Position Classification Description

This is a description of a Staff Position Classification. It is not an announcement of a position opening. To view descriptions of current openings, please go to UNMJobs and Search Postings to view positions that are currently accepting applications.

The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. They should not be viewed as an exhaustive list of the specific duties and prerequisites applicable to individual positions that have been so classified.

Under limited supervision, provides specialized education, training, and technical coordination within an area of educational concern to interprofessional provider groups, teachers, classroom personnel and/or community programs. Assesses needs, designs, develops, and delivers workshops, informational material, and/or special programs to meet community and/or classroom needs. Provides independent consultation and advice to educators on specific requirements, and on educational methods and techniques within an area of professional specialty.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs training and educational needs assessments for individual classrooms, as appropriate to the objectives of the program.
  • Designs, develops, and delivers training programs and workshops to educators and other interdisciplinary professionals working within the New Mexico Public School system in support of high quality outcomes for New Mexico students.
  • Provides independent technical advice, consultation, and individualized assistance to educators and other interdisciplinary professionals within area of professional specialty utilizing current best practices.
  • Assesses local and state educational resources within area of professional expertise, and designs and develops special programs for resources development as appropriate.
  • Develops and produces evidenced based special education literature and information packages for dissemination to educational programs and constituencies, in accordance with need.
  • Participates in committees and advisory boards, and contributes to the development of policies and program initiatives related to statewide education outcomes for students within area of professional specialty.
  • May supervise personnel, which may include recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  • May serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to provide independent advice and guidance to educators within area of expertise.
  • Knowledge and understanding of needs assessment principles, processes, and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the best practices interventions and/or developmental needs of the specified client population.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local education programs and/or programs associated with the area of specialty.
  • Professional skills and expertise in a specified therapeutic and/or educational field.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, and working efficiently.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Knowledge of available community clinical and educational resources within area of specialty.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops orally and/or in a variety of formats.

Conditions of Employment

  • May require discipline-specific licensure and/or professional certification, as specified by the department in the preferences.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Light physical effort. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 10 pounds or some standing or walking. Effort applies to no more than two (2) hours per day.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is performed both in a typical office environment as well as classrooms throughout New Mexico.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
