How to Write a Cover Letter to a Company That Does Not Have a Job Opening
Just because a company does not have a published job opening, don't let it dissuade you from job hunting. You may submit a letter at just the right time, or you could have skills that are so uniquely aligned with the business that they will want to find a place for you. As with any job-seeking process, your letter of introduction should be professional, succinct and persuasive.
Search the Company Website
Check out the company website and look for a tab called careers, job openings or employment. Even if you have been screened by the receptionist, there might be online job postings she isn't aware of. There is also the potential that you will come across an available position that is close to what you are looking for, which could give you a foot in the interview door. If you still don't find any openings, read through the company's "about us" page to learn more about its mission, products, services and internal structure. Search for the department you are most interested in. If there is a manager or director you can pinpoint, you will know who to send your letter of interest.

When a company does not have any advertised openings, draft your letter of interest using broad strokes. For example, if you are interested in the company's marketing department, don't limit yourself by saying, "I'm looking for a job as a senior public-relations specialist." Instead, focus on your unique skill set to pique their interest.
I am interested in joining your marketing department where my 10 years of marketing and advertising agency experience will be an asset. I have a track record of developing award-winning corporate PR campaigns and specialized experience in promotions for the entertainment industry for which your company is renowned.
Describe Why You Like the Company
When you are pitching yourself for a job at a company that has no openings, it's vital that you explain in detail why you would like to work for the company. Be as specific as possible to show your enthusiasm and knowledge of the organization.
I have admired this company since the launch of your rebranding initiative for XYZ Co. in 2015. I also had the opportunity to attend a professional development series moderated by vice president Susan Gilbert, which was both informative and inspiring. It has long been a professional career goal to work for your organization, and I would very much appreciate your consideration for any current or future role you think I might be suited for.
You should attach a resume and work samples detailing your background and experience.
Acknowledge the Cold Call
In your letter, it is OK to let them know you are aware there are no current openings. It shows your sincerity as well as leaves the door open, even if you don't get a call back right away.
I realize you don't have any posted openings at the moment, but I wanted to introduce myself and express my interest in the event a position becomes available in the future.
You can mention you are willing to come in for an interview to connect and learn more about the company, its goals and objectives.
Make plans to follow up on your letter every few weeks, either by emailing or calling the department head or human resources office. Keep an eye on the company website for new job postings. You will already be established and recognized as a possible candidate.

How to write a cover letter to a company that does not have a job opening.
Searching for a job takes time and planning. When looking for a new job, you may find that some companies you are interested in working for do not have openings. Instead of avoiding those companies, introduce yourself by writing and sending a cover letter of inquiry along with your resume. Before you write your letter, take time to learn about the company. Write your letter carefully to present your skills and experience in the best light.
Set up your letter using the proper business format. If you are sending a hard copy of the cover letter, put your name and contact information on the top of the stationary. Include your e-mail address and a phone number where the employer can reach you.
If emailing a letter, begin the letter by greeting the person using a formal greeting. For example, do not begin the letter with “Dear John,” but instead use “Dear Mr. Smith.” Close your letter using “Sincerely.” Remember to physically sign your letter if sending a hard copy.
Send your letter to a specific person within the organization. Check online or call the company and ask who manages the department you would like to work in. Ask for the proper spelling.
If you cannot find the information, address your cover letter to the Human Resources Director of the company. Avoid sending a generic cover letter addressed to “Dear Sir or Madam” when writing a letter of interest. Taking the time to find out whom to send the letter to shows the employer you are serious about your job search.
State the reason for your letter in the first paragraph. Begin your letter with a phrase similar to, “The purpose of this letter is to express my interest in working for your organization.” Change the wording to be specific to the organization or company you are writing.
Continue the first paragraph by communicating why you are interested in the company. Mention something that you admire about the organization. For example, mention its level of commitment to the environment, its innovative products or its reputation for excellent customer service.
Summarize your skills and experience in the middle paragraph. Keep your sentences short and focused. Let the reader know why you would be a good fit for the company by focusing on your strengths. Include any supervisory experience you have.
If you are willing to relocate, let the potential employer know. Do not be shy about highlighting your accomplishments, as this may be your only communication with the employer.
Close your cover letter by thanking the person for taking the time to read your letter. Continue the last paragraph by telling the person to whom you addressed the letter that you will be calling in the next week to follow-up. If you are going to be in the area, tell the employer you are planning on visiting the office and would like to meet. Indicate that you are looking forward to hearing back from the company.
Include your resume in the body of the e-mail message and as an attachment. Many companies will not open attachments from unknown senders.
In the subject line of an e-mail correspondence, write “Job Inquiry.”
Send letters of interest to every employer on your list. Do not wait for a response from one company before sending out another letter.
Stay positive during your job hunt.
Ask friends and family members to introduce you to potential employers.
Respect a company who states “no phone calls” in an ad or on a website.

