Context.  One of the most striking features of the site is its setting. The site is situated between the gigantic Sahyadri mountain range, the mesmerizing waters of the Gautami Godavari dam, and a mosaic of multi-toned farmlands, sporadic trees, cattle, cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats,s and so on.

The region has a hot and dry climate, especially during summers, but enjoys pleasant monsoons and winter conditions. The first intention of the project was to design spaces that responded to this setting. Most of the spaces are designed to create shade with minimum walls to allow maximum natural light and ventilation. All the buildings are perforated with courtyards and green pockets making the project breathable and decreasing the ambient temperature and adding the necessary moisture required in a hot and dry climate.

Materiality.  The second intention of the project was to understand and incorporate building practices from the Beze village and surrounding settlements. Typically, houses here have a stone plinth, timber framework, brick or mud walls and clay pot tiles for roofing. Construction activities, like most other activities are seen as a cooperative set of activities and form of mutual exchange of skills, labour and resources. For instance, a mason builds a house for a farmer who in turn pays him back in grains or by offering other skills. To that extent, the project is designed with three materials: Basalt Stone, Timber frame and pot-tile roof. Since the project is in a remote location, it helped to employ and collaborate with the local craftsmen who have a long lineage of working with these materials. Concrete and steel are consciously kept to a minimum in the project. All materials have been sourced locally (within 20 to 50 km), reducing the embodied energy.

Stone : The stone work on the site was mainly carried by the Wadari community. The Wadari caste, especially in the rural economy, are a community of expert stonemasons particularly settled in Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka belt of India. Basalt stone, available in plenty in the region, is hand-quarried, chiseled and fitted on site by the stonemasons. Most of the project is made with Basalt -load-bearing walls, steps, courtyards, landscape etc. This is done to deliberately create a monolithic character for the building, like a solid stone mould sitting gently on the landscape.

Viveda Wellness Retreat / a for architecture - Exterior Photography

Wood : There are two kinds of timber that are used in this project: 1) Haladu (yellow toned timber, which derives its name from Haladi or turmeric. This is primarily used for the roofing system and columns in certain spaces. 2) Upcycled Wood – Indian teakwood, salvaged from 100 to 150 old dilapidated buildings in the region. Majorly done by local carpenters headed by a sutar, who is a master-carpenter, carrying his skills through generations.

Viveda Wellness Retreat / a for architecture - Exterior Photography, Brick

Clay Pot Tiles : Clay pot tiles, which are used for roofing are made by a kumbhar (from the potter community) using the traditional methods learnt over decades usually within the community itself. The changing economy and building practices in the villages narrowed their practice down to only pot making. This was the largest consignment of pot tiles the kumbhar had ever received. As the kumbhar involved various family members and other villagers in the process, it became a good economic opportunity for the community.

Spatiality.  Spatially speaking, the project intends to deliberately invoke a sense of inhabiting the historically prominent architectural types of the region. Historically speaking, several political and spiritual practices have left their architectural traces in the landscape of Sahyadri hills and Trimbekashwar. Among which the fascinating ones are the medieval forts -typically built on top of the mountains; Wadas - beautifully crafted medieval houses of the rich merchants; Kunds - subterranean water bodies popular since the Harappan cities but explicitly seen in the temple towns across the regions; Chaityas - the beautiful and tedious Buddhist caves and monasteries; Ghats - the sacred river-front stretches of steps leading to various rivers where architecture and landscape becomes one. Each of these building types have a very specific and memorable spatial quality which the project invokes in various parts.

Viveda Wellness Retreat / a for architecture - Interior Photography

For instance, in the amenities block, made of five squares, each of the squares is designed separately with five different functions and a corresponding spatial quality: Naturopathy cluster as Wada; Massage rooms as courtyard houses; yoga and meditation dome as Chaityas; Swimming pool as Kund; and the amphitheatre and restaurant as ghats. The five squares are merged into one long block, with specific transition spaces, to create a spatial sequence with different volumes, qualities of light and shadow, textures and movement patterns that are learnt from the above mentioned architectural types, from the region, and an in-depth understanding of the respective functions. One of the results of such an approach is that it creates a heterogeneously homogeneous space.

Viveda Wellness Retreat / a for architecture - Exterior Photography, Stairs, Brick

The guest rooms are mainly conceived as clusters from a small settlement with winding streets and courtyards. Each cluster is organized as a circle, freely placed on a natural sloping ground to create a meandering path around all the clusters at different levels. The common court shared by four cottages becomes a social space for the guests to interact with each other and enjoy the distant views of the landscape, sitting in their verandahs.

