Kerala’s official language is Malayalam, but it is also home to a variety of other languages. There are five primary varieties of this language spoken in Kerala, and 90 percent of Keralites say it. The other languages spoken are English and Tamil. Kerala places a high value on education, and practically everyone speaks English. If you know any of these languages, communicating with the natives will be simple.
Malayalam, like other Dravidian languages, is agglutinative. It means that it forms words and expresses grammatical functions by adding suffixes one after another. However, in Malayalam, there is no ultimate limit to the length and scope of agglutination, which can lead to extremely long words.
There are many languages from which this language has acquired words. Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Urdu, Dutch, and English are among these languages. Sanskrit, Urdu, and Tamil give most vocabulary borrowings.
In addition, new words are formed through compounding and reduplication. That’s why compound nouns are very common. Also, a lot of onomatopoeic terms are there are duplicated.
Malayalam is a complicated language to learn, owing to its long words and occasionally tricky pronunciation. However, don’t let this discourage you from mastering this musical language. After all, there isn’t a single language that isn’t difficult to learn. However, learning Malayalam becomes less of a challenge when you concentrate on your accomplishments rather than your difficulties.
It’s more important to stay motivated when learning a language than to pick an “easier” language. So, divide down your Malayalam learning and congratulate yourself on your accomplishments. Moreover, keep in mind that it makes no difference how long it takes you to learn Malayalam. All that matters is that you’re making progress toward your objectives.
According to Ethnologue , the Malayalam dialects are Nagari-Malayalam, Malabar, North Kerala, Pulaya, Central Kerala, Namboodiri, South Kerala, Kayavar, Nair, Mappila, Kasargod, and Nasrani. The community dialects are Arabi Malayalam, Namboodiri, Nasrani, Pulaya, and Nair.
There are two basic styles of Malayalam: formal and informal. In radio and television broadcasts, and public speaking, the formal style is used, while the informal one is spoken with relatives, friends, or children.

Building of Malayalam has been initiated in Amrita Vishvavidya Peetam, Coimbatore in December, 2011 as a part the project entitled “Development of Dravidian WordNet: An Integrated wordNet for Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam” funded by Department of Information Technology, MCIT, Govt. of India. The main objective of the project is to build WordNets for Dravidian languages by making use of the already built Hindi WordNet under the project scheme IndowordNet. Hindi WordNet has been built based on Princeton English WordNet which is a component of EuroWordNet. The main objective of EuroWordNet is to develop an extensive and high quality of multilingual database with WordNets for several languages (mainly European Languages such as French, German, Chekh, Italian, etc.) in a cost-effective manner. On the similar line IndowordNet is being built for Indian languages. Malayalam wordNet is a component of Dravidian wordNet which in turn is the component of IndowordNet. Malayalam wordNet is an online lexical database. It is useful for many applications of Natural Language Processing.

