Andreas Packman® Veggie Restaurant, LLC is a private business that is solely owned and financed by Andreas Packman and his immediate family members. They do not intend to welcome any external business partners which is why he has decided to restrict the sourcing of the start – up capital to 3 major sources.

These are the areas we intend generating our start – up capital;

  • Generate part of the start – up capital from personal savings
  • Source for soft loans from family members and friends
  • Apply for loan from my Bank

N.B: We have been able to generate about $200,000 ( Personal savings $100,000 and soft loan from family members $50,000 ) and we are at the final stages of obtaining a loan facility of $300,000 from our bank. All the papers and document have been signed and submitted, the loan has been approved and any moment from now our account will be credited with the amount.

We know that one of the ways of gaining approval and winning customers over is to retail our vegetable inspired meals, coffees and soft drinks a little bit cheaper than what is obtainable in the market and we are well prepared to survive on lower profit margin for a while.

Our company’s corporate culture is designed to drive our business to greater heights and training and retraining of our workforce is at the top burner.

As a matter of fact, profit-sharing arrangement will be made available to all our management staff and it will be based on their performance for a period of three years or more. When it comes to vegan business ideas, a lot has changed since I first published this post in 2016. At the time, I was frustrated with the lack of vegan-friendly products available. 

I was confused as to why there weren’t better dairy-free ice creams or vegan fashion brands that didn’t suck. 

Well, fortunately, the market caught on, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the progress made in these areas. My local supermarket freezer is now filled with vegan ice creams and there’s an explosion of ethical fashion labels paving the way.

I used to wonder how amazing it would be if there was a vegan-friendly rival to McDonald’s. Now, even Hungary Jack’s (Burger King) and Domino’s offer vegan options. Who would have thought!?

My wife Masa and I have travelled the world and have seen vegan malls , nightclubs, vegan Japanese restaurants and world-class vegan pizzerias . We’re even proud owners of puffy winter jackets with remarkably no bird feathers .

While we should take a moment to celebrate this entrepreneurial progress, there’s still a lot of work to be done. 

Vegan business ideas just keep on coming

I’ve had countless business ideas since becoming vegan, but with the demanding commitment of The Minimalist Vegan, I can only dream of these concepts, without the capacity to execute on them.

So in this post, I’m sharing 45 vegan business opportunities that could help any marketplace. I’ve updated this article to include more relevant ideas to match the current times. 

My hope is that you can bring these ideas to life and shift the demand for ethical products and services.

These ideas are by no means revolutionary, but they do seem to be missing in many marketplaces. 

We’ve also tried to include ideas that are not too large-scale and intimidating to start with. It’s always best to start a small and validated vegan business before investing more capital. 

Keep in mind we live in Tasmania, Australia, so maybe where you live there is much more (or less) to choose from.

Cosmetics has always been a massive industry, and the vegan segment of the market is benefiting. It’s predicted that the global vegan cosmetics market will be worth 27 billion by 2027! 

Mindful consumers want cruelty-free, sustainable, organic beauty products without comprising on quality. At the end of the day, you need deodorants that prevent odour, makeup that enhances, skincare that helps your cells thrive.

It’s just that vegan companies prefer to sell on Amazon, although their products are lost among products of dubious quality. Hi Nina, I can relate to the emotional rollercoaster of being a vegan entrepreneur or just a business person in general. I’ve gone into debt backing an idea that didn’t resonate with the market and had to learn from the experience. It’s worth taking a step back and seeing if you can get on 20 calls with prospective customers and suppliers to understand what would get them excited about a vegan marketplace, more importantly, what would motivate them to participate and transact.

I have been vegan for over 15 + years now and I am a private chef I had to cook regular foods and always offered vegan foods. I decided a year ago that I could not cook regular food and offered just vegan food. But it flopped and I had no clients at all so now I have to close as I cannot afford to stay open anymore. I live in the Algarve, Portugal but we are so behind here on vegan food and movement it takes a long time. There is a few vegan restaurants in my area and they small and do well. I wanted to start a small vegan café but due to the current climate it is so hard to do anything. I am lost what to do next now my brain is blank and I do not know what my next venture could be plus I have very little money to do anything.

