Great list! I've been using Grammarly for a while now, and it's been a lifesaver. The grammar and spell-checking features are spot-on, and it has improved the quality of my essays. I'll definitely check out some of the other apps to write my essays mentioned here. Thanks for sharing!

As a language enthusiast and writer, Jotterpad caught my attention. The ability to express creativity and write poems and narrative essays with this app sounds wonderful. I don't mind investing in the paid version for additional features. Thanks for introducing me to it, and I can't wait to give it a try!

Hemingway was my favorite app for essays😩 I like the UI, but the desktop version is sooooo expensive. Overall, it's fantastic..

I can't imagine my college life without Evernote! It's perfect for organizing my notes and keeping track of assignments. I love the ease of use and the fact that I can access my notes from anywhere. Definitely one of the best apps out there!

As a college student, I'm always on the lookout for useful essay apps. I've used Evernote before for note-taking, but I didn't know it had additional features for planning and organizing. I'll have to explore its Premium options.

I've been using Google Docs for a while now, but I'm open to trying other alternatives, especially offline essay apps, as I travel a lot. This list gives me plenty of options to consider!

I love the idea of using Hanx Writer for a nostalgic typewriter experience… It sounds like a fun way to get creative with my text. I'll give this app a shot with an english essay and see how it feels🙃

How We Review the Best Apps for Essay Writing

For us, it’s crucial that you receive all the necessary and true details about the reviewed apps. Hence, we fact-check the information by testing these programs out during our mystery shopping projects.

We download each application from the App Store and analyze the experience from the beginning till the very end, including convenience and educational value . We examine whether you can expect to get a clear app store experience, convenient and secure usage, helpful customer support, quick purchases, and communicative writers ready to give you the help you look for. Besides that, we take into account the versatility of available features (free and those that come at an extra cost), the selection of discounts, and price. Our team places orders for a 2-page response paper for the English & Literature class with a 24-hour deadline. The written assignments are then sent to A*Help’s partner US college professor, Sybil Low, who checks them according to the generally accepted university standards. The works that receive grades lower than 60/100 pts are perceived as unsatisfactory.

Professor Sybil shared her opinion about the type of essay we chose to order from the apps:

“Response papers to the literary works (prose, poems, book critique, or analysis) are extremely popular types of assignments in English Literature classes. For these tasks to be successful, students need to carefully read through the chosen piece, highlight the main idea of the text, and find answers to posed questions. In the essay, they will also need to outline their own attitude and key takeaways from that literature. Some learners find it hard to keep track of what they are reading and that’s why they may further face difficulties when composing their paper.”

All of the reviewed aspects are then combined to form an A*Help score. We use it to rank the apps and create a rating of the best solutions for your essay writing purposes.

SpeedyPaper: Essay writer pros

A screenshot of the SpeedyPaper: Essay writer pros homepage from the list of essay apps

You can’t miss SpeedyPaper on the App Store, as it’s the only mobile software with such a promising name. It assures you to turn your homework into an easy and fun activity with instant help from professional writers.

The application was pleasant to use. Quick loading time, easy-to-understand interface, and convenient order forms much contributed to our satisfaction. The platform also had a responsive customer support system which made the overall experience even more simple. What was a bit lacking was communication with the writer, as we didn’t get a chance to talk through the task at all.

In terms of the value-for-money index, on the other hand, the platform could benefit from an upgrade. It doesn’t provide any free features with your order, except for revisions. However, there is quite a selection of extra services that include but are not limited to speaker notes, soft copies of sources, plagiarism report, paper drafts, and summaries. As for the prices here, our 2-page essay cost $45.5. SpeedyPaper provided us with a pleasant surprise, giving us a 9% discount on the first order and adding a free PRO writer along the way.

Having reviewed our paper, Dr. Sybil graded it 62.5/100 pts, which was just a small bit higher than the accepted minimum. Here, good results were noticed for punctuation (95%), word choice (87%), and spelling (82%). Aside from that the essay had seriously deficient reference and in-text citation formatting and got the lowest mark for efficiency – only 28%.

With SpeedyPaper: Essay writer pros app we didn’t get the paper quality we expected, but it did give us a great overall user experience and some interesting as well as helpful options for additional services. Thus it lands first on the list.

AppStore – Yes, Google Play – Yes

  • Convenient to use
  • Budget-friendly
  • Great customer support

College Essay Writing Help

A screenshot of the College Essay Writing Help homepage from the list of essay writing apps

College Essay Writing Help, an app developed by Writera Ltd., positions itself as a multitool. It can help you plan your assignments, schedule the working process, and find assistance from professional writers so that your homework won’t take more time than it should.

The essay ordering tool was easy to find, instant to install, and adaptable in its usage. The loading times were quick and the order form was quite straightforward. And if we had any questions, we could definitely get them answered by the app’s support team as it proved to be responsive. The only inconveniences were that we couldn’t get to test the platform without registering first and that we didn’t get to talk out our task with the writer.

The platform also offered a few free and additional features. For example, revisions, plagiarism checks, and formatting were already included in the paper price. In our case, the response paper rounded up to $48. And if you want to get a writer’s sample, copy of used sources, or opt for progressive delivery, you would need to pay a little extra for that. College Essay Writing Help also included some discounts. For example, we could get 1 page written for free in case of the 3-page order.

Our essay ended up receiving 70.0/100 pts. It had great document formatting, good grammar (97%), and punctuation (91%). It even got 100% for objectivity. Still, the word choice was lacking (52%) and there was a huge problem with in-text citations, as they were completely missing.

In general, as an app, College Essay Writing Help did a good job ensuring smooth use and  decent value for money. So, we put it 2nd on our list. AppStore – Yes, Google Play – No

  • Convenient payment options
  • Highly assistive support
  • Order tracking opportunity
  • Need to log in every time
  • No connection with the writer

Essay Writing & Homework Help

A screenshot of the Essay Writing & Homework Help homepage from the list of essay help apps

Essay Writing & Homework Help is an educational application developed by, as stated, A. David Limited. It was designed to provide assignment help to those who needed it wherever they are.

The application was quick and easy to install and use. However, it only included a form that specified all the necessary details about the assignment. It could be filled in without registration. After the payment, which was extremely convenient since it allowed us to use both card and wallet payments, the essay ordering tool directed us to the website. Only there we could receive help from customer support agents and keep track of our orders. The communication with the writers was also supposed to be done through the website, even though we didn’t get a chance to test it out.

We need to stress here that, despite its simplicity and a satisfactory overall experience, a few points were taken down because the only thing you can do using this application is create a request for the completion of your assignment. All other manipulations like talking with support and experts, and receiving tasks and notifications are carried out through their website.

It also provided great value for money. When ordering our essay, we were given an opportunity to choose from a wide pool of additional services, which started with creating a table of contents and ended with the possibility of including an editor’s check. There also were a number of features, that were included for free, like revisions, formatting, title page, and quality check of used sources. All of that we received for the price of $66.96 for our essay. We also got a 7% discount on our first order.

The paper quality also proved to be on point. After the evaluation, the response essay we ordered was marked with 82.8/100 pts. It received the highest scores (100%) for spelling, clarity, and objectivity. Other notably good results were for grammar (98%), punctuation (95%), and acuity (97%). The paper gained the lowest score in efficiency (54%) and also had some issues with formatting.

Seeing the results across all parameters, we can say that Essay Writing & Homework Help app can be proud of getting its 3d place in our rating.

AppStore – Yes, Google Play – No

  • Easy to manage
  • Good paper quality
  • Versatile selection of extra features
  • Just an order form in the app
  • No customer-writer communication

A screenshot of the Fast HW — College Writing App homepage

According to the App Store description, Fast HW is a mobile platform designed to help students keep all their homework in one place. Here, you can set deadlines and reminders to stay organized with your assignments or search for some assistance on the side.

The app turned out to be visually appealing and intuitive. We couldn’t use the platform without registration, though. As for the order process, it was quick and easy to follow. And our profile also allowed us to keep track of our assignment’s progress. We also received great support from the tool’s agents and the writer as they were ready to discuss every task’s details with us.

Fast HW  allows you to benefit from its great variety of free features when turning here with your homework. For example, you can expect to get a plagiarism checker, unlimited revisions, and title and reference pages created for your work, all at no cost. Still, that’s everything that the app has to offer, There are no extra services to make the completion of your assignment even easier. There is also no discount or loyalty points system in this essay writing software. The average price you can expect to see here can be around $53.40. That’s how much we paid for our response paper.

After the evaluation, the essay received 70.8/100 pts. A 100% mark was given for punctuation. Spelling gained 98%, objectivity 85%, and clarity 83%. The document formatting was also noted as good with the only issue in vertical spacing. The lowest results were for efficiency (43%) and acuity (48%). The work was also missing all in-text citations.

Given the good overall experience and an acceptable paper grade, we placed Fast HW — College Writing App 4th on our list.

Writero: Hire pro writer

A screenshot of the Writero: Hire pro writer homepage

Writero is another application dedicated to providing writing assistance. It offers its users timely 24/7 help from various freelance authors. That’s something that every student would wish to have especially at the time of an upcoming deadline.

We quickly downloaded the app on our phone and went straight to check out its features. Writero had a sleek design, with quick loading times, and bug-free use. The registration process was an essential step, as we couldn’t work with the service or request help without creating an account first. By the way, the order form was simple and quick to complete. We didn’t communicate with the chosen writer about our order, unfortunately. We got a chance to talk with customer support, though, which was quite assistive. That’s why we could say that the overall experience was good with this essay writing app.

Writero didn’t offer us much in terms of value for money. The only available free feature was requesting revisions. There were a few extra services as well, like adding a copy of used sources or opting for a progressive delivery, but those were it. There also weren’t any discounts, except for the first-order offer. It was a coupon to get 1 free page with your 3-page order. Considering we paid $60 for our response paper, we didn’t get much for that price.

The paper quality came out to be decent. After the assessment by our partner professor, the work got 70.6/100 pts. Spelling and punctuation received 97%. Objectivity was also marked as good as it obtained 91%. The highest result was for clarity (100%). The lowest points in the essay were for efficiency and word choice, as they both were graded with only 51%. There also was an issue with reference formatting.

In general, Writero ensured the assistance we looked for. Even though the service wasn’t on the highest level, this app still deserved its 5th place because of adequate results.

  • Assistive customer support
  • Versatile payment options
  • Minimalistic design
  • Limited discounts

HW Helper — Essay writing help

A screenshot of the HW Helper — Essay writing help homepage

If you were worried about forgetting and not fulfilling your deadlines, HW Helper is here to help. It’s a mobile platform that can keep all your homework in one place and provide you with the assistance of professional writers so that it will always be done on time.

The application could easily be found in the App Store in the Education section. After the swift installation and required registration, we could see the platform’s interactive and bug-free interface. The form for the homework order was brief and therefore simple to complete. While filling out the instruction for our assignment we talked to one of the customer support agents who were ready to help right away. Our experience connecting with the writer was also good as he kept us posted about the task’s progress. Thus, we couldn’t complain about our experience using this app.

