Pursuing a PhD means spending a minimum of four years conducting original research and writing a dissertation. Throughout this time, PhD candidates work in close collaboration with their supervisor. A PhD is not regarded as study, but as serious research and PhD candidates in the Netherlands are often in paid employment.

Pursuing a PhD in the Netherlands

Admission and funding, why choose the netherlands for your phd.

The Netherlands has:

  • excellent graduate schools;
  • a large variety of research fields and extensive interdisciplinary collaboration;
  • world-class research: ten Dutch research universities are ranked in the top 200 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022;
  • mostly paid employment contracts for PhD candidates.

Research schools and graduate schools

All PhD candidates are part of a graduate school or research school. Research schools are partnerships between multiple research universities and research institutes, while graduate schools are organised within universities. Both provide an inspiring research environment, offering tailor-made study programmes, master classes, seminars and conferences.

A Dutch PhD is highly regarded

Once your dissertation is approved for publication, you will attend the public defence of your research and will be awarded the PhD at a ceremony steeped in tradition. A PhD from a Dutch university is highly regarded because of the high academic standards. The Netherlands has an excellent international ranking for the number of publications per researcher (2nd) and for the impact of research publication (4th).

Where are PhDs offered?

In the Netherlands, research is carried out by research universities, research institutes and companies, but only research universities can award PhD degrees. Other research institutes that work in close collaboration with a research university may also offer PhD positions.

Most PhD posts will often be advertised on job boards, such as AcademicTransfer , in scientific journals, or on notice boards at other institutions. If you see a PhD position that interests you, contact the institution directly about the application procedure.

Your own research proposal

If you have a specific research proposal of your own and cannot find a vacancy to match it, you may pitch your idea to universities or research groups that conduct research in the relevant field and are able to provide funding.

Admission criteria for PhD positions are rigorous, and potential candidates must have a solid background in the theory and methods of their field as well as a recognised master’s degree. PhD students from other countries generally choose to write their dissertation in English and will therefore need to demonstrate a good command of English idiom and grammar before the dissertation begins.

Funding your PhD position

In the Netherlands, there are generally 3 ways to fund your PhD:

  • employed by the PhD-awarding institution;
  • with a fellowship or grant awarded by a supporting body;
  • with sponsorship from your employer.

Employed by an institution The majority of PhD candidates in the Netherlands have an employment contract with the institution where they will be conducting their research.

Fellowship or grant About one sixth of PhD candidates in the Netherlands find funding in the form of a fellowship or grant, and many of these come from abroad. Once you have found a fellowship or grant, you will need to find a supervisor at a research institution willing to support you. Organisations offering fellowships and grants can be found on the EURAXESS website and at our Finances overview .

Sponsored by your employer It is sometimes possible to study for a PhD part-time while working. If you and your employer are interested in this option, you should contact the institution of your choice for more information.

Tuition fees

Some Dutch institutions charge fees for enrolment, supervision and access to laboratories and other facilities. Each research university is free to decide on how much it charges and fees do vary from one discipline to the next, depending on whether expensive equipment is required or not.

The EURAXESS website provides detailed practical information useful for researchers (including PhD candidates) coming to the Netherlands, covering immigration procedures, social security, taxation, healthcare insurance, etc. If you need an entry visa, your prospective institution will advise you on the correct procedure for your particular situation.

Doing PhD in Germany vs the Netherlands

I am planning to apply for a Ph.D. grant. I have two options, one in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and the other one in Stuttgart, Germany.

The one in Amsterdam is 38h per week. The remuneration is €2,395 to € 4,402 gross per month and a favorable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants, I am not Dutch.

The one in Stuttgart is 40h per week and the remuneration is according to (TV-L E13 level).

How much the net salary will be? I don't know how much income tax will apply in either of these countries.

I know there are a lot of other factors I need to take into consideration. If you have any suggestions or recommendations, please share them here.

Thank you so much.

  • 1 Commonly in the Netherlands, you start at 2395 and it goes up every year according to a fixed table. You should be able to get the specifics from the university, the range you give here is huge. In any case, keep living costs in mind (mainly rent and health insurance could differ a lot). –  user53923 Commented Jul 24, 2021 at 17:10
  • 2 @Wacek Unlike in the US, in the EU many universities actually take seriously the contract and labor laws, and actively step up to prevent the 60-80 hrs /week scenarios. –  Greg Commented Jul 25, 2021 at 3:31
  • 5 Considering the difference in living costs between the countries and cities, and the goal of a PhD, I do not think your main consideration should be the exact value of salary. Small things like living conditions, lab culture, can much more impactful of your overall wellbeing, and you should also consider professional / scientific value of the two projects, too. –  Greg Commented Jul 25, 2021 at 3:35
  • 2 @Greg "in the EU many universities actually take seriously". I have never been in us. I have experience from several EU universities (both "eastern" and "western") and my experience is that those who succeed (and remain in science) work for 60-80 h / week. Those who just need a PhD for a CV indeed work less. Counties that I speak of: Germany, Austria, Poland and Lithuania. Common scenario: (day N: 6pm) "we need to do the following" (day N+1 9 am) "did you do it, what are the results". Field of "chemical physics". –  user141903 Commented Jul 26, 2021 at 6:48
  • 3 @Greg some of my colleagues were funded by some EU grant that required filling in daily schedules that kept hours. Basically someone wrote an Excel macro that asked you for your vacation days and religion (protestants have different holidays than catholics), and based on that these reports were filled in. Naturally 8 hours per day and 0 on weekends. Always :) –  user141903 Commented Jul 26, 2021 at 6:59

The salary range for the Amsterdam position is almost certainly a mistake and should read €2395 to €3061. It would average out (over the 4 years and your progression through the salary range) to ~€2200 after taxes per month but there are holiday and end-of-year bonuses which push it up to ~€2400. Additionally, €500/month is going towards a pension fund. This is money you can't immediately access but obviously it still has value.