Hi Massimiliano, I’m just catching up on the comments. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a tough go at trying to provide vegan food options in your area. It’s promising that some vegan restaurants are seeing success, meaning it’s possible to start a sustainable plant-based food business. With little capital and the current climate, I’d suggest you spend time honing the perfect menu and getting brutally honest feedback from friends and family. A good test to see if they love your food is to see if they naturally request a recipe or ask if you can make it again for them.

I’m not sure what the restrictions are like in Algarve at the moment, but if possible, once you’ve found a winning menu, you could run a small stand at your local markets to get more feedback and build your customer base. But, again, if people aren’t ordering, you need to change your menu until they request your food.

Your heart is in the right place, and I hope you can find the strength to keep on grinding.

Hi Federico, I don’t know much about creating a vegan protein powder. If I were researching, I’d look for examples of successful non-vegan protein powders. First, go to their about page and see if you can find the name of the founder. Then search the founder in Spotify, YouTube etc., to see if you can listen to any interviews and get them insights there. All the best with your venture!

I feel like I am a bit late to the game here as your article is 4 years old by now but some of your ideas have (surprisingly) still not properly been implemented (at least here in the Netherlands there is still a lot of potential) We are a Dutch startup that is developing an algorithm that allows users to find ingredient substitutes in recipes. The idea is that any recipe can be turned vegetarian, vegan or allergen-free with the click of a button. The substitutes are found based on vitamins, minerals, nutrients, structure and flavor of the searched ingredient. As we have built an API, we are looking to integrated with online recipe providers and recipe apps so that soon, hopefully, any recipe can be turned vegan! We are still in development but try it out on bon-api.com and let me know what you think 🙂

The exciting part is I am planning to start a business that deals with non-dairy alternatives in my local area. Statistics says that in my state, non-vegetarians make 98.6% of the population. I have 2-3 people known to me who follow veganism. Though in my country, preference over veganism is on rise (not so prevalent at my part of the world though). So, it’s a big challenge to open a business to promote vegan food as people here mostly live on meats. But I have decided to take up the challenge and start following my dream. I am starting with non-dairy milk (I named it as meelk), cheese, tofu, okara burger pattie, yogurt and desserts. Let’s see how it goes. I think with most business ventures, it’s important to start as small as possible to 1) validate the idea and 2) remove barriers to starting.

With that, I would be thinking, what is the smallest menu you could create for the smallest audience in your area? Setup a simple a simple one-page website explaining your menu, what area you service, and how customers can pay. You can set this up on https://www.shopify.com and challenge yourself to get paying customers before the end of the free Shopify trial.

Once you have your menu and website, you could run some targeted Facebook ads to vegans in your area.

Don’t get too attached to your idea. Treat it like a science experiment and stay close to the needs of your customers. Ask potential customers in advance what they would like to see on your menu.

What about vegan milk? I know it’s available, but not like the cow milk, especially in our market in Bahrain and general in GCC. The basic things like milk, cheese, ect… Are little to compare with another.

Hi Nora. I think there’s always room for high quality products as long as they’re positioned well. Having said that, there’s been a lot of growth in the areas that you’re interested in. Maybe there’s an opportunity to create a one-stop shop for all of the brands that are making minimalist vegan clothing? That way you can be the curator instead of the maker – bringing all the brands together for a better customer experience. Just a thought. Let us know how you get on.

I have actually been thinking of vegan business ideas myself. After accidentally buying some chocolate chips that had milk in them because they were packaged similarly to ones that didn’t I felt so frustrated and thought, if only there was a grocery store that sold only vegan products I wouldn’t have to worry so much about reading every label so meticulously. I would really like to be part of a vegan catering service…but I am definiteley not a business person. I like to prep food and set up tables and that sort of thing. I have ideas, just not the know-how or the time either right now. Can’t stop working or I’ll lose my house. Can’t start a new business while working…and so it goes.

I’ve thought about this as well. An 100% Vegan grocer with a lot of bulk items that strives to be waste free and sells lots of eco products i.e. bamboo untensils, toothbrushes, reusable straws, etc. The startup and overhead costs are much higher than something online or home based though.

