What Is Essay Word Counter?

An essay word counter is a simple yet powerful tool that has the ability to quickly count the number of characters and words within an essay. While the primary goal of an essay word counter is to measure characters and words, this tool allows you to determine the number of sentences and paragraphs that your essay consists of.

If you're tasked with reading your essay aloud in front of a classroom, this online word counter can help you prepare by providing you with an estimated speaking time and reading time. If you're asking yourself "How do I count the words in my essay?", plugging your essay into an online word counter will allow you to receive nearly instantaneous results.

Benefits of Using This Tool Compared to Alternatives

Online word counter tools offer the functionality you need to determine what your current essay word count is. There are several additional tools that can provide you with similar functionality, which include Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and PDF documents. Even though all of these alternatives allow users to measure the word count and character count for their essay, they lack many of the extra features that set the online tool apart from the competition.

Wordcounter vs Microsoft Word

When comparing this online word counter to Microsoft Word, the online word counter allows users to paste any kind of text into the box. Even if the text comes from a PDF file, it can be easily copied into the word counter. Among all of the alternatives for an essay word counter, Microsoft Word may be the most comprehensive of the three. Along with measuring the number of words, it can also count characters, pages, lines, and paragraphs. The main issue with Word, however, is that it's less intuitive than using an online tool.

When you click on word count in Microsoft Word, you'll be provided with data on the lines, paragraphs, words, and other aspects of your essay. However, the word count extends to every page of the Word document. To identify the number of words and characters in a specific section, you'll need to highlight the section and select the word count option again.

Wordcounter vs Google Docs

As for Google Docs, this tool doesn't display a status bar that tells you how many words are present in the document. To receive an updated word count, you must select the "Tools" tab that's found in the "Menu" section. From here, you'll be able to select "Word Count". When compared to the online word checker tool, Google Docs doesn't include information about how many sentences are in your essay or the frequency of a specific word.

Wordcounter vs PDF Tool

When it comes to a PDF document, you'll find that these documents are similar to Google Docs in that they don't include a status bar. You're also unable to access any kind of menu that allows you to view the word count of the essay you're writing. There are two distinct options for identifying the word count in your essay. First, you can convert the PDF file into what's known as the Rich Text Format, which makes it easier for you to count the words. You could also upload the file directly into this online word counter, which will give you an accurate word total.

The primary benefit of using the online word counter tool is that there are a number of exclusive features like speaking time and reading time that can't be found in other tools like Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

Essay Length Best Practices

Whether you're writing an essay for a high school class or for graduate school, there are some best practices that can guide you through the process and help you write the best essay. The most important element of writing an essay is getting the length right. If the essay is too long, there's a good chance it isn't as succinct and direct as it should be. The essay length guidelines you should adhere to include:

High school essay

The average essay word count for a high school essay is 300-1,000 words. Most high school essays are five paragraphs long with an introductory paragraph, three total body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.

College admission essay

This essay should be around 200-650 words long. Along with having a set word limit, these essays should include a look at your motivations and interests.

Undergraduate essay

This essay can be around 1,500-5,000 words long. The content and length depend on the college and program you're entering.

Graduate admission essay

An admission essay should be 500-1,000 words in length. Make sure you include a lengthy personal statement that details your motivations and academic achievements.

Graduate school essay

This extended essay word count is usually around 2,500-6,000 words. The assignment you receive depends on the course you're in. Most graduate-level essays are lengthy and can involve research papers.

IB extended essay

The IB extended essay word count is 4,000 words. This essay is mandatory for every student of the International Baccalaureate program and is based on independent research.

QuillBot’s word counter is a free, easy-to-use tool for tracking the word count in your writing.
Our online word count tool provides data for words and lets you simply change whether spaces should be counted as characters. It also displays restrictions for social networking platforms with character limits.

What is a word counter?

When you add your text to QuillBot’s Word Counter, our powerful platform instantly performs the mundane task of counting for you, so you can see right where your word limit is sitting for your project. So, if you don’t know whether compound words count as one or two words, save yourself the searching and let QuillBot be the words calculator. Trust QuillBot’s expertise to know that hyphenated words only count as one, that accented letters don’t count as two words, and that, usually, spaces do count as a character. There’s no need to go cross-eyed counting words manually just to make sure you’re hitting your writing benchmarks. Your time is worth more than that—and so is your eyesight.

When to use a word counter?

Online word counting tools have a variety of uses, from helping you check your daily writing goals to meeting assignment requirements to creating viral social media posts.

How to use the word counter?

To use QuillBot’s free online word counter tool, just type or paste in your text, and QuillBot’s word counter will instantly calculate the number of words. When you’re done working on a section of text, use the trash can icon in the top right corner to clear the window for a clean slate. If you’ve changed or refined the input text to meet a target word count, you can easily download it or copy the updated text to your clipboard using the icons in the bottom right corner.

Who needs a word counter?

When counting words, the objective is usually to meet a minimum or a ballpark number, with a few exceptions. Below are some use cases where a word counter would be needed:

Often, in school or at a university, students will be asked to write a short response to a question or a longer essay. These can range from 250 words to thousands of words.

Word counter needed by Writers

Daily writing goals are important for a serious writer, even at the hobby level. Those looking to make writing a habit or hone their skills often choose to set a daily word count goal, like Neil Gaiman’s 50-words-per-day habit that, slowly but surely, helped him pen Coraline.

Word counter needed by job seekers

Job seekers

When crafting cover letters or completing case studies for job applications, meeting a target word count is sometimes required. For example, an applicant may be asked to write a 1,500-word report on a case study to show their knowledge of the market.

Word counter needed by educators and researchers

Educators and researchers

Research abstracts are one exception where the word count has a strict maximum that is typically difficult to achieve since abstracts often need to summarize years of research into ~300 words.

How is QuillBot’s word counter different from other word counters online?

QuillBot’s word counter tool will soon become your favorite word count checker for at least one of the following reasons:

See everything you need (and more) at once

The word and character counts are displayed side by side, so whether you’re reviewing one or both for your project, there’s no extra clicking, hovering, or changing tabs to see one count or the other. Plus, you can also see the word count for optimized Facebook posts (250 characters) and the hard limit for Twitter posts (280 characters) displayed right on the page in the bottom right-hand corner.

