Premalu Review: A Joyous Comedy Populated With A Bunch Of The Most Loveable Losers

Premalu ’s biggest LOL moment takes place when the romance tries to address the biggest problem we see with its predecessors. In a clever bit of self-referentiality, it acknowledges its protagonist’s stalker- ly  tendencies and uses that information to deliver on a joke that uses wordplay to replace stalking with stock-market investing. It’s exactly as silly as it sounds, but when Naslen plants this line with an incredible amount of conviction, you remember how a film needn’t apply a holier-than-thou attitude, even when it tries to be politically correct.

This is one of the many little things that add up to make what we can now call the Girish AD signature. The director of much-loved Thaneer Mathan Dinangal  and Super Sharanya, finds comedy in the mundane and love in all the places we’ve seen before. Come to think of it, there’s a certain cleverness hidden beneath its title too, given how it’s what Malayalis think the word for ‘love’ is in Telugu. What gives an otherwise generic love story this edge is the fact that it’s set in Hyderabad, a place that’s super under-utilised in Malayalam cinema. And then when the writers populate this world with a group of absolutely loveable characters, each scene feels like a revelation.

A test to understand how Premalu works is when one tries to explain the film’s plot. Apart from describing it as something utterly generic like how it’s a love story about a loser and a hyper-focused girl who meet in Hyderabad, there’s not much one can add in terms of a story. Yet the writing is so special that it’s nearly three-hour runtime feels only as long as an Instagram reel. This includes a throwaway line about how Reenu (a delightful Mamitha Baiju) wants to get married and have a child before she’s thirty because she’s been through a terrible breakup. The film spends exactly 10 seconds to give us this info but that’s enough for us to understand her priorities and her genuine need to feel like she’s being taken care of.

On the other end is a clueless man-child named Sachin (Naslen), who finds no motivation to grow up. Instead of forcing Reenu to be his catalyst to force his transformation, the film is comfortable leaving him as is including a line later on about how Reenu is happy to take care of him, even if he doesn’t become successful. Of course this bit sounds like the absolute male fantasy, but at least we get a glimpse of a relationship where the woman is clearly more dominant without trying to make a big deal out of it. Even heavily-loaded information, like how Sachin became who he is a result of his constantly quarrelling parents, is treated with sensitivity, but without it ever turning into anything remotely melodramatic.

And if Super Sharanya  used the Ajith Menon character as a parody of the hyper-masculine Arjun Reddy -types, here we get the other end of the spectrum in a hilarious character named Aadhi. This toxic positive gentleman is the absolute opposite of a man like Sachin yet you find how such people remain toxic in their own way, even if everything about them seems great on “Bumble”. The exchanges between Aadhi and Sachin are some of the film’s funniest and even this seemingly silly duel results in making interesting points about the psyche of the pseudo feminist modern male.

With perfect casting all around and a special talent to handle deep matters with loads of comedy, Premalu  reinstates Girish AD as one of the most exciting Malayali filmmakers around and an auteur of the absolute sweetest kind.

'Vaazha': Fathers and children try to understand each other in this slice-of-life comedy | Review

How did the all-purpose banana plantain, or 'Vaazha,' come to represent the modern-day slacker in Kerala? It's a mystery that remains unsolved. In 'Vaazha', starring Siju Sunny, Amith Mohan Rajeswari, Joemon Jyothir, Anuraj OB, and Saaf, this metaphor comes to life through the struggles of five aimless young people burdened by their parents' expectations. The film explores the familiar yet emotional themes of youthful angst, anger, and inner turmoil of young men. Directed by Anand Menen, the movie offers a thoughtful examination of what it means to be a 'Vaazha' and the challenges that come with parenting one.

Written by Vipin Das, of Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey fame, the movie tells the tale of five slackers, all of whom grew into being friends from being in the same mental space. Just like in his last outing, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil, Vipin Das hits the right spots in getting the attitude of the five slackers right, providing much of the humour in the first half. The main cast provides an honestly good performance, which makes a likely case they were slackers too once. Joemon Jyothir, with his impeccable sense of timing, stands out among the quintet, delivering the peak moments of humour, especially in the scenes with his father, played by Noby Marcose.

