Essay on my Hobby : My Hobby is Gardening

I belong to a farmer’s family. After settling down in the metro cities, I have noticed my family craving to spare their time for Mother Nature. Having a family background with an ample number of agricultural jobholders, I decided to devise a small garden of my own. Earlier in my penthouse, I decided to create a small rooftop garden due to lack of space. This is how gardening helped me release the amplitude amount of endorphins in my whole family after a stressful day. Gardening is the most accessible and manageable task for a human being. All it requires is enough motivation for a better yield. It is a decampment towards the serenity and beauty of nature with loads of unadulterated indulgence. Gardening has always helped me look towards a better future. It has maintained me to stay submerged with my fondness for plants and blossoms. It is a  form of recreational activity after my school hours. Springing from botanical gardens to every miniature backyard, I have visited all of them. Attending several gardens motivates me to produce a surplus of plants in my garden.

What do I do for my hobby gardening?

Gardening can be done on several types of soil and with numerous varieties of yield. Gardening can be of many types such as herb, flowers, vegetables or kitchen, rose, rock, water, and indoor gardening. According to the needs and availability of tools and garden supplies suited for the purpose, we choose the respective criteria.

Soil is the most important trait for gardening. It requires the accurate level of manure and water to flourish and drop off blooming yield. Soil is a requirement because it constitutes a certain amount of organisms that help in the conversion of plant nutrients from the putrefied subject. To harvest a beautiful garden, healthy soil is the most important necessity. In my rooftop gardens, I have utilized an inadequate amount of space to grow flowering plants and a few creepers and climbers for my mother’s kitchen. Gardening requires an ample amount of attention and time. Starting from the preparation of the soil to the composting till the blossoms are achieved, everything requires dedication. In the beginning, I started with a proper layout for an inadequate stretch. Then I had to pick among the favored and accessible varieties to start with. Obtaining good seeded plants and accessible supplies available at my home, I started my gardening tenure. To help my mom’s kitchen I even planted a few vegetable seeds such as bitter gourd, lemon, chilies, tomatoes, and a few leafy vegetables. I affirmed to keep my plants away from the weeds and pests. I took assistance from my uncle with organic manures and compost to get a better yield and prettier blossoms for every morning to wake up to. I have used unused plastic bottles to grow creepers and a few flowering and herb plants to create an aesthetic outlook for my garden. Plants such as basil, money plants, rosemary, spinach, and much more hanging houseleeks were grown from the waste bottles. The proper amount of sun and shade are required as it may inhibit adequate plant growth. Butterflies, honey bees, flower beetles are a regular visitor to my garden. A few of my houseplants are ferns, dracaena, philodendron, and aglaonema. The vegetables I have grown are placed in a sunny spot, and there’s an ample amount of water supply adjacent to it. These vegetables are used in our kitchen daily.

Essay on “My favourite Hobby “Gardening”” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

My favourite Hobby “Gardening”

The small garden in front of my house is the result of my favorite hobby, gardening. Gardening is my favorite hobby. I think, it is the best of all the hobbies which one can follow with a lot of amusement and benefit to health. I have laid out a smaller of amusement and benefit to health. I have laid out a smaller garden in front of my house. When I sit in my smaller garden a great pleasure. Sweet fragrant flowers of different hues sweeten as my mind. It helps me in many ways. While working in the garden not only do I spend my time in a better way but also improve my health as thus I spend my time in better way but also improve my health as thus I take exercise unwillingly. It brings me close to Nature and I feel lost like Wordsworth in the beauty of blooms and blossoms around me.

The garden in front of my house is small, no doubt, but even then I am proud of it because it is the result of my own hard labor. There are smaller beds of flowers in which I grow seasonal flowers. When the plants bear blossoms, I feel a thrill of joy in my mind and take pride in my creative labor. Whenever any of my friends asks me anything about sowing and maintaining of plants. I give him information with elated feelings.

Surrounded by the beds of flowers is a smaller lawn with soft velvety green grass. I am very fond of this lawn ad take pride in maintaining it trim, tidy and neat. In the evening we sit in this lawn and talk chat and discuss several things. I have grown fruit fetes along the fringes of the grass lawn. Some of the fruit trees yield fruits but most of them are still young. Whenever any one of my friends comes. I offer him the fruits of my own garden with pride. The grapes, guavas and pomegranates of my garden are very sweet and juicy. Last year I planted a mango sapling which to the surprise of my friends, relatives and even myself, has borne fruit this year. Whenever any visitor comes to my house these days, I very proudly invite his attention to the hardly two feet tall tree that bears the fruit. This little garden is a place where I find peace and happiness.

Essay No. 2

Gardening is not very difficult. It involves preparing the soil, planting vegetables or flowers and paying attention to the garden. Many people make gardening their hobby and it is also a good form of exercise.

