Impact of Teachers on a Student’s Life

Growing up, our parents and teachers are the first ones to impact our lives significantly. In fact, in the younger years, students have complete faith in their teachers and they listen to their teachers more than their parents. This shows the significance and impact of a teacher .

When we become older and enter college, teachers become our friends. Some even become our role models. They inspire us to do great things in life. We learn how to be selfless by teachers. Teachers unknowingly also teach very important lessons to a student.

For instance, when a student gets hurt in school, the teacher rushes them to the infirmary for first aid. This makes a student feel secure and that they know a teacher plays the role of a parent in school.

The teachers who inspired us, and even changed the trajectories of our lives

Rita Pierson is the kind of teacher you wish you had. An educator for 40 years, she is funny, sharp and simply has a way with words — so much so that today’s talk feels a bit like a sermon.

“I have had classes so low, so academically deficient that I cried. I wondered, ‘How am I going to take this group in nine months from where they are to where they need to be?” says Pierson, in this amazing talk . “I came up with a bright idea … I gave them a saying: ‘I am somebody. I was somebody when I came and I’ll be a better somebody when I leave. I am powerful and I am strong. I deserve the education that I get here’ … You say it long enough, it starts to be a part of you.”

Essay About Being a Teacher: Top 5 Examples and Prompts

If you are writing an essay about being a teacher , here are some examples to give you inspiration.

Without a doubt, teaching is one of the most important professions one can have. Teachers give children the lessons they must learn to face the future and contribute positively to society. They can be considered the gateway to success stories such as Oprah Winfrey , Adele , and John Legend , all of whom have cited their teachers as major inspirations to their careers. 

Many educators would say that “teaching is its own reward.” However, it may be difficult to see how this is the case, especially considering the fact that being an educator entails massive amounts of stress and pressure. Teaching has actually been reported to be one of the most underpaid jobs , yet many teachers still love what they do. Why is this?

“Although strictly speaking, based on the appointments I hold, I really do not have time to do much of it. I say teach, not lecturing. The lecturer steps up to the lectern and declaims her knowledge. She points out the difficulties in the area, she talks about solutions to problems, and she makes suggestions for reform. The focus is on the subject – the students follow. The teacher, however, needs to meet the students where they are in order to bring them to where they have to be. The focus is on the student’s ability.”

Koh writes about how he teaches, the difficulties of teaching, and what it means to be a teacher. He helps his students hone their skills and use them critically. He also discusses the difficulty of connecting with each student and focusing their attention on application rather than mere knowledge. Koh wants students to achieve their full potential; teaching to him is engaging, inspirational, and transparent. He wants readers to know that being a teacher is rewarding yet difficult, and is something he holds close to his heart.

“‘I work until midnight each night trying to lock and load all my links, lessons, etc. I never get ahead,” one anonymous educator wrote. ‘Emails, endless email. Parents blaming me because their kids chose to stay in bed, on phones, on video games instead of doing work.’”

Singer writes about the difficult life of teachers trying to balance in-person and distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of the standard class routine, being a teacher during the pandemic has entailed the burden of handling students who opt for remote learning. They are faced with additional struggles, including connection issues, complaining parents , and being overworked in general- it’s as if they teach twice the number of classes as normal. This is exhausting and may prove detrimental to the American education system, according to the sources Singer cites. 

“What it means to me is that I am checking (or acknowledging) my privilege as a teacher in the space of the classroom and in order to facilitate a more equitable classroom community for my students, erasing one of the pillars of that inequity is a step in the right direction. I am comfortable in my role as the head member in my classroom, and I don’t need a teacher’s desk anymore to signify that.”

Morris, an educator, writes about what teaching means to him, highlighted by his decision to remove his teacher’s desk from his classroom. Being a teacher for him is about leading the discussion or being the “lead learner,” as he puts it, rather than being an instructor. His removal of the teacher’s desk was decided upon based on his desire to help his students feel more equal and at home in class. He believes that being a teacher means being able to foster authentic connections both for and with his students.

“Teachers want to help all students achieve, and the feeling of leaving any student behind is devastating. The pressure that they put on themselves to ensure that they serve all students can also contribute to the stress.”

Gomez writes about the stress that comes with being a teacher, largely due to time constraints, lack of resources, and the number of students they must instruct. As much as they want to help their students, their environment does not allow them to touch the lives of all students equally. They are extremely pressured to uphold certain standards of work, and while they try as hard as they can, they do not always succeed. As a result, many teachers have left the profession altogether. Gomez ends her piece with an invitation for teachers to read about other job opportunities. 

“Then I re-evaluate what I want for myself, and what it is that keeps me working towards my dreams. Through the goals I’ve set for myself, I can maintain focus, move past my self-doubt and succeed. By focusing on my goals , I can make a difference in the world directly around me.”

