How to develop research sub-questions

Once you have become familiar with your topic through your background research , you can begin to think about how to approach answering your Key Inquiry Question .

However, the Key Inquiry Question is usually too broad to answer at this early juncture.

Therefore, you need to break your Key Inquiry Question into smaller questions (called 'sub-questions') in order to answer it sufficiently.

Sub-questions are secondary questions that are related to a primary or main inquiry question and are used to break down and further explore a particular aspect of the main question.

They help to clarify the main question and provide more specific direction for the research.

How to create sub-questions

A good Key Inquiry Question can easily be divided into three separate parts which can be turned into sub-questions.

Based upon good background research , you should be able to identify the three divisions of your Key Inquiry Question .

For example:

If your Key Inquiry Question was:

Why did Martin Luther King believe that social problems could be fixed through non-violent means?  

The three parts that need to be answered separately can be highlighted as follows:

Why did Martin Luther King believe that social problems could be fixed through non-violent means ?  

Each of these parts can be turned into three sub-questions (with the same three elements highlighted).

What were Martin Luther King’s beliefs about society?

For what social problems did Martin Luther King want to find a solution?

How did Martin Luther King imagine that non-violent practices could help ?

The importance of good sub-questions

Spend time thinking of good sub-questions. Well thought-out sub-questions can mean the difference between an average and an excellent essay.

Good sub-questions should:

  • Be 'open' questions (This means that they cannot be answered with a simple 'yes' or 'no' answer. Usually this means starting the question with:  what, why, or how)
  • Incorporate terms and concepts that you learnt during your background research

In answering each of your three sub-questions through source research , you will ultimately have an answer for your Key Inquiry Question .

Improving your sub-questions

Even though you are required to create sub-questions at the beginning of your research process , it does not mean that they do not change.

As you begin finding sources that help answer your original sub-questions, you will find that you will need to modify your questions.

This is usually the result of discovering further, more specific, information about your topic.

Improving your sub-questions during your source research stage will result in better topic sentences and, as a result, a better essay .

 What role did the bombings of Tokyo , Hiroshima and Nagasaki have on Japan’s decision to surrender at the end of World War Two?

An initial and simplistic set of sub-questions could be:

  •   What role did the bombing of Tokyo have on Japan’s decision to surrender at the end of World War Two?
  • What role did the bombing of Hiroshima have on Japan’s decision to surrender at the end of World War Two?
  • What role did the bombing of Nagasaki have on Japan’s decision to surrender at the end of World War Two?

However, after conducting further research, they could be improved by including specific dates and historical information :

  • What role did the March 9th incendiary bombings of Tokyo have on Japan's decision to surrender at the end of World War Two ?
  • What role did the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th have on Japan's decision to surrender at the end of World War Two ?
  • What role did the atomic bombing of Nagasaki August 9th have on Japan's decision to surrender at the end of World War Two ?

Finally, after finding some detailed primary and secondary sources, they could be further improved by citing the role that key people played :

  • How did the March 9th incendiary bombings of Tokyo motivate emperor Hirohito to become more involved in ending the Second World War?
  • Why did the Japanese government not surrender after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on the 6th of August, 1945 ?
  • Why did Hirohito finally decide to surrender after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9th, 1945 ?

10 Research Question Examples to Guide your Research Project

The research question is one of the most important parts of your research paper , thesis or dissertation . It’s important to spend some time assessing and refining your question before you get started.

The exact form of your question will depend on a few things, such as the length of your project, the type of research you’re conducting, the topic , and the research problem . However, all research questions should be focused, specific, and relevant to a timely social or scholarly issue.

Once you’ve read our guide on how to write a research question , you can use these examples to craft your own.

Research question Explanation
The first question is not enough. The second question is more , using .
Starting with “why” often means that your question is not enough: there are too many possible answers. By targeting just one aspect of the problem, the second question offers a clear path for research.
The first question is too broad and subjective: there’s no clear criteria for what counts as “better.” The second question is much more . It uses clearly defined terms and narrows its focus to a specific population.
It is generally not for academic research to answer broad normative questions. The second question is more specific, aiming to gain an understanding of possible solutions in order to make informed recommendations.
The first question is too simple: it can be answered with a simple yes or no. The second question is , requiring in-depth investigation and the development of an original argument.
The first question is too broad and not very . The second question identifies an underexplored aspect of the topic that requires investigation of various  to answer.
The first question is not enough: it tries to address two different (the quality of sexual health services and LGBT support services). Even though the two issues are related, it’s not clear how the research will bring them together. The second integrates the two problems into one focused, specific question.
The first question is too simple, asking for a straightforward fact that can be easily found online. The second is a more question that requires and detailed discussion to answer.
? dealt with the theme of racism through casting, staging, and allusion to contemporary events? The first question is not  — it would be very difficult to contribute anything new. The second question takes a specific angle to make an original argument, and has more relevance to current social concerns and debates.
The first question asks for a ready-made solution, and is not . The second question is a clearer comparative question, but note that it may not be practically . For a smaller research project or thesis, it could be narrowed down further to focus on the effectiveness of drunk driving laws in just one or two countries.

Note that the design of your research question can depend on what method you are pursuing. Here are a few options for qualitative, quantitative, and statistical research questions.

Research Sub-Questions

Often, in order to answer our main research question, we need to answer a series of smaller sub-questions.

Take a look at this image of a tree. It’s a drawing by Bruno Munari, an Italian writer and artist. According to Munari (2013), we can observe two patterns of growth for a tree with two branches:

  • The branch that follows is always slenderer than the one before.
  • Starting with the trunk dividing into two limbs, each limb will subsequently divide into two

Think of research questions and research sub-questions like this tree. Your main question is the trunk. Your research sub-questions are narrower, more specific questions that branch off the trunk, your main question, but are still connected to the trunk. Like the branches in this tree, your research sub-questions can even yield sub-questions of their own.

