Nstp Reflection Paper

Fhritzie Lee: There are a lot of good things that I can learn and do with my life; I know that from the moment that I was born, I am destined for a purpose. Living on purpose is the only way to really live, everything else just exists. Once I know what God wants me to do, the blessing comes in actually doing it. It defines success for me. It will show me that what I truly believe is what is important, not what the world says. As a girl with dreams of having my own charity foundation, I wanted to have a concrete and can’t-be-ruined faith & confidence.

Every day I have the opportunity to learn and experience something new. I should seize that opportunity, learn from it and use it to change the world even in little things that I do. NSTP had served as a stepping stone for me to see new things outside my boundary. I learned that I don’t have to get higher grades nor solve and analyze Accounting problems to help . . . for all I needed is a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love. It seems like another school break is nearing its end. At first, it seems just like any other school break.

But looking back, it did have its ups and downs. One part of it is my NSTP class. NSTP was a one big rollercoaster ride. It was fine with me going to our designated area although it was costly because of the fare we have to pay, but I realized that I did actually had fun in one way or another. Despite my initial bitterness against having to wake up early on Saturday for NSTP class since I’ve been usually tired from Monday to Friday, still I found a sense of fulfillment as I enjoyed every lessons and activities we had. Those times I had with our NSTP class belongs now to my memories.

I strongly believe that those memories help me in my effort to learn from it and succeed in the future. The very essence of those things is the effects it had on me and what it was like to help and go out of my boundaries. It was actually the idea of helping which is weighing on my mind and heart right now. I promised to take it upon myself the lessons, friendship and teamwork that I had learned and experienced to build my dream charity foundation in the future. I may not have that one magical effect to the society, but with the things I plan to do, society can slowly and surely change.

In the activities we had, I had commit and share the life lessons and godly passions God has given for me to share with. The activities had shaped me to know the combination of spiritual gifts, heart, ability, personality, talents and experiences that God had offered and given to me. I also learned that I should not get discouraged and give up easily every time I stumble. It has been a bridge for my spiritual, emotional and personality development. It had shown to me that whatever our aspects in life – rich or poor, powerful or not – we were all equal and the same, for we are all people of God.

The experiences I had served as an eye-opener for me, to be aware of the current situation not just in the community we have visited, but for the whole country. It was a process of influencing and directing activities towards goal accomplishment. By visiting the area, I realized that I had a purpose to do and it inspires me to be more confident about myself. I am now more aware of what is going around and how to make a difference in it. It had greater impact on the leadership and teamwork skills I’d learn, both of which are vital in the world of work.

It has really been a great way for me to step outside my comfort zone and reach out others. All through my experience, there are various occasions when I had to make decisions. A number of them present in difficult forms and at crucial points, most of it eventually figure and describe the track of my life; but I refer to them as lessons and experiences which I will forever remember. I also learned that in some instance there will always be a time where I will be forced to pay a price to achieve something. This only implies that in life, I have to trade for the outcome I am seeking.

Aside from the activities we had, the film showings that we watched perked up my consciousness as to what is really happening around. I learned a lot of things about the church and the life of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. before he died. I knew how hard his life was, still he show much love and care for our country. But as of now, my NSTP days are soon finally over. No more morning alarms on Saturdays. I was looking forward for this day so I can have a rest since I’ve been sick lately, but I never imagined that seeing it slightly ending is heartbreaking and a little painful.

I’m looking forward for the next upcoming NSTP class in the second term of the school year; I know it will be a beginning of a new chapter in the book of my life. New events and experiences will happen, but I am ready and open for that. Most of all, I know NSTP will be my stepping stone to build my future charity foundation. Through this, I am beginning to know my real purpose and I know that one of my purposes in life is to help and serve the people of God; NSTP as my starting point.

Teenage pregnancy rates across the Asia Pacific Region has declined over the past two decades, except in the Philippines. The alarming situation continues despite the effort of the Philippine government to pass laws and implement programs related to reproductive health. Teen motherhood is a growing phenomenon in the Philippines. Among Filipino women ages 15-19, one in 10 is already a mother or pregnant with her first child (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2014). Using participatory action research and photovoice, this study aimed to give voice to teen mothers so that stories of their past and present struggles, and their hopes for the future for themselves and for their child or children could be heard. Through the nominations of the rural health unit officer of selected barangays of one town in North Philippines, the research team contacted possible participants. Four participants continued diligent involvement throughout the photovoice process. The themes that emerged from the data included regret and confusion, seeds of hope, sacrifice and hard work, joys of motherhood, and dreams for the future. The data revealed that teen mothers had the ability to rise above their past and present struggles and nurture their dreams for a bright future.