I have been toying with the idea of opening a small vegan eatery for over a year now. My husband is the landlord of a luncheonette that is unfortunately going to go out of business. My friend and I love to cook vegan meals. I have 2 gluten free vegans that live with me (my daughters), so I am used to cooking this way. I enjoy it. Both my friend and I work full time so we were thinking of doing something like a take out only place, cook meals on the weekends, freeze them and let customers have them for later on in the week. There are no vegan places around us, let alone gluten free.

Hi Robert, love your ambition! There’s always a way. There are some fashion retailers pushing bamboo garments however most of them aren’t organic. There’s definitely an opportunity – particularly with mens clothing as most of what’s in the market is catered towards women. I suggest reverse engineering what other retailers have done in this space. See if you can find their founder stories on the internet. You’ll likely get some nuggets of information and figure out your next steps. Also, don’t be afraid to partner with other entrepreneurs. You might give up some equity but more heads are better than one. You can do it!

Probably the oldest vegetarian spot in town, Jagganath is both a restaurant and a well-stocked vegetarian food shop. Here you’ll have a wide choice of all sorts of vegetables prepared in creative ways, as well as their tasty soups, salads and even soy shashlik (shish kebabs). As you might expect, the atmosphere is very hippy-esque, which relaxes your body and mind from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Jagganath has locations all over Moscow and has also spread to St. Petersburg.

Moscow has vegan restaurants, bakeries, cafes, food stores and even a beauty salon. With the appearance of Mission, Moscow now has its very own vegan pub with beer, food and heavy tunes! This is a small, unpretentious little spot serving up simple vegan fare such as falafel, hummus, vegan pilaf and various soups. Prices are very reasonable and thanks to its location (Artplay art cluster), there are also events like concerts, book readings, discussions and so on.

Fresh & Choice: Healthy Social Club

“Healthy is the new sexy,” so goes the motto of Fresh, Moscow's first modern gastronomic restaurant of vegetarian cuisine with stylish eco-friendly interior design. The woman behind Fresh, which now boasts a catering service, is Irina Azarova, a vegetarian and an expert on healthy living.

The menu has all the typical items you’d find in European and U.S. vegetarian restaurants: juices, wraps, fresh bowls, salads, soups, special detox menus and fun desserts. There’s also an online shop where you can get all your veggie-related needs.

Irina also opened Choice: Healthy Social Club, a slightly more upscale version of Fresh with a stylish interior, where the menu is all about healthy goodness. Although there is fish and dairy, there’s a very large selection of vegan and even raw items.

Once you’ve finished feeding your soul in the Tretyakov Gallery, simply take a few steps and you’ll find yourself in a pleasant and colorful vegetarian/vegan art space called Sok. The menu consists of Greek, Italian, Russian and Indian cuisines and is especially popular thanks to the fully vegan and raw desserts. Its menu is diverse, drawing on cuisines from around the world - Mexican, Arabic, Swiss, French, Russian, etc. - as well as special seasonal offerings. That is literally the reincarnation - no pun intended - of the tiny cafe that once served vegetarian Indian food. The owners took the open kitchen concept to a whole other level: you can see dishes washed, wood chopped, vegetables cut, the oven fired up, the naan prepared and so on right next to you. If you’re not a fan of spicy food don’t worry - everything is adapted to European tastes. This is a minimalistic food stall at the uber trendy Central Market on Tsvetnoy Boulevard serves beautifully presented vegan delights such as avocado toast with fennel, tofu sandwiches, smoothies, soups, desserts and signature drinks. All the ingredients are supplied by local farmers and nothing is fried. The guys recently teamed up with the coffee giants Double B and launched Double B Green near Kuznetsky Most metro station. Here, you can be assured that you can have your coffee in the most ecological way possible: no plastic straws, single use cutlery has been cut down to a minimum, everything is cleaned with eco-friendly washing liquids and the baristas are happy to pour the coffee into your reusable mug or fill up your water bottle for free.