Taken from a collection of short essays, England’s essay is about why she so desperately wishes to become a teacher. She was previously able to work as a teaching assistant to her former elementary school teacher, and enjoyed imparting new knowledge unto children . Even in moments of self-doubt, she reminds herself to be confident in her dreams and hopes to be able to make a difference in the world with her future profession.

When it comes to teachers, we often hear about either “the joy of teaching” or the immense stress that comes with it. You can explore the gratitude and satisfaction that teachers feel toward their jobs, even with all the struggles they face. Read or watch the news and interviews with teachers themselves.

Research on the skills and qualifications people need to be teachers, as well as any qualities they may need to do their job well. What skills can you get from teaching? What traits can you develop? What lessons can you learn? 

Despite the seemingly endless barrage of stories about the difficulties that teachers face, many people still want to teach. You can explore the reasoning behind their decisions, and perhaps get some personal insight on being a teacher as well.

There is something very magical about her. Maybe, she was the first teacher in my life or maybe, she was very sweet in talking to all of us, I am unable to portray why she is always my favourite. I relied on her blindly.

Unforgettable Memories:

I have some cherished memories with my teacher. Whenever I think of those memories, it makes me blissful. On the last day of my nursery school, I started crying at the very thought of leaving her and having a new teacher. I had fallen sick due to crying for hours together. I skipped my food. My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

Conclusion:

Having a good teacher who can share an amalgamated relationship with the students is a boon. A good teacher should be a good mentor, a philosopher, a guide, a friend and above all a surrogate parent to the children. I am lucky that I had gotten one in my lifetime.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

In school, you tend to interact with a lot of people who can either impact your life positively or negatively. A teacher is one neutral person who will manage to strike a balance between the positive and the negative. Teachers have a huge responsibility that we students may not understand. Who Is my favourite Teacher?

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

How the teacher has impacted my life in school .

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. The good thing is the attention he gives t is students because most of the times, he follows up on the performances and ensures that he does everything he can to help students improve academically. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. Through following his footsteps, I have been able to dedicate myself into studies and sports, which has helped me to achieve my goals.

In conclusion, good teachers are hard to find but when you find one, make the most out of them.

Types of Teachers

Old method teachers: the teachers found under this method adopt the rigid mode of impartation of knowledge. They control the class the way a king would rule over his subjects. Old method teachers are less concerned about the welfare of their learners, they are syllabus-oriented.

New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Attributes of a Teacher:

A standard teacher has all or most of the various characters imbedded in them:

• Compassionate
• Open-minded
• A good counselor
• Friendly and most importantly
• Approachable.

Attributes of My Favorite Teacher:

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

During my formative years, I have come across many teachers who have influenced my life for the better. Ms Kirti was my class educator as well and took participation in the daily activities with us as well. She was a strict instructor anyway extremely amusing and mind in nature. At the same time, she was extremely restrained and dependable. She did her work perfectly with the class at a perfect time without getting late. I liked her, particularly as she attempted simple approaches to show us beneficial things. We made the most of her class. She taught us English subject as well. She even made us giggle by telling heaps of jokes in the middle of when she taught. She likewise managed us exceptionally well amid any school or between school rivalry of the move, sports, scholastic, and so on. By training kids to interview their teachers, film them, and elicit their wisdom, Deepak Ramola is helping them gain valuable new skills and new appreciation for their elders.

At a primary school in northern India, the tables have been turned on the typical teacher-student dynamic. As a student sits across from her instructor, she gently asks, “Are you comfortable? It’s okay to be nervous.” She is conducting an interview for the Out of the Syllabus Project , an uplifting initiative that trains students to capture the wisdom of teachers and share it with everyone in their school.

Out of the Syllabus was launched in July 2018 by Deepak Ramola (watch his TED Talk: Everyone has a life lesson to share ), an educator and founder of Project FUEL (Forwardly Understanding Every Life Lesson). He wants to deepen connections by using teachers and their personal stories as tools for students to learn. “In schools and colleges, teachers have been reduced to a source of passing inspiration or as a vehicle rather than as the inspiration. I want to change that,” says Ramola. “I had some phenomenal teachers who helped me grow and learn.”

Collecting and sharing people’s life lessons is a passion of Ramola’s. His mother was a major source of inspiration. He explains, “She didn’t go to school, yet she knew so much. I remember questioning her, and her reply was ‘I have learned from life.’ And I thought if she’s learning from living, then that means everyone who is living is learning something.”

He began documenting people’s wisdom in 2009 as a hobby while he was a college student in Mumbai, and he expanded the idea into Project FUEL, an educational organization based in Dehradun, four years later. Its mission is to create a tangible, memorable experience from life lessons so other people can be inspired by them. For example, the population of Saur, a once-thriving village in northern India, had dwindled after many inhabitants migrated to live in cities. Ramola collected life lessons and folktales from the remaining villagers, and in 2017 he and his organization covered some of Saur’s abandoned buildings with words and pictures, sharing knowledge and lifting spirits.

