Title: talklora: low-rank adaptation for speech-driven animation.

Abstract: Speech-driven facial animation is important for many applications including TV, film, video games, telecommunication and AR/VR. Recently, transformers have been shown to be extremely effective for this task. However, we identify two issues with the existing transformer-based models. Firstly, they are difficult to adapt to new personalised speaking styles and secondly, they are slow to run for long sentences due to the quadratic complexity of the transformer. We propose TalkLoRA to address both of these issues. TalkLoRA uses Low-Rank Adaptation to effectively and efficiently adapt to new speaking styles, even with limited data. It does this by training an adaptor with a small number of parameters for each subject. We also utilise a chunking strategy to reduce the complexity of the underlying transformer, allowing for long sentences at inference time. TalkLoRA can be applied to any transformer-based speech-driven animation method. We perform extensive experiments to show that TalkLoRA archives state-of-the-art style adaptation and that it allows for an order-of-complexity reduction in inference times without sacrificing quality. We also investigate and provide insights into the hyperparameter selection for LoRA fine-tuning of speech-driven facial animation models.

Public Speaking Games

7 fun-filled speech activities for kids of all ages.

By:  Susan Dugdale

If you're looking for fun-filled  speech activities  check these out.

There are  7 tried and tested  public speaking games  on this page - ones that have been a great 'yee-haa-hooray' splendiferous success for me.  You'll find they'll adapt easily to suit children of all ages;  from around middle school to adulthood and don't require a great deal of set-up preparation.

  • Connect the dots
  • Tell us the history of
  • Story starters
  • The big fat lie
  • In the news today

More public speaking games

  • Guidelines for the games

Use them in your class room, with the members of your speech club, as an extension activity for a life skills or communications program, or for home schooling with your family.

They'll help by-pass anxiety, develop and nurture competent, confident public speaking skills, and do it with a large, welcome dollop of fun!

A line drawing of a team of happy people each giving a thumb's up sign. Text: We say YAY to public speaking games.

*  If you're not sure about how to introduce games to your class or group, scroll down to the foot of the page. You'll find handy 'how to begin' guidelines there.

1. Connect the Dots

Connect the dots - 6 dots with an arrow running through them, linking them up.

How to play

Prepare a collection of word cards each with a familiar noun on it. You'll need at least 100. They could be names of famous people, common objects, colors, animals ... For example : bird, wheelbarrow, hammer, cow, witch, moon, grass, hat, elephant, computer, book, vase, elbow, photo, green, candlestick, shoe, painting, mug, plane, eclipse, Queen Elizabeth,  operation, halo, knife, eye, storm, girl, pillow, lid, thermometer, jungle, barn, wheel, thistle, steam, mud, bike, pink, Madonna  ...

Put the word cards into box or non-see through bag.

A player picks two cards and then must immediately begin telling a story connecting both words together convincingly. The story needn't be long, (one to two minutes is enough), complicated, or true!

Once your class is comfortable with connecting two words, add to your word collection and increase the number of cards selected to three or even four.

What this game teaches

In a word - transitions!

Moving from one idea to another smoothly, in a way that can be readily understood and followed by your audience, is a must-have public speaking skill.

Connect the Dots gives people the opportunity to practice.   It doesn't matter how disparate the "dots" or ideas  appear to be, a way can be found to link them, and with practice the ability to make those connections will become stronger and stronger.

An added benefit of the game is listening and learning from each other.

Connect the Dots - an example story

I've picked my two words. They are *Queen Elizabeth and bike, and here's my speech!

"When you think of Queen Elizabeth, what do you see in your mind? Do you see an older woman wearing a diamond studded tiara staring grimly into the camera?

That diagonal sash across her chest proclaims dominion over the commonwealth realms. These include countries as diverse as Canada and Barbados - 32 of them in all. That's serious leadership - around 128 million people, including Prince Phillip, her husband, their four adult children, assorted wives and grandchildren.

Her daily duties would make most of us wince. She answers letters, talks to government officials, reads briefing papers, plans her diary, makes calls to charities, hospitals, factories, schools, museums or military units, performs civic duties like openings and investitures, and tours . That routine hasn't varied for the last 56 years. The Queen is an institution, revered and respected.

But she's also a person. And despite how difficult it may be to imagine, she'll have good days, bad days and days when, in the words of Cyndi Lauper, a girl just wants to have fun.

In my imagination, she wants to poke her tongue out at all the 'must and mustn't dos', toss the tiara sideways and shuck off the designer gowns.

