Hichki Movie Review: An Overtly Accessible, Optimistic And By-The-Books Take On A Complex Condition

Director: Siddharth P. Malhotra

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Neeraj Kabi, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Harsh Mayar, Hussain Dalal, Shivkumar Subramaniam, Supriya Pilgaonkar

Perhaps there's a subconscious reason Hichki equips its Tourette syndrome afflicted protagonist, Naina Mathur ( Rani Mukerji ), with a specific kind of vocal and motor tic. It has a lot to do with the kind of movie Hichki chooses to be, and the broader brand of cinematic genre it occupies. Her vocal tic – that is, the sound her neuropsychiatric disorder forces her to produce – is not characterized by the more common 'throat-clearing' spasms or the more sensationalized Coprolalia (involuntary swearing bouts, last seen in Ruben Ostlund's Palme d'Or winning The Square ). In a country like ours, such tics might have easily translated Hichki into an insensitive comedy. Hence, Mukerji's tic – an upbeat "Cha-Cha" occasionally interspersed with a low-key "Va-Va" – is designed in a way that every time this happens, the reflexive lateral neck jerk requires her to visibly course-correct her face and determinedly meet gazes to continue her interactions. This provides the actress with an opportunity to express her strength – in her voice, her eyes – every few seconds, with the 'Va-Va' almost making it seem as if she were applauding herself.

The "feeling" of these sounds automatically lend her a sob-story-hating underdog attitude – one that is supposed to make an otherwise complicated condition an overtly accessible, optimistic and by-the-books picture of socioeconomic relevance. Even her motor tic – a rapid sequence of chin-brushes with her wrists – appears customized to advertise a sort of dust-your-pants-and-move-on personality. It indicates that we aren't meant to empathize with her as much as we are supposed to mock the ignorance of those she is destined to inspire.

That director Siddharth P. Malhotra, too, like many before him, is unable to distinguish between the nuances of a film about children for adults and a "children's film" is another sign of Hindi cinema's abusive relationship with the mainstream language.

The film is therefore constructed to highlight this readymade brightness, which is why the makers aren't just satisfied with the hard "humanity" of her story. It isn't enough for them that Naina beats the odds by becoming a high school teacher – a personal childhood-to-adult struggle in its own right, as depicted by Brad Cohen's Front of the Class , the book that Hichki is based on. The Cha-Cha is, for Hichki' s writers, instead a dance that defines the rhythm of a larger movement. Here, this larger movement is centered on the pitfalls of the Indian education system. Hence, the film is often torn between educating and education. Are we to embrace the conflicts of Tourette's through a done-to-death school story populated with villainous professors and PSA chalk metaphors, or are we to address the traditional stubbornness of the Indian teacher-student dichotomy through our flawed perception of disability?

Naina's journey is only made to begin within the underprivileged atmosphere of St. Notker High School's 9F classroom, containing 14 slum-dwelling "failures" under the 'Right to Education' Act. As is the norm of Hindi Underdog cinema, the circumstances she must fight are given the face of cardboard caricatures – the sniggering Mr. Wadia (Neeraj Kabi) whose sophisticated suit-and-tie look is to represent the elitism of A-class Disney privilege, and Naina's broken-home situation that is to represent a traumatic childhood.

Unlike the clear-mindedness of Taare Zameen Par , Hichki employs her condition as a device to service the formulaic spectrum of "social message" cinema. At times, her uniqueness is almost incidental to the crass classism of the poor-v/s-rich fairytale. She could have been virtually any of the popular mentor stereotypes, not least Aamir Khan's characters in TZP and Secret Superstar . It's understandable that she inspires the kids on a spiritual level, in more of a never-blame-your-circumstances manner. But the makers seem to believe that it's Tourette's that also defines her unorthodox tutoring ways, too – that is, clichéd montages of a teacher creatively decoding the concepts of parabolas and motion using eggs and basketballs in a practical environment, and unoriginal scenes that have her pinpoint the untapped talents of each student (the gambler is good at math, the vegetable chopper at chemistry).

Unlike the clear-mindedness of Taare Zameen Par , Hichki employs her condition as a device to service the formulaic spectrum of "social message" cinema.