The Out of the Syllabus project is Ramola’s way of transmitting his enthusiasm to schools. Here’s how it works: In a school, teachers select 10 to 20 students to participate in a Wisdom Club. These club members are trained by the Project FUEL team and by volunteer professionals in filmmaking, data documentation, interviewing, recording and design (the professionals also share the necessary equipment). Then, the students ask teachers about their life lessons while filming and photographing them. The process, according to Ramola, “provides the children with amazing new skills in film, research and the art of conversation. It also allows the teachers to be more honest and authentic with their students.”

Afterwards, the students design posters that capture the life lessons. The posters are framed and hung in school hallways in what Ramola calls “wisdom corridors” so that the lessons can be accessible to everyone. (Schools that have resources pay minimal fees to Project FUEL to cover the costs of filming, design, printing and framing; with under-resourced schools, Ramola’s team raises funds to help them.) “For me, the project celebrates the wisdom of teachers outside their curriculum, “ says Ramola. Instead of spotlighting educators for their abilities to explain chemistry or literature, they have a chance to be recognized for their humanity and their qualities and skills outside the classroom.

For the inaugural Out of the Syllabus Project, Ramola’s team collaborated with the Purkal Youth Development Society in Dehradun, a fee-free school that assists children from impoverished families. Watching the students — who weren’t accustomed to being in charge — film their teachers and work together was “phenomenal,” recalls Ramola. “Seeing that beautiful choreography of conversation and that dance of emotions happen between these two generations was moving and empowering for me.”

When the wisdom corridor is complete, the project enters its second phase. As Ramola explains, “The Wisdom Club students coach their classmates to do the same, to document life lessons from staff members, parents and visitors, and to share them using creative tools.” He and his team provide the students with monthly check-ins. “We support and guide them until they can take it up on their own,” Ramola says. “I’ve gotten messages from one of the teachers on Instagram explaining that students now come to them saying, ‘I read on the poster that you suffered from a drug problem, and I’m going through that. Can I speak to you?’”

So far, Out of the Syllabus has been brought to five schools in India, each with a distinctly different student body. “We’ve worked in all-girls government schools where the girls work and help support their parents. Then, we’ve been at a school with girls who come from economically sound backgrounds. Their passion to learn was the same, although their resources were different,” says Ramola. “The last school we did was a community nonprofit that serves children from slums. Imagine them getting to interview their teachers — and to be directors, cinematographers and designers all in one project and to be taken seriously in those roles.”

Ramola is full of anecdotes about the impact of their work. He says, “In one school, we had a girl who was very shy and would hardly talk. Interviewing a teacher was beyond her imagination.” Over the course of the project, he watched her gain confidence. He continues, “One day, she had to interview a teacher whom everyone dreaded. With shivering hands and voice, she faced her fears and managed to do it. After listening to her teacher’s story, she was so moved and said she understood why her teacher behaves the way she does. Seeing this girl find her voice and embrace empathy was one of the most meaningful outcomes of the project.”

Ramola shares an experience from another school. For her life lesson, “a teacher talked about a homeless person from her college days. She said that everyone, including the teacher, called him ‘crazy.’ One day she saw him with pieces from a broken glass bottle. She was afraid he might hurt himself, but she didn’t have the courage to stop him.” He ended up with cuts, and she went to him with cotton, bandages and antiseptic lotion. Ramola says, “She was very scared, but she felt it was her responsibility to help. He let her wash his wounds, and he was very quiet. When she told him he shouldn’t play with glass, he told her that he had been removing it because he knew dogs came to play in the corner and the glass could hurt them. The lesson that the teacher shared was you shouldn’t label people unless you know their side of the story.”

One student was immediately touched by the account; he told her he also labelled people as “crazy” or “mad.” He pledged from then on to listen and to help, and the other boys there did, too. Ramola finishes, “Witnessing that label get shattered in this powerful sharing was another fulfilling experience.”

Many schools have written to Project FUEL to get involved. There are nascent plans to bring Out of the Syllabus to other schools in India and beyond. He says, “We’re collaborating with a school in Antwerp, Belgium.” While he acknowledges the many difficulties posed by expanding, he strongly feels the benefits of sharing stories and creating strong teacher-student bonds will be more than worth the effort. Ramola says, “I believe that when you learn, you become a star, but when you teach, you become a constellation — not shining on your own but finding other stars, connecting with them and their stories, and becoming something much bigger and more meaningful.”

Though she’s had opportunities to leave the classroom in pursuit of other roles, Pierson doesn’t want to leave. “Students are who bring me joy. It is their ability to grow and learn on a daily basis that inspires me to continue to do what I do. Watching them try and fail and then succeed is a gift that I get to witness every day,” she says.

“I stay because of the students.”

Just a day in the life

Pierson, who co-teaches in a 50% special education, 50% regular education classroom, arrives at school between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. Before the bell rings at 8:05 a.m., Pierson meets with her partner teacher to discuss last-minute changes in order to meet all the diverse learning needs in their classroom. Sometimes she also has scheduled IEPs or staff meetings before the bell.