She'd like to walk barefoot through wet grass and float on her back down a summer stream blowing bubbles. She'd like to gallop a horse around Hyde Park without a minder and in the afternoon ride a bike. Starting at the top of Primrose Hill she'll fly down, pedals whirring, yelling 'Look Ma no hands.' It will be glorious. It will be wonderful, and she will be free.

Perhaps it was a glimpse into unfettered being that convinced her to take up skydiving with James Bond for opening of the 2012 Olympics. 86 years old and starring in a royal performance. She showed us. It's never too late to 'get on yer bike' in whatever form it takes. God save the Queen!"

2. Tell us the history of ...

Image: 3 zebras in grassland. Text: How the zebra got his stripes - Tell me the history of ... a public speaking game.

Prepare a starter list of events or things. Write them on slips of paper.

For example: a postage stamp, birthday cake, books, a zebra's stripes, a chimney, the tooth fairy, common sayings like 'a penny for your thoughts', 'a red rag to a bull', 'a pinch and a punch for the first of the month', April Fools Day, a wheel, a Christmas tree, ice cream, a ladder, Father Christmas, May Day, a siren, shaking hands on meeting someone...

Put the topic cards/papers into a non-see through bag.

When it's their turn a player pulls a topic from the bag. They then must give an account of the history (story) behind the thing or event they've drawn.  It needn't be factual!  Encourage imagination, outrageous lies, flights of fantasy...

The goal of this public speaking game is sustained credible fluency. Aim for 1 - 2 minutes per story.

3. End lines

Image: a pair of hands, palms up, with an image of the world on them and flying white doves. Text: Love makes the world go round. End lines - a public speaking game.

You'll need a collection of endings written on slips of paper.

For example: 'Just do it', 'Diamonds are forever', 'He's fallen in the water', 'Some like it hot', 'His bark is worse than his bite', 'Love makes the world go round', 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away', 'First up, best dressed', 'King for a day', 'Funny money', 'Laughter is the best medicine'...

Put the end lines into a non-see through bag.

Each player takes a turn to take an ending from the bag. The task is to tell a 1-2 minute story ending with the line they have selected.

4. Story Starters

Gothic thunderstorm scene - haunted house, dark skies

Write opening sentences or phrases on slips of paper. You'll need one for each member of your group and then some more. For example: 'It was a dark and stormy night', 'I wish people would not say...', 'Yesterday I saw a herd of cows ', 'My favorite activity is bird watching', 'The wisest saying I ever heard was...', 'In 20 years time I will be...', 'It made me yell', 'All I want for Christmas is...', 'Something is terribly wrong...', 'The little voice inside my head...', 'This is the secret I've never shared before', 'I never knew what happened...', 'Sometimes I just want to...', 'You know it's Summer when...', 'Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you', 'The story made me want to...','I heard the best news this morning', 'The sound of people laughing...'

Put the slips of paper into a non-see through bag.

Nominate a person to begin. He/she reaches into the bag and pulls out a story starter. The starter they've drawn must be used to open their story.   A story can be built and extended however the speaker wishes.

5. Oink Substitution

A large pink pig jumping with the word OINK superimposed over its body.

In this game a commonly used word is chosen and then substituted with the word ' oink '. For example: If the selected word is  I , the speaker says  oink  instead.

Oink  can be played several ways.

Playing Oink using well-known stories

Make copies of well-known children's stories. For instance - Red Riding Hood, The Gingerbread Man or Three Little Pigs. (You will find many of them here: american literature.com has hundreds available.)

Next choose a regularly occurring word in each piece to substitute.

Eg. The word 'she' would be suitable in The Gingerbread Man story . Here's the opening paragraph given the 'oink' treatment.

"One day, the cook went into the kitchen to make some gingerbread. OINK took some flour and water, and treacle and ginger, and mixed them all well together, and OINK put in some more water to make it thin, and then some more flour to make it thick, and a little salt and some spice, and then OINK rolled it out into a beautiful, smooth, dark-yellow dough."

Decide who is to start. Ask them to choose a story. They are to read aloud for approximately one minute making sure they use 'oink' in place of the selected word.

Repeat for each member of your group.  Try to have each new reader of the same story pick up from where the last reader of it left off rather than repeat the same passage.

Encourage authoritative readings, full of passion and drama!

Using Oink as an extension activity

Another way to play  Oink  is as an extension of already known games. Try it with  One Minute Speeches , Story Starters or End Lines.

Once your group is confident, add the ' oink ' factor for even more fun! You'll find substitution hones thinking-while-you're-speaking skills really well.

