And following all horror movies is a sequel: The Belko Experiment 2!

We’ve asked out industry contacts for their thoughts and now we tell you everything about the sequel to The Belko Experiment.

“I have a very good idea about where Belko goes from here and how the experiment would continue and if we’re lucky enough to make a few bucks and the audience would like to see a sequel, then I think that would be something that we’d be very willing to give them,” screenwriter and amazing guy behind Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn told Complex.com.

The Plot of Belko Experiment 2

In the first Belko Experiment, a bunch of office workers were all locked inside their building. A voice over a PA tells them they have to kill X number of people or else everyone dies. This goes on and on and such in predictable fashion. It all takes place in Columbia so it was cool with the local authorities.

The 2nd film will be the same thing. That’s all. It’s Saw with suits, basically. We’ll see creative ways to kill people using staplers and pencils and other office supplies. And someone will probably fuck. And it’ll be revealed that there’s something evil about the company.

Also, again… TITS !

Who doesn’t wanna see boobies and blood? Hell, that’s my idea of foreplay!

Belko Experiment 2 DIRECTOR

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn wrote and came up with the first movie. He didn’t direct it but I could see him jumping on for the second edition. A smaller, simple movie that he can bang out in a few months is something that a lot of directors and artists need in life. It’s a palate cleanser. Like how I suspect that Josh Whedon will do so one day with Serenity 2 .

Belko Experiment 2 name is…

Time to spitball movie titles:

  • Belko 2: Saw with Suits
  • The Belko Follow Up
  • The Belko Test
  • The Belko Experiment 2
  • The Belko Hypothesis
  • The Belko Scientific Method
  • Belko Boobies
  • Belko Saw You Last Summer

Belko Experiment 2 Movie Cast

Some of the same, some new. I expect a Wahlberg to appear too.

  • John Gallagher Jr. as Mike Melch, an employee at the Belko Corporation
  • Tony Goldwyn as Barry Norris, the COO of Belko
  • Adria Arjona as Leandra Jerez, Norris’ assistant
  • John C. McGinley as Wendell Dukes, a socially awkward top executive
  • Melonie Diaz as Dany Wilkins, a new hire at Belko
  • Josh Brener as Keith McLure, a tech worker
  • David Del Rio as Roberto Jerez

I mentioned James Gunn before, weren’t you paying attention? I bet he’s got a bunch of ideas. Like the guy who created The Purge franchise.

Belko Experiment 2 RELEASE DATE

2018. It comes out in early 2017 and these things SERIOUSLY take 5 months from writing to editing to finish. It’ll come out in the 4Q of 2018.

Belko Experiment 2 BOX OFFICE

Just like how Taken and The Purge make money because they cost nothing, so too will Belko Experiment 2. As always, for reference, this is how Taken has done:

  • Taken: $22m cost; $226m box office
  • Taken 2: $43m cost; $376m box office
  • Taken 3: $55m cost; $326.5m box office

I say that Belko Experiment 2 makes $100m, easily, and everyone goes, “Wow, we have a new hit franchise on our hands.”

Also, the thing is produced by Orion, which produced and gave the world ROBOCOP!!!!!!!!!

Nonononononono… It should go on as such =

Ordinary or average joe suits potentials are awakened during the otherwise traumatic event.

The victors kill off the “initial” testers THEN…

Stage 2: The victors are made aware that they are going to be wanted fugitives by an international organization, they are also made aware of one another. The test is to see how one could create something of a sleeper cell. The new world order can feed such cells of people wrong information in order to bring about the desired affect. I.E. attacks on certain governments – yada yada. Etc.

This would set up for a third installation of the belko experiement. When Mike’s cell of victors finds out that this was all part of the continued experiment and that their targets who they had miraculously systematically eradicated were in fact the targets of those running the experiments. Then they go off the grid.

To return in the third and possibly final installation of the Belk trilogy. Because lets be real, anything beyond three movies unless it was a popular book series to begin with usually loses momentum and direction after the third movie. By this time they have unconventional experience at a level similar to Jason Bourne. Now, should they end the movie with the victors as victors? Or should they “lose” only to find out that the experiment goes on for others but ends for them?

