Creating an engaging and professional video presentation requires more than just delivering information—it's about connecting with your audience. Whether you're crafting a presentation for a business, sales, school, or onboarding , adding a video of yourself can transform your PowerPoint slides into a dynamic (and personal!) storytelling tool.

This guide covers two ways to video record yourself into a PowerPoint: recording your presentation directly in PowerPoint and using the free online video editor, Clipchamp , to elevate your videos. Learn how to elevate your video presentations in this step-by-step guide.

Step 1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint and navigate to the record tab

Head over to the PowerPoint application to start your webcam recording in PowerPoint. Next, click on the record tab to launch recording options.

In order to produce high-quality recordings, it's important to pay attention to a few key factors: a stable internet connection, a quiet recording environment, and good lighting. Once these are sorted, consider setting up your technical tools correctly.

Here's how to configure your recording setup when using PowerPoint or Clipchamp.

How to setup PowerPoint’s recording features

As mentioned above, PowerPoint allows you to record your slides as well as your camera. Take a look at some considerations to record without errors.

Video source setup : Navigate to the recording tab in PowerPoint. Here, you can select your video source—usually your computer’s built-in webcam or an external camera connected to your computer. Ensure the camera is correctly selected and positioned.

Audio source setup : Select your audio input source in the same recording tab. This could be your laptop’s internal microphone, an external microphone, or another connected audio device. Choose the best-quality microphone available and record audio to check for clarity and volume. Adjust the microphone settings to reduce background noise and ensure your voice is clear and audible.

Preview and testing : Before starting the actual recording, do a test run to see and hear how you appear and sound in the recording. This test will help you adjust the camera position, audio settings, and move to another location if the lighting or background noise are distracting.

How to setup screen and webcam recording in Clipchamp

Configure your recording settings in Clipchamp to optimize video and audio quality.

Choose a presentation size: A standard 16:9 aspect ratio is suitable for most presentations.

Set up your screen and camera recording permissions : Go to the record & create tab on the toolbar. Next, click on the screen tool or screen and camera tool. A popup window will appear requesting permissions. Allow Clipchamp access to your camera and microphone if you haven't used our webcam recorder before. Click allow when ready to proceed.

Choose screen source : Either record your browser tab, window, or entire screen through the popup window.

Choose webcam and audio source: Select your microphone source, camera source and select speaker coach if desired through the popup window.

Trim away mistakes

Use the intuitive trimming tool in Clipchamp to remove unnecessary segments of your screen recording, webcam video or audio voiceover in a few clicks. This helps maintain the engagement in your presentation. Learn how in this tutorial video .

Use captions to create accessible videos

Generate real-time captions for your video presentation to make it easier to understand on mute with the autocaptions feature . Just turn on autocaptions to automatically create a video transcript which consists of an index of timestamps to help you navigate your video better.

Add annotation stickers to enhance messages

Draw attention to specific elements within your PowerPoint presentation by overlaying sticker annotations. In the content library tab on the toolbar, search through an endless range of shapes and annotations like arrows, squares, circles, stars, graphics, and more.

Speed up and slow down videos

If your presentation is too slow or too fast, easily edit your video’s speed with the beginner friendly speed selector . Just remember to make your presentation speed easy to understand and not too fast.

Add text animations for clarity

This can help reinforce your messages and ensure they resonate with your audience. Provide more context for viewers with text animations . Choose from a wide range of professional titles like multiline, lower third, bouncing, mirror and more. Customize titles to suit your presentation theme with different fonts, colors, sizes, and positions .

Use ASL stickers to enhance videos

Make your PowerPoint videos more accessible for work, school, or social media with the help of popular American Sign Language video stickers . Just place an ASL sticker side by side with your video content or as a standalone clip to convey meaning to the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Adjust your webcam footage

Make your webcam videos appear more vibrant and professional-looking with the color correction tools . These tools allow you to adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation simply.

Microsoft Office vs. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides: Which Is Best?

You can now get a plush android from google, how to use available light to create striking photos with your smartphone, quick links, requirements for the cameo feature, insert the cameo object on a slide, customize the cameo object, control the camera while presenting.

Do you want to be visible on-screen while presenting your slideshow? If you've got a webcam handy, you can put yourself on every slide in your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation using the Cameo feature.

You can place the camera feed anywhere on your slide, size it to your liking, apply a style, add an effect, and arrange it with other items on your slide.

As the president of your company, leader of a charitable organization, or developer of a new product, this is a great way to bring a personal touch to your presentation. Rather than just hearing your voice using narration , your audience can see your face as well.

As of July 2022, the PowerPoint Cameo feature is available to Office Insiders and rolling out to Microsoft 365 subscribers on Windows and Mac in the coming months.

To use this feature, you must grant permission for PowerPoint to use the camera on your device.

On Windows, open your Settings from the Start menu and select "Privacy." On the left, choose "Camera." On the right, turn on the toggles for Allow Apps to Access Your Camera and Allow Desktop Apps to Access Your Camera.

Camera access settings on Windows

On Mac, open the System Preferences from your Dock or the Apple icon in your menu bar and select "Security & Privacy." Open the Privacy tab and on the left, choose "Camera." On the right, check the box for Microsoft PowerPoint.

Camera access settings on Mac

You can place the Cameo element on one slide or all. If you use it on multiple slides, the feed continues seamlessly through each slide in the presentation.

Choose a slide, go to the Insert tab, and select "Cameo" in the Camera section of the ribbon.

You'll see the Cameo object appear on your slide.

To choose the camera you want to use, if you have more than one, select the object and go to the Camera tab that appears. Click the Preview (Camera Preview on Mac) drop-down arrow on the left side of the ribbon and pick the camera you want to use.

Preview drop-down with camera selection

Currently, virtual cameras are not supported for the feature.

You can then drag to move it anywhere you like and drag a corner or edge to resize it.

To see a preview of the Cameo, either click the camera icon inside the object or the Preview (Camera Preview on Mac) button on the Camera tab.

Cameo preview enabled

Like images and videos you insert , you can customize the Cameo object too. Give it a new style, add a border, or apply an effect.

Select the Cameo object and head to the Camera tab that appears. On the left, use the Camera Styles box to pick a shape with an effect like shadow or a frame.

To the right of the Camera Styles, you can also use the Camera Shape, Camera Border, and Camera Effects drop-down menus to select different options.

Camera Styles and other options

You can use the Design Ideas on the Home tab for options on how to lay out the slides using Cameo.

To arrange the Cameo with other slide elements, use the tools in the Arrange section. You can bring the Cameo forward or send it behind other objects , align it to the left, right, or center, or rotate it. On the far right, you can use the crop and size options.

Camera arrangement and size options

You can begin your presentation as you normally would by picking an option in the Start Slide Show section of the ribbon on the Slide Show tab.

How to Create Pro-level PowerPoint Videos with Audio

Jeong Lee headshot

Senior Marketing Manager at Loom

The power of a presentation lies in its ability to educate and inspire.

But why limit access to inspiring ideas because of the time slot in which they were presented? Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, and Keynote slides have become the go-to formats for delivering supporting content to help audiences from classrooms to boardrooms engage with ideas. But once the content is complete, what happens to it?

Getting used to the sound of your own voice can take some time, but the benefits of using Loom to record PowerPoint presentations are worth it.