Main question.

The main research question is the question that your thesis is intended to answer. 

Main questions are generally broken down into sub-questions that enable you to tackle your research in a more step-by-step manner. Together your findings for these components will provide an answer to the main question.

What characterizes a good main question?

  • The question is clear . The concepts in the question are also clear. With a vague question you will lose focus
  • The question is specific . After all, you want to be able to search specifically. With a too general, broad, poorly defined question you will soon get lost in a slew of information
  • The question is relevant . The answer to the question must therefore contribute directly to the solution of your "information problem" and the achievement of your objective.
  • The question is " open ". So it is not a question to which only "yes" or "no" can be the answer
  • The question is realistic . It is possible to find an answer within the time available and with sufficient resources
  • If it is possible to find an answer within the available time
  • If there are sufficient means to find the answer

Keep in mind:

You can only search in a focused and effective manner if it is exactly clear as to what it is you want to know. So formulate a specific question that gives direction to your search process.

Once you have formulated your main research question, you should focus on identifying the sub-questions that will enable you to answer it.

Examples of sub-questions

Possible sub-questions:

  • What is Airbnb?
  • How does the hotel market work?
  • H ow does the consumer respond to the price / quality ratio of Airbnb versus hotels?

Sometimes you can further specify the sub-questions to search queries . Search queries are aspects of sub-questions. They view the subject from different angles. For example, in the sub-question "What is Airbnb?" you could think of the following search queries:

  • What is the history of Airbnb?
  • is there also an Airbnb for the business market?

This page gives some help and guidance in developing a realistic research question. It also considers the role of sub-questions and how these can influence your methodological choices. 

Choosing your research topic

You may have been provided with a list of potential topics or even specific questions to choose from. It is more common for you to have to come up with your own ideas and then refine them with the help of your tutor. This is a crucial decision as you will be immersing yourself in it for a long time.

Some students struggle to find a topic that is sufficiently significant and yet researchable within the limitations of an undergraduate project. You may feel overwhelmed by the freedom to choose your own topic but you could get ideas by considering the following:

Choose a topic that you find interesting . This may seem obvious but a lot of students go for what they think will be easy over what they think will be interesting - and regret it when they realise nothing is particularly easy and they are bored by the work. Think back over your lectures or talks from visiting speakers - was there anything you really enjoyed? Was there anything that left you with questions?

Choose something distinct . Whilst at undergraduate level you do not have to find something completely unique, if you find something a bit different you have more opportunity to come to some interesting conclusions. Have you some unique experiences that you can bring: personal biography, placements, study abroad etc?

Don't make your topic too wide . If your topic is too wide, it will be harder to develop research questions that you can actually answer in the context of a small research project.

Don't make your work too narrow . If your topic is too narrow, you will not be able to expand on the ideas sufficiently and make useful conclusions. You may also struggle to find enough literature to support it.

Scope out the field before deciding your topic . This is especially important if you have a few different options and are not sure which to pick. Spend a little time researching each one to get a feel for the amount of literature that exists and any particular avenues that could be worth exploring.

Think about your future . Some topics may fit better than others with your future plans, be they for further study or employment. Becoming more expert in something that you may have to be interviewed about is never a bad thing!

Once you have an idea (or even a few), speak to your tutor. They will advise on whether it is the right sort of topic for a dissertation or independent study. They have a lot of experience and will know if it is too much to take on, has enough material to build on etc.

Developing a research question or hypothesis

Research question vs hypothesis.

First, it may be useful to explain the difference between a research question and a hypothesis. A research question is simply a question that your research will address and hopefully answer (or give an explanation of why you couldn't answer it). A hypothesis is a statement that suggests how you expect something to function or behave (and which you would test to see if it actually happens or not).

Research question examples

  • How significant is league table position when students choose their university?
  • What impact can a diagnosis of depression have on physical health?

Note that these are open questions - i.e. they cannot be answered with a simple 'yes' or 'no'. This is the best form of question.

Hypotheses examples

  • Students primarily choose their university based on league table position.
  • A diagnosis of depression can impact physical health.

Note that these are things that you can test to see if they are true or false. This makes them more definite then research questions - but you can still answer them more fully than 'no they don't' or 'yes it does'. For example, in the above examples you would look to see how relevant other factors were when choosing universities and in what ways physical health may be impacted.

Which do you need?

Generally, research questions are more common in the humanities, social sciences and business, whereas hypotheses are more common in the sciences. This is not a hard rule though, talk things through with your supervisor to see which they are expecting or which they think fits best with your topic.

What makes a good research question or hypothesis?

Unless you are undertaking a systematic review as your research method, you will develop your research question  as a result of reviewing the literature on your broader topic. After all, it is only by seeing what research has already been done (or not) that you can justify the need for your question or your approach to answering it. At the end of that process, you should be able to come up with a question or hypothesis that is:

  • Clear (easily understandable)
  • Focused (specific not vague or huge)
  • Answerable (the data is available and analysable in the time frame)
  • Relevant (to your area of study)
  • Significant (it is worth answering)

You can try a few out, using a table like this (yours would all be in the same discipline):

A similar, though different table is available from the University of California: What makes a good research topic?   The completed table has some supervisor comments which may also be helpful.

Ultimately, your final research question will be mutually agreed between yourself and your supervisor - but you should always bring your own ideas to the conversation.

The role of sub-questions

Your main research question will probably still be too big to answer easily. This is where sub-questions come in. They are specific, narrower questions that you can answer directly from your data.

So, looking at the question " How much do online users know and care about how their self-images can be used by Apple, Google, Microsoft and Facebook? " from the table above, the sub-questions could be:

  • What rights do the terms and conditions of signing up for Apple, Google, Microsoft and Facebook accounts give those companies regarding the use of self-images?
  • What proportion of users read the terms and conditions when creating accounts with these companies?
  • How aware are users of the rights they are giving away regarding their self-images when creating accounts with these companies?
  • How comfortable are users with giving away these rights?