The first step in gardening is the preparation of the soil. If the soil is not god, the garden will not flourish. Dig the surface of the earth; then mix the top soil with manure and water. If you are planning a vegetable garden, prepare hedges for different vegetables you hope to plant; however flowers do not need hedges.

The vegetables or flowers that you will plant are often young plants in a water- proof bag. Dig a small hole , place the small plants along with the soil into the ground and cover with the mixed soil. Water the new plant.

After planting, you should pay close attention to your garden. This involves removing the weeds, removing dead leaves around the plants and watering the garden often.

Gardening makes one happy; when one is tired of studying or staying indoors, gardening gives one the opportunity to make light work outside. Moving around in the garden is also a kind of exercise for the body. A garden is also beneficial, as it provides people with flowers and vegetables.

Essay on My Hobby Gardening in 1000-1500 Words

Gardening is a hobby that has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It all started when I was a young child, watching my parents tend to the plants and flowers in our backyard. I was fascinated by the way they nurtured the plants, watching them grow and bloom into beautiful flowers and delicious fruits and vegetables. As I grew older, I began to take an interest in gardening myself, and it has since become a passion that brings me joy and fulfillment.

There are many reasons why I love gardening so much. One of the main reasons is the sense of peace and tranquility it brings me. There is something incredibly calming about being out in the garden, surrounded by nature and the beauty of the plants and flowers. It is a way for me to escape from the stresses and pressures of everyday life, and to connect with the natural world around me.

Another reason why I love gardening is the sense of accomplishment it brings. There is nothing quite like the feeling of watching a plant that you have nurtured and cared for grow and thrive. Whether it is a beautiful flower that blooms for the first time, or a delicious vegetable that you have grown from seed, there is a sense of pride and satisfaction that comes from knowing that you have played a part in the plant’s growth and development.

Gardening also allows me to be creative and express myself in a unique way. I love experimenting with different plants and flowers, trying out new combinations and designs in my garden. It is a way for me to showcase my personality and style, and to create a space that is truly my own. Whether it is a colorful flower bed, a lush vegetable garden, or a serene water feature, my garden is a reflection of who I am and what I love.

In addition to the personal benefits of gardening, there are also many practical benefits that come from this hobby. For one, gardening is a great form of exercise. Tending to the plants, digging in the soil, and carrying bags of mulch or compost all require physical effort, which helps to keep me active and healthy. Gardening is also a great way to save money on groceries, as I am able to grow my own fruits and vegetables right in my backyard. Not only does this save me money, but it also ensures that I am eating fresh, organic produce that I have grown myself.

One of the things I love most about gardening is the sense of community that it brings. I have met so many wonderful people through my shared love of gardening, from fellow hobbyists at the local garden center to neighbors who stop by to admire my garden. Gardening has a way of bringing people together, whether it is through sharing tips and advice, swapping plants and seeds, or simply enjoying each other’s company in the garden. It is a hobby that fosters a sense of connection and camaraderie, and I am grateful for the friendships that I have made through my shared love of gardening.

Of course, like any hobby, gardening also has its challenges. There are times when the weather does not cooperate, or when pests and diseases threaten to destroy all of my hard work. There are also times when a plant that I have nurtured for months suddenly withers and dies, leaving me feeling disappointed and frustrated. However, I have learned to take these challenges in stride, and to see them as opportunities for growth and learning. Gardening has taught me patience, resilience, and perseverance, and has helped me to develop a greater appreciation for the beauty and fragility of the natural world.

In conclusion, gardening is a hobby that brings me immense joy and fulfillment. It allows me to connect with nature, express myself creatively, and enjoy the many practical benefits that come from growing my own plants and flowers. Gardening has taught me valuable life lessons, and has helped me to develop a greater sense of peace, purpose, and connection with the world around me. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue this hobby, and look forward to many more years of tending to my garden and watching it flourish and grow.

Hobbies are the best means of entertainment, knowledge and spending our leisure time. Hobbies bring happiness to our idle routine life. They keep us away from bad habits. Hobbies depend upon the likings of an individual. There are many types of hobbies- reading, stamp collection, coin collection, sports, singing, dancing, etc.

My hobby is gardening . I love nature very much. My parents are also very fond of gardening. I acquired this hobby from them. We have a spacious garden in the backyard. We have a couple of trees like mangoes , lemon, chikoo, and guava.

We also have a variety of flowering plants like Rose , Mogara, Chameli, Hibiscus, Lily, etc. I spend one hour in the evening in the garden. I regularly water the plants and manure them. I remove the weeds and do all the essential work there. I feel very comfortable when I am in my garden. All the plants and trees are my friends . I talk to them. They make me happy whenever I am in a bad mood. Working in the garden keeps me physically fit.