At 8:05 a.m., the kids arrive and it’s go time. After the students fill out their planners (a communication tool that goes home with them daily for parents to sign), some go with Pierson’s partner teacher to work on life skills while the rest use the next 10 minutes to work on typing skills. The rest of the day usually looks like this:

• Specials (PE, Music, Art, Science, Guidance, Technology)
• Reading Groups
• Whole Group Reading
• Lunch/Recess
• Social Studies/Science

That’s the plan on paper—but of course, effective teaching requires constant calibration. “We are constantly looking back on small assessments or measures to make sure they are mastering content and that we are truly giving students what they need,” Pierson says. “Not to mention, if I start a lesson and determine it doesn’t fit their needs, I have to be able to switch gears immediately and make a change on the spot.”

Pierson’s lunch is usually spent preparing for the rest of the day’s lessons or tomorrow’s lessons. Teachers have 20 minutes to eat, then 20 minutes to prep or head outside for recess duty, which Pierson has twice a week.

Aside from actual time spent in the classroom, Pierson also has staff meetings on Tuesdays, team meetings on Mondays, PLC meetings on Thursdays during planning and LLI (leveled literacy intervention) meetings Thursdays after school. Plus she has IEPs, parent meetings, BIT (building intervention team meetings) every other week, as well as professional development and trainings squeezed in wherever there is space.

At 3:05 p.m., the bell to leave rings and Pierson and her fellow educators get to work organizing tomorrow. “We determine how to structure the next day’s lessons based on data we collected,” she says.

It doesn’t stop when she goes home. “Most nights I also juggle phone calls from parents as I am trying to cook dinner for my own family answering questions regarding medication change and effects on behaviors, make-up work, questions about schoolwork, problems with friends, et cetera,” says Pierson. “Most weekends I spend one day working at school to catch up.”

More than just teaching

What many people don’t realize is that teaching is just one role teachers fill in the course of a normal day. “It’s not just academics that we worry about or can only focus on,” says Pierson.

Kids spend hours with their teachers every day, and (as any parent can attest) they need much more than just academic instruction. “Demands are placed on teachers to help students solve problems with peers that occur in the classroom and at recess,” says Pierson. “Help students find a coat, because it is 0 degrees and they didn’t come to school in a coat. Listen as students recount their night when Dad didn’t come home. Feed them when they are hungry.

“We are teachers, counselors, nurses, parents, mediators, custodians, cooks, friends, safe havens, disciplinarians and ‘future citizen’ creators.”

Staffing struggles

As they juggle these many and demanding roles, most teachers in America find themselves with little to no support in the classroom. With two certified teachers, a paraprofessional and a deaf educator in the room, Pierson’s classroom is unusual in its wealth of staff. “It allows us to really hone in on the learning needs of each group of kiddos and meet them where they are at,” she says. “Not every classroom has this luxury.”

If effective teaching is hard in well-staffed classrooms like Pierson’s, imagine what it must be like when you’re the sole adult in the room—tasked with educating, managing and, somewhere in the day, attempting to inspire a roomful of children.

Pierson recalls her time as a solo teacher, where it was more difficult to make sure group work remained on task. “I had to use vital instructional time to set my classroom up for success and practice the skills they would need to be independent on work when I was not with them,” she says. “I had to creatively design lessons that would help enforce a skill, but not be too difficult that they couldn’t figure it out without more instruction.”

Even in well-staffed classrooms, the demands are still taxing teachers to the limit. “There have been a number of polls suggesting that many teachers are at their breaking point and are planning to leave the profession,” says Gangone. “It is heartbreaking.”

Teaching for the test

Another struggle Pierson shares is the constant balance between teaching the material and teaching how to take a test. Though she strives to create lessons that allow her students to grow in problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity, she admits that it’s becoming more difficult.

“As much as I fight it, as much as it hurts me to say this, we are constantly preparing students to take a test at the end of the year that tells us if they have mastered everything they need to know for fourth grade,” she says. “A test that I truly don’t believe actually represents the skills or knowledge that my students have mastered. A test that doesn’t assess their problem-solving skills, creativity, communication skills or how they work with others.”

What teachers need most

I asked Pierson about her biggest need as a teacher, one thing that would help her do her job. Her answer was instant: “I need the gift of time, or something taken off my plate.”

However, more time is just one part of the bigger picture of support. “I also need parents, legislatures, administrators, school board members and the general public to trust me to do my job,” says Pierson. “Trust that I am the expert in my field, that every decision I make is in the best interest of the students I am teaching.

“As a professional it would be nice to be trusted.”

Pierson is quick to add that she doesn’t believe evaluations of educators should be eliminated. “Reflecting on my practice is something that helps me grow and that I need in order to stay on the cutting edge of my profession,” she says. “However, when people constantly criticize, degrade or insert their agendas into education, ultimately it prevents educators from doing their jobs and it is the students who suffer.”