The main research question is the overarching question with the subquestions filling in the blanks

Together, the answers to your sub-questions should enable you to answer the overarching research question.

How do you answer your sub-questions?

Depending on the type of dissertation/project your are undertaking, some (or all) the questions may be answered with information collected from the literature and some (or none) may be answered by analysing data directly collected as part of your primary empirical research .

In the above example, the first question would be answered by documentary analysis of the relevant terms and conditions, the second by a mixture of reviewing the literature and analysing survey responses from participants and the last two also by analysing survey responses. Different projects will require different approaches.

A research question pinpoints exactly what you want to find out in your work. A good research question is essential to guide your research paper , dissertation , or thesis .

All research questions should be:

  • Focused on a single problem or issue
  • Researchable using primary and/or secondary sources
  • Feasible to answer within the timeframe and practical constraints
  • Specific enough to answer thoroughly
  • Complex enough to develop the answer over the space of a paper or thesis
  • Relevant to your field of study and/or society more broadly

You can follow these steps to develop a strong research question:

  • Choose your topic
  • Do some preliminary reading about the current state of the field
  • Narrow your focus to a specific niche
  • Identify the research problem that you will address

The way you frame your question depends on what your research aims to achieve. The table below shows some examples of how you might formulate questions for different purposes.

Note that while most research questions can be answered with various types of research , the way you frame your question should help determine your choices.

Research questions anchor your whole project, so it’s important to spend some time refining them. The criteria below can help you evaluate the strength of your research question.

Focused and researchable

Criteria Explanation
Focused on a single topic Your central research question should work together with your research problem to keep your work focused. If you have multiple questions, they should all clearly tie back to your central aim.
Answerable using Your question must be answerable using and/or , or by reading scholarly sources on the topic to develop your argument. If such data is impossible to access, you likely need to rethink your question.
Not based on value judgements Avoid subjective words like , , and . These do not give clear criteria for answering the question.

Feasible and specific

Criteria Explanation
Answerable within practical constraints Make sure you have enough time and resources to do all research required to answer your question. If it seems you will not be able to gain access to the data you need, consider narrowing down your question to be more specific.
Uses specific, well-defined concepts All the terms you use in the research question should have clear meanings. Avoid vague language, jargon, and too-broad ideas.

Does not demand a conclusive solution, policy, or course of action Research is about informing, not instructing. Even if your project is focused on a practical problem, it should aim to improve understanding rather than demand a ready-made solution.

Complex and arguable

Criteria Explanation
Cannot be answered with or Closed-ended, / questions are too simple to work as good research questions—they don’t provide enough scope for robust investigation and discussion.

Cannot be answered with easily-found facts If you can answer the question through a single Google search, book, or article, it is probably not complex enough. A good research question requires original data, synthesis of multiple sources, and original interpretation and argumentation prior to providing an answer.

Relevant and original

Criteria Explanation
Addresses a relevant problem Your research question should be developed based on initial reading around your . It should focus on addressing a problem or gap in the existing knowledge in your field or discipline.
Contributes to a timely social or academic debate The question should aim to contribute to an existing and current debate in your field or in society at large. It should produce knowledge that future researchers or practitioners can later build on.
Has not already been answered You don’t have to ask something that nobody has ever thought of before, but your question should have some aspect of originality. For example, you can focus on a specific location, or explore a new angle.

The way you present your research problem in your introduction varies depending on the nature of your research paper . A research paper that presents a sustained argument will usually encapsulate this argument in a thesis statement .

A research paper designed to present the results of empirical research tends to present a research question that it seeks to answer. It may also include a hypothesis – a prediction that will be confirmed or disproved by your research.

As you cannot possibly read every source related to your topic, it’s important to evaluate sources to assess their relevance. Use preliminary evaluation to determine whether a source is worth examining in more depth.

This involves:

  • Reading abstracts , prefaces, introductions , and conclusions
  • Looking at the table of contents to determine the scope of the work
  • Consulting the index for key terms or the names of important scholars

An essay isn’t just a loose collection of facts and ideas. Instead, it should be centered on an overarching argument (summarised in your thesis statement ) that every part of the essay relates to.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

A research hypothesis is your proposed answer to your research question. The research hypothesis usually includes an explanation (‘ x affects y because …’).

A statistical hypothesis, on the other hand, is a mathematical statement about a population parameter. Statistical hypotheses always come in pairs: the null and alternative hypotheses. In a well-designed study , the statistical hypotheses correspond logically to the research hypothesis.

What Is a Research Question?

A good research question defines your study and helps you seek an answer to your research. Moreover, a clear research question guides the research paper or thesis to define exactly what you want to find out, giving your work its objective. Learning to write a research question is the beginning to any thesis, dissertation , or research paper. Furthermore, the question addresses issues or problems which is answered through analysis and interpretation of data.

Why Is a Research Question Important?

A strong research question guides the design of a study. Moreover, it helps determine the type of research and identify specific objectives. Research questions state the specific issue you are addressing and focus on outcomes of the research for individuals to learn. Therefore, it helps break up the study into easy steps to complete the objectives and answer the initial question.

Types of Research Questions

Research questions can be categorized into different types, depending on the type of research you want to undergo. Furthermore, knowing the type of research will help a researcher determine the best type of research question to use.

1. Qualitative Research Question

Qualitative questions concern broad areas or more specific areas of research. However, unlike quantitative questions, qualitative research questions are adaptable, non-directional and more flexible. Qualitative research question focus on discovering, explaining, elucidating, and exploring.

i. Exploratory Questions

This form of question looks to understand something without influencing the results. The objective of exploratory questions is to learn more about a topic without attributing bias or preconceived notions to it.