Just a fan wanting to see more.

Love your straw man argument. “I clearly hate horror, so I’m going to deride a sequel by talking about something that wasn’t in the first one.” In this case, tits and sex. Neither of which was in the Belko Experiment. Articles like this is why people should only be allowed to write about things they know. Have you tried worrying about nothing? You clearly know a lot about that subject.

Orion Pictures and BH Tilt have revealed the 2nd frenetic trailer for writer/producer James ( Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy ) Gunn and Wolf Creek director Greg McLean’s upcoming satirical bloodbath The Belko Experiment . And it’s even more insane than the first!

Taking its cues from Lord of the Flies and Battle Royale by way of The Hunger Games , the wildly gory The Belko Experiment explores a twisted social experiment, in which a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogata, Columbia and ordered by an unknown voice on an intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.

The cast for The Belko Experiment includes John Gallagher Jr. ( Short Term 12 ), Melonie Diaz ( Fruitvale Station ), John C. McGinley ( Office Space ), Tony Goldwyn ( Scandal ), David Dastmalchian ( The Dark Knight ), Gail Bean ( Unexpected ), Michael Rooker ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), Valentine Miele ( Super ), Sean Gunn ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), Mikaela Hoover ( Super ), Josh Brener ( Silicon Valley ), Rusty Schwimmer ( Louie ), Joe Fria ( Speedwagon ), James Earl ( The Lazarus Effect ), Brent Sexton (The Killing), Stephen Blackehart ( Tromeo and Juliet ), David Del Rio ( Pitch Perfect ) and Ben Davis ( Red Dead Redemption ).

Check out the trailer below and for more bloody Belko fun, go to the Official Facebook page for a special message from “Human Resources.”

The film will debut in theaters on March 17.

With  The Belko Experiment  opening in theaters this weekend, a few days ago I sat down with  James Gunn  to talk about writing the film. During the interview he revealed how he the story came to him in a dream, why the project wasn’t made in 2007, how they filmed two different endings, how  Belko  is the return of Orion Pictures and what that means to him, his thoughts on doing Belko Experiment sequels, and more. In addition, with Gunn hard at work finishing up  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , he talked about where they are in the edit, how they only have one deleted scene, why you should see it in 3D, test screenings, and his relationship with  Michael Rooker .

If you’re not familiar with director Greg McLean’s The Belko Experiment  , the film is about a deadly social experiment that sees a group of 80 Americans locked inside a Bogata, Colombia high-rise corporate office and given the directive to kill or be killed. It stars  John Gallagher Jr. ,  Tony Goldwyn ,  Adria Arjona , John C. McGinley , Josh Brener ,   Michael Rooker , David Dastmalchian and Melonie Diaz .

Sean Gunn Says “No Plans” For The Belko Experiment Sequel…Yet

Image of Michael Briers

The Belko Experiment , arguably the scrappy underdog of 2016’s film selection, proved to be a rare cinematic treat – Office Space meets Battle Royale , as our own Matt Donato so aptly put  it.

Sandwiched between Guardians of the Galaxy  and its rip-roaring sequel,  The Belko Experiment also lent James Gunn the chance to write and produce a tight-knit thriller, the likes of which we haven’t seen from the filmmaker since his days on Slither . He’s about to circle back to the genre thanks to his plum horror gig with Universal and Elizabeth Banks , but what about the chances of a true sequel to The Belko Experiment ?

That very question was posed to Gunn’s younger brother, Sean Gunn (Marty Espenscheid in TBE ), during a recent interview with Screen Geek, to which he replied:

I don’t know. The movie was, I guess, a little bit of a success, but it’s always hard to guess that sort of thing. As of now, there are no plans that I know of – but we sure had a lot of fun doing that.

The Belko Experiment

Those comments were made at a recent MCM Comic-Con in Birmingham, where Gunn was in town promoting his involvement in Avengers: Infinity War . And just like Guardians of the Galaxy volumes 1 and 2, the forthcoming Marvel sequel will see him perform motion capture for the irreverent Rocket Racoon.

He’ll seemingly take a backseat to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes when the lights go down on April 27th, while we’re also learning that Infinity War is as much Thanos’ origin story as it is an Avengers sequel.