With value for money, however, there was a different story. We only saw two free features included in the service, which were a writer finder and a 100-word preview of the performer’s work. As for the extra features, there were no options at all. There also weren’t any discounts or coupons, as well as no loyalty programs. Considering the price at the platform averages $63 for a two-page essay, that’s not such a great collection of services.

The results of the completed paper were adequate. The evaluation showed that our task was graded 74.1/100 pts. 100% was given for spelling, clarity, and objectivity. Grammar and punctuation were also great receiving 97% and 96% respectively. Efficiency was the lowest only getting 51%. There were also issues with citation formatting (56%) and referencing. In-text citations were all missing.

HW Helper was a good app to use, even despite some shortcomings. Hence we placed this mobile software at the 6th position on the list.

  • Helpful support
  • Free preview of writer’s work
  • Decent paper quality
  • No additional services

Essay Typer App

A screenshot of the Essay Typer App homepage

Essay Typer is a product of 24Task LLC and a global freelancing platform, where you can search for any type of professional to help with your assignments, including writing papers. So we decided to check whether you could really find good writers there.

We quickly downloaded the app and had to register right away as it didn’t allow users without an account. The interface was smart but nothing special. It was hard to manage the service because of the bugs in the software and the long loading times. We contacted customer support with that problem alongside other questions and got an assistive representative to help us out. Still, we managed to place our order, as the form was short and straightforward. What was great as well, was our communication with the writer as they discussed all the task’s details with us directly. As such, the overall experience was good enough.

Essay Typer is a bidding platform that allows you to choose your specialist on your own depending not only on the task but also on your preferable budget. You can talk over any additional services with your dedicated expert but you can’t choose any options in the order form. On the other hand, this app provides its customers with a versatile retention system, that includes loyalty and referral programs. There’s also a first-order discount coupon for 10%. The prices here can get low. For example, we paid $36 for the 2 pages of our response paper.

The quality of the final work wasn’t as great though. It came into our mailbox marked with only 61.3/100 pts, which wasn’t high above the grading minimum. Objectivity and spelling received 100%, and clarity got 91% which were the only high results here. Most other indexes, like efficiency, grammar, and word choice, received 51%. There were also issues with references and in-text citations.

As a bidding-based service, Essay Typer allows you to choose your own writer and an acceptable price which makes this app a perfect option for those on a budget. That’s why we include it as the 7th option on the list.

  • Great discount programs
  • Assistive support agents
  • Easy customer-writer connection
  • Long loading & bugs
  • Low quality of work

MyWriter — Freelance Writers

A screenshot of the MyWriter — Freelance Writers homepage

MyWriter is another freelance bidding platform focused only on writing services. So, if you are looking for a way to complete your paper without spending much time, you might find the right expert here.

This app can be a bit harder to find as it’s located in the Productivity category in the App Store. We still found and quickly installed it without any problems. Having registered right away and started using the program, we experienced some bugs. Especially when talking with support which provided us with some advice. The order process was also easy, as the form was rather straightforward. We got a rather communicative writer who was ready to discuss all the details of our assignment.  There also was a chance to track the process of our expert’s work through the profile. Overall, we had a satisfactory experience using MyWriter

The value for money is an aspect that largely needs to be worked on. The app only provided two free features, such as revision and plagiarism check, and there were no extra services. There weren’t any coupons, loyalty, or referral points at all as well. We were a bit disappointed not to get any offers from the platform considering we paid $63 for our paper.

As for the quality of work, it was rather middling. The response paper received a grade just slightly above the accepted minimum – 62.5/100 pts. The highest result was for punctuation – 95%. The word choice and spelling were also adequate, getting 87% and 82%. The lowest points were for efficiency, as it only got 28%. There also were a lot of problems with citations and referencing.

As such, MyWriter landed 8th place, considering good usability, but lower value for money and paper quality.

  • Intuitive design
  • Can choose a writer for a specific budget
  • Free plagiarism check
  • No additional features

EssayBot: Write Essay For You

A screenshot of the EssayBot: Write Essay For You homepage

EssayBot is another app from 24TASK LLC and so utilizes the identical platform as its sister program Essay Typer.

It has the same easy-to-understand bidding system and an order form. It also faces the same problem with bugs that appear during usage. However, Essay Bot had a more clear app store experience with included screenshots and clear functionality descriptions. On the other hand, when using this app for our essay writing we didn’t get as smooth customer support guidance as we had hoped for. Although our writer was communicative enough.

This app, sadly, didn’t have much to offer in terms of value for money as well. There were no free or additional services, however, there was the same amount of discounts and carbon-copy loyalty and referral programs. The price was even lower as this time we paid only $26 for the task.

Yet, the paper quality came out different. The work received only 53.8/100 pts, which was lower than the grading minimum. So, this paper could rightfully be called disappointing. There were some good indexes, for example, spelling (80%), punctuation (86%), and objectivity (75%). The poorest results were in efficiency and acuity as they both were marked with 38%. There were no in-text citations and big problems with reference formatting.

All in all, EssayBot lands 9th and last on this list, but the results of the app’s paper evaluation should speak bigger than its rating.

  • Allows to choose writers
  • Low paper quality

Buyer’s Guide to Help Find the Best App for Essay Writing

Reading through reviews is a great way to find out whether the app is suitable for your needs. Still, it can get quite confusing as to which services you need to look for in the first place. The app store has numerous mobile software options even within the same category, so how do you know which ones are worth your attention? We’ve created this list of features that you should pay attention to when looking for an application to write your essays.

Convenience & Usability

Apps are all about comfort. They should be user-friendly, meaning they need to be simple to manage. A pleasant interface is essential, as it makes half of the ease of use. The loading time shouldn’t take more than a few seconds. Also, look for apps that offer a smooth ordering process: forms should be straightforward and quick to fill in. If the option to track your task’s progress is on the table that’s a great plus. This way you can know that your work will be ready on time.

Support System

Customer support is an important aspect of any service, and application in particular. You need to be able to report issues (bugs for example) or ask questions when something is unclear. So, always make your choice in favor of those programs that have a chat (better if 24/7 available) or at least provide a way to contact a manager (via their system or email). This will ensure that you get any of your problems resolved quickly.

Discount Programs

Special offers are always a plus as they can make the service more affordable for you. They also show that the platform cares about its users and wants them to be able to stay. First-order discounts are good indicators, however, also notice if there are any opportunities to get some % off if you are a loyal customer. This will help you save some money in the long run.

Service Quality

Lastly, you need to find out whether the app you decide to use for your essay writing has skillful performers. It’s hard to learn that just from the first glance at the app store. To find out this information you will need to dig deeper and turn to reviews from previous clients. However, if you don’t want to go far, you can check out our A*Help reviews which are based on real-use experience.

best essay help apps

Writing essays is a skill you need to pass many high school classes and even college or university courses. However, not everyone has the greatest writing skills, and even then, great writers sometimes don’t have the time to write everything.

Plagiarism is another common concern when in school and should be taken seriously, considering it can get you kicked out of education. Instead of paying a hefty fee for essay writing services, take advantage of the best essay writing apps available to help you score your next A+.

Why software can help improve your essay writing

Using software, especially AI-powered platforms, can help streamline the writing process by offering features like templates, structured frameworks, content generation as well as grammar and spell-check.

Essay writing software allows you to organize your thoughts more effectively and often in a distraction-free work environment. They can also aid in enhancing the overall quality of your writing by offering savvy suggestions for improving sentence or paragraph structure, vocabulary usage and flow within your essays.

Benefits of essay writing software

  • Improved Organization: Essay writing software helps users organize their thoughts more effectively, creating a structured framework for their writing tasks.
  • Enhanced Productivity: These tools provide a distraction-free work environment, allowing writers to focus solely on their essays without any interruptions.
  • Content Generation: Some platforms like Jasper assist in generating content ideas, providing valuable insights and suggestions to kickstart the writing process.
  • Vocabulary Enhancement: By offering suggestions for alternative word choices, essay writing software helps enrich the vocabulary used in your essays.
  • Structural Guidance: These tools provide feedback on sentence and paragraph structure, helping users improve the overall coherence and flow of their writing.
  • Quality Improvement: Essay writing software contributes to enhancing the overall quality of your work by offering valuable tips and recommendations to refine your writing.

Elements of an A+ essay you can’t ignore

  • Clear Thesis Statement: An A+ essay must have a strong and clear thesis statement that presents the main argument or point of view.
  • Comprehensive Research: Extensive research with credible sources is crucial for providing in-depth analysis and supporting arguments effectively.
  • Proper Structure and Formatting: The essay should have a well-organized structure with a logical flow of ideas from introduction to conclusion.
  • Critical Analysis: Demonstrating critical thinking skills by evaluating information, presenting counter arguments, and offering insightful perspectives.
  • Originality: Strive for original ideas and unique perspectives to set your essay apart and showcase intellectual creativity.
  • Effective Use of Evidence: Incorporate relevant evidence and examples to strengthen arguments and demonstrate a deep understanding of the topic.
  • Meticulous Proofreading: Pay attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and overall writing mechanics to ensure clarity and coherence in your essay.

How to write a strong essay thesis

To write a strong essay thesis statement, you should begin by clearly identifying the main topic or argument of your essay. Your thesis statement should be concise and specific, providing a roadmap for the reader on what to expect in the rest of the paper.

Make sure your thesis is arguable and not a statement of fact. Next, consider the key points you want to make in support of your thesis. These points will guide the structure of your essay and should be logically organized for a coherent flow of ideas.

The final step in writing a strong essay thesis is to revise and refine it. This step is crucial because it allows you to improve the clarity, coherence, and overall effectiveness of your thesis statement.

During revision, pay attention to the language you have used and make sure it is precise and specific. Consider whether your thesis accurately reflects the main argument or topic of your essay.

I find this tool to be useful and…

I find this tool to be useful and effective. I used it for almost all of my writing assignments while in undergrad school and continue to use it in grad school. The 2 things I have found that I would change are 1. Some of the words in the generated reference are capitalized, when they should not be, according to APA 7th. Make sure and proofread what you get from the citation generator. I have lost points in the past because of not looking over what I was given. 2. I always set my parameters to the font and size I am using for my paper, however, when I copy and paste my reference list or in-text citation, the font always seems to be wrong. Not a huge problem, just a bit inconvenient. Otherwise, I would have given 5 out of 5 stars.

I am very grateful to have come across this site. Alongside my APA manual, it has not led me wrong, and the citations line up with what's in my manual & saves me a great deal of time. To whomever created this..thank you!

I have used this site for generating citations. I love that I can copy and paste a URL and the whole citation is available. It is saved on the website, and it can easily be copied to the clipboard. The parenthetical as well as narrative citations are also available. This has saved me so much time!

Writing an essay is not that difficult once you have all your sources in place and an outline of your major ideas. There are essay writing apps that help you achieve this. So, we’ve made a list of the top ten essay writing tools that can help you improve your essay and score better grades.