6. The BIG Fat Lie

Young woman with her dog sitting on a mountain ledge high above the clouds.

This game encourages the use of the imagination, develops fluency and, it's fun. In playing it your group will learn about body language too. How do you know when somebody is lying? How can you tell?

Each speaker is to stand so that everyone can see them clearly and share 3 things about themselves on a theme you set.

Examples of theme: holidays, the future, my favorite after school activities, when I was young, my beliefs, the best books I've read, the best adventures I've had..., my family...

Two of the things they say about themselves in relation to the theme are to be true. The third is not .

When they've finished speaking, ask the class/group to identify the lie. And when they have, ask them how they knew. What alerted them to it being untrue?

PS. This makes a great icebreaker for groups getting together for the first time.

7. In the News Today

Image: Cartoon girl on newspaper background. Text: Introducing Milly Reed with today's headline news.

In the last activity making up of this collection of 7 public speaking games, your class/group are broadcasters, anchor people for a news show.

The news is whatever has happened during the day. It could be an event on the way to school like a traffic jam. It might be a new menu in the canteen or lunch room. It could be an announcement the principal made.

It doesn't matter how trivial the happening; encourage the big news treatment for anything at all, even a new set of pencils!

The aim of the exercise is give whatever subject they choose the standard news format. They'll need to cover who, what, where, why, when and how .

Once they've mastered that encourage experimentation; adding introduction hooks, on-the-spot interviews, switch backs and summaries.

Before you begin the games with your class

Lead in guidelines.

Taking the time to set the games up will ensure they go well and go on to become an accepted and eagerly anticipated part of your classroom activities.

  • If your class is new to playing public speaking games start with the simple activities first, for example, the Story Starters.
  • Model or demonstrate each game before you ask them to play themselves.
  • If it's too threatening to have the entire focus of the class on one person at a time - split into smaller groups of 4-6 players and have them work simultaneously. It will be rowdy but worth it!
  • Establish your ground rules for positive participation. You can check out the ones I used in my teaching here: rules for public speaking games
  • Include full class quickfire feedback sessions at the end of each game. I found these invaluable for drawing attention to and reinforcing what had been done well. Be sure to acknowledge any gain - not matter how small!
  • Keep the timing snappy. Too much of any one particular activity will become tedious. Keep it flowing along.

Public speaking games - ebook cover

The ebook has the best of all the games on my site (including the ones on the pages above) and then some more.

Plus, it has full instructions for using each of the games and printables. It is the type of one-stop-time-saving resource I wanted to find when I was full time teaching and didn't .

My freebie pages are good but if your commitment to leading/teaching a public speaking class is ongoing, the ebook is better, more complete.

2 Minute Speech on the Impact of Computer Games on Youth

Red Lighted Candles Christmas Gift

Until some years ago, when children talked about games it meant team games like football , cricket , hockey, basketball, shuttle, tennis and the like. But today games are more or less dominated by computer games in the minds of youngsters.

Blood Jesus Cleanse

Again, until some time ago, blue whale was the answer to the question “Which is the biggest animal on earth?” But no longer. Blue Whale is the name of an online computer game played over social networks which encourages youngsters to do certain tasks ending in suicide.

So let me spell out the topic for my speech. It is the Impact of Computer Games on Youth. It is very clear that youngsters interact with video games in much deeper ways physically, emotionally, and mentally than with other popular media like films. You can also read Gaming as Career, Entertainment, and Addiction! for further insight on gaming.

First let me focus on the benefits of computer games.

Many claim that computer games improve co-ordination, attention, concentration and problem-solving skills. It also enhances memory, helps in multitasking capability and can also be used as excellent teaching tools.

There are video games like building a city or helping others. These can help a youngster to be socially responsible and behave with care and concern for others.

Computer games, some people say, help youngsters to get familiar with the online world. It allows them to become smart kids and builds perseverance in them as many computer games have different levels which the gamer has to master.

Quick thinking, fast analysis, intelligent use of resources and management, planning and strategy and situational awareness are some other benefits that people highlight.

Let us assume that all these are good. Let us now look at some of the negatives.

Very young children are also exposed to the world of computer gaming. Sometimes these games can encourage violence and crime. So there should be a supervision of what type of game is played.

Secondly, the amount of time one spends on computer games have to be limited. There are known cases of people spending long hours on games without eating, mingling with friends or studying. This affects health as well as the person’s ability to interact with other people face to face.

Thirdly women are generally portrayed in games as weak and as kind of objects. It is a kind of negative stereotyping. It can wrongly impact the young boys and the way they treat women.