This study investigated the relationship between the age, occupation and length of daily walk, and the length of labor process among teenage primigravidas. Twenty (20) teenage first-time mothers on labor in Rural Health unit, Murcia, Negros Occidental, Philippines participated in the study. The study utilized a Descriptive-correlational design, and used one set of questionnaire. The questionnaire was self-constructed by the researcher, and was validated by two "validity checkers". Findings of this study revealed that fifteen (15) of the respondents (75%) were 18 years old and above, and 5 (25%) were below 18 years old. Seven (7) of the respondents (35%) were students, and 13 (65%) did house work, as their occupation. In the relationship between the daily walk and length of labor process, this study revealed an r-value of -0.701 and a p-value of 0.001, thus a significant relationship.Therefore, this study concluded that increase in the length of daily walk shall cause a decrease in the length of labor process among teenage primigravidas.

Unintended teenage pregnancy is an ever-present issue in developing countries such as the Philippines. The impact of teenage pregnancy affects the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well being of the adolescents. Teen pregnancies carry extra health risks to both the mother and the baby. Nurses play a crucial role in supporting young people as trusted practitioners in a range of settings. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of the teenage pregnant women. Six adolescent female aged 12-19 years old who were pregnant with their first child agreed to participate. A qualitative inquiry, specifically Husserlian descriptive phenomenology was employed. Semi-structured in depth face-to-face interviews were undertaken, audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using Colaizzi's method. The richness of the experiences shared by the selections provided the necessary information to understand and describe the essence of the phenomenon understudy. Cool and warm analyses captured the following emergent themes of Trends toward issues, Fortified faith, and Optimistic outlook. For the selections in this study, being pregnant at a young age did not mean that their life and future were all over. The women were optimistic about their futures. The findings of the study have vital implications in offering specific programs and services and in developing educational materials that focus on preventing teen pregnancy. While health nurse practitioners primarily provide services and education to teens and parents in various health care facilities, they also can be significant participants in prevention activities and coalitions that are based in a community. The outcomes of the study have possible contributions to the nursing practice, to policies that facilitate the promotion of the health of the teenage mothers and the prevention of teenage pregnancies, and in building future researches especially in the education of the teens about the consequences of pregnancy.

( NOTE: President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio has been very vocal about their plan to introduce the Reserve Training Corps or ROTC program as a mandatory subject for senior high school (SHS).

While the debate about the pros and cons of making ROTC a required subject for SHS students will surely drag on for the near future, the implementation of the National Training Service Program (NSTP) for college students has often been ignored.

The enactment of Repuclic Act 9163 in 2002 paved the way for the creation of the NSTP. There are three choices that college students can choose from to fulfill the NSTP program: the ROTC, the Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS), and the Literacy Training Service or LTS.

How many times have we heard of people talking about eliminating poverty when they never went out of their way to witness it first-hand? Sometimes, it pays to move out of the confines of privilege (e.g. exclusive schools, luxurious bars, or extravagant coffee shops) to meet real people. Doing a volunteer work for Gawad Kalinga (GK) provided me with this rare opportunity.

As we all know, G.K has built homes for millions of homeless individuals in hundreds of communities across the nation since its conception in 2003. In giving decent homes to the homeless, Gawad Kalinga has been able to restore dignity to millions of human lives. This endeavor has brought out the best in us Filipinos – particularly the spirit of  bayanihan.

We in the UP College of Mass Communication were tasked to do volunteer work for Gawad Kalinga for this Summer term in fulfillment of the Civic Welfare Training Service class requirement. We were sent to the GK Brookside community in Bagong Silangan, Quezon City. It was hailed as a designer’s village because it used to be a GK showcase community for others across the country to emulate.