Usually, either we see a down-and-out teacher rejuvenated by the prospect of turning around the fortunes of rejected students, or we see a differently abled adult finally identifying an environment of acceptance and understanding after many unsuccessful attempts. It's the film's insistence on merging the emotional loudness of these two separate underdog genres that makes Hichki distinctly manipulative and forgettable.

Mukerji's performance, as previously mentioned, is at the mercy of her character – which alternates between being subject and subplot, according to the whims of a greedy two-pronged biopic. Again, the young actors are made to narrate the essence of their nature through dialogues rather than simply converse with one another through words. That director Siddharth P. Malhotra, too, like many before him, is unable to distinguish between the nuances of a film about children for adults and a "children's film" is another sign of Hindi cinema's abusive relationship with the mainstream language. And it won't be the last time we realize that, to distract us from an inherent allergy of story-making, 'social awareness' might in fact be a nervous tic that commercial filmmaking is unwilling to shake off.

This 5-Star Hindi Drama on Amazon Prime Will Tug at Your Heartstrings from Start to Finish

Author image: nakeisha campbell bio

Based on the trailer alone, I knew Hichki was going to be something special. Perhaps it was look of joy on Ms. Mathur’s face when she insisted that she was “born to be a teacher”—even as she hiccupped uncontrollably. Or maybe it’s just the fact that I’m a huge sucker for underdog movies (and this Hindi drama definitely fits the bill). Either way, I sensed that this movie would tug at my heartstrings from start to finish, and my prediction was spot-on.

For those who are unfamiliar with the film, Hichki (Hindu for “hiccup”) is a heartwarming tale that speaks to the power of hope and determination in spite of the odds. Based on the true story of Brad Cohen , a teacher and author who has severe Tourette syndrome, the movie centers on Ms. Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji), an aspiring educator who struggles to find a teaching job due to her speech impediment. When she finally lands a job at her alma mater, she’s assigned to teach a group of troublesome, underprivileged students who are treated like outsiders. Will her positive spirit and enthusiasm be enough to turn things around?

Now available on Amazon Prime , the Hindi-language film starts off with Naina going through multiple interviews and facing rejection after rejection, and though this clearly takes an emotional toll, she continues to carry herself with confidence and dignity. Skeptical employers who try to plant doubt in her mind are met with clever comebacks, proving that Naina’s disorder has nothing to do with her intellect or teaching ability. And just like that, I’m already taken by Naina’s character. Not only does she deal with countless job rejections, but there’s also her unsupportive father, who insists that she switch fields for a better-paying career. Still, she persists, going as far as to apply at her alma mater, St. Notker's School, six times before she’s finally given a chance.

Naina’s sheer resilience and optimism is awe-inspiring throughout the film, but it’s not the only aspect that makes this movie so captivating. Hichki also touches on relevant issues like classism and the many effects of poverty on education. For instance, upon arriving at St. Notker’s, Naina takes notice of class divisions among the students, where high-class elites are accepted and groomed as top scholars while poor students, who were only admitted to fulfill a government quota, are largely ignored. And when none of her pupils’ parents show up for a parent-teacher conference, Naina visits their homes and is stunned to see their harsh living conditions in the slums.

But even with its tearjerker scenes and timely commentary about poverty, Hichki maintains a hopeful tone. While the students lash out and attempt to push their teacher away, it’s clear that they want to learn and be treated like their rich peers—and Naina expertly builds on that. It’s impossible to not burst with pride as she instills confidence through her unique teaching methods and helps these students grow.

Simply put, this film is not just a love letter to those who struggle with rejection, but also, a powerful reminder that many of us wouldn’t be where we are today without an inspiring teacher like Ms. Naina Mathur.

Purewow Rating: 5 Out Of 5 Stars

Hichki not only sheds light on the very real effects of poverty on education, but it will also give you a deeper appreciation for the educators in your life.

Hichki Film Review: Rejecting Toxic Standards Of Normalcy

Featured Image

Directed by Sidharth P Malhotra and produced by Maneesh Sharma and Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films , Hichki deals with an offbeat subject that is rarely depicted and discussed in popular cinema.