Depending on the content and intended audience, a few will be published, stored, or made available on a marketplace. However, many will be lost, all your hard work never to be seen again. PowerPoint slides that aren't accompanied by a presentation are incomplete and don't do a sufficient job of expressing the author's ideas.

If you want to get ahead of the curve and preserve the integrity of your hard work, learn how to record a presentation by recording your screen .

Loom is one of the most popular choices for recording a video presentation—and for a good reason. The user interface is straightforward and easy to use. Mastering it requires little effort.

The benefits of presenting a PowerPoint in video

There are several reasons someone would want to learn how to record a PowerPoint presentation. Whether they’re explaining the quarterly statistics in a sales meeting , creating a webinar as a marketing tool , or recording training sessions for onboarding new hires, communicating ideas clearly and succinctly via video becomes more crucial every day.

With Loom, you can engage directly with your audience, allowing you to interact with a large group of people in a small, intimate environment. Let's look at some advantages of knowing how to record slide show presentations and the procedure for doing so.

Scheduled attendance is not guaranteed

Unless your presentation is a mandatory work meeting or you're teaching a paid course, many individuals will drop out before or during the presentation. However, by providing a presentation recording for them, you can still interact with those people, and they’ll feel supported by your accessibility.

Provides on-demand access to your presentation

Using Loom's video recording capabilities, you provide access to your material long after you've presented it. Giving your audience access to resources is one of the best ways to build trust and support.

Enhances your search engine optimization (SEO)

If you don't want to make your recorded presentations available on-demand but want to reap the benefits of SEO-driven traffic, you may post all or part of it on YouTube as a free resource in the future to attract new prospects.

Practice makes perfect

Another reason to learn how to record a presentation is that you can review your work before showing it to a live audience. By recording yourself before a meeting or lecture, you can review the footage to ensure you cover every aspect of the topic, make improvements, and eliminate those pre-performance jitters.

Tips for video recording yourself presenting a PowerPoint

While technology and practice are your two best allies in confidently presenting PowerPoint video presentations, a few extra tips can make yours even more effective and professional. Consider following these best practices:

Choose the right equipment

Video communications technology has flourished in the last few years. There are more options than ever to record presentations and deliver them digitally to a worldwide audience. A tool like Loom makes it easy to record webcam videos, screen captures, and recorded narration quickly and easily. This lets you present your PowerPoint or any other content to a digital audience without extensive and time-consuming video editing.

Include direct-to-camera (DTC) content

Personalization is the heart of every good video—nothing builds a personalized experience like a friendly face. Use a simultaneous webcam and screen capture to record yourself explaining the slides and information on the screen. Adding picture-in-picture DTC elements creates rapport and trust with your audience and ensures they stay engaged with your presentation.

Slide text: Less is more

Text is great for outlining the major themes of a presentation and adding context to discussions, but with a PowerPoint presentation, treat text as the seasoning in a recipe. Use what you need to enhance the experience, but don’t overwhelm.

Build your slides as an outline for each discussion topic and a home for visual elements like charts, infographics, and embedded video clips. But you, as the presenter, should do most of the talking. Building your presentation this way keeps viewers focused and engaged instead of hurrying to keep up with the reading.

Structure your presentation

Well-structured content is vital to the flow and digestibility of your presentation. When building your slides and video script, organize your information similarly to a blog post or an ebook. Start with an introduction to share your personal info and a general topical overview. Create segments that logically lay out each point or step in the process. Wrap things up with a conclusion and (if needed) a call to action that invites the viewer to take the next step—booking a call, downloading a resource, or signing up for a service.

Keep videos concise and skimmable

Digital fatigue is real. With so many videos and messages competing for our attention, creating a streamlined presentation results in longer view duration . The average view duration of a YouTube video may be as short as 40 seconds, with the median watch time averaging just over a minute and a half .

Another trick to increase viewability is to make it easy for viewers to skim. A well-structured presentation offers natural segments to help viewers zero in on the information they need. YouTube offers a Chapters feature that lets you insert a linkable outline so viewers can easily skip to specific timestamps.

Basic recording in PowerPoint

Microsoft offers basic tools to start recording your PowerPoint presentation. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to recording a simple presentation:

Step 1: From PowerPoint, open the slide with which you want to start your presentation.

Step 2: Select Record from the upper right hand corner of the PowerPoint window.

Step 3: Make sure your recording and voice settings are set properly, then click the round Record button. Begin your presentation.

Step 4: Click through your slide presentation and record your audio. Be sure to pause during slide transitions, as PowerPoint will not record audio during slide changes.

Step 5: Save your finished PowerPoint video to your local device and share it through email or upload it to sharing platforms like Vimeo, YouTube, etc.

An important note: PowerPoint’s native recording features offer some editing and highlight features. You’ll need a screen recorder app like Loom to film direct-to-camera or make substantial edits.

How to use Loom’s presentation recording software

It's simple to record yourself and your screen presentation side-by-side using only your laptop, a built-in camera, a mic, and Loom. Using Loom to record presentations on a computer is a fantastic way to save time and guarantee that your presentation goes precisely as planned. Loom's basic version is free to use and provides users with different options to meet their unique needs best. You may record the material on your screen and even take a video of yourself presenting alongside your screen capture.

Loom is available as a PC screen recorder , Mac screen recorder , iOS screen recorder , and Android screen recorder . The two primary methods are through the Desktop Client or the Chrome Screen Recorder . The desktop versions offer a higher recording resolution (4k compared to 1080p in the Chrome extension) and additional features like camera frames and backgrounds.

In either case, learning to record a presentation is simple with Loom’s easy-to-use presentation recorder. Here’s some information to help you get started.

You can create a Loom account using a variety of methods. Users may log in with their Google account information, or connect their Slack account information, email address, password, and name. You must first complete the registration process to have access to the program.

What is the Loom desktop client, and how can I use it?

Search for Loom in the Windows search box or click the red pinwheel Loom logo to launch the Loom Desktop Client. After you've opened it, choose the type of video recording you wish to make. Cam Only, Screen Only, and Screen + Cam are the three possibilities for the basic Loom version. As their names suggest, Cam Only and Screen Only allow you to record the material on your screen or yourself through a camera. Screen + Cam will enable you to make a presentation recording with both yourself and the information in real time, allowing others to watch your reactions to the material and connect with you as the presenter.

If you wish to record your screen, the presentation recorder has three options for defining the parameters of your video: Full Screen, Window, and Custom Size.

Full Screen captures everything on your monitor or display, allowing others to watch and follow along.

You may use the Window option to record a single computer application if you want to construct a more restricted lesson without interruptions.

Custom Size is exclusively available to Pro account holders, allowing users to build custom windows to capture particular areas of their screen.

To record your Loom videos, use the built-in webcam and microphone on your smartphone or computer or additional devices as needed. Loom recommends using high-quality microphones for better audio.

Using the Loom Google Chrome Extension to capture videos

First, download and install the Loom Google Chrome Extension from the Chrome Web Store. Then launch the extension's user interface by clicking on the red pinwheel Loom logo in the browser's top right corner. You can choose Cam Only, Screen Only, and Screen + Cam, the same as the desktop client. Unfortunately, users of the Google Chrome Extension can only record their entire screen or the contents of a single tab.

The Video Control menu differs from the desktop extension, appearing in the bottom left corner of the browser window. Users may only utilize three buttons: Start/End Recording, Pause Recording, and Delete Recording.

