– New Jeans was under criticism after releasing their song “Cookie” because the term possesses an inappropriate innuendo in Western culture and all New Jeans members were minors. ADOR denied the accusation and said that the song had a completely different meaning and concept. – The group’s director, Min Hee Jin, is also notorious among fans for sexualizing underaged idols and was accused of glamorizing pedophilia which she denied in an interview. She was also under fire as she had multiple photos of underaged girls half-naked on her Instagram and studio walls. – In January 2023, Danielle was under criticism for mistakenly writing “Chinese New Year” instead of “Lunar New Year” in her Twitter post which she deleted immediately. She later apologized through the New Jeans Instagram account.

– They won the Guinness World Record for “the fastest K-pop group to reach 1 billion Spotify streams” in 2023.

Philanthropy

– NewJeans and ADOR pledged to donate part of the group’s album sales profits to The Snail of Love charity in December 2022 which aims to support cochlear implant surgery and speech therapy for the hearing-impaired. – In February 2023, NewJeans and ADOR donated ₩200 million to the World Food Programme to assist the victims of the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake.

K-Pop Fans Love NewJeans Because Of This 1 Special Skill

They're quickly blowing up.

HYBE is the company behind mega K-pop groups like BTS , TXT , and ENHYPEN . Now, they’ve added another need-to-know artist to their eclectic roster: NewJeans. The girl group, signed to HYBE’s independent label ADOR, made their debut in July 2022 with their flirty single “Attention,” which appears on their self-titled EP. NewJeans’ rollout has been a thrilling sight to see, as the group knows how to create nostalgic, genre-fusing bops without sounding too dated.

The members of NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein) are teenagers, and that youthfulness can be heard in their lyrics fawning over first crushes and friendships. Take their soft launch, “Attention,” a minimalist R&B hit about craving attention from your crush. Though the lyrics are directed towards a mystery boy, the track’s production definitely caters to listeners. This release is intentionally catchy with those buttery, uptempo drums that steadily build around the group’s distinct vocals.

In some parts, the group’s flow sounds like a scaled-back version of Justin Timberlake’s “Señorita,” especially in that rhythmic pre-chorus . A bop influencing another bop? That’s gold.

NewJeans upped the ante with their self-titled EP, which includes cuts like “Hype Boy,” “Cookie,” and “Hurt.” Steadily building on their catchy flare, the entire project flows like an R&B-meets-modern-chill-pop dream, and sees songwriting credits from several of the members.

According to Danielle in a January 2023 interview with Nylon, their team encourages them to write their own lyrics . “Through these [lyric-writing opportunities], I feel we all have grown an interest towards it, and each member really has their own unique story to tell and interpretation for each song,” she said.

Her words echo that of Haerin, who told NME in January how incredible it’s been to write their feelings into a tune and have fans resonate with them. “I’ve been practicing songwriting ever since our debut, so I want to continue to try and build experience in that,” she said. “I think it is very meaningful, the fact that our message could inspire people and evoke emotions.”

That’s not to say their songwriting journey hasn’t been without its struggles. For the youngest member, Hyein, she’s still learning how to translate her emotions on paper. “It’s really much harder than I thought, to express my emotions and incorporate those emotions into the music,” she said.

The group’s debut is just one of many ways NewJeans is unique. As Vice reports, Baltimore Club sounds typically use “hard-and-heavy bass drum patterns” that pairs well with brisk, hyped singing. However, on “Ditto,” the members stick to their soft vocals and occasionally slip in breathy harmonies to bridge verses together.

Meanwhile, “OMG” is their second successful dive into minimalist R&B. The arrangement — which is more upbeat than “Ditto” — starts with a soft melody before mixing trap rhythms. This awing detour works well for NewJeans, as they adopt a more winking, rap-singing cadence on this track.