Of course, when we speak of essay writing apps, we mean essay editing and writing tools that improve your work and NOT apps that provide ready-made essays. That is cheating, and it can get you expelled from your course.

As your loyal editors , we want the best for you. So, none of the entries in our list of top ten essay writing tools will help you cheat. They will, of course, help improve your essay to make it your best work. If you’re looking for a list of the best essay editing services, visit this article .

Can writing tools help improve your essay?

Well, they certainly help.

The problem with automated tools and software is that they don’t understand writing like human beings do. So, editing tools like Grammarly or Hemingway are likely to point out mistakes where there are none or fail to spot more complex errors.

Obviously, a human editor is always more reliable than software. But it can help to have a writing assistant that improves your essay while you write it. So, write your best essay using these tools, and then be sure to send it for proofreading.

Top ten essay writing tools

Our top ten essay writing tools are a diverse list. They help you in various essay writing tasks such as planning your essay, writing it, improving it, and getting feedback when it’s complete.   So, let’s begin!

1. Essay Map

This tool helps you develop an outline for your essay. Although it is targeted toward school-aged students and not college-going researchers, its basic format is helpful. It helps you develop a map of your central ideas around which you can write your essay.

The main structure, although limiting, is also the basic outline that you would expect from essays. There are five main checkpoints: introduction, idea 1, idea 2, idea 3, and conclusion. You can also jot down three key points for each of these ideas.

2. MindNode

This isn’t strictly an essay writing app, but it can help you develop your thoughts into an outline. It has many modes which many can be useful in your mind mapping process .

You can use the quick entry feature to jot down ideas as soon as you get them. From there, you can develop detailed notes using the notes feature. You can then use the outlining mode to develop an outline for your essay.

Other features like the focus mode and task tracker are also useful when you have a lot on your plate. Which, we understand, happens often as a student! Assignments pile up and focusing on individual essays gets tougher. That’s exactly where this app can prove helpful.

3. Evernote

Evernote is a note-making and planning app, but also more than that. It is designed to help organize tasks and deadlines, which is extremely useful to students. It connects to Google Calendar, which is an added bonus.

The app allows you to create tasks in your notes and assign dates, flags, and markers to them. It also lets you scan important documents, upload useful content in various formats, and save relevant web pages.

This tool can be your space to store all your essay-related material. It also provides a connection through all your devices, letting you work offline as well.

You can save the finished map on your device or print it out. This is a great tool, especially for people who struggle with outlines or are new to developing structured essays .

4. Voice Dictation

Voice recognition technology has advanced enough to allow users to write entire essays with just their voice. Suffice it to say, the voice dictation tool is indispensable for people who can’t use a keyboard.

Even if you’re just a student with far too much on your mind, the tool is useful. After all, using note-taking tools to make elaborate mind maps isn’t for everyone. People have different methods of working, and speaking our thoughts out loud as they come is one of them!

The tool helps you churn out a great essay without following a set process or format. It’s also time-efficient. Just type the whole thing out with your voice, and all you have to do later is refine it.

Voice Dictation also allows you to utter simple commands to provide punctuation, like “new line” or “comma.”

5. Grammarly

Grammarly is one of the best essay editing tools, offering users a choice between American and British English. Its A.I. helps you find problems with spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style to help you write better essays.

The free version highlights basic grammar mistakes while the paid version optimizes your use of language. This means that it flags things like repetitive phrases, vague wording, and excessive use of words.

Grammarly is available as both a download for MS Word and as a Chrome extension for Google Docs or other online formats.

6. Hemingway

The app makes your writing clear and direct. It highlights lengthy and complex sentences so you can reconsider whether splitting them up would be a good idea. The app keeps you aware of how you use adverbs, passive voice, complex phrases, and lengthy sentences by using color-coded highlights.

The app is named after the American writer Ernest Hemingway, who is known for his no-nonsense style of writing. It helps improve your essay to make it clear, direct, and forceful.

You can use the app or upload your text on the web page to get similar results. Be cautious about taking the bot’s advice, however, because it is prone to machine error.

7. Cliché Finder

Everyone uses clichés while writing. However, if you use them too often, your writing becomes trite and uninteresting. This tool helps you avoid exactly that.

The checker uses a unique algorithm that marks any overused and stale phrases in your writing. Making changes based on these suggestions is completely up to you, but it’s certainly important to identify patterns in your writing.

The tool isn’t restricted to essays and can be used to identify clichés in any form of writing. Just upload your text on the web page and you’re good to go!

8. Thesaurus.com

Half the struggle in writing an essay is to figure out the exact word you need to use! There’s always a word that’s at the tip of your tongue but somehow, keeps eluding you. This is exactly the case where a thesaurus can come in handy.

Just put the word you can think of, and the tool will provide a number of similar words. You can find the exact word you’re looking for, or even end up with a better alternative!

The thesaurus also helps when you’re referring to something often, but don’t want to use the same word too much. The tool gives you variation and helps avoid repetitiveness.

If you’re looking for the exact antonym of a word, the thesaurus can help here, too! Just scroll down and you’ll find a variety of antonyms.

9. Citation Machine

Perfect citations are key to scoring well on academic writing tests. There are methods to cite sources in academic essays, like APA , MLA , or Chicago . These citation styles follow different rules, and you can’t afford to fumble between them.

Citation Machine is a quick, time-efficient tool to generate citations in your desired style format. It allows you to create citations in more than 7000 styles, and also keeps a record of your entries. So, once you’re done citing all your sources, you also get a ready bibliography!

For its paid plans, the tool offers a plagiarism check, expert help on your essays, and other useful features. It’s certainly a great tool for any essay writer!

10. Paper Rater

This tool comes into play once you’re done writing. Upload your essay and the tool will give you feedback using Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

The tool checks your text for grammar and plagiarism. It also offers suggestions based on its evaluation. For school students, it also gives a score!

Of course, feedback from an A.I. tool has many limitations. No matter what essay writing tool you use, it can’t match the expertise that an essay editing service has.

So once you’re done with your essay, just send it over to us for some real feedback. Good luck!

cost of help for assessment

Sometimes writing an essay from scratch   is just so overwhelming that you can’t get it done within the specified deadline.

You have to do brainstorm the topic, do preliminary research by evaluating primary and secondary sources, create an outline, write your first draft, and refine your work.

Add to this countless classes to sit through and additional assignments to complete and schoolwork can be quite overwhelming.

Thankfully, Help for Assessment has developed a platform that can help you get your essay written fast.

We combine technology and human intervention to help you write an essay fast while maintaining the uniqueness of every paper.

Help for Assessment is the most competitive writing solution online.

Whether you need:

  • Help with dissertation
  • A term paper completed in the last minutes

  • Help with Theory of Knowledge

Help for Assessment is the right platform for you.

2. Grammarly

Grammarly

Grammarly is the best spelling and grammar checker app on the web.

Available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, Grammarly helps you to refine your writing by fixing spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, word choices, long sentences, wordiness, fragments, and more.

Its powerful algorithm checks your essay for correctness in seconds, and it does that automatically without requiring human intervention.

We highly recommend Grammarly because it allows you to write in different formats and styles, including academic documents.

While it’s not useful for long-form text formatting, Grammarly is the best technology for students who need a free grammar checker and those who are on a tight budget.

3. Evernote

Evernote

You have to do in-depth research to write a comprehensive essay on an assigned topic or a topic of your choice.

For your research phase to be effective, you have to consider using an app that allows you to take notes as you go. Evernote is our best recommendation.

Evernote is one of the best cross-platform note-taking apps, which allows you to take clipped web content and hand written notes from your Android, iOS, and PC device.

We do recommend that you use this app to organize your research materials, including your primary and secondary sources ,  annotated bibliography, and essay outline.

Even more helpful is the To-Do list feature, which allows you to organize yourself so you can start and complete your essay writing in time.

In a way, Evernote has an interface similar to many word processor. With rich features that allow you to format text accordingly, similar to what you can do with Microsoft Word, Evernote lets you plan, organize, and even write your essay wherever you’re.

4. FocusWriter

FocusWriter

FocusWriter isn’t feature rich, but it’s the best writing app to install and use if you need a distraction free writing experience.

Available for Linux and Windows PCs, this free, open-source writing lets you write quicker without looking anywhere else. With FocusWriter, it’s just you and a blank page.

You aren’t getting many formatting options with FocusWriter, so it might not be useful for editing.

However, we do like that it takes over an entire desktop when you launch it, so you’ll never get distracted notifications from social media, emails, and other desktop apps.

Some of the best features of this essay-writing app include customizable themes, multi-document support, spell-checking, portable model, typewriter sound effect, timers and alarms, and basic ODT file support.

5. Turnitin

turnitin

The last thing learning institutions want to deal with is students who copy other people’s work and use it as their own.

To put it simply, plagiarism is one for the biggest mistakes you should avoid when writing your essay, and the best way to do that is to use Turnitin.

The goal of this robust web-based application is to uphold academic integrity, a strong theme that has seem hundreds of colleges and universities integrating the use of their system into their learning culture.

Today, Turnitin can detect purchased essays   with copied content, even if the act of plagiarism in question was unintentional.

Based on our understanding, Turnitin is a helpful tool to add to your list of essay apps because it helps you to ensure you submit high quality and original essays to your instructors for review.

6. Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

It’s easy to forget Microsoft Word when talking about essay writing apps for students, but it’s one of the market leaders with a ton of great features.

Even with competing solutions such as the Libre Office Suite available for free download, Microsoft Word continues to become popular by the day – with a user base that just keeps growing.

Microsoft has been working on this app since 1983. With uncountable revamps over the years, we’ve seen Microsoft add dozens of cool features that easily extend the functionality of the app.

That way, you can write essays and format them appropriately before submitting them to your professor.

With Microsoft Word, you can create documents with standard academic formatting, add images if your assignment requires you to, check grammar and spelling mistakes, and even including 3D models if your instructor ever asks you to do so.

Microsoft Word isn’t readily available for free download on the brand’s website. But you can always get a copy from a friend who has an active license.

Also, there’s an app for Android and iOS , and these ones are available for free download. So whether you want to create content on your laptop or you want to write that essay on the go, you will find this app incredibly useful.

7. The Hemingway App

The Hemingway App

The Hemingway App is a web-based writing solution that deserves a shout out, in part because it’s 100% free to use.

Here’s the thing:

You’re going to make many mistakes when writing your essay, and that’s a completely natural process.

Yet given that you cannot submit that assignment without editing your piece, you need a solution that can help you identify and fix the errors and do so very fast.

That is where the Hemingway App comes in.

The Hemingway App is a powerful web-based editor that allows you to make the necessary changes on your essay as you write.

The Hemingway app not only help you fix grammar issues and correct spelling mistakes, it also makes it easy for you to improve the readability of your content so your essay is easy to read and understand.

Unlike Grammarly, the Hemingway App won’t go deep into grammatical lessons. However, what you’ll love about it is its ability to assess the readability of your essay and give you suggestions that you can use to improve your assignment.