Research Question Example: Asking how a chemical is used or perceptions around a certain topic.

ii. Predictive Questions

Uncertain: How should social networking sites work on the hatred that flows through their platform?

Certain: What should social media sites like Twitter or Facebook do to address the harm they are causing?

This unclear question does not specify the social networking sites that are being used or what harm they might be causing. In addition, this question assumes that the "harm" has been proven and/or accepted. This version is more specific and identifies the sites (Twitter, Facebook), the type and extent of harm (privacy concerns), and who might be suffering from that harm (users). Effective research questions should not be ambiguous or interpreted.

Unfocused: What are the effects of global warming on the environment?

Focused: What are the most important effects of glacial melting in Antarctica on penguins' lives?

This broad research question cannot be addressed in a book, let alone a college-level paper. Focused research targets a specific effect of global heating (glacial  melting), an area (Antarctica), or a specific animal (penguins). The writer must also decide which effect will have the greatest impact on the animals affected. If in doubt, narrow down your research question to the most specific possible.

Too Simple: What are the U.S. doctors doing to treat diabetes?

Appropriately complex: Which factors, if any, are most likely to predict a person's risk of developing diabetes?

This simple version can be found online. It is easy to answer with a few facts. The second, more complicated version of this question is divided into two parts. It is thought-provoking and requires extensive investigation as well as evaluation by the author. So, ensure that a quick Google search should not answer your research question.

These three elements are bundled together because it’s extremely important that they align with each other, and that the entire research project aligns with them.

Importantly, the golden thread needs to weave its way through the entirety of any research project , from start to end. In other words, it needs to be very clearly defined right at the beginning of the project (the topic ideation and proposal stage) and it needs to inform almost every decision throughout the rest of the project. For example, your research design and methodology will be heavily influenced by the golden thread (we’ll explain this in more detail later), as well as your literature review.

The research aims, objectives and research questions (the golden thread) define the focus and scope ( the delimitations ) of your research project. In other words, they help ringfence your dissertation or thesis to a relatively narrow domain, so that you can “go deep” and really dig into a specific problem or opportunity. They also help keep you on track , as they act as a litmus test for relevance. In other words, if you’re ever unsure whether to include something in your document, simply ask yourself the question, “does this contribute toward my research aims, objectives or questions?”. If it doesn’t, chances are you can drop it.

Alright, enough of the fluffy, conceptual stuff. Let’s get down to business and look at what exactly the research aims, objectives and questions are and outline a few examples to bring these concepts to life.

Research Aims: What are they?

Simply put, the research aim(s) is a statement that reflects the broad overarching goal (s) of the research project. Research aims are fairly high-level (low resolution) as they outline the general direction of the research and what it’s trying to achieve .

Research Aims: Examples  

True to the name, research aims usually start with the wording “this research aims to…”, “this research seeks to…”, and so on. For example:

“This research aims to explore employee experiences of digital transformation in retail HR.”   “This study sets out to assess the interaction between student support and self-care on well-being in engineering graduate students”  

As you can see, these research aims provide a high-level description of what the study is about and what it seeks to achieve. They’re not hyper-specific or action-oriented, but they’re clear about what the study’s focus is and what is being investigated.

Research Objectives: What are they?

The research objectives take the research aims and make them more practical and actionable . In other words, the research objectives showcase the steps that the researcher will take to achieve the research aims.

The research objectives need to be far more specific (higher resolution) and actionable than the research aims. In fact, it’s always a good idea to craft your research objectives using the “SMART” criteria. In other words, they should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound”.

Research Objectives: Examples  

Let’s look at two examples of research objectives. We’ll stick with the topic and research aims we mentioned previously.  

For the digital transformation topic:

To observe the retail HR employees throughout the digital transformation. To assess employee perceptions of digital transformation in retail HR. To identify the barriers and facilitators of digital transformation in retail HR.

And for the student wellness topic:

To determine whether student self-care predicts the well-being score of engineering graduate students. To determine whether student support predicts the well-being score of engineering students. To assess the interaction between student self-care and student support when predicting well-being in engineering graduate students.

  As you can see, these research objectives clearly align with the previously mentioned research aims and effectively translate the low-resolution aims into (comparatively) higher-resolution objectives and action points . They give the research project a clear focus and present something that resembles a research-based “to-do” list.

The research objectives detail the specific steps that you, as the researcher, will take to achieve the research aims you laid out.

Research Questions: What are they?

Finally, we arrive at the all-important research questions. The research questions are, as the name suggests, the key questions that your study will seek to answer . Simply put, they are the core purpose of your dissertation, thesis, or research project. You’ll present them at the beginning of your document (either in the introduction chapter or literature review chapter) and you’ll answer them at the end of your document (typically in the discussion and conclusion chapters).  

The research questions will be the driving force throughout the research process. For example, in the literature review chapter, you’ll assess the relevance of any given resource based on whether it helps you move towards answering your research questions. Similarly, your methodology and research design will be heavily influenced by the nature of your research questions. For instance, research questions that are exploratory in nature will usually make use of a qualitative approach, whereas questions that relate to measurement or relationship testing will make use of a quantitative approach.  

Let’s look at some examples of research questions to make this more tangible.

Research Questions: Examples  

Again, we’ll stick with the research aims and research objectives we mentioned previously.  

For the digital transformation topic (which would be qualitative in nature):

How do employees perceive digital transformation in retail HR? What are the barriers and facilitators of digital transformation in retail HR?  

And for the student wellness topic (which would be quantitative in nature):

Does student self-care predict the well-being scores of engineering graduate students? Does student support predict the well-being scores of engineering students? Do student self-care and student support interact when predicting well-being in engineering graduate students?  