There’s no clutter

QuillBot’s word counter has a clean, intuitive, and clutter-free interface. You won’t be bothered by pop-ups or noisy ads, and it’s still free.

It’s more than just a word counter

Ever need a way to find out how many words there are in any given digital text? With this fast online tool, you can find the answer without having to open your word processor!

How to use this website to count words?

To use this tool, follow the instructions below to count the words in your selected text:

  • Start by writing or copying and pasting the text you wish to count.
  • Once you have done so, use the blue Count Words on this page countofwords.com . The number of words in your chosen text will be displayed to the right.
  • Reset to clear all text from the text entry field.

Why do you need to count words?

In many cases, the amount of words in a text do not matter in a casual environment; this is doubly true if you are writing anything on paper. The minute you are writing in a formal context though, word count becomes an important factor. From writing legal briefings, novels, or an essay, your wordcount is an element that can influence the outcome of your work, whether that be successful publication of your first novel, or an acceptable grade for your assignment.

Data Privacy

Here at countofwords.com, we do not store any of your personal data. This includes any text that is entered on the site for word counting! If you want to save your document, you should use a text editor or word processor first before copying and pasting the text into the input box.

What are the rules we use to count words?

On this site, we define words using separators such as the empty space, and symbols such as :, @, _ and others like it. This means that any text found in between these separators will qualify as a word. For example, Apples : Oranges would qualify as two words, as would Apples:Oranges. A standard email address such as [email protected] would count as four words.

Remember that this also applies to symbols such as &, so if you would like Books & Articles to count as three words, as in “Books and Articles”, then you might want to replace all the & signs with the word “and” before you paste it into the text box. We have more details on the exact rules we use here :

Benefits of using countofwords.com over other word counters

Not all word counters behave in the same way; many use different methods to define what qualifies as a word. Some applications only use an empty space as a separator, so that Writer:Works would count as one word, while Writer : Works would instead be three words, with : counting as a word all by itself! Many others have their own qualities, such as not including _ as a separator so that One_Two counts as one word, while including & as a separator, so that One & Two is two words.

More than that, most of these applications require an email sign-up, or you need to have a program installed on your device before you can use them. With this website however, you will always be able to access a word counter no matter where you are, so long as you are able to connect to the internet!

Online word counters are a perfect tool for anyone who needs to keep a count of their words and characters, but doesn’t use Microsoft Word. Imagine writing a piece and having to manually count the words! Not only will it take forever, but there’s a chance you won’t be wholly accurate.

This tool is also a good way to assess your words per minute typing rate. Simply time yourself timing for five minutes. Type into the box on the online word counter. When the time is up, divide your total word count by five, and you have your average words per minute rate.

How is our tool different from the other word counters?

All word counting is made on the go, there is no need to press any "submit" buttons to make the calculation and therefore no time is lost for this procedure. You can type the text and instantly see how many words you got so far. Also, we do not store any information that is typed or pasted in the word counting box.

Whom is this word counting tool for?

  • Bloggers/Content Writers

You could be writing an article for someone else where the word count is important, but even if it’s for your own site, this tool can be fantastic for your SEO. For example, the body of text should be a minimum of 300 words, and the title should be less than 70 characters to rank effectively.

  • Students/Teachers

As a student, you will often be expected to write assignments with specific word counts. Although a bit of leeway is usually given, if you are well off the count either way, you could lose marks. What a waste of you time and effort! Also, you may find it extremely useful to use professional writing help from custom writing services such as Academized that offers one of the best write my essay services you can find on the Web. This will come in hand in case you are required to write a really difficult assignment.

But wait, there’s more to word counters than just counting words and characters. These tools go beyond the basics, offering a wealth of insights to enhance your writing. For instance, they can provide measures such as words per sentence, syllables per word, and letters per word. In comparison to other word counters, some may even offer additional features to further improve your writing skills.

Some advanced word counter tools even offer features like readability scores and tone of voice assessments to gauge text quality. Crafting Perfect Social Media Posts with Word Limits

Cartoon depiction of social media icons with word and character limits

In the world of social media, word count plays a crucial role too. Every platform, from Twitter to Google Ads, has specific word and character limits. This means your content needs to be tailored to fit these constraints. But how do you craft a captivating story in just 280 characters or sell a product within a 30-word limit?

That’s where online word counter tools come in. They offer suggestions for optimal content length on different platforms, helping your posts stand out and engage your audience. So, whether you’re a social media specialist refining content for maximum impact or a newbie trying to get your tweets just right, a word counter tool can be your secret weapon.

Character Counts for Precision Writing

We’ve talked about counting words, but what about characters? Characters represent numbers, symbols, and letters that form words, phrases, and sentences. The character count includes all the characters in your text, such as spaces and punctuation. It gives you the total number in the text. In certain contexts, like Twitter, character count is king!

Twitter initially set a 140-character limit, reflecting the SMS limit of 160 characters minus space for commands and usernames. Later, it expanded the limit to 280 characters to allow for more expressive content. But remember:

In tweets, URLs are counted as 23 characters due to t.co links

Attached media don’t count towards the limit

Emojis are generally counted as two characters on Twitter

Keep these quirks in mind when crafting your tweets.

The Role of Word Count in SEO Strategy

Artistic representation of SEO strategy with word count balance

Word count is a critical player in the field of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as well. While Google doesn’t consider word count as a direct ranking factor, search engines tend to favor extensive and informative posts. Articles over 1,000 words generally achieve higher rankings, with top-ranking pages often having 2,000 to 2,500 words.

But remember, the focus should always be on producing high-quality content that satisfies the reader’s needs and provides value, rather than just meeting a specific word count. Keyword density is another crucial component of SEO optimization, and online word counter tools can assist in maintaining optimal keyword frequency and providing insights compared to top organic competitors. So, when strategizing for SEO, remember it’s a delicate dance between word count, content quality, and keyword density.

Mastering Microsoft Word's Built-in Tools

Let’s not forget about the good old Microsoft Word, a staple in every writer’s toolkit. It comes with its own handy word count feature, easily accessible on the status bar or via the Menu Bar under Tools > Word Count.