But what are your thoughts on Sean Gunn’s view of The Belko Experiment and its chances of a sequel? You can, as always, chime in via the usual place.

James Gunn Talks The Belko Experiment, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

One of geekdom’s favorite creators on The Belko Experiment and where he’s at with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Den of Geek caught up with James Gunn late last week at the holiday party for Belko Industries, which was actually a party to launch the new trailer for the upcoming film The Belko Experiment . Written and produced by Gunn (along with Blumhouse Films), the movie takes place in a corporate high-rise in Bogota, Colombia where all the employees are basically ordered to start killing each other if they want to survive. From the gripping and darkly funny trailer, the movie (directed by Greg McLean of Wolf Creek fame) looks one part High-Rise , one part The Stanford Prison Experiment and one part Battle Royale , all filtered through the acidly satiric worldview that Gunn brings to his work.

In between bites of tacos, we spent a few minutes talking about Gunn about The Belko Experiment as well as that little indie film he’s currently working on, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , which he has written and directed and is currently in post-production on for a May 5, 2017 release, while The Belko Experiment — which stars John Gallagher Jr. ( 10 Cloverfield Lane ), Tony Goldwyn ( Scandal ), John C. McGinley ( Stan Against Evil ) and Gunn muse Michael Rooker ( Guardians of the Galaxy , The Walking Dead ) opens on March 17.

Den of Geek: It’s my understanding that this is a script you’ve had in your pocket that you’ve wanted to do for a while.

James Gunn: Yeah. Being completely honest, I wrote this movie right around the time I was getting a divorce. I had just gotten divorced, and the movie got greenlit. We were going to go down to São Paulo, Brazil, and shoot it, which strangely I’m flying to tomorrow for a comic book convention. We were going to shoot it, and I just wanted to be around my friends and family. I didn’t want to go shoot this thing that was about people who loved and cared about each other being forced into killing each other. It just didn’t seem to be the way I wanted to spend the next few months of my life. So I backed out of it.

Ad – content continues below

After that, different things happened. Super happened, and whatever. All the things that led to doing Guardians . Then I just got caught up in doing other stuff. But I still liked the script. I had kind of forgotten about it. I’d never really totally forgotten about it, but I had kind of forgotten about it. Then (MGM president) Jon Glickman called me, who I’ve known since I first moved to Los Angeles. He called me and he’s like, “What are you doing with this script of Belko Experiment ?” I said, “Nothing.” He said, “Well listen, if you can make it for a certain price, then I’ll do it,” and I’m like, “Can I kinda do whatever I want with it? I mean, hire the director that I want? Do the thing that I want? Hire the actors? If I can do my thing and not have a lot of interference, or if I don’t have any interference, and have final say on stuff, then I’ll do it.” He was like, “Okay”. That’s how it all came about.

Did you ever entertain the idea of still directing it yourself? Or did you want to pass that torch along?

It’s simply a matter of time. It would have been fun to direct it. I would have loved to direct it. I would have loved to have worked with this cast. I sat, I went down for about a month of the shoot, and I loved to be around that cast in particular. It’s one of the greatest casts I’ve ever been around. Both in terms of who they are as people, and also just the talent. I was very jealous of it.

But Guardians for me, it takes all of my time. It’s like, I draw the fucking monsters and the space ships, and I have to write it from the beginning. It just takes a long time. I knew how rushed I was on the first Guardians , where I came in at, it felt like the last minute, even though it was practically two years. I came in, and they were like, “Write us a new script, and get it all started. Get going. Move.” Writing while we’re shooting, and all that kind of stuff that I hate doing. On this one, I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to have a script that I’d taken time with, that I loved, that was a nice work of art within itself, that I could then turn into a really cool movie.

To get a script to that place, it takes time. You can’t do it by backing into a date. So I started it the day the first one came out, I started writing the second script, and spent most of my time working on that script, and then planning it out. Being much more a part of dealing with the color palettes, and all of that type of stuff that I just didn’t have the time to do on the first one.

What did we drag you away from tonight? Where are you at in post-production on Guardians ?