The best thing about Hemingway Editor is that it’s free to use. You don’t even need to register an account online to use it. All you have to do is to go straight to the website and start editing your essay. It’s that simple.

8. Hanx Writer Review

Hanx Writer Review

You deserve an excellent writing experience right from the moment you start working on your essay to the time you finish, and there’s no better way to do that than use an essay-writing app that performs flawlessly.

The Hanx Writer is one such solution, an option you can use in place of Microsoft Office.

This is a mobile-based writing solution that’s available for iOS users.

Unlike many writing apps ever built, Hanx Writer immerses you into a realistic writing experience of a real typewriter on the iPad.

To be more realistic, the developers take the sound and movements of an actual typewriter and put them right in the app. So you can get a more realistic touch of hammer, carriage, and carriage return lever.

People do have mixed opinion about this writing app, and we believe it’s a good consideration for students who want to write their essays with the least interruption possible.

Moreover, you’re running this on a mobile device, which means you can take it anywhere with you to work on your essay whenever you have something to add on the document.

To be clear, Hanx writer doesn’t allow you to export your writing as text file because it saves your work as PDF document. Also, creating a new document can be somewhat tiresome because you have to tap a number of menus.

9. Canva

Canva

Canva may not fit tightly into the category of writing app, but we think it’s an important content creation tool to use in the case where you have to include graphs and images in your essay .

It’s by far the most popular graphic design software on the web with over 30 million active users.

It’s available for free use, although there’s a pro plan that gives you access to thousands of pre-built graphics, illustrations, infographic, and images that you can use straight out of the box.

So if your instructor ever asks you to include graphs, charts, and images in your essay, and you feel like you have no idea where to get them, Canva can make a really big difference.

10. Pro Writing Aid

Pro Writing Aid

Pro Writing Aid is another popular solution that can help you write great essays any time.

Like Grammarly, the tool helps you check you essay for grammar and spelling mistakes, so you can submit an error-free assignment to your instructor.

There is a free version of the app and the paid membership starts at just $20 a month. So if you’ve been searching for the best alternative to Grammarly, the Pro Writing Aid can be a great choice.

Final Thoughts

While there are many apps that you can use to plan, organize, outline and write your essay, we found these 5 to be the most helpful ones. They are not only easy to use, but are also available for free access.

The option to upgrade to a premium package, if any, will more often than not be optional.

Since you don’t need many rich features to write your essay from start to finish, the free versions of these apps with the basic features should be more than enough.

Lastly, don’t feel lost if you’re struggling with your essay. Check out our write my essay for me service and let us know how we can be of help. Help for Assessment replies within 5 minutes.

Getting a passing grade on an essay assignment is difficult if students don’t know how to organize their ideas. Bloggers can also not get high SEO rankings when they plagiarize their writing.

If you’re looking for applications that help you write better essays, I compiled a list of the best essay writing software. These apps include both free and paid programs. I included tools to help you improve your grammar and an app that writes essays for you.

10 Best Essay Writing Apps

2022 05 19 12

Grammarly is one of the best writing apps you can try for your essays. It helps you perfect your essay or any writing project by giving detailed explanations for its corrections.

For instance, if you mistakenly use “see” instead of “sea” in your sentence, Grammarly will tell you why it’s wrong. This editing software is the most popular writing tool because it focuses on correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery.

While it doesn’t help you summarize or format your essays, it can fix issues like your spelling, grammar, writing style, and punctuation. Grammarly lets you set your writing goals so it can tailor its corrections according to your essay’s intent, audience, and emotion.

Grammarly Premium gives you access to a plagiarism checker. It examines your document against billions of websites and articles while providing links to any duplicate content.

The editing tool has a more straightforward interface than ProWritingAid. Or you can download the free extension for Chrome and Safari if you want to receive real-time suggestions on Google Docs.

Grammarly is also available as a desktop or mobile application, Grammarly Keyboard. The keyboard app quickly spots spelling mistakes and other issues on your text messages, email, and social media.

  • Built-in spelling and grammar checker.
  • Produces more grammar reports than other apps.
  • Guarantees original content through a plagiarism checker.
  • Multiple platform availability.
  • Not ideal for long-form writing.
  • Free version is very basic.

Pro Writing Aid

ProWritingAid Checker

ProWritingAid is a cloud-based tool that enhances your writing in different ways. It’s not a word processor or rewriter for essay writers but an editor for users who want to improve their grammar and spelling.

The premium version can spot over 20 errors in your essay, including repeated sentence starts and over-reliance on adverbs. The writer can also take advantage of readability reports, sticky sentences, and subject-verb disagreement.

The online editor not only corrects your grammatical mistakes. It also helps you become a better writer. For example, using adverbs and the passive voice are not necessarily “errors.” But avoiding these elements can help your essay readers engage with your content better.

Aside from checking grammar, ProWritingAid also scans your essay for plagiarism. It ensures your document is original and free from duplications. The essay writing software provides a link to the source so you can correctly cite it.

ProWritingAid has browser extensions and a desktop version. The powerful tool also features a 14-day trial for writers who want to test it first. You can also use it in Google Docs, Scrivener, and Chrome.

This advanced grammar checker is available for $20 per month or $79 per year.

  • Simple interface.
  • Wide platform availability.
  • Twenty-five types of writing reports.
  • Free trial.
  • Lifetime plan.
  • Unnecessary features like sticky sentences.
  • Slow loading time.

Writing essays becomes more motivating when you use FreeMind. This software isn’t your typical editing tool that performs grammar checking. It helps you achieve daily goals in writing through structure diagrams and project tracking.

best essay help apps

This app for writing essays improves your writing habit by letting you add subtasks for each activity. It will allow you to organize your essay ideas on any topic to produce impactful writing.

Another extra feature of Free Mind is its time recording element. Brainstorm your work, use colors, and take advantage of DES encryption to produce and protect your mind maps.

  • Helps users make flowcharts and mind maps for essays.
  • Perfect for other types of project planning.
  • Protects your work from being lost.
  • Completely free.
  • No grammar-checking tool.
  • Difficult to use for first-timers.
  • Not specifically designed for essay writing.

Edusson

Among the numerous writing applications, Edusson is the most interesting for its wide variety of features. The essay writing app writes essays for you, ensuring they are free from grammar mistakes and have a proper sentence structure .

Content writers will save more time coming up with a topic idea for their next post. An additional feature of Edusson is its self-help resources. The website also includes essay samples its writers produce to let everyone know they make high-quality papers.

Edusson does not offer offline mode because it’s not an AI writer. The app lets you order assignments for a real writer to write. These writers also ensure that your work is free from grammatical mistakes.

Whether you write blog content, academic papers, or magazine articles, this assignment writer is for you. Use it on your desktop or download the mobile application for more writing ideas.

  • Real writers help you with your essay.
  • Ideal for other types of writing.
  • Easy to use for beginners.
  • May take time before you get your assignment.

SimpleNote

If you’re looking for an essay writing app with a basic interface made for note-taking only, Simplenote is your best choice. Like other writing tools, it lets you jot down ideas and concepts for your document. But it doesn’t have advanced features.

You can organize your text through Markdown, a standard syntax like HTML but more straightforward. If you’re a web developer or a programmer, you know how fantastic markdown is for readability.

Long-form writers benefit the least from Simplenote because the app is developed for hand-written notes and ideas. It also doesn’t feature a virtual proofreader, file importing, and comprehensive formatting.

  • Best app for writing notes.
  • Markdown support.
  • No grammar and spell check.
  • No automatic writing tool.
  • No file imports and lists.

Libre Office Writer

Libra Office Writer

Writer is LibreOffice’s app for essay writers that is available for free. Its free yet advanced writing abilities are inspired by Microsoft Word. It has basic features like font styles, sizes, insert pictures, layout settings, and referencing. It also displays your character count.

The desktop app is ideal for academic writing that requires strict formats and layouts. It’s an excellent alternative to Google Docs and Word, the most popular word processors on the market.

One downside to Libre Office Writer is its lack of a built-in grammar and spelling checker. You need to edit your work on third-party tools like Grammarly for corrections.

  • Free alternative to MS Word.
  • Comprehensive formatting and layout options.
  • Reputable word processor.
  • No grammar checker.

Scribus

Scribus is a fantastic choice among writers who want to produce aesthetically pleasing projects. Millions of writers use this software for reports, magazines, academic writing, or even your personal journal.

The open-source tool doesn’t help you organize your ideas or correct grammar. Instead, it focuses on one aspect of your writing: your book layout. You can use the Layers, Outline, Styles, and Properties to style every page of your book.

Many believe actual writing starts with the look of your document. Scribus is like a basic version of Adobe InDesign and Affinity Publisher. Use it for your essays, academic texts, and self-published books.

  • Improves the layout of your written work.
  • Free.
  • No option for checking your spelling and grammar.
  • Dated design.

Focus Writer

Focus Writer is a free word processing app you can use as an alternative to MS Word and Google Docs. The distraction-free writing app has a focus mode that blocks other windows and menus. All you have to do is write on the blank page.

But the essay writing services also offer several formatting options for different aspects of writing. Move your cursor upwards to reveal the menu. Focus Writer lets you set goals for your daily word count with a percentage bar displayed below to show your improvement.

You can use Focus Writer for simple essays, personal thoughts, and critiques.

But I don’t recommend it for academic writing. It also doesn’t have a built-in file editor for spelling errors.

  • Straightforward interface.
  • Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
  • Limited export formats.
  • No collaboration options.
  • No writing templates.

Evernote

Evernote is a note-taking application for hand-written notes. You can create checklists, to-do lists, and other organizational elements in individual files. As an academic writing software tool, Evernote uses thematic Notebooks to help you group your writing projects into subjects.

One of the most valuable features of this app is its template gallery. The dozens of templates make Evernote a common choice of essay writers in work and school. It also has a clipper tool where you can take clippings and snippets from any site.

Evernote is also the only application with features for optical character recognition technology. That means this app for writing papers also searches scanned images of hand-writing.

  • It helps users write to-do lists, notes, etc.
  • Web clipping.
  • Clean interface.
  • Collaboration features.
  • Basic free version.
  • It keeps changing the layout and startup screen.

Jasper

Jarvis or Jasper AI is not a proofreading software or a note-taking tool. It’s an app that writes essays for you without the user having to do anything. It works using Natural Language Processing to write paragraphs of blog articles for you.

The main focus of Jarvis is SEO. All the pieces of content it automatically writes ensure they will rank high on search engine result pages. It can also finish your first draft two to five times faster than a human.

This artificial intelligence software is perfect for content writers who must produce dozens of essays weekly. Use this tool for social media posts, ad copies, and blog posts.

  • Automatic rewriter.
  • SEO integration.
  • Doesn’t include a plagiarism checker.
  • The final piece of writing still requires human editing.

Is There a Software That Will Write Essays for You?

Many desktop and mobile software can automatically write essays for you. These “bots” are powered by artificial intelligence to make the writing sound human-like.