But as the young men grow from the carefree environments of their schools and colleges and take their first steps in adulting, the movie shifts tonally and this is where Vipin's script falters. The film does touch on the lives of those who find success, but these narratives feel a bit flat, lacking the depth and definition needed to make them truly resonate.

At one point, two love stories happen simultaneously, only to disappear with the same energy they came in. The stories go so wildly in the second half, trying to accommodate different points of view that by the time the movie ends, you're left puzzled, wondering what was the whole point.

Despite its shortcomings, Vaazha keeps you hooked to the screen with its moments of humour, which feels structurally similar to the kind of humour content one sees on social media. The advantage here is the casting of internet sensation, Hashiree and his friends, whose mere presence cracks a smile on your face without you even knowing it. The film provides these brief moments, peppered throughout the film and the icing on top is Basil Joseph as an empathetic police officer in an extended cameo, doing exactly what was meant to do.

Apart from the main actors, the movie also tries to show the side of their fathers who go through societal humiliation and a sense of hopelessness. The seasoned casting here provided much stability in the emotional scenes, pushing the youngsters to try and match the same level of depth in their performances.

Vaazha is the story of both those who struggle to succeed in life and who struggle to meet their parents' expectations.  But while the latter confront their demons long after they establish themselves, the former find themselves stuck in limbo, wondering where to take the next step. This could be what Anand Menen struggled with as well. But for all its faults, if you ever find yourself catching a slacker mood, pop this on your TV, and hopefully, you'll come out laughing out loud, to say the least.

Ganesh raj’s film, centring on a nearly hundred years old couple, is a feel-good family entertainer with a novel theme that ends rather tamely and predictably.

Happiness is Ganesh Raj’s calling card; one would struggle to find an unhappy moment in his work. Even the biggest of crises would seem rather inconsequential when treated light-heartedly. In the world that he envisions, warm colours pop out of every other frame. Light, feel-good music goes on and on in the background. Tears are mostly out of happiness, rather than sorrow. For that matter, his debut movie itself was titled Aanandam (happiness).

While Aanandam was set around a group of youngsters on a college trip, in his sophomore work Pookkaalam , it is the older generation — a couple who are nearly a hundred years old and have been married for eighty years — who takes centre stage. On the day of their granddaughter Elsy’s (Annu Antony) betrothal, Ittoop (Vijayaraghavan) accidentally discovers an old letter written fifty years ago. The letter threatens to cast a cloud on the happy occasion, bringing up to the surface the family’s buried secrets

Pookkaalam (Malayalam)

The novel theme is what drives much of the movie, but Ganesh, who has also scripted it, ensures that it does not tread on terrains that are too hot to handle, just stopping short every time the movie threatens to slip out of the feel-good zone. Well, it is not wrong to play to your strengths. It is the kind of material that could have ended up as a heart-wrenching tale if handled by someone else.

Much of Pookkaalam focuses on the warm relationship between Ittoop and his wife Kochuthresia (KPAC Leela), and the large extended family around them, at present. Yet, it takes periodic shifts to the past, of their early days of struggles and personal losses, which gives us an idea of the impact that the crisis would have on the close-knit family. The crisis also shines a light on the unpleasant episodes that people wilfully forget to keep the ship sailing smoothly. People who seem sober in their old age might have done terrible things in the past. At one point, Kochuthresia ominously tells Ittoop, “We have been living in this house for eighty years. If we dig deep around here, we might find uncomfortable things.”

Ganesh attempts to balance every emotional moment quickly with a light-hearted scene, some working and some don’t. For instance, a running joke involving a junior advocate (Basil Joseph) and his old friend (Vineeth Sreenivasan), who is now a judge, seems a bit forced. Despite all the younger cast of actors around them, Vijayaraghavan and KPAC Leela hog all the limelight with their moving performances as the couple who are facing a crisis late in their lives. In the moments that he acts stern, Vijayaraghavan brings back memories of his father N.N.Pillai’s iconic character ‘Anjooran’ in Godfather .

