#2. Put Contact Information in the Header

As with a resume, it’s important to start your cover letter with your contact details at the top. These should be in your cover letter’s header, separated neatly from the bulk of your text.

Here, you want to include all the essential contact information , including:

  • Full Name. Your first and last name should stand out at the top.
  • Job Title. Match the professional title underneath your name to the exact job title of the position you’re applying for. Hiring managers often hire for several roles at once, so giving them this cue about what role you’re after helps things go smoother.
  • Email Address. Always use a professional and easy-to-spell email address. Ideally, it should combine your first and last names.
  • Phone Number. Add a number where the hiring manager can easily reach you.
  • Location. Add your city and state/country, no need for more details.
  • Relevant Links (optional). You can add links to websites or social media profiles that are relevant to your field. Examples include a LinkedIn profile , Github, or an online portfolio.

Then it’s time to add the recipient’s contact details, such as:

  • Hiring Manager's Name. If you can find the name of the hiring manager, add it.
  • Hiring Manager's Title. While there’s no harm in writing “hiring manager,” if they’re the head of the department, we recommend you use that title accordingly.
  • Company Name. Make sure to write the name of the company you're applying to.
  • Location. The city and state/country are usually enough information here, too.
  • Date of Writing (Optional). You can include the date you wrote your cover letter for an extra professional touch.

Once you’ve properly listed all the contact information, it’s time to start writing the content of the cover letter.

The first thing you need to do here is to address your cover letter directly to the hiring manager.

In fact, you want to address the hiring manager personally .

Forget the old “Dear Sir or Madam” or the impersonal “To Whom It May Concern.” You want to give your future boss a good impression and show them that you did your research before sending in your application.

So, how do you find out who’s the hiring manager?

First, check the job ad. The hiring manager’s name might be listed somewhere in it.

If that doesn’t work, check the company’s LinkedIn page. You just need to look up the head of the relevant department you’re applying to, and you’re all set.

For example, if you’re applying for the position of Communication Specialist at Novorésumé. The hiring manager is probably the Head of Communications or the Chief Communications Officer.

Here’s what you should look for on LinkedIn:

And there you go! You have your hiring manager.

But let’s say you’re applying for a position as a server . In that case, you’d be looking for the “restaurant manager” or “food and beverage manager.”

If the results don’t come up with anything, try checking out the “Team” page on the company website; there’s a good chance you’ll at least find the right person there.

Make sure to address them as Mr. or Ms., followed by their last name. If you’re not sure about their gender or marital status, you can just stick to their full name, like so:

But what if you still can’t find the hiring manager’s name, no matter where you look?

No worries. You can direct your cover letter to the company, department, or team as a whole, or just skip the hiring manager’s name.

#4. Write an Eye-Catching Introduction

First impressions matter, especially when it comes to your job search.

Hiring managers get hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of applications. Chances are, they’re not going to be reading every single cover letter end-to-end.

So, it’s essential to catch their attention from the very first paragraph.

The biggest problem with most opening paragraphs is that they’re usually extremely generic. Here’s an example:

  • My name is Jonathan, and I’d like to work as a Sales Manager at XYZ Inc. I’ve worked as a Sales Manager at MadeUpCompany Inc. for 5+ years, so I believe that I’d be a good fit for the position.

See the issue here? This opening paragraph doesn’t say anything except the fact that you’ve worked the job before.

And do you know who else has similar work experience? All the other applicants you’re competing with.

Instead, you want to start with some of your top achievements to grab the reader’s attention. And to get the point across, the achievements should be as relevant as possible to the position.

Your opening paragraph should also show the hiring manager a bit about why you want this specific job. For example, mention how the job relates to your plans for the future or how it can help you grow professionally. This will show the hiring manager that you’re not just applying left and right—you’re actually enthusiastic about getting this particular role.

Now, let’s make our previous example shine:

Dear Mr. Smith,

My name’s Michael, and I’d like to help XYZ Inc. hit and exceed its sales goals as a Sales Manager. I’ve worked as a Sales Representative with Company X, another fin-tech company , for 3+ years, where I generated an average of $30,000+ in sales per month and beat the KPIs by around 40%. I believe that my previous industry experience, passion for finance , and excellence in sales make me the right candidate for the job.

The second candidate starts with what they can do for the company in the future and immediately lists an impressive and relevant achievement. Since they’re experienced in the same industry and interested in finance, the hiring manager can see they’re not just a random applicant.

From this introduction, it’s safe to say that the hiring manager would read the rest of this candidate’s cover letter.

#5. Use the Cover Letter Body for Details

The next part of your cover letter is where you can go into detail about what sets you apart as a qualified candidate for the job.

The main thing you need to remember here is that you shouldn’t make it all about yourself . Your cover letter is supposed to show the hiring manager how you relate to the job and the company you’re applying to.