Some essay writers only require you to insert keywords or a specific topic. Then, it will create everything else for you. Jarvis or Jasper AI lets you pick a template, narrow the subject, and click “Generate AI content.”

Other AI writers need you to copy and paste a piece of text from other sources. Then, it will rewrite the entire content for you. Quillbot is a paraphrasing tool that produces plagiarism-free content for you. It can also summarize, shorten, or expand your writing.

Best Free Essay Writing Software

The best free essay writing tools you should have are ProWritingAid and FreeMind. The former is editing software that offers spelling, grammar, and style correction, while the latter helps you brainstorm your next essay. These two software programs are completely free.

Use FreeMind to plan your next essay. Different mind maps, time recording, and project tracking features will help you brainstorm your topic.

Once you’re done writing your essay, run it on ProWritingAid to check for issues. It provides over 20 writing reports to make your written document error-free and readable.

Research Paper Writing App

Some essay writing apps are specially developed for writing research papers, theses, and dissertations. For example, Libre Office Writer has all the formatting settings you need to write your research, including page numbers, text alignment, and a bibliography.

Another research paper writing app you can consider is Evernote. Although I wouldn’t recommend writing your research on this app, you can use this tool to make notes. Use it to organize your review of related literature, analyze your findings, or structure your intro.

There’s a Tool for Every Writing Goal

So many tools exist to help you plan, write, and edit your essays differently. I hope the list of best essay writing software stated above saves you more time and makes you a better writer.

My top choices are ProWritingAid and Grammarly because writers in all fields need them for proofreading purposes. Which essay writing tool are you trying first?

When You Write

22 Best Writing Apps: The First-Choice Writing Tools in 2024

Different kinds of writers—authors, bloggers, and freelancers, etc.—require different writing apps that have features best suited for the type of writing.

Therefore, finding the best writing apps is a unique undertaking for each writer. The market is flooded with lots of writing tools but finding the best writing software for you takes a lot of effort.

But if you’re reading this article, it means you have decided to research before committing to a particular tool.

Right decision!

For your convenience, I’ve compiled a list of the best writing apps that can make you a better writer and help increase your productivity (Hint – Grammarly and Scrivener topped the list).

Since the apps are very different in nature and can be used as complements, the numbering has been done randomly, although I’ve deliberately placed some of the best at the beginning of this list.

The Best 3 Writing Apps

Prowritingaid, the best writing software, 1. grammarly.

Attribute: Best Overall Grammar Checker .

Grammarly is the go-to grammar checking app for writers, especially freelancers.

It performs rigorous checks on your text—whether it’s for typos, punctuation and spelling mistakes, or readability.

But it isn’t a basic grammar checker. Grammarly comes with multiple other editing features that help you with things like passive voice, long or complex sentences and also offers broader vocabulary, among other capabilities.

Once the checks are done, Grammarly furnishes you with writing metrics and readability scores.

That’d be enough to convince most writers.

But that’s not all… it has its own plagiarism checker that scours online and offline sources, looking for similar texts to yours.

Supported Systems : macOS, iOS, Windows, and Android.

Pricing: Grammarly offers both free and paid plans. Grammarly Premium (for individuals) starts at $11.66. You can get Grammarly Business for as low as $12.50.

2. Scrivener

Attribute: Best Book Writing Software.

Just like Grammarly owns the grammar checking terrain, Scrivener owns the book-writing software field.

Developed by writer Keith Blount (about 14 years ago), this is what a tailor-made author’s app looks like.

Scrivener is the full package as far as book writing is concerned. It has features that make it a combination of a typewriter, ring binder, and a scrapbook.

It is equipped with all the features to take your book or any other long-form writing from conception to the last full stop of your draft. It comes with features such as the corkboard, outliner, inspector, pre-set formatting, templates, file importing, metatags, automated document listing, and many other important book writing features.

Scrivener is perfect for writers in many genres; for example, it can be used by novelists, scriptwriters, academics, lawyers, translators, journalists, and students.

Supported Systems : macOS, iOS, and Windows.

Pricing: Scrivener has 4 pricing plans. Scrivener for macOS is at $49, iOS costs $19.99 ,  Scrivener for Windows costs $45, and the bundled plan for both macOS and Windows, which is $80.

3. ProWritingAid

Attribute: Excellent Tool for Self-editing

ProWritingAid is one of Grammarly’s best competitors in the Grammar checking category, and what you get from this tool is pretty close to Grammarly.

Plus, it is more affordable than Grammarly.

It’s an excellent proofreading and grammar checking software that improves your writing in terms of grammar, style checking, and overall quality.

ProWritingAid helps strengthen your writing by analyzing it and providing in-depth reports on areas such as ambiguous sentences, grammar, transitions, abstract words, overused words, and other important elements.

ProWritingAid also provides articles, videos, and quizzes that improve your learning curve and make writing a bit more fun and interactive.

Supported Systems : macOS and Windows.

Pricing: ProWritingAid has free and paid packages.   Its monthly plan costs $20. And the yearly and lifetime plans cost $79 & $399, respectively.

4. Microsoft Word

Attribute: Best Word Processor.

For decades, Microsoft Word has been the most popular writing tool around the world. Functionality and preferences aside, it is still regarded as the best word processing software ever.

In fact, I believe that most of the word processing apps don’t just want to emulate MS Word’s features; they want to be better.

But they haven’t been successful in that endeavor, and they still lurk a mile behind Word.

It is pretty obvious that Word has evolved as a writing tool; it is no longer as simple as it was when we started using it back then. Word has added a lot of features for almost all kinds of writing projects. It also has dozens of new advanced features for integrating and configuring images and graphics, as well as a wide range of text formats, mailing capabilities, among several other practical formatting resources.

MS Word’s UI is clean and easy to use, the tool is Flexible, has great tools for collaborating, and has excellent formatting features that ensure that your document comes out on paper exactly how you designed your word on your screen.

Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS.

Pricing : If you buy Word as a separate Microsoft Office package, it’ll cost you $139.99.

But it’s also available in Microsoft 365 packages.

5. Focus Writer

Attribute: Excellent Free MS Word Alternative.

I love MS Word; It’s my first love, and I’m not the only one in love with this software.

But we know that there are apps that are trying to steal our heart, trying to end romantic attachment to Word. Out of the many free MS Word alternatives, I’d say that Focus Writer is leading the pack.

As a matter of fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s a paid tool. Just imagine, it’s available on Windows, Mac, and Android.

One of the tool’s goals is to provide distraction-free writing, so unlike MS Word, it doesn’t have an interface stuffed with all sorts of features. It has a minimalistic and clean interface that is geared towards eliminating the clutter that terrorizes writers who use word processors with rich formatting features.

But that distraction-free writing comes at a cost—the app is starved of essential editing features, and that makes a bad candidate for writing a second draft or any draft of long-form writing. I’d recommend using it only when writing the very first draft.

Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, and Linux

Pricing: Free

6. LivingWriter

Attribute: Fast Developing Tool

LivingWriter is a writing tool that’s constantly being improved. If it were an animal, I’d say that it is mutating to adapt.

On the current writing software terrain, it’s not a tool that should be “slept on.” It comes with features that are perfect for multiple genres. It can be used for both fiction and nonfiction writing projects and has features that cover story elements, general notes, goals and targets, document sharing, and stats.

Just like its competitors, LivingWriter has options for switching between light and Dark Mode. Plus, it also helps you write distraction-free by switching to the focus mode.

As I said, LivingWriter is constantly being improved by the developers, and it has moved from being only a web-based app to having iOS and Android applications. It also boasts full integration with Grammarly and Canva integration, and it’s claimed (by the Living Writer Roadmap ) that its desktop apps are about 90% complete (If you’re reading this article some months later after the publishing date, then they’re already out).

Supported Systems : Web, iOS, and Android.

Pricing :  Living Writer has a yearly plan that costs $96 (billed once a year) and a monthly plan at $9.99 per month.

7. Hemingway Editor

Attribute: Best App for Impactful Writing

The Hemingway Editor—which is also called Hemingway App—is a minimalistic software that helps writers put out content that is both readable and impactful.

The Hemingway app analyzes your writing and provides reports on things like adverbs, passive voice, phrases and words with simpler alternatives, hard-to-read sentences, very-hard-to-read sentences, and other “lexical atrocities.”

For me, there hasn’t been a single check that left no flags, mainly because of adverbs. Stephen King once said that “I believe the road to hell is paved with adverbs, and I will shout it from the rooftops.”

The Hemingway app seems to have taken this to heart.

Supported Systems : macOS and Windows

Pricing: The web-based version is available for free, but the desktop apps (for Mac and Windows) cost $19.99.

Attribute: Best App for Multi-Lingual Essays

This is another excellent alternative to Grammarly.

“Sire, we have found you another worthy adversary!”

Not only is this app good for proofreading English texts, but it also excels at translating texts in Spanish, French, German, and many other supported languages.

As a grammar checker, the tool focuses on things like verbs, adverbs, confused phrases, frequently misspelled words, and so on. It also has a customizable dictionary, a text-speech feature, and a personal trainer.

Whether you’re a freelancer, a small company, an organization, or an educational institution, there’s a Ginger package for you. Ginger also offers a free plan that is pretty decent.

Ginger is available as a plugin for MS Word, MS Outlook, and Google Chrome.

Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android.

Pricing : Ginger has both free and premium plans. Its monthly plan is $9.99, while the yearly and two-year plans are $74.88 and $119.76, respectively.

Attribute: Best Book Formatting Software.

As far as book formatting goes, Vellum is king. This is the go-to app for book formatting, especially for Mac users.

Vellum’s motto is “create beautiful books.”

Yep! That’s what Vellum really does; it creates beautiful eBooks and manuscripts ready for printing.

Vellum helps you turn a simple Word document into a professionally formatted eBook or book material ready for paperback or hardcover printing.

For eBooks, Vellum lets you add an already-made book cover directly to your eBook.

But it is a bit different when creating book files for printing. If you are creating a book for printing, you have to design the cover separately and add it using another tool because Vellum can only be used to create your book’s interior file, not the book cover.

Supported Systems : macOS

Pricing : Vellum offers a free plan (which doesn’t allow formatting) and two paid plans. Vellum eBooks, which is the unlimited package for creating eBooks only, costs $199.99.   Vellum Press. Vellum’s package for creating both books for printing and eBooks is at $249.99.

10. Google Docs

Attribute: Top-notch Word Processor.

For basic word processors, the battle for the throne is usually between MS Word and Google Docs.

When I discovered Google Docs, I was like, “thank God I don’t have to worry about losing my unsaved work!”

The instant saving feature was and still is a huge plus for most people because accidents happen, and in a split second, you can lose work because you forgot to save.

Plus, Google Docs is an incredible collaborative tool. If you work with teams, then you can have all your work shared using Google drive and work in the same place, at the same time, even though you live in two different worlds.

And that’s not all! It’s a free tool; imagine the sugariness of that fact.

Google Docs comes with features for tracking changes and progress, commenting for revision and group working purposes, styles templates, and other word processing features.