Again, there are studies which show that video games can lead to aggressive behaviour because of constantly playing games which require the gamer to take part in violence.

Another difficulty with video games is that parents rarely spend time with their children trying to find out what games they play. So parents lose a chance of bonding with their children; they lose the chance to spend quality time with their kids and of course they lose the chance to understand what type of behaviour change is occurring in their children because of the video games they play.

Finally, there is the danger of not differentiating between the real world and the fantasy world. Unless the youngsters are taught between the differences in the gaming world and the real world there can come moments of confusion and disappointment.

Let me conclude by saying that we cannot forget the fact video games and gaming have become a multi-billion dollar industry . It might easily be the fastest growing entertainment in the world today. The high quality of graphics giving a greater sense of virtual reality is drawing people more and more into a different world far removed from the real one. And it is impacting youngsters in a big way. Only time will tell of how the life of youth changed with video games dominating their play, study, thinking, and relationships.

Jesus Is Risen!

Should Violent Video Games Be Banned?

Speech on Should Violent Video Games Be Banned: Playing games always helps one to maintain physical strength. Whether it be long hours or for a few minutes, training the brain with an activity always helps one engage in an activity.

But what if video games are blamed for spreading violence? Will it still be justified to support violent video games?

Just like there are two sides of a coin, there are both negative and positive impacts of playing video games. Here’s a speech on should violent video games be banned or not.

Long Speech on Speech on Should Violent Video Games Be Banned?

Hello and welcome to all the teachers and fellow students. Today we all are gathered here to share our views on the contentious topic that has sparked across the various platforms— Should Violent Video Games Be Banned?

Pros For Banning Violent Video Games

Let’s discuss what can be possible positive points for banning violent video games:

1. Potential Impact on Aggressive Behaviour

Violent video games such as Resident Evil, The Witcher, and Bioshock likewise suggest a correlation between video games and increased violent behaviour among children.

The gaming disorder hinders them from understanding and regulating human emotions and results in aggression, depression, and an anxious state.

2. Protecting Vulnerable Audiences

Younger players, who aren´t able to justify wrong and right actions might result in deficit or depressive symptoms. Symptoms of feeling sad, hopeless, and furious are some of the negative impacts of such negative impacts of violent video games.

Banning such video games can help the vulnerable audience from potential negative consequences.

3. Public Safety

Individuals who love to mitigate their favourite characters might carry the same with violent video games. Killing of people, and animals, foul language, and use and abuse of drugs and alcohol are some of the examples of harmful acts.

Banning such fierce video games may be seen as a precautionary measure to mitigate the risk of such individuals.

Cons Against Banning Violent Video Game

Let us understand whether it is correct to ban video games just because of their violent likeness:

1. Freedom of Expression

Do you find it justified to ban a speech of expression? Video games are a part of art and creative voice like other forms of media.

Banning video games with violence is a violation of the creator´s artistic freedom and its impressions. Also, it restricts the potential for storytelling and creativity.

2. Impact of Industry

As per the data of Statista Market Insights, the video game market is forecasted to reach a revenue of US$389.70 billion by 2028, which is undoubtedly a considerable figure. Banning video games because of their depiction is not justified.

Also, banning the violent video games industry could result in severe economic consequences, leading to job losses and economic downturns.

3. Risk of Creating a Black Market

Banning video games with violence can create a secret illegal or black market. These video games, which will be accessed by different groups of children, including minors, might not be safe or regulated.

Also, there is the possibility of creating hidden illegal businesses too.

Banning video games with violent depictions is not a solution. Practice should be done to encourage children to consider what they are watching or playing. Instead of putting restrictions, suggest or advise them to learn how to handle situations.

Violent video games express freedom and individual responsibility; thus, one cannot hinder one’s fundamental rights and views.

Many factors contribute to a person’s behaviour. However, it cannot be denied that violent video games don’t create mental disorder problems.

The relationship between violent video games and anxiety varies from person to person. Excessive video games with violent depictions without proper guidance can cause anxiety.

Parents can communicate, keep themselves informed about the games, and use parental controls for violent video games.

The Best Online Games for Speech Therapy

What is an online game for speech therapy, types of online games, indicators of an online game that’s great for speech therapy.

You want to look for games that are:

  • consistently working without any issues or hangs
  • on sites with reputable customer service in the case that issues do arise
  • colorful and engaging

I always suggest screening games prior to using them in a speech session just to make sure they are appropriate from start to finish. In addition to the criteria above, you of course want to choose something that either directly or indirectly addresses the speech and language goals you’re working on. There are many games out there, but there are fewer online speech therapy games. You want to pick a game that either directly targets a skill or can be tailored to target a skill. Otherwise, the game is just a time-filler and you’re not actually addressing speech or language through the use of the game.