ഇലയും നാരും മുതൽ പിണ്ടി വരെ ഗുണങ്ങളുള്ള സസ്യത്തിനും ഒരു ഗുണവും മണവും ഇല്ലാത്ത മക്കൾക്കും നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ ഒറ്റ പേരാണ് 'വാഴ'. 'വാഴ'യുടെ പേരിൽ ഒളിഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ കുസൃതിയും വിരോധാഭാസവും തന്നെയാണ് 'വാഴ'യുടെ ഇതിവൃത്തവും. ചിരിപ്പിച്ചും കരയിപ്പിച്ചും ചിന്തിപ്പിച്ചും തിയറ്ററിൽ ആരവം തീർക്കുകയാണ് നവാഗതനായ ആനന്ദ് മേനോന്റെ വാഴ. യുവതലമുറയുടെ ആഘോഷങ്ങളും ആകുലതകളും പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുന്ന ചിത്രം സൗഹൃദങ്ങളുടെ ഉത്സവം കൂടിയായി മാറുന്നു. സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയയിലൂടെ ശ്രദ്ധേയരായ  കണ്ടന്റ് ക്രിയേറ്റേഴ്സിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം തന്നെയാണ് വാഴയെ റിലീസിനു മുമ്പേ സജീവ ചർച്ചയാക്കിയത്. അവരെ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച എത്തിയ 2കെ കിഡ്സിനെ ചിത്രം നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തിയില്ല. ന്യൂജെൻ പിള്ളേർക്കിടയിൽ വാഴ ചിരിയുടെ മാലപടക്കം തീർത്തപ്പോൾ 90സ് കിഡ്സിനു ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്താവുന്ന ഒട്ടേറെ വൈകാരിക മൂഹുർത്തങ്ങളും സിനിമയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പുതുതലമുറക്കൊപ്പം സീനിയർ താരങ്ങളും മത്സരിച്ച് അഭിനയിക്കുന്നു. സമീപകാല മലയാള സിനിമകളിലെ പോലെ തന്നെ മറ്റൊരു ‘ആണാഘോഷ’ സിനിമയാണ് വാഴയും. 

മക്കളെ തങ്ങളുടെ ആഗ്രഹങ്ങൾക്ക് അനുസരിച്ച് വളർത്തുന്ന  മാതാപിതാക്കൾ, അവരുടെ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കൊത്ത് ഉയരാൻ കഴിയാത്ത മക്കൾ, ബാക്ക്ബെഞ്ചേഴ്സിന്റെ അർമാദങ്ങൾ, വീട്ടുക്കാർക്കു ഇല്ലാത്ത ആധിയുമായി നിറയുന്ന  നാട്ടുകാരും കുടുംബകാരും അങ്ങനെ പതിവ് കഥാപരിസരങ്ങൾ തന്നെയാണ് വാഴയിലും കാണാൻ കഴിയുക. വാഴയിലെ ഉഴപ്പൻമാരായ ആൺകൂട്ടത്തെ പോലെ ഒരു അന്തവും കുന്തവുമില്ലാതെയാണ് ആദ്യ പകുതി. കോമഡി ട്രാക്കിലൂടെയാണ് ഇടവേള വരെ സിനിമ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്നത്. രണ്ടാം പാതിയുടെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ സിനിമ ഇമോഷനൽ ഡ്രാമയിലേക്ക് ട്രാക്ക് മാറ്റുന്നു. നാടകീയമായ ട്രാക്കിലേക്ക് വഴുതി പോകുമോ എന്ന് സംശയിക്കുമ്പോൾ വീണ്ടും കോമഡി ട്രാക്കിലൂടെ സിനിമ താളം കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു. 

