Ecosystems. What is an Ecosystem?  An ecosystem is a plant and animal community made up of living and nonliving things that interact with each other.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is a necessity, not a luxury.

Biodiversity is the variety of animals and plants life in a region.

It also affords us a "life support system."

Ecosystems and  habitats are made up by biodiversity in sustaining the fundamental living resources.

With biodiversity:

  • Our soil is enriched,
  • Our water is purified,
  • Our ecosystems are composed.

Why is it happening?

   ★   Population growth

 ★  Consumption

★ habitat destruction + wildlife trade

★ ecological overshoot ★

How is it Connected to Climate Change?

Animal Death resulting from extreme weather; shelter = destroyed

Extreme climate change

Rapid and extreme climate change ->affects ecosystem and species’ ability to adapt therefore biodiversity loss increases.

  • the food chain on which we depend, water sources, medicine may change , recede or disappear .

<-Water pollution

How can we drink?

3 main pressures on biodiversity:

  • land use changes
  • industrial pollution
  • Global climate change

It will affect animals such as polar bears because it's hard for them to adapt new weather and it may cause death.

What are the social, economic and environmental impacts?

  •   Human affect biodiversity by:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/Smokestack_in_Detroit.jpg

These changes can affect individual species negatively and cause a reduction in biodiversity.

It is necessary for humans to begin to alter their conduct.

Environment

Limited Biodiversity -> Animal extinction

What are we doing about it?

*achieve a reduction of current rate of biodiversity loss at levels:

-national level

as a contribution to poverty relief and to the benefit of all life on Earth.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2179176502/

What else are we doing about it?

Some people are trying to prove that:

-income through biological preservation = possible!

-conserving biodiversity = bigger income generation

http://www.flickr.com/photos/george_eastman_house/2871166780/

What should we do to improve it?

  • Reuse Recycle Reduce
  •  Tell others  à  Awareness  à  starts from education
  •  Use environmentally friendly products
  •  Not drive car; avoid idling, use public transport more often
  • Using less electricity/plastic
  •  Buy sustainable seafood

Take Public transports

Buy sustainable seafood

Ways to keep our ocean alive:

At restaurant or at home:

  • choose fish which are sustainable {avoiding endangered like Bluefin Tuna or Northsea cod}

The single biggest threat to the overall health of the marine environment and its ability to support life on Earth.
