Opposites Attracting

John Westwig delivers a Sunday puzzle that’s simply dazzling.

A person is jogging next to the East River as a full moon rises.

By Caitlin Lovinger

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

SUNDAY PUZZLE — John Westwig is a software engineer in Seattle; he got into crosswords when he was very young, solving Games magazine puzzles on car trips with his family. Constructing came soon after.

He sold his first puzzle to The Times in 2015, when he was 17. This is his eighth grid and his Sunday debut. “Lots of friends do the Times puzzle,” John writes, “but most complain that mine are too hard.”

This has to be easily the most grueling fill for a Sunday crossword in my recent memory, including a few themeless grids, but I’m not complaining! A few morsels are a little too crunchy, but they’re vastly outnumbered by flawless wordplay. The theme shines on its own, but this puzzle as a whole is a great workout.

Today’s Theme

There are nine pun entries in this theme set: 22-, 24-, 38-, 67-, 91-, 109- and 112-Across, and 37- and 41-Down. Their clues are riddles; all can be answered by oxymoronic terms that end with “-ing,” which makes the title of the puzzle, “Opposites Attracting,” perfectly apt.

That clarity doesn’t make solving a cakewalk, but it does invite guesses; once I had the gist, I was able to deduce a couple of answers directly from their clues. The entries are all wildly clever, as well.

The first clue I completed was 24-Across, “‘I wish I were under four feet tall,’ e.g.?” With lots of help from crossing down entries, I pieced together SHORT LONGING. Then I got 41-Down, “Compliment for a lexicographer?,” which solves to NICE MEANING. SHORT and LONG, NICE and MEAN; this pattern, two antonyms, holds up throughout.

Some of the examples are quite funny. 112-Across, “Title of an essay by a hit man?,” solves to ON OFFING, as in murder for hire . I thought of “On Writing,” by Stephen King, and “On Death and Dying,” by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, and had a grim chuckle. 22-Across is the puzzle’s mirror image to ON OFFING; its clue is “Event at a hot new club?,” or IN OUTING. This also tickled me (and brought to mind Saturday Night Live’s Stefon ).

One of the theme clues that I found more difficult became another favorite. I first read 67-Across, “Slinky?,” as an adjective and not a noun. It turns out to be a toy that is, by definition, a SPRING FALLING.

Tricky Clues

1A. Where to begin? Oh, how about the first clue in the puzzle, “Tiny trunks.” Baby elephants ? Stuart Little’s car ? Of course not, not in this puzzle: This is a reference to what they call a “ budgie smuggler ” in Australia, a SPEEDO. (This entry hit play on a particular old song in my cranium called “ Tangerine Speedo .” )

57A. This “Secret service member?” has a perilous responsibility indeed: protecting the privacy of his or her nuptials, as an ELOPER.

86A. I faced dueling misdirects down in the southwest corner of this grid. “Kicks down the road” had to be “puts off,” right? It took ages to figure out PUNTS ON (with no help from 75D, I might add).

10D. The last time a puzzle ran with this entry was 1986. Although it is logical, it’s unfamiliar to me and I needed all its crossing letters. An “Earthling, in sci-fi” here is a TERRAN, a term that seems to be common in the “Star Trek” lexicon .

14D. “Considerably large, in Appalachian dialect” solves to a debut entry with which I’m familiar, but whose first word I always thought of as an adverb like “very.” RIGHT SMART specifically involves size, or a large amount, and it can even be a noun, used for anything from a quantity of land to someone’s knowledge .

16D. This clue belongs in the logic section of an LSAT , assuming that I’ve got it right. “One of two for six of VIII?” is a ridiculously clever wink at King Henry VIII and his wives: Katherine of Aragon, ANNE Boleyn, Jane Seymour, ANNE of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr.

75D. This is a brutal misdirect. First of all, “Old timer” made me think of coots and codgers, before I got a few crossing letters and realized this was an antique device used to tell time, an “hourglass.” It felt like days before the right answer surfaced, a term for the same object: a SANDGLASS.

81D. Here’s another silly pun that caught silly me unawares. “Stop hiding behind?” is MOON, because when you MOON someone, you stop hiding your behind (behind your SPEEDO, for example).

Constructor Notes

This puzzle has an interesting property: I’ve “stolen” one of the theme answers from another puzzle with an entirely different theme ! Tom McCoy adds “AL” to common phrases, so “Spring Fling” becomes “Spring F(al)ling.” People who remember these sorts of things: Let me know if this has happened before! In all honesty, I haven’t been spending much time making puzzles recently; instead, I’m focusing my efforts on species preservation. The great Spanish oso (Latin: Ursus utilis) has been on the brink of extinction for many years and I’m working with a crack team of cruciverbal conservationists to reintroduce as many as we can to the wild before it’s too late. Speaking of, I haven’t seen any ernes around recently … sure is weird.