You’ll probably notice that there’s quite a formulaic approach to this. In other words, the research questions are basically the research objectives “converted” into question format. While that is true most of the time, it’s not always the case. For example, the first research objective for the digital transformation topic was more or less a step on the path toward the other objectives, and as such, it didn’t warrant its own research question.  

So, don’t rush your research questions and sloppily reword your objectives as questions. Carefully think about what exactly you’re trying to achieve (i.e. your research aim) and the objectives you’ve set out, then craft a set of well-aligned research questions . Also, keep in mind that this can be a somewhat iterative process , where you go back and tweak research objectives and aims to ensure tight alignment throughout the golden thread.

The importance of strong alignment 

Alignment is the keyword here and we have to stress its importance . Simply put, you need to make sure that there is a very tight alignment between all three pieces of the golden thread. If your research aims and research questions don’t align, for example, your project will be pulling in different directions and will lack focus . This is a common problem students face and can cause many headaches (and tears), so be warned.

Take the time to carefully craft your research aims, objectives and research questions before you run off down the research path. Ideally, get your research supervisor/advisor to review and comment on your golden thread before you invest significant time into your project, and certainly before you start collecting data .

You are here, developing sub-questions that can be researched: operationalization.

Operationalization is the process of translating a research idea, (which may focus on an abstract theme), into something that can actually be researched in practice (Cohen, et al. 2011). This process can be subdivided into five stages:

This process of operationalisation can be subdivided into five stages:

Stage 1: starting from your central research focus, identify the factors that could have an impact on the focus you want to study within your education context.

Stage 2: begin to frame research questions to explore these factors.

Stage 3: develop an operational definition or indicator for each of the factors you want to study to enable you to identify this practically (Newby, 2014) (particularly useful for factors that represent abstract concepts).

Stage 4: identify the kind of evidence you need to answer your research questions and select most appropriate research methods that will enable you to collect this evidence.

Stage 5: design the research tools that you will use to collect this evidence.

Creating operational definitions for the factors that are influencing your research focus involves identifying indicators that enable you to research these factors (Matthews and Ross, 2010). Creating an operational definition for each of the factors which are important in your research enables the research question to be translated into a form that can be researched i.e. it becomes operational. Therefore the purpose of operational definitions is to create indicators which enable you “to tell when the thing you are researching happens” (Matthews and Ross, 2010: 61). Also where terms in research questions describe complex ideas or processes or there is the possibility that different people may interpret terms differently, it is important to establish a working definition of key terms (Kumar, 2011). Factors that are based on abstract concepts for which operational definitions need to be developed include: attitude to learnin’; creatitvity; resilience; curiosity. These abstract concepts need to operational definitions which provide indicators that translate them into a form which can be studied. Collecting data about these indicators will enable you to explore the impact of variables / factors within the context that you are researching. These indicators are measured or explored through the use of research tools such as questionnaires or interview schedules.

The development of indicators for the variables or factors you want to research is particularly important where these are not easy to represent. In the example below possible indicators have been identified for variables exploring differences in questions that can be investigated through a quantitative or qualitative approach:

Attitudes to learning

Amount of on-task behaviour determined through observation (time-sampling)

Enthusiasm observed during a task

 

Attitudes expressed for aspects of learning during semi-structured interview

Effectiveness of teacher questioning

Incidence of the use of open or closed questions (counting)

Types of pupil response generated by open and closed questions

 

Pupils’ perceptions of the teacher’s use of questioning explored during interview

  • How are biochemical conditions and brain activity linked to crime?

  • Why does crime exist in society?
  • Decolonization in Canada: what does decolonization mean?

The bad example is too simplistic and doesn’t focus on the aspects of help that dogs can give to their owners. A more effective variant is in the right column.

  • How is resource scarcity impacting the chocolate industry?
  • What should the Brazilian government do about reducing Amazon’s deforestation?

Lack of Debatability

The problem of diabetes is well-known and doesn’t cause any doubts. So, you should add debatability to the discussed issue.

Look at some other research question examples that are debatable enough:

  • Online vs. print journalism: what is more beneficial?
  • Why will artificial intelligence not replace human in near future?
  • What are the differences between art and design?
  • Crime TV: how is criminality represented on television?

The question in the left column is too long and ambiguous, making the readers lose focus. You can shorten it without losing the essence.

Look at some other research question examples that are concise enough:

  • What is the best way to address obesity in the US?
  • Doctoral degree in nursing: why is it important?

Now, it’s time to get down from science to practice. Here is a tried-and-tested algorithm for killer research question generation.

  • Pick a topic . Once you get a writing assignment, it’s time to find an appropriate topic first . You can’t formulate a thesis statement or research question if you know nothing about your subject, so it's time to narrow your scope and find out as much as possible about the upcoming task.

We're entering what could be the most crucial 48 hours of the election campaign for the economy.

There are two closely watched events ahead: the inflation figures for May (released early on Wednesday), followed the next day by the Bank of England's last interest rate decision before polling day.

The latter hinges on the former, in terms of potential excitement.

The consensus view is that the rate of inflation will ease back to the Bank of England's target of 2% for the first time since spring 2021.

That should be enough for the Bank of England to act the following day, you may well think. Job done?

Borrowers across the country are crying out for a rate cut after several false dawns in the fixed-rate mortgage market since we first really started talking about the prospects for rate cuts at the start of the year.

A reduction from 5.25% to 5% by the independent central bank would also be welcome for the Conservatives.

But here's where, from the view of economists and financial markets, the fairy tale for voters and the government hangs in the balance.

Even if the inflation rate hits the Bank of England's target this week, just 9% of the market currently expects the Bank of England to cut on Thursday.

That figure could change if the inflation number comes in lower than expected but the prediction is based on the future path for inflation rather than the present number.