Many birds regularly visit our garden. They build their nests at suitable places. I enjoy watching them. I have got a good knowledge of birds. I can identify them and know their food habits. We get a good amount of fruits and vegetables from our garden. I spend a big part of my pocket money on my hobby. I keep on buying seeds, new plants, garden equipment, manure, etc. Some of my friends also have the same hobby. We discuss this with each other. We visit the flower and plant exhibitions held in the city .

Thus this hobby keeps me tension-free and fresh. I feel much nearer to God and Mother Nature when I am in the garden.

Set 2: Essay On My Hobby Gardening

A hobby is one’s best past time. It is something which while giving satisfaction is enjoyable too. But given a choice, gardening is a very pleasant and rewarding as a hobby. A little piece of land in front or at the back or around the house is enough to launch this hobby. After the day’s hard work, or even before the day begins early in the morning and then for the whole day on a holiday one can enjoy to indulge and involve himself in this hobby.

Right from digging the earth, beating down the moulds into fine-soil, then turning them into small beds, mixing the manure in the soil, one is ready to plant the seeds or the saplings or the seedlings and then softly watering them. In the process one has to select what grows where to give a real glorious glow to the piece of land which may be a pleasure to the eye as also productive for the hobbyists.

If the piece of land is big enough, one arranges and selects proper places for the fruit plants, the papaya, the lemon, the guava, the big banana or even the pomegranate and lichi, but in case it is just a small piece of land one limits oneself to the flowers and a few creepers.

Each day is a day of care and caution, with an eager and an expectant eye one watches the sprouting from the seeds, or the saplings or seedlings, taking roots, and standing up on their own. Gradually the flower seeds have shown up the sproutings and the seedlings showing up new leaves and the growth is watched with such a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment when finally the flowers bloom into their dazzling multi-coloured hues and there is, as if a riot of colours all around. ‘Dancing with the daffodils’ – this is what the great nature-poet Wordsworth has said and rightly so. The hobbyist’s heart also gets elated to watch the perfect result of his labours. And then after months of looking after the grape wine or the papaya or the guava or the banana in a bunch, show up their face first; it is a gratification indeed. The labour has been rewarded.

Thus goes on the game of gardening. Gardening, as a hobby has so many advantages. One can spend one’s leisure time in physical work, which exercises the body; the results elate the mind and the fruits fresh and free are a pleasure to be tasted. Spending spare time in useless gossip or straining the eyesight viewing the T.V. – all this is hardly a useful utilization of one’s leisure. You dig, you till, you soil with your hands, you even sweat in the process and the least of it all, you are constantly in the company of nature which company is never boring never tiring rather, it is ever rewarding in every way. You reap the fruits of your labour-what else can be so satisfying than that. You are face to face with the spirituality of the matter how from such a small seed gets produced such beauty, such lustre and such a result. God’s nature is wonderful

that’s what you have at last to feel and say. This is thus the most rewarding hobby, if one develops it and enjoys it too. The hobby of gardening can give us an insight in understanding the purport of what Wordsworth has said in these lines about nature. One impulse from the vernal wood May teach you more of man Of moral evil and of good Than all the Sages can.

Nature is the book from which one can learn all that the creation is about, the mysteries of life, the beauties of life and the bounties bestowed upon us by the creator.

My hobby is photography. It is a very useful hobby as it trains the mind as well as the eye. Photography develops taste for beauty and also makes us careful, smart and neat. I feel that there is no other hobby so interesting and useful as photography.

My uncle presented me a camera on my birthday and since then my interest in photography kept on increasing. I have a great collection of photographs in my album. Lord Salisbury’s hobby was to work in the chemical laboratory. The painting was the hobby of Sir Winston Churchill whereas Bernard Shaw was fond of growing vegetables in his garden. Though there are different things I like to do during my free time but the thing that attracts all of my attention is gardening. This hobby of mine is an ultimate source of pleasure and Joy for me.

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever, Its loveliness increases; it will never, Pass into nothingness.” (John Keats)

l have made a beautiful garden in the lawn attached to my home. I have grown lush green grass there, vegetables, flowers and trees of different kinds. The fresh look of this garden provides me with fantastic pleasure and peace of mind. The sweet fragrance of these flowers gives me real delight. This hobby of mine also makes me thoughtful. These plants and flowers seem to have some relevance to human life. These flowers tell us that beauty is short-lived and so is human life. I have come to know that it costs us nothing to beautify the place where we live. If we spend little time to grow plums and flowers. we can make our towns and cities beautiful to wipe away ugliness and pollution from our country.

A sensitive plant in I garden grew, And the young winds fed it with silver dew, And it opened its fan-like leaves to the light, and closed them beneath the kisses of night.” (Percy Bysshe Shelley)

2. Essay on My Favourite Hobby with Quotes for Class 12 – 400+ Words

Today, man lives in a world where struggle and effort is necessary for survival. He has to toil from dawn to dusk. Physical and mental exertions leave him utterly exhausted and enervated after the whole day’s work. The daily routine life rusts his talent and efficiency.