Supported Systems : Android, iOS, macOS, Windows.

Pricing : Free

11. Final Draft

Attribute: Best app for screenwriters

If I were a screenwriter, Final Draft would be my favorite app.

The Final draft guys even go as far as claiming their app is the app of choice for big companies like BBC, Netflix, Walt Disney, SONY, ABC, and many others.

I would be lying if I said anything other than that for Final Draft, a powerful screenwriting tool.

Final Draft comes with over 100 templates for TV, film, and playwriting, which are very useful when you want to format your script in line with industry standards.

Expectedly, Final Draft comes with index cards. It also has character features and stats for tracking your progress.

Pricing : Final Draft offers a handsome 60-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. For existing subscribers who have older versions than Final Draft 11, upgrading costs only $79.99, and for new customers, the app costs $249.99 (currently at $199.99 due to a massive discount).

12. Ulysses

Attribute: Best Writing Software for Apple Products

Ulysses is a path-breaking tool for writing apps. In fact, Scrivener was modeled after Ulysses when it was developed back then.

It has sufficient features for word processing that can help write incredible essays and large academic assignments. It comes with a Markup-Based Text Editor, a library for organizing notes and documents, features for setting writing goals, publishing capabilities, and many others.

Ulysses is a good word processing app, but to be honest, I’m not a huge fan. Not because of its features and lack thereof, but because it’s just available on macOS.

Supported Systems :  macOS, iPadOS, and iOS.

Pricing : Ulysses offers a variety of pricing options for different regions of the world. The US plan costs $5.99 per month and $49.99 per year. Then there are plans for other regions (Europe, China, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia), which are priced using the local currencies’ USD equivalent of the US plan.

13. The Novel Factory

Attribute: Excellent App for Novelists

There’s no shortcut to writing a good novel. Novel writing software is designed to help you write faster and tidier, but it does take you through all the necessary stages.

This is a fabulous app with a lot of practical features for almost every step in your novel building process.

The Novel Factory takes your novel from the creation of a premise, plotting, creating characters, up to the last word in the story plot’s resolution.

With the Novel Factory, you can create the synopsis, create scenes that fulfill the intended narrative, sketch your characters, create the story’s settings, plot your story, et cetera.

You can write anywhere; using the web version of The Novel Factory, you can write on any internet-enabled device, from anywhere, whether it’s your favorite café, the train station, in your van, park, etc.

Supported Systems : Windows

Pricing : The Novel Factory is a paid tool but it offers a 30-day free trial. Its basic plan costs $7.50/month and is billed $75 annually. The standard package is at $20/month and is billed $198 annually.

14. Write Or Die

Attribute: Best for Productivity Purposes.

I always say that, for me, the name of this app encapsulates my life.

It’s either I write or die!

When you set goals in Write Or Die, you receive incentives, stimuli, or penalties depending on your performance. If you’re a sloth like me, you really need this.

It gives you the extra push since the penalties—which include erasing current texts—are designed to help you pick up speed and increase productivity. At times, those punishments can trigger the Usain Bolt in your fingers and make you go into overdrive.

Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Pricing : Write or Die has free and paid plans. It costs $10 for macOS and Windows and $1 for iOS.

15. IA Writer

Attribute: Simplest Writing App

IA Writer is a distraction-free writing tool that’s ideal for short essays.

It has a very simple user interface that only uses plain text. To help you eliminate distractions, IA writer has a full-screen mode that fades out everything but the line you are typing.

Supported Systems : This IA Writer app is available on Windows, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Pricing : IA Writer is a Paid tool (apps for each supported system are purchased separately.), and there are free trials for some plans.

The desktop app for macOS costs $29.99 (has a 14-day trial), apps for iOS & iPadOS are at $29.99 (there is no free trial offered), the Android app costs $4.99 /year or $29.99 one-time payment with a 30-day trial, and the Windows desktop app is at $29.99 & comes with a 14-day trial.

16. Write! App

Attribute: Distraction-Free Word Processor

Write! App is another minimalistic word processing app that is sleek and practical at the same time.

It’s an app tailor-made for distraction-free writing.

There’s no denying that Write! has a good-looking UI and works well, but it’s the distraction-free writing features that convinced me to add it to this list.

And it comes with other features that help in formatting your document, spell checking, Autocomplete, publishing, syncing, and other important tasks.

Plus, it won’t cost you an arm.

Pricing : Write! has simple pricing plans. Apart from the cloud access fee, there’s just one plan. Write! App only offers a lifetime plan which involves a one-time payment of $24.95.  For students, Write! offers a discounted price of $9.95 for students. Then there’s that optional fee for cloud access which is $4.95/year after the first year of purchase.

17. Freedom

Attribute: An Incredible Tool for Focused Writing

Freedom wants the best for you as a writer. So Freedom, on your behalf, blocks distracting sites and applications to let you focus on the most important thing—writing.

This means that you’re done—temporarily—with detours from apps, websites, and social media.

If you’re like me, you really need this app. Don’t you hate it when a 2-minute scroll on Twitter turns into 2 hours of surfing the internet?

If you’re worried about how such distractions affect your focus and productivity, then you have to start using Freedom.

It’s not an expensive tool; in fact, the “cost of freedom” has never been lower, literally.

Supported Systems :  Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, ChromeOS.

Pricing : Freedom costs $6.99 per month, $29 per year, and also offers a $129-lifetime plan which can get as low as $64.50 when discounts are offered.

18. Manuscripts

Best App for Academic Assignments

Manuscript is a tool that is perfect for students and academics.

And the good thing is that it works with popular word processing apps, including Microsoft Word.

Whether it’s an essay, lab report, dissertation, or a literature review, Manuscript will take you from the planning stage to the last page.

One of the reasons why Manuscript is an excellent tool for academic writing is its citation features. The tool allows you to import your reference library from reference management software such as Zotero and Mendeley. You can also cite directly with popular reference management systems, including Bookends and F1000Workspace.

It also has essential writing features like the outliner, the inspectors, focus mode, and you also have an option of switching to a full-screen mode.

Even with all these capabilities, Manuscript has a simple UI and is very easy to use.

19. Storyist

Attribute Affordable screenwriting software for macOS.

Writing is a vast theater. We have novelists, academic writers, journos, bloggers, and many other kinds.

As the name suggests, storyist is an app tailor-made for storytellers; it has features for creating, organizing, and tracking your plot, characters, and settings.

Storyist allows you to set comments, insert images, create headers and footers, and style sheets. If you’re not really good at formatting manuscripts and screenplays, Storyist comes with manuscript and screenplay templates to help you write using a proper format.

Your story can be sketched using index cards that are attached to your manuscript and can be displayed as you write. Storyist recognize that story writing is a flexible process, so it lets you customize and refine your story’s plot, character, and setting sheets.

Storyist is pretty basic and affordable, so it’s a perfect tool for newbie screenwriters.

Supported Systems: macOS and iOS.

Price: Storyist is a paid tool but offers a 15-day free trial. Its license costs $59.99.

20. Day One

Attribute: Excellent Journaling Software

Journaling is an important element of a writer’s life. Writing down random ideas is a proven way of increasing creativity and beating writer’s block .

With the Day One writing app, you write short story ideas, blog post titles, or record your day-to-day writing activities.

You can add photos, audio clips, drawings, or videos to your journal to capture memories and make your journal beautiful.

The tool also lets you sync your journal entries so that you can easily access them across all of your devices.

If you’re not sold on journaling because notebook journals aren’t your cup of tea, this app will change your perception.

Supported Systems : macOS and iOS.

Pricing : Day one offers a free plan and a paid plan that costs $2.92 per month.

21. yWriter

Attribute: For Authors Who Like Crafting their Novel Scene by Scene

yWriter used to be an exclusive Windows book writing app, but they have made it available on almost all the major platforms—Windows, Android, iOS, and macOS (which is still a beta version).

yWriter is similar to Scrivener and I remember back then, some people said it was “a Scrivener for Windows.” But unlike Scrivener, yWriter focuses on chapters and separates them as if they were different books.

In those chapters, you can then set up scenes. So, each chapter is treated as an independent section, and the scenes can be sorted separately in different windows.

Once you hit a dead end, you can mark the scene as unused and it won’t be included in the final word count.

yWriter has features for adding scenes, characters, locations, etc.

The app also helps you track your progress by displaying word counts (per file and the total) and keeping everyday log files.

Supported Systems : Windows, Android, iOS, & macOS.

Price: Free

22. Bibisco

Attribute: Excellent Tool for Planning a Novel.

I think of a novelist as an architect who also has to handle everything else after designing his building.

They have to design and build the whole novel—create a novel structure, come up with and explain the premise, create and define the and settings, set up the narrative, design characters, determine and add images & objects essential for the story, write & organize chapters and scenes, et cetera.

Bibisco handles all these tasks.

Bibisco lets you export your word using pdf, Docx, epub file type. Plus, Bibisco is a multilingual app; it supports a lot of languages including Czech, French, German, English, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish.

Supported Systems : Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Pricing : Bibisco is an open-source software program. You pay what you think is the right price.

Deciding on a Writing Software

Free writing software vs paid software.

It is wrong to generalize that all paid writing software tools are better than their free counterparts.

In some cases, though, that assertion does hold. Some tools are paid software for good reason—they come with incredible features and offer great customer service.

And… Some free services come with ads (which can be a source of annoyance and distractions) that are a source of revenue for the developers.

All in all, it’s good to give a writing app a try before making any decision. The price tag alone isn’t sufficient for determining good writing software.

Things to Consider When Choosing Writing Software

1. supported systems.

I find it unnecessary for apps to restrict themselves to a single OS. Unless you tell me that Apple or Microsoft are paying you, it doesn’t make sense to me.

In fact, it feels like some childish ego.

A good writing tool needs to support major operating systems, at least both macOS and Windows. Having desktop apps for these systems is a convenience on its own. But the tool can also have apps for mobile systems (Android, iPadOS & iOS).

2. Usefulness and Ease of Use

Nobody purchases writing software to make their lives harder. NO!

A tool with lots of features does make writing a bit easier. But if those features are more intricate than what they’re supposed to be, then you’re better off without that writing app.

Good writing software is tailor-made for writers and, preferably, made by or with the help of writers. Such software has little to no whistles and bells and is very intuitive.

3. Distraction-Free Writing

When a writer gets their act together and starts writing, there must be no distractions.

Detours that arise from other apps and activities are bad enough, nobody needs more distractions from a writing app. In this regard, a writing tool needs to be tidy and free of unnecessary widgets that can only delay the writing process.

Besides that, good writing software programs also come with focus modes and full-screen writing which help get rid of additional widgets and inessential features.

4. Specificity

Diversity and versatility is a good thing for a writing tool to have. A writing app with so many capabilities makes it easier and cheaper for a writer to handle different projects.

However, good software needs to have some particularity. It needs to be a perfect tool for a specific project or type of writing.