സിജു സണ്ണി, അമിത് മോഹൻ രാജേശ്വരി, ജോമോൻ ജ്യോതിർ, അനുരാജ്, സാഫ്, അൻഷിദ് അനു, ഹാഷിർ, അശ്വിൻ, ശ്രുതി മണികണ്ഠൻ, സിയ വിൻസെന്റ്, മീനാക്ഷി ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണൻ, പ്രിയ ശ്രീജിത്, സ്മിനു സിജു എന്നിവരെല്ലാം തകർത്തഭിനയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് ചിത്രത്തിൽ. യുവതാരങ്ങൾ കോമഡി രംഗങ്ങൾ അരങ്ങ് തകർത്തപ്പോൾ സീനിയർ താരങ്ങളായ ജഗദീഷ്, കോട്ടയം നസീർ, അസീസ് നെടുമങ്ങാട്, നോബി മാർക്കോസ്, ജിബിൻ ഗോപിനാഥ് എന്നിവർ ഇമോഷനൽ രംഗങ്ങളിലെ ഗംഭീര പ്രകടനങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് പ്രേക്ഷകരുടെ കണ്ണിൽ നനവ് പടർത്തി. സീനിയേഴ്സും ഇൻസ്റ്റഗ്രാം കണ്ടന്റ് ക്രിയേറ്റേഴ്സ് ഉൾപ്പടെ വലിയൊരു താരനിരയെ സിനിമയിൽ അണിനിരത്തുമ്പോഴും എല്ലാവർക്കും കൃത്യമായ സ്ക്രീൻ സ്പേസ് നൽകാനും സിനിമയ്ക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഷൂട്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞ് ഉർവശി പോയത് ട്രീറ്റ്മെന്റിന്; റോഷൻ വന്നത് ‘ടെസ്റ്റി’ന്; ക്രിസ്റ്റോ പറയുന്നു: ഉള്ളൊഴുക്കിലെ മഴ വീണത് ‘ഫെയ്ക്ക് റൂഫിൽ’!

‘ബയോപിക്ക് ഓഫ് എ ബില്യൺ ബോയ്സ്’ എന്ന ടാഗ് ലൈനോട് പ്രദർശനത്തിനു എത്തിയ ചിത്രം അക്ഷരാർഥത്തിൽ ആൺ തെമ്മാടിക്കൂട്ടങ്ങളുടെ ആഘോഷവും മഹത്വവത്ക്കരണവും തന്നെയാണ്. നാട്ടുകാർക്കും വീട്ടുകാർക്കും നിരന്തരം തലവേദനയാകുന്ന ആൺമക്കളുടെ ഗ്യാങിനെ ഹ്യൂമറിന്റെ അകമ്പടിയോടെയാണ് സിനിമ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രേക്ഷകർ ചിരിക്കാനുള്ള ഒരുപാട് മൂഹുർത്തങ്ങളും സിനിമയിലുണ്ട് എന്നിരുന്നാലും അവരുടെ ഗ്യാങ് ചെയ്യുന്ന എല്ലാ വൃത്തികേടുകളെയും കോമഡിയുടെ മേമ്പൊടി ചേർത്തു ന്യായീകരിക്കുന്നത് അരോജകമാകുന്നുണ്ട് ചിലപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും. 

ജയജയ ജയഹേ, ഗുരുവായൂർ അമ്പലനടയിൽ ഹിറ്റ് സിനിമകളുടെ സംവിധായകൻ വിപിൻ ദാസാണ് വാഴയുടെ രചന നിർവ്വഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ജയജയഹേയിൽ ടോക്സിക്കായ ഭർത്താവിനെ ഇടിച്ചു ഇരുത്തിയ നായികയിൽ നിന്ന് ഗുരുവായൂർ അമ്പലനടയിലേക്ക് വരുമ്പോൾ നായിക കേവലം അഴകിയ ലൈല മാത്രമാകുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു വിപിന്റെ തൂലികയിൽ. ഗുരുവായൂർ അമ്പലനടയിലെ അഴകിയ ലൈലയ്ക്കു അപ്പുറത്തേക്ക് സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കു സ്ക്രീൻ സ്പേസോ വ്യക്തിത്വമോ നൽകുന്നില്ല വാഴയിൽ തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത്. ജയജയഹേയിലെ പാരലൽ കോളജ് അധ്യാപകൻ കാർത്തികേയന്റെ പ്രേതം ഗുരുവായൂർ അമ്പലനടയിൽ എന്ന പോലെ വാഴയിലും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തിനെ പിന്തുടരുന്നുണ്ട്. 