Writing an articulate cover letter is challenging for all job seekers. But if you have little or no work experience in a field, the stakes are higher. It’s more challenging to prove your value when you don’t have a series of professional accomplishments to back up your assertions. On the bright side, you probably have more to offer an employer than you realize. You just have to package your strengths the right way.
In this article, you’re going to learn how to write a cover letter for a job with no experience in that field. And we’ll look at a full sample after going through the steps.

How to Write a Cover Letter With No Experience
1. the main purpose of your cover letter with no experience.
The purpose of a cover letter is to complement your resume and convince more employers to interview you. You may refer to your resume when writing a cover letter for a job application, but you must expand upon points made in the resume when writing the cover letter.
The cover letter should breathe life into the points made in the resume, and create a compelling—or even emotional—narrative around your career hopes and aspirations . It’s your chance to tell your story and show that you have the passion and the drive to come into a job and make a difference.
And at the end, it should ASK for the interview. We’ll talk about that coming up. Let’s get started by going through how to write a cover letter with no experience, step-by-step…
2. Cover Letter Contact Information
When beginning a cover letter for a job application, start with your contact details in the top left-hand corner of the page. Include your name, city of residence, phone number, and email address. (To preserve your privacy, do not include your physical address). You should also include your LinkedIn URL. Next, write the name of the company you’re applying to, and its city of residence.
3. Your Salutation
Ideally, you address your reader by name in your salutation. Internet sleuthing may reveal the name of the hiring manager. If you can’t find a name, you have two options: call the organization and ask to learn more about the position, or write “Dear ” or “Dear Hiring Manager.”
This isn’t ideal, though. You should really only be sending a cover letter if you know the hiring manager’s name and have some specific information about the position. So if you know nothing specific about the hiring manager or job, and the company hasn’t asked for a cover letter specifically, then you probably don’t need to send it .
4. Cover Letter Introduction
Use this section of your cover letter to introduce yourself and share your enthusiasm and why you applied for the position .
Start with your name and provide some background on your strengths. Always identify the position you’re seeking and how you learned about it. If someone at the company told you about the job, then mention that person’s name (only after asking their permission, though). Aim for one to two sentences in your Introduction—keep it short, sweet, and precise.
Example Cover Letter Introduction with No Experience in the Field:
“Hello, my name is Grace Addington, and I’m a goal- and detail-oriented civil engineering graduate from Petaluma College. I was excited to learn about the Junior Engineer internship at Bay Area Rapid Transportation through my former classmate Katie Heinz.”
5. Body Paragraphs
Here comes the most critical part of writing a cover letter with no experience. The purpose of your body paragraphs (one to two brief paragraphs, tops) is to prove that you’re the best candidate for the position. Seeing as how you have little or no previous professional work experience to fall back on, you’ll want to place emphasis on soft skills —attributes of a personal nature that say a lot about your work ethic and ability to work in sync with others. Or, if you have job-related skills (AKA hard skills) from another type of role, point out how those skills will help you transition into this next job and succeed quickly.
That’s what hiring managers are looking for! So while it’s great to write about soft skills and put together a cover letter talking about how you’re willing to learn their job… it’s much better to point out any hands-on experience that you have. So if you’re able, always highlight that first and foremost.
For example, if you had an internship, worked in an unrelated field, did a few academic projects while studying, gave a presentation, etc., those are still valuable pieces to put on your resume AND in your cover letter.
Your resume likely already consists of part-time jobs or school activities or memberships in school associations that maybe aren’t 100% related to the job you’re going after.
