The AAA Center for Creative Writing is a unit dedicated to furthering AUCC's role in the development of a national literature through programs, projects and activities that will both nurture literary writers and literary scholars in Ghana, and encourage their interaction with other writers and artists in West Africa and around the world.

• Reading and Talks: The series Distinguished Visiting Writers, One Book One Community, In their Own Words, and Notable New Writers bring some of today's most recognized authors to Adabraka, Accra, for readings, talks, and other engagements with students and the community
• Classes and Workshops: Writing Clinic and Writers Studio offer intimate and accessible Fiction, Poetry and Creative Nonfiction writing classes and workshops with acclaimed authors and faculty members in person and in online formats
• Writers Conferences: An annual three-day Writers Conference (with new art/crafts and acoustic music) are held at Discovery House
• Public/Street Recitals and Readings:   Tabon , a one-day street festival (Sunday during the Homowo) of kasahari (street poetry), comedy, street food, street art and Ga music in honor of the community's roots, is held at Discovery House and adjoining street corners. Event is in collaboration with local business, media, Hospitality, Banks, the traditional authority, the police and medical services

High school students from around the district band together to teach creative writing to elementary schoolers.

Two Mount Vernon STEAM Academy students teamed up this summer to create the Mount Vernon Public Library Creative Writing Camp. This initiative gives back to their community and uplifts younger elementary school-aged children with the power of knowledge. Kaylin Vidaurre, a rising senior, and Leonard David Oduro, a rising junior at the STEAM Academy, have spent late nights preparing for this program and assembling a group of high school volunteers who are just as passionate about spreading their love of creative writing.

Kaylin and Leonard went to great lengths to start this summer camp. After the long days of extracurricular activities and college preparatory programs, they would come home and plan for the summer program, creating syllabi and curriculums, getting in touch with the board of trustees, and onboarding volunteers.

“We give back to the community by obtaining what we learn at these college programs and giving back to these kids,” said Leonard. “We focused on what the creative camp needed, the roles each volunteer required, and we utilized our connections to, in the end, meet the board of trustees which allowed us to do this inside of the Mount Vernon Public Library.”

Although Kaylin is venturing into the teaching profession in her teenage years, she plans on going into gynecology, doing creative writing on the side after hopefully studying at her dream school, SUNY Stony Brook. Leonard plans to mix his love of creative writing with his pursuit of engineering after college. Both students decided that this program would be more impactful if the high school volunteers created their own lesson plans to teach the kids based on the curriculum.

Ellie DeGrandpre, a rising senior at the Denzel Washington School of the Arts and a high school volunteer in the program, led the lesson on literary themes using “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein as an example. The class took turns reading a page from the book, passing it around the room popcorn style. Then, Ellie led a discussion on the book's themes – friendship, selflessness and love. She sourced a worksheet to guide the younger students, taking her time if they had any difficulties, and prompting creative answers.

“I had taken a creative writing class in the past and love them,” said Ellie. “ I wanted to think about what aspects kids would like and would find entertaining but also engaging and easy to understand for younger grades.”

When teaching, Ellie channels her freshman writing teacher, Ms. Fitzmorris. “I was trying to think of things that she taught me that really made an impact on my comprehension, so that way I can give it to the kids,” said Ellie.

This creative writing summer camp is a great chance for the young students of Mount Vernon to beat the summer slide and stay engaged with other students. Carolyn Harris, a grandmother of a student and an adult volunteer at the program sees the great value of this program. She has noticed that her grandchild has a love for creative writing, but this is also building up her confidence in herself and public speaking.

“She really loves creative writing,” said Ms. Harris. "The student volunteers take their time with the children. It helps them build up their confidence.”

Welcome back to school MVCSD Faculty and Staff!

I am thrilled to welcome all faculty and staff back for Convocation on Wednesday, August 28, and Superintendent’s Conference Day on August 29! With schools opening soon, I am fully confident in the outstanding team we have in place to start the year. We all work diligently and eagerly to provide a quality education to our scholars, and that commitment means the world to me and our students. This year, just like last year, I know that our students are in the right hands to excel.

Join us on Saturday, August 31 from 11:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. for the 7th annual Wakanda Celebration at Traphagen School! The event will feature live entertainment for the entire family with performers directly from Africa and the Caribbean!

While it has been our consistent policy to refrain from commenting upon specific personnel matters as well as any ongoing litigation, as recently reported by the Journal News, Dr. Bennett-Conroy unilaterally chose to make her employment circumstances public by way of her motion to “Stay” her scheduled Employment Arbitration hearing. Although the District intends to oppose this application vigorously, it is essential to note that this tactic may compel the Mount Vernon City School District and the community to continue to pay two superintendent salaries, notwithstanding the District’s concerted efforts to conclude this matter as quickly as possible.

With the football season swiftly approaching, four Mount Vernon High School players were names to LoHud's annual football watch list. The list is chosen with contributions from coaches in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland. Senior Knights Edward Ababio, Dwight Findlay, Kahsai Francois and Deshaun Terry were chosen as players expected to have big seasons in 2024. The Knights will play their first game home game at Memorial Field on Saturday, September 7, at 1 p.m. against the Kennedy Knights from the Bronx. Click here to view the list on LoHud.

Soon after graduation from Mount Vernon High School in 1987, James "Talent" Harris became heavily involved in media, including television, comedy and radio. Talent Harris has headlined his own comedy shows and tours, as well as making special appearances on programs such as BET’s Comic View, HBO’s SNAPs and Def Comedy Jam. He also earned the position as host of New York’s 98.7 KISS FM’s Morning Show.

Community members and their children gathered at The Doles Center on Saturday, August 10, 2024, to receive backpacks and school supplies during the Buddy White Project’s giveaway. Approximately 1,300 book bags were given away. 

Mount Vernon native Rai Benjamin has won the Olympic gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles! Benjamin was victorious with a time of 46.460 seconds. Congratulations Rai!

Although aimed primarily at fiction writers, Morgen provides the tools for honing your writing until it shines. In the free 'Editing Micro Fiction' and 'Editing Flash Fiction' tutorials, she provided a piece she wrote for these sessions - which you can whittle down yourself if you pause the videos - and guides you in what to keep and what can be removed without losing the essence of the piece. As well as the live/recordings of the weekly 'Editing 101' sessions (where you can ask her questions about editing), there will be other tutorials where Morgen shares her knowledge gained from almost twenty years of editing 300+ manuscripts for publishers and directly for (with) authors.