No matter how cool you make yourself sound in your cover letter, if you don’t tailor it to match what the hiring manager is looking for, you’re not getting an interview.

To get this right, use the job ad as a reference when writing your cover letter. Make sure to highlight skills and achievements that match the job requirements, and you’re good to go.

Since this part of your cover letter is by far the longest, you should split it into at least two paragraphs.

Here’s what each paragraph should cover:

Explain Why You’re the Perfect Candidate for the Role

Before you can show the hiring manager that you’re exactly what they’ve been looking for, you need to know what it is they’re looking for.

Start by doing a bit of research. Learn what the most important skills and responsibilities of the role are according to the job ad, and focus on any relevant experience you have that matches them.

For example, if you’re applying for the position of a Facebook Advertiser. The top requirements on the job ad are:

  • Experience managing a Facebook ad budget of $10,000+ / month
  • Some skills in advertising on other platforms (Google Search + Twitter)
  • Excellent copywriting skills

So, in the body of your cover letter, you need to show how you meet these requirements. Here’s an example of what that can look like:

In my previous role as a Facebook Marketing Expert at XYZ Inc. I handled customer acquisition through ads, managing a monthly Facebook ad budget of $40,000+ . As the sole digital marketer at the company, I managed the ad creation and management process end-to-end. I created the ad copy and images, picked the targeting, ran optimization trials, and so on.

Other than Facebook advertising, I’ve also delved into other online PPC channels, including:

Explain Why You’re a Good Fit for the Company

As skilled and experienced as you may be, that’s not all the hiring manager is looking for.

They also want someone who’s a good fit for their company and who actually wants to work there.

Employees who don’t fit in with the company culture are likely to quit sooner or later. This ends up costing the company a ton of money, up to 50% of the employee’s annual salary , so hiring managers vet candidates very carefully to avoid this scenario.

So, you have to convince the hiring manager that you’re passionate about working with them.

Start by doing some research about the company. You want to know things like:

  • What’s the company’s business model?
  • What’s the company’s product or service? Have you used it?
  • What’s the company’s culture like?

Chances are, you’ll find all the information you need either on the company website or on job-search websites like Jobscan or Glassdoor.

Then, pick your favorite thing about the company and talk about it in your cover letter.

But don’t just describe the company in its own words just to flatter them. Be super specific—the hiring manager can see through any fluff.

For example, if you’re passionate about their product and you like the company’s culture of innovation and independent work model, you can write something like:

I’ve personally used the XYZ Smartphone, and I believe that it’s the most innovative tech I’ve used in years. The features, such as Made-Up-Feature #1 and Made-Up-Feature #2, were real game changers for the device.

So, make sure to do your fair share of research and come up with good reasons why you're applying to that specific company.

#6. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Finally, it’s time to conclude your cover letter.

In the final paragraph, you want to:

  • Wrap up any points you couldn't make in the previous paragraphs. Do you have anything left to say? If there’s any other information that could help the hiring manager make their decision, mention it here. If not, just recap your key selling points so far, such as key skills and expertise.
  • Express gratitude. Politely thanking the hiring manager for their time is always a good idea.
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action. The very last sentence in your cover letter should be a call to action. This means you should ask the hiring manager to do something, like call you and discuss your application or arrange an interview.
  • Remember to sign your cover letter. Just add a formal closing line and sign your name at the bottom.

At least that’s the approximate consensus we came to based on research and input from a few experts who have worked as hiring managers, recruiters, or both.

If this feels short, “Keep in mind that the cover letter is not a tell-all of everything you've done,” says Muse coach Emily Liou , a recruiter and HR professional. “You just want enough to position yourself as a fit and to pique the curiosity of the reader.” You don’t need pages and pages to do that.

In a survey of 205 HR professionals, ResumeLab found that 42% of respondents preferred cover letters between half and one page and 40% preferred cover letters that were less than half a page. Only 18% said they preferred cover letters longer than one page. Muse coach Steven Davis , a technical recruiter, advocates for a cover letter that “can be comfortably read in less than a minute.”

How do you write a cover letter that's just the right length?

Here are a few tips that'll get your cover letter to the ideal length:

1. Pay attention to your structure.

You may remember the five-paragraph essay from school: introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraph. Cover letters are structured similarly.

Basically, you should lay out your cover letter like this:

  • Introduction (one paragraph): Your cover letter opening should be original and creative to draw your reader in. It should show your connections to the employer and your interest and excitement for the position, Liou says. You might also use this paragraph to explain that you’re making a career pivot or re-entering the workforce after an employment gap .
  • Body (one to three paragraphs): Your body paragraphs should focus on the ways you can help the organization or team, Owens says. Talk about what skills and experience you bring to the company, and back up what you’re saying with past examples—but keep them concise.
  • Conclusion (one paragraph): Your conclusion should be “a final paragraph thanking the reader for their time and reiterating your interest,” Owens says.