But Microsoft Word offers more than just a word counter. It’s packed with built-in tools that can make your writing process smoother and more efficient. Some of these tools include:

Style templates, which enforce consistent formatting throughout your document

Themes, which can quickly give your document a professional and cohesive visual appearance

The ‘Find and Replace’ function, which streamlines text editing by allowing you to search and substitute words or phrases throughout the entire document with ease.

These features can greatly enhance your writing experience and help you create high-quality documents.

Now, that’s what we call a power-packed tool!

Achieving the Ideal Blog Post Length

So, what’s the ideal length for a blog post? The answer depends on your goal. Recommendations vary from 1,000 to 2,500 words to maximize reader engagement. On average, English-speaking adults read at a pace of 300 words per minute, suggesting blog post lengths of about 2,100 words for optimal engagement.

Long-form content exceeding 1,500 words trends among bloggers due to its many advantages, like increasing reader time on site by 40% and significantly boosting social media interactions. Detailed blog posts encourage readers to explore additional content on your site and provide more opportunities for including hyperlinks, attracting a larger audience.

So, while the ideal blog post length can vary, it’s always a good idea to make your words count!

Adapting to Different Formats & Requirements

The art of mastering word count extends to various writing formats, from novels and screenplays to academic essays. Each format comes with its own genre expectations and requirements, influencing how you adapt your word count.

For extensive documents like novels or screenplays, you can utilize tools like Google Docs’ Word Count feature. A larger word count allows for greater structural complexity and detailed world-building in storytelling, especially in the science fiction and fantasy genres.

And for academic essays, the Essay Structure tool is instrumental in logically organizing your ideas to enhance readability and coherence.

Word count tools do more than just count words; they enhance readability. These tools evaluate attributes like word length, syllables, and sentences to measure your content’s overall readability. For instance, the Flesch Reading Ease test is a readability measure where higher scores indicate easier readability, and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level test rates readability according to U.S. school grades.

Word counters also provide insights into the readability and tone of voice, offering guidance for refining your content’s impact on readers. So, whether you’re writing a blog post, an academic essay, or a social media caption, enhancing text comprehensibility by breaking up content with headings, bullet points, and lists can help make your words more impactful.

Navigating Google Docs Word Count Features

If you’re a Google Docs user, you’re in luck! Google Docs comes with a built-in word count feature. To access it, simply navigate to the ‘Tools’ menu and click on ‘Word count’. And if you want to continuously view your document’s word count while you’re typing, check the box beside ‘Display word count while typing’ in the word count window. It’s as easy as that!

The Intersection of Word Count and Writing Style

Word count and writing style go hand in hand. Your choice to write in a concise or elaborate style will directly impact your word count, shaping your approach to expressing ideas and describing scenes. Different writing genres set different expectations for word count, compelling authors to adapt their writing style to meet these norms.

Using analysis tools to evaluate unique word count can reveal the need for a greater diversity in word choice to enhance style and counteract monotonous repetition. Moreover, moderating sentence length, averaging between 20 to 25 words, contributes to a readable and engaging writing style.

And remember, expressing points directly without superfluous content can help maintain a potent narrative while reducing overall word count.

Efficient Editing: Trimming Excess Words

Efficient editing is an art, and it often involves trimming excess words. The strategy is to focus on crucial points and cut out non-essential ones, decreasing word count while maintaining the essence of the content. This can involve omitting unnecessary usage of ‘the’, reducing excessive use of ‘that’, and eliminating superfluous adverbs and adjectives.

To streamline your text without losing meaning, try the following:

Replace lengthy phrases with concise alternatives

Use shorter synonyms

Avoid redundant transitional words

Simplify sentence structures

Minimize punctuation use

Lastly, identifying and eliminating duplicate information can effectively decrease word count without sacrificing content quality.

Maximizing Writing Impact Within Word Limits

Maximizing writing impact within word limits might seem like a tough task, but with regular practice, it becomes second nature. The key is to make every word count.

One or two-sentence paragraphs can be highly effective and add impact to your writing, making each word count. So, the next time you’re up against a word limit, remember to make each word deliver a punch!

Utilizing Word Count Tools for Academic Success

For students, word count tools are a lifesaver. They assist in keeping writing within specified word limits, crucial for guidelines set for college and graduate school admissions essays. Maximum word count limitations are commonly imposed on academic assignments, necessitating the use of word count tools to ensure compliance.

Word count tools, such as a word count checker, can even help improve academic writing by suggesting the inclusion of examples to meet required word counts. Plus, with features like the Flesch Kincaid readability test, these tools can measure text readability, offering valuable insights for refining your academic essays.

Word Count Benchmarks for Various Text Types

Different text types come with their own word count benchmarks, and you might wonder how many words are typical for each type. For example:

Contemporary novels typically range from 60,000 to 90,000 words

Dystopian novels can extend from 60,000 to 120,000 words

Memoirs usually fall within the range of 45,000 to 80,000 words

Self-help books vary between 30,000 and 70,000 words.

Recognizing these standard word count ranges for different types of texts is critical for authors to accurately structure their work, from articles to novels. Understanding and applying these word count benchmarks can significantly aid writers in meeting genre expectations and improving writing quality, underlining the importance of word counter tools.

Reading time:, word count per page converter, about word count tool.

Word Count Tool is a site that, well, gives you the word count for your text. But wait! If you think that’s all there is to it, then we’ve got a treat for you. Despite the name of the site, Word Count Tool isn’t just your typical online word counter. It has some cool features in the word counter itself, and it also offers a lot more useful tools that writers can have at their disposal. And if that isn’t amazing enough, Word Count Tool also has a blog. Here on Word Count Tool, we write about writing, and we absolutely love it! As writers ourselves, we want to give other writers a hand and aid them in their journey to creating the next bestseller. So we’ve created this comprehensive guide to help you get the best experience out of our site. Let’s dive right in!

Features Of Our Word Counter

The word count tool is fairly easy to use. You can directly type your text into the box. Or if you’re using a word processor or online tool, such as Google Documents, to write your piece, you can simply copy and paste it onto the text box.