Using the Loom desktop client to record videos

Each option lets you use Loom's camera bubble , which allows you to see and record yourself as well as a video. There is no set limit on the duration of the video, but Loom will provide you alerts to ensure you don't keep recording by accident. Once you've decided on your selections, go to the four-button Video Control menu on the left side of your screen. To start your video, press the Recording button at the top of the menu. This button has two purposes: When the button is red, it indicates that you’re currently recording, and it stops the recording when clicked a second time.

The Pause button is located beneath the Recording button and is used to pause your video. However, depending on your computer, you may alternatively use Alt + Shift + P or Option + Shift + P . The Delete option is represented by a garbage can icon, which pauses the recording and completely deletes the video once you confirm your decision via a dialog box.

How to use the speaker notes feature

Loom makes presentations easier with speaker notes , an on-screen cue card feature visible only to you. Speaker notes are bullet points or full scripts written by you and activated during recording. These prompts allow you to deliver your message with confidence, without the need to remember your whole script or utilize physical note cards.

From the desktop app, open Loom and click Speaker Notes. Use the pop-up window to type in your notes, then resize the notes window to suit your needs before recording. Speaker notes are always presented on top, so there’s no need to switch windows during your presentation.

How AI-generated chapters work

Want your viewers to be able to skip to the most useful portion of a presentation? The AI-generated chapter feature allows viewers to select important topics within your presentation and navigate to them easily. These time-stamped chapters also allow users to link and respond to content.

How to use the drawing tool

Finally, the drawing tool , symbolized by a pen icon and available with the Pro subscription, can assist you in focusing on certain facts and numbers. Using this button, which includes picking a preset color, lets you make graphics that will draw your viewer's attention to key information.

Preserve your ideas with Loom’s Presentation Recorder

If you’re just starting out, learning to record a presentation with Loom is an excellent tool for creating quality content. As the world continues to move towards remote work environments, the ability to give an online presentation (and record it for posterity) becomes more essential every day.

Loom is free, so don’t wait to see how you can enhance your video presentation with video capture software.

Recording a PowerPoint Presentation, the FAQs

Subscribe to techsmith’s newsletter.

Everyone has, at some point, put a load of time and effort into creating the perfect PowerPoint presentation, only to use it once or twice. But isn’t it a shame for all that hard work to be discarded so quickly? Is every slide deck destined for deletion after just a couple of uses?

Isn’t there a better way to make the most out of your presentations? Well, yes. Yes, there is.

Rather than simply creating and presenting your work once or twice, recording your presentations can give them a new lease of life. Whether it’s a data report or a self-recorded PowerPoint, you can record a presentation in real-time, or in advance to make it available on-demand.

In this guide, we’ll explore two distinct ways of recording your presentation. First, we’ll discuss how to record a presentation from PowerPoint with audio and webcam, and then we’ll look at how to turn your .ppt slides into a video.

Benefits of Recording a Presentation

As well as there being many different ways to record a presentation, there are also many benefits of recording them. So, before we show you the ‘how,’ let’s talk about the ‘why.’

  • Encouraging asynchronous communication : One key benefit is fostering asynchronous communication . By recording presentations, you’re letting your audience engage with the content in their own time, breaking the constraints of time zones and scheduling conflicts. This also ensures your viewers can absorb information at their own pace, and revisit it as needed.
  • Boosting SEO : You can use your presentation to create a YouTube video and share it on your website to increase your online visibility and attract prospective customers. This can be a great way to expand your audience, increase web traffic, and establish yourself as an expert in your field.
  • Perfecting your presentation : Whether it’s in-person or over Zoom, you don’t get second chances with live presentations. However, a pre-recorded keynote lets you perfect the content and the narration before anyone sees it. This is a great way to combat stage fright while honing your presentation skills and building confidence.

With this in mind, turning your slides into a video is a no-brainer. It’s an easy way to grow your audience and make the information you’re sharing more accessible and easier to digest.

Record your screen and camera with Snagit for quick updates and feedback.

Depending on your audience and the type of presentation you need to deliver, TechSmith’s Snagit could just be the perfect tool for recording your PowerPoint. With its user-friendly interface and advanced features, Snagit is ideal for capturing top-notch presentation videos, in just a few clicks.

Now, there’s no denying that presentations are better when you can see the presenter… Fortunately, Snagit lets you capture your screen and webcam at the same time to create a Picture-in-Picture video.

In this section, we’ll guide you through the steps to record your presentation and webcam with Snagit.

Step 1: Open video capture

First, open Snagit and navigate to the Capture window. Select the Video tab, and start by clicking the big red Capture button.

Step 2: Select a recording area

Next, you’ll be prompted to choose which parts of your screen you want to record. Use Snagit’s orange crosshairs to select a specific region, window, or your entire screen.

Step 3: Configure recording settings

With the Video Recording toolbar, you can set options like Cursor Capture and Effects, System Audio, and Webcam.

If your webcam isn’t showing, click on the webcam icon. If you have an external webcam, select the one you want to use by clicking the dropdown arrow next to the webcam icon.

Step 4: Adjust your webcam

Next, adjust your webcam options to ensure your Picture-in-Picture recording looks how you want it. Here you can change the Picture-in-Picture placement as well as the shape and size of your webcam recording. You can even toggle between Picture-in-Picture and fullscreen webcam modes as you like.

The best part? You can make these adjustments even while recording.

Step 5: Manage recording

When you’re ready to roll, hit the Record button and click the Stop button when you’re finished. It’s that simple!

And remember, if there’s an interruption (like an unexpected visit from the mailman), just hit Pause. It’s okay to take a break — your video won’t be ruined by a little interruption.

Step 6: Edit your video

Once you’ve finished recording, Snagit will automatically open your video in the Snagit Editor, which is super easy to use. From here, you can make light edits to the footage as needed.

For example, if you need to cut or trim your footage , you can! Here’s how:

  • Set Start Point : Drag the Start handle (green) on the timeline to your desired starting point.
  • Set End Point : Similarly, drag the End handle (red) to where you want to end the cut.
  • Review the Segment : Before making any cuts, you can review the segment by dragging the Playhead (white) left and right across the timeline. This ensures you’re only cutting the footage you intend to.
  • Make the Cut : Once you’re satisfied with the selection, click the Cut button, which will pop up once you’ve made a selection.

And that’s all there is to it! If you want to go the extra mile, you can also use Snagit to save individual frames of your video as images , which can be used to create a thumbnail for your video .

Record your screen with Snagit

Snagit makes it easy to share quick updates and how-to’s by capturing exactly what’s happening on your screen.

Screen recording of a dashboard showing conversion rate, spend, and monthly performance with a picture-in-picture webcam view of a smiling man.

Now, Snagit is great for recording less formal videos in a flash, but if your presentation is intended for a particularly large or important audience, you might be looking to create something more polished. This is where TechSmith’s Camtasia comes in.

Camtasia is one of the smartest and most intuitive pieces of editing software out there, but it also makes for a pretty nifty screen recorder too. Camtasia is great for recording presentations when you need more control and editing powers over the final product.

But best of all, Camtasia streamlines the process by letting you record your presentation and voice over directly within PowerPoint.

Step 1: Set up your presentation video recording

If you’re a Windows user, you’ll have the option to include a PowerPoint Add-in Toolbar when you install Camtasia. While this feature isn’t currently available on MacOS, the Camtasia Add-in Toolbar allows you to start, stop, and control your recordings from within PowerPoint — so you don’t need to switch between applications.

