Power Electronics (PE)

Power electronics is nowadays found in almost every system where electricity is used for computing, communication, renewable energy harvesting and transportation. It is a key technology for improving energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

Many of our projects involve integrating power electronic converters in large energy systems or microgrids, dealing with modelling and optimizing the interaction between the existing components; such as batteries, solar cells, hydrogen, electrical machines and electromechanical actuators. Working as an engineer in real life you will often have to solve problems related to  power quality, electromagnetic compatibility and  overheating  while tuning the system for best performance.

Our research focuses is on battery electronics, conducted and radiated electromagnetic interference, smart energy system integration, and power electronic packaging as well as on physical layer of communication systems. One special theme of the program is small solar systems with battery storage to provide off-grid electric services to 3 billion people living in energy poverty. It is a challenging research field because it not only requires innovative and reliable technology, but the solutions need to be sustainable from a socio-economical point of view.

Electrical engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the generation, distribution, and use of electricity. Power systems is a specific branch of Electrical Engineering that studies these topics. The Master of Engineering in Power Systems program delves into the subject in depth. We’ll talk about the Top 20 Power System Projects for Mtech Students here:

01. Analysis of distributed demand flow in the power grid

02. Using a Phasor Measurement Unit to monitor the power system

03. Power system harmonic reduction

The harmonics are responsible to alter the output parameter. If more harmonics are present in the circuit then the circuit will not produce the desired output. Harmonics are present in both ac and dc supply. The harmonics are nothing but an unwanted signal that will change the output signal.

05. The impact of vehicle-to-grid technology on electricity quality

When an electric vehicle is linked to the grid, it has a direct impact on the voltage, current, and power factor. Harmonics are injected into the grid via a power electronics converter.

The car to grid approach for peak load control is another project field that we may add to the list of power system projects. Electric vehicles will become more prevalent soon. To charge the battery, they connect to the electrical grid. The bidirectional charger of an electric car linked to the grid would assist in reducing peak-hour power usage.

Micro generators generate electricity from a variety of sources and have a great potential for grid connection. Distributed generation refers to the generation of energy at or near the load center itself.

Due to the development of solar, wind, biogas, and other kinds of energy production, the traditional technique of generating power at a place and transmitting it to the demand is progressively changing.

10. A resonant control scheme with two degrees of freedom for voltage sag compensation in dynamic voltage restorers

Two degrees of freedom (2DOF) control system for voltage compensation in a dynamic voltage restorer is shown in this research (DVR). It starts with a model of the DVR power circuit, which serves as the foundation for the control design process.

For load voltage control, a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is employed, and its effectiveness is largely determined by the feeder impedance and its type (resistive, inductive, stiff, non-stiff). However, there isn’t well-defined research for assessing DSTATCOM voltage regulation performance about network factors.

12. Improving power quality in distribution networks with DSTATCOM and a battery energy storage system

The necessity of attaining a low distortion and high-quality current waveform has grown as the grid-connected three-phase inverters have progressed. This paper discusses how to use a Proportional Resonance (PR) controller to reduce current ripple in a three-phase grid-connected inverter.

The number of grid-connected three-phase inverter systems connected to the distribution network has increased dramatically in recent years. As a result, high-quality, low-harmonic distortion power and grid current injection are critical.

The advancement of power electronics technology has created several opportunities for renewable energy grid integration. For this, a pulse width modulated voltage source inverter is commonly employed. Grid integrated inverter control techniques play a critical role in reducing harmonics and improving power quality in the system.

This research applies the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) approach of a non-electrical input-based artificial neural network (ANN) to a solar-powered water pumping system employing a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. The goal is to use a neural network to simulate a stepsize independent MPPT for a water pumping application.

Course content

The research topic will be a problem related to wind energy in the field of electric power engineering. The course content varies depending on the selected research problem.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: After completing the Master thesis the candidate will have: • Extensive knowledge of theory, methods, techniques and tools relevant to address the research problem. Skills: After completing the Master thesis the candidate will: • Have developed independent research skills. • Be able to conduct a comprehensive literature review/survey. • be able to formulate and address a precise research problem. • Be able to collect and analyse data from literature/experiments/other relevant sources. • Be able to document theoretical comprehension of the methods and techniques employed to address the research problem. • Be able to critically analyse, reflect upon, and justify the obtained results. • Be able to assimilate previous domain knowledge with knowledge gained from the literature study and the results of own investigations. • have effective technical report writing skills. General competence: After completing the Master thesis the candidate will • Be able to communicate the research problem and its results with specialists as well as the general public. • Have developed applied project management skills, i.e., define and execute a project plan with milestones, intermediate deliverables, status reports, etc. • Have the skill to build scientific temperament in the acquisition of knowledge through research work. • Have obtained awareness of integrity and ethics in research work. - Be able to contribute to innovation and management of innovation.

Learning methods and activities

Independent/collaborative project work with guidance. Regular meetings with supervisor(s). There will one superviser from each insitution, TU Delft and NTNU. After submitting the thesis, the student will give an oral defense of the thesis according to TU Delft requirements.

Further on evaluation

Assessment is based on the submitted thesis and the oral defense. The grade is decided by both institutions together. Before submitting the thesis, the student must obtain clearance confirming that both TU Delft and NTNU accept the thesis for submission.

Admission to a programme of study is required: Wind Energy (MSWIND)

Completed all courses in the European Wind Energy Master, study track Electric Power Systems.