Now the word count tool is more than just a simple word counter. It actually has a lot to offer. And we’ll be tackling each cool feature according to sections.

How To Customize Text On Word Count Tool?

Once you’re on the homepage, you will immediately see the text box in the middle of the page. This is where you’ll be placing your text. Right above the text box, you will see four tabs. The first tab will allow you to choose from a variety of fonts. Right next to that tab is the Size tab. From the name alone, you can already guess what that tab does. The font sizes available for use are in the range of 10 to 14. Now, these two, so far, are pretty basic, and you can find them in most word processors. But the next tab is pretty cool. The third tab, labeled Case, allows you to alter the letter case of the text. The default setting is sentence form wherein the start of each sentence is in uppercase. But you can also change the text to all lower case and all upper case. There’s also another option that makes the text into a title. Lastly, there’s the clear tab that allows you to erase the entire text box and start with a fresh, blank one.

Counters On Word Count Tool

Above the tabs, you can see five boxes with their respective labels. These are the counters. As you’d probably expect, the first box will show you the word count for the text pasted. The next two boxes feature the text’s character count, one putting into account spaces and the other without. To the right of that, you will have the sentence count. Now, you should note that the sentence counter determines a sentence by the presence of an end punctuation. So if let’s say, you copy and paste an article with all the headings present, the site will not count those as sentences. It will consider the heading and the first line for that section as one sentence. Additionally, if no end punctuation is present in the entire text, the counter will display a count of one instead of zero in the sentence counter. Lastly, you will find the paragraph count. How it works is that it will identify a chunk of text as a paragraph through the presence of breaks in between texts.

Word Frequency Counter

Moving to the right of the text box, you will see the Word Frequency Counter. This incorporates a fun little way of playing around with data. The Word Frequency Counter basically lists down all the words used in the text and counts how many times they appeared and what percent of the text they comprise. Now, why do you even need to know this data? Well, aside from telling you what words you commonly use in your writing style, it can also be helpful for SEO purposes. It’ll show you how many times you’ve mentioned certain keywords in your text. This way, you can determine whether your use of keywords in the article was overkill or not enough. And of course, you can adjust accordingly to better optimize your work.

Flesch Reading Score And Text Readability

Now, looking at the bottom part, you will see two lines right below the text box. The first line is labeled Flesch Reading Score, while the second is labeled Reading time. As you can probably tell, the reading time will give you an estimate of how long it would take for an average person to read through the text. This is an especially nice feature to have when writing a speech since you often can’t tell how long it already is until you practice reciting it out loud. Having this feature will help save you time while still constructing your speech so you can cut or add accordingly. Another thing that could affect reading time is readability. The Flesch Reading Ease is just the tool to help you determine that. The test uses a formula to assign a score to a particular text depending on the number of words, sentences, and syllables in your work. But to put it simply, the higher the Flesch Reading Score, the easier it is to read.

Lastly, take a look below the Flesch Reading Score and Reading time. You will find the Word Count Per Page Converter. This will allow you to know the total number of pages your article occupies based on the font and spacing you’ll be using, and of course, the word count. This little tool is perfect for assignments where your instructor just requires minimum or maximum pages.

We simply can’t get enough of word count and you should too. Here’s a look at what you can expect when browsing our archives. And hopefully, this will help you get as excited about word count as we do.

Typical Word Count For Different Types Of Texts

In the literary world, there are different ways to write a story. And with that, there are different lengths as well. You’ve probably heard of short stories and novels, and perhaps all that is in between. But have you ever asked yourself what counts as short in a short story? Or maybe you’ve wondered how long a story can go before you can call it a novel? Are there rules that bind what is and what is not in terms of word count? And if so, what are these?

Well, no, there aren’t really word count police who’ll shake their head for every excess word. But there is a general range for each type of text that writers and scholars alike agree. Take the short story, for example. Short stories can have a rough maximum of 7,500 words. Short story books range from 3,500 to 7,500 words, but word count can be as low as 1,000 . A story more than 7,500 words but less than 17,000, on the other hand, is what you call a novelette. This term might be familiar to you, and it is often interchanged with the longer form, novella. Novellas are lengthier than novelettes but usually do not exceed 40,000 words. Stories that do exceed that, however, are – you guessed it – novels!

So, why the need to know all this? Well, if you’re a writer plotting your story, you have to consider how long you expect your story to be and if it matches with the time you’re willing to invest in writing that story. If you want to write something for short-term, consider writing a short story or novelette, and piece out a concise plotline you can execute in the appropriate amount of words.

Word Count To Pages

Sometimes professors will ask you to write a report or paper and require a certain number of pages for the length. But how many words would you need to write if you have to submit three pages? Well, we can really only estimate the word count per page because certain factors would affect this like lengthy words, font size, and spacing. But an estimate is better than nothing, right? Here on Word Count Tool, our “How Many Pages is [Blank] Words?” will help answer your questions. But as a general guide, roughly 500 words would make up a single page. If you want to find out the exact number of pages your piece is, you can use the Word Count Per Page Converter on the homepage.

Where To Find Word Count On Google Docs?

A lot of people use this helpful online word processor to write various reports, papers, or articles. And a lot of the time, groups use this to simultaneously work on a paper together. If what you’re working on has a required amount of words, it’s best to know how many words you’ve written so far. This will help you gauge how many more you need to write or if you need to cut out some parts already. Google Docs doesn’t automatically show you your word count when you use it. But this word count feature is available on this platform . Simply go to Tools, click “word count” and then a pop-up will show on screen. The pop-up will give you the number of pages, words, characters, and characters excluding spaces. If you want to see your word count as you write, make sure to click the box beside “display word count while typing,” and a word counter will show at the bottom of your screen.

Where To Find Word Count On Microsoft Word?

If you prefer using the classic Microsoft Word to write, then no worries. Microsoft Word is also equipped with its own word counter . You will usually find the word count on the status bar, right beside the page counter. If it happens to not be there, just right-click on the status bar and select Word Count. If you want a more detailed report of your word count that includes characters, paragraphs, and even lines, just head out to the Menu Bar. Click on Tools and then Word count, and voila! There you go. Pretty simple, right?