We’re pretty far along in the edit, but the little things left seem like big things to me. The movie is testing better than anything we’ve ever done. It’s great. But I want it to be, perfect is not fair to say because it will never be perfect, but I want it to be really as great as it can possibly be. I want to create the best spectacle film that’s ever existed. That takes a lot of soul. A lot of heart. It takes a lot of time, and it wears me out. That’s where I am.

Back to Belko, I think there’s certainly a comparison to be made to something like High-Rise or other films along these lines.

Definitely Battle Royale . There’s no doubt, I really loved Battle Royale , and thought, I’d like to be able to do that with a totally different environment. That one was obviously children, a very strange situation. It was a little bit more surreal, I guess, than this movie in certain ways. To be able to do it with adults, and do it in a way that it’s something people can relate to. Your office. You have to kill somebody. You don’t want to kill somebody, but you have to. Who do you kill? Who’s the guy you kill? Or do you not do it? You just refuse to do it, and die yourself. What do you do?

The fun of making those choices, which we can all relate to that in a weird way, I think, is the fun of Belko .

You have a really great open window there for a lot of black comedy about the corporate environment as well. Is that an aspect of that?

Absolutely. Growing up in a family of lawyers and having that, looking at that and looking at my own career life, and what that’s like. How competitive I can be at times. How competitive people around me are forced to be. I think that it is a difficult part of our lives, living in a capitalist country.

We’re getting pulled away, but one quick thing on Guardians 2 again. There was recently a story about how Marvel swapped Negasonic Teenage Warhead to Fox for them to use in Deadpool in exchange for the rights to use Ego the Living Planet in your movie. Did you have a Plan B in case that didn’t happen?

That isn’t exactly what happened. I was told the full deal, and then I sort of misreported it. What happened was, there are characters that are owned by Marvel, there are characters that are owned by Fox. There are certain characters that are owned by Marvel and Fox. That causes a lot of problems. Like the Quicksilver thing, obviously. Two people making movies ( X-Men: Days of Future Past and Avengers: Age of Ultron ) with Quicksilver in them.

Marvel and Fox co-owned Negasonic, and we co-owned Ego. Those were two characters that were co-owned by both companies. They came to us and they said, “What do we have to do to get the rights to this character, blah blah blah…” We said, “Eh, I don’t know. Give us … I don’t know, who knows. Some stupid character. Give us Ego,” who they had no clue was such a linchpin of the whole cosmic side of Guardians . But, I didn’t know any of this. It wasn’t until right after that happened that they told me. But there are other characters we’ve used that are co-owned. We probably still would have done it. But I didn’t know. I just thought we owned the character outright, and I think those guys believed we owned the character outright too, until they did a little digging and found out.

The Belko Experiment is out in theaters March 17, 2017.

Belko Experiment Stage 2 (fan idea)

So recently I've watched The Belko Experiment, and found it to be a rather interesting watch. There aren't any plans on a sequal, however I think it would be interesting if for the second one to take place in a high end hotel. After the first couple of announcments, and the numbers are a bit more evened out, the voice then announces how many guests and how many staff are left, the new requirement is X amount of staff and X amount of guests must be terminated, pitting them against each other and resulting in total chaos. Afterwards, the voice then makes it a free for all, allowing 3 people with the most kills to be set free. What do you guys think of this concept?

The Belko Experiment

belko experiment part 2

You don’t need to squint very hard to see the satirical elements that might have elevated blood-soaked horror flick “The Belko Experiment” to greatness. The premise—a group of employees are forced to kill each other at the whims of an anonymous employer—is promising. But the script, penned by James Gunn (“ Guardians of the Galaxy ,” “Slither”), is undercooked, its violence foregrounded to the point of distraction. Many people will either love or hate this film based on how gory and aggressively cynical it is. But realistically, Gunn’s biggest conceptual failure is that his scenario is thoughtlessly cruel. The characters could have embodied traits of typical office drones and managers, turning the film into a savage black comedy. But those elements aren’t developed beyond a point, making the movie’s only selling point its excessive gore and violence.

