राष्ट्रीय विज्ञान शिक्षा एवं अनुसंधान संस्थान परमाणु ऊर्जा विभाग, भारत सरकार का एक स्वयंशासित संस्थान, national institute of science education and research an autonomous institute under dae, govt. of india, integrated 5-year msc programme.

The admissions for the Integrated 5-year Master's Programme are conducted via National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) , the pan-India test that NISER and CEBS, Mumbai jointly conduct for intake of students into the flagship Integrated MSc programme of these institutions. 2-year MSc Programme in 'Medical & Radiological Physics' + 1 year internship

The admissions for the 2-year Master's Programme are done via JAM/ JEST followed by written test and/or interview. More details can be found on the CMRP website. The curriculum includes 1 year mandatory internship in collaborating hospitals after completion of 2-year course.

PhD & Integrated PhD Programmes

The admissions to the PhD programme & Integrated MSc+PhD programme at NISER are conducted in various steps. First step involves an open call by the institute, followed by shortlisting based on the eligibility criteria of the respective schools and/or scores in the national examinations such as CSIR-UGC-NET/ GATE/ JEST/ GPAT/ DBT/ ICMR/ JGEEBILS . This is followed by written tests and/or interviews conducted by respective schools. Each school has different eligibility criteria for PhD admissions. The details of the current call for the NISER PhD admissions can be found in the announcement section (if announced).

• PhD programme has two intakes per academic year - Summer [July] and Winter [January] sessions.
• All other programmes have single intake per academic year [July-August].
• The certificates are awarded by Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Mumbai.

Admission to Ph.D. Programme - January 2024

Currently, IISER Berhampur offers Ph.D. programme in Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences disciplines. Students with a Master's degree or equivalent in Biology, Chemistry, EES, Mathematics, and Physics OR in any relevant interdisciplinary area closely related to the mainstream are encouraged to apply for Ph.D. programme.

Bhubaneswar: The city-based Rama Devi Women’s (RDW) University has invited applications for admission to PhD programmes.

Criteria For Applicants

According to a university release, the aspiring candidates should have qualified in UGC-NET/JRF, CSIR-NET/JRF, GATE or INSPIRE Fellowship, National Fellowship for SC/ST, National Fellowship for OBC candidates or any other fellowship conducted at national level.

University 1 st rank holders at PG level examinations can also apply for the PhD programmes.

Candidates who have completed their Pre-PhD course work or possess an MPhil degree can also apply for the programme.

Application Details

The application form will be available on the RDW University website at www.rdwuniversity.nic.in from December 23, 2020.

The duly filled application, required fee along with relevant documents should reach the Chairperson, PG Council by post on or before January 7, 2021, the release said.

Recognizing the importance of research and innovation in the creation of knowledge and livelihoods, as well as achieving global excellence in the new millennium, the Odisha University Research and Innovation Incentivisation Plan ( OURIIP)  proposes a full-time Research Fellowship for the scholars in Odisha’s state universities by offering five research scholarships of Rs. 15000/- per month in each subject for five years or until completion of a Ph.D., whichever comes first. It is recommended that OURIIP Research Fellowship be awarded in 35 master’s level topics.

About OURIIP Research Fellowship 2024

Under the Odisha University Research and Innovation Incentivisation Plan, the state government has provided seed cash to young faculty members to do innovative and high-quality research. Instead of the current Rs-5 lakh in initial money, the government would offer Rs-7 lakh to chosen researchers. According to sources, the Odisha State Higher Education Council, which is implementing the University Research and Innovation Incentivisation plan, said Rs-5 lakh was not enough for researchers to conduct two-year rigorous research projects. After hearing the researchers’ pleas and reviewing their requests, the state government increased the seed funding amount. 

According to the plan, any faculty members with a degree and working in a regular capacity in a state public University and college under the higher education department or the skill development and technical Education Department can apply for seed funding with an appropriate and innovative research proposal.

Key Highlights of OURIIP Research Fellowship

Objective of OURIIP Research Fellowship

The plan aims to fill the deficit in full-time research scholars at Odisha’s state institutions by offering five research scholarships of Rs. 15000/- per month in each field for five years or until completion of a Ph.D., whichever comes first. The state government has provided seed cash to young faculty members to do innovative and high-quality research. This is predict that to boost the number of high-quality research publications published each year by at least 150. Young professors will encourage to apply for a seed award. 