Through protagonist Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji), who has Tourette Syndrome, Hichki intelligently attempts to break stereotypes and debunks myths related to those living on the fringes of society. How many of us have actually heard of Tourette Syndrome before the release of this movie?

I think not even a fraction of our population would have known about this neurological and motor disorder. The person who has this disorder may involuntarily make sudden, brief, intermittent movements or sounds that might significantly interfere with communication, daily functioning and quality of life.

By linking the realities of the economic weaker section of the society on one hand and a person confronting a disorder on the other, Hichki brings out the exclusionary tendencies of our society.

Naina Mathur suffers exclusion even while studying in an inclusive school. In the same way, a group of students belonging to an economically weaker section of society are seen with contempt and completely neglected in the same educational set up. The sarcastic statement of Principal of St. Noker’s High School clearly indicates his disapproval of inclusive structures when he says, “ Thanks to Right to Education ” they have to accommodate students from nearby slums.

How many of us have actually heard of Tourette Syndrome before the release of this movie?

Fourteen students are lumped together in Class 9 F with a teacher with Tourette Syndrome, who after several interviews and numerous rejections, lands her dream job as a full-time teacher. The class in the elite school that is assigned to her comprises of disobedient, arrogant and headstrong students. Those who are unaccepted, unacknowledged and abhorred are bunched together.

Hichki beautifully depicts how persons with disorders and disabilities are singled out. Whether it is her own father, her classmates, her teachers in school, her employers, her colleagues or society, Naina Mathur is seen as a person unfit to mingle in society. Though her h ichkis (hiccups) or the involuntary sounds due to her syndrome could be briefly suppressible, they are shown to be triggered by environmental stimuli. She has to p ut up with stares and sniggers.

She is mocked and bullied even by her students. No one is sure of her capabilities but she herself is shown to be damn sure of her potential when she tells her interviewers, “ Meri speech me Tourettes hai, meri intellect me nahi” (My speech is affected by Tourettes, not my intellect).

Also Read: So How Has Indian Cinema Portrayed Women With Disabilities?

This is exactly what we, the people with disabilities, face every day. Society has minimal expectations of us and our abilities are always put under scanners. Even her father is apprehensive about her abilities and frequently tries to snatch away her right to decide and choose, whether it is her career or her favourite dish in the restaurant!

He is embarrassed and ashamed of her disorder and tries to hide it from people. He gets irritated by her speech impairment and frustratingly tells her to “speak normally”. Although there’s no cure for Tourette syndrome, her educated yet ignorant father, like hundreds of disabled children’s parents, is seen grieving at his failure to get her disorder “fixed”.

Naina portrays an individual who has completely accepted her limitations and verbally hits back saying, “ This is ‘normal’ for me as my syndrome is now a part of me and I don’t need to be ‘fixed’ ”. She does not even mind making fun of her tics. While talking to someone on the phone, she is seen telling someone that it was the sound of her dog barking!

She makes her weakness her strength and stands alone against the whole world where she has been singled out for making odd noises, grunting in class and just being fidgety at all times. Naina overcomes all challenges to help her students realise their true potential. She not only stands for her own rights but also fights for the slum children and their rights. She openly talks about equal opportunities.

The stigma attached to the economically disadvantaged as well those with disorders and disabilities is openly seen when Mr Wadia, another science teacher says, “ They did not belong here, they never did, they never will ”. She retorts back saying, “They will sir, shayad humne koshish hi nahi ki that they do belong” (Perhaps no one has even tried to make them feel that they also ‘belong’). Here comes the full meaning of inclusion when we all feel and make others feel that they do “belong”. Every one of us is part of the same society irrespective of physical abilities or economic status.

Hichki here also turns out to mean our own reluctance to bring about changes.

Hichki also gives a strong message that before the world accepts and embraces diversity, we need to acknowledge and accept our reality in a positive and healthy way. If we internalize discrimination, the chasm between ‘they’ and ‘us’ will never get filled.