You’ll notice, from the start, how easy it is to either identify with or dismiss characters in “The Belko Experiment” based on how they respond to the stress of being told to kill their fellow employees. Never mind that stress makes people do crazy things: we’re supposed to sympathize with by-the-book employee Mike (John Gallagher Jr.) because he’s a moderate voice of reason compared to self-appointed megalomaniac Barry ( Tony Goldwyn ). Mike is the kind of guy who encourages his fellow employees to take the stairs, not the elevators while Barry is the kind of guy who says that the group should “consider our options” and think about cooperating with the mysterious uber-boss who’s compelling them to kill each other. Both characters clash sooner rather than later because each employee has a GPS micro-chip implanted in their heads—they are working in Bogota, where kidnappings are supposedly not uncommon—which is ultimately used as an explosive to pick off disobedient employees.

Secondary characters either voice their disapproval or support of Barry and Mike’s respective positions: Mike insists that nobody has “the right to choose who lives and who dies” while Barry suggests that they have no choice. You may, at some point, wonder if Barry has a point. But that moment will pass when you see the other guys he’s allied himself with, people like jittery, trigger-happy Lonny ( David Dastmalchian ) and sexual-harassment-happy Wendell ( John C. McGinley ). There’s no way to take the utilitarian position in this film because these guys are defined exclusively by personality-revealing bad behavior.

Conversely, there’s no way to relate to Mike because he’s such a generic goody-goody. What kind of guy warns people to take the stairs and not the elevators during such an emergency? That’s a half-serious question: I do not know anything about Mike beyond the fact that he handles stress well, talks other employees down from stress, and is a rational thinker given how much of the film’s early expository speculation comes from him (he’s a bit chatty at the start, but necessarily so since he’s essentially the lone voice of reason). There’s no way to tell what he was like before the Belko bosses starting killing their employees off, nor any way to know why we should sympathize with the character beyond the fact that he’s part of the solution and not the problem.

Then again, the lack of motivation could have also been a source of great comedy. Belko could be an office like any other: a place where bosses and fellow employees act kind and genial one minute but have the potential to transform into domineering thugs as soon as they fear they’re going to be thrown under the bus. That’s who Lonny, the most sympathetic of Gunn’s baddies, seems to be. But he’s annoyingly knock-kneed, and ineffectual, making him instantly unlikable. McGinley’s character is defined by his insincere toothy grin, and proud tendency of showing off his muscles, making his narcissism all too apparent. And Barry just wants to stay in control, as he shows when he undermines nice guy security guard Evan ( James Earl ) by breaking into the company’s weapons cache(!).

This makes a bloody, unpleasant series of murders the only reason to see “The Belko Experiment.” Director Greg McLean (“ Wolf Creek ,” “Rogue”) fails to distinguish himself during medium close-up shots of heads exploding and torsos flailing. But McLean’s contributions to “The Belko Experiment” aren’t what makes the film so disappointing. Gunn’s unimaginative conception of a “Battle Royale” meets “ Office Space ” style horror film—I just bet that that was the elevator pitch—holds a decent cast back from dying meaningful deaths. Even the most diehard gorehounds and Gunn supporters should give this stinker a pass.

Synopsis [ ]

Mike Milch is arriving at work several employees are sent home by new guards leaving 80 people including Mike, Barry Norris, Adria Arjona played by Mikes' girlfriend Leandra Jerez, and new recruit Danielle Wilkins. A voice comes over the intercom and instructs the employees to kill 2 people. However nobody believes it, Marty Espenscheid thinks it's a psychological test and Barry thinks it's a prank until one of Martys friends head explodes followed by 3 other people.