Bank policymakers have repeatedly voiced worries over indicators showing a pick-up in the pace of price increases during the second half of the year.

They are concerned too that wage growth, running stubbornly at 6% annually at the moment, risks stoking demand in the economy and therefore inflation further.

Without these factors falling out of consideration, the majority on the rate-setting committee will likely continue to say it's too early to release the chokehold on inflation.

There is also a school of thought that the Bank would be reluctant to act during an election campaign.

So, these two events ahead are unlikely to rock the boat politically, or light up your finances to the extent the Bank of England has seen enough to fire the starting gun.

There is certainly the chance of a surprise on Thursday but it would take a pretty big shift for that pistol to light up the race for Number 10.

Doctors are calling for the drink-drive limit to be reduced to the equivalent of a small glass of wine or beer.

The limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is the highest in Europe at 80mg of  alcohol  per 100ml of blood. In Scotland it is 50mg.

The British Medical Foundation, the trade union for doctors, has said it will lobby the next government to reduce the limit to 50mg - and 20mg for new and commercial drivers.

Grocery inflation has eased for the 16th month in a row, according to industry data released ahead of the general election.

Kantar Worldpanel - which tracks supermarket till prices, sales and market share - said its measure of grocery inflation slowed to 2.1% in the four weeks to 9 June from 2.4% the previous month.

The UK had the lowest rates of business investment out of all G7 nations for a third year in a row, a new report has claimed.

The economies of the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan are all said to have attracted higher levels of funding from the private sector - as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) - in 2022.

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), which carried out the research, said the ranking was important because investment in things like new factories, equipment and innovations helped boost economic activity, wages and household incomes.

House buyers or renters should be familiar with being handed an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) when surveying a property. 

In theory, they offer insight as to how efficient a building is - except consumer champion Which? doesn't think so.

Its experts argue that the certificates are "unreliable" and that the next government urgently needs to reform the system. 

It may not seem like the end of the world - but access to grant funding, or green financial products such as loans or mortgages, is often available only to those who meet certain EPC-based criteria.

Additionally, a better EPC can make a big difference for owners, as it allows them to command a higher price if they choose to sell and may make the home more attractive to tenants.  

The consumer magazine selected homeowners and booked EPC assessments on their behalf. 

"Which? uncovered issues with the accuracy of the results and the recommendations that homeowners received," it said. 

"Most participants (eight out of 11) told Which? their EPC did not appear to be accurate - they said the descriptions of key aspects of their home like the windows, roofs and heating systems were incorrect."

An electric vehicle company looking to rival Tesla has filed for bankruptcy amid a wider sales slump in the industry. 

Fisker filed a bankruptcy petition in Delaware yesterday after after failing to secure investment, announcing weaker-than-expected earnings and plans to cut 15% of its workforce.

The company, started by James Bond car designer Henrik Fisker, announced plans in March to cut prices by as much as 39%, while its share price has plummeted by 99% in recent days.

This comes as electric vehicle sales in the US and Europe continue to drop. 

Smoke machines are the latest gadgets being introduced into supermarket shops to fight crime.

Tesco has deployed them in some stores to stop thieves breaking in after-hours, Sky News understands.

The 4ft security machines - arranged on the shop floor after closing -  fill the room with a dense fog if motion detectors are tripped.

"Warning: You're being watched. Smoke screen security fog in operation," reads a message on the front of the device, which is fitted with a CCTV camera.

Sky News understands the unit pictured above was not plugged in and has been removed after being mistakenly left out during opening times.

While the deterrent has been rolled out in some high-risk branches, they are not part of a universal policy.

A customer who saw the device said: "The size and visibility of the machine, along with the prominent camera, and the pair of eyes and 'We're watching you' decals, highlight its use as yet another part of the culture of fear visited on the most vulnerable in our society during this cost of living crisis."

Tesco has declined to comment.

Basically... it's a little "what it says on the tin", but an interest-only mortgage is an agreement where you pay only the interest owed on your loan each month.

Popular in the 1980s and 90s, and peaking just before the 2008 financial crisis, interest-only mortgages benefit those who are trying to keep their monthly payments down in the short term.

How does an interest-only mortgage work?

You only pay off the interest on the amount you borrow - not the loan itself.

This differs from more common repayment mortgages which see you pay off the interest and some of the capital on your home each month, eventually leading to the mortgage being paid off at the end of the term.

With interest-only, you'll have to pay off the total amount borrowed in full at the end of your mortgage term using savings, investments or other assets.

You can also find temporary arrangements if you are struggling financially.

Example:  You're looking at a house which requires you to borrow £100,000 over 25 years with a fixed interest rate of 3.5%.

Imagining this interest rate stays the same for the whole term, on a repayment mortgage plan your monthly cost would be  £501 , while on interest-only it would be significantly lower at  £292 .

The interest-only option is great for those who want to keep their outgoings in check - but it does mean that, as the capital isn't being paid down, the amount of interest ends up being higher than on the full repayment plan.

Therefore someone on an interest-only deal would owe  £187,579  (£87,579 interest plus £100,000 loan capital outstanding), while a repayment deal would see them pay back  £150,238  (£100,000 loan capital fully paid off plus £50,238 interest).

How easy are they to come by? 

As we touched on earlier, prior to the 2008 financial crisis interest-only mortgages were much easier to get hold of - some 40% of all mortgages taken out were interest-only around this time.

But the crash revealed that many loans were at risk with customers who would struggle to pay off the full loan later down the line.

Affordability criteria were introduced as a result, which caused their popularity to sharply decline. It's now quite difficult to borrow on an interest-only basis, with not all lenders offering them as an option.

Those that do will have strict terms, such as a high deposit and an approved plan to pay the loan back at the end of the term.

Research by the Financial Conduct Authority in August last year revealed that the number of interest-only and part-interest-only mortgages had halved since 2015.