Look closer, though—you’ve probably garnered skills in these experiences that can carry over to the job you’re applying for. Below are two examples of cover letter body paragraphs that hone in on two key phrases noted in a job advertisement as requirements: “strong interpersonal skills” and “positive work ethic.” You should be able to figure out pretty quickly which example hits the mark.
Let’s look at two sample paragraphs now from cover letters with no experience in a field:
“I am Twig & Twine’s ideal office manager. As my resume states, I served as an RA at my dorm. I know how to manage an array of things.”
“You’re looking for a candidate with strong interpersonal skills and a positive work ethic. While serving as an RA at Porter College’s main dormitory, I planned monthly social events for over 200 students, settled two to five student disputes per week, and mentored a select group of students in Composition. The experience taught me, rather quickly, how to efficiently multi-task, and how to effectively settle conflicts of all types in a calm, level-headed manner. I feel confident stating that I can bring these talents to Twig & Twine’s office manager position.”
The second example takes the duties that likely appeared in the RA position on the resume and then digs deep, illustrating how the tackling of those duties turned into accomplishments, and led the applicant to grow the crucial skills needed for the office manager position.
One last thing about body paragraphs—remember to frame your message around the employer’s needs, and not yours. Focus on what you can bring to the job, and how your talents will translate into success for the company. That’s important in any cover letter, and becomes even more crucial in a cover letter with no previous work experience.
6. Concluding Your Cover Letter
End your cover letter by reiterating why you’re the best candidate and express your interest once again in the position. And ask them for the interview! It’s surprising but most job seekers don’t do this, and it’s been shown to improve your chances of getting a call to come in for an interview!
So conclude your cover letter by thanking the reader for the time they took to review your application, and tell them you’d like to find a time to meet for an interview to see if it might be a good fit to work together. To close, sign off formally. Try “Respectfully yours” or “Sincerely.”
7. Proofread Everything
Before sending out your new cover letter, read it out loud to catch errors quickly. Ask a trustworthy person to read it as well. Nothing stops you from getting interviews faster than an obvious typo or error in your cover letter or resume, and you only have to check once, but make sure you’re checking it thoroughly!
8. Save it as a PDF
Once the content is finalized, save it as a PDF and title it “ Cover Letter” to prevent confusion. Voila! You’re done. If you follow the tips above, you’ll have a great cover letter with no experience so you can get interviews and job offers in this new field!
Sample Cover Letter With No Experience in Field:
Next, let’s look at a full sample of a cover letter that explains why you’d fit well in a role ( and why you chose to apply for this type of role ):
Dear Name, I’m writing to you regarding the Sales Associate job posting, which I believe reports to you. I can offer 5+ years of experience working directly with customers over the phone and in person, primarily in customer support. Although I haven’t worked directly in sales, my customer support experience has helped me build skills in communication, persuasion, and problem-solving, which I believe will translate well into selling software subscriptions for your firm. I’m motivated to transition into sales to continue challenging myself and growing in my career, and I’ve always enjoyed a challenge, which I think working in sales will provide me. I’ve attached my resume for your review. If any of the above sounds interesting, I’d welcome the chance to talk on the phone this week. Thanks for considering my note today. Best regards, Your Name
This cover letter is upfront and clear that you have no experience in the field of sales, but shows that you’re willing to learn and excited to learn this new job. That’s essential!
You don’t JUST want to say you’re willing to learn, though. You want to PROVE that you’ll be able to learn. That’s why this letter also mentions the experience you have that is most similar. In the case of the example above, it’s the customer service experience and communication skills.
While this person may not have sold anything to customers, they still interacted with customers directly, which will be seen as a plus.
One other thing you should always point out if possible: Experience working in the same industry. So if you’ve never done sales, but you did customer support in the exact same industry as the employer, that’s a huge plus… because it means you’ll have less learning needed on the job!