  • digital flashcards

  • multiple choice
  • true and false
  • open-ended picture description scenes

The Best Online Games and Activities for Speech Therapy

The best online resource is going to be something that:

  • your student will engage with
  • doesn’t distract your student to the point that they won’t participate in an interactive way
  • is easy and enjoyable for the SLP to use

Best is subjective, of course, but I would like to share my favorite digital speech therapy games and activities with you. Below this list, I’ve put together some quick videos to show you some of these resources in action:

English Summary

1 Minute Speech on Video Games In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Video Games’.

Simply put, video games are those games played virtually played on a computer screen or a television screen or perhaps a PlayStation.

There are several types of video games in existence, over 30 in fact! Some of them, namely, are Sandbox, Real-time strategy (RTS), Shooters (FPS and TPS), Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), Role-playing (RPG, ARPG, and More), Simulation and sports, Puzzlers and party games, and Action-adventure.

Out of these, Action Games, Adventure Games, Role-Playing Games, Strategy Games, and Simulation Games are popular.

7 talks on the benefits of gaming

[ted id=1618]

This weekend, hundreds of video games enthusiasts lined up in the cold, waiting 12 hours-plus to be the first to get their hands on Nintendo’s new console, the Wii U. And when the game  Call of Duty: Black Ops was released in 2010, gamers around the world played it for more than 600 million hours in just the first 45 days. That is the equivalent of 68 years.

While some people worry about the popularity of video games, in today’s talk, brain scientist Daphne Bavelier suggests that gaming may be far more beneficial than we think (in moderation) — even if the game is all about shooting up the enemy.

“Most of you have thought, ‘Come on, can’t you do something more productive than shooting zombies?’ I’d like you to put this knee-jerk reaction in the context of how you’d feel if you found your girl playing Soduku,” Bavelier says. “In reasonable doses, action-packed shooter games have quite powerful positive effects on many different aspects of our behavior.”

In the lab, Bavelier and her team measure the impact of gameplay on the brain. While your mom might have told you that staring at screens will wreck your eyes, Bavelier’s lab actually found that playing 5 to 15 hours a week of video games correlates with better vision — and the ability to see more detail in the context of clutter.

It’s another common trope that gaming causes attention problems. However, Bavelier shows data that people who play video games are better able to keep track of objects around them — while the average person can track three objects effectively, video gamers can track six to seven objects. They’re also better able to multitask in general.

Initial studies suggest that these benefits may be trainable. In one study, Bavelier’s lab gave participants a test, and then asked them to play 10 hours of video games over a period of two weeks. When they came back for a post-test, their performance improved — and the improvement was still measurable five months later. Bavelier’s lab hopes to use these findings to create games that can improve eyesight or help keep the brains of senior citizens sharp.

To hear more about Bavelier’s studies, watch her talk . And after the jump, six other talks that suggest video games may simply have a bad reputation.

Jane McGonigal: Gaming can make a better world Video game designer Jane McGonigal is deeply inspired by video games like World of Warcraft — because they call on players to become heroes and save worlds.  In this blockbuster talk from TED2010, she shares why she thinks it’s possible to harness the power of gaming to solve real-world problems like hunger, poverty, climate change and war.

Gabe Zichermann: How games make kids smarter Gabe Zichermann wishes that we could channel the era of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? —when students, parents and teachers agreed that video games were great. In this talk from TEDxKids@Brussels, Zichermann suggests that video games make kids better at problem-solving and multitasking, and should be championed rather than villainized.

[ted id=1053]

Ali Carr-Chellman: Gaming to re-engage boys in learning Many boys are having a hard time in school—they’re disproportionally suspended, marked as learning disabled, and diagnosed with ADHD. In this talk from TEDxPSU, Ali Carr-Chellman ponders whether this could be a simple culture clash. She shares a fascinating idea — that creating educational video games full of rich narratives could help boy culture connect with school culture.

[ted id=996]

Tom Chatfield: 7 ways games reward the brain Video games are transfixing, says Tom Chatfield at TEDGlobal 2010. Why? Because they offer emotional rewards and satisfy our ambitions. In this talk, he wonders if other tasks — for example, going green or losing weight — could be made fun by emulating the brilliance of game design.