The hobby is an activity that a person does for pleasure in his leisure time. Time hangs heavy on our shoulders when we do not have anything special to do in our spare time. So, different people have different pastimes. The activity that I do regularly for enjoyment in my spare time is gardening and I love my hobby. Life without a hobby is like food without salt.

I love and like beauty in all forms and flowers symbolize both love and beauty. I have grown different kinds of flowers. These flowers give a fragrant welcome to my guests who have a feeling of freshness as they enter my house. These flowers keep me close to nature. They keep me from the impurities of heart and soul. They enrich my inner self. My hobby saves me from the tedium of life and serves as an oasis in the vast wilderness of life.

“It’s the safety valve of middle life and the solace of age. (Mary Roberts)

These flowers that I have grown in my lawn are a source of catharsis for me as well. Whenever I am cast down, I come to my “living” friends and share my sorrows and sufferings. They listen to me quietly and keep my secrets to themselves. This is a fact that these living organisms listen and respond but we cannot match their frequency. So, in their company, I do not feel the communication gap.

My hobby is a healthy activity. In this polluted age of ours, we are suffocating to death. My hobby, gardening, gives me a feeling of pleasure and freshness. I spend a few rupees on the seeds and saplings and give them rich soil and plenty of water. I do my best to keep them protected, and my whole house becomes fragrant with their sweet smell. I look after my flowers as parents take care of their young kids.

Plants and flowers also have some relevance to human life. These flowers tell us that beauty is short-lived, and so is human life. I have come to know that it costs us nothing to beautify the place where we live. If we spend a little money and time to grow plants and flowers, we can make our town and cities beautiful. We can wipe away the ugliness and pollution from our country.

Last but not least, it is worth pointing out that we should never ride a hobby too hard. We should not make a toil of pleasure. In other words, we should not indulge in a hobby to such an extent as to convert it into a dull and cheerless task. A hobby should be regarded just as a mental recreation.

“Beauty is truth, truth beauty___ that’s all.

Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” (John Keats)

Plants are absolutely essential to life. None of our basic functions from breathing to eating to drinking would be possible without plants. Plants not only act as food sources but also release oxygen and help maintain the water table. The simple fact of the matter is that without plants we would not survive.

Importance of Gardening

While there are many plants growing in the wild, people also cultivate and grow certain plants, bushes and shrubs in their homes or yards. This activity is known as gardening. While it may appear as a hobby to some, the fact is that gardening is actually quite beneficial and, therefore, important to us.

Gardening is a fairly physical activity. It involves weeding, watering of plants, mulching, trellising and harvesting – all of which require physical labour from the gardener. Hence, it becomes an excellent addition to your exercise routine.

Gardening is also a very practical activity. It allows you to grow your own vegetables and fruits thus ensuring that you have healthy food on the table. When you harvest vegetables from your garden, you do so knowing that you’re getting the freshest produce possible.

Gardening for aesthetics appeals to the human need for beauty. Ornamental gardening caters to the side of us that is delighted by beauty. In addition, flowers are a part and parcel of most occasions such as births, anniversaries, weddings, birthdays and funerals.

Gardening also helps sharpen problem solving skills. Researching the best methods to make your garden grow, experimenting with different techniques and designing irrigation systems that work for you all help in improving your skills at creativity, problem solving and planning.

Most people dismiss gardening as a mere hobby. They ignore or downplay the benefits you can get from gardening regularly. The fact is that it is much more than a recreational activity. Imagine what the world would look like without any gardens.

Essay on Gardening: Pleasure of Gardening – Essay 2 (300 words)

Although gardening is a fairly physical activity, it can also be a very relaxing one. It is also remarkably versatile; a garden can range from a single potted plant to an entire greenhouse or yard. In addition, watching something come alive, grow and thrive because of your efforts can be a very satisfying experience. Gardening is often called pleasurable for which there are several reasons.

Pleasure of Gardening

The modern world is a fast paced world. Everyone is in a hurry or extremely busy. Even when people have spare time, they prefer to fill it up with chores of some kind. However, gardening by its very nature is a slow activity. It encourages you to slow down, reconnect with nature and learn to find joy in doing something rather than doing it because it is necessary.

Gardening can offer you many pleasures if you just take the time to stop and enjoy them. Finding the right type of plants for your garden can make you feel a sense of accomplishment. If you have enough space, you can plan a small pond or a recreation spot into your garden, creating a haven for yourself to simply relax and enjoy nature’s beauty. If there are particular flowers you like, you can incorporate them into specific places in your garden. Each time you step out you will see these flowers blooming giving you a feeling of well-being.