You want to work for an organization, but you can’t seem to find a public job posting. You’re not sure if there’s an opening.
You’re not sure if they’ll welcome you. You’re wondering should I apply ? If I apply, how should I apply?
First things first…
Should you apply or reach out to an organization when they don’t have a job posting? Heck Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Three reasons:
- Great organizations are always, always combing the world for the greatest talent. They’re always in hiring mode, whether they have a budget for a new position or don’t have a budget for a new position.
They are constantly looking for the greatest resources because they know the greatest resources don’t always come along or are available when they need them.
- They’ll trade up. If there are ten people in an organization, there’s at least one or two of them the company would be willing to trade out for a better performer. It’s just simple math.
Now start adding a zero to those numbers. If there are 100 people in the company, that’s ten to 20 people they’d likely trade out.
What about a 1,000 people in the company? That’s 200 openings, even if they don’t have extra budget to hire additional resources. There is still 10-20% of their organization they feel they can improve with better resources.
- Less competition . There’ll be a lot less competition. If there’s no job posting, it’s a deterrent for well more than 90% of the people. So most of them won’t even try it.
The ones who do, unless they’re sitting next to you watching this video, they’re not going to know exactly how to do that.
This is going to give the recruiters and the HR people and the hiring officials more time to give your submittal more care and consideration.
Now, how should I do it?
There are seven areas to address in your introduction or your cover letter.
Before I get into what those seven topics are, I want to talk about a couple of other ways you can introduce yourself:

When you want to target a company and don’t see a job positing, reach out with this cover letter (introduction, email, etc.):
- Why you’re writing to them.
The reason I’m writing to you is because I want to join your company. But, you can’t leave them there. You need to give them some context and some rationale as to why you want to work at that organization.
- Your rationale for wanting to work there.
The reasons I want to work here are…based on my research…and then insert your rationale.
- What you offer and why you’re a great fit.
I offer X years of experience in this particular industry, doing these particular jobs which makes me a great fit to support your organization and the products and services it delivers. But you can’t leave them there. You’ve got to drive a little nail into this one. That’s number four…
- Home run accomplishment.
Tell them about a significant accomplishment you know is going to be enticing and a great match for that company.
A particular accomplishment I’m proud of or a significant accomplishment or a major accomplishment is…and then tell them specifically what it is.
- Pointing them in the direction of more evidence of why you’re a great fit.
I want you to tell them exactly where in the resume you want them to look for more evidence that greatly aligns you with what they need for their organization.
- Welcome the opportunity to speak with them.
I’d welcome the opportunity to speak with you…
- Thank them for their consideration.
I want to thank you for your consideration…

So figure out something about yourself and your background that relates to the company or position you're interested in, and use that to build a connection.
3. Show what you bring the company
You’ll get more into the details after your opening paragraph, of course. But your cover letter opener should still tell the reader, “This person can do something for us,” rather than, “This job would really help them.”
4. Stick to the point
Your opener, while creative, should still be relevant to the job. Don’t begin by highlighting an unrelated accomplishment or recounting an anecdote that never connects back to why you’re applying for the job. Part of writing an effective cover letter is curating key information that relates to that specific job opportunity and shows the reader that you're a good fit for the role.
5. Don't start with “To Whom It May Concern”
Find an alternative to “ To Whom It May Concern .” Seriously, banish those five words from your cover letter vocabulary forever. Nowadays, this phrase is seen as outdated, overused, and even rude—especially when better options exist.