WordNet is a hierarchical information base in any language. A WordNet is implemented using indexed file system.Even though there are many languages in which we have good wordnets, Malayalam is not having an effi cient wordnet. This paper suggests a method for implementing wo rdnet using database and shows how it is more efficient t han the traditional system. We also discusses about the implem entation details of a Malayalam wordnet using Mysql data base
Rajendran S
Introduction The WordNet is a lexical resource. It is lexicon based on psycholinguistics principles. It organizes the lexical information in terms of word meanings. It is a system for bringing together different lexical and semantic relations between words. The WordNet is being developed using the expansion approach with the help of tools provided by IIT Bombay. Malayalam wordNet is a part of Dravidian wordNet which in turn is a part of Indo wordNet. Malayalam WordNet is being built in Centre for Excellence in Computational Engineering and Network, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. In a language, a word may appear in more than one grammatical categories and within that grammatical category it can have multiple senses. These categories and all senses are captured in the WordNet. WordNet supports the grammatical categories namely Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs. All words which depict the same sense (same meaning) are grouped together to form a single entry in the WordNet. This forms synonym set or synset. Synsets are the basic building blocks of WordNet. For each word can there is a synonym set, or synset in the WordNet representing one lexical concept. This is done to remove ambiguity in cases where a single word has multiple meanings. 1. Relations in WordNet A WordNet is a word sense network. A word sense node in this network is a synset which is regarded as a basic object in the WordNet. Each synset in the WordNet is linked with other synsets through the well-known lexical and semantic relations of hypernymy, hyponymy, meronymy, troponymy, antonymy, entailment etc. Semantic relations are between synsets and lexical relations are between words. These relations serve to organize the lexical knowledge base. 2. Nouns in Wordnet Nouns are organized in a lexical inheritance system. A typical definition of a noun contains a superordinate term followed by certain distinguishing features. The relation of subordination (or class inclusion or subsumption), which is called hyponymy organizes nouns into a lexical hierarchy. The superordinate relation generates a hierarchical semantic organization of nouns. Synset which contains a group of synonyms representing a concept is the building blocks of noun wordNet. Synonymy is a lexical relation that holds between word forms, whereas the semantic relation holds between lexicalized concepts. The hierarchical structuring of nouns can be assumed to be contained in a single hierarchy. Instead, WordNet divides the nouns into several hierarchies, each with a different unique beginner. The semantic fields or domains (Lehrar 1974) which contain their own stock of vocabulary can be equated with these multiple hierarchies. Unique beginner corresponds roughly to a primitive semantic component in a compositional theory of lexical semantics. There is a list of 25 unique beginners for noun source files of EuroWordNet (Vossen 1998): {act, activity} {animal, fauna}{artifact}{attribute} {body} {cognition, knowledge}{communication}{event, happening}{feeling, emotion}{food}{group, grouping}{location}{motivation, motive}{natural object}{natural phenomenon}{person, human being} {plant, flora}{possession}{process}{quantity, amount}{relation}{shape}{state}{substance}{time}
Diptesh Kanojia
Wordnets are rich lexico-semantic resources. Linked wordnets are extensions of wordnets, which link similar concepts in wordnets of different languages. Such resources are extremely useful in many Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications, primarily those based on knowledge-based approaches. In such approaches, these resources are considered as gold standard/oracle. Thus, it is crucial that these resources hold correct information. Thereby, they are created by human experts. However, human experts in multiple languages are hard to come by. Thus, the community would benefit from sharing of such manually created resources. In this paper, we release mappings of 18 Indian language wordnets linked with Princeton WordNet. We believe that availability of such resources will have a direct impact on the progress in NLP for these languages.
A WordNet plays an important role both in the development of NLP applications such as a Machine Translation system and a Question-Answering system as well as for lexical studies of a language. While Wordnets have been compiled for most of the European languages, these resources do not exist for Indian languages. This paper presents the lexicographic and computational issues faced in an attempt to build a ‘Tamil WordNet’. A working model will be ready at the time of presenting the paper.
Proc. 3rd Global WordNet …
Mahesh Reddy
The main objective of the project entitled WORDNET FOR TAMIL is to capture the network of lexical relations between lexical items in Tamil. As we know, lexical items are related to one another in the hierarchical dimension as taxonomies (which show hyponymy-hypernymy and meronymy-holonymy relationship) and non-hierarchical dimension as opposites (which include complementaries, antonyms, antipodals, counterparts, reversives and converses) and synonyms. Also words are related to one another due to their derivational as well as collocational meaning. Componential analysis which studies meanings of lexical items in terms of meaning components or features can help us to capture the above mentioned net work of relations in a more systematic way. A database has to be created depicting the lexical items and their meaning relations such as hyponymy-hypernymy (subordination-superordination relationship), meronymy-holonymy (part-whole relationship), synonymy and lexical opposition and the formal relations such as derivation and collocation. Programs have to be written to capture the net work of relations existing between the lexical items and a user friendly interface has be set up to make use of the Word Net for various purposes. Such a study can be made use of for various lexical studies as well as application oriented studies like machine translation (in which word-disambiguation is a crucial issue), and machine oriented language learning and teaching.