Screenshot of how to record a powerpoint presentation with the Camtasia add-in toolbar

Just open the presentation you want to record and locate the Add-in toolbar under the Add-ins tab.

Don’t see the add-in toolbar? Go to File > Options > Add-ins, to enable it. Click on the Manage drop-down, select Disabled Items, then click Go. If the Camtasia Add-in is listed, select it, and click Enable.

If you’re an Apple user, don’t panic! You can still record your screen (with audio) on a Mac using Camtasia, and it’s just as easy. Alternatively, you can skip ahead to the next section and import your slides directly into Camtasia.

Step 2: Customize your recording options

Now let’s walk through each of the options on the toolbar before we begin recording.

Screenshot of the Camtasia add-in toolbar to record powerpoint

Record audio

The microphone button controls whether or not audio is recorded as part of your presentation. When you enable it, you’ll be able to record your narration using a microphone.

If you are planning to record audio, this is where you’ll select your microphone. If you want to record great audio , we suggest using an external microphone, rather than the one that’s built into your laptop.

Some of the best microphones for recording video are likely to be less expensive than you think. But, if you’re on a shoestring budget, even the mic that’s built into your headphones could produce better audio than your laptop.

Once you’re set up, be sure to test the mic and adjust the volume slider as needed. You’ll also need to decide whether or not to record your system audio, which is any sound that comes out of your speakers, such as email notifications.

Record webcam

If you have a webcam, you can also record your camera during the presentation to create a Picture-in-Picture clip — just as you can with Snagit!

screenshot of adding webcam to a presentation recording

To customize even more of the recording settings, click the Recording Options button. Here you’ll find settings that let you record with a watermark and adjust your video frame rate . There are a few more options too, but the default settings should work just fine.

When you’re ready, click OK to close this window and save any changes made.

Step 3: Record your presentation

The final step is as simple as clicking the Record button in the toolbar. This will launch your slides into the Presentation Mode and start recording.

When you exit Presentation Mode or reach the end of your slideshow, you can either continue recording your screen, or stop recording and save your file. Pretty easy right?

Before you get started, let us show you another way to turn your presentation into a video, without recording your desktop .

Another way to create a video from your presentation is to import your PowerPoint slides into Camtasia. This way you can adjust how long each slide appears on screen, as well as add Behaviors and Annotations to personalize your presentation and highlight important information.

By importing your slides into Camtasia, and recording your voice over separately, you get a lot more flexibility with the editing process, which means you have more control over the finished article.

If you do decide to record your audio separately, you might want to take a look at TechSmith’s Audiate . This advanced audio recorder will transcribe your voice over in real-time and let you edit the audio file as if it were a text-based document. We don’t want to brag, but it’s probably the best way to add a voice over to a PowerPoint .

Regardless of how you decide to narrate your PowerPoint, here’s how to turn your presentation into a video:

1. Import your PowerPoint slides

First, start by importing your PowerPoint slides directly into Camtasia. Once your media is imported, you can edit it by dragging your slides into the Editing Toolbar.

screenshot of how to add powerpoint slides into camtasia

You can now add the images to the Timeline, and edit them like any other media in a Project.

screenshot of powerpoint slides in the camtasia media bin

If you drag your slides to the Timeline, the slides will be placed in the order of the presentation, each with a default 5-second duration.

screenshot of powerpoint slides in the camtasia timline

With your presentation on the timeline, use Ripple Move to create space in between slides to adjust the timing of each one. To do this, hold shift, then click and drag.

screenshot of how to adjust the timing of powerpoint slides in the camtasia timeline

Once you’ve imported your slides and adjusted the duration of each one to correlate with your voice over, it’s time to start editing.

How to edit a presentation video (in Camtasia)

Add behaviors.

Firstly, add some visual interest with Camtasia Behaviors . A Behavior is an animation that brings movement to your slides, making them stand out on screen. This is a great way to bring parts of your presentation to life and take it from ordinary to extraordinary — because nobody likes a boring presentation .

To add a Behavior, click and drag the Behavior you wish to use onto the slide you want to animate. Once added, you can adjust the Behavior using the Properties tab.

Add annotations

Another good way to grab and direct your audience’s attention is to add some Annotations, which are great for highlighting important information.

To insert an Annotation, click the Annotation tab on the left side of the screen and drag it into the designated slide. You can then re-position and edit the Annotation in the Properties tab as needed.

Absolutely! Both Snagit and Camtasia are excellent choices for recording a professional and polished presentation. Snagit is perfect for no-fuss recording and editing. If you require more sophisticated editing capabilities, Camtasia is the ideal choice, offering the added convenience of recording your slideshow and voice over directly within PowerPoint.

Click the Record button in the toolbar to launch your slides into the Presentation Mode and start recording. When you exit Presentation Mode or reach the end of your slideshow, you can either continue recording your screen or stop and save your file.

If you’re planning to record audio, select your microphone in the recording options. The microphone button controls whether or not audio is recorded as part of your presentation. If you have a webcam attached to your computer, you can also record your camera to create a Picture-in-Picture clip, perfect for showing the presenter during the presentation.

With Snagit, you can conveniently record your voice over as you go through your presentation, capturing both the audio and visuals in one go. If you’re looking for more advanced recording and editing options, you might also consider using Camtasia, which allows you to record your voice over while presenting. For even more control, use Audiate to record your audio separately and then import it into Camtasia for fine-tuning.

FAQs about the best webcams

The best webcams for 2024

A good webcam should meet the following requirements:

High resolution and frame rate

720p video resolution is acceptable for most basic web calls.

But you may want higher quality if you’re a streamer or podcaster. In this case, aim for 1080p or even 4K resolution.

This also makes resizing your videos easier without losing quality.

Frame rate measures how many image stills show per second of a video. We measure this in frames per second (fps). A higher frame rate makes for a smoother video with less blur and jitter.

For most people, 30 fps will do. However, gamers and streamers may want 60 or even 90 fps to better adapt to fast movements.

Note: Software like Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet restrict broadcast quality to a max of 1080p and 30 fps to preserve bandwidth. If that’s all you’re using your webcam for, there’s really no need to pay for anything above that.

The above would do for a casual video call. But if you’re a streamer or creator, choose a dedicated, high-quality platform like Riverside.

Light, color correction, and focus

Light, color, and focus are adjustable on many webcams. But, the best webcams produce a realistic image without adjustments.

Look for cameras with good autofocus and a crisp image with realistic coloring.

Mounting options

A proper clip or stand ensures you stay centered in the frame and the picture is straight.

It’ll also ensure your webcam doesn’t slide off your monitor!

Give bonus points to adjustable clips or stands that account for different desk setups.

Field of view

Depending on what you’re using your webcam for, you’ll want to consider the field of view (FOV). FOV refers to how much of your surroundings the camera shows.

A narrow field of view puts the focus more on you, and is best for personal calls.

Meanwhile, a wide field of view captures 90 degrees or more. This is better for group calls or wider scenes.

Built-in microphone

Most modern webcams have a built-in microphone.

Some higher-end webcams even have stereo microphones with noise reduction and directional capabilities.

Even so, we suggest getting a dedicated computer microphone if you're a professional streamer or podcaster.

Privacy cover

Covering the lens of your webcam can protect you from hackers or spying.