What is a Cover Letter?
A cover letter is a one-page document that you submit as part of your job application, alongside your resume .
Its purpose is to introduce you and briefly summarize your professional background. On average, your cover letter should be from 250 to 400 words long .
A good cover letter can give the hiring manager more insight into what makes you a good candidate and help them make up their mind about whether they should invite you for an interview. A bad cover letter, though, will get ignored (at best) and lose you the job (at worst).
So, to make sure this doesn’t happen, it’s essential to know how to write a convincing cover letter.
The first thing to remember is that a cover letter is a supplement to your resume, not a replacement. Meaning, you shouldn’t just repeat whatever is mentioned in your resume and call it a day.
Optimally, you should use your cover letter to shed more light on your skills and qualifications, as well as explain anything you didn’t have space for in your resume (e.g. a career gap or why you’re changing careers).
If you’re writing a cover letter for the first time, though, putting all this together might seem pretty tough.

- Header - Input your contact information.

A good practice here is to find the hiring manager’s name and address them directly instead of using the traditional “dear sir or madam.” This shows that you’re really invested in the company and that you took your time to do some research about the job.
So, how can you find out the hiring manager’s name?
One way to do this is by looking up the head of the company’s relevant department on LinkedIn. Let’s say you’re applying for the position of Communication Specialist at Novoresume. The hiring manager is probably the Head of Communications or the Chief Communications Office.
Or let’s say you’re applying for the position of server at a restaurant. In that case, you’d be looking to find out who the restaurant manager is.
If this doesn’t work, you can also check out the “Team” page on the company website; there’s a good chance you’ll at least find the right person there.
If you still can’t find out the hiring manager’s name, here are several other greetings you can use:
- Dear [Department] Hiring Manager
- Dear Hiring Manager
- To whom it may concern
- Dear [Department] Team
#4. Create an attention-grabbing introduction
Recruiters get hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of applications. Chances are, they’re not going to be reading every single cover letter end-to-end.
So, it’s essential to catch their attention from the very first paragraph.
The problem with most cover letter opening paragraphs, though, is that they’re usually extremely generic, often looking something like this:
Hey, my name is Jonathan and I’d like to work as a Sales Manager at XYZ Inc. I’ve worked as a sales manager at MadeUpCompany Inc. for 5+ years, so I believe that I’d be a good fit for the position.
As you can probably tell, this opening paragraph doesn’t tell the hiring manager anything other than that you’ve worked the job before - and that’s not really helpful in setting you apart from other candidates.
What you want to do, instead, is start off with 2-3 of your top achievements to really grab the reader’s attention. Preferably, the achievements should be as relevant as possible to the position.
For example:
My name’s Michael and I’d like to help XYZ Inc. hit and exceed its sales goals as a Sales Manager. I’ve worked with Company X, a fin-tech company, for 3+ years. As a Sales Representative, I generated an average of $30,000+ in sales per month (beating the KPIs by around 40%). I believe that my previous industry experience, as well as my excellence in sales, makes me the right candidate for the role of X at Company Y.
The second example shows how the candidate is a top performer. The first just shows that they’ve worked a sales job before.

#5. Show you’re the perfect person for the job
One great thing about cover letters is that they allow you to expand more on the top achievements from your resume and really show the hiring manager that you’re the right person for the job.
A good way to do that is to first read the job ad and really understand what skills/experiences are required, and then to ensure that your cover letter touches upon the said skills or experiences.
In my previous role as a Facebook Marketing Expert at XYZ Inc. I handled customer acquisition through ads, managing a monthly Facebook ad budget of $20,000+. As the sole digital marketer at the company, I managed the ad creation and management process end-to-end. This means I created the ad copy and images, as well as picked the targeting, ran optimization trials, and so on.

- Wrap up any points you couldn't in the previous paragraphs. Mention anything you’ve left out that you think could help the hiring manager make up your mind.
- Thank the hiring manager for their time. After all, it never hurts to be polite.
- Finish the cover letter with a call to action. A call to action is a great way to make your cover letter ending as memorable as possible.

Once you’re done with the final paragraph, all you have to do is write down a formal “goodbye” and you’re good to go.