2. Figure out what matters to the employer.

“This is a great time to dissect what is most important to this position,” Liou says, so you can focus your cover letter on what your prospective employer cares about most. Go back to the job description and read it thoroughly. What’s listed first and what’s repeated? From there, Davis says, you should be able to identify the top skills and experiences they’re looking for.

Then, think about what in your background most exemplifies these qualifications—with an emphasis on situations where you’ve made an impact for your past employers, Liou says. These are the experiences you should recount in your cover letter.

3. Use concise examples to pique your readers’ interest.

Davis suggests using the “the STAR format without any details to create curiosity and motivate the interviewer to review the resume.” If you’re unfamiliar, the STAR method is a way of telling stories in an interview where you make sure that you hit on the situation, task, action, and result of the experience you’re recounting. Using a compact version of the STAR method in your cover letter will help show the impact you’ve had in past roles and how without adding too much length. So you might write something like:

“When my last company redesigned their website, I took the lead on layout, and by working as a constant liaison between our product team and our users, I helped produce a website that our users found 50% more intuitive and drew 33% more repeat users.”

4. Go beyond your resume—without regurgitating it.

“The cover letter should be a supplemental piece to your resume, not a summary,” Owens says. So don’t waste space regurgitating other parts of your application. “Use the cover letter to tell the employer what you want them to know about you that’s not on your resume,” or anywhere else, Owens says.

Focus your precious page or less on highlighting your relevant achievements and explicitly connecting your resume to the position. Don’t worry about including all of the context and details about your past jobs. For anything you talk about in a cover letter, your resume can “continue your narrative—filling in the remaining details of the where, when, and what of your work experiences and history,” Owens says.

5. Consider using bullet points.

And we don’t mean repeating your resume bullet points . We mean using a few bullet points to concisely relay a few key pieces of information that aren’t on your resume, but contribute to your qualifications as a candidate, without taking up too much space.

For example, Owens says you might create a “What I bring to the table” section with three to four bullet points (one or two sentences each). In a section like this, you can touch on a few more disparate topics such as your management or leadership style, pain points you can help your next employer with, or work environments you have experience thriving in, Owens says.

6. Use standard formatting.

Did you ever make your font size a bit larger or choose a slightly wider font to hit a page count on an essay for school? What about widening those margins? Did you ever do the opposite to slip in under a page maximum without having to do another editing pass at 3 a.m.? (Guilty!)

These tactics won’t fly for your cover letter (or your resume for that matter). Instead, stick to standard, easy-to-read formatting. Generally this means:

  • Common fonts like Arial, Helvetica, or Times New Roman
  • Font sizes between 10 and 12 point
  • Margin sizes of about one inch on the top, bottom, and sides
  • Lines that are single spaced (1.15 max) with an additional space between paragraphs if you'd like.

Don’t make your cover letter harder to read by cramming as much onto a page as possible. Also keep in mind that your cover letter often passes through the same applicant tracking system (ATS) that your resume does—so any flashy formatting could trip up the software that parses your application materials.

7. Trim the excess.

If your cover letter is still too long, take another look and trim out anything extra that doesn’t need to be there. Some things to cut include:

  • Content about how much you’d enjoy doing the work, Davis says—beyond what you need to express enthusiasm.
  • Mentions of years of experience: While the job description may call for three years of experience with a CRM (customer relationship management) program, you don’t need to use your cover letter to write a word problem where your six months experience from one internship, three months each from two classes, and two years at your last job equals three years.
  • Extra details in your examples, especially those that are found on your resume or don’t contribute to your strength as a candidate
  • Filtering language: This includes phrases like “I think” and “I feel.” You don’t “believe you can help” a company solve a problem, you can help a company solve a problem.
  • Overused or cliché phrases
  • Anything about what the job would do for you : Focus on what you can do for them.

8. Follow any instructions in the job description.

Finally, all of the above are just guidelines. The best indicator of what an employer is looking for in a cover letter—length-wise or otherwise—is the employer itself.

So if a job posting tells you that a cover letter should be a different length than we’ve indicated, default to the job description. If a job posting tells you that a cover letter should include different things than we’ve indicated, default to the job description. If a job posting tells you that you shouldn’t include a cover letter at all, default to the job description.

The little-known truth about cover letters is: You do NOT always need to include a cover letter when applying for jobs, and you may be wasting hours sending cover letters that employers won’t read.

So if you’re wondering whether you should always submit a cover letter with your job application and resume, then keep reading.

After working for years as a recruiter , I’m going to share the exact situations where you should provide a cover letter and the situations where it’s not needed.