Instead, communities should rally around their educators. “Write things in the paper that elevate the teacher’s voice, that showcase the amazing things educators are accomplishing,” she says. “And if you hear a rumor, instead of blindly spreading it, talk to an educator and most of them will candidly answer your concerns with reasons to back up their thinking.”

Gangone agrees: “We need to speak out for ensuring that teachers have the support they need, including adequate compensation and school funding.”

The future of teaching

The shortage of people entering the field of education predates the pandemic —which of course has only made things worse . Record numbers of teachers across the U.S. feel overworked and burned out, and every day, their students see it.

Though the life of a teacher is clearly challenging, Pierson has nothing but encouragement for young people considering education as a profession. “Do it!” she says. “I love learning more than I love teaching and, in this profession, you constantly have to keep learning. Be ready to fight for what you believe is right throughout your career.

But everywhere and at any time the success of a teacher is that they get only when their student reaches great heights in the right way.Hardwork is the key to being a good teacher. Every student's life has a teacher who serves as a support system. Since not all students have the same abilities, a teacher must teach in a way that a sufficient number of students can understand. They educate us about time management and its limitations.

Inspiration

When a child is questioned about what they want to be when they grow up. In addition to being a police officer, doctor, or lawyer, some of them will declare that teaching is their true calling. Therefore, a teacher is a person who many look up to and emulate.

Last but not least, teaching is a responsibility to mould the brains of many young people, not merely a way to make money. Teaching has always been considered a noble profession that requires great passion. Being a teacher in the Philippines is a far more interesting story to tell. The challenges abound and one’s passion can truly be tested, and if one prevails, a diamond in the rough emerges.

For the past three decades, Teacher Jacquelyn Rachel L. Tapdasan has spent most of her life teaching. Starting as a classroom teacher, Teacher Jacky always believes that teaching is not just a profession, but a personal calling.

“I’m passionate about teaching because I come from a family of teachers, and I’m surrounded with passionate people. Even if I have a son with special needs, I continue to teach and use this as an inspiration to help my learners grow and succeed,” Teacher Jacky shared.

In 2003, Teacher Jacky’s normal life as a classroom teacher changed when she accepted the challenge of being the Non-Formal Education (NFE) Coordinator in the District of Naga III in the province of Cebu. Being an NFE Coordinator meant that she would leave the comforts of teaching in a classroom to provide education to learners in far-flung areas inaccessible to formal basic education system. Every week, she traveled to Sitio Cabuan, which is 14 km from the town proper, to conduct basic literacy program (BLP) to out-of-school youth and adults.

Being an NFE Coordinator in Sitio Cabuan gave Teacher Jacky the chance to meet its resident. She coordinated with the barangay officials and looked for partners in implementing the life skills trainings such as basic dressmaking, manicure and pedicure, and welding and fabrication. Her efforts paved the way for non-formal education in the remotest sitio in Naga City.

In 2008, new opportunities opened for Teacher Jacky as the DepEd Division of Cebu City was established as an interim division for DepEd Cebu Province. This development provided an opportunity for Teacher Jacky to establish a formal school in Sitio Cabuan. She communicated her plan to the District Supervisor, who conveyed her proposal to the Schools Division Superintendent (SDS). The SDS approved the request to create a primary school in Sitio Cabuan, provided that Teacher Jacky would have 75 learners and would teach five days a week. For the love of teaching, she accepted the challenge even if she knew it would be tough and would take a big toll on her personal life.

On June 29, 2009, Teacher Jacky started teaching 76 learners from Grades 1-4 and pursued the creation of Cirilo P. Selgas Primary School. Classes were conducted in the chapel for Grades 1 and 2, and in makeshift tent outside the chapel for Grades 3 and 4. Her dedication has moved the hearts of the people in the community.

In times of challenges and struggles, Teacher Jacky never gives up. She keeps the passion burning. She always reminds herself of the proverb, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.”

At present, Teacher Jacky serves as the District Alternative Learning System (ALS) Coordinator of Naga III. Every week, she travels to four community learning centers (CLCs) to meet her students. She has been in ALS for 16 years.

Her story is written to remind and inspire people to never give up in helping those  in need and to continue to touch hearts, nurture minds, and transform the lives of the young learners.

“The best part of teaching is seeing my students grow and to make a difference in the life of my learners,” Teacher Jacky concluded.

The Life of a Teacher

A teacher, who holds the title of educator, is a person who aids pupils in gaining knowledge, skill, or virtue via the process of instruction. Indeed, teachers play a crucial role in society as educators form the foundation of civilization. They serve as mentors for young people, provide direction and commitment, and empower them via education. Teachers enable nations to further their social and economic development. All in all, teachers in many countries are highly underpaid, and their profession is undermined. They are often related to being Low-income residents because their salaries are often lower than those of other professions, and they typically have a lower standard of living than other professions. They often stretch their budgets to pay for basic needs and make difficult financial decisions. Teachers are, therefore, often unable to access the same housing opportunities as their higher-income counterparts due to a lack of access to capital and credit, among other issues. Sometimes the teachers may need more proper financial resources to afford the rent or down payment necessary to move into a better neighborhood. Due to their salaries, teachers have limited access to housing in desirable neighborhoods and thus need help accessing quality housing. Teachers have not only chosen to live in low-resident areas as tenants because of their salaries but also because of others factors such as access to public transportation, Proximity to work, and community benefits, as discussed below. The main purpose of this essay is to show how the social positions of teachers as low-income residents affect their housing-related choices.