If the 30% ruling applies (one of the conditions is that you need to be under 30, have a master's degree and relocate from abroad), 30% of the income will be untaxed. As a very rough first estimate, this would net you an additional €200-400 per month (at the expense of losing out on some relatively insignificant social security benefits).

I don't know the German situation well enough to comment on that, but hopefully this gives you a rough idea of what you would earn in the Netherlands. Note that, for a proper comparsion, in the Netherlands you must have mandatory health insurance which is ~€100/month (which you could view as a kind of tax).

  • You're right, the range for Amsterdam was certainly a mistake. That range was actually for postdocs not for PhDs. thanks for correcting that. And thank you for your good answer. –  AziZ Commented Jul 25, 2021 at 6:08
  • "€500/month is going towards a pension fund. This is money you can't immediately access but obviously it still has value." - what is person leaves Netherlands permanently? Won't these 500 euro be just taken by the govenrment? –  user141903 Commented Jul 26, 2021 at 6:54
  • 1 @Wacek No. It can still be paid out if you retire when living abroad. You can also choose to immediately transfer the accumulated pension to your new pension fund if you take up employment elsewhere. –  Tom van der Zanden Commented Jul 26, 2021 at 7:59
  • @Tom van der Zanden, Yes indeed you can. But take into account that when you get it paid out you will probably have to pay taxes over it, it is not tax free money, so that reduces the value somewhat. –  user53923 Commented Jul 27, 2021 at 16:54

Quite certainly the number of hours listed will be irrelevant. It would be extremely unusual for a PhD student to be on the clock.

The salary range listed for Amsterdam is gigantic. Your net salary in Germany will depend on various personal factors, e.g. whether you are married, if so how much your spouse makes; whether you have children and what religion you are. However, in both cases the salary will ultimately be sufficient for a modest lifestyle ; and that is what matters.

The aspects you should focus on are:

  • Do you forsee that working in the research group will be pleasant and productive?
  • Do you trust that the PhD supervisor will be capable and willing to act as an effective mentor for you?
  • Is the idea of living in Amsterdam or Stuttgart respectively for several years appealing to you? Or at least, not off-putting? [If you are planning to bring anyone else along, the same question applies to them.]

Arno's user avatar

  • You are right, the range for Amsterdam was a mistake. That was for postdocs not for PhDs. –  AziZ Commented Jul 25, 2021 at 6:10
  • The number of hours listed is extremely relevant since that decides what the monthly gross is (irrespectively of what the actual hours worked are). 40 h/wk is a 100 % position. –  cbeleites Commented Jul 26, 2021 at 19:41
  • @cbeleites that may be so in germany, but in the Netherlands 38h weeks are a fulltime position (though people sometimes work 40 and get additional leave days in return) –  user53923 Commented Jul 27, 2021 at 16:48
  • @cbeleitesunhappywithSX It is relevant that both positions are fulltime. The hour-numbers don't matter. –  Arno Commented Jul 27, 2021 at 16:51
  • 1 @user53923: also 38, 39, 39.5 h/week would all be called full time position in Germany. But there are also PhD positions that are nominally 19-20 h/wk (50 % part time) or 26-ish h/wk (65 % part time). The latter positions will yield half and 65 %, respectively, of the gross wage of a full position. This percentage is the single most important variable factor in finding out how money a PhD student earns. (And those hours paid are in many cases completely independent of the hours a PhD student is expected to work on their thesis). –  cbeleites Commented Jul 27, 2021 at 19:52

A full time TV-L 13 position in Germany will give you roughly 2200€ oft net income in the first year, and it increases after 1 year, and again after 2 years. So I would guess the amount of money you will have in both Amsterdam and Stuttgart will not differ by much more than a few 100€.

From a pure money perspective, you should thus consider:

  • how much would you roughly spend in each city for rent, food etc.?
  • how far are the cities from your current home or your family and would you spend considerably more from one of the to places to travel to those?

But as @Arno already remarked, the more important things to consider are the academic surroundings in each place, the research abilities, the prospective colleagues and mentors, as well as things like local language and culture.

Sursula's user avatar

  • yeah, thanks for your answer. –  AziZ Commented Jul 25, 2021 at 6:09
  • 1 Hmm, might it be possible that you just extrapolated the information in the first half sentence from your own experience? In fact, it is not possible to determine the net income without additional information about the OP's personal situation (as pointed out in Arno's answer). –  Jochen Glueck Commented Jul 25, 2021 at 9:11
  • @JochenGlueck: it's possible to do a worst-case calculation with tax class I, no kids and high additional health insurance fees of 1.7 % etc. Everything else will lead to higher net (exluding tax class 6, but presumably the PhD position will not be accompanied by any higher paying side job). For a 100 % (40 h/wk) TVL 13-1 for BaWü I get about 2500 € net with the settings above. –  cbeleites Commented Jul 26, 2021 at 19:44

Studying For A PhD In The Netherlands: The Basics

dutch university

Dutch universities offer a great environment students looking for a PhD In The Netherlands, well-resourced labs and libraries, a forward-looking research culture, favourable financial arrangements, and international colleagues.