Viveda Wellness Retreat / a for architecture - Image 45 of 54

The monolithic character of the buildings also helps in framing a continuous contrast between the landscape, the sky, and the space of the building, thereby always pushing the attention of the person from the building to the landscape, the environment around and perhaps even to oneself.

Kerala: An Ayurveda retreat in the heart of God’s own country

By Rathina Sankari

Kerala An Ayurveda retreat in the heart of God's own country

I stand with my eyes closed. The wind blows gently, I can hear the calls of the pond, a stream gurgling when a butterfly caresses me. I am at Kairali—The Ayurvedic Healing Village in Palakkad, Kerala. The 50-acres resort with 30 villas is built on the fundamental principles of vastu and harmony amidst a thick foliage of native trees like the coconut, neem, mango and teak far away from the city life. The wellness retreat is set amidst the natural surroundings of a tropical world of flora and fauna and is about 17 km from Palakkad train station and 72 km from Coimbatore airport.

Ayurvedic Retreat, Kerala: Vastu-Inspired Spaces

Guests reside in villas that are assigned to them as per their zodiac signs. Each villa houses the rare valambari conch, which induces positive vibrations in the body. Extensive use of red oxide in the flooring helps create cool interiors. Each villa is unique and designed as per the age-old tradition of vastu. Heavy usage of the locally available laterite stones, red tiled sloping roofs and less usage of cement in the villas, dining area and treatment centres are noticeable. A stream flows through the 50-acre resort with a 15-acre built-up area, thus bringing harmony to the surroundings rich with birds and about 48 species of butterflies.

Ayurvedic Retreat, Kerala: Holistic Treatments

The retreat offers guests various Ayurvedic treatments like abhyangam, shirodhara, panchakarma and more after having consulted with the in-house team of experienced Ayurvedic doctors. The treatments focus on weight loss, eye care, bronchial issues, preventive and regenerative treatments, rejuvenation and detoxification, hypertension, arthritis and many other conditions. Daily classes of yoga and meditation help balance and heal the body. My days at the retreat started at 6:30 with an hour's session of yoga followed by breakfast, ayurvedic treatment and lunch. Most evenings I would sit curled up in the veranda of my villa with a book in hand, watching the stream flow and the 48 odd species of butterflies fluttering around. Soon it would be time for pranayam and meditation around sunset.

Ayurvedic Retreat, Kerala: Healthy Menu

The guests at the retreat are served traditional sattvic food that is vegetarian and prepared with organic fruits and vegetables cultivated in its organic farm. The nutritious food helps bring about a balance in the doshas (vatta, pitta and kapha) of the body. At the restaurant, I would sip umpteen glasses of water boiled with the wonder antioxidant pathimugam or sappan wood with numerous health benefits. My meals comprised light and clear vegetable soups with lentil curry, seasonal vegetable stir fries, phulkas, green gram dosas, finger millet dosas and lip-smacking desserts made with seasonal fruits and palm jaggery. Food was light and wholesome and tasted just like a home-made meal. The caffeine, tea and sugar detox ensured good sleep and better energy levels through the day.

Profile image of Aadesh Raj Sharma

Today’s world is the world of Science and development, there has been huge development of nation. Because of competition environment in every fields, we can now see all the development race in medical field to education field, from small jobs to huge business field. Architecture is also one of them, we can now see the development taking place in every sectors of Architectural field, from residential project to space station. There are many opportunities that initiates the development of individual, public and nation as a whole. Regarding the project to be chosen for Architecture Thesis of Bachelor degree, I am seeking to choose for the Architecture which is socially responsible, that helps to lift up the present scenario of medicinal fields in Nepal, and a space to research about the plants. Medicinal plants are globally valuable sources of herbal products, and they are disappearing at a rapid speed. This report intends to emphasize the more managed and efficient center for sustainable use of medicinal plant resources. The medicinal and aromatic plants are the gift of nature to Nepal itself. We have so many resources and yet the means to study them, to utilize them effectively and to research the health benefits they can serve, there is a dire need for a research center within the Valley. Even though Kathmandu valley consists of numerous officials that can produce, examine and use the medicinal and aromatic plants, they are very limited and the study about such plants have not been properly done. This thesis project about Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Center shall provide a platform for the researchers, the learners to know more about the medicinal plants, their values and the ways to cultivate, preserve as well as process them for a better outcome that is needed for all of us. Based on the literature and case study of existing research centers in Kathmandu valley and some International Research Centers for medicinal plants, I have analyzed the important factors and consideration for a proper research center. Results and necessary recommendation are also included for creating a successful research centers for medicinal and aromatic plants. Additionally, a whole complex has been designed on a chosen site and the output can also be seen in this report. From concept to design development, the planning, designs, calculations, services, everything has been thought it its possible practicality and thus the report is a complete manifestation of the whole project from its study phase to the design phase.