In the past, teachers were thought to be high profiles in terms of payment; thus, many Children generally had positive perceptions of teachers, viewing them as important role models and mentors. They tended to view teachers as people who positively impacted their lives and worked hard to ensure their success. However, when it was later revealed what the teachers earn in terms of teacher salaries and living conditions, the children’s perceptions became quite different. Nowadays, many children understand that teachers often do not make enough money to live comfortably and may struggle to pay their bills. They may also be aware of teachers’ long hours and difficult working conditions. With this, teachers’ living conditions are dictated by their salaries. Many teachers choose to live in areas with a low cost of living as it allows them to stretch their salary further and make ends meet. Teachers in low-income neighborhoods often have the added benefit of providing access to resources such as libraries, parks, and community centers. A low-cost residence often provides access to public transportation, which can be especially helpful for those who lack a car or need to travel to their job; this, in the term, helps the teachers save on cost and time. Another advantage is that it may be more secure for the teachers living in a low-income area than other locations, as there may be less crime and better community watch programs. It is not by will that teachers opt to live in low residential areas, but all these results from their low wages. Sometimes under critical conditions, the teachers are forced to evacuate from their rental areas due to their inability to afford the rentals. Evacuation of the teachers from their residential area due to the inability to pay rent is quite a disadvantage as it inconveniences the teachers in terms of salary management and looking for another better place.

The decisions/branches that explain that teacher’s social location and the barriers associated with poverty are evident in larger patterns. They include; Geographic Location of the Teacher: The geographic location of a teacher can have a major impact on their living conditions. For example, research has found that teachers who live in rural or low-income areas are more likely to experience poverty-related barriers, such as inadequate housing, lack of access to health care, and limited economic opportunities (Gudmundsdottir et al., 2018). Another case is the teacher’s Social Location. Teachers generally occupy a lower social class position, which can be seen through their lower salaries and living conditions. This can be evidenced by the fact that, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, the median salary for a teacher in the United States is $58,950 (2019). This amount is significantly lower than the national median salary of $60,293 for all occupations (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019). Moreover, teachers often live-in areas of urban poverty due to the lower wages, which can contribute to the poor living conditions

A teacher’s education level can also play a role in their living conditions. Studies have found that teachers with higher levels of education are more likely to have access to better job opportunities, higher salaries, and more job security, which can help them to afford better housing, healthcare, and other necessities (Gudmundsdottir et al., 2018).

Access to resources can also affect the living conditions of teachers. Research has found that teachers in low-income areas often lack access to basic resources, such as health care, housing, and transportation, making it difficult for them to afford necessities (Howard et al., 2019). Additionally, teachers in low-income areas may not have access to the same educational resources as those in higher-income areas, making it difficult for them to provide quality education to their students (Gudmundsdottir et al., 2018).

When eviction occurs in rental houses, for instance, by the teacher, the following is a full linear story of finding a rental property or trying to keep it, including the following steps. Finding a Rental Property: The first step in finding a rental property is to decide where you want to live. Consider things such as commute times, schools, and local amenities. Once you have narrowed your choices, start researching rental properties in those areas. Look online for listings, check with real estate agents, and ask friends and family for referrals. Once you have found a few potential rental properties, contact the landlord or property manager to arrange a viewing. Make sure to be prepared with questions and to take notes during the showing. When deciding on a rental property, consider factors such as size, layout, condition, and features. Pay attention to the rental agreement and any additional fees or charges that may apply. Ask questions and ensure that one understands everything before signing the agreement.

Keeping the Rental Property: Once you have signed the rental agreement, it is important to focus on keeping the property for the duration of the lease. Start by complying with the terms of the agreement, such as paying rent on time and taking care of the property. Be sure to keep up with maintenance and repair any damaged items as soon as possible.

Signing the lease: one has to sign a lease agreement to rent the property officially. The tenants then read the agreement carefully and signed it.

Moving In: when one moves into the property and they are happy with it. They begin to settle in and make the property now their own.

Keeping Up with Payments: one sets up an automatic payment system to ensure he stays on top of his monthly rent payments.

Maintaining the property: this is done to take care of the property and ensure it is in good condition. One should repair any damages and does regular maintenance.

Staying on Good Terms with the Landlord: Makes sure he is courteous and respectful to the landlord to maintain a good relationship with them. Another process is Renewing the Lease: When the lease ends, the tenant should always renew it so that he can continue to stay in the property.