In the end, this change is depicted when 9 F is seen participating in the National Science Fair with other students and Naina is heard stating that, “ equations in books and syllabi remain the same. Equations among the students changed a little and some new equations were formed. Like me, others also befriended their Tourettes. Sometimes I think what is Tourettes? Is it the presence of strange sounds and hiccups or just our hesitation or unwillingness? Because it is a matter of our perception that determines the difference between why and why not? “

Hichki here also means our own reluctance to bring about changes and when we hear, “ Har hichki sunayi nahi deti ” (every hiccup is not heard): the message is loud and clear. We all have our shortcomings, unknown fears and apprehension. We need to change mindsets and clear the fog of doubts. Sometimes mental hurdles become more problematic than the physical limitations which we can cross when we are accepted unconditionally, not only by our own self but also by everyone around us.

Even the title song attempts to address the rampant discrimination in society towards a preference for fair skin, women with disabilities, transgender and other marginalized groups. It is symbolic of the mental blocks which we all have towards those who are unable to ‘fit into’ standards of normalcy created by age old perceptions.

'Hichki' review: An emotionally inspiring film

Film: Hichki Cast: Rani Mukerji, Neeraj Kabi, Supriya Pilgaonkar Director: Sidharth P Malhotra Star Rating: 3/5

Hichki hits the ground running. And then keeps running for a while. Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji) is attending an interview for the teacher's job at a school and she must explain Tourette Syndrome to everyone like they are five years old. We get this definition multiple times. In different interviews. Naina defining it to an auditorium full of adults.

We get different reaction shots. She gets the job at a school named after Notker the Stammerer. A school bang in the middle of Mumbai named after a monk from what is modern day Switzerland. But for Hichki, Naina and the subjects Malhotra wants to talk about, it works.

At Notker's, Naina is given the task of managing 9F, the section named after a loaded letter, informing the humourless nature of the person who named it. It was probably Mr Wadia (a prim and wry Neeraj Kabi), the class teacher of 9A, gifted with gifted - economically, socially or by any measure - students. Wadia was never for the Tourette Syndrome-afflicted Naina, and her taking on 9F, made of students from underprivileged backgrounds, amuses him, and he counts down the number of days she'll survive teaching students, who, according to Wadia, don't belong there.

The Right to Education term is thrown around and we meet the kids, more than just education wrapped in their minds. One of the girls might not have brought a lunch box but she has a bag of okra to chop when there is no class. Another boy is never seen without a pair of headphones, and breaks into a rap from stray phrases, clearly modelled on the street music scene of Mumbai. As if to stress on the authenticity, we get a song with rap in Tamil that mentions Dharavi.

The first half of Hichki (based on Brad Cohen’s Front of the Class) is the classic underdog film - there is the inspiration in Naina, someone who has had an experience of othering, as the only person empathetic towards the kids. The kids themselves unwelcoming of Naina, who must win them over gradually. The evil villain in Mr Wadia who is just waiting to see Naina and her proteges fail. An ultimatum of final exams.

The practical jokes the kids pull to drive away Naina are fun and Malhotra makes sure they don't exist in vacuum. They tell her a few things about the kids and it becomes a learning experience for both the parties. There are some nice touches. The school principal, who has to manage Naina and Wadia, concerned but cynical. There's also a fun offhand moment where the staff room pervert is the teacher who is teaching poetry.

Malhotra also has two reflective sequences where the kids and Naina try to enter each other's spaces. When 9F's PTA meeting becomes a colossal failure, Naina flips the idea and visits the spaces occupied by her students. What was supposed to be a chance for the parents to get to know their kids becomes a chance for the teacher to get to know the life of her kids and their parents. As Naina's desensitising process becomes complete, the kids have their own. Their attitude towards her changes and Malhotra chooses to film their realisation and acknowledgement in a posh outdoorsy coffee shop, the kind of space inhabited by Naina. The setting plays up the drama, but it establishes the meeting halfway deal between Naina and her students.

For a film that surrounds itself with disability, social inequality, caste, class and something like Right to Education, Hichki does have a cookie-cutter approach. It deals with most of these issues at a surface level, hoping we'd buy into its good intentions and empathy signalling wisdom. Its characters are lovable and Mukerji comes up with an unfussy performance that goes a long way in keeping Hichki interesting. We throw around the phrase "well calibrated performance" but in the case of Naina Mathur, there might be something literal about that.