It can also just save you the embarrassment of accidentally turning on your webcam before you’re ready.

It’s not an essential feature for everyone, but it’s nice to have.

Best 4K webcams

Insta360 link.

Price : $299 Resolution : Up to 4K Frame rate : up to 60 fps Field of view : 79.5

Even among other 4K webcams, the Insta360 Link stands out for its superb image quality. Shoot in up to 4K with a frame rate of up to 30 fps. And you can get as high as 60 fps if you shoot at 1080p.

It’s best for video with a lot of movement thanks to its AI tracking feature. This automatically tracks your movements and ensures you stay in focus and in frame.

Expect detailed images with excellent color, even in low-light conditions. The webcam has automatic light and color correction. But you can also adjust these settings in the Insta350 Link Controller app.

The Insta360 is quick to set up with its plug-and-play functionality. Its integrated clip makes it easy to attach to both monitors and laptop screens. It’s also tripod-compatible.

Insta360 Link comes equipped with a microphone I’d describe as “adequate.” But it doesn’t match the high standards of its video quality, so you may want to opt for a dedicated mic.

The Insta360 Link doesn’t have a privacy cover. Although it automatically points down when not in use to prevent capturing unwanted footage.

Insta 360 best 4K webcam

Key features :

  • HDR mode : Balance your highlights and shadows so no lighting overblows your video.
  • Gesture control : Control your camera handsfree by using gestures to get it to zoom in or out or switch modes.
  • Multiple viewing modes : Set yourself up for the best focus and shot by adjusting for overhead shots, whiteboard mode, or portrait mode for vertical video.

Best for : People with diverse types of production.

Logitech Brio 4K

Price : ~$199 Resolution : Up to 4K Frame rate : up to 90 fps Field of view : 65, 78, and 90 degrees

The Logitech Brio 4K has won over a lot of reviewers. This premium webcam can shoot in up to 4K with a frame rate of 30 fps. At 720p resolution, it can manage a frame rate of up to 90 fps.

It creates clear, detailed videos with accurate color. To maintain optimal image quality, it adjusts to lighting changes.  Its low-light performance is also top-notch.

You can also switch between three alternative field-of-view angles.

The Logitech Brio 4K is plug-and-play and comes with its own software for adjusting settings.

You’ll also have a built-in, adjustable clip for mounting. It is also compatible with most tripods.

The dual, noise-canceling microphones in the Logitech Brio aren’t bad. But, the sound sometimes sounds processed in noisy environments. Even so, most users will find them adequate.

Lastly, this camera has a privacy cover you can toggle on or off.

Logitech Brio 4K

  • Adjustable field of view : Choose between 3 options: 65 degrees, 78 degrees, and 90 degrees.
  • Automatic exposure and contrast : Automatically adjusts for challenging lighting conditions to provide clear video.
  • Logitech software suite : Get access to additional features and adjustments, including custom profiles and advanced settings just for gamers and streamers.

Best for : Gamers. The high frame rate makes this one especially good for fast-moving videos.

Note: If you're using a Logitech with Riverside, please check our guidelines first.

Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra

Price : $299.99 Resolution : Up to 4K Frame rate : Up to 60 fps Field of view : 72 - 82 degrees

The Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra provides exceptional video quality and color accuracy, even in low-light conditions. The camera maintains focus, even when lighting suddenly changes.

I liked how it could produce a natural background blur with high-speed movement. All without post-editing.

This webcam works well right out of the box. You can use the clamp-style mount to attach it to your desktop or laptop. It’s tripod-compatible as well.

The webcam’s Razer Synapse software is hit-and-miss. The interface can be a bit glitchy. And results were inconsistent when setting maximum resolution.

The Razer Kiyo Pro’s microphone captures clear sound and reduces background noise. It’s fine for audio calls but may not be adequate for professional streaming or content creation.

As for privacy, you can close the Razer Kiyo Pro’s cover just by twisting the lens (with a satisfying click!)

Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra

  • Large sensor : Enjoy better visuals, detail, and blur. The sensor is about 4 times the size of sensors on most other webcams.
  • Adjustable field of view : Choose between 72 and 82 degrees to accommodate different setups.
  • Manual controls : Adjust shutter speed, light balance, contrast, and saturation via the Razer Synapse software.

Best for : Content creators and streamers, thanks to its high-quality recordings and adjustable settings and FOV.

Logitech C270

Price : $20-$30 Resolution : 720p Frame rate : 30 fps Field of view : 60 degrees

If you’re looking for a basic webcam at a budget-friendly price, the Logitech C270 may be your match.

For basic video calls and occasional use, it delivers clear 720p video. Its automatic light correction feature is also surprisingly good, which helps maintain quality in low-light conditions.

As a plug-and-play device, the C270 was easy to set up and use. Just plug in the USB, and you should be on your way. This webcam attaches to your computer with an adjustable clip. But it works better on thicker monitors than on a laptop. It can be adjusted. But, it can’t be rotated horizontally.

The C270’s microphone is basic as well. It performs adequately in quiet environments, but it’s not great in noisy environments.

This webcam does not have a privacy cover. You’d have to buy one separately.

Logitech C270

  • Build quality : This webcam is compact, lightweight, and well-built, making it perfect for traveling.
  • Light and color correction : Automatically adjusts the image to improve visibility in low-light conditions.

Best for : Those who need a basic, inexpensive webcam and aren’t concerned about any bells and whistles.

Microsoft Modern Webcam

Price : $70 Resolution : 1080p Frame rate : 30 fps Field of view : 78 degrees

For HD video quality on a budget, consider the Microsoft Modern Webcam.

It shoots at 1080p and up to 30 fps. It works best in well-lit environments, but does a reasonable job with lower-light environments. It, handles bright conditions better than most cheaper webcams.

This plug-and-play device is designed for Windows and is certified for Microsoft Teams. But, it works with MacOS, Linux, and Chrome. To access all the customization options, Windows is best

The Microsoft Modern Webcam has what it calls a “universal mounting clip.” It isn’t bad, but it works best on flat-backed monitors and tends to lean forward when clipped to curved or irregular shapes. It can be tilted, but may lack the adjustability some users need.

This webcam also includes a basic microphone but even Microsoft does not recommend it for Teams-certified use. In other words, it doesn’t meet Microsoft’s standard for performance and compatibility with Microsoft Teams.

Finally, this webcam includes a simple, sliding cover for privacy.

Best budget webcam Microsoft Modern Webcam

  • Teams certified : Built to perform well with Microsoft Teams for reliable, professional use.
  • Light and color correction : Get automatic adjustment of light and exposure with the ability to customize settings like brightness, contrast, and saturation in the Microsoft Accessory Center app.

Best for : Video meetings and web conferences, especially in Microsoft Teams

Price : $39.99-$49.99 Resolution : 1080p full HD Frame rate : 30 fps Field of view : 110 degrees

If you’re looking for a budget webcam that isn’t a big compromise, the Nexigo N60 could be the one.

This webcam shoots 1080p at 30 fps for crisp, smooth video streams. Its low-light correction system works well andprovides natural coloring.

This simple webcam is easy to use and set up, and requires no additional drivers. Its adjustable clip makes it easy enough to mount. Although,it may not have enough range of motion when used on thin bezels.