After the due process is done, moving out is now considered. When one wants to move out of the rental property, then his landlord gives the proper notice and moves out.

The social process and structures that shape poverty and eviction significantly impact teachers and their choices regarding housing and employment. In many communities, poverty and eviction result from structural inequality, where certain groups are denied access to certain resources and opportunities. This can lead to teachers having limited access to affordable housing and employment opportunities, leading to further cycles of poverty and eviction. The increasing cost of living in many cities has also made it difficult for teachers to find job opportunities that pay a living wage. This has resulted in many teachers working multiple jobs and living in overcrowded situations. Low wages and high housing costs have forced many teachers to live in substandard housing or to take on additional debt to cover their rent. This can create a cycle of poverty and eviction that is difficult to escape. In addition, teachers facing poverty and eviction can find themselves with limited access to resources to help them cope with their situation. Many teachers may not access legal assistance, financial aid, or other resources to help them secure affordable housing and employment. This can make it even more difficult for teachers to break out of the cycle of poverty and eviction. Overall, the social process and structures that shape poverty and eviction have significantly impacted teachers and their choices regarding housing and employment. These structural inequalities have led to limited resources and opportunities, making it difficult for teachers to find affordable housing and job opportunities that pay a living wage.

Two College of Education alumnae named top San Diego County teachers

High school teachers Maria Miller and Jennifer Ekstein both earned credentials and master’s degrees from SDSU’s School of Teacher Education.

In what is becoming an annual tradition, two San Diego State University College of Education alumnae have been named San Diego County Teachers of the Year. 

Maria Miller (’11, ’12) and Jennifer Ekstein (’98, ’99, ’03) will be among five educators featured on the “Cox Presents: Salute to Teachers” television special, to be presented in September on the YurView network. Nine SDSU alumni have been honored by the San Diego County Office of Education since 2019. 

While Miller teaches language arts and Ekstein science, the two share a gift for making subject matter connect with students who are often marginalized in education. Here is a closer look at each teacher:

Making lessons land

For Maria Miller, teaching has been an unexpected second act to her career. 

After earning her bachelor’s degree from California State University San Marcos, Miller worked in customer service and training at Pacific Bell while raising a family. But witnessing her children’s challenging experiences in the education system gave her a new professional purpose.

“I wanted to make sure that my son and my daughter had the best education,” Miller recalled. “And I wanted to make sure that other people's children had the best education, too.” 

That meant enrolling at SDSU where she earned a teaching credential in 2011 and then a master’s degree in teaching in 2012. 

“I always praise San Diego State because I think that the instructors were relevant and were all willing to give realistic feedback,” Miller said, who said she was particularly influenced by Professor Emeritus Alberto Ochoa and a course he taught on multilingual learners.

Now at Morse High — a diverse, urban school in San Diego’s Skyline Hills neighborhood — Miller puts those lessons to good use. And she couldn’t be happier with where the journey has taken her.

“I'm tired at the end of each day,” Miller said, “But it's a good kind of tired.”

At Morse, Miller teaches 10th and 11th grade English language arts class. The secret to her success is encouraging active participation — think presentations, not worksheets — and finding lessons that land with her students. A big part of that is finding novels that speak to their cultures and lived experiences. 

“The students have to see themselves,” Miller said. “Whether it's the author, whether it's the characters in the book, right? The story matters.”

On her class reading list is “Patron Saints of Nothing,” a coming-of-age story by Randy Ribay about a Filipino American teenager. Another selection is Adib Khorram’s “Darius the Great is Not Okay,” which tackles issues of teenage mental health and cultural identity. And when her class read the Lorraine Hansberry play “A Raisin in the Sun,” Miller made sure to pair it with a lesson about the history of redlining and other discriminatory housing practices in their own community.

Reflecting on being named Teacher of the Year, Miller also connects the honor back to her students.

“It means a great deal,” she said. “One of the reasons I teach here is because I want to be a role model. I want students to see people that look like them and know that they can do this.”

Seeing students differently

Jennifer Ekstein was fresh off earning her credential from SDSU’s School of Teacher Education in 1999 when she found herself teaching a life sciences course at Bonita Vista High in Chula Vista. At the time, the class was considered “lower-tracked” — referring to the practice of grouping students by achievement.

It was the kind of assignment that many senior teachers steered away from. Ekstein embraced the opportunity. 

“I saw these students differently,” she recalled. “They had an unwavering potential to grow, learn and have success.”

Some 25 years later, Ekstein is still making a difference for students at Bonita Vista — and doing so with flair. As a teacher of biology, environmental science and environmental systems and societies, she makes lessons engaging through song, dance and even costumes. 

She is also a champion of her students’ well-being through social and emotional learning activities and by founding the school’s Culture and Climate Committee, which encourages inclusion and kindness.

Ekstein is a triple alumna for SDSU, earning a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and biology, a teaching credential and a master’s in secondary education with an emphasis in science for curriculum and instruction. She thrived under the tutelage of Donna Ross, associate professor of science education, as well as Randy Yerrick, a former SDSU professor who is now dean of the Kremen School for Education and Human Development at Fresno State.