Where To Find Word Count On Pages?

Now, Apple users, don’t you fret. We haven’t forgotten about you. Now, if you want to see the word count while you type away, here’s what you do. Click on View on the toolbar and select “Show Word Count.” If you also want to see character count or paragraph count, hover the pointer over the right side of the counter and click on the arrows that appear to select which counter you want to display. And there you go.

How To Increase Word Count?

A lot of times, we have trouble reaching the required word count. Perhaps the words just aren’t coming to you, or maybe you feel that you’ve already said all that you can. We’ve all been there. But, if your professor is asking for a certain number of words, you have to meet that else get deductions. Well, don’t worry because there are ways to increase your word count. One of the best ways to achieve a lengthier piece is by adding examples. Deliver your point well by illustrating a scenario. This way, your readers can easily grasp your concept and also meet the required word count.

How To Decrease Word Count?

If sometimes we have a hard time filling in the spaces, other times call for a reduction of words. There really are instances where we go way beyond the assigned word count, and our piece becomes too long that we lose the reader’s interest . For these cases, you need to decide which points are crucial for your piece, and which ones you can cut out. If, after this, your work is still over the word count, then try rephrasing what you’ve written. Shorten long phrases by replacing them with something more concise. For example, instead of saying “is able to” you can go for the simpler “can.” You can also decrease your word count by limiting the use of flowery words. Sometimes, it’s really better to be direct, simple, and straight to the point.

Word Count For Famous Novels

People often look at a book and say, “hmm…that’s too long” and miss the opportunity of a new adventure. But for book lovers out there, there is no greater joy than to dive into a wondrous new world. And often, you get so caught up in the story that you don’t even realize the length of what you’ve already read. If you’re curious how many words you’ve actually read from your favorite books , we’ve got articles that give you the exact number. It can be pretty cool to see the numbers behind the magic; all the work put in laboriously and lovingly by authors just to create the books we love the most.

Other Tools On Word Count Tool

Despite the site’s name, Word Count Tool offers more than just a word counter. The site features other tools such as the Character Counter, Scrabble Word Finder, Pomodoro Timer, and Mind Map. Learn what each tool has to offer, why you need them, and how best to utilize these tools.

Other Useful Online Tools

Aside from the helpful tools we have here on Word Count Tool, every writer should be well-equipped with several tools to aid them in their writing. Some tools we suggest you include in your collection are grammar and plagiarism checkers.

Grammarly is one of the writing tools our very own writers use when writing articles for our blog. There’s a Google Chrome extension for this, so it’ll be really helpful if you’re one to use Google Documents often. It’ll underline words in red if it senses spelling errors or wrong use of the word. If you go to the site itself, you can paste your work, and Grammarly will grade your piece accordingly. It’ll often show you suggestions of words or phrases you might want to replace or remove. And it’ll also show you how many errors you’ve made by category such as punctuation errors or passive voice misuse, etc. However, if you’re not on premium, you’ll only know the number and not the exact phrase or word that garnered that error.

Plagiarism Checker

One fear most writers have is accidentally plagiarizing somebody else’s work. Now, plagiarism is definitely a big no-no, especially in the writing world. But sometimes you are unaware that what you’ve written actually mirrors an already existing article online. Now, you might have written it with no intention to plagiarize at all, but Google does not know that. And how are you supposed to justify your case to an algorithm? To avoid getting flagged for plagiarism on Google, make sure to run your work through online plagiarism checkers to ensure your piece is 100% unique and 100% yours.

Why Word Count Is Important?

Sometimes you as a writer may be required to write within in a certain word or character limit. College essays are a classic example of where this is the case where students have to write 250-, 500-, or 1000-word essays.

Some people may write more than the expected length of the material, while others fall short of the words. Whether writers have trouble writing too few works or too many, a word counter can help.  So why do you need to worry about word count?

Keeping a strict word count not only benefits writers but the publishers and agents as well. Readers also benefit from word count limits since they can often read more efficiently and aren’t just trying to wade through a list of details. Regardless of what kind of writer you are, you should keep word count in mind as you’re writing.

What Is Word Count?

To understand how to count words, we need to know what a word actually is. A word is made of characters that are separated by punctuation marks or spaces. Emojis count as words in text processors and usually count as two characters since they take up two to four bytes of data . Adding up all the words in a document represents the “word count” and just as adding up all the characters represents the “character count”. Use our dedicated character counter to see character counts.

A word count tool such as ours or Microsoft Word can check how many words a piece of content has.

Teachers or professors sometimes set word count limits for essays or other homework. Sometimes a teacher may assign a page or paragraph limit instead and that limit is easy to translate to word count. A paragraph typically contains around 100 to 200 words while a page typically contains 250 to 500 words depending on whether it’s single or double spaced.

There are a lot of word counter tools online and included within word processors, such as Microsoft Word, but we hope you enjoy ours.

Social Media Word Counts

Various social media channels have word and character limits for the content you post to their sites. Below are the word count limits for various social media platforms.

Twitter Character Count

Twitter allows up to 280 characters in regular Tweets and 10,000 characters in DMs (Direct Messages). The ideal length of a Tweet is 71-100 Characters.

Facebook Post Character Limits

Facebook has very generous character limits of up to 63,206  characters per post.  However, the ideal length of a Facebook post is 40-80 characters.

Instagram Character Limits

The limit for an Instagram caption is 2,200 characters , but the ideal length is 138-150 characters. The maximum length of an Instagram bio is 150 characters.

Why Is Word Count Important?

Word count plays several roles for writers from helping them to engage with readers to helping them rank in search engines for content marketing.

Why Readers Care About Word Count?

Word count is an important factor for readers. You need to balance length and detail with the reader’s attention span. Readers may skim a 150 words article , but may not have consumed enough information to understand the content. However, your readers might be bored after reading through a 4,000-word white paper about a topic.

Readers can pay attention for about eight seconds at a time. In this time, some readers may skim while others may read for comprehension. One contributing factor is the reading level of your audience. Detail passages with complex words will be harder for younger, or less educated, readers to comprehend. The Flesch-Kincaid Readability Test cn be used to understand how complex your writing is. Our word counter automatically scores the readability of your writing.