For example, scrivener doesn’t strive to be the jack of all trades. Instead, it tried and has successfully become the best book writing software. This means that authors know that they won’t get any grammar checks, but it will efficiently handle the creative and organizing elements of their book writing process.

5. Cost of Software

Sometimes, fussing over the price tag isn’t necessary. If the tool can give value for money, then you just have to close your eyes and authorize that payment.

But in some rare instances, high cost doesn’t always reflect the quality of the writing software. Take Google Docs for example, it’s free but better than a couple of paid tools.

If there’s a paid tool that someone recommended to you or you find on your own, always look for trial periods and free versions. Use them to test the tool and if you’re convinced that the price tag doesn’t match the quality, DUMP IT.

What Writing App Do Professional Writers Use?

MS Word and Scrivener are the most popular apps among famous authors. Best-selling authors like J.K Rowling, Steven Kotler, and Stephen King have used or still use MS word.

Todd Henry, Jeff Goins, and Sabba Tahir have all used or still use Scrivener. Todd Henry and Sabba Tahir use Scrivener for drafting but use Word to write.

Final Draft is the most famous screenwriting software that I know. Ben Stiller, James Cameron, Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis are just a few of the many famous names in Hollywood that use Final Draft to write scripts.

What Is the Best Writing App for Longer-Form Works?

Scrivener, without a doubt. Scrivener is perfect for long-form works. It helps you put all your researched content, references, notes, and your unique content in one place.

For Novelists, plotting, adding notes, creating characters, fleshing the story, and revisions can all be done inside Scrivener.

Final Words On the Best Writing Software

As I said at the beginning of this read, you have to put effort into finding the best writing software. Don’t just listen to what other people or bloggers are saying.

The writing app has to be tailored for your needs; otherwise, you’ll end up with a white elephant.

Obviously, there are apps other than – Grammarly and Scrivener that are actually good. Go out there and find your writing app!

AI essay writing apps analyze the text and then write an essay on any chosen topic. These apps can complete several jobs, including selecting keywords for the essay, adding transition words between paragraphs, organizing information according to argumentative structure, and distinguishing between facts and opinions to avoid mistakes like spelling mistakes or incorrect tenses.

Most AI writing apps work similarly: you enter a topic, and the program provides you with a thesis statement. You then need to input the supporting points for that thesis, and the AI app will generate accurate and unique essays based on your information and you can then edit them as per your preference.

These are some of the best apps that write essays for you. However, the one that stands out is Smodin due to several reasons.

For most of human history, writing tools were pretty basic. While there were important advances in technology such as the invention of paper, the printing press, and later the typewriter, it was all just physical marks on a physical medium at the end of the day.

Word processing software was a huge leap forward, forever changing the process of drafting and archiving. The core technology of word processing has remained more or less the same even into the 21st century, but we have seen major advances in the organizational and brainstorming tools available to writers.

The result is our current landscape, in which hundreds (if not thousands) of writing apps compete for your attention, all claiming to revolutionize the way you write.

Which apps are worth your time? This article will help you decide, exploring a variety of writing apps to improve the way you brainstorm, draft, edit, and publish your work.

Whether you’re a student, knowledge worker, or professional writer, you’ll find something useful below.

Mind-mapping is a powerful tool for brainstorming writing and drawing connections between ideas. Traditionally, the technique involves drawing shapes on paper and connecting those shapes with branching lines.

These days, however, you aren’t confined to making paper mind maps. Coggle lets you create digital mind maps that are saved to the cloud and accessible across devices. And unlike on paper, you can edit and rearrange the mind maps as much as you want without worrying about running out of space.

If you’re struggling to come up with writing ideas, then Coggle could be the creative boost you need.

Price: A free version is available with up to 3 private mind maps (and unlimited public ones). The paid version starts at $5 / month and includes unlimited private mind maps, extra shapes, and additional formatting options.

Evernote app interface

Overview: A long-standing writing and note-taking tool that’s still valuable today.

Evernote was the first note-taking and personal knowledge management app I ever used. I recall how mind-blowing it was at the time to create a searchable archive of notes, articles, PDFs, and whatever else I found interesting.

Since then, Evernote has exploded in popularity. While many other apps have emerged that claim to replace or surpass it, it remains a powerful tool for writers.

You can use it to take notes, write outlines, or even produce full drafts of essays or articles. You can also use Evernote’s Web Clipper to quickly save articles and other web pages to read later or access offline.

If you’re looking to create a “digital notebook” to hold your ideas and fuel your creativity, Evernote is an excellent choice.

Price: Most features are free. Evernote Premium is $7.99 / month and includes additional features for searching, sharing, and organizing your notes. Students can get 50% off their first year of Evernote Premium .

Platforms: Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Web

Google Docs

Google Docs app interface

Overview: The original collaborative, cloud-based writing app remains an invaluable part of many writers’ workflows.

Google Docs needs no introduction. When it was released, its collaborative, real-time writing and editing features were revolutionary. Now, such features are commonplace (even expected) in most cloud-based writing and note-taking tools.

Despite this, I’ve continued to use Google Docs for all of my professional writing, and it’s still the tool I recommend for everyday writing work.

The interface is clean, it automatically saves your work to the cloud, and the backing of Google means it’s unlikely to disappear (something you can’t say about the latest and greatest writing apps).

If you want a writing tool that just works, Google Docs is the app to use.

Price: Free

Platforms: Android, iOS, Web

Cold Turkey Writer

Cold Turkey Writer app interface

Overview: If you’re procrastinating on a writing project, Cold Turkey Writer will force you to focus.

Your computer is a powerful tool for writing, but it also includes lots of potential distractions such as social media, video games, Netflix, and Wikipedia rabbit holes. Cold Turkey Writer eliminates these distractions.

When you launch the app, you tell it your writing goal. This goal can be either a number of words or an amount of time spent writing. After you’ve done that, Cold Turkey will block every app on your computer (internet included) until you’ve met your writing goal.

This might seem extreme, but that’s why it’s so effective. When you remove other options, you’ll be amazed how much writing you produce.

Note that while Cold Turkey Writer is an excellent tool for producing distraction-free drafts, it doesn’t include many formatting options. So you’ll need to use it in conjunction with an app like Google Docs or Microsoft Word if you plan to print or publish your writing.

Price: Most features are free. A one-time payment of $9 (CAD) will get you additional formatting and theming features.

Platforms: Mac, Windows

Scrivener app sales page screenshot

Overview: A popular tool for long-form writing projects such as novels, screenplays, and dissertations.

Long-form writing presents unique challenges compared to writing essays, blog posts, or other short pieces. One of the main challenges is organization. How do you keep track of what you’ve written? And how do you arrange your writing into a cohesive whole?

Scrivener aims to solve these problems. It includes all the standard word processing features you’d find in an app like Word or Docs, but it also includes features for organizing, navigating, and editing your writing projects.

You can quickly see all your project’s chapters, sections, or scenes at a glance. And you can quickly rearrange these items to help you put together your final manuscript.

Other handy features include:

  • A virtual “corkboard” to help you plan your writing structure
  • The ability to split documents into smaller chapters or sections
  • Tools for displaying reference material such as images, PDFs, or web pages (without having to leave the Scrivener app).
  • Options for exporting your work as a PDF, Word Doc, or even a Kindle ebook.

Price: One-time purchase of $49 for a single desktop license (Mac or Windows). Students and academics can receive a discounted license for $41.65. The iOS app requires a separate purchase of $19.99. A 30-day free trial is also available.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS

Novlr app interface

Overview: Aimed at novel writers, Novlr includes extensive tools to organize and track your long-form writing projects.

At first glance, Novlr seems similar to Scrivener. And while the two apps do share a lot of features in common, Novlr is different enough that it’s also worth considering.

To start, there’s the Novlr interface. Compared to Scrivener, it’s much more minimalist. However, don’t mistake this minimalism for a lack of features and power.

Novlr lets you see an overview of your writing sections and chapters as you work, and it constantly saves your writing (much like Google Docs). There’s also a “Focus Mode” that hides the interface so you can concentrate on the current chapter or section.

Most of the above features are available in Scrivener. Where Novlr really stands out is in its style and grammar checking features.

As you write, Novlr will show you suggestions for fixing grammar, spelling, and even making your writing more concise. And unlike a lot of writing apps that only mark errors or suggest corrections, Novlr includes explanations for each of its suggestions. This way, you can learn to be a better writer as you use the app.

Overall, I think Novlr is a better tool if you’re focused on novel or fiction writing, while Scrivener is better if you plan to write nonfiction. Scrivener’s tools for organization and research material are superior to Novlr’s, while Novlr is hyper-focused on being the best tool for novelists (and no one else).

Ultimately, both apps have free trials, so I encourage you to test out each and see which is better for your long-form writing needs.

Price: $100 per year or $10 month-to-month. A 2-week free trial is also available.

Platforms: Web (also works offline and on mobile devices)

Byword app interface

Overview: A simple Markdown writing app.

Byword is a Markdown text editor that aims to help you write faster. If you’re not familiar with Markdown, here’s a good explanation . Basically, it’s a way to write plain text that you can then quickly convert into HTML (saving you the hassle of manually writing HTML).

If that last paragraph made your eyes glaze over, don’t worry; there are plenty of other apps in this article for your needs. But if you regularly write for the web, learning Markdown (and using a Markdown editor such as Byword) can save you a lot of time.

Byword lets you write documents in Markdown and then export them as HTML, Rich Text, or a PDF. You can also export your writing directly to a publishing platform such as WordPress, Medium, Blogger, or Tumblr. If you already use Markdown (or want to learn it), then Byword is a tool you should look into.

Price: One-time purchase of $10.99 (Mac app) or $5.99 (iPhone and iPad app)

Platforms: Mac, iOS

Written? Kitten!

Written? Kitten! app interface

Overview: Get some extra writing motivation with pictures of kittens, puppies, or bunnies.

Writing the first draft is always the hardest part. If you need some motivation to get those words onto the page, then check out Written? Kitten!

This web app shows you a picture of a cute animal of your choice (kitten, puppy, or bunny) every time you write a certain number of words.

It’s a great tool if you need to write an essay of a certain length or if you have a goal to write a set number of words each day.

750 Words app showing writing statistics

Overview: A private, online journal that helps you build a daily writing habit.

“Write every day” is a common New Year’s Resolution, but it can be tricky to stick to. If you’re looking for an app to help motivate you, check out 750 Words .

As the name implies, 750 Words is an app that helps you build a habit of writing at least 750 words (about 3 pages) per day. When you log in to the app, you’ll see nothing but a place to write. As you type, the app keeps track of your progress and lets you know when you’ve passed 750 words. The app also saves your work so you can review it later, and everything is completely private.

In addition to the writing features, 750 Words shows you insights about your writing such as how many days in a row you’ve written, your average words per minute, and the mood you were in (based on the words you use).

Whether you’re looking to write as a creative exercise, to learn more about yourself, or because some stranger on the internet like me told you to, 750 Words is a great way to get your thoughts onto the page.

Price: Free for 30 days, then $5 / month.