Nexigo N60 can also connect to standard tripods. But, I found  it was unstable on a small, light tripod, so it might need a sturdy one.As you might expect, the Nexigo N60’s built-in mic is just ok. It includes noise reduction and will work just fine for video calls. You’ll want a dedicated mic if taudio quality is important for you.

This webcam also includes a simple slide-over cover for privacy and security.

Nexigo best webcam on a budget

  • Fixed focus lens : Get consistent clarity without the need to refocus.
  • Wide field of view : A particularly wide field of view makes this a great choice for group video calls, content creators, and those whose content includes a full range of movement.

Best for : This is an excellent basic webcam for video calls. But, some people may not like the wider field of view here. This could also be a good entry-level cam for content creators.

Logitech Brio 500

Price : $129.99-$199.99 Resolution : 4K Ultra HD Frame rate : Up to 90 fps Field of view : 65, 78 or 90 degrees

The Logitech Brio 500 is a high-end webcam that’s gotten much praise.

It isn’t hard to see why. The camera has amazing 4K video resolution and supports a frame rate of up to 90 fps when shooting at 720p. And its advanced light correction technology ensures you’ll look your best in just about any lighting condition.

The webcam’s Logi Tune software gives you flexibility. You can adjust features such as zooming, field of view, and color correction.

Unlike most other webcams, the Brio’s adjustable clip actually rotates 360 degrees horizontally. This makes adjusting the camera angle much easier than on other models.

As a higher-end webcam, the Logitech Brio 500 actually has a very good microphone. It includes noise cancellation, and I found that it delivered crisp audio in most conditions.

The Logitech Brio 500 comes with a slide-over privacy cover.

Overall, the camera is well designed and more aestheticthan most.

Logitech Brio 500

  • AI-powered features : Autoframing will help keep you in the frame, while options for background replacement can help provide the perfect blur.
  • Adjustable field of view : Set your FOV to 65, 78, or 90 depending on your needs.

Best for : Anyone who’s looking for a top-quality choice that won’t disappoint on any front.

Logitech C310

Price : $25-$50 Resolution: 720p Frame rate : 30 fps Field of view : 60 degrees

If all you need is decent resolution for video calls, the Logitech C310 might do the trick. It’s a good budget webcam that shoots in 720p and 30 fps, providing adequate quality for video calls.

The video quality is also sharp for this resolution. The color is decent, but not nearly as vibrant as it is with the Logitech Brio 500. I found this camera was lacking in lower lighting conditions, though, as the picture tended to get grainy.

The C310 is easy to use. Because of its limited functionality, even those who are not tech-savvy shouldn’t struggle too much here. You can also use the software to customize basic effects and filters and enhance video quality.

The C310’s adjustable mounting clip is fine. It may slip on thinner or irregularly shaped monitors, and it could have better adjustability.

As for the Logitech C301’s mic, it’ll do. It has noise filtering, but it doesn’t work well in noisy environments. But for video calls in a quiet home office, it should do the trick. As a budget webcam, one thing this model lacks is a privacy cover..

Logitech C310

  • Sturdy build and design : Enjoy long-term use thanks to durable, quality build.
  • Logitech webcam software : Enjoy additional features such as video capture, photo capture, and motion detection.

Best for : Basic video calls on a budget.

Lumina 4K Webcam

Price : $199-$250 Resolution : 4K Ultra HD Frame rate : Up to 90 fps Field of view : 65 to 95 degrees

If you’re looking for the highest quality audio and video, plus some AI-powered features, the Lumina 4K Webcam is a standout.

You can shoot in up to 4K Ultra HD and up to 90 fps at 720p. This provides you with a range of options for different types of video content.

AI features such as auto zoom, background blur, and automatic color correction ensure the best picture in all lighting conditions.

This webcam is easy to set up, and customizable through the Lumina Studio App. Note, however, that while the software works well, it may not be compatible with macOS apps such as FaceTime and Safari.

This camera also has a better clip than most. It holds tight even on thinner or unevenly shaped monitors. The Lumina 4K is also tripod-compatible.

Lumina’s dual noise-canceling microphones provide reasonable audio quality. If you’re a new podcast this may be enough. But we’d always suggest a dedicated microphone instead.

This webcam has a detachable, magnetic privacy cover. It’s sleek, and it works well, but I’d be a little concerned about losing it on my messy desk!

Lumina 4K webcam

  • AI-powered features : Keep the focus on you with autoframing and smooth background blur.
  • HDR support : Enjoy better exposure and contrast, especially in mixed lighting conditions.

Best for : Podcasters looking for an all-in-one solution for excellent video, clear audio, and ease of use.

Price : $99-$129.99 Resolution : 1080p Full HD Frame rate : Up to 60 fps Field of view : 81.6 degrees

If lighting is a concern for you, the Razer Kiyo stands out for its built-in ring light. It’ll ensure you look great even in low-light conditions, as will the 1080p resolution you can shoot in. This webcam can also shoot at 720p at up to 60 fps for faster-moving scenes, providing good versatility.

The Razer Kiyo is hassle-free and easy to use, and it’s nice that it can remove the need for additional lighting. You can even adjust the light levels with a dial on the front of the webcam.

The Razer Synapse software is pretty intuitive for adjusting settings. This webcam also clips securely to most monitors and works well on a tripod.

The Razer’s microphone is fine for video calls, but it tends to pick up more background noise than most. Serious podcasters will want a dedicated mic, for sure.

One thing the Kiyo Razer lacks is a privacy cover.

Razer Kiyo webcam for podcasting

  • Light and color correction : Get your lighting on point with an adjustable ring light and automatic low light correction.
  • High frame rate options : If you’re into streaming and gaming, the 60 fps frame rate will ensure smooth, jitter-free video.

Best for : This is a solid mid-price pick for many podcasters as it provides excellent video quality and great lighting at a reasonable price.

Even with a good-quality webcam in place, there are other steps you can take to ensure the highest-quality video possible.

Software settings

Adjust the resolution settings in your video conferencing software or streaming software to match the capabilities of your webcam. Most video conferencing software caps resolution at 720-1080p and a frame rate at 30 fps.

If top-quality video is most important to you, you can record in up to 4K on Riverside.

video presentation webcam

Good lighting

Good video is all about good video lighting .

Soft, even illumination enhances video quality and helps you look your best.

If you’re using natural light, position yourself in front of a window (so, facing the window) but not in direct sunlight.

Ring lights, softbox lights, or LED panels can also provide consistent light and eliminate shadows.

Background

The right kind of background can make or break your video.

Ensure that your background isn’t too bright, and consider wearing a contrasting color. This will prevent exposure issues that could make you look darker.

Internet connection

A stable, high-speed internet connection is important, especially if you want to stream high-quality video. Use a wired ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi whenever possible.

Computer Hardware

Having adequately powerful computer hardware ensures smooth performance and high-quality recordings. You’ll need a newer computer, at least 8GB of RAM memory, and a dedicated graphics card.

Choosing a webcam is a big decision, but the right webcam can make all the difference in content quality.

Once you’ve started recording, be sure to set up your Riverside Studio to get access to a full suite of editing tools and other features to make the best video possible.

Still looking for information about webcams? Here are our answers to some frequently asked questions.

What are the best webcams for mac?

Most modern webcams are plug-and-play. That means they don’t require additional software, and should work well on both Windows and macOS.

That said, macOS users do face some additional challenges that can mean that specific webcams might not work well for them. These include the use of proprietary drivers that are only available on Windows, or firmware updates that are only available on Windows.