Typical word counts for various documents:

  • 0 to 500 words: Ad copy, essays, product descriptions
  • 500 to 1,000 words: Blog articles, essays, news articles
  • 1,000 to 2,000 words: Short-form news articles, medium-length blog posts, and short pieces of journalism
  • 2,000 to 3,000 words: College essays, operating manuals, and longer-form blog posts
  • 3,500 to 15,000 words: College dissertations, theses, and in-depth blog posts and journal articles
  • 15,000 to 50,000 words: Novels, novellas , and other published books.
  • 50,000 to 100,000 words: Novels

Word Count for SEO: How Word Count Helps SEO Rankings

As mentioned earlier, word count is essential for readers, but it’s also important for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google and other search engines favor more in-depth articles where writers go into details about whatever topic they’re writing about. Google views these articles as “authoritative.” Word count matters for SEO just as much as for readers.

Seo Ideal Word Count And Content Length - Word Counter Tool

What Word Count Is Sufficient for SEO?

For FAQ articles , a word count of at least 500 words . For reviews and editorial content , we recommend at least 1,500 words .

Search engines are pretty good at identifying “fluff” in articles, so don’t just add a bunch of irrelevant text to an article just to boost its word count for SEO. Instead, focus on writing well-written, in-depth content about your blog topic so that readers stick around. This will not only keep readers on your website but might make them come back again if they can trust the content that you’ve written.

What is Word Counter?

A word counter is a tool that helps you count the number of words and characters in a document. The tool also works as a sentence counter and calculates the number of sentences, phrases, and paragraphs in a document as well. For those of you concerned about the reading or speaking time for the text you're working on, the tool will also offer you that. It is also capable of calculating the frequency of a particular word in a document. For example, the frequency of the word 'word' in this document is 8.8%.

Online Word Counter vs. Word Processors

The job of an online word counter is similar to that of a word processor. However, word processors are great for writing your articles but do not provide adequate measures to optimize your writing. Word counter has a word frequency counter that helps you measure your article's primary keywords and how to use them better. It also has a sentence counter that lets you understand whether your piece has the right number of sentences for its length.

For example, if a 1000-word article doesn't have a lot of sentences, it means that the reading can be very complicated and hard for the audience to understand.

Word Count in Word and Office Suite

The word count offered by Word and Office Suite counts the number of words in your document. It also counts pages, paragraphs, lines, and characters. This essay word counter offered by Word checks the document thoroughly and gives you the number of characters with and without spaces as well. You can check the number of words in your essay on the status bar of your document.

However, the status bar shows the number of words in the entire document. To check the number of words in some lines or paragraphs, you can select them and check the status bar. If you click on the status bar, you will also get information about the lines, paragraphs, and characters.

Word Count in PDF Document

Unlike Word or Office Suite, a PDF document doesn't display the number of words in the status bar. It also doesn't have a menu that lets you see the word count in the file. Therefore, one of the options is to convert the file into a Rich Text Format (RTF) and then count its words. Another option is to upload the file onto an online word count calculator and calculate the number of words in the document.

Word Count in Google Docs

Google Docs also doesn't have a status bar that shows the number of words in the document. However, you can click on the Tools tab in the Menu bar, under which you will find the word count option. It also allows you to choose the option to show word count all the time while you're writing your article. Unlike the word count checker tool, Google Docs only counts the number of pages, words, characters, and characters without spaces in the document. It doesn't tell you about the word frequency or the number of sentences.

How to Use the Word Count Tool - Step by Step Guide

The word count tool is an easy online helper that helps you check the number of words in your document and the frequency of specific keywords in them. Here's how you can use the Word Count Tool online.

  • Open the webpage of the online word count tool.
  • The page has a text box where you can start typing your essay or paste the text from a document on your computer.
  • Once you have pasted the content or have typed it up, the number of words and characters would be displayed near the text box.
  • You will also get the frequency of all the words in your document to see if you need to make any changes to it. You will also be able to check the number of sentences, paragraphs, and pages in the document.
  • Finally, you can export the list of the words in .txt or.csv format.

The Word Counter is a helpful tool to make your documents ready to be put up online. Not only do they help you stay under your word-limit, but they also help you find the right keywords for your document and use them wisely.

How Long Should a College Essay Be? | Word Count Tips

Published on September 29, 2021 by Kirsten Courault . Revised on June 1, 2023.

Most college application portals specify a word count range for your essay, and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit. If no word count is specified, we advise keeping your essay between 400 and 600 words.

You should aim to stay under the specified limit to show you can follow directions and write concisely. However, if you write too little, it may seem like you are unwilling or unable to write a thoughtful and developed essay.

Table of contents

Word count guidelines for different application types, how to shorten your essay, how to expand your essay, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about college application essays.

Each university has a different suggested or required word count depending on which application portal it uses.

Some application portals will allow you to exceed the word count limit, but admissions officers have limited time and energy to read longer essays. Other application portals have a strict limit and will not allow you to exceed it.

For example, in the Common App , the portal will not allow you to submit more than 650 words. Some colleges using the Common App will allow you to submit less than 250 words, but this is too short for a well-developed essay.

Application portal Word count Strict limit?
Common App 250–650
Coalition App 500–650
UC App Four 350-word essays

For scholarship essays , diversity essays , and “Why this college?” essays , word count limits vary. Make sure to verify and respect each prompt’s limit.

Don’t worry too much about word count until the revision stage ; focusing on word count while writing may hinder your creativity. Once you have finished a draft, you can start shortening or expanding your essay if necessary.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

On some application portals, you can exceed the word limit, but there are good reasons to stay within it:

  • To maintain the admissions officer’s attention
  • To show you can follow directions
  • To demonstrate you can write concisely

Here are some strategies for shortening your essay.

Stay on the main point

It’s good to use vivid imagery, but only include relevant details. Cut any sentences with tangents or unnecessary information.

My father taught me how to strategically hold the marshmallow pierced by a twig at a safe distance from the flames to make sure it didn’t get burned, ensuring a golden brown exterior.