Only the 14 institutions in the universiteit (WO) sector offer doctorates; a hogeschool is a university of applied sciences, analogous to the old British polytechnic system. However, many hogescholen offer doctorates in collaboration with universities and industry partners: for example, the HAN Automotive Institute at Hogeschool Arnhem en Nijmegen. There are also frequently doctoral posts offered by independent research institutes, again in partnership with universities.

A PhD In The Netherlands

A Dutch PhD involves carrying out rigorous, supervised research for four full years. Most programmes are individual research-based, but professional doctorates (such as Professional Doctorates in Engineering and Medicine) are also possible.

The final output is a dissertation, which candidates must defend before a panel of academic judges, and present in a public lecture at the end of their studies (the promovendus lecture).

An MA, MPhil or MSc is usually required as a prerequisite. Like UK Masters degrees, Dutch Masters programmes normally run for one year, although some are considerably longer. Prospective PhD students need to submit their credentials for vetting to the government agency Nuffic (see Resources).

Some programmes require or offer admission via examination. These procedures differ from university to university and programme to programme; details are often quite hard to find! Typically at least some of the exams are in Dutch only (even for programmes taught and examined in English…)

Language and living.

The Dutch language is not needed for all PhD programmes, but is a prerequisite for many and always an asset. Many universities require students to pass the Nederlands Tweede Taal (NT2) exam to prove their proficiency. The exam is managed by DUO (see Resources); classes are available through universities or privately.

EU students do not require a student visa, but may need to have certain paperwork certified and/or translated (for example, your birth certificate) and submit this to receive permission to remain in the Netherlands while studying.

All students are required to show proof of private health insurance and must register their address with the city government (gemeente) after moving. Watch out: in most major Dutch cities housing shortages have led to illegal rentals. If a listing says you cannot register (inschrijven), it is illegal. The university can help you find affordable, legal housing.

There are tax advantages for Dutch PhD researchers recruited from outside the Netherlands (see Resources: the “30 per cent rule” can save you a substantial sum over the course of your working life in the Netherlands, so don’t miss out by accident).

Finding a PhD In The Netherlands.

Typically, applying for a PhD place in the Netherlands is not unlike applying for a job—and most places do include a salary. Typically places are listed on the central register for academic posts, Academic Transfer (see Resources).

It is also possible to make a direct approach to an academic who works in your desired research area. However, unless your approach involves asking to join an existing or proposed funded project, you may not be offered research funding. That said, PhD costs for self-funded students are lower in the Netherlands than in some other countries, so this route may appeal to some.

Academic Transfer

Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) – DUO administers student funding and state exams, including the NT2 Dutch language exam.

  • Living in the Netherlands – A Guide for PhD Students

Written by Chris Banyard

Dutch universities are welcoming and prestigious institutions, perfect for international students looking to study a PhD . The Netherlands offers a relaxing lifestyle, unique attractions and rich heritage for you to explore and perhaps even research during your doctorate.

This guide provides useful information for students thinking of moving to the Netherlands for doctoral study. It covers accommodation options, living costs, work permits, transport and banking.

On this page

Student life.

The Netherlands is a popular destination for PhD students, and has a strong international student population. There’s plenty to discover during a Dutch doctorate as you explore the country’s café culture, canals and excellent nightlife.

Culture and tourism

As one of the most progressive and liberal countries in the world, the relaxed and welcoming culture of the Netherlands is an attractive proposition for international students. You may like to visit the museums, galleries and theatres celebrating the arts and music of the Dutch Golden Age, with work from the likes of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and van Gogh. The Netherlands’ historic and cosmopolitan cities prove popular with visitors, with Amsterdam in particular receiving many tourists (and not all are on hen parties or stag dos!).

Sport and leisure

Perhaps the best way to explore the Netherlands and experience Dutch cities, lowland countryside, coast, windmills, and tulip fields is by bike. Cycling is huge in the Netherlands and is perhaps the nation’s favourite pastime. Football is also popular, and many of the world’s best players and teams hail from the country. There are also lots of Dutch festivals to experience throughout the year, including the famous Scheveningen New Year’s Dive, Amsterdam Light Festival, Tulip Festival, and King’s Day.

Food and drink

As you’d expect from the nation that turned carrots orange (Google it), agriculture, seasonal foods and sustainability are key parts of Dutch cuisine. With fresh fish from the North Sea, Limburg asparagus, Texel lamb, and seasonal fruit from North Brabant (and not forgetting the famous array of Dutch cheeses like Gouda and Edam). You can experience all of this cuisine at the world-renowned restaurants of the Veluwe region. The Netherlands also produces the internationally-distributed Heineken, Grolsch and Amstel beers.

Find a PhD in the Netherlands

Ready to start browsing some current PhD opportunities in the Netherlands ? Alternatively, you can look at our other guides to PhD study abroad .

Accommodation

Most housing in the Netherlands is privately rented – there is not a strong tradition of university-managed accommodation (although it may be available in rare circumstances).

Due to this, and the high population density of the nation, you may find it more challenging to find student accommodation in the Netherlands. However, your university’s international office will be able to provide assistance in your search for housing.

Accommodation types

Types of available student accommodation in the Netherlands include:

  • Private renting – most students will live in a privately-rented shared student flat or apartment
  • University accommodation – similar to UK halls of residence, this form of accommodation is very limited and only available at some universities

Accommodation costs

The cost of accommodation in the Netherlands is marginally higher than in the UK. You can expect to pay around €400-600 per month for rented housing (and more if you have university housing). This can vary depending on your city of residence, and the size / location of your accommodation.

