Usually, essay writing is assigned as homework. The reason for this is that a well-thought out writing must go through a number of stages that can easily consume a lot of classroom time. Many teachers feel that those contact minutes could be better spent focusing on other more interactive activities that can build on other areas of education. However, it's worth taking into consideration that assigning writing tasks to be completed in class also has its own benefits. According to David Gooblar of Pedagogy Unbound, â There is a great deal of value to be gained by both student and teacher when in-class writing assignments are incorporated into regular lesson plans. When the class day begins with a writing assignment, it helps students to focus their attention on school activities. Students have different backgrounds and family dynamics and they may enter the classroom with all sorts of things on their minds. By providing them a quiet period of writing, you help them to naturally shift their focus to school and the studies for the whole day. If the writing assignment is designed to introduce the next lesson, they will be mentally prepared to receive the information. In-class writing assignments are also great to improve students' recall. Rather than giving a full class lecture and hoping that the students were attentive enough to take notes, consider adding a writing project in the mix. After speaking for a period of time, stop periodically and ask students to write down what they've understood. Allowing them time to write while the information is still fresh in their minds will help them to retain more of the information they need to remember. It also helps to engage students who may not be auditory learners by engaging some of the other learning styles into the lesson. This practice can also be equally effective when you close the day with a writing assignment. Students need to understand that writing is not just about putting words on paper. It is a means of communication. Today, many students believe that they are effective communicators; every day they send out countless text messages, emails, and other techy type notices. While they are communicating on a certain level, they are losing touch with how the rest of the world communicates. Writing is an important skill that will carry them well into their future. By guiding students through all the phases of the writing process, will help them learn how to communicate with all kinds of people on all different levels. Writing is not limited to a Language Arts or Literature class. It bridges all other subjects that may be taught. A writing assignment can be taught in every educational discipline. According to the SERC portal, Pedagogy in Action, When a student has to lay out a writing assignment, they need to make decisions. They learn how to incorporate abstract ideas and lay them out in a concrete and orderly form. Through this process they learn how to sort out details and identify weaker parts of their arguments or ideas. In class, students can do this through brainstorming exercises, sequencing their thoughts, drafting their paper, and making revisions. All of these can be taught through shorter in-class writing assignments before you send them home to work on their own. The benefits of giving students in-class writing assignments are extensive. Contrary to what many may believe, it is a very practical use of those classroom hours as it helps to develop each individual studentâs sense of confidence in their abilities when it comes to tapping into another part of the creative mind. This is a special teacher, a special person who helps special children. It was then that I […] Why i Became a Preschool TeacherFor many years, the uncertainty of what age a child should start school has been an ongoing problem. When the time comes, eventually parents need to send their children to school. Who doesn’t like a head start? Why not take advantage of the early opportunity? It could also […] The Positive Effects of School UniformsStudents should wear school uniforms. The argument against school uniforms is that they restrict the freedom of expression and only minimally improve a school. But an argument can be made that uniforms make getting dressed in the morning easier for all parties involved. Schools no longer have to worry over what students are wearing, parents needn't shell out large amounts of cash, and the students just have to get up and put no effort into what they will wear saving […] My Philosophy of Education as a Teacher: Complexities of Nursing EducationThe Convergence of Nursing Theory and Teaching Philosophy "The ultimate goal of nursing education is to prepare the student to think critically, communicate accurately, and perform indicated therapeutic nursing interventions in patient care situations; exhibit the caring behavior inherent in nursing actions; apply an ethical perspective in clinical decision making; and function effectively as a team member…". Swanson (1993) identified five processes involved in care: knowing, being with, doing for, enabling, and maintaining belief. The process of “being with” is further explained by the sub dimensions of being there, conveying ability, sharing feelings, and not-burdening (Swanson, 1993). This process does not necessarily refer to the physical presence of […] MY TEACHING CAREERDear Mrs. Bisdorf I chose teaching as my career because although it might be challenging the job at some point rewarding. Perceiving homosexuality as inappropriate sexuality and mental illness without convincing scientific evidence and empirical substantiation, to a great extent, reflects the society’s homophobia and ignorance. Homosexual teachers, although an esteemed profession, are particularly vulnerable to such discrimination. For a […] Poverty in the United StatesPoverty is a major issue in our world today, it is when people are not able to afford a minimum standard of living to survive. Each student is going to need something different, and […] Functional BehaviorA very important aspect in any classroom and to teachers is behavioral management. A teacher may have a student that displays a pattern of episodes of challenging behavior that are typically frequent and on a regular basis. Teachers first need to make an informal observation of the child's behavior to figure out how often the behavior […] Rethinking Special Education Due ProcessIntroduction In today's society, children with disability attend the same schools together with the children without disability. However, this was not the case some years back. Initially, a parent would stay with his or her child with disability at home, or the parent would pay for expensive private education for the children. This was about to change when parents formed advocacy groups to advocate for change. The group aimed at promoting educational needs for children that are handicapped in the […] Fitness TestingFitness testing is the testing conducted in physical education classes that test students to see how healthy they are. Students are expected to fall into a category called the Healthy Fitness Zone and if a student's scores are in this area then he or she is considered healthy. The FitnessGram tests focus more on the students' […] Cell Phones May be BeneficialWhile cell phones may be beneficial, the cons for cell phones outweigh the pros in classrooms. Although cell phones may aid in learning and allow parents to contact their children, the time in […] Four Components of Developing Successful Reading SkillsOral language Oral language is an important medium of communication among a child. Finally, this procedure must be constant and progressing, not just […] Students Dealing with Posttraumatic Stress DisorderThe topic I chose to do my problems in disaster psychology over was students dealing with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. In my first paper, I described several problems that schools may face due to this disorder. One of the main problems I pointed out was student recognition of the disorder. Kids do not always know how to deal with stress especially when they have never been taught about it. Most schools expect students to be the ones recognizing the symptoms they […] Societies Role in Human TraffickingHuman Trafficking is defined as the action/practice of illegally transporting people from one country/area to another, typically for the purpose of forced labor or sexual exploitation. A college degree is usually not a requirement to care for young children, yet when childcare providers show evidence of a college degree, the result can be two fold, quality early care for children and higher pay.
