Certificate in Oral Health Education

About this qualification

The National Diploma in Dental Nursing course is accredited by the National Examination Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) and the qualification is approved by the General Dental Council (GDC). Upon completion, it will enable learners to apply for registration with the GDC and qualify as a Dental Nurse.

The Diploma course combines lectures and classroom teaching with work experience in a dental practice which will enable you to acquire essential skills and confidence necessary to deal with both members of the public and dental professionals.

Who is it suitable for?

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry qualifications but students are expected to be educated to good GCSE level or equivalent and have a good command of English language. Students are not admitted under the age of 18.

What qualities are required to succeed as a Dental Nurse?

A good Dental Nurse will be well-organised with an eye for detail and be confident in dealing with members of the public. A caring outlook is required along with the ability to work as part of a team while exercising initiative when required.

What prior experience do I need?

Many of our successful Dental Nurses join the course with little or no prior work experience. Others are looking for a change of career and a background of working in a people-facing environment such as retail, transport/tourism or hospitality (for example) is particularly useful.

How is this qualification structured?

The course covers the NEBDN syllabus and includes those areas of knowledge and understanding which a dental nurse needs to develop in order to be able to practise competently.

The course also provides extensive preparation for the practical part of the exam (OSCE), and support with preparing the required Record of Experience (RoE).

Work experience is an essential part of the course and where students are not already part of a Dental Practice the School will assist the student in finding employment.

How is the course assessed?

The NEBDN examination is in two parts and you will need to pass Part 1 before you can take Part 2.

To be awarded this qualification, learners must pass the NEBDN written examination consisting of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and extended matching questions (EMQs). This is followed up by a practical examination consisting of a series of objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).We provide all the learning resources you need to succeed along with expert tuition. Our students have an outstanding record of success in the examinations.

Work experience:  All students are required to gain work experience in a Dental Practice. This can be your current practice or the School will assist you in finding a suitable employment if you are new to the dental profession. During the course of your study your tutor may visit you at your practice to provide support and advice.

How long will it take to complete this qualification?

12 – 18 Months.

Do you need to be working to take this qualification?

As noted above learners will need to be working in a Dental Practice with a full-time or part-time employment contract in place, and enrolled on the Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing course to enable them to show competence in both knowledge and practical skills.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

The Diploma opens up an exciting range of opportunities to gain level 4 or 5 qualifications in:

  • Dental sedation
  • Dental radiography
  • Dental technology
  • Oral health education
  • Special care dental nursing
  • Orthodontic nursing
  • Dental practice management.

Career opportunities

  • Laboratory Technician
  • Senior Nurse
  • Practice Manager

What is an Associate Degree in Nursing?

Do you love helping people? Want to make a real difference in your community? Nursing may be your calling. And it doesn’t take as long as you think. In fact, if you’re looking for a quick way to become a nurse, an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program could be the perfect option.

The express lane to becoming a registered nurse (RN) , an AD, includes legitimate hands-on training, real-world experience, and a whole lot of job opportunities waiting for you on the other side of the graduation stage.

Below, we’ll break down everything you need to know about ADN programs. How to apply, what you’ll learn, and where it can take you. Let’s get started!

What is an ADN?

A two-year program designed to prepare eager students for a career as a registered nurse, an Associate Degree in Nursing program combines classroom instruction with hands-on clinical training, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to provide quality patient care.

Graduates of ADN programs then become eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam to obtain RN licensure. The ADN is the quickest first step to becoming a registered nurse.

What are the classes like?

ADN programs combine regular academic RN coursework with extensive clinical practice. Core courses include fundamental subjects such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology, building a strong theoretical foundation for nursing care.

To complement all the in-class learning, students participate in clinical rotations in diverse settings, offering practical experience and applying classroom knowledge to real-world patient care.

Clinical experiences

This is where things get real. Real-world practice is a big deal in nursing school . Since ADN programs are so short, students get to dive right in by working side-by-side with nurses in places they may work in, such as hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes.

It’s on-the-job training but way more interesting. Students learn essential skills to better care for future patients, communicate clearly, and work as a part of a team. This hands-on time helps students prepare for their big-time nursing jobs once they graduate.

Launch your Nursing career at UB!   Download our free informational sheet  and get started today.

Licensing and certification.

After completing an ADN program, graduates must pass the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) to become licensed RNs. The NCLEX-RN is a standardized exam assessing the knowledge and skills necessary for safe and effective nursing practice. Each state has specific licensing requirements, so graduates should familiarize themselves with their state’s regulations .

Advantages of an ADN

An ADN offers several advantages , making it an attractive option for many aspiring nurses:

  • Shorter Duration: ADN programs typically take two years to complete, allowing graduates to enter the workforce more quickly than those pursuing a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN). This means that students can start earning money and gaining valuable experience sooner.
  • Lower Cost: The cost of an ADN program is generally lower than that of a BSN program, making it a more affordable option for many students. Lower tuition fees mean less student debt, allowing graduates to start their careers with a firmer financial footing.
  • Quick Entry into the Workforce: Graduates of ADN programs can begin working as RNs sooner, gaining valuable experience and earning an income while potentially continuing their education. This immediate entry into the workforce can be particularly beneficial in addressing the ongoing nursing shortage.
  • Flexibility: Many ADN programs offer flexible scheduling options, including evening and weekend classes, which can accommodate working students or other commitments. This flexibility makes it easier for diverse groups of students to pursue their nursing education.
  • Solid Foundation: Despite the shorter duration, ADN programs provide a comprehensive education in nursing, covering essential areas such as patient care, pharmacology, and clinical practice. This solid foundation prepares graduates to handle the demands of the nursing profession effectively.
  • Career Advancement Opportunities: While an ADN allows graduates to start working as RNs, it also opens the door to further educational opportunities. Many nurses with an ADN pursue RN-to-BSN programs or advanced degrees, enabling them to specialize in areas like nurse management, education, or advanced practice nursing.

Career opportunities

The demand for RNs is expected to grow significantly , offering ADN graduates a stable and rewarding career path. A wide range of career opportunities in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, and community health centers, plus specialization options are available, allowing RNs to focus on areas such as OBGYN, emergency room, pediatric, or neonatal nursing.

Furthering your education

An ADN can also be a means for further education and career advancement. Many ADN graduates choose to pursue RN-to-BSN programs afterward, allowing them to earn a bachelor’s degree in Nursing while continuing to work as RNs. Advanced education options, such as Master’s degrees in nursing , are also available for those interested in specialized roles or leadership positions.

Support where you need it

It is essential to seek support where you need it. At University of Bridgeport, we offer academic advising, tutoring, and career services to help students navigate their education and transition into the workforce. Access to state-of-the-art facilities, simulation labs, and clinical placement opportunities enhance the learning experience. Student organizations and peer support groups provide additional resources and a sense of community.

University of Bridgeport’s Associate Degree in Nursing

An Associate Degree in Nursing provides graduates with a comprehensive and efficient way to becoming a registered nurse in just two years. With a blend of classroom instruction, clinical experience, and support services, University of Bridgeport’s ADN program successfully prepares graduates for rewarding careers in healthcare.