Should You Always Submit a Cover Letter?

Many people on LinkedIn and other sites will tell you that you should include a cover letter every time because it “can’t hurt,” but that’s not true…

Here’s how it CAN hurt you…

Writing a great cover letter takes a LOT of time and mental energy. So if it’s not making a difference, or not even getting read, then it  is hurting you in terms of wasted time and energy (I’d argue that writing a cover letter is the toughest and most time-consuming part of the process for many job seekers).

How important is a cover letter

Writing a resume is tough, sure. But once you get it, you’re done. You spend 5-15 minutes tailoring it for each specific job you apply for, but that’s it.

Cover letters take a lot of time EVERY time (at least when done right).

That’s why it’s important to look at how important a cover letter is, and which situations it’s necessary and truly beneficial in.

3 Situations Where You Need to Send a Cover Letter:

There are a couple of specific scenarios where cover letters are necessary, and you should send one. This article by Harvard Business Review says it best:

In those cases, according to Harvard Business Review, you can boost your chances of getting the interview by writing a short letter to point out similarities between your resume and the job requirements (e.g. why you’d do well in their job )… rather than leaving the analysis entirely up to the hiring manager.

But this is only worth doing if you meet one or more of the criteria above, or a few other situations I’ll explain below…

Two more cases where you may want to include a cover letter:

First, you should send a cover letter if an employer specifically says it’s required on their website or job application form (however, having an optional field to include it is not the same as asking for it or saying it’s required).

And second, you should send a letter if you have a large gap in employment or something unusual in your background that you feel the need to explain, and you don’t feel your resume explains it well enough on its own.

(Although I do like addressing gaps in employment directly on your resume employment history section when possible. For example, if you took a year off to raise a kid, you could say: “2018-2019: One-year break from work to raise first child.” So do try to explain this type of thing on your resume if you can!)

When You Don’t Need a Cover Letter:

If you don’t fall into any of the situations we looked at above, then a cover letter is not needed.

For example, if you’re just applying for jobs online via job boards , via LinkedIn, on company websites via their “careers” page, etc., then I’d skip it! Send your resume and let it speak for itself. (And if you don’t have a great resume yet, you can get help  here. )

In my opinion, the extra time and effort just isn’t worth it when you’re applying online with no prior relationship, no referral, and no special knowledge of the hiring manager or job requirements that you can use to make your case for why they should interview you.

This is one reason I love LinkedIn EasyApply as a part of an online job search – because a cover letter is not required or even expected.

Of course, the final judgment call is yours!

If you’re applying to your dream employer and you don’t mind spending an hour writing up a great cover letter, then go ahead! It can’t hurt in a one-off scenario like this.

But the main point I’m trying to make here is:

You should be selective about when to send a cover letter, rather than feeling obligated to send it by default.

Recap: How Important is a Cover Letter?

The answer to how important a cover letter is depends on the hiring process and situation. If you read the information above, you now know when a cover letter is necessary/recommended, and when you probably shouldn’t bother.

And you’ve seen that cover letters do matter in some cases, but that doesn’t mean that you always need to send a cover letter.

And as mentioned earlier, the main benefit of this approach is time savings…

When you look at how much time and effort goes into writing each of these letters, it can add up to hours or days of wasted time if you’re sending cover letters without analyzing whether it’s necessary for the situation.

Tips for Writing a Good Cover Letter:

Now that we’ve answered whether a cover letter is necessary, and when it’s important, here are some tips and resources to help you in situations where you decide a cover letter is needed:

First, I’d always recommend keeping it brief, easy to read (no huge paragraphs or blocks of text without spacing), and personal.

It should feel like you’re talking directly to them! That means start with “Dear Bethany”, (for example), not with, “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Recruiter”.

(Recruiters almost never care about a cover letter anyway. It should be for the hiring manager).

Also, make sure you’re saying the word “you” at least as often as you say the word “I”. Talk about their needs and their company, not just about yourself .

The purpose of your cover letter is to point out similarities between your background and the employer’s job requirements. You want to demonstrate why you’re likely to succeed in their specific role, to sell them on interviewing you! And you cannot do this without researching their job and understanding/discussing their job. So this letter isn’t just about you , it’s about them just as much.

Seems like almost every other career blog advises you to always submit a cover letter. Too bad these folks don’t consider the most important asset we all have: time!

Would being graduated out of college for 1.5 years and haven’t “launched” your career yet – getting a job in the field you got a degree in – count as something “unusual on your background” that you would need a cover letter for?

Thanks for the kind words. I don’t think you’d need a cover letter for this. Just make sure to “tailor” your resume to show the most relevant pieces of the work you have done, and to show your relevant educational background/degree. But if you’re not getting results with your resume, then it’s worth testing/trying a cover letter. My guess is that it’s not needed, and perfecting your resume will get more interviews.