കുടുംബത്തിനൊപ്പവും സുഹൃത്തുകൾക്കൊപ്പം ആസ്വദിക്കാവുന്ന ഒരു ഫാമിലി എന്റർടെയിസർ തന്നെയാണ് വാഴ. നാടോടികാറ്റിലും റാംജി റാം സ്പീക്കിങിലുമൊക്കെ ചർച്ചയാകുന്ന യുവതലമുറയുടെ തൊഴിൽ ഇല്ലായ്മയും സ്വത്വ പ്രതിസന്ധികളും 2024-ലും പ്രസക്തിയുണ്ടെന്ന് അടിവരയിടുന്നുണ്ട് ചിത്രം.

Vedaa Review: Sharvari Acts Amazingly, John Abraham Flexes Muscles, But The Movie Is Stretched & Boring

Vedaa Review: After Pathaan, John Abraham is once again back on the big screens with an action film. This time he is accompanied by Sharvari who is already having a great 2024 (Munjya & Maharaj). The teaser and trailer of Nikkhil Advani's Vedaa had grabbed our attention, and because of the CBFC, the movie had also made it to the headlines. Now, finally, it is all set to release tomorrow (15th August), clashing with Stree 2 and Khel Khel Mein. So, is Vedaa worth your time and money? Find out in our review below...

The movie revolves around Vedaa (Sharvari) who is from a lower caste and stays in Barmer, Rajasthan. There all the decisions are taken by Pradhan (Abhishek Banerjee) and while he tries to show that he cares about everyone, he and his family are not happy to see the lower caste people coming forward. Abhimanyu (John Abraham), court-martialed officer, comes to Barmer and starts working in a college where Vedaa is studying. Soon, a situation takes place where Vedaa's family gets into trouble and she has to run away. Abhimanyu becomes her protector, and what happens next, forms the rest of the story...

The basic concept of Vedaa is very good. It showcases about how still there's a caste system in our country and how upper caste people treat the lower caste. The first half has some scenes that are very hard-hitting, but the slow pace is a hurdle here. In the second half also the movie looks very stretched. There are long scenes that after a point will bore you. The last 30 minutes, which should have been the highlight of the movie, tests your patience.

Nikkhil Advani's narration is good in bits and parts, and the action sequences have been choreographed well. However, once again, even they are quite long. The runtime of the film is 150 minutes, but still, it feels very stretched.

Vedaa Actors' Performance

Vedaa belongs to Sharvari. She has given an excellent performance and clearly a tough contender to win Best Actress awards next year. We can clearly say that she is the saving grace of this film. John Abraham's performance is good; he speaks less, emotes with his eyes and, of course, flexes his mucles in action sequences, and we love that about him.

Abhishek Banerjee is a surprise. His villainous act will surely grab your attention. Kshitij Chauhan also leaves a mark. A special mention to veteran actor Ashish Vidyarthi, he has been given some of the best dialogues, and he performs well.

Vedaa Music

Apart from Holiyaan, no other songs leave a mark. The track Mummy Ji fails to impress, and we surely miss Nora Fatehi here. The background score is also too loud and doesn't make an impact on the film.

Vedaa Review Final Verdict

Overall, Vedaa had a very good concept, but the slow pace and the long scenes spoiled the movie and made it boring. Watch it only if you are a Sharvari or John Abraham fan!

P.S. We would have given this film 2 stars, but an extra half star just for Sharvari's fantastic act.