To many it may seem that gardening doesn’t fit into the 21 st century which is all about moving fast and getting quick results. However, the opposite is true; gardening provides you with a safe haven from the rigours of the world and your life allowing you to slow your frenetic space and simply be.

Essay on Gardening: A Hobby – Essay 3 (350 words)

The whole point of having a hobby is to spend one’s leisure time in a manner that is both relaxing and useful. Different people have different hobbies, i.e. people differ in their ideas about what helps them relax. Some common hobbies enjoyed by plenty of people are philately, numismatics, swimming, photography and gardening. Having a hobby doesn’t only relax you, but also provide you with boosts of energy that help you in your professional life.

Gardening as a Hobby

Gardening requires quite a bit of manual labour on the part of the gardener. For this reason, some people wonder how it can relax you as a hobby is supposed to. However, for people who like gardening it can be relaxing just to feel the earth on your palms or getting quiet moments or even help you create beauty.

If you decide to take up gardening as a hobby and have no prior experience with it, it is best for you to research gardening. You can do this with the help of books on gardening and online websites. Gardening is a great hobby for everyone from working professionals to retirees. It allows you to connect with your environment and with nature. Instead, learn as much as you can, take in basic tips and tricks and take baby steps. You will find that when given proper attention, a garden can soothe your soul and gardening can calm and centre you.

Essay on Gardening: Recreation to Mind – Essay 4 (400 words)

The 21 st century is the era of instant everything – instant coffee, instant meals, instant orders, instant mails, instant communication and, most importantly, instant results. Theoretically, all these instant things are meant to free up your time. However, in reality, the more time you free up, the more chores you have to do. As a result, not only do you have to have everything done in an instant but also add more things that need to be done instantly. It is no wonder people burn out relatively fast these days. We are setting a pace that is impossible to keep up without negative consequences. Not only does our body protest through various conditions and syndromes but also our mind through mental illnesses and strain.

Gardening as Recreation for the Mind

Gardening requires quite a bit of physical labour, a factor that makes many people reject it as too much on top of everything else. However, that is only one aspect of gardening. The other lesser known aspect, or rather the aspect that only becomes obvious when you actually garden, is the immense restfulness your mind can experience while gardening.

By its very nature, gardening is a slow process. There is no instant gratification here. Instead, it yields its best results when you take time over it and pay attention to details. More importantly, the manual labour exercises your body while leaving your mind free to ruminate over anything and everything – something that is becoming increasingly rare in the frenetic pace of life. It also teaches you the value of waiting for some things; they are better for the wait and you enjoy them more. Think of the fragile begonia plant that you have babied into blooming. The attempt takes time and energy on your part, but the end result is beautiful to the senses.

Gardening also allows you to be in the presence of nature even if that presence is a small potted plant. As the plant grows and thrives, you feel satisfaction from a job well done. The hours that you put into your garden yield beautiful results that please and satisfy your mind, lowering stress and allowing your mind to relax.

In a life that is increasingly fast-paced, frenetic and stressful, your garden becomes an oasis of calm and tranquillity. Spending even an hour working on your garden can help you relax, lower your stress levels and allow your mind to rejoice in the peace that your garden offers. There can be no better recreation for your mind.

Essay on Gardening: Advantages – Essay 5 (450 words)

Gardening is often seen as too slow an activity in a modern fast-paced world. People wonder why they should spend time on something as leisurely as gardening when every free moment is taken up with doing more chores. However, gardening isn’t just about making your surroundings more aesthetically pleasing; it is also about the many benefits it provides you.

Advantages of Gardening

  • Health Benefits – Gardening is a very physical activity. Incorporating an hour or so of gardening can do wonders for your health, the most obvious benefit being weight loss. It doesn’t stop there – studies have shown that gardening helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure and reduce stress and depression. Studies even show that merely looking at a garden is enough to affect blood pressure, heart, muscles and even the electric activity in the brain. It generates feelings of tranquillity and peace and can be very therapeutic overall.
  • Environmental Benefits – There can be no denying the fact that human presence has impacted the environment drastically. However, we can reduce and mitigate this impact by gardening. Plants release oxygen after taking in carbon dioxide thereby generating fresher and cleaner air. Plants also prevent soil erosion because their root systems hold the soil in place. Rain gardens allow you to collect rainwater and prevent pollutants from mixing with lakes and streams. If you have an efficient landscape design around your house, it can help keep the house warmer in winters and cooler in summers, thereby, reducing your energy consumption by as much as 20 percent.
  • Property Value Increase – From a purely aesthetic point of view, a well-maintained garden adds to the property value of your house by enhancing its curb-appeal. It can also encourage people to put in offers for the property faster than they would for an average home.
  • Vegetable Growth – Growing vegetables in your garden has a twofold advantage for you. For one thing, you don’t have to worry about what pesticides and chemicals have been used on the vegetables because you know exactly what you have used to help them grow. Secondly, you get an immense sense of self-satisfaction from providing for yourself and your family in the most basic way.