This study aimed to document the traditional medicinal knowledge of local people of Ramkot village about plants to cure various diseases. Primary data were collected from old aged people of village by using semi structured interview of Key informants. A total of 51 medicinal plants belonging to 38families and 51 genera were documented to treat different diseases and injuries. The highest (29) number of medicinal plants were herbs and lowest (2) were climbers. Majority of them were used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. The study area was found to be rich in plant resources and the old aged people have ample knowledge on the use of medicinal plants. But young generation is not interested about herbal medicine due to easy access of hospitals and modern medical facilities. Due to lack of proper documentation, conservation and cultivation practices, many useful plant species are at risk of extinction in this village.

Athreya Ayurvedic Centre : Best Ayurvedic Centre | Ayurvedic Health Resort | Ayurveda Treatment

Restoring the Body’s natural balance through Panchakarma

Being no stranger to Ayurvedic treatments, Natasha says she is very much familiar with the acclaimed Panchakarma or the cleansing treatment “I have been doing panchakarma since 2007 in different ayurvedic centres in India, so planning my next trip I was very attentive to the details mostly related to the medical procedure and spirit of the place overall”.

  • Patient Name: Natasha Gorbatyuk
  • Country: Moscow, Russia
  • Medical condition tested for: Detoxication of toxins from the body
  • Arrived with Symptoms: Need for improving mental health
  • Condition after treatment: Refreshment in body and mind after intense cleansing treatment

She says that she was in search of a real Ayurvedic centre, that included a specified diet, advanced yoga classes that were combined with excessive treatments, not to mention the authentic surroundings that provides a comfortable accommodation.

As a guest arriving from Russia, when asked about her experience with Athreya, she says that she received a personalised care and from the doctors in Athreya, even before her arrival there, which impressed her the most. “I got professional opinion and detailed prognoses of my treating doctor, Dr. Sreejit, on my health status and desirable results of the treatments long before arrival to the resort”

She goes on to elaborate on the doctor’s approach saying that the patient’s health condition ad medical history will be analysed and determined before the beginning of the treatment. She claims that this approach of having a customised treating plan beforehand has greatly helped her to establish trust and effective communication with her doctors from the very first day of her arrival “His approach is based on deep evaluation of the medical history and current compliance of a client through live Skype conversations”.

Natasha also mentions that the flexibility of treatment given to each patient is one of the main advantages of Athreya. The treatment process is not just constricted to the number of initially prescribed procedures but changes depending on the body’s response.

She compliments the fact that the medicine prescribed are in fact prepared within the premises. “All ayurvedic medicines you are given while and after the course are produced at the own pharmacy and proven by long-time experimental usage since their recipes passed from generation to generation of the family of Ayurvedic doctors, who established and run the resort”.

On speaking about her doctors, she relates to how they helped her blend in with the new surroundings. “Doctor Jayakrishnan and Doctor Jayalakshmi are personally involved not only at professional related questions but also very responsive to any client’s needs, ready to help with any issues. They surround guests with positive attitude and personal responsibility making our life in resort calm and relaxed”

She claims that the comfortable and peaceful environment that surrounded her, along with the family-like attitude of the staff enhanced her experience. It played a huge role in enhancing her overall experience in Athreya compared to various other centres around the world. “the highly professional treatments brought excellent result and definitely will make me come back to the Athreya over and over again!”

She approves of the Panchakarma treatment after analysing and experiencing its positive effects on her body. She recommends the process of detoxication for anybody who is seeking for the real Ayurvedic treatment and not just a spa. “Athreya is the best place ever under perfectly balanced Price-Results conditions. If you get a room faces the paddy field you will be granted with incredibly beautiful sunset performance you can enjoy from your terrace every evening”.