If I understand you correctly, is this an instance where you would recommend NOT using a chronological work history on a resume then?

And instead break up work experience history into a “relevant” and “other work experience” sections, since we’re trying to show specific relevant pieces of experience and educational background/degree?

I’d still keep it chronological. Just show the most relevant pieces of each past role, for the job you want now.

How about in my situation? I am looking for a job in marketing, but it has been five years and a few jobs since marketing has been the primary function of my job. My last few jobs have had a very little marketing focus and have been training, technical or sales in focus. Should I always write a cover letter to explain this when I am applying for marketing jobs?

The selection of Gov. Tim Walz as a Democratic vice presidential candidate could trigger a cascade of political leadership changes in Minnesota — if the newly minted ticket wins.

But it’s important to note at the outset that the timing of any Walz departure from the Minnesota governor’s office would dictate everything.

It wouldn’t be in his interest to give up the governor’s office until after the election results are known, because he can remain governor if he and Vice President Kamala Harris lose the presidential election in November.

Walz has two-plus years remaining on his second term. He hasn’t even said what would come after 2026, leaving the door open to another run for governor or something else. Minnesota doesn’t have term limits.

If he does resign, who will fill his spot in Minnesota?

Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a fellow Democrat, would become Minnesota’s next governor under succession steps laid out in the Minnesota Constitution . Flanagan would be the first female governor in Minnesota and the first Native American woman to serve as governor in the country. She is a member of the White Earth Nation.

She would be the eighth lieutenant governor in Minnesota to climb the ladder. It last happened in 1976 when then-Gov. Wendell Anderson resigned his office to take the U.S. Senate seat opened by Walter Mondale’s impending ascension to the vice presidency. Rudy Perpich moved up.

In 1943, Lt. Gov. Edward Thye became governor upon the resignation of Gov. Harold Stassen.

Two other resignations in the 1800s resulted in a political promotion as well.

Three times in Minnesota’s history, a governor’s death in office led to the lieutenant governor moving up, according to records kept by the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library .

Who becomes lieutenant governor?

Under the line of succession, the Minnesota Senate president moves up. 

This is where things get trickier and murkier. 

Currently, that’s four-term DFL Sen. Bobby Joe Champion of Minneapolis. But that doesn’t mean he’ll get the job.

It depends on a lot of factors, including which party controls the Senate when Walz submits his resignation.

The 67-member chamber is currently tied 33-33. Sen. Kelly Morrison, DFL-Deephaven, resigned her seat to run for Congress in Minnesota’s 3rd District. A special election in November will determine who wins the seat — and the Senate majority heading into the 2025 session.

If Democrats win the seat there could be stability in the Senate president’s chair. The party could also opt to elect a new president if Champion decided he didn’t want the lieutenant governor’s post; after all, he could always try to reclaim the Senate president post later given that a new one of those would be chosen next. 

Last month, Champion told reporters that he’s not yet considering what a climb up the political ranks might mean for him.

If Republicans win, upon the election certification of the new senator — as soon as mid-November — they could move to have that person sworn in to give the GOP a 34-33 edge.

When the Legislature reconvenes in mid-January, the party could put one of their own in the Senate president’s seat. 

Or GOP members could work a political angle, perhaps installing a swing-seat Democrat as president with the awareness that person would be tugged up the chain. That would open that elevated senator’s seat for another special election.

Is there a deadline for Walz to resign?

It would be largely up to him. He could resign soon after the election or wait a bit.

Walz would not be sworn in as vice president until Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, so conceivably he could keep the Minnesota post right up until then.

Given that the Legislature comes back on Jan. 14 for the next session, the musical chairs in the Senate could be settled soon after that and give Walz a clear picture of what would be in the rearview mirror.

How might it affect the state Senate’s operations?

The Senate would be down a member until that resulting special election is held. There is a possibility it could be done prior to the 2025 session, but also the possibility it wouldn’t occur until February or March.

That might mean a 33-33 party split for the opening weeks of a budget-year session. The state House majority, currently held by Democrats, is also at stake this November.

It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen problems generated by the ascendancy of a senator to the lieutenant governor post in Minnesota. In 2017, then Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to the U.S. Senate seat left open by Al Franken’s resignation.

Then-Senate President Michelle Fischbach, a Republican who now represents a vast swath of western Minnesota in Congress, moved up to the role of lieutenant governor. But Fischbach tried to maintain that she could serve as both Lieutenant Governor and Senate President. 

Democrats sued Fischbach twice. In the first lawsuit, a Ramsey County district judge ruled that the Senate had the duty to determine eligibility of its members and the case was dismissed . Democrats sued Fischbach again a few months later, but the case was dropped when the legislative session ended and Fischbach resigned from the Senate to accept an invitation to be Tim Pawlenty’s running mate in the governor’s race. They ultimately lost.