As you continue down the gardening path, you will learn more and become more proficient. As you know more, you will also be able to contemplate more possibilities for your garden. Gardening doesn’t just help you physically, it also helps you mentally. In addition, it allows you to contribute to environmental health and even your own table. Although gardening yields relatively slow results, those results leave a deeper impact and are much more long-lasting.

11 slow living hobbies that lean into a calmer rhythm

The best slow living hobbies are ones that are done intentionally

2. Thrifting

3. grow your own, 4. knitting, 6. indoor gardening, 8. sewing and crafting, 9. birdwatching, 10. walking, 11. painting.

"The attention to detail required for these hobbies requires us to bring our focus into the present moment. We can then find ourselves fully immersed in the task, enjoying the process - instead of rushing to complete it."

Here's some to explore...

1. Journaling

Journaling about how you feel offers an array of benefits, from easing stress to sparking self-discovery and boosting mindfulness.

According to a study conducted by the University of Rochester , journaling helps control your symptoms and improve your mood by helping you prioritise problems, fears, and concerns. It also helps you to track any symptoms day-to-day and provides opportunities to identify negative thoughts.

Journaling is a wonderful slow living hobby as it takes time, helping us to reflect, think and be. You could jot down your thoughts in a notebook or consider a gratitude journal, like this one from Papier .

Thrifting takes a slower, more mindful approach to fashion and shopping. It invites us to buy less and shop more responsibly.

"A great hobby for your mind and conscience is second-hand shopping. Increasingly popular thanks to its eco-friendly benefits, it allows you to immerse yourself in the moment," Catharina Björkman, Scandi lifestyle expert at Contura , tells us.

"Search for local markets or vintage shops and spend an hour combing through stock for the perfect find. Starting a collection is a meaningful way to shop with a purpose and also stops you from picking up too many unnecessary knick-knacks."

Gardening is a slow and intentional hobby that enables you to connect with nature and the environment. The benefits of growing your own produce include reduced stress levels and better mental wellbeing, as well as increased self-sufficiency and more control over what you eat and how it's grown.

"Searches on Houzz for the term 'vegetable garden' are up by 61% this year," says Amanda Pollard, senior editor, houzz.co.uk . "It's widely reported that spending time in nature can have great therapeutic benefits, plus the satisfaction of seeing – and eating – the fruits of your labour means this hobby can be especially satisfying."

Knitting is often seen as a meditative and calming activity. Elena Lo Presti, the director of Craft Forward , explains why: "I've discovered firsthand how knitting can be a peaceful break in the middle of the chaos of daily life. It's truly magical how the rhythmic motion of the needles and the gentle touch of yarn can transport us to a place of calm and mindfulness.

"I think knitting, especially when done in a group, has the power to unlock more than a simple skill," adds Elena. "It is always refreshing to witness the positive impact knitting has on mental wellbeing, instilling a sense of accomplishment and inspiring a slower, more intentional way of living."

Whether it's fact or fiction, reading encourages us to move away from screens and escape the stresses of daily life. Slow living isn't about losing time by going slowly; it's about gaining time by doing things that are most important to us.

"A slower pace of life can often help us to feel more settled, less anxious and less overwhelmed. It can also help to reduce physical symptoms of stress – we might feel less restless , for example, or a reduced sense of tension," adds Eloise.

plants in the kitchen

" Creating a living wall adds freshness to any room and works for nature lovers who don't have access to a garden or green space," says Catharina. "From putting the wall together to tending to it, creating and maintaining a living wall will allow you to be fully in the moment.

"Enjoy the process of watering each plant every few days, trimming dead leaves, giving plant feed and repotting as necessary. A thriving plant provides a sense of achievement and joy and will be sure to dispel any feelings of stress."

"Learning new skills in the kitchen is always nice way to relax and means you can literally eat the fruits of your labour," says Catharina. "Baking, cooking and mixology are wonderful hobbies as they can be shared with friends and family, but remember, the point isn't to achieve perfection, but to get creative, enjoy the ritual, and distract yourself from daily stresses."

person sewing

"Homeowners may be turning to mindful activities like sewing and crafting as a break from today's fast-paced and increasingly digital world," explains Amanda, who has seen a significant increase in searches related to hobbies on the site.

"Searches for 'sewing room' were up by more than 2.5 times in the first three months of this year, compared to the same period last year, and 'workshop' and 'craft room' both saw a steep increase in searches."