What are the benefits? 

The biggie with interest-only mortgages is the reduced monthly payments, which can provide you with a financial safety net if you go through times when you're earning less.

There's also a chance that if you're in your property for a long time, you could sell it for more than you paid for it, meaning you've built up equity to help you pay off the lump sump.

What about the downsides?

You're not paying off any of the loan as you go, meaning you're not building up that equity that you would do with a repayment mortgage. You'll also end up paying more interest due to not making a dent in the capital.

Interest-only also means you need a solid plan for paying it off at the end of the term - this may include constant monitoring of investments and being strict with yourself to ensure you're putting money aside. With a repayment plan you don't need to think about this element.

An invitation-only "Diamond" Deliveroo subscription has launched, offering priority delivery, dedicated customer care teams and access to restaurants unavailable to other consumers.

For £19.99 per month, users get 10% credit back on orders of £30 or more and an on-time promise - meaning if an order arrives more than 15 minutes late, customers get their money back.

Only the very top users of the app will be invited to subscribe - with members estimated to spend three times as much as regular customers and twice as likely to try a restaurant that was new to the platform.

"The enhanced loyalty programme will play an important role in driving growth for Deliveroo," the company said.

A London fish and chip shop has been named in the top 100 best cheap eats in Europe.

The Mayfair Chippy comes in at 87 in the respected  Opinionated About Dining list - which is widely shared by top chefs and which draws conclusions based on tens of thousands of reviews from foodies.

As far as chippies go, Mayfair isn't actually that cheap - a cod and chips will set you back over £19...

The top UK entry is bakery Fabrique at 25 - and most things in its central London branches cost less than a fiver.

Pollen Bakery in Manchester, where you can easily eat for less than £10, is at 54 - with St John's Bakery (Neals Yard), in London, famous for its donuts, is at 57.

Jolene bakery in Newington Green, London, which has a daily changing menu, is at 59 - ahead of ramen joint Kanada-Ya, which has branches in Angel, Soho and Covent Garden.

Lots of other London eateries make the lower end of the top 100 - which is topped by Oslo coffee bar Tim Wendelboe.

The stock market in London has crept up slightly this morning as investors wait for tomorrow's inflation data - followed by Thursday's interest rate decision by the Bank of England.

The figures will be the last major economic indicators to be released ahead of July's general election.

Commentators expect inflation to fall to the Bank's target of 2% on Wednesday, according to a poll of economists by Reuters.

While an interest rate cut is not expected this week, the forecast drop in inflation will help pave the way for a rate cut in August, experts say.

Fiona Cincotta, a senior market analyst at City Index, said investors were keenly waiting for tomorrow's data - but said there was a "sense of optimism".

Overall, the FTSE 100 is up almost 0.4% this morning, while the FTSE 250 has increased by just over 0.5%.

Among the top gainers is Whitbread, which owns brands such as Premier Inn. The hospitality firm is up nearly 4% after reporting its results for the first quarter.

Whitbread said sales rose 1% to £739m and that its performance was in line with expectations.

At the other end of the scale, industrial equipment rental company Ashtead Group has slipped nearly 4% after the firm downgraded its growth forecast.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.27 US or €1.18, similar to Monday.

The cost of oil is up this morning, with a barrel of Brent Crude priced at almost $84 (£66).

Strategic Advisory Group on the Global Digital Health Certification Network

The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking experts to serve as members of the Strategic Advisory Group on the Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN). This “Call for experts” provides information about the advisory group in question, the expert profiles being sought, the process to express interest, and the process of selection.

WHO's Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN) is a mechanism to support verification of Digital Health Certificates that are exchanged between participants of the GDHCN utilizing Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). These Digital Health Certificates may include:

  • vaccination or testing certificates;
  • routine immunization cards;
  • home-based records;
  • the International Patient Summary (IPS);
  • health worker credentials;
  • health insurance cards; and
  • other types of health documents.

Through the use of open international digital health and information technology standards, and according to the Administrative and Operational Framework, the GDHCN provides mechanisms to verify the provenance of such of Digital Health Certificates.

Functions of the Strategic Advisory Group on the Global Digital Health Certification Network

In its capacity as an advisory body to WHO, the AG shall have the following functions:

  • To advise WHO on the further evolution and uptake of open standards for the Public Key Infrastructure within the GDHCN;
  • To recommend priorities to WHO for use cases that may be operationalized by the GDHCN through new Trust Domains;
  • To identify and assess relevant open standards for Verifiable Digital Health Certificates for use within the GDHCN for prioritized use cases;
  • To review, provide feedback and make recommendations to the GDHCN technical documentation;
  • To advice WHO on the coordination with relevant Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) in the development or iteration of relevant open standards; and
  • To support WHO, advise on and suggest strategies and activities which would promote the uptake of the GDHCN based on existing experiences, resources from WHO and relevant international entities.

Operations of the Strategic Advisory Group on the Global Digital Health Certification Network