Daily Page app sales page

Overview: Daily Page sends you a new writing prompt each day and gives you a distraction-free space to write.

Don’t know what to write about? Daily Page provides a solution.

Each day, the app emails you a different creative writing prompt. Just click the link in the email, sign in to the app, and write your entry. If you prefer free writing, the app gives you the option to do that as well.

In addition to the writing prompts and motivation, a subscription to Daily Page also gives you access to several writing courses on topics such as screenwriting, blogging, and storytelling. While I can’t vouch for the quality of the courses, it’s an interesting feature that you don’t see in a lot of other writing apps.

Price: $4.99 month-to-month or $47.88 / year.

Grammarly app interface

Overview: An app that checks (and automatically corrects) your grammar, spelling, and more.

The school system generally does a terrible job of teaching grammar. Combine that with the fact that English spelling is an illogical disaster, and it’s no wonder that we all struggle with writing “mechanics” to one degree or another.

The grammar and spell check tools in your word processor can help, but they still miss a lot of mistakes. This is where Grammarly comes in.

Grammarly checks your writing for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and usage. When it finds a mistake, it will highlight it and explain what’s wrong. You can then choose to accept the correction or ignore it.

To get the most out of Grammarly, I recommend installing the browser extension . With this, Grammarly will automatically check your writing everywhere from your email to Google Docs to online forms. Prefer to write offline? Grammarly also has standalone apps that you can paste your writing into, as well as extensions for Microsoft Word.

Even as a professional writer and editor with a degree in English, I use Grammarly every day. It speeds up the editing process and finds mistakes that spell check tends to miss. While its suggestions aren’t correct 100% of the time, it’s still a valuable tool for any kind of writing (except maybe poetry).

Price: All the features I described above are free. You can upgrade to Premium for $29.95 / month to get additional features such as vocabulary suggestions, plagiarism checks, and readability suggestions.

Platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web. Browser extensions are available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. A Microsoft Word extension is also available.

Hemingway interface

Overview: An app that helps you make your writing easier to read.

When you’re writing a draft, the thoughts often come out of your head in a jumble. During the editing process, it’s your job to make this jumble understandable. To help you out, I recommend the Hemingway app .

Hemingway’s goal is to remove anything unnecessary from your writing. This could be complex sentences, passive voice, adverbs, or big words. While none of these are “wrong” to use, removing them often makes your writing easier to read.

Whenever Hemingway encounters something it thinks you should remove, it will highlight it. Next to each highlight, you’ll see a suggestion for improvement. This could be anything from using a simpler word to shortening a lengthy sentence.

In addition to stylistic suggestions, Hemingway also displays some useful statistics about your writing, including readability, word count, and estimated reading time.

If you purchase the desktop version of Hemingway, you’ll get additional features such as the ability to publish directly to WordPress or Medium and the option to export your writing as HTML, Markdown, Word Doc, or PDF.

For maximum editing power, combine Hemingway with Grammarly.

Price: Web version is free. Desktop versions (Mac and Windows) are each $19.99.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, Web

Blurt interface

Overview: Blurt helps you build a daily writing habit while removing distractions and teaching you to be a better writer.

Do you love the writing experience of Medium, but are looking for some additional tools to help you focus? Then Blurt could be the app you’re looking for.

To start, Blurt asks you to define the project you’re working on. Options include a journal, blog post, book, newsletter, or essays. After you’ve defined your project, Blurt prompts you to set a daily writing goal for it. You can even specify the time of day you want to write, and Blurt will send you an email reminder to do it.

Once you’ve set your goals, it’s time to write. The Blurt editor is very minimal, with most formatting options hidden by default. As you write, Blurt offers spelling and readability suggestions. The readability suggestions are similar to those in Hemingway, including adverbs, difficult to read sentences, and even cliches.

If you find yourself getting distracted while writing, Blurt lets you launch a “Writing Session.” This session will challenge you to write for a set amount of time or to write a certain number of words. And if you struggle with self-editing, Blurt can blur your words as you type. This helps keep drafting and editing separate.

Finally, Blurt gives you the option to export your work to Medium, Twitter, Facebook, or Markdown (and it also supports Markdown syntax while writing).

Price: 15-day free trial, then $14.99 / month.

Quetext app interface

Overview:  A free, web-based plagiarism checker.

Plagiarism is a serious offense both in school and the professional world. Not only is it wrong, but it could damage your grade (or even get you expelled or fired in extreme cases).

Luckily, plagiarism is easy to avoid if you properly cite your sources and use a plagiarism checking tool like Quetext . Quetext uses advanced natural language processing to compare your writing to billions of documents across the internet. If the app detects any potential plagiarism, it will highlight it in your document.

Even if you don’t think your document contains plagiarism, it can’t hurt to check (particularly when there’s an app to make it so easy).

Price:  The Free plan includes 5 plagiarism checks per month (enough for most students). For unlimited plagiarism checks, citation suggestions, and priority support, you can upgrade to the Pro plan for $9.99 / month.

Platforms:  Web

Coffitivity

Coffitivity app interface

Overview: Recreate the sounds of a coffee shop in the comfort of your home.

If you enjoy writing in coffee shops, then you should give Coffitivity a look. The app recreates the sounds of a coffee shop within your web browser. This allows you to feel like you’re in a coffee shop (and potentially focus better) without leaving your house.

In a time when many coffee shops are closed to the public, this is an especially valuable service. I like to mix the app’s sounds with instrumental music to create a more immersive experience, but that’s up to you.

And, of course, you’ll need to provide your own coffee.

Price: Free. For $9 / year you can get access to additional coffee shop sounds.

Brain.fm app interface

Overview: An app that uses specially-designed music to help you focus.

Listening to music is a common way to focus on all kinds of projects, writing and otherwise. However, listening to music while writing can be distracting, particularly if the music contains lyrics or interesting melodies.

Brain.fm solves this problem. The app uses a variety of compositional and sound design techniques ( backed by science ) to create music specifically for focusing.

When you sign in to the app, you tell it what your goal is: focus, relax, or sleep. Once you select your goal (which would typically be “Focus” for writing), you tell the app how long you want to focus. Brain.fm will then start playing music designed to help your brain enter a flow state .

I find Brain.fm to be especially helpful if I’m procrastinating or struggling to finish a difficult project. I recommend combining it with the Pomodoro technique for the ultimate focused writing experience.

Price: $6.99 / month or $49.99 / year. A free, 3-day trial is also available.

For more music to help you focus, listen to our study playlist .

Zotero app interface

Overview: A free tool for organizing academic sources and generating citations.

When you’re writing a thesis, dissertation, or research paper , it can be tricky to keep track of your sources. You could keep a list of them in a text document, but that relies on you remembering to update it. And when it’s time to cite your sources, it could take hours to assemble that list into a properly formatted bibliography.

To make it easier to manage your research, use Zotero . Zotero is an open-source app for collecting, organizing, and citing sources of all kinds.

Once you’ve installed the Zotero browser extension , you can quickly pull citation information from library pages, JSTOR, online journals, and just about any other digital source you can think of. The result is a database of sources that you can quickly search and reference.

And when it’s time to submit your final draft, Zotero can generate a bibliography or references section in the citation format of your choice (APA, Chicago, MLA, and thousands more ). The app also includes tools for collaborating on papers with other researchers, and you have the option to store all your Zotero data in the cloud.

Platforms: Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Safari

Honorable Mentions

Below, you’ll find a few other apps that I use regularly in my writing work. I didn’t give these their own sections because they’re either too specific to my work or have a waitlist. But I still think they’re super useful and worth a look:

  • Capitalize My Title – A web app that converts your titles to the proper “title case.” I use it to check the title and subheadings of my articles, but you can also use it to properly capitalize the titles of essays or research papers.
  • Roam Research – The app I use to take notes, journal, and record article ideas. While extremely powerful, I didn’t give Roam its own section because there’s currently a waiting list to access the app. You can learn more about Roam in our full review .
  • Docs to Markdown – This Google Docs add-on lets you export your work as HTML or Markdown. I use it when I’m transferring an article from Google Docs to WordPress. But it could also be a useful tool for copywriters or web designers.

Your Brain Is the Ultimate Writing App

I hope this article has helped you find an app to make your writing process more efficient, pleasant, or focused.

Ultimately, writing apps are just there to enable you as a writer. To get better at writing, you need to practice it, get feedback, learn, and repeat.

US Surgeon General calls for warning labels on social media amid mental health 'emergency'

best essay help apps

The U.S. Surgeon General called for social media companies to be required to use safety warning labels in a New York Times opinion essay published Monday.

Citing research that shows social media could be negatively impacting youth mental health , Dr. Vivek H. Murthy said a surgeon general's warning on social media platforms, similar to those on tobacco and alcohol products, could raise awareness for parents about the potential harm of the platforms.

"One of the worst things for a parent is to know your children are in danger yet be unable to do anything about it," Murthy wrote. "That is how parents tell me they feel when it comes to social media — helpless and alone in the face of toxic content and hidden harms."

NetChoice , a trade organization representing some social media companies, said in a statement shared with USA TODAY that the responsibility should be on the parents to protect their children's mental health, not the government or tech companies.

Research shows social media could come with benefit and harm

Murthy said social media is a major factor in the mental health crisis among young people, which he called "an emergency."

Social media has become nearly ubiquitous among youth. The  2023 U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on Social Media and Youth Mental Health  found that nearly  95% of youth aged 13 to 17 use a social media platform , with more than a third saying they use it "almost constantly."

The advisory concluded that more research is needed to fully understand the impacts of social media. But it showed there are some benefits and "ample indicators that social media can also have a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children and adolescents."

Potential benefits identified in the advisory were community, connection and self expression. It also stated that social media can support mental health of LGBTQ youth to help develop their identities. Additionally, seven out of 10 girls of color reported encountering identity-affirming content related to race on social media, the advisory stated.

Potential harms of using social media included greater risk of suffering from depression and anxiety. Some studies also showed greater risk of negative health outcomes for adolescents girls including disordered eating and poor sleep.

Murthy praises dairy recall, Boeing response as examples of swift action

In the NYT letter, Murthy pointed to the F.A.A.'s swift grounding of Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes after a door plug came off mid-flight earlier this year and widespread recalls of cheese products due to risk of listeria contamination .

"Why is it that we have failed to respond to the harms of social media when they are no less urgent or widespread than those posed by unsafe cars, planes or food?," Murthy wrote. "These harms are not a failure of willpower and parenting; they are the consequence of unleashing powerful technology without adequate safety measures, transparency or accountability."

Several state bills seeking to limit youth access to social media have been passed by legislatures but blocked in court. Those lawsuits were often brought by NetChoice.

NetChoice vice president and general counsel Carl Szabo said in a statement that the onus is on parents to protect their children from harm online.

"A warning label oversimplifies this issue, and it is a simplistic way to approach this that assumes that every child is the exact same. In reality, every child is different and struggles with their own challenges," Szabo said. "Parents and guardians are the most appropriately situated to handle these unique needs of their children—not the government or tech companies."