[ted id=1501]

Jane McGonigal: The game that can give you 10 extra years of life After a severe concussion, Jane McGonigal found herself on mandatory bedrest and feeling deeply depressed. In this talk from TEDGlobal 2012, she shares how she found her way out of a downward spiral — by creating a video game, SuperBetter , that helps people heal. ( Check out the TED Blog post: 10 online games … with a social purpose .)

[ted id=361]

David Perry: Are games better than life? Speaking in 2006, game designer David Perry says we’re at an interesting moment in video game history—where graphics and audio have gotten extremely lifelike. Which means that the next generation (meaning: now) could have games that actually surpass real life. While Perry is excited for what’s to come, he points out that video game makers have a big responsibility given their influence and reach, and hopes that his industry will rise to the challenge. What do you think: Has it?

Articulation Cards for Sensory Bins

Need a good set of  articulation cards  that could be used in a sensory bin?

Or maybe you want to place these articulation cards in  a fun container ,  or feed them to a  puppet ?

These articulation flash cards are in the shape of mouths, so your younger students will have the perfect visual reminder for the correct production of speech sounds!

These articulation picture cards can also double as  speech room decor , which is a huge bonus! You can attach them to binder rings for easy storage. Then, hang them on the wall of your speech room.

This is an initial k words speech therapy sensory bin game that can be used with preschoolers.

Cluster Reduction Phonology Games

If you have phonology students on your caseload, you might enjoy these magical-themed  cluster reduction games and activity sheets .

They target r blends, l blends. and s blends.

There is a fun “magical” theme. This means that your students will encounter wizards, dragons, fairies, knights, princesses, and gnomes while practicing target words!

There are printable game boards, spinners, smash mats, and dice games.

You won’t run out of things to do while practicing saying both sounds in a consonant cluster!

Send extra copies of these games and activities home so that family members can practice the articulation targets in fun and engaging ways with your student as well!

By the way, speech-language pathologists might also wish to check out these  consonant cluster reduction activities  and this  list of the different phonological processes .

This is an articulation game that targets s blends. It can be used with phonology students who are working on consonant cluster reduction in speech therapy.

  • Articulation Drill Game Companion

Are you a speech-language pathologist on the hunt for a fun speech-therapy activity that involves easy prep?

Your articulation students will choose this  articulation drill game companion  over and over again!

It’s simple to use.

Just print out the page that works best with your target sound. For example, your student might be targeting  prevocalic r .

This is an articulation game for speech therapy that targets prevocalic r words.

I like to laminate the pages or place them in a sheet protector, but that’s up to you!

Here’s how it works.

Your student will choose a card from the card deck.

They will match the color or symbol (i.e. “draw 2”) to the target word on their piece of paper.

Then, they will practice saying that target word.

So, if your student draws a red card, he might just have to practice the word “four” on the vocalic or final page!

The Pedi Speechie is in no way associated with the well-known card game, which is trademarked. You will, however, need that card game in order to use this resource.

Articulation Games for Speech Therapy (Older Students)

Here are two articulation activities that could be used with upper elementary and even middle school students who are working on speech and language skills.

Articulation Challenge Worksheets

Older students will love trying out these articulation challenge worksheets during speech therapy sessions!

They provide a great way to turn articulation drill into a competitive game.

This is not a digital activity. It is meant to be hands-on and interactive, so you’ll print out the desired page.

Students “type” their articulation words onto the keyboard image on the paper. After that, they practice saying their target words.

This is an articulation worksheet that targets final sh words for speech therapy. It can be used with elementary students.

Want to make it competitive? The first student to finish typing and saying target words correctly is the winner!

For example, if your student is practicing the “sh” sound, he will have to first type out the word “eyelash” and then say it correctly.

Many different sounds are targeted, including sh, ch, voiced th, voiceless th, r, l, s and z.

Articulation Playing Card Companion

Have a deck of cards on hand?

Perfect! Here’s a fun way to use them in speech and language therapy.

You can pair these  articulation sheets  with your deck of cards.

Play any card game you want, but just check off the cards you draw while practicing target words.

This is voiced th final words speech therapy activity for articulation that can be paired with a deck of playing cards.

Your students could also use the target words to practice at the sentence level by generating their own sentences.

One open-ended page is provided. This will allow you to practice any articulation target words of your choice during your speech therapy session.

Board Games for Articulation Trials

Looking for a simple game that allows for a quick break while practicing articulation drills?

You can’t go wrong with  Spot It .

I simply have my students say their target words, then we take a quick turn at the game with a simple flip of our cards.

It’s a lot of fun seeing who can spot the matching pictures first!