Typically, my father is glued to his computer since he’s a software engineer at Microsoft. But that night, he was the marshmallow master. We waited together as the pillowy sugary goodness caramelized into gooey delight. Good example: Sticks to the point On our camping trip to Yosemite, my family spent time together, away from technology and routine responsibility.

My favorite part was roasting s’mores around the campfire. My father taught me how to hold the marshmallow at a safe distance from the flames, ensuring a golden brown exterior.

These college essay examples also demonstrate how you can cut your essay down to size.

Eliminate wordiness

Delete unnecessary words that clutter your essay. If a word doesn’t add value, cut it.

Here are some common examples of wordiness and how to fix them.

Problem Solution
We had done a lot of advance planning for our science project. We had done a lot of planning for our science project.
I didn’t know whether or not I should tell the truth. I didn’t know whether I should tell the truth.
When I was a child, I came up with an imaginary friend named Roger to get away from my parents’ fighting. When I was a child, I invented an imaginary friend named Roger to escape my parents’ fighting.
Unnecessary “of” phrases The mother of my friend was Marissa, who was a member of our church. My friend’s mother Marissa was a fellow church member.
False subjects “There is/there are” There are many large-scale farms in America, but there is a local sustainable farm preserved by my family. America has many large-scale farms, but my family preserves a local sustainable one.
Unnecessary qualifiers I pretty much just wanted a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins. I wanted a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins.
Passive voice Most of the German chocolate cake was eaten by me. I ate most of the German chocolate cake.
Unnecessary helping verbs I am going to be attending my school’s annual carnival. I will attend my school’s annual carnival.

Use a paraphrasing tool

If you want to save time, you can make use of a paraphrasing tool . Within the tool you can select the “short” mode to rewrite your essay in less words. Just copy your text in the tool and within 1 click you’ll have shortened your essay.

If you’re significantly under the word count, you’re wasting the opportunity to show depth and authenticity in your essay. Admissions officers may see your short essay as a sign that you’re unable to write a detailed, insightful narrative about yourself.

Here are some strategies for expanding your essay.

Show detailed examples, and don’t tell generic stories

You should include detailed examples that can’t be replicated by another student. Use vivid imagery, the five senses, and specific objects to transport the reader into your story.

My mom cooks the best beef stew. The sweet smell of caramelized onions and braised beef wafts from the kitchen. My mother attends to the stew as if it’s one of her patients at the hospital, checking every five to 10 minutes on its current state.
The shepherd’s pie reminded me of familiar flavors. Reminding me of the warm, comforting blanket from my childhood, the shepherd’s pie tasted like home.
His hands were cracked and rough. His hands were cracked and rough like alligator skin.

Reveal your feelings and insight

If your essay lacks vulnerability or self-reflection, share your feelings and the lessons you’ve learned.

Be creative with how you express your feelings; rather than simply writing “I’m happy,” use memorable images to help the reader clearly visualize your happiness. Similarly, for insight, include the follow-up actions from your lessons learned; instead of claiming “I became a hard worker,” explain what difficult tasks you accomplished as a result of what you learned.

After my best friend Doug moved away, it was really hard. Before, we used to always talk about video games, barter snacks during lunch, and share secrets. But now, I’m solo. Before my best friend Doug moved away, we used to do everything together. We would spend countless bus rides discussing and strategizing sessions. At lunch break, we would barter Oreos and Cheez-Its while confiding in each other about whom we wanted to ask to the school dance. But now, I’m Solo, like Han without Chewbacca.
My mother’s death was difficult. My father’s grief made it difficult for him to take care of me and my brothers, so I took care of them. After my mom passed, my grief was overwhelming, but my father’s was even deeper. At 13, I cooked, cleaned, and took care of my two younger brothers. Although the household responsibilities were tiring, I liked一and needed一the stability and purpose I derived from the new routine.

Most college application portals specify a word count range for your essay, and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit to write a developed and thoughtful essay.

You should aim to stay under the specified word count limit to show you can follow directions and write concisely. However, don’t write too little, as it may seem like you are unwilling or unable to write a detailed and insightful narrative about yourself.

If no word count is specified, we advise keeping your essay between 400 and 600 words.

If you’re struggling to reach the word count for your college essay, add vivid personal stories or share your feelings and insight to give your essay more depth and authenticity.

If your college essay goes over the word count limit , cut any sentences with tangents or irrelevant details. Delete unnecessary words that clutter your essay.

You can speed up this process by shortening and smoothing your writing with a paraphrasing tool . After that, you can use the summarizer to shorten it even more.

There is no set number of paragraphs in a college admissions essay . College admissions essays can diverge from the traditional five-paragraph essay structure that you learned in English class. Just make sure to stay under the specified word count .

Common App Word Count Limit: How Long Should My Essay Be?

People gather outside the front steps of a columned building at Harvard University.

You should always use all the real estate they give you when writing your application essays. This means going to the maximum word limit , or as close as possible to it, on  every  written prompt. Just like the employee who shows up to the office late and leaves early appears lazy and uninterested in their job, the applicant who doesn’t take advantage of every last word seems to have better things to do than write their college application essays. And if you’re an academically ambitious high schooler intent on attending a highly selective college, you quite literally don’t have anything better to do than give your application your all. Your future is counting on it!

You might think those 100-character prompts often found in college supplements don’t apply to this rule, but think again. You want to max the word or character count wherever you see a blank space waiting for you to fill with words — with one notable exception.

What Is the Common App Essay Word Count Limit?

The Common Application’s Personal Statement has a word limit of 650; you should go up to that limit or risk coming across as noncommittal. But is that all there is to this story? Not quite.

How to Use the Common App Additional Information Section

There is an age-old expression in elite college admissions that many students in 2024 are blissfully unaware of: “The thicker the file, the thicker the student.” Are we at Ivy Coach contradicting ourselves? No. We’re referring to the Additional Information section of The Common App. We often get prospective clients who come to us for a  PostMortem  after rejection from their top school. They have no idea what they could have possibly done wrong, and yet when one of our former elite college admissions officers takes a look at their application, the Additional Information section is filled with redundancies and superfluous information!