Always check the manufacturer’s website to determine compatibility. Read reviews to check for any known issues with the webcams you’re considering.

Also note that webcams labeled as “plug-and-play” are more likely to work well across different operating systems. This is because they don’t require additional software drivers.

What are the best webcams for Windows?

Most webcams work with Windows. Plug-and-play options should connect and automatically install drivers without the need for additional software.

Webcams for lesser-known or niche brands are more likely to have compatibility issues. In addition, older model webcams may not have drivers that are compatible with the latest versions of Windows.

Overall, it’s best to check the manufacturer’s website and read reviews to ensure that any webcam you choose is compatible with your system.

Microsoft also makes its own line of webcams specifically designed with Windows in mind.

What is good webcam video quality?

What’s considered “good” webcam video quality really depends on what you’re planning to do.

For video conference calls, look for at least 720p (ideally 1080p) and 30 fps.

For professional content creation, consider 4K video. A 30 fps frame rate should be fine here as well unless. If you’re streaming video games or other fast-moving content, consider 60 fps for a smoother, more natural video.

What webcam do YouTubers use?

The Logitech StreamCam is often cited as a top choice for YouTubers thanks to its high resolution, frame rate, and its integration with streaming software. It’s also relatively affordable!

You can read more about this camera in our list of the best webcams for streaming .

Can I use my iPhone as a webcam?

Yes, you can use your iPhone as a webcam . You can do this using iPhone’s built-in Continuity Camera feature. You can also use external software like Riverside to turn your phone into a webcam . This will allow you to record at the highest quality.

How do I get the best lighting for my webcam?

There’s a lot to consider when it comes to video lighting. In general, look for soft, even illumination, and avoid backlighting.

You can also try a three-point lighting setup , with a light to highlight your face, one to reduce shadows, and a backlight to separate you from the background.

Logitech StreamCam against a white background

The best business webcam for content creation

2. logitech streamcam.

Our expert review:

The Logitech StreamCam is a brilliant business webcam. While it's not primarily designed for business use (it is more for content creators like YouTube streamers), the fact that it offers excellent features like auto-focusing, smart exposure, facial tracking, up to 60fps frame rate, and a flippable design, means it is a great choice for professionals anyway.

It's also 1080p, so you get a clearer picture than 720p cameras, and it connects via USB Type-C, so there are faster, more stable, video transfer speeds as well.

The video output is at 60 fps and you will notice how much smoother it looks compared to typical 30 fps webcams. But keep in mind that not all conferencing software (including Google Meet) have the capability to display videos at 60 fps.

Logitech C922 Pro Stream against a white background

The best low-light business webcam

3. logitech c922 pro stream.

The Logitech C922 Pro Stream features the same classy design as its predecessor, the C920, but also has some key upgrades. For a start, the C922 boasts excellent 1080p video quality, which is great for hosting video calls, and its automatic low-light correction makes it a fantastic cam for streaming with the lights off.

Although it offers 60 fps recording, it's only at 720p resolution. It supports background removal, which is helpful if you're taking part in a virtual meeting and you don't want people to see what's in the background (a blessing for people working from home while their kids are off school!).

The webcam also has two omni-directional microphones for stereo audio that capture audio from many angles to create a clear and natural sound.

Should you buy the Logitech C922 Pro Stream?

Logitech Brio Webcam against a white background

The best business webcam for streaming

4. logitech brio webcam.

If you want to really impress your co-workers and clients, then the Logitech Brio might be the webcam you’ve been looking for. With a 4K UHD resolution and HDR , the Logitech Brio has brought high fidelity to the world of the best business webcams. This means you can stream in crystal clear ultra high definition.

At 4K resolution, the webcam offers 30 fps, but you can move it up to 60 fps by lowering the resolution to 1080p. Want even smoother recording? Reduce the resolution to 720p and you can enjoy a framerate of 90 fps.

If you need to show off products on the stream, where broadcasting every detail is important, then this is a great choice. If that wasn’t enough, it also boasts Windows Hello functionality, allowing you to securely log into your PC just by looking at the camera.

The best business webcam: How to choose

When searching for the best business webcams, one of the first things you'll want to look out for is the resolution. If you plan to stream high-quality video with clear details, then a high resolution camera is a must (1080p or 4K).

You'll want to consider the webcam's overall image quality, low-light performance, color and HDR functionality, and AI features (like auto-framing or facial tracking).

Check what type of connectivity options the webcam offers (USB Type-C offers faster video transfer speeds) and the quality of the microphone.

It'll also help if the webcam has background removal features, and Windows Hello functionality for swift logging in.

The best business webcams: How we test

We've tested the best business webcams on standard specs, like the resolution, framerate, connectivity options, and pricing.

We evaluated the video quality based on how clear and vibrant it looked in bright light, regular light, and low light conditions. We checked what type of AI features they had, like facial tracking, auto-focusing, auto-framing, and auto light correction.

The microphone quality is essential in webcams, so we assessed that and tested the quality of the HDR option where relevant. We also considered whether they had background removal capabilities and adjustable resolution and framerate.

'It came at me like it was going to kill me': Bodycam video shows officer shooting dog

by Michael Howell

Image from body camera video showing the moment a Davenport Police Officer shot and killed a dog (Courtesy: Davenport PD)

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Newly released body camera video shows the moment a Davenport Police officer shot and killed a dog while on duty.

The Davenport Police Department cleared the officer of any wrong doing Wednesday.

"Based on a review of the facts, the officer’s actions were deemed lawful," a press release from the department reads.

The video shows the dog rushing up to the police officer once he steps out of the car. The dog barks and lunges towards the officer a few times but does not appear to make contact or bite the officer.

In a matter of seconds after the dog is in front of the officer barking, the officer pulls out his gun and shoots at the dog multiple times. The dog goes back towards the house, whimpers and dies. The shooting happened in front of a woman and two children.

****WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT****

The shooting happened on Aug. 21, 2024, at 7:20 p.m. The officer was first responding to a report of four aggressive dogs at-large in the 800 block of North Pine Street. The caller said they were trying to get over the fence and reach their dog. The shooting happened a few blocks east at 2100 Telegraph Road.

In a report included in Davenport PD's press release, the officer said he feared for his life.

The dog charged me at full speed, barking aggressively at me. I overheard the adult woman say “oh no”. I began to back up, holding my left hand out in hopes the dog would catch my scent and back away from me. The pitch of the dog’s bark changed to a threatening bark.
The dog continued barking at me, baring its teeth at me. I observed the dog to be salivating from the mouth. The dog lunged at me multiple times, snapping its teeth at me in an attempt to bite me. I dodged the dog multiple times as it lunged at me while snapping his teeth.
This put me in fear of being seriously injured. I drew my service handgun and continued to back up. The dog lunged at me as I was backing up, trying to bite me. I discharged my firearm twice, striking the dog.

The dog's owner, Don Hesseltine, posted on social media saying police murdered his dog, all in front of his wife, his child, and his nephew.

The City of Davenport released the following statement.

How to use Microsoft PowerPoint

How to use Microsoft PowerPoint on a monitor.

Creating a successful slideshow is no small task. So, if you’re new to Microsoft PowerPoint, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the features and tools you need to build a presentation.

How to create a slideshow

How to add a slide, how to insert slide elements, how to use different views, how to add speaker notes, how to start and end a presentation.