Likewise, your students might also enjoy  Pizza Party Dice Game . This one is a great game for motivating students!

Your student can say target sounds, then roll the dice. The dice contain pictures of pizza toppings, and you need to match the toppings to the exact ones pictured on your pizza slice.

Who can cover their pizza the fastest? This game will be a hit in individual or group speech therapy sessions!

14-Year-Old PS3 Game Discovered at Walmart

What is the max level in black myth: wukong, black myth: wukong— how to get fine gold thread & how to use it.

Video games have been speaking to us ever since 1980, when arcade and Atari titles like Bezerk began synthesizing robotic voices - hashing out grainy one-liners of instruction and inspiration. These audio endeavors soon materialized into real-life voice acting, and before long extended dialogue sequences were a presentational staple, cinematic cutscenes were commonplace, and riveting characters began uttering riveting speeches and monologues. Conversing became immersing.

As facial animation and visual realism grows ever stronger, and the voice-acting talent pool ever fuller, the art of the video game speech has reached its highest state yet in this generation.

Which moments made our top 5? Read on to find out.

[ SPOILER WARNING] Massive spoilers to the endings of BioShock and Metal Gear Solid 4 are found within pages 4 and 6, respectively. Click with caution .

Mass Effect - Kirrahe Holds the Line

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXLVFnl3WcE

Sharp. Precise. Invoking but to-the-point. In little more than a minute, Captain Kirrahe gets his band of Salarian brothers ready for a suicide mission long before Mass Effect 2 rewrote the definition. Sure, objective completion and intuitive thinking might save the Captain a smattering of his men, but individually, these sons of the 3rd Infiltration Regiment STG are fully devoted to the notion that this, here on Virmire, is their final hour. For many, it will be.

Without the leadership of Kirrahe (who’s appropriately named after a mountain used to prepare U.S. paratroopers for D-Day ) Shepard’s mission never would have had a chance. Saren — the Reapers — would reign supreme.

But not this day. With a swift salvo of rhetoric, a timely thunder clap from the God of Punctuation, one of the more resonant moments in Mass Effect makes it mark. And the line is held.

Killzone 2 - Visari Readies for Bloodshed

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c2tX0Tdp-Q

Warmongering diatribes are a hallmark of the Visari administration - if Killzone provides an accurate account of it. Though played through the eyes of his enemies (AKA the good guys), each game in the series has opened to the pater familias of the Helghan Empire inciting his catechized corps of Helghast troops to the cause of ISA annihilation. With the walls closing in at the introduction of Killzone 2 , Scolar Visari spins his masterpiece: the “hold the line” speech every dictator dreams of.

Rico’s irritable avoidance of Visari’s stern warning even seeds the interlude sequence with a small touch of foreshadowing: The ISA have no idea what’s waiting on the planet Helghan, and the bloody montage that ensues when the speech concludes proves that this man means every word. It’s all the welcome back a Killzone 1 fan could have asked for.

BioShock — Confronting Andrew Ryan

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14pQ5B0iTUs

It’s one of the moments that defined the first BioShock : the haunting pre-mortem soliloquy of Andrew Ryan.

Here was a man who so despised Altruism — he believed every man was “entitled to the sweat of his own brow” — that he rejected the social hierarchies of sea-level civilization to construct his own metropolis, Rapture, leagues-deep in the middle of the Atlantic. He convinced society’s finest minds — doctors, scientists, entrepreneurial geniuses — to join him, and together they forged a thriving cultural mecca. At least, that’s how it began.

This Utopian ambition is introduced to us in an opening monologue that’s spectacular on its own — but even more powerful is our first/final live encounter with Ryan, after his dream has crumbled into pieces. It is at this moment when we witness his life’s cruel irony: a man of such Altruism animus, initiating his own death when it will only save others — Jack; Dr. Tenenbaum; the Little Sisters, if they’re alive — hollow objects of welfare, now, with his real love, the fruit of his labor, spoiling into decay.

But the speech isn’t memorable for its deadly swings of fate (if of golf clubs). In the end, we look back on Andrew Ryan’s death the way we do his life. In the end, he chose; a man, not a slave.

Gears of War 2 - Prescott Brings the Fight to the Locust

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m55z6O5Qlc

There are no would-you-kindly’s in Gears of War ; it’s a rarity when orders and observations aren’t grunted through teeth, laced with profanities or giddy about the amount of viscera splashing around at any given moment. But when the series does try to step away from its traditional bawdy bounds, when it overthrows action for emotion, poignancy, and carefully scripted drama, occasionally it will hit the mark surprisingly well.