Living costs

The overall cost of living for a PhD student in the Netherlands is somewhat higher than in the UK, but similar to neighbouring countries of Western Europe.

You can expect to pay around €900 per month in addition to your rent for general living costs.

Prices in the Netherlands

The following table gives an indication of prices for some common expenses during a PhD in the Netherlands:

Student Cost of Living in the Netherlands - 2024
€15.00
€12.00
€77.69
€210.09
.

Working during your PhD

Most PhD students in the Netherlands are employed by their universities, and therefore there may not be much scope for additional work. Nonetheless, in some cases you may wish to undertake additional employment.

EU / EEA / Swiss students are free to work alongside PhD studies without restrictions. Other international students will require a work permit from the UWV , and are permitted to work a maximum of 16 hours per week and full-time during the summer.

All students studying in the Netherlands who are employed are required to have basic health insurance, a social security number (BSN) and pay Dutch income tax.

Employment contracts with your university

Some structured PhD programmes in the Netherlands include an internship component as part of your studies – in these cases, you do not require the aforementioned documentation (although there will need to be a signed internship agreement).

Additionally, most students are employed by their university as a PhD researcher. Therefore, you may be required to comply with the work-related documentation and procedures. Your university’s international office will be able to provide more assistance with this.

The currency of the Netherlands is the Euro (€ or EUR). As part of the EU, this is the same currency used by all neighbouring countries making movement around Europe easier.

There are several banks to choose from in the Netherlands, some of which are digital or mobile specific, and most will provide student accounts for international PhD students.

To set up a bank account, you will normally need to visit your desired branch in person. You are usually required to bring the following:

  • your BSN (social security) number
  • a valid passport or identity card
  • proof of Dutch address (e.g. a contract or bill)
  • a valid residency permit (if you are a non-EU / EEA / Swiss student)

For more information about banking in the Netherlands, you should contact your university’s international office.

Getting around in the Netherlands is made easy by the country’s developed and widespread public transport networks. These travel options are ideal for PhD students, and many will offer discounts for holders of the Dutch OV-chipkaart travel card.

Rail travel

With an extensive, comfortable and quick rail network connecting Dutch cities to each other, and to other major cities of Europe, the Netherlands’ train network is ideal for most long-distance journeys.

The major airport in the Netherlands is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, but the nation has four other airports based at the other major cities. Additionally, these airports are situated with easy access from their nearby towns and cities.

Inner-city travel

The Netherlands is famous for its bikes and its cyclists. You will find most people travel around in this way, making use of the extensive networks of cycling lanes and cycle-friendly traffic. And, if two-wheels aren’t for you, most cities have handy bus networks. The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam also operate tram services (the latter two cities also have a city-wide metro services).

What to do after your Phd? Netherlands vs elsewhere

phd netherlands reddit

After ‘ deciding whether to work in academics or in industry ’, a PhD will face the decision of whether to look for work locally (in the Netherlands) or elsewhere. Of course, based on the opportunities available, this decision can be amended but there are some pros and cons of sticking to the Netherlands versus going somewhere else. As an international PhD I’ll share my perspective with you today.

Working in the Netherlands

Stay in the Netherlands after finalising your PhD.

  • The Netherlands is a developed Western European country with many commercial and innovative opportunities for a PhD to have a flourishing career. It has a great infrastructure and a society geared towards good working conditions for any international PhD
  • In case of academics, the Netherlands has campuses of some of the best and well renowned universities of the entire world
  • In case of private sector, a lot of local and multinational companies have offices in the Netherlands
  • The pay scale for research work in the Netherlands lies in the top 10% of the world regardless of whether you go the academic or the industrial track
  • The geography and the climate of the Netherlands along with its culture and society is not harsh and very favourable to settle into for long term growth and success. The visa and residence laws for immigration are clear and not too harsh compared to some other western countries
  • Except for entry level academic jobs such as postdoc, academic and private sector jobs might require a working knowledge of Dutch and sometimes other European languages
  • Netherlands is a relatively small country with a dense population of educated people which can make competition for jobs quite hard
  • If you decide to settle in the Netherlands, you have to be able to integrate in its society to thrive and live meaningfully
  • The cost and standard of living in the Netherlands (and most of the Western EU) is very high

Work elsewhere

Move out of the Netherlands after finalising your PhD.

  • If you are not beholden to working in the Netherlands, the opportunities that you can avail worldwide are much more

What PhD graduates should know about the 30 percent ruling

What PhD graduates should know about the 30 percent ruling

De Vreede Advocaten is a young and dynamic law firm specialised in immigration and international employment law for both businesses and individuals.

The Netherlands has a favourable tax ruling for employees hired from abroad called the 30 percent ruling. If certain conditions are met, the employee may receive 30 percent of their salary tax-free.

One of the most important conditions, apart from the salary level, is that the employee is hired from abroad.

The 30 percent ruling and PhD students

Often this condition leads to discussions with the Dutch tax authorities, particularly in cases where a student has come to the Netherlands to study and is, subsequently, hired by a local Dutch employer.

The Dutch tax authorities often take the position of interpreting that the student or employee does not qualify because they were already in the country when they were hired.

However, for PhD students who completed their PhD in the Netherlands, the requirement of being recruited from abroad does not have to be met if they are hired within one year of completing their studies.