  • Open sessions: Open sessions shall be convened for the sole purpose of the exchange of non-confidential information and views, and may be attended by Observers (as defined in paragraph III.3 below).
  • Closed sessions: The sessions dealing with the formulation of recommendations and/or advice to WHO shall be restricted to the members of the AG and essential WHO Secretariat staff.
  • The quorum for AG meetings shall be two thirds of the members.
  • WHO may, at its sole discretion, invite external individuals from time to time to attend the open sessions of an advisory group, or parts thereof, as “observers”. Observers may be invited either in their personal capacity, or as representatives from a governmental institution / intergovernmental organization, or from a non-state actor. WHO will request observers invited in their personal capacity to complete a confidentiality undertaking and a declaration of interests form prior to attending a session of the advisory group. Invitations to observers attending as representatives from non-state actors will be subject to internal due diligence and conflict of interest considerations in accordance with FENSA. Observers invited as representatives may also be requested to complete a confidentiality undertaking. Observers shall normally attend meetings of the AG at their own expense and be responsible for making all arrangements in that regard. At the invitation of the Chairperson, observers may be asked to present their personal views and/or the policies of their organization. Observers will not participate in the process of adopting decisions and recommendations of the AG.
  • The AG may decide to establish smaller working groups (sub-groups of the AG) to work on specific issues. Their deliberations shall take place via teleconference or video-conference. For these sub-groups, no quorum requirement will apply; the outcome of their deliberations will be submitted to the AG for review at one of its meetings.
  • AG members are expected to attend meetings. If a member misses two consecutive meetings, WHO may end his/her appointment as a member of the AG.
  • Reports of each meeting shall be submitted by the AG to WHO (the Chief Scientist of the responsible Division). All recommendations from the AG are advisory to WHO, who retains full control over any subsequent decisions or actions regarding any proposals, policy issues or other matters considered by the AG.
  • The AG shall normally make recommendations by consensus. If, in exceptional circumstances, a consensus on a particular issue cannot be reached, minority opinions will be reflected in the meeting report.
  • Active participation is expected from all AG members, including in working groups, teleconferences, and interaction over email. AG members may, in advance of AG meetings, be requested to review meeting documentation and to provide their views for consideration by the AG.
  • WHO shall determine the modes of communication by the AG, including between WHO and the AG members, and the AG members among themselves.
  • AG members shall not speak on behalf of, or represent, the AG or WHO to any third party.
  • The working language of the AG will be English.

Who can express interest?

The Strategic Advisory Group on the Global Digital Health Certification Network (GDHCN) will be multidisciplinary, with members who have a range of technical knowledge, skills and experience relevant to technical operations of the GDHCN.

The AG shall have up to 20 members, who shall serve in their personal capacities to represent the broad range of disciplines relevant to the GDHCN. In the selection of the AG members, consideration shall be given to attaining an adequate distribution of technical expertise, geographical representation and gender balance.   

WHO welcomes expressions of interest from individuals with experience in the deployment and operations of digital public health infrastructure for the exchange of Digital Health Certificates in the following areas:

  • Computably enforceable data sharing policies;
  • Open technical specifications that support appropriate data privacy and protection measures;
  • Digital (health) wallets and linkages with other verifiable credentials;
  • Cybersecurity best practices for digital health;
  • Open digital health semantic and syntactic standards inclusive of HL7® FHIR, the International Patient Summary (IPS), and the WHO Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC).

Individuals shall be able to actively participate utilizing the working language of the Strategic Advisory Group on the Global Digital Health Certification Network, which will be English.

Submitting your expression of interest

To register your interest in being considered for the [name of the advisory group], please submit the following documents 9 Jul7 2024, 23:59h Geneva time to [email protected] using the subject line “Expression of interest for the AG on the GDHCN”:

  • A cover letter, indicating your motivation to apply and how you satisfy the selection criteria. Please note that, if selected, membership will be in a personal capacity. Therefore do not use the letterhead or other identification of your employer);
  • Your curriculum vitae; and
  • A signed and completed Declaration of Interests (DOI) form for WHO Experts, available at https://www.who.int/about/ethics/declarations-of-interest .

After submission, your expression of interest will be reviewed by WHO.  Due to an expected high volume of interest, only selected individuals will be informed. 

Important information about the selection processes and conditions of appointment

Members of WHO advisory groups (AGs) must be free of any real, potential or apparent conflicts of interest. To this end, applicants are required to complete the WHO Declaration of Interests for WHO Experts, and the selection as a member of a AG is, amongst other things, dependent on WHO determining that there is no conflict of interest or that any identified conflicts could be appropriately managed (in addition to WHO’s evaluation of an applicant’s experience, expertise and motivation and other criteria).

All AG members will serve in their individual expert capacity and shall not represent any governments, any commercial industries or entities, any research, academic or civil society organizations, or any other bodies, entities, institutions or organizations. They are expected to fully comply with the Code of Conduct for WHO Experts ( https://www.who.int/about/ethics/declarations-of-interest ). AG members will be expected to sign and return a completed confidentiality undertaking prior to the beginning of the first meeting.

At any point during the selection process, telephone interviews may be scheduled between an applicant and the WHO Secretariat to enable WHO to ask questions relating to the applicant’s experience and expertise and/or to assess whether the applicant meets the criteria for membership in the relevant AG.

The selection of members of the AGs will be made by WHO in its sole discretion, taking into account  the following (non-exclusive) criteria: relevant technical expertise; experience in international and country policy work; communication skills; and ability to work constructively with people from different cultural backgrounds and orientations .The selection of AG members will also take account of the need for diverse perspectives from different regions, especially from low and middle-income countries, and for gender balance.

If selected by WHO, proposed members will be sent an invitation letter and a Memorandum of Agreement. Appointment as a member of a AG will be subject to the proposed member returning to WHO the countersigned copy of these two documents.

WHO reserves the right to accept or reject any expression of interest, to annul the open call process and reject all expressions of interest at any time without incurring any liability to the affected applicant or applicants and without any obligation to inform the affected applicant or applicants of the grounds for WHO's action. WHO may also decide, at any time, not to proceed with the establishment of the AG, disband an existing TAG or modify the work of the AG.

WHO shall not in any way be obliged to reveal, or discuss with any applicant, how an expression of interest was assessed, or to provide any other information relating to the evaluation/selection process or to state the reasons for not choosing a member.

WHO may publish the names and a short biography of the selected individuals on the WHO internet.

AG members will not be remunerated for their services in relation to the AG or otherwise. Travel and accommodation expenses of AG members to participate in AG meetings will be covered by WHO in accordance with its applicable policies, rules and procedures.

The appointment will be limited in time as indicated in the letter of appointment.