How coronary calcium scans assess heart attack risk

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States — and this holds true across gender and most racial and ethnic groups. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease and impacts blood supply to the heart muscle. Although an estimated 1 in 20 people age 20 and over are already living with the condition, many people don’t realize they have CAD until they experience a heart attack or stroke.

Though these odds may sound worrisome, there are ways to assess your risk of heart attack and stroke , and in some cases, even catch CAD before symptoms develop.

A coronary calcium scan — also referred to as a coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan or a heart CT calcium scan — is a simple, noninvasive test that not only screens for CAD but also helps determine your heart attack risk.

Below, Thomas C. Gerber, M.D., cardiologist with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and a professor of medicine and radiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, breaks down exactly how a coronary artery calcium scan works and what to expect from the assessment.

What is a coronary artery calcium scan?

A coronary calcium scan is a computerized tomography (CT) scan of the heart, says Dr. Gerber. “Because the heart moves constantly, these scans are done with specialized CT scanners that can ‘freeze’ the heart’s motion, allowing for a more accurate assessment of the heart’s condition.”

Though this sounds technical, the scan itself is short and painless. According to Dr. Gerber, there is no preparation on your part. There are no needles, and the scan does not cause any physical discomfort. “You will be asked to hold your breath and lie still, but the scan itself takes just a few seconds — the procedure will be over before you know it,” he says.

As the name implies, the purpose of the coronary calcium scan is to detect any calcium deposits in the arteries — also called the “coronary arteries” — that supply blood to the heart muscle.Cholesterol and other substances form artery-narrowing plaque in the arteries, and this builds up slowly over time. If the plaque grows big enough to reduce blood flow to the heart muscle, the resulting blockage can sometimes trigger a heart attack.

Assessing this calcium buildup is important because the more calcium that is present, the more plaque is likely to be present as well. And the more plaque you have, the higher your risk of coronary artery disease and heart attack, even if the plaque is not yet big enough to reduce blood flow to the heart muscle.

How coronary calcium scans determine heart attack risk

After the scan, specially trained technicians process the CT images and calculate your coronary artery calcium score. This number, sometimes called the Agatston score, estimates your heart attack risk .

“The CAC score is a measure of how much plaque there is in the coronary arteries,” says Dr. Gerber. “Put simply, the higher the CAC score, the more plaque is likely present. And the more plaque there is, the higher the risk of a serious heart attack over time.”

If you receive a score of zero, there was no calcium present in the scan and your risk of a heart attack is considered low for the near future. A score ranging from 100 to 300 indicates a moderate amount of calcium and suggests a relatively high risk of heart attack or other heart disease over 3 to 5 years. Finally, a score above 300 may indicate more extensive heart disease and a higher risk of heart attack.

“Remember that a coronary calcium scan, if needed, is just one of many factors that your healthcare team considers when helping you manage your cardiovascular risk,” says Dr. Gerber. In other words, having some calcium present does not automatically mean that a heart attack is inevitable.

“Coronary calcification becomes more common as people get older. For example, at age 70, approximately 70% of men have calcium present,” says Dr. Gerber. “Also, if you are a very active athlete, your CAC score may be higher than expected, but in this situation is not thought to indicate higher cardiovascular risk.”

Simply put, a coronary calcium scan is a risk assessment tool to help you and your healthcare team learn more about your heart health and determine what medication or lifestyle changes, if any, would benefit you. “Trust that your healthcare team will carefully explain to you what your CAC score means in your individual situation, and what should be done with the information,” says Dr. Gerber.

Who should get a coronary calcium scan?

Although a coronary calcium scan is an effective tool to diagnose CAD and assess the risk of heart attack, it’s not right for everyone.

According to Dr. Gerber, a coronary calcium scan is typically most helpful for people with an intermediate risk of heart attack or other cardiovascular issues. Your specific risk of heart attack or stroke is determined by a number of factors such as your age, sex and race, as well as clinical markers such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, ongoing tobacco use and diabetes diagnosis.

If your cardiovascular risk is considered either low or high, Dr. Gerber says the scan is rarely useful. Likewise, the scan is not recommended for people who have already had a heart attack or stroke, or those who have received coronary stents or heart bypass surgery. In any of these cases, your healthcare team will already know you have heart disease. “Remember that a coronary calcium scan is a screening test that is meant to discover previously unrecognized coronary disease,” says Dr. Gerber.

However, even if your cardiovascular risk is low, there are some special cases where a scan may be helpful. “For example, if you are a younger person with first-degree relatives, such as a parent or sibling, who had heart attacks or strokes younger than age 55 for men or age 65 for women, a coronary calcium scan is reasonable,” says Dr. Gerber.