Tourette Syndrome isn't a visible disorder that one can understand and develop a method to perform. It is undefinable, and its tics can be intangible, so an actor can bring her own idiosyncrasies to the performance. Rani Mukerji seems to know when to let it play out, when her tics are pronounced and when to say something without an interruption from the tic. Hichki says the right things, shows the right things (there might be a redemption arc that is problematic in the end though) but it could have been more, a lot more.

I loved the movie. Since it is stressing on this teacher and student relationship. Being a teacher is actually a Challenge task because you are creator where you get different students who different perspective about studying and pursuing a career.
I would recommend this movie because it also taught me to be brave and clearly ignore the bad vibe if you get due to your physical appearance.
So thank you so much for this lovely movie.

Hichki Review: Rani Mukerji's Heartfelt Performance Scores Full Marks On The Report Card!

Hichki movie review: here comes a 'feel-good' film with a remarkable performance by rani mukerji. she gives you enough reasons to embrace this 'hichki' with a smile., recommended video.

hichki movie review pdf

'There are no bad students, only bad teachers', says Rani Mukerji's Naina Mathur to a fellow teacher at an important juncture in Hichki. A single scene so powerful that leaves you with a lump in your throat! Well, Hichki is made up of several such heart-warming moments which make you laugh and shed a tear. To teach is to touch a life forever and that's what the central protagonist of the film believes in. But, the journey isn't a bed of roses for her; especially when she has her own sets of 'hichkis' to overcome. What comes as a wonderful surprise is that the film doesn't turn into a sob story even in the most dramatic moment and that's such a fresh breather!

hic

Coming to the plot, Hichki begins with Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji) giving an interview for the job of a teacher. The panel of interviewers are quite impressed with her multiple degrees. Until, Naina makes a gruntling sound. Eyebrows are raised. She tells them she suffers from Tourette's syndrome, a nervous system disorder marked by involuntary motor tics. Another job application goes down the drain. But not before, our sassy Naina decides to give them a crash course in her disorder.

After numerous rejections, Naina finally lands a job at a Catholic school whose naming founder St Notker had a speech impediment. But a bigger surprise awaits in store for her there! She's entrusted the responsibility of 9F, a classroom of underprivileged rebellious teens who have been written off by the elite crowd. The rest of the plot revolves around how Naina wins over these misfits and gives them wings to fly.

hich

Right from the first frame, Rani Mukerji makes a solid impression. She plays Naina Mathur with great conviction and makes sure you don't take your eyes off her even for a single second.

She's the emotional core of Hichki and carries the entire film efficiently on her sturdy shoulders. She's the kind of teacher who imparts physics lessons with boiled eggs making you wish that you had someone unconventional like her during your school days.

Watch out for the scene where she breaks down at a crucial point. It will leave you with goosebumps for sure! Playing a specially-abled character is a daunting task, but she pulls it off with gravitas and so effortlessly!

rani

By the end of the film, all I could say was, 'Rani, we would definitely love to see more of you on screen'.

Neeraj Kabi sails smoothly and has a winning scene towards the climax. A brilliant job by casting director Shanoo Sharma when it comes to bunch of kids. Particularly Harsh Mayar as Aatish who shows a fresh spark. Sachin Pilgaonkar and Supriya Pilgaonkar too put up a good show.

hich

Hichki is Siddharth P Malhotra's directorial debut and the man does a commendable job. Agreed, a sense of predictability creeps in at many points but Siddharth turns the tide in his favour by giving us touching moments which leave a mark.

Speaking about the flaws, the narrative does drag a bit and gets repetitive in some parts. While we know that Rani teaches Maths and Science to the kids, it's unclear about the rest of the subjects.

Another drawback is the film's music which lacks a recall value. A set of good songs could have been a bonus here.

Avinash Arun's cinematography has a breezy vibe and adds a nice hue. Shweta Venkat Mathew's editing is fine.

ranis

Hichki comes across as a 'feel-good' film with a remarkable performance by Rani Mukerji. She gives you enough reasons to embrace this 'hichki' with a smile. There's a dialogue in the film which goes like, 'School ke bahar zindagi jab imtihaan leti hai tab subject wise nahi leti'. Hichki, as a whole passes this exam with flying colors!