Other craft-led slow hobbies to try include colouring , soap making , candle making , scrapbooking and origami.

bird in the garden uk

The mental health benefits of birdwatching are profound. According to Care UK , bird spotting can be a meditative activity, providing people with the opportunity to spend time in a quiet place without any distractions. Especially for those living with dementia, listening to birdsong has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

"Birdwatching has a meditative quality that is commonplace in slow-living hobbies," an RSPB spokesperson tells us. "While there's never any guarantee that you'll spot the bird you're looking for, you're certain to spot something, be it a bird, a beetle, or a delicate carpet of bluebells."

"Birdwatching, as well as the benefits it can yield for mood and well-being, is highly accessible to people of all ages."

new forest, forest, woods, pines

Wandering through woodlands or forests has the power to uplift our mood and change perspectives. "Walking is an obvious slow living hobby and has many benefits," Karen Liebenguth, from Green Space Coaching , explains.

"Other than helping to keep us fit, being outdoors in nature is great for reducing stress levels, lowering the heart rate and blood pressure, and making us feel more relaxed, grounded and confident. Spending time in nature also helps to strengthen our immune system, improves our mood and reduces feelings of isolation."

And finally, there's never been a better time to reach for the paintbrush. "The act of painting requires concentration, however it is such a pleasurable experience. This is what makes it a perfect slow living hobby," says fine artist, Jane Lloyd .

"The focus provides a state of mindfulness, it slows down the mental chatter and allows a relaxing feeling to fill your mind freeing you from stress and worry. Painting is also a creative act which allows you to express yourself, your thoughts and emotions."

Visiting Oranienbaum and Lomonosov

Oranienbaum is perhaps the least visited of St. Petersburg's suburban palaces, despite the rich and unique treasures it has to offer. This can partly be attributed to the decades of neglect that have left most of the buildings in critical condition and allowed the park to be overrun by nature. Thankfully, the estate has now come under the auspices of Peterhof's management, and a massive renovation programme is already underway. For the next several years, however, it will be necessary to check which parts of the park and which buildings are currently open to the public.

Oranienbaum is only 12km along the coast from Peterhof, so it is possible for those with some stamina to combine the two in a single daytrip. A marshrutka minibus (K-348) connects the two estates. From St. Petersburg it is possible to take a minibus (K-300) from Avtovo Metro Station, or suburban trains from Baltiskiy Station. Either way, the journey takes a little under one hour.

The Birth of Saint Petersburg Russia, or “Muscovy” as it was often called, had rarely been considered a part of Europe before the reign of Czar Peter I (Piotr Alexeievich), known as Peter the Great (r. 1682–1725). His supremacy marked the beginning of the country’s “Westernization,” whereby the political, economic, and cultural norms of the western European monarchies would become the basis for “civilizing” Russia. A radical transformation was needed to launch Russia into the modern world, a transformation later called the Petrine Revolution. The young czar, feeling oppressed by the medieval traditions and ecclesiastical patriarchy of seventeenth-century Moscow, wanted to Westernize Russia in a hurry, defying the sluggish pace of history.

Saint Petersburg was born on May 16, 1703 (May 5 by the old Julian Russian calendar). On that day, on a small island on the north bank of the Neva River, Peter cut two pieces of turf and placed them cross-wise. The setting was inauspicious. The area was a swamp that remained frozen from early November to March, with an annual average of 104 days of rain and 74 days of snow. The army, under the command of Alexander Menshikov ( 1996.7 ), had conquered the region shortly before. To show his gratitude, the czar later appointed Menshikov the first governor-general of Saint Petersburg. The fortification of the territory kept the Swedish enemy at bay and secured for Russia permanent access to the Baltic Sea. The partially ice-free harbor would be crucial to further economic development. All buildings on the site were erected on wooden poles driven into the marshy, unstable ground. Stones were a rare commodity in Russia, and about as valuable as precious metals.

The Dutch name “Piterburkh” (later changed to the German version, “Petersburg”) embodied the czar’s fascination with Holland and its small-scale urban architecture. He disliked patriarchal court ceremony and felt at ease in the bourgeois domestic life that he experienced during his travels throughout Europe on “the Great Embassy” (1697–98). However, the primary purpose of this voyage was to acquire firsthand knowledge of shipbuilding—his personal passion—and to learn about progressive techniques and Western ideas.

The victory over the Swedish army at Poltava in June 1709 elevated Russia to the rank of a European power, no longer to be ignored. Peter triumphed: “Now with God’s help the final stone in the foundation of Saint Petersburg has been laid.” By 1717, the city’s population of about 8,000 had tripled, and grew to around 40,000 by the time of Peter’s death in 1725. Saint Petersburg had become the commercial, industrial, administrative, and residential “metropolis” of Russia. By the 1790s, it had surpassed Moscow as the empire’s largest urban vicinity and was hailed as the “Venice of the North,” an allusion to the waterway system around the local “Grand Canal,” the Neva River.