A PhD example in the Netherlands

Before coming to the Netherlands to complete his PhD, Donald was living in the USA. He came to the Netherlands in January 2016 and finished his PhD in March 2017.

After finishing his PhD, he started looking for a job in the Netherlands, and managed to finally find one in January 2018.

Although he has been living in the Netherlands for two years he was still able to obtain the 30 percent ruling for the full 8-year period providing, of course, that he met the other criteria required for the ruling.

Other students do not benefit

Other students cannot benefit from this exception to the rule. In their situation, it depends whether or not the student is considered a Dutch resident during their studies.

Whether or not a person is regarded as a tax resident of the Netherlands depends on all facts and their circumstances.

If the student came to the Netherlands for their studies only and the center of their social and economic life was outside the Netherlands during the study, then they may not be considered Dutch resident.

In such a situation, they may be eligible for the 30 percent ruling if they meet the other requirements.

For these students, it is therefore important to carefully determine their personal situation in order to qualify for the 30 percent ruling.

Your situation determines your status

Mary, who came from India to study at a business school in the Netherlands, is an example of how ones situation can determine whether one qualifies for the 30 percent ruling.

Upon finding a place to stay, so she could continue her PhD, Mary registered at the municipality, which for the Dutch tax authorities automatically meant that she became a tax resident of the Netherlands.

She was only allowed to study in the Netherlands on a student visa, which was granted for one year. After that year, she obtained her diploma and went back to India for a duration of six weeks over the Christmas holidays.

In that 6-week period, she found a job in the Netherlands and applied for the 30 percent ruling. Of course, the tax authorities denied the request arguing that she was not hired from abroad.

Based on the facts and circumstances of this particular case, for example, the fact that she still had close connections, both financial and personal, to India, and her initial intention was to stay in the Netherlands temporarily, De Vreede was able to convince the tax authorities that she was in fact hired form abroad.

Legally speaking, the intention would only change from the moment she signed an employment contract with the Dutch employer to indicate that she had come to work and live in the Netherlands, thus becoming a resident.

De Vreede Advocaten  is happy to answer any 30 percent ruling queries you may have.

PhD, Postdoc, and Professor Salaries in the Netherlands

Salaries at Dutch universities are set at the national level and listed in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). An academic’s place on the salary scale   is determined by their position, qualifications, and experience. The salaries listed in this article are pre-tax. Dutch salaries are supplemented by an 8% holiday allowance (paid in May or June) and an 8.3% end-of-year allowance (paid in December). Income tax is high—either 36.5% or 52%—however foreign academics are often eligible for the 30% scheme which allows them to receive the first 30% of their salary tax-free.

Promovendus

A PhD student in the Netherlands is called a promovendus . A Dutch PhD usually takes four years to complete. As PhD candidates are seen as employees rather than students and usually hold the position of Assistant-in-Opleiding (AiO) or Onderzoeker-in-Opleiding (OiO).

A PhD student earns €2,448 to €3,128 per month.

After earning their PhD, many researchers go on to a postdoc often at another university or in another country. A postdoc is a continuation of the researcher’s training that allows them to further specialize in a particular field and learn new skills and techniques. A Dutch postdoc lasts two years.

The salary range for a postdoc is €3,821 to €5,230 per month ( scale 11 ).

Universitair docent

This position is equivalent to the rank of assistant professor and is the first permanent academic position. The initial contract is often for four years at which point the academic is evaluated and their position may become permanent. If the position becomes permanent, it is not uncommon to stay in this position until retirement.

Tenure-track universitair docent positions were initially introduced due to many Dutch academic jobs being temporary and job security being perceived very low. A more experienced candidate with the potential to become a universitair hoofddocent can become a tenure-track universitair docent . After four to six years their performance is evaluated and those who have published and received major grants are promoted to universitair hoofddocent .

The salary scales for a universitair docent ranges from €3,821 to €5,943 per month ( scale 11 and 12 ) depending on qualifications and experience level.

Universitair hoofddocent

A universitair hoofddocent is equivalent in rank to an associate professor. Traditionally to become a universitair hoofddocen t, a universitair docent had to apply for a vacant position. However it is now possible to be promoted to this position based on performance. This is a permanent position and it is not uncommon to remain a universitair hoofddocent until retirement.

The salary scales for a universitair hoofddocent ranges from €5,294 to €7,097 per month ( scale 13 and 14 ) depending on qualifications and experience level.

A hoogleraar is equivalent to a full professor and is at the top of the Dutch professorial hierarchy. They have substantial research accomplishments that have established them as an international or national leader in their field. The position is similar to that of a department chair in that a hoogleraar supervises all the other professors in their department or group. They are also the only ones who can supervise PhD dissertations. Unlike the American tenure system, there is no automatic promotion to hoogleraar . To become one, a universitair hoofddocent has to apply for a vacant position.

The salary scales for a hoogleraar ranges from €5,864 to €10,309 per month ( scale H2 and H1 ) depending on qualifications and experience level.

PhD in Netherlands – Your Complete Guide

The Netherlands is one of the prestigious destinations for all international students for higher education. It has some of the well-known and top-ranked universities in Europe. It is a country that has developed rich traditions of artistic, cultural, and scientific achievement. The country’s multicultural and multilingual population also means that most of its doctoral programmes are taught in English.Like in the UK, PhD in Netherlands is carried out on a specific topic and documented in a thesis that presents the student’s results and conclusions. In most countries, a doctoral candidate is considered a student who studies and does research. But in the Netherlands, PhD candidates are traditionally researchers employed by a university to complete a dissertation or thesis. Since these jobs allow you to complete your PhD degree while earning a salary and without paying tuition fees, they are highly competitive. Once you are hired, your research will be conducted on the topic specified in the vacancy and in conjunction with a faculty, research institute or research school. Most candidates complete their PhD within four years. So, this means you have social security, build up retirement funds, pay taxes, and are expected to perform like an employee, fulfilling certain functioning criteria.