In this paper, we report our methods and results of using, for the first time, semi-automatic approach to enhance an Indian language Wordnet. We apply our methods to enhancing an already existing Sanskrit Wordnet created from Hindi Wordnet (which is created from Princeton Wordnet) using expansion approach. We base our experiment on an existing bilingual Sanskrit English Dictionary and show how lemma in this dictionary can be mapped to Princeton Wordnet through which corresponding Sanskrit synsets can be populated by Sanskrit lexemes. This our method will also show how absence of resources of a pair of languages need not be an obstacle, if another resource of one of them is available. Sanskrit being historically related to languages of Indo-European family, we believe that this semi-automatic approach will help enhance Wordnets of other Indian languages of the same family.

Team holds meeting after dropping 11 games under .500.
Anthony DiComo
NEW YORK -- Shortly after his team’s 10-3 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor made it known that he wanted to call a players-only meeting. Lindor and other veterans made sure players did not scatter to the food room, to the trainer’s table, to their cars. Instead, they remained in the central clubhouse room and talked.
For close to 40 minutes, Mets players discussed the issues that have led them to this spot: 11 games under .500 before the end of May, finding seemingly every way possible to lose a baseball game. According to another veteran, Brandon Nimmo, nearly the entire roster spoke.
“It just felt like a boiling-over point,” Nimmo said. “It felt like the right time to do it. You try and give space.”
For the Mets, words begot actions. Wednesday’s loss was punctuated by reliever Jorge López who, after being ejected by third-base umpire Ramon De Jesus, threw his glove high in the air and into the stands. Manager Carlos Mendoza called the action “unacceptable” and, along with president of baseball operations David Stearns, spoke to López about it after the game. A source with knowledge of that meeting said López was untruthful in his subsequent comment that he never spoke to Mendoza.
The same source added that team officials decided Wednesday night to designate López for assignment, a move that was made official Thursday afternoon.
Asked about the glove-throwing incident after the game, López said he did not regret throwing it, adding, “I don’t give a [expletive] to anything.” The native Spanish speaker then uttered a comment in English that those present interpreted as either López calling the Mets “the worst team in the whole [expletive] MLB,” or calling himself “the worst teammate in the whole [expletive] MLB.”
That comment has created confusion. Asked later in the interview if he indeed meant to call the Mets “the worst team” in baseball, López replied: “Yeah, probably, it looked like.” He subsequently told a team employee that he meant both “team” and “teammate,” but López retracted that notion the following morning in an Instagram post, writing that he meant “teammate” all along.
Wording aside, the entire episode created a sideshow to what was, at its core, another disappointing loss. Tied in the middle innings, the Mets allowed six runs in the eighth inning and wound up losing by seven. They were swept in three games by the Dodgers and have lost eight of their past nine.
Until Wednesday, however, the Mets had been reticent to call a team meeting. Mendoza prefers to handle his business privately, in one-on-one conversations, while players have also been more focused on individual pursuits. But with the season spiraling before his eyes, Lindor said he felt “something in my gut” that this was the right time to gather the roster.

According to multiple players in the room, much of the message focused on process, and the idea that it may be time for some Mets -- even accomplished veterans -- to change habits that are no longer working.
“We’re just not getting it done,” said reliever Adam Ottavino, who allowed four runs in the eighth inning to take the loss. “We’re not throwing up zeroes when we need them, and we’re not getting the hits when we need them. And we’re not putting the at-bats together, we’re not playing the defense. It’s really all over the board. We stink right now.”
Although the Mets have seen significant turnover in recent years, much of their core -- from Lindor, Nimmo and Ottavino to Pete Alonso, Edwin Díaz and Jeff McNeil -- is the same one that won 101 games in 2022. But none of those players are enjoying similar results.
Until Wednesday, Mets officials had resisted dramatic action, such as firing coaches, jettisoning key players or even calling team meetings. Wednesday changed that. With 107 games left to play in the regular season, the fourth-place Mets spoke internally about their shortcomings, then parted ways with a reliever who had not only made critical comments, but embarrassed club officials with his actions.
It may not be enough to save their season, or even the prospect of another Trade Deadline selloff.
But it was, at the least, some action.
“Before the All-Star break and before the Trade Deadline, you’ve got to stay above the water,” Lindor said. “You can’t have the water nose-deep. I’m not a good swimmer. So we’ve got to find ways to get the water to at least our shoulders. Because then that’s when the decisions come in, and it’s the ones we don’t want.”