The voice comes back instructing them they have 2 hours to kill 30 people or 60 of them will die. Mike, Leandra and Keith try to flag the guards but the guards fire at them with assault rifles. Bud Melks and Lonny Crane try to break the metal on the doors and windows but fail so they go into the basement with Dany. Lonny attacks them with a wrench, he kills Bud but Dany kicks him into a pipe which results in him getting impaled. Barry, Wendell, Antonio, Terry, and Bradly attempt to open the weapon safe. Mike Leandra and Evan try to stop them but Wendell stabs Evan and steals the keys, Mike is knocked out as well. Barry and his crew begin their killing spree. Johnathan & 10 others are executed. Mike is about to be executed however Dany turns off the lights of the facility, which results in all of the surviving employees excluding Barry and his group, fleeing. Now desperate to get a total of 30 kills, Barry and his group open fire on the fleeing employees. Soon afterwards, Barry’s group attempts to chase down the other employees which results in them splitting up. Antonio chases Peggy into a stairwell in order to kill her. However just as he was to kill her, Mike jumps on him distracting him long enough for Peggy to take Antonio‘s knife and kill Antonio. Bradley tries to restore the power to the facility but Vince tackles him to ground, he and several other employees, murder Bradley. At that point, 29 employees are killed in phase 2. The Voice contacts again to explain they only have 2 minutes to kill one more person or 31 additional employees will die. As Barry, Wendell and Terry are searching for more employees to kill, Leandra surprises Terry with a paper trimmer attempting to kill him but she hesitates to do so. The Voice then contacts the remaining employees & explains that the 2 minutes is up and 31 employees will be killed. Terry, Keith, Peggy and several others employees are then killed which leaves only 16 employees left in the building.

The Voice comes over the intercom & says it time for "Phase 3", Whoever kills the most people in one hour will be allowed to leave alive. Barry then kills Roberto but gets trapped in the elevator in the process. Wendell then finds and kills 2 employees in the bathroom. Leandra then finds Chet and Marty & they proceed to collect the bombs of the dead employees. Leandra, Chet and Marty then meet up with Mike. They stumble across Wendell pulling Tyson out of a freezer and dismembering him up. Leandra then shoots Wendell but not killing him, She then hides with Chet and Marty behind a table. Wendell then shoots and kills Chet & Marty but is killed by Leandra. Vince finally accepts that he has to kill, so he grabs Bradley’s pistol and kills Raziyah. Mike and Lezlie find Leandra but are attacked by Vince who kills Lezlie. As Vince is hunting Mike and Leandra, he gets killed by Barry. As Mike and Leandra are running away from Barry, Leandra gets shot & begins to bleed out. Barry then finds and kills Dany. Leandra soon dies from blood loss. Mike angrily kills Barry with a tape dispenser which makes Mike is the last survivor and is eventually carried away by two security guards, carefully attaching the bombs gathered earlier to the guards in the process. He is taken outside & brought into a nearby hangar.

Inside the hangar, The Voice has been watching, communicating & operating the experiment within. As the Voice is attempting to question Mike, Mike notices a switchboard with every employees name on it that allowed detonation of the the bombs that were implanted. Mike suddenly runs to the switchboard & flips every switch except the switch with his name on it. All of the bombs explode, killing the security guards & wounding the Voice in the process. Mike then picks up one of the guard‘s assault rifles and kills the two other employees working with the Voice. As the Voice pleads, Mike shoots the Voice. Mike then exits the hangar. The camera panes out revealing Mike to be one of many sole survivors of other Belko experiments across South America. Another voice is heard saying commence stage 2.

Star Wars: The Knights Of Ren & 9 Other Canceled Concepts From The Sequel Trilogy

I was wrong about netflix's new rambo & reacher action movie "replacement", the crow 2024’s box office eyeing franchise-low global milestone, the belko experiment makes for a truly fascinating concept, but is dragged down by mundane execution that doesn't always engage the viewer..

It seems like a normal day at the Columbia-based nonprofit company Belko Industries office building, as employees such as Mike Velch (Jason Gallagher, Jr.), Leandra Jerez (Adria Arjona), Wendell Dukes (John C. McGinley), and COO Barry Norris (Tony Goldwyn) arrive for work and go about their business. However, things quickly turn sideways when the entire building becomes covered in large metal windows that lock everyone inside. A mysterious voice comes over the intercom, telling the 80 people that they need to kill two of their co-workers or suffer severe consequences. Brushing it off as a cruel prank, the employees ignore the message before learning that their tormentors are very much for real.

With no way to escape or call for help, the surviving employees have to figure out a way to deal with this unprecedented and bizarre situation. Matters only get worse when the voice returns to announce that 30 people must be murdered in any way possible in two hours, or else 60 will be killed by those in control. Work friendships and relationships are put to the ultimate test as Belko is split into various allegiances, with both sides looking to end the horror before everyone dies.