All PhD candidates are part of a graduate school or research school. Research schools are partnerships between multiple research universities and research institutes, while graduate schools are organised within universities. Both provide an inspiring research environment, offering tailor-made study programmes, master classes, seminars and conferences.

PhD Supervision in Netherlands

PhD students have a supervisor, who is an expert academic university professor, responsible for overseeing your research and thesis writing. They will also need to approve your final thesis for submission.

Depending on the specific structure and requirements of your doctoral programme, this supervision may involve regular progress checks and formal review points. You may also have a co-supervisor.

Length of PhD in Netherlands

PhD in Netherlands generally lasts for a minimum of four years. This is partly due to the employment status as a doctoral researcher and the additional teaching and administrative responsibilities that this entails.

Doctoral researchers that are not formally associated with a university (i.e., external doctoral candidates) may take longer to complete their studies.

Cost of PhD in Netherlands

Most PhD students in the Netherlands are considered  university employees  and therefore receive a salary to fund their research. Therefore, there are  no traditional tuition fees  for doctoral candidates or doctoral fellows.  However, there are other types of doctoral candidates that may not be considered university employees. These are:

  • contract doctoral research associates  have their research sponsored by an external source such as a scholarship or external employer
  • external doctoral candidates  are self-funded and work on their PhD research in their free time

Scholarships/ Funding for PhD in Netherlands

In Netherlands, there are generally 3 ways to fund PhD studies:

  • employed by the PhD-awarding institution;
  • with a fellowship or grant awarded by a supporting body;
  • with sponsorship from the employer.

Employed by an institution The majority of PhD candidates in the Netherlands have an employment contract with the institution where they will be conducting their research.

Fellowship or grant About one-sixth of PhD candidates in the Netherlands find funding in the form of a fellowship or grant, and many of these come from abroad. Once you have found a fellowship or grant, you will need to find a supervisor at a research institution willing to support you. Organisations offering fellowships and grants can be found on the EURAXESS website and at our Finances overview.

Sponsored by your employer It is sometimes possible to study for a PhD part-time while working. If you and your employer are interested in this option, you should contact the institution of your choice for more information.

Application Process for PhD in Netherlands

Admission for a Ph.D. programme in Netherlands involves various steps which are discussed below:

  • Finding a supervisor: the PhD programme involves one-on-one interaction with the supervisor and the college or university may not assign a faculty for your guidance. You should make sure that you find a guide in your area of study from the college/ university that you want to apply for.
  • Once the supervisor agrees to act as your guide and to support your application for the School’s Ph.D. programme, you will be required to submit an official application to the university.
  • You will be asked to provide your contact details, curriculum vitae and supporting documents including the research proposal, personal statement, transcript and references.
  • Prepare a Research Proposal : This holds the key in the application process for the Ph.D. programme. Normally a proposal should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words. The proposal should explain your area of study, the aim of your research and your hypothesis.
  • Personal statement:  The most important challenge is to put down in words the reason for pursuing the particular programme, what attracts you to the subject area and how your studies or work experience has influenced you to take up PhD studies. It is a very important document and holds a lot of value in eyes of the admission committee.
  • References : All programmes will ask for referees who can provide details about your academic abilities and motivation. In some cases, there will be specific referee forms available on the school site. And in other cases, a referee may be asked to provide a letter of reference in his/her own words.

Post-Study Work Visa in Netherlands

Graduates of higher education or university studies (bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degrees) can apply for a  Dutch orientation year visa  within three years of graduating. This gives you one year to look for employment, during which time you can work without any restrictions or the need for an employer to hold a work permit for you.

Family visa norms in Netherlands

This depends on the conditions of the residence permit held by your partner in the Netherlands. The back of your own residence permit will tell you if you are allowed to work in the Netherlands, and if so, under what conditions.

Broadly speaking (but not always – see below), as a non-EEA spouse/partner of a person based in the Netherlands, you will be given the same rights to work as your partner.

If your partner is a Dutch citizen, whether, by birth or acquisition, the back of your residence permit should state the words ‘ arbeid vrij toegestaan. TWV niet vereist ’, which means “work freely allowed. TWV not required”. TWV stands for ‘ tewerkstellingsvergunning’,   which means work permit.

If your partner in the Netherlands is not a Dutch citizen, but they have a residence permit, the Dutch immigration service will give you the same work rights as your partner.

If your partner in the Netherlands requires a TWV to work, then you will also need a TWV to seek employment.

If your partner in the Netherlands is not permitted to work, then you will also not be able to work.

Can I work in Netherlands part-time during my studies?

Most PhD students in the Netherlands are employed by their universities, and therefore there may not be much scope for additional work. Nonetheless, in some cases, you may wish to undertake additional employment.

EU / EEA / Swiss students are free to work alongside PhD studies without restrictions. Other international students will require a work permit from the UWV (which is generally applied by the employer and not the student) and are permitted to work a maximum of 16 hours per week and full-time during the summer.