Case in point: At the beginning of Gears of War 2 , with the COG haven of Jacinto on the verge of Locust annihilation, the Honorable Chairman Richard Prescott puts the entire human race on his shoulders and commemorates the first day Sera takes the fight to its underworld invaders in riveting fashion. He’s a windbreaker and walkie-talkie away from jumping in a King Raven and personally leading the assault.

The COG leader is described better as enigmatic than charismatic, and is scantly depicted as endearing throughout the main Gears trilogy. The gravity of the situation brings out his best, however, and while Prescott may not seem the ideal rallying symbol to motivate his army and the audience, both are left ravenous by the time he’s finished.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Big Boss' Parting Words

Sometimes, the best speeches are those that don’t require a pulpit or a megaphone. When an organic moment between two or more readily-oratory participants suddenly produces a one-way conversation: one person gets on a roll — musing, brooding, eulogizing, ranting — and everyone else realizes it’s best to shut up and listen… and standby for cigar service, if necessary.

Big Boss closes out Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots with one such speech, the final reflections of an illustrious life silencing his last-living son, Solid Snake, into the role of a graceful bystander. The FOXHOUND founder formerly known as Naked Snake bears all (metaphorically speaking). Reflecting on exploits decades-past, appealing for recompense long-overdue, and dreaming about a future era that’s fast-approaching — it’s Hideo Kojima’s way of passing the torch to the next generation (be it the rapidly-ripened Snake or a completely different tangent — we’ll know when Metal Gear Solid 5 is revealed ) whilst tactfully closing the encyclopedia on the past. Furthermore, this being the work of said director, there almost has to be some sort of symbolism, some foreshadowing clue hidden with the patchwork of those white annual flowers. We won’t attempt to decode Kojima here, but it’s one of many reasons we keep returning to some of his finest work.

From a Salarian captain in Mass Effect to a business magnate in BioShock to a warrior politician in Gears of War , video games have shown how speeches can thrill - and also kill; an autocratic dictator in Killzone can revel in a bloody conflict while a lifelong solider in Metal Gear Solid sheds away its memory.

But even as the five speeches here are a testament to modern gaming’s ever-growing emotional spectrum, it’s important to remember their debt of gratitude to the moments of speaking splendor of generations gone by: the Metal Gear Solid’s, the Half-Life’s and so many more.

And as for the honorable mentions — that’s up to you. What other speeches deserve recognition? Which do you find inspirational? Which exciting, provoking, or eliciting of tears? Feel free to share in the comments below.

Computer Games Essay

This page analyzes a  computer games essay  and also notes how you can make good use of the question to plan and organize your essay.

You have to be careful with this essay as although you have to discuss the pros and cons of the issue, there is a second part to the question that is not about this.

Take a look at the IELTS task 2 question:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

What are the positive and negative impacts of playing computer games and what can be done to minimize the bad effects?

The Topic and the Task

Remember to always analyze the question carefully. The topic should be fairly clear:

  • Computer games

Remember to also look carefully to see if the topic is being narrowed down to a particular aspect of the topic. In this case it is:

Children Computer Games Essay

Now you need to check what the task is. How many things do you have to write about?

Hopefully you realized there are three things that you can easily turn into brainstorming questions:

  • What are the positive impacts of computer games on children?

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Computer Games Essay Model Answer:

Access to computers has increased significantly over recent decades, and the number of children playing games on computers has increased too. This essay will consider the positive and negative impacts of this and discuss ways to avoid the potential negative effects.

With regards to the positive effects, playing computer games can develop children’s cognitive skills. Many popular games require abstract and high level thinking skills in order to win, skills that may not be taught at school. For example, children need to follow instructions, solve complex problems and use logic in many of the games that are currently popular. Such experience will be beneficial to a child’s progression into an adult.

However, concerns have been raised about the prolific use of computer games by children, much of this related to the violence they contain. The problem is that in many of the games children are rewarded for being more violent, and this violence is repeated again and again. For instance, many games involve children helping their character to kill, kick, stab and shoot. This may lead to increased aggressive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.

In order to minimize these negative impacts, parents need to take certain steps. Firstly, some video games are rated according to their content, so parents must check this and ensure their children are not allowed to have access to games that are unsuitable. Parents can also set limits on the length of time games are played. Finally, parents should also take an active interest in the games their children are playing so they can find out how they feel about what they are observing.

To sum up, there are benefits of computer games, but there are disadvantages too. However, if parents take adequate precautions, the severity of these negative impacts can be avoided.