I said “it used to be” because the once-admired village has seen steady physical deterioration over the past years. Aside from that, the community has also lost morale and the bayanihan spirit as well. As one resident put it, “ nag kanya-kanya na kasi eh. ” Aside for the task of giving the community a face lift, we also have to exert our best effort in trying to fire-up the people’s spirit again.

Before we started with the job, we have to lay the groundwork first. We toured the community and met the kapitbahayan  (the neighborhood) on the first day of the tour of duty. As we were doing house-to-house visits like a typical candidate, you can feel their initial reluctance to talk to us. Later on, one resident confided to me that there were something that bothers them from fully interacting with us – and they are those students who we commonly refer to as “konyo. ”

Anyway, there are those in our group that were very willing to talk to them, me included. It is very important for the members of the community to interact with us because they are the ones who know what their needs are. Gradually, our to-do list expanded – it now included home repainting, canal rehabilitation (if that’s the right word) and a little bit of landscaping. As we prepared for the work ahead, something unexpected happened.

In an unbelievable turn of events, some residents began sharing their life stories to some of us. Some recounted to me how they lived prior to being given a home in this GK community. There’s this isaw  vendor who recounted to me that her family were just lowly garbage scavengers in Payatas dump site and in the elite homes of New Manila, Quezon City.She frankly told me that her eldest daughter, who’s age is 16, would most likely not enter college because of her dire financial situation. These stories makes me sad because I have seen that a quality education is the key towards a bright future. Since the doors of college had been shut, can we still expect this girl to have a life away from poverty?

Meanwhile, I have also talked to other residents who have lived in other depressed communities across Quezon City like Munoz and Don Antonio in Commonwealth. They have told me how thankful they were for the home Gawad Kalinga gave them. This only goes to show that giving the poor a decent home is tantamount to giving them a new lease on life.

Aside from sharing their humble beginnings, some residents also told me about the struggle they face everyday to make both ends meet. The families living in Sta. Clara St. usually rely on a single family breadwinner – typically the father. More often than not, they work as irregular construction workers earning the minimum wage. For them, it is not only ”No work-no pay” but “No work-no pay-no dinner” as well. To compound the problem, I have interacted with mothers who still managed to have eight kids (she’s not just one!). Among the residents, there’s a story of a housewife which really inspired me – the story of Mrs. Jennifer Jerusalem.

She never got to enter college and in fact, she candidly admitted that she has no birth certificate. I became close to her because she has been assigned as the leader of the Sta. Clara St. kapitbahayan  and in that capacity, we students have to maintain regular contacts with her throughout our work. Even though she has an educational handicap, she was able to do many things that even our national leaders can’t. It is the ability to lead the residents and unite the community in order to accomplish what needs to be done.

A good example is when we in the group were already in the process of raising money to buy paints for the repainting task. To our surprise, she has already spearheaded the effort to make the Sta. Clara community involved by collecting donations of as small as Php 25.00 to augment our resources. If you think about it, Php 25.00 is no small amount for a family that earns less than Php 200.00 in a given day. In the end, she was able to gather more than Php1,000 – enough to buy three gallons of paint.

Together, everyone achieves more indeed! Whenever I see her two kids, particularly her 6 year old daughter Ronalyn, I can’t help but admire Mrs. Jerusalem for being able to raise such a young achiever! At a young age, you can see the child’s potential to finally help her family break away from the chains of poverty. You can see that with proper education, Ronalyn has a bright future ahead.

May 12, 2008 – this was our last day in the community! We have repainted almost all the houses around and on this day, we had a farewell party involving the community which we have learned to love over the past few weeks. The residents there can’t thank us UP students enough for what we have done for them.

The Farewell Party came to an abrupt end at around 2:30 that afternoon as the strong rain began to pour. The rain quickly became stronger over the next few minutes and for me at that time, the only logical thing to do was to let the rain stop. However, Mrs. Marife Flores, a resident of Sta. Clara who I will always remember for giving me free lunch said to me:

“’Wag sasama ang loob mo sa akin ah, pero kung ako sa ‘yo aalis na ako dito dahil baka magkabaha at hindi ka pa makauwi. ” I heeded her advice reluctantly and about ten minutes after I left the place, a flash flood ravaged the GK Brookside  Community – particularly Sta. Clara since it is unfortunately located besides the creek that caused all the havoc.