Dimitris Bertsimas PhD ’88 has been appointed vice provost for open learning at MIT, effective Sept. 1. In this role, Bertsimas, who is the Boeing Leaders for Global Operations Professor of Management at MIT, will work with partners across the Institute to transform teaching and learning on and off MIT’s campus.

Provost Cynthia Barnhart announced Bertsimas’s appointment in an email to the MIT community today.

“As the vice provost for open learning, Dimitris will work with faculty and staff across MIT to shape Open Learning’s next chapter,” Barnhart wrote. “Dimitris will be a member of my leadership team as well as Academic Council, and he will work closely with the school and college deans, faculty, and staff to advance research into the science of learning with the goal of innovating, studying, and scaling up digital technologies on campus and for the benefit of the world.”

She added, “I am thrilled that Dimitris has agreed to serve the Institute in this capacity.”

Bertsimas comes to MIT Open Learning from the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he is associate dean for the master of business analytics program and a professor of operations research. Bertsimas has been a faculty member at the Institute since 1988, after completing his PhD in operations research and applied mathematics from MIT. He works in the areas of optimization and machine learning and their applications, including in health care and medicine. Bertsimas developed and launched the MBA program at MIT and has served as its inaugural faculty director since 2013. The program has been rated No. 1 in analytics in the world every year since its inception. Passionate about teaching, research, and entrepreneurship, Bertsimas is no stranger to MIT Open Learning. He developed 15.071 (The Analytics Edge), available on MITx, which has attracted hundreds of thousands of learners since its launch in 2013.

In his new role, Bertsimas will oversee MIT Open Learning’s product offerings — including OpenCourseWare, MITx courses, MicroMasters programs, xPRO courses, MIT Horizon, Jameel World Education Lab, MIT pK-12, and others — as well as Open Learning’s infrastructure, finances, and operations.

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead Open Learning and to advance its mission,” says Bertsimas. “I have particular interest in introducing students of all ages, from all backgrounds — science, engineering, management, architecture/planning, law, medicine, the social sciences, the humanities, and the arts — to the art of the feasible in AI and its potential to revolutionize fields.”

Bertsimas is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a recipient of various research and teaching awards, including the John von Neumann Theory Prize from INFORMS. He views MIT Open Learning as central to the Institute’s mission.

“OpenCourseWare is arguably the most significant accomplishment of MIT in the arena of open learning,” says Bertsimas, who has co-authored seven graduate-level books and co-founded 10 analytics companies. “MIT led the way in educating millions of people around the world by having access to MIT classes. I aspire for Open Learning to equal and possibly surpass the impact of OpenCourseWare in the new era of AI.”

Bertsimas succeeds Eric Grimson PhD ’80, who served as interim vice president for open learning for the past two years. Grimson, the Bernard M. Gordon Professor of Medical Engineering and professor of computer science and engineering, will continue to serve the Institute as chancellor for academic advancement.

Grimson’s connection to Open Learning dates back to 2012 when he co-taught two of the earliest courses available on MITx , which remain among the world’s most popular online courses: 6.00.1x (Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python) and 6.00.2x (Introduction to Computational Thinking and Data Science).

In July 2022, Grimson was named interim vice president for open learning. During his time at the helm of MIT Open Learning, Grimson expanded outreach to the Institute’s school councils and college, providing comprehensive information on opportunities for faculty members to use Open Learning resources. He advanced research into artificial intelligence’s impact on education, including experiments in creating AI-based tutors for introductory online courses. Grimson oversaw the expansion of MITx Online , a platform that serves as an alternative to edX for delivery of MITx ’s digital courses, as well as the development of a soon-to-be-launched portal that will unify access to all MIT online educational content for learners worldwide.

“When former MIT President Rafael Reif launched Open Learning, his stated goals were to educate millions of learners around the world, to change how we teach on campus, and to learn about learning and use that knowledge to guide our innovations in teaching,” Grimson says. “I share that vision, and I have been delighted to be part of Open Learning as it strives to revolutionize teaching and learning, both on campus and off. Seeing the incredible impact that MIT has globally in providing easy access to high-quality educational experiences is one of the great pleasures from being part of MIT.”

Bertsimas’s appointment follows an internal search launched in January. The search advisory group was chaired by Duane Boning, the Clarence J. LeBel Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. As part of its work, the advisory group sought input from current and former leaders of Open Learning, members of the Open Learning faculty advisory committees, MIT deans, Open Learning staff, and leaders of online learning initiatives at other universities.

“With his exceptional background and deep commitment to MIT, Dimitris is a leader who will get big things done on behalf of Open Learning and all of MIT, in this moment of time when learning technologies are fast evolving and provide enormous opportunities for educational impact," Boning says.

Sports | Breaking news: B-boys and B-girls spin into — and promptly out of — Olympic orbit

phd netherlands reddit

Baron Pierre de Coubertin was spinning in his grave.

The founder of the modern Olympics couldn’t have imagined what transpired Friday at Place de la Concorde in his beloved Paris. The temporary 3×3 basketball stadium was converted to a performance venue for breaking, the newest sport on the Summer Games program, with a circular dance floor, two rapping emcees, tables with nine judges and, above them, two DJs spinning hip-hop tunes.

There were hyped, boxing-like introductions for the “battles,” as head-to-head breaking competitions are called. The B-girls went by nicknames — Logistx, Syssy, Anti, Raygun, Nicka, 671 — that also appear atop their official Olympic bios. (The 18-year-old Chinese woman who won the bronze medal is listed on the media information system as merely 671, and you have dig deep into her bio to learn her “passport name” is Liu Qingyi.)