Hichki Movie Review: Rani Mukerji Gets Full Marks But This Film Is Not A Class Act

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Harsh Mayar, Shivkumar Subramaniam, Neeraj Kabi Director: Siddharth P Malhotra Rating: 2.5 Stars (out of 5) A novel plot idea is buried under an avalanche of narrative cliches in Hichki . In her comeback film, Rani Mukerji gives the role of a Tourette Syndrome-afflicted teacher all she has . Full marks there! However, Hichki , directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, isn't the kind of class act that does justice to the film's larger purpose of underscoring the need for inclusion. It is marred by more hiccups than its wafer-thin storyline can handle. The screenplay suffers from a syndrome that Bollywood fans are familiar with - it is a condition characterized by an obsession with amplified sentimentality and the tendency to offer superficial commentary.

Hichki Movie Review: A still from the film. (Image courtesy: Yash Raj Films )

In the opening moments, the protagonist is interviewed by the trustees of a school. At the outset, none of them has any clue what Tourette's is. They are wiser by the time the spirited heroine is done with them. But one of them still suggests to her that she should cannot be a teacher. Look for another calling, he suggests. Her parting riposte is defiant: if I have taught you about Tourette's in no time, I am sure I can handle students in a classroom, too. Hichki isn't only about an individual's struggle to wrest and secure her rightful place in the world. Its spotlight is also on a lopsided and complacent education system that allows no leeway to those born on the wrong side of the tracks - in this case, on the wrong side of a highway and a gutter that runs alongside it. The bitter battle for acceptance waged by the pivotal character and her underprivileged students plays out on two different planes, the lines crossing each other at times, but the drama never assumes truly rousing proportions.

hichki instagram

The neurological condition that hampers the protagonist's career prospects certainly makes Hichki a unique film in the context of Indian cinema. The novelty factor does not, however, transcend the unusual nature of the personal battles that Naina Mathur must fight. In the early portions of the film, the audience is told that she has been rejected by 18 schools simply on account of her speech and nervous system defect. But she refuses to give up on her dream. When the strong-willed lady does eventually land a job in a missionary school named after a stuttering Catholic saint who, many centuries ago, rose above his speech impairment thanks to the power of his intellect, her disorder is reduced to a mere plot detail and the focus of the film shifts to the fraught teacher-student dynamics defined by the class divide that separates 14 slum-dwelling students and the rest of this school for affluent children.

Hichki Movie Review: A still from the film. (Image courtesy: hichkithefilm )

Naina Mathur's wards - they are seen as absolute no-hopers and dumped in 9F, a division carved out for slum children in an upscale school to fulfil the requirements of the Right to Education Act - have something in common with her - a debilitating disadvantage. Hers is strictly physical, theirs is socio-economic and, by extension, psychological. She instinctively understands them; they take quite a while to grasp the importance of her mission. The misfits under Naina's charge are treated like "municipality garbage" by the school authorities, represented by a snooty senior teacher and head of the student council (Neeraj Kabi), whose sole purpose in life seems to be show up the 9F students - five girls and nine boys. Their new teacher knows precisely what is going on, having faced prejudice all her life. She decides that the children deserve a fair shot at a better life. The principal gives her four months - that is the time that is left to go for the final examinations - to prove that these students belong here. Despite facing numerous hurdles, including the students' open hostility towards her, which takes the form of outright bullying and pranks, Naina, using unconventional teaching methods, proceeds to show them that there is percentage in unleashing their inner potential and harnessing their angst correctly.

