SUV into a pogo stick. Even the steering is easy to manage and light to touch; it’s just a pity the 13.8m turning circle and 2073mm width make city car parking such a challenge. The price you pay…

It feels sacrilegious to remove this machine from the urban jungle but, as Land Rover will proudly tell you, they build the things to be just as capable off-road as on.

Of course, it has the full suite of Terrain Response options and comes with a low-range gearbox, variable ride height, hill descent control, auto speed limiting and a locking centre differential.

The ribbon-thin profile tyres may be more about looks than action but they cope well off the tarmac, with one exception; they will quickly fill their grooves with mud, at which point the off-road smarts start fiddling with traction control to remove you from a potentially unedifying situation.

With my daughter in the back enjoying Play School and my wife being massaged by the seat but complaining about the time it took to discover her Samsung Galaxy via the Bluetooth connection, the hour-long drive to my parents’ place passed by in a sea of tranquillity.

Never before have I climbed out of a car after that particular trip and felt more awake than I did when I left. That’s the beauty of this extravagance, and though it’s an event to sit in the back occasionally, it’s the driving that makes this Range Rover so compelling. 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography LWB pricing and specifications: Price: $261,600 ($279,070 as-tested, plus on-road costs) Engine: 5.0-litre petrol V8, supercharged Output: 375kW/625Nm Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Fuel: 13.8L/100km (ADR Combined) CO2: 322g/km (ADR Combined) Safety Rating: Five-star (ANCAP)