“My masters program helped me develop the skills and tools I needed to be a champion and advocate for these students especially in the area of scientific talk,” said Ekstein, who co-authored a journal article with Yerrick on teaching lower track science students. 

“I learned that this equitable approach allowed my students to make sense of scientific phenomena and engage more successfully in science and engineering practices.”

In 'consent,' an author asks: 'me too did i have the agency to consent'.

In 1996, novelist Jill Ciment published a memoir called Half a Life. It is primarily about her hardscrabble childhood in California's San Fernando Valley, dominated by her difficult, volatile father, whom Ciment realized in hindsight was autistic. But about halfway through, Ciment's life takes a turn, when at 16, she signs up for figure drawing classes, which she pays for with earnings from a part-time job. She develops a crush on the teacher, a married artist 30 years her senior named Arnold Mesches. Within a year, they are having an affair. Or, as she puts it, "Arnold was having an affair. I was going steady."

That relationship is the subject of Ciment's follow-up memoir, Consent. Half a Life was written when she was in her 40s and Arnold (as she refers to him) was in his 70s -- at which point they had been married for more than 25 years. Now, eight years after his death at 93, she reconsiders their relationship in light of the #MeToo movement .

Her remarkable new book -- at once forthright, thoughtful, and moving -- broaches many questions: "Does a story's ending excuse its beginning?" "Can a love that starts with such an asymmetrical balance of power ever right itself?" "How do I convey yearning for a kiss while at the same time acknowledge the predatory act of an older man kissing a teenager?"

You don't have to read Half a Life to appreciate Consent . In fact, the second memoir , which both scrutinizes and amplifies what Ciment first wrote about her relationship with Arnold, is a far more interesting book.

She describes their first kiss differently in the two memoirs. In the earlier version, she initiated the kiss and Arnold kissed her back, but then stopped himself and said, "Sweetheart, I can't sleep with you. I'd like to, but I can't...It wouldn't be fair to you." In the new book, he draws her to him and kisses her, and "I fervently kissed him back."

The age of consent in California is 18. Had Arnold groomed her with extra attention in class, or with furtive glances down her blouse? What about whispering to her, "I wish you were older"? Her reply in both books: "I'm old enough."

"Me too?" she wonders now. "Did I have the agency to consent?"

Arnold read and discussed the first memoir with her -- commenting, for example, that he would never have called a student "sweetheart." But he was not alive to respond to Consent, and Ciment tries to imagine his reactions.

She questions her earlier assertion that she would never love anyone more than Arnold: "Could I have felt so sure of my love at 17 that I knew nothing would surpass it? Or was my 45-year-old self, in the middle of the marriage and the memoir, trying to burnish the story with love lest it read like a reenactment of Humbert Humbert and Lolita's cross-country road trip?" Was she protecting Arnold , even though the statute of limitations had long passed?

In a particularly astute passage, Ciment highlights how language reflects changing social attitudes and colors our views -- which makes it difficult to judge past behavior by today's moral codes:

"If Arnold kissed me first, should I refer to him in the language of today -- sexual offender, transgressor, abuser of power? Or do I refer to him in the language of the late 90s, when my 45-year-old self wrote the scene? The president at that time was Clinton, and the blue dress was in the news. Men who preyed on younger women were called letches, cradle-robbers, dogs. Or do I refer to him in the language of 1970, at the apex of the sexual revolution, when the kiss took place -- Casanova, silver fox?"

Time also alters the words that might be used to describe teenaged Ciment: a victim or survivor in today's parlance, a bimbo or vixen in the 90s, a cool chick in the 70s.

It turns out there was plenty Ciment omitted in Half a Life , including uncomfortable details like the fact that Arnold had not just a wife but another longstanding mistress when they first got together. And that, ever the teacher, he instructed her on sexual techniques and helped her prepare a portfolio of explicit sexual drawings from the female point of view for her application to CalArts school.

These early elisions provide a pointed reminder that all writing is selective, and memoirs are certainly no exception.

Ciment's frankness extends to the disadvantages of being a much younger wife, including Arnold's inevitable physical diminution, the constant specter of loss, and -- more amusingly -- being asked how much she's paid to take care of the old man dozing on a park bench beside her. You don't have to be a Freudian to note that in Arnold, who was the same age as her father, Ciment found an attentive paternal figure who "showed me who I might become."

But Consent -- whose working title was The Other Half -- makes clear that she found much more. Their "half century of intimacy" included physical and mental stimulation, companionship, power shifts, financial worries, successful creative careers, illnesses, and, through it all, artistic collaborations in which "he was my first audience, as I was his first viewer."

Despite their many conversations about the subject, they never reached a firm consensus about who initiated that first kiss. No such uncertainty exists about their heartbreaking last one. This is a book poised to fuel plenty of discussion.
