Building Peace: Post-Conflict Peacebuilding Through Community Development Projects

In the midst of conflict-ridden situations worldwide, development projects have the potential to promote reconciliation and build peace. Participatory development projects that involve the input and governance from and implementation by the community maximize that potential. Although there has been a good amount of literature on the subject of development and peacebuilding, the case for community development strategies has to be mainstreamed. This paper demonstrates that community development is essential to the success of peacebuilding through development projects as it captures the necessary aspect of a participatory, community-centered strategy. The conclusion of this study implies that development workers and those in the field of peacebuilding must acquire community development approaches, as it is only through developing communities’ strengths and capacities that sustainable peace can be achieved. Furthermore, this paper argues that community development can be understood as synonymous to peacebuilding.

Mainstream peacebuilding approaches tend to assume that a conflict settlement must be in place before the process of social and economic development can begin. Humanitarian rather than development aid is therefore the norm for countries emerging from conflict, even after the violence has receded. Yet a recent evaluation of a UNDP project in the Democratic Republic of Congo concludes that development can be an effective tool to build peace, even in the midst of violence. This article discusses the efficacy of community-based peacebuilding efforts to develop sustainable peace in conflict-torn communities. Using participatory action research (PAR) is a powerful means of developing sustainable solutions to a conflict: It provides the means to test peace theories and draw upon a community's knowledge and strengths in order to develop interventions. The knowledge gained can be lost if not understood within national or regional contexts, particularly if there is divergence between interests that can destroy community-based peacebuilding accomplishments. Holistic approaches facilitate sustainable peace and foster learning applicable to other situations. Two case studies, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, identified broad principles that potentially can be applied in the development of policies and practices. In the Nigerian case, two communities had experienced years of conflict. The PAR component was based on participatory dialogue. In the Zimbabwe case, political conflict was resolved through the development of a mutually beneficial peace garden. The study aimed at investigating the effect of community projects on peace building in Somalia. The study was guided by four objectives; to determine the effect of economic projects on peace building in Mogadishu, Somalia, to find out the effect of social projects on peace building in Mogadishu, Somalia, to assess the impact of women empowerment projects on peace building in Mogadishu, Somalia, to find out the effect of education projects on peace building in Mogadishu, Somalia. The study used a descriptive design; this type of design describes what exists and help to uncover new facts. The study selected a sample of 243 respondents from the different segments of the population in Mogadishu Somalia to determine the effect of community projects in peace building in Somalia. The study used a questionnaire to collect data. The collected data was first checked for errors in the entries, and any unexpected values. The researcher used descriptive analysis, percentages and frequencies to analyze the results of questionnaire using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS version 22).The study used mean and standard deviation analysis for descriptive statistics while correlation and regression analysis were used for inferential statistics. The study investigated the effect of economic projects on peace building in Mogadishu Somalia and discovered that there is a significant relationship between economic projects and peace building in Somalia. This was determined by the regression analysis between peace building and economic projects. The study investigated the effect of social projects on peace building and discovered that social projects have a significant effect on peace building in Somalia. The regression analysis indicated that there is a significant relationship between peace building and social projects. Social Projects like health care that aim at providing health care are important in peace building. The study investigated the impact of women empowerment projects on peace building in Mogadishu Somalia and discovered that there is a significant relationship between women empowerment projects and peace building in Somalia. Capacity building projects for women promotes women engagement in peace negotiating tables which sustains peace initiatives. The study investigated the effect of education projects on peace building in Mogadishu Somalia and found out that there is a significant relationship between education projects and peace building in Mogadishu, Somalia. To build lasting peace after violent conflicts in Somalia needs approaches that involve the local communities, the study recommended continued implementation of community projects since the study discovered that community based approaches through implementation of community projects are an effective approach to peace building

Peace and development

SIPRI looks at the long-term causes of insecurity to understand how societies identify and navigate paths to sustainable peace.

Developing and sustaining peace requires an understanding of the root causes of conflict and insecurity. SIPRI looks at what fuels conflict and what drives long-term, positive change by analysing economic, social, political and environmental factors. We contribute to both research and dialogue in order to inform policy and practice to forge a path to peace. 

Our work in this field is broad, with topics ranging from corruption in the security sector, inclusive peacebuilding to climate change. Conflicts are rarely caused by one single factor; often several issues play a role to reinforce and exacerbate each other. Our analysis is also multidisciplinary and applies a variety of social sciences and methods. SIPRI’s research reflects the complexity of conflict drivers and the relationships between them, as well as how they differ across contexts.

A crucial part of SIPRI’s work on peace and development is the   Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development . Held every spring, the Stockholm Forum brings together senior researchers, policymakers and practitioners to discuss and address the most pressing peacebuilding issues.