They taunted each other before and during battles, then hugged afterward.

U.S. B-girl Sunny was facing India, who is actually from the Netherlands, and pretended to yank off her head, then shot put it into the stands. And then lost 18-0.

India from the Netherlands didn’t seem too perturbed. “It was a good photo moment,” she said later.

Breaking, originally called breakdancing, was invented in the 1970s in New York City’s South Bronx and popularized in the 1980s, with dancers performing various moves while spinning on the ground. It was added to the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Argentina, then to the full Summer Games by Paris organizers with the blessing of the International Olympic Committee.

“I love and I appreciate the work that everyone has done, and the compromise that’s happened,” said 21-year-old Logistx, who grew up in Chula Vista as Logan Edra. “Throughout the journey, it’s gotten so much better. The (Olympic) qualifiers in the beginning, I did not enjoy at all. There was just no vibe when I went to those qualifiers, but it got so much better.

“It’s been a messy process, a roller coaster up and down. I’m just so happy what everyone fought for in this journey. I felt like the culture pulled through.”

United States Logan Edra, known as B-Girl Logistx, competes during the Round Robin Battle at the breaking competition at La Concorde Urban Park at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, in Paris, France. (AP Photo/Abbie Parr)

There are B-girl and B-boy competitions here, with 16 athletes each. You have three round-robin battles, followed by single-elimination quarterfinals, semifinals and final. Battles have two rounds, lasting only a few minutes. Breakers are judged on technique, variety, execution, musical interpretation and originality. Get five of the nine judges’ votes, and you win the round.

You don’t know the music before the DJ drops the beat. If you don’t like it, you pretend it’s exactly what you hoped for.

“It happens a lot,” Kate of Ukraine admitted. “You have to fake the fun. If you know the rhythm, you’re like, ‘Yes, finally.’ ”

This was breaking’s Olympic debut … and its farewell. The Los Angeles organizing committee for the 2028 Olympics opted against including it. And the 2032 Games are in Brisbane, Australia, where breaking is not widely popular.

“It’s such a big opportunity and big platform, and I’m just happy that we’re here,” Edra said. “I’m really sad that it’s not in LA28, but I feel like we’re beyond it, you know what I mean? … Not everyone wants to do the traditional sports. I’m not going to say that’s for a certain type of person, but I will say hip-hop is something special and something that the world needs, that kids need.”

United States Logan Edra, known as B-Girl Logistx, left, and France's Sya Dembele, known as B-Girl Syssy, compete during the Round Robin Battle at the breaking competition at La Concorde Urban Park at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, in Paris, France. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin)

The 5-foot-1 Edra won her first battle 2-0 against Raygun of Australia, lost 2-0 against eventual silver medalist Nicka of Lithuania and then tied France’s Syssy 1-1. Only two advance from each round-robin group to the quarterfinals, and Syssy narrowly edged Edra for the second spot.

She originally planned to represent the Philippines to honor her heritage but was sidetracked by “political drama” and joined Team USA.

“I will say this confidently,” Edra said. “I still feel I’m the best B-girl in U.S. It’s no disrespect to anyone else. I’m just being very honest and truthful with myself. If someone wants to talk (smack), go ahead. Say it to my face.”

Edra will be fine without the Olympics. She is a professional hip-hop dancer with sponsorships from Red Bull and Nike, as well as an instructor at a dance studio in Miami.

But will breaking survive?

“It was disappointing it was decided that it wasn’t going to be in LA, particularly before we’d even had a chance to show it,” said Australia’s Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, a 36-year-old lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney who has a PhD in cultural studies. “That was possibly a little premature. I wonder if they’re kicking themselves now, particularly because they have some great American breakers.

“It was disappointing, but it’s not the end for breaking. The breaking culture is so strong. We’ve got competitions outside of this. We’ll just keep on going.”

The lingering question, of course, is whether it qualifies as sport. Whether the gold awarded to Japan’s Ami on Friday tarnishes those by athletes in traditional Olympic events.

“What is an Olympics sport?” Gunn said. “It’s so broad here. What are the similarities between (equestrian) dressage and artistic swimming and the 100-meter sprint and the pentathlon? Breaking is clearly athletic, it clearly requires a whole level of dedication across a whole number of aspects.

“I feel like it meets that criteria. And it’s really bringing a new level of excitement.”

  1. Doing a phd in the Netherlands : r/StudyInTheNetherlands

You could also try to get an (summer) internship or do an exchange semester at one of those universities. Try to work a little with the professors who will do the selection of the PhD candidates. This will also give you a chance to get to learn the university and their research before committing to them. 4.

  2. To get PhD in The Netherlands in your 30s? : r ...

In the Netherlands, the most common way of doing a PhD is essentially through a job application, where the funding comes from the university (including your pay). It basically comes down to looking for job openings for PhD positions (usually part of a specific research project) and applying just like with any other kind of job opening.

  3. PhD in Netherlands : r/Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the best countries to do a PhD in. You're basically a civil servant, so your salary is guaranteed (unlike some countries, namely mine, who require PhDs to jump through a ton of hoops to get a stipend that's definitely not enough money and can disappear halfway through the work). The money is not great, but not terrible.

  4. PhD Study in the Netherlands

The Dutch academic year runs from September to August. The application deadline for most study programmes is 1 May. However, because PhD programmes are less dependent on coursework and exams, the application deadlines are usually flexible. You should check the application for your chosen course with your university.

  5. PhD Funding in the Netherlands