Since an explosive start upon entering the K-pop scene less than two years ago, NewJeans has quickly set the charts ablaze with their instant No. 1 debut single “Attention” to topping the Billboard 200 with their Get Up EP last year. The girl group’s official Japanese debut is also making a significant impact, showing indeed “Supernatural” success for their first foray into the J-pop market.

Officially released worldwide on June 21, Supernatural is NewJeans’ latest double single album, including the tracks “Supernatural” and “Right Now,” to signify their official debut in Japan. Ahead of the new music, the quintet was already bringing buzz to the release by collaborating with some of Japan’s most influential cultural figures like famous contemporary artist Takashi Murakami (who mixed his iconic rainbow flower designs with NewJeans iconography) and pioneering musician/streetwear designer Hiroshi Fujiwara (who crafted a line of NewJeans items).

Like previous singles from the outfit that reinvigorated popular ‘90s and ‘00s genres like harmony-heavy R&B, Baltimore club beats and UK garage styles, “Supernatural” lets the girls take on New Jack Swing. The track incorporates a bridge from a 2009 release by Japanese singer Manami titled “Back of My Mind,” written and produced by Pharrell Williams. Recalling some of his iconic early work on tracks like SWV’s “Right Here (Human Nature Remix),” Pharrell’s ad-libs throughout add a nostalgic touch to let NewJeans honor the past but do so in a creative way that can also uniquely connect to Japanese listeners. Also different from other J-pop releases: “Supernatural” includes a mix of Japanese, English and Korean lyrics throughout the track.

Remarkably, “Supernatural” was also able to impact South Korea’s top streaming platform, Melon, reportedly becoming the highest-charting J-pop song in the Melon TOP100’s history when it entered the Top 40 of the chart.

Supernatural ’s B-side track “Right Now” saw its music video release on June 16, 2024, with the visual already earning more than 10 million views in its first 10 days out. The track has been used in different advertisements ahead of the release of Supernatural .

While NewJeans has been impacting the global market since debut, the release of Supernatural marks NewJeans’ official debut in Japan, the second-largest music industry in the world after the United States. To coincide with the release, NewJeans is appearing on different local television shows and holding an official fan meeting, named “Bunnies Camp 2024 Tokyo Dome,” coming to the massive Tokyo Dome on June 26 and 27.

In a press release statement, NewJeans’ HANNI said, “We are making our Japanese debut in hopes of meeting more of our fans, Bunnies, and to showcase a fresh perspective on our music as NewJeans.” HYEIN added, “We’ll work hard to create fun memories together!”

Despite a high-profile power struggle between NewJeans’ label CEO, Min Hee-jin of ADOR, and the label’s parent company, HYBE, the continuously high interest in the girl group among fans and top pop-culture names shows the group’s sustained impact. In a previous statement, HYBE had shared that despite its conflict with CEO Min, the entertainment company will “continue to provide attentive mental and emotional care to the company’s artist NewJeans and best support for their upcoming comeback.”

History [ ]

Minji was born Kim Min-ji on May 7, 2004 in Chuncheon, Gangwon, South Korea. During her elementary school years, she learned English before studying abroad in Canada for a few months. [3]

In 2017, Minji became a trainee under Source Music for four and a half years.

2019–2021: PLUS GLOBAL AUDITION & BTS "Permission to Dance" MV Appearance [ ]

Minji's first appearance was in the videos titled "PLUS GLOBAL AUDITION #THE_GIRL 1" [4] and "PLUS GLOBAL AUDITION #THE_GIRL 2" [5] both uploaded on Sep 3, 2019.

Later on, Minji and Hanni both made appearances in BTS's music video "Permission to Dance" on July 8, 2021 [6]

2022: Debut [ ]

Minji was officially revealed as a member of NewJeans on July 22, 2022 with the release of the " Attention " MV.

• She can speak English, Korean and Japanese, but zones out if others speak in English a lot.
• She likes to read books, especially mystery novels.

• She dislikes jump scares.
• Minji used to dislike movie theaters but now likes them thanks to Hanni. They both go to watch movies pretty often.