Benefits of OURIIP Research Fellowship

The selected researchers and students will receive the following amount under the fellowship:

• The government would pay Rs-7 lakh in initial financing to chosen researchers under the Odisha University Research and Innovation Incentivisation Plan, instead of the current Rs-5 lakh.
• Candidates who pass the NET test will get a monthly stipend of Rs 15000, with a contingency of Rs 25000 per year for topics requiring laboratory work and Rs 15000 per month for subjects requiring no laboratory work. Each subject has a maximum of five fellowships available.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the OURIIP Research Fellowship the applicants must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

• Candidates under the age of 35 who have passed the NET are consider to have met the scholarship’s minimal qualifying requirements.
• Any faculty member under 45 years of age with a PhD degree who works in a regular capacity in a state-published university or college under the high education department or the skill development and technical education department can apply for seed financing with a creative resource proposal.
• For the fellowship to renew, the candidate must finish his job as a full-time scholar at any state university in Odisha and produce high-quality articles in SCI journals.
• In order to achieve equitable targets, 40 percent of fellowships will be earmark for female scholars. Other central systems are available to SC and ST.

The candidates who want to appear under the fellowship should apply by following the given instructions:

• Under OURIIP Research Fellowship the researchers who want to apply under the fellowship should submit their research proposal which contains all the necessary details which are required for the selection such as- about their NET exam score, the area of education, University or college where they completed the Post Graduation, about their laboratory work, about their research publications or research papers, and much more details. 
• If your research proposal is innovative and impressive then the chances of selection will be increased.

Selection Process

According to Asoka Kumar Das, Vice Chairman of OSHEC, the Odisha University Research and Innovation incentivization Plan Research Fellowship 2024, “The researchers would be chosen on the basis of their research ideas, with the best among them being chosen. A total of 40 creative research projects will be chosen from all of the submissions and will receive seed money “.

Odisha’s Purnati Khuntia bags Rowland Fellowship from Harvard University

A research scholar from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Hyderabad, Purnati Khuntia has bagged the prestigious Rowland Fellowship from the Rowland Institute at Harvard, USA. The Fellowship offers a personal research lab immediately after PhD besides other benefits.

Moreover, a Rowland fellow receives start-up funding with an annual budget starting at $225,000 for general operations that is inclusive of lab supplies, travel, and personnel hiring such as postdoctoral fellows or undergraduates.

Khuntia, a resident of Hyderabad , shared about her research domain. “As a postdoctoral researcher in Tamal’s laboratory, I am exploring the dynamics of hair follicle morphogenesis in mouse embryonic skin.”

Apart from the Rowland Fellowship, she also applied for the Human Frontier Science Program Long Term Fellowship (HFSP-LTF) and was awarded the same for another postdoctoral project on molecular mechanisms and tissue mechanics driving Spinal Cord regeneration.

In an interview with indianexpress.com , the 30-year-old woman from Odisha shares her research experience and journey so far.

Khuntia got interested in research while pursuing her undergraduate microbiology program at Delhi University. Recalling a memory that incited her research skill she said, “My earliest memory of this fascination is observing Hibiscus pollen germinating in a glucose solution. What appeared as dust to the naked eye came to life and grew under the microscope. During my BSc in Microbiology, this curiosity deepened as I discovered how organisms invisible to the naked eye exhibit so many intriguing behaviours.”

However, her interest in biology was discovered during her school days by her teacher. “After school, I found inspiration in cell biology textbooks, as well as from teachers and researchers at South Campus, Delhi University. I feel fortunate to have been surrounded by individuals who cultivated a deep interest in me to understand life under the microscope.”

Female Participation in STEM amid marriage pressure

When asked about female participation in STEM, the research scholar said as women moves to higher education, their participation dips. “After school, each educational advance I have made, BSc, MSc, and even during my PhD, there were always more women than men. I have always experienced more female participation in biology. However, the women participation goes down after PhD, in faculty positions, conference participation, or research grants recipients,” she said.

Khuntia considers herself lucky as her parents like her enthusiasm for science and encourage her pursuit of it. “My siblings are probably subjected to more family pressure than me. Other relatives keep asking me about marriage plans, I just tell them I have better things to do, to keep them off my back. And I keep hearing the more you educate your daughters, the more difficult it will be to find a suitable partner,” she said.

Indian students prefer foreign countries for research

According to the Ministry of External Affairs 2022 data, 1.50 lakh Indian students went abroad for higher education to pursue a PhD . When we asked what could be the reason, she said, “It takes considerably less time to complete PhD in European countries. There are also many external grants available for researchers abroad. Indian PhD students have limited funding options and poor industry collaborations along with irregular fellowship. In addition, PhD students abroad get better exposure to career options outside academia. The lifestyle and the work-life balance in foreign countries also appeal a lot to students.”

Process, documents to apply for the Rowland Fellowship

A person who is interested in applying for the Rowland Fellowship should be in the process of completing his or her PhD or should have received it after May 2023. The research for the PhD should be focused on any field of science or engineering, including but not limited to physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and neuroscience. Students have to submit a 250-word elevator pitch describing research goals for a general audience, a three-page statement of research, a curriculum vitae (CV), and a one-page vision statement outlining their plan to establish a productive and supportive lab culture, incorporating personal values and academic experiences and letter of recommendations, read the website.