Hichki

 • Suffering from Tourette Syndrome, Naina gets assigned a class of defiant students and must ensure that her students realise their potential.
 • Hichki is a story about a woman who turns her most daunting weakness into her biggest strength. Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji) is an aspiring teacher who suffers from Tourette Syndrome. After several interviews and numerous rejections, she lands her dream job as a full-time teacher in one of the most elite schools in the city. However, she soon realises that the class she has been assigned comprises of defiant and impish students who can't seem to keep out of trouble. Despite a few initial hiccups, Naina must do whatever she can to ensure that her students realise their true potential, and defy all the odds against them. — Official Source
 • Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji), an aspiring teacher with a BEd and MSc, suffers from Tourette syndrome. Her condition causes her to make uncontrollable sounds likened to hiccups. Although she has been unsuccessful for the past 5 years in landing a teaching job, she is supported in her ambitions by her mother (Supriya Pilgaonkar) and her younger brother (Hussain Dalal). It is revealed that her father (Sachin Pilgaonkar) divorced her mother several years earlier, which is why Naina's relationship with him is strained. During her childhood, she was expelled from multiple schools and would witness her parents arguing about whether she is normal or special. One day, Naina receives an offer to teach at the prestigious St. Notker's School, a job which she had applied to 5 times before. When asked why she was so persistent for the particular school, Naina explains that she herself graduated from St. Notker's and was inspired by Mr. Khan (Vikram Gokhale), a former principal. He had believed in her and announced that she would never be expelled for being different. Naina's unwavering confidence impresses the current school committee, and they assign her to 9F, a new class section. It is revealed that the school was desperate to hire her as all other teachers had failed to get the class to cooperate. Naina notices that the students are unruly, misbehaved and are visibly different. Shyamlal, the school's peon (Asif Basra), discloses to her that the 9F students belong to families from a nearby slum and that they were given admission to fill the government-prescribed quota for the underprivileged. On the first day of class, Naina's students imitate her sounds and mock her. She decides to teach them in an interactive way, determined to show resilience when dealing with the class. The students prank her with liquid nitrogen, and this causes a mild explosion that shatters the classroom windows. Naina prevents the class from being expelled by taking the blame and saying that it was a badly executed chemistry example. Mr. Wadia (Neeraj Kabi), the teacher of class 9A, strongly dislikes the 9F students. His class is composed of student prefects, who are academically excellent. Naina challenges Mr. Wadia that students from 9F will earn the prefect badges as well. The school's annual Science Fair project is assigned to 9A, who are prevented from mingling with 9F by Mr. Wadia. They yearn to experience the interactive experiments that 9F gets to partake in but Mr. Wadia dismisses them as inferior to textbook learning. Meanwhile, 9F warms up to Naina and begin wholeheartedly participating in class; she teaches them to be brave in their pursuit of knowledge and helps them realize their individual strengths. Aatish (Harsh Mayar), the sole student who remains cold towards Naina, secretly sabotages 9A's project in his vengeance. This is discovered by Mr. Wadia and the Principal (Shivkumar Subramaniam) decides to expel the 9F class. Once again, Naina prevents this by promising that the class will pass their final exams, but she is unable to prevent their suspension from attending school till the exams. Dejected, she tells her students that they have shattered her attempt to help them. Aatish's classmates help him realize his mistake and he publicly express regret, promising Naina that the class has realized her value. All of 9F studies diligently for their exams. Shyamlal supplies Aatish copies of the wrong question paper so they would fail, but when he presents them to his classmates, they refuse to cheat, and he gives up on the idea as well. Exam results prove Naina's promise as the 9F students pass successfully, with two of the students even achieving first rank. However, the class is accused of cheating as Shyamlal confesses of supplying question papers, and the Principal decides to publicly expel them during the prefect pinning ceremony. Prior to the event, one of Mr. Wadia's students reveals that he bribed Shyamlal into supplying the wrong question papers, and he realizes that 9F did not cheat. Mr. Wadia takes to the stage and announces that he, himself, wrongfully tried to fail the students. He then applauds Naina's Transformative teaching and asks her to pin the prefect badge to her students which ranked first. She later tells him that she doubts that he bribed Shyamlal. Mr. Wadia smiles and says that he doubts she caused a liquid nitrogen explosion. With the combined efforts of 9A and 9F, the Science Fair project is rebuilt and wins the competition. After that she served to the school, St.Notker for 25 years and attained success and prestige. After 25 years, Naina is shown to be the Principal, and she narrates that she is finally retiring from teaching. As she walks out of the school, the school's students praise her and bid farewell. The last to happily bid her are the students of 9F, Senior Pankaj (Kunal Shinde) who are now successful adults. .