Remember, heart disease is a treatable — and, in many cases, preventable — condition. Assessment tools like coronary calcium scans can help you and your healthcare team better understand your risk and assess how to best protect your heart health and lower the risk of heart attack.

After months perfecting your college admissions essays and submitting your applications, you finally receive your first school acceptance letters. Congratulations, getting into college is a huge achievement and the start of the next chapter of your life.

However, now you have to start thinking about how to pay for your education. Luckily, you probably won’t have to cover the full cost yourself. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 87% of first-time, full-time undergraduate students were awarded financial aid for the 2019-2020 school year, the last available data.

If you filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)  and the school approved your application, you likely received a financial aid award letter along with your acceptance notification. The financial aid award letter contains important information about the cost of attendance and your financial aid options.

However, each school has its own way of presenting its information, so it’s important to understand what’s typically included in a financial aid award letter. Here’s what to look for and what to do if you need more financial assistance.

What Is a Financial Aid Award Letter?

The financial aid award letter, also known as the student aid package or school offer, tells you what financial aid you can get at a particular school. The award letter is specific to that university or college, so you’ll receive a different letter from every school that accepts you as an incoming student.

Decoding Your Financial Aid Award Letter

The letter will include the annual total cost of attendance  and a list of financial aid options. Typically, your financial aid package  will be a mix of gift aid, meaning financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid, and loans, which you have to repay with interest.

What Your Award Letter Should Include

Your financial aid award letters will look different from school to school, but the U.S. Department of Education created the College Financing Plan  in an effort to encourage schools to make their award letters more streamlined and easily comparable. Most award letters have several elements in common:

  • Expected family contribution.  This portion of the award letter is the dollar amount that your family is expected to pay  toward education expenses based on the financial information provided in the FAFSA. The number helps determine how much financial aid you’ll likely need to cover costs.
  • Cost of attendance. The estimated cost of attendance may include tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation and other expenses for one year of classes. However, this number doesn’t include every expense you’ll encounter as a student.
  • Scholarship and grant options.  Most award letters include multiple types of awards. This section of the letter lists awards that do not require repayment and may include merit-based scholarships, need-based grants (institutional, state and Federal Pell), employer paid tuition benefits and other forms of “gift” aid.
  • Net costs. Next, the aid letter typically states the net cost of school—or the cost of attendance minus total grants and scholarships. This is the cost per year that must be paid out of pocket or covered by loans or other aid.
  • Loan and work options.  The bottom portion of your award letter will list available loan options—including the loan type, amount and interest rate. This section also indicates whether you qualify for federal work-study and, if so, how much you’re eligible to earn each year and how many hours you can work each week.

When Will I Get My Financial Aid Award Letter?

The timing of your financial aid award letter will depend on when you applied and the university’s admissions policies. If you completed the FAFSA, applied in the fall and the school admits students on a rolling basis, you could receive information about financial aid as early as December or January.

However, many schools don’t put together financial aid packages until after their application deadlines in the spring. That means you may not receive a financial aid award letter until May or even June.

How to Apply For Financial Aid

To apply for financial aid , you have to complete the FAFSA. The federal government and universities use the FAFSA to determine your financial aid eligibility.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, FAFSA forms must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CT on June 30, 2024. However, states and colleges may have deadlines that differ from the federal deadline. Check with the school financial aid administrator to see when you need to submit the FAFSA.

The FAFSA is free to complete, and you can fill out the application online  by following these steps:

1. Collect the necessary documents.  You can make the financial aid application process less frustrating by compiling your federal income tax returns, W-2s and records of other earnings before starting the application. If you’re applying as a dependent , you’ll need to gather financial records for your parents.

2. Log in to the Federal Student Aid website.  To start the application process, log in to the FSA website . If you already have an account, enter your FSA ID and password. If not, create an FSA account using your contact information and Social Security number.

3. Fill out student information.  The first section of the FAFSA form requests your Social Security number and contact information, state residency details, education level and other personal information.

4. Choose where to send your FAFSA.  If you don’t have the Federal School Code, search for your school by state and name or city. You can send your FAFSA to up to 10 schools, so be sure to add all of your possible choices if you haven’t decided on a school yet.

5. Enter your dependency status.  The Dependency Status section of the application requests information about your marital status, household size and other information to determine whether you are considered an independent for financial aid purposes. This also determines the types of financial documents you need to provide.

6. Input financial information.  When prompted, enter information about your tax returns, household income, additional earnings and assets. If you’re applying as a dependent, you’ll complete the Parent Financials section of the form instead.

7. Sign and submit your application.  After completing the application form, agree to the FAFSA certification statement and sign your application. Filing deadlines may be university-specific, so check with your school’s financial aid office to determine important dates.