A group of office workers in The Belko Experiment

The Belko Experiment is the latest small-budget horror film from Blumhouse, the studio behind genre hits like the  Purge  and  Insidious franchises. Written by  Guardians of the Galaxy helmsman James Gunn, the hope going in was that the film could operate as an entertaining thrill ride that provides the audience with some food for thought on the human condition. It ends up being a mixed bag, as  The Belko Experiment makes for a truly fascinating concept, but is dragged down by mundane execution that doesn't always engage the viewer.

Fans know Gunn is a writer famous for his sense of humor, but  The Belko Experiment leans more on thriller sensibilities than comedy (save for the amusing line of dialogue or two). He crafts an interesting "what if?" scenario that makes for a compelling discussion long after the credits have rolled. Part of the fun of  The Belko Experiment is the individual moviegoer following along with the characters, trying to decide what they would do if they were posed with this dilemma. As expected, the core group at Belko falls into its own "civil war" setup where certain people firmly believe killing anyone is wrong, while others feel murder may be best for the sake of the company. Though the film obviously favors one opinion over the other, both have sound arguments to make - especially when wives and children back home are taken into account.

The Belko Experiment - We Are Being Held Hostage Sign

The premise of  Belko is its strongest point, as the film itself lacks the satirical edge needed to make an absurd idea like this really work on the big screen. Conversations about the "right" thing to do never dig below the surface level and some moviegoers might be left wishing for something that goes into a deeper analysis. Some of this might be the approach of director Greg McLean ( Wolf Creek ), as he plays  The Belko Experiment mainly as a straight, serious horror movie as opposed to a (very) dark comedy that provides social commentary. It's clear just from the main plot that the movie had some fairly high aspirations with what it could do, but the creative team falls short of those, preventing  The Belko Experiment from becoming anything all that special. Additionally, the kills are quite standard for this sort of fare, which will be disappointing for viewers eager to see some grisly, creative murders.

In terms of the performances, the movie is anchored by Gallagher, Jr., who is essentially the main hero. There isn't a whole lot of depth to his Mike character, but the actor makes for a solid conduit for the regular everyman watching, grounding the proceedings by giving  The Belko Experiment a human element that boosts the final product. He's complemented nicely by Arjona as Mike's girlfriend Leandra. Likewise, that role is a bit thinly written, but the two do make for a good pair and are easy to root for as the gore ratchets up as the film moves along. Most viewers will probably find themselves aligning with Mike's faction, since they frequently come across as the more relatable and "normal" ones, given the circumstances.

The protagonists attempt to escape fire in The Belko Experiment

Underwritten parts are prevalent in  The Belko Experiment , as many of the supporting characters are there to simply fill out the office and react the carnage happening around them. While this is understandable, it also prevents many of the murders from having any kind of impact in the grand scheme of things, and the people in the movie are largely props taking part in a sadistic game. That said, Goldwyn and McGinely have more to do than others and try to make the most of their screen time. The former's Barry Norris morphs into a foil for Mike, though Goldwyn does make some acting choices to prevent Belko's COO from becoming a mindless, mustache-twirling villain. On the flip side, McGinley's Wendell is a stereotypical office creep who comes across as cartoonish at times. The rest of the cast is rounded out by frequent Gunn collaborators Michael Rooker, Gunn's brother Sean, David Dastmalchian, and Melonie Diaz, who all do decent work, but nothing all that substantial.

On-paper,  The Belko Experiment sounded like a great concept, but is hampered by run-of-the-mill direction that doesn't elevate the material to the next level. Its fate is most likely to become a new guilty pleasure for horror fans, since its svelte running time (well under two hours) and violence make it a fun watch if one's expectations aren't set too high. Gunn and McLean deserve credit for trying something with the potential to be original and different, they just couldn't quite get all the way there. Viewers intrigued by the marketing might get a kick out of seeing The Belko Experiment in theaters with a group of friends, but those on the fence can wait for home media.

The Belko Experiment is now playing in U.S. theaters. It runs 88 minutes and is rated R for strong bloody violence throughout, language including sexual references, and some drug use.