Creamy one-pot vegetarian orzo with pesto and lemon

Ismat Awan is Sydney-based multimedia culinary creative who blends her cultural heritage with modern cooking techniques. She works across a number of food publications and brands. 

Spring has sprung, and all I want to do is frolic outside along the jacaranda-lined streets of Sydney. 

But as we all must crack on with daily work, life and schedules, I wrote this springy recipe instead. 

It's a much-loved one-pan recipe that works every time and can be tweaked to your liking. 

You can also omit vegetables you don't enjoy and add whatever needs using up in your fridge. 

This is a one-pot, creamy, lemon orzo packed with lots of green spring veg: leek, peas, asparagus and sugar snap peas. It's herbaceous and yum, topped with dill, parsley and store-bought pesto.

  • Use your favourite veggies: If you don't fancy any of the vegetables used in this recipe (I know fennel can be divisive) use whatever vegetables you like! Heartier vegetables like zucchini are cooked first, along with the leek. Smaller, softer vegetables such as kale or chard go in later. Be sure to chop larger vegetables into smaller pieces.
  • Salt comes from parmesan and pesto: No salt needed in this recipe as the parmesan is enough seasoning.
  • Ways to add protein: If you'd like to add protein to this meal, shredded roast chicken is a wonderful addition. As is, this is a delightful vegetarian meal.
  • Adjust the consistency to your liking: Add in extra stock, cream or water if you prefer a looser consistency.

Ingredients

  • Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a wide-lipped sauté pan, which has a fitted lid.
  • Sauté the leek, fennel, ground fennel seeds and garlic until softened, about 4–5 minutes.
  • Add in the stock, lemon zest and juice and bring to a simmer.
  • Mix in the orzo and cover with a lid. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Turn the heat down to low and add the peas, asparagus and sugar snap peas. Stir and cover again for another 3 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and remove the lid. Stir in the cream, parmesan and spinach — the residual heat will wilt the spinach immediately. At this stage, add a splash more stock if you prefer a looser consistency.
  • Top with dollops of store-bought basil pesto, fennel fronds and extra parmesan. Serve with freshly cracked black pepper.

I believe food choices are personal and never dictated by the place itself. For instance, most Indians believe finding vegetarian food outside of India means living on salads and potatoes. Similarly a number of people we met in Russia believed it was almost impossible to get meat in India, whatever happened to all the biryanis and kebabs!

Faced with the daunting task of being a vegetarian traveller in Russia, we consulted a friend. Sadly, he agreed that we might have to give up vegetarianism if we had to travel in Mother Russia. Turns out he was wrong!

It is always useful if you have a friend or host who can help you out with local food options. We were lucky to have a friend who served us a modest yet tasty lunch consisting of Borscht, bread and sour cream (yogurt). Borscht is a vegetable stew made primarily with beetroot, potatoes and onions; it is of Ukrainian origin though. As with most European nations Khleb or bread is popular in Russia too and is delicious on its own. Smetana or sour cream was the comfort food we had with almost everything we ate.

Thanks to all the warning we embarked on the Trans Siberian train ride with khleb, Smetana, loads of Tomato juice and some ready to eat food from India. But we soon realized vegetarians could actually have a feast on these journeys. Our co-passenger revealed to us that the sweet smelling snack sold on the trolleys inside the coach was indeed vegetarian! Kapoosta piroge or cabbage filled pie and Kartofel piroge or potato pie are your options for a good evening snack.

An English gentleman was kind enough to get a menu card from the in-house restaurant and marked everything that was vegetarian on it, this took care of the rest of our meals on the train. We had one of the best borscht, the best grechika (or buckwheat) and also some buttered rice with sautéed potato.

Local Canteens and Buffets

A very interesting dining option in Russia is the buffet on offer at several chains. These invariably have a number of vegetarian options and are pretty cheap. A popular chain called Mu-mu amused us with the numerous options it had on the menu, we realised that Lobio or black-eyed peas is a staple here along with numerous salads and bread. You should definitely try Vegetable Solyanka which is a soup and the local beverages.

We also had dinner at a plush looking restaurant called Grabli after watching the Nikulin circus. Here we had an elaborate dinner with several vegetarian options for under INR 500 for a couple! Buffets in Moscow are charged based on what's on your plate so one need not worry about paying more for having lesser options.