Peter the Great’s Successors The short reign of Peter’s second wife, Empress Catherine I (r. 1725–27), who depended on her long-time favorite Menshikov, saw the reinstatement of the luxurious habits of the former imperial household. The archaic and ostentatious court display in the Byzantine tradition  that Peter had so despised was now to be restored under the pretext of glorifying his legacy. Enormous sums of money were lavished on foreign luxury items, demonstrating the court’s new international status and its observance of western European manners ( 68.141.133 ).

During the reigns of Empress Anna Ioannovna (r. 1730–40), niece of Peter I ( 1982.60.330a,b ), and her successor Elizabeth (Elizaveta Petrovna, r. 1741–62; 1978.554.2 ), Peter’s daughter, Saint Petersburg was transformed into a Baroque extravaganza through the talents of architect Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli (1700–1771) and other Western and Russian artisans. Foreign powers began to recognize Russia’s importance and competed for closer diplomatic relations. Foreign immigrants increased much faster than the local population, as scholars, craftsmen, artisans, and specialists of all kinds flocked to the country, and especially to Saint Petersburg ( 65.47 ; 1982.60.172,.173 ; 1995.327 ).

Catherine the Great (r. 1762–96) In a coup d’état assisted by the five Orloff brothers ( 33.165.2a–c ; 48.187.386,.387 ), Catherine II overthrew her husband, the ill-fated Peter III (r. 1762) and became empress. Catherine saw herself as the political heir of Peter the Great. A German-born princess of Anhalt-Zerbst who, after her marriage, became more Russian than any native, Catherine aimed at completing Peter’s legacy ( 52.189.11 ; 48.73.1 ). Having lived in isolation in the shadow of Elizabeth I since her marriage to the grand duke in 1745, the time had come to satisfy her thirst for life and her insatiable quest for culture and international recognition. An admirer of the Enlightenment and devoted aficionada of Voltaire’s writings, Catherine stimulated his cult in Russia ( 1972.61 ). In response, the French philosopher dedicated a poem to the czarina; her reply, dated October 15, 1763, initiated a correspondence that influenced the empress on many matters until Voltaire’s death in 1778. The hothouse cultural climate of Saint Petersburg during Catherine’s reign can be compared to the artistic and intellectual ferment in New York City in the second half of the twentieth century.

Catherine’s desire to enhance her fame and her claim to the throne was immortalized by her own witty play on words in Latin: “Petro Primo / Catharina Secunda” (To Peter the First / from Catherine the Second). This she had inscribed on the vast lump of granite in the form of a wave supporting the Bronze Horseman on the banks of the Neva in front of Saint Isaac’s Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. This triple-lifesize equestrian figure of Peter the Great took the French sculptor Falconet twelve years to complete, until it was finally cast—after three attempts—in 1782.

Catherine had military expansion plans for Russia and a cultural vision for its capital Saint Petersburg. Above all, she knew how to attract devoted supporters. Only nine days after the overthrow of her husband, Catherine wrote to Denis Diderot, offering to print his famous Encyclopédie , which had been banned in France. Catherine recognized the power of art to demonstrate political and social maturity. She acquired entire collections of painting ( Watteau , for example), sculpture, and objects. The empress avoided anything that could be called mediocre or small. With the help of sophisticated advisors, such as Prince Dmitrii Golitsyn, her ambassador in Paris, Denis Diderot, Falconet, and the illustrious Baron Friedrich Melchior von Grimm, the empress assembled the core of today’s State Hermitage Museum. Catherine favored luxury goods from all over Europe ( 33.165.2a–c ; 48.187.386,.387 ; 17.190.1158 ). She commissioned Sèvres porcelain and Wedgwood pottery as well as hundreds of pieces of ingeniously conceived furniture from the German manufactory of David Roentgen in Neuwied ( 48.73.1 ). Furthermore, she encouraged and supported Russian enterprises and craftsmen, like local silversmiths ( 47.51.1–.5 ; 1981.367.1,.2 ) and the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory ( 1982.60.171 ; 1982.60.177,.178 ; 1982.60.175 ), as well as privately owned manufactories ( 1982.60.158 ). Catherine especially liked the sparkling decorative products of the Tula armory steel workshop ( 2002.115 ), genuine Russian art forms with a fairy-tale-like appearance, and in 1775 merged her large collection of Tula objects with the imperial crown jewels in a newly constructed gallery at the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg.

Catherine’s son and successor Paul I (Pavel Petrovich, r. 1796–1801) disliked his mother and her aesthetic sensibility ( 1998.13.1,.2 ). As grand duke, he had spent most of his time with his second wife Maria Feodorovna ( 1999.525 ) outside of Saint Petersburg, in Gatchina Palace and Pavlovsk Palace.