We’ll guide you through the process of creating a PowerPoint slideshow by adding slides and elements as well as how to present the show when you finish. These basics are just what you need as a beginner and should get you off to a terrific start with PowerPoint.

Note : The information in this tutorial applies to PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Windows. While you may see variations in features or menus, most PowerPoint versions have the same basic options.

When you open the application, you can create a new blank slideshow or use a built-in PowerPoint template . To best familiarize yourself with the application and the items we’ll walk through here, select a Blank slideshow on the Home screen and follow along.

Next, you’ll want to name and save your presentation file. Select File > Save or Save As name the file on the right, choose a location for it, and select Save .

Be sure to continue saving your slideshow regularly as you work on it by selecting Save in the Quick Access Toolbar.

A Blank presentation in PowerPoint starts you off with a main slide. You’ll notice a text box at the top for the title and one beneath for the subtitle. Simply click inside these boxes to enter your text.

While it’s good to get in the habit of using title slides like these to begin future presentations, you’ll also need to know how to insert the additional slides.

Go to either the Home or Insert tab and open the New Slide menu in the ribbon.

Choose the layout you want to use for the new slide. You’ll see several options that include placeholders, which is handy for popping in what you need like text, lists, or images.

Once the slide appears, click inside a placeholder to add the necessary elements.

Continue to insert as many slides as you want the same way.

Along with using the placeholders on the slides, you can add your own items. This is helpful if a slide doesn’t contain the number or type of placeholders you need.

Add a text box

One popular slide element to add is a text box, which is just like the title and subtitle boxes on the title slide. With it, you can insert and format text as you wish.

Go to the Insert tab and select Text box in the Text group.

You can use your cursor to draw the size of the box you want or simply click the slide and begin typing inside the box.

To format the text in the box, select it and go to the Home tab. Use the options in the Font section of the ribbon to adjust the style, size, color, or emphasis.

Specific to PowerPoint on Windows, you’ll also see a floating toolbar appear near the text that you select. This toolbar contains the same features as on the Home tab along with additional options.

Add images, shapes, and icons

Because a slideshow is a visual tool, you’ll likely want to add photos, illustrations, shapes, or icons to slides.

Go to the Insert tab and open the Pictures , Shapes , or Icons menu.

  • Pictures : Pick an image from your device, one of the stock images, or an online picture and select Insert .
  • Shapes : Pick a shape from the menu and use your cursor to draw it on the slide.
  • Icons : Search or use the categories to find the icon, select it, and click Insert .

Once you insert one of the above on your slide, you’ll see the corresponding tab appear to format the object. For pictures, you have a Picture Format tab, for shapes, you have a Shape Format tab, and for icons, you have a Graphics Format tab.

You can use the tools in the ribbon to do things like change the color, add a border, align or rotate the object, and resize it.

Add audio or video

Another useful object to add to your slides is an audio file or video. You can then play the sound or video clip during your presentation.

Go to the Insert tab and open the Audio or Video menu.

  • Audio : Pick an audio file on your device or record audio on the spot.
  • Video : Pick a video from your device, one of the stock videos, or an online video and select Insert .

Like with images and shapes, you’ll see tabs appear to format the file you insert. For audio, you have an Audio Format tab, for video, you have a Video Format tab, and for both types of files, you have a Playback tab.

Use the Format tabs to adjust the color, add a border, or apply an effect and the Playback tab to set a fade in or out effect, loop the playback, or play it in the background.

You can take advantage of different views in PowerPoint for accomplishing various tasks. This is helpful for seeing all of your slides in a grid, viewing a notes page, or working with an outline.

Go to the View tab and you’ll see the options in the Presentation Views group.

  • Normal : Use this to create and edit your slides.
  • Outline View : Use this to work with an outline of your presentation. Each slide is numbered with a hierarchy of slide elements.
  • Slide Sorter : Use this to see your slides in a grid format for an overall slideshow view.
  • Notes Page : Use this to view your presentation with notes if you decide to print it .
  • Reading View : Use this to play your slideshow in the same window without entering full-screen mode.

Use the tools in the Show section of the View tab to display a Ruler , Gridlines , or Guides . These items can help you line up your slide elements.

You can also select the Zoom and Fit to Window options in the Zoom section of the ribbon to get a better view of slide items or the overall slide.

Presenting a slideshow is similar to giving a speech where you may want to use speaker notes. Like note cards, you can add notes to each slide in your presentation. When you present the slideshow, only you can view your notes; your audience cannot see them.

Select Notes in the Status Bar at the bottom of the PowerPoint window or go to View > Notes .

Add your notes in the section that appears below the slide.

You can use the options in the Font section of the Home tab to add emphasis or create a list.

For more detail, check out our how-to for adding notes in PowerPoint .

When you’re ready to present your PowerPoint slideshow or to see it as your audience will, you can start the presentation anytime.

Go to the Slide Show tab.

To display your speaker notes and a dashboard of controls while you present, check the box for Use Presenter View in the Monitors section. Then, select the monitors for the slideshow display and presenter view using the Monitor drop-down menu.

On the left side of the ribbon, pick From Beginning or From Current Slide per your preference.

When the slideshow starts, you’ll see what your audience sees on one monitor with Presenter View on the other. This is a super helpful way to present your slideshow because the Presenter View window provides you with controls.

If you’re unable to use more than one monitor, you’ll also see controls on the bottom left of the slides.

In the Presenter View window, you’ll see the current slide on the left with the controls beneath and the next slide on the right along with your speaker notes.

To use a control, hover your cursor over each button for a brief description.

From left to right, you can choose a laser pointer or pen, see all slides in a grid, zoom in on the slide, display a black screen, turn the subtitles or camera on or off, and view additional options like changing the subtitle settings or ending the presentation.

To stop presentation mode, press your Esc key, select End Slide Show at the top, or use the three dots to choose End Show .

While this beginner’s guide to using PowerPoint should get you off to a great start creating and presenting your first slideshow, there’s plenty more to learn. Check out how to use Presenter Coach for rehearsing your presentation and best practices for making awesome PowerPoint slides for tips and suggestions.

Microsoft hasn't been shy about pushing first-party services and apps in Windows, but this time, it's getting a little ridiculous. As reported by Windows Latest, the Microsoft application PC Manager claims you can "fix" your computer simply by changing Bing to be the default search engine.

The change was spotted when using the Edge browser and having, for example, Google as the default search engine. After you run a health check, one of the suggested changes will be to set Bing as your default search engine. If that's how you want to go, there's a button to make it happen.

In its Annual Work Trend Index, Microsoft has, unsurprisingly, published some fresh data around AI in the workplace. The big stat is that according to its survey, 75% of "knowledge workers" are already using generative AI at work, with that number doubling in the last six months alone.

The survey defines "knowledge workers" as "those who typically work at a desk (whether in an office or at home)," which is a pretty broad demographic.

Microsoft Teams was introduced in 2017 as a unified communication and collaboration platform aimed at helping businesses and organizations get things done. Microsoft leveraged the company's existing Office software experience and created a unified experience between Teams, Office 365, and Skype for Business. However, as with all software, things don't always go according to plan. Sometimes you can run into Teams problems.

We're big Teams users here at Digital Trends -- it's our go-to communication and meeting tool -- and we've come across a few issues ourselves over the years. In the event you're having Microsoft Teams issues, here's how to fix some of the most common problems.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.