The Additional Information section should only include courses taken outside of school (along with corresponding grades) or list genuinely impressive activities that didn’t make it onto the activities list but complement your  singular admissions hook . It’s also okay to include a published abstract in this section (unless the school has a section for abstracts, like Columbia University . Don’t make admissions officers read the same thing twice — their time is valuable!). Each time you apply, The Common App. will save the current incarnation of your application. So, be sure to check for redundancies before each submission (e.g., delete the abstract in Additional Information for Columbia if you’re including it under the Abstract section).

In most cases, the Additional Information section should be left blank. Fill out those essays (including the optional ones!). Go up to the maximum word count wherever possible. But don’t include a link to a video of your violin performance if your singular hook is computer science. Don’t include a poem if your hook is environmental advocacy. Your singular hook should be the focus of your application, and the Additional Information section should only include information that supports or enhances this hook.

Respect the Time of Admissions Officers

Don’t waste admissions officers’ time — applicant pools to elite schools have swelled to the tens of thousands in recent years. They’ll probably only give your application a total of 8 minutes of consideration. This, of course, is more than enough time. The  8-minute rule  is a guideline that suggests admissions officers spend about 8 minutes on each application, given the large number of applications they have to review. You don’t want to thrust them into a situation where they spend most of those precious 8 minutes deciphering some extraneous information that makes you a less competitive applicant.

If navigating these confusing and seemingly contradictory rules about applying to highly selective schools makes your head spin, take out the guesswork by relying on Ivy Coach ’s team of former elite college admissions officers to help your child earn admission to the school of their dreams. We will ensure their application communicates their singular hook as efficiently and effectively as possible.

If you’re interested in optimizing your child’s case for admission to a highly selective college, fill out our  complimentary consultation form , and we’ll be in touch.

Lego Star Wars writers on finally bringing Darth Jar Jar to life 10 years after a 2,500-word essay 'proving' his existence broke Reddit: "Everyone was game for exactly what we wanted to do here"

Rebuild the Galaxy hits Disney Plus on September 13

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy

Jar Jar Binks: one-time laughing stock and, in the years since the prequel trilogy, the subject of surprisingly detailed fan theories that he is – in fact – a Sith Lord.

Almost a decade ago, Redditor Lumpawarroo cracked the case wide open with a tongue-in-cheek 2,500-word essay detailing how Darth Jar Jar was actually pulling the strings alongside Palpatine. Over 8,000 comments later, a legend was born.

Since then, many have latched onto the ridiculous notion that the Gungan is actually the root of all evil. But it was all fan fiction and pie-in-the-sky hopes – until now.

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is a new Disney Plus series that takes familiar Star Wars tropes and themes and remixes them in multiverse-style adventures. Of course, that finally meant Darth Jar Jar could spring to life in a galaxy far, far away.

"That was one of those things where, very early on in these discussions about what this show was gonna be like — we knew we wanted to rebuild the galaxy, mash things up, and it felt like the perfect opportunity. 'We need to do Darth Jar Jar,'" writer and executive producer Benji Samit told ComicBook.com .

Samit, though, encountered surprisingly little pushback from both Lego and Lucasfilm when pitching the brick-tastic spin on the infamous character.

"That was one of the first ideas we had where we were just sort of like, 'Do you think we could try this thing?' And to everyone at Lucasfilm and LEGO's credit, they just said yes. Everyone was game for exactly what we wanted to do here," Samit said. "I can think back to us, before we had any success, just hanging out, eating junk food, and theorizing about Dar Jar Jar. And now to say that we made it happen is pretty wild."

The new Disney Plus series, set for release on September 13, sees Ahmed Best return to voice Darth Jar Jar in what Samit describes as a "canon-adjacent" adventure that sees the Star Wars universe shaken up after – as per the synopsis – "an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling ( Stranger Things ' Gaten Matarazzo), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple."

Knowing the word count of a text can be important. For example, if an author has to write a minimum or maximum amount of words for an article, essay, report, story, book, paper, you name it. WordCounter will help to make sure its word count reaches a specific requirement or stays within a certain limit.

In addition, WordCounter shows you the top 10 keywords and keyword density of the article you're writing. This allows you to know which keywords you use how often and at what percentages. This can prevent you from over-using certain words or word combinations and check for best distribution of keywords in your writing.

In the Details overview you can see the average speaking and reading time for your text, while Reading Level is an indicator of the education level a person would need in order to understand the words you’re using.

Harris Can Win on the Economy, but She Needs a Stronger Message

A photograph of Kamala Harris at a lectern, with her hand on her chest.

By Jedediah Britton-Purdy

Mr. Britton-Purdy is a professor at Duke Law School and the author of four books about the Constitution, the environment and the fate of American democracy.

In Tuesday’s debate against Donald Trump, Kamala Harris emphasized her middle-class background, her admiration for small business owners and her plans for an “opportunity economy.” She promised tax credits for young families and support for first-time homeowners. Those attempts to put meat on the bones of her economic plan will not be enough to win the presidential election.

In the latest Times/Siena poll , Ms. Harris trailed Mr. Trump by 13 points on the economy, the issue that matters most to voters. It’s why she’s merely tied with Mr. Trump in the race overall, not crushing him.

Optimistic words and some admirable proposals aren’t enough to overcome the discontent and anger that large majorities of Americans feel about the economy. Ms. Harris must speak directly to this experience and advance a strong, coherent economic program for a freer, more fair economy.

Between broad phrases like “opportunity economy” and some policy talking points, she hasn’t found her footing on the economy yet. She sounded almost populist in North Carolina in August, mixing talk about the “dignity” of homeownership with denunciation of high prescription drug prices and calls for canceling medical debt. A few weeks later, in New Hampshire, she sounded more like the former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, promising to keep taxes on investment income significantly lower than President Biden recently proposed .

Ms. Harris needs a clearer economic message, one that can build a coalition big enough to win in November and break us out of our political stalemate. There is a way for her to do that, and she is already inching toward it.

Democrats have worked to make freedom the theme of this campaign. Ms. Harris used the word “freedom” or “freedoms” 12 times in her acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, calling for reproductive freedom, freedom from gun violence, freedom to love and marry and freedom from pollution. When she rattled off a list of “what we stand for,” freedom came first.