8. Reapply for aid every school year.  Federal financial aid eligibility depends on your financial need, so you have to resubmit your FAFSA each year.

Types of Financial Aid

When evaluating financial aid packages from schools, it’s important to keep the different types of financial aid in mind.

Whenever possible, you should use as much gift aid as you can before turning to other sources of financial aid. Gift aid doesn’t have to be repaid and comes in the form of grants or scholarships.

  • Grants: Grants can be issued by the government, schools and private organizations. Grants are typically based on financial need.
  • Scholarships:  Scholarships are awarded by schools and private organizations. Scholarships are usually issued based on merit, such as your academic or athletic performance.

Federal Work-Study

The federal work-study program can be a useful way to pay for a portion of your education expenses and to reduce how much you need to take out in student loans. With work-study, undergraduate and graduate students with financial need get part-time jobs related to their majors. You use the money you earn to cover some of your education costs. The amount you can work is determined by your total federal work-study award.

Not all schools participate in the federal work-study program, and it’s important to know that you’re not guaranteed a job. It’s your responsibility to find a suitable role. The award isn’t guaranteed, and you’ll have to work throughout the semester to earn the money you need.

Federal Student Loans

If you’ve exhausted gift aid and work-study and still need money to pay for school, federal student loans  should be your next consideration. Federal loans tend to have lower interest rates and more flexible repayment terms  than private loans. As an undergraduate student, you have the following loan options:

  • Direct subsidized loans. Undergraduate students with financial need can qualify for subsidized loans. With direct subsidized loans , the government covers the interest that accrues while you’re in school, during your grace period and during periods of deferment. As a first-year student, you can borrow up to $3,500 per year.
  • Direct unsubsidized loans: Undergraduate students can take out direct unsubsidized loans regardless of financial need. With these loans, you’re responsible for all interest that accrues. First-year dependent students can take out up to $2,000 per year, while independent students can take out up to $6,000 per year.
  • Parent PLUS Loans: PLUS loans allow parents of undergraduate students to borrow up to the total cost of attendance, minus other financial aid received.

How to Compare Financial Aid Awards

Because there isn’t a set format for financial aid awards, comparing the different offers can be confusing.

To figure out which school is giving you the best financial aid package, calculate the net price with these simple steps:

  • Identify the school’s cost of attendance. Most financial aid letters will list the total cost of attendance. If your letter doesn’t, ask the financial aid office for the number. Make sure it includes all of your expenses, including textbooks, transportation and supplies.
  • Subtract gift aid and savings.  Subtract the gift aid you received from the school’s total cost of attendance. If you have any savings set aside for college, such as money saved in a 529 plan , subtract that amount as well.
  • Compare net price. The number you get after subtracting gift aid and savings is your net price. That’s how much you’ll have to pay—or borrow in student loans—for college.

In some cases, you may find that a more expensive school gives you more gift aid, reducing your net price. That’s why it’s so important to look at the price after subtracting gift aid so you can see how much you’d have to pay out of your own pocket.

If you’re still confused, take advantage of the Department of Education’s annotated College Financing Plan , which can provide helpful details about each section of the award letter. How to File a Financial Aid Appeal Letter

In some cases, there may be special circumstances that may entitle you to additional financial aid. For example, you could qualify for additional aid if:

  • Your parents lost their jobs or experienced a loss in income
  • You had a major medical expense
  • You have unusually high child care costs
  • Your home was damaged by a natural disaster

Filing an appeal letter also may be a good option if you need more aid due to COVID-19 . To start the appeals process, contact the school’s financial aid office as soon as possible to determine the correct process and deadline for pursuing an appeal.

When you start drafting the letter of appeal, include important information like why you’re appealing the award and provide details about the circumstances that led to the change in your financial status. If appropriate, you may also include documents that illustrate your situation or otherwise support your appeal. Finally, include a specific request for the amount you need to attend the school as well as any competing offers you received from other schools.

Still Not Enough? Steps to Take if You Need More Aid

Unfortunately, your school’s financial aid package may not be enough to cover all of your education expenses.

Cut Your College Costs

If the total cost of attendance is too high even with financial aid, look for ways to reduce your college expenses. For example, you could live off-campus instead of in the dorms or attend a public university rather than a private school. If possible, staying home and commuting to school can significantly lower your education costs.

Look for Additional Scholarships

Finally, private student loans  can be a useful tool to fill the gap. However, they usually have higher interest rates and stricter repayment terms than federal loans, so make sure you review the terms carefully.

Private student loans are issued by banks and lenders rather than the government. They review your application and decide whether to issue you a loan based on your income and credit. As a college student, you’ll likely need a co-signer—a parent or relative with steady income with good credit—to qualify for a loan.