Happy cow App

As travellers who like to walk to most places it was important for us to locate eateries accordingly, which is when apps like Happy Cow came to our rescue. Happy cow usually lists restaurants even in remote towns and cities, and so while we were in Irkutsk, Eastern Siberia we didn't get much information from the locals but we easily found at least three Vegetarian restaurants within walking distance from our hotel using this app.

The Krishna consciousness around the world- Thank you ISKCON!

How much Russia is influenced by the ISKCON movement is for another time but thanks to that we found places like Govindas in Irkutsk and Jagannath in Veliky Novgorod which are both very small non-touristy towns. Although they do not serve typical Indian food but they serve pure vegan prasad in the form of kebabs, curries and even sumptuous cakes and pastries!

Consumerism Overtakes Communism!

If we were to travel to Russia a few years ago we probably wouldn't be lucky enough to walk into familiar spaces like The Subway or McDonalds. But thanks to the end of communism there are plenty of globally well known brands serving something familiar to our palate. The morning breakfast at McDonald's especially came to our rescue in Moscow as the city doesn't have many restaurants opening early for breakfast. You could opt for hash browns, berry filled pies and some coffee just to kickstart your day! We also noticed that though Subway doesn't have a vegetarian option on the menu, it's not very difficult to request for a custom-made one.

Learn the basic words for "meatless" in the local language!

Occasionally even the locals, mobile apps and signage don't help. When we were in Listvyanka, a tiny village on the banks of Lake Baikal, our host made it seem like a joke that we enquired about getting vegetarian food around the village. We didn't lose hope and all we did was peep into eateries and shout out ' bes myasa ', which means without meat and we discovered lots of fresh vegetarian food.

Useful TIPS to get authentic vegetarian food at least in the cities in Russia:

If you choose to stay in well-known hotel chains like we did in Irkutsk at Ibis, chances are that the breakfast spread will include the basic vegetarian options. Also most breakfast buffets in Russia have porridge made out of various millets especially buckwheat.

Vareniki are traditional Russian dumplings, an influence from the East and 'Varenichnaya' a restaurant chain serving this has plenty of vegetarian options both in sweet and savoury flavours. We tried Vareniki with spinach at the Red square outlet and became absolute fans!

Another popular chain that we absolutely became fans of is Teremok which is popular for our other Russian favorite Bliny. This is basically Russian crepe or pancake and yes it can be customized to be made without eggs like Ranjani ordered! They also serve grechika in the most innovative way.

*Teremok opens early for breakfast and has several branches both in Moscow and St.Petersburg.

Do not miss these local non-alcoholic beverages like Kvas which is made out of fermented rye bread, Mors which is made from Lingonberry and cranberry, Kefir which is an equivalent to buttermilk and packaged Tomato juice which you absolutely a must-try in Russia. We hydrated ourselves with litres of these, as the summers can get pretty hot even here! 

 It would be a sin to visit Russia and not have hot cocoa at least once,.In fact I had one every day for 22 days! However, if you ask me to pick a favorite, surprisingly it wouldn't be a tough task. My best memory is from the "Literary Café" which is as old as the country itself, writers like Pushkin used to sit here and sip their hot chocolate and write some of the most famous plays and poems. It's thick molten chocolate sans a marshmallow (sticking to traditions), in fact it is served with a glass of water so that you can gulp the last bits of chocolate.

Lastly, we enjoyed cooking several meals at the hostels' common-kitchens and kitchenettes of hotel rooms. Fresh fruits and vegetables, bread and smetana were basics we always carried and most hostels provide staples like rice, pasta and kitchenware. It saved us money as well as gave us a break from the occasional boredom.

Hot Chocolate and Bliny, Russian favorites

We spent close to a month in Russia without feeling homesick .It is quite refreshing to talk to so many people and learn about their food, culture and break common misconceptions, for example we learnt that during Lent which falls around end of March about 3 million Russians turn Vegan! We hope through this blog that food will no longer be your excuse to not put Russia on your travel bucket lists.
