Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

They pick me up when things get tough and cheer for me even louder than I do whenever I reach a milestone! With them by my side, every day of life becomes an adventure full of joys big or small.

My friends are a beautiful bouquet of uniqueness – a diverse array of personalities, passions and capabilities. But the most precious petals in this bunch have to be their kindness, loyalty and unwavering support for me through thick and thin!

Spending quality time with my friends is an absolute blast! From playing sports, to watching movies and discovering new places, it’s never a dull moment. Even when we don’t agree 100%, our friendship always manages to pull us through whatever challenge comes its way.

I’m continually blessed with the most remarkable friends who constantly encourage and support me through thick and thin. They lift my spirits, help make me a better version of myself, as well as motivate me to really reach for all that life has to offer, it’s truly priceless! Don’t you? For me traveling opens my mind to new ideas, new adventures and lets me learn. I like to learn as well and when I travel I get to learn about different people, their cultures and their way of thinking. 

When I was young I was able to travel across Canada. Even in a western country, there are different cultures and I got to see Ottawa and Montreal up close. The French Canadians are not the same as the Western Canadian and my experience was fabulous. 

Going to the east was not as exciting as traveling through the Rocky Mountains though. The grandeur and beauty of that mountain range defy description. Snow-capped almost all year round, these mountains stood tall and majestic. 

They even have a glacier in their midst that is something to behold. Lake Louise stands out as well with its multi-colored water and mountain surroundings. But as good as those trips were, they do not compare to when I left Canada and traveled to Asia for the first time. 

Here I was traveling to a completely different culture than I had experienced as a child. My itinerary was taking me to the land of the Morning Calm and was known in earlier days as the hermit kingdom. 

This was going to be a new experience for me. The plane took off going in a northerly direction as airlines like to fly close to land. This is a good policy as the passengers get to see the grand western mountains from a new angle. 

Up to and past Mt. Mckinley the snow-covered peaks glistened under the sun’s rays… That look was made better by the contrasting dark green colors of the forests that make their home throughout the mountains. 

Then as we were flying over the north Pacific ocean the realization set in that I was in for an adventure. The bright blue waters of the Pacific made the Japanese islands look like little diamonds set on a velvet cloth. 

A few minutes later we were passing over the eastern coastline of Korea, with its tall waves beating against the rocky shores. It was too late to turn back. We were almost to our destination, Seoul. 

After we had landed and I found my way to my hotel. The great thing about Korea is that it has signed both in English and Korean making it easy for foreigners to navigate to their destinations without hassle. 

The taxi drivers were polite and very helpful, plus they did not try to rip me off. They drove me directly to my hotel and helped me get inside. In looking out my hotel window I could see what made Seoul so attractive. It was a modern city filled with history. 

A history the Korean people were proud of. That pride was found in the lack of an entry fee to their wonderful museums. Even their ancient palaces were not that expensive to enter. Seoul. Has at least 3 of them within its borders. 

The main palace, Geongbokgung, is backed by Seoul’s mountains giving it a picture-perfect quality that is astounding. It took some time to see it all. After I left the palace I headed to the first national treasure of Korea, Nam Dae Mun or the southern gate. 

It stood tall and proud and it would be the entrance you would come through if you were traveling to Seoul from the south. The wide Han River is quietly weaved its way through the city supply the residents with pure mountain fresh water every day. 

There is too much to list here that both Seoul and Korea have to offer but it was a trip of a lifetime and one I will always remember. It wasn’t a vacation nor an adventure. It was a true travel experience.

Each school planning for trips is as a recreational and educational way, supervised by social workers and school supervisors, who planning visits, ticketing, bus booking, etc.

I went on a school trip to (name of the city) of (Governorate name). of (city area in km) and (population number) approximately.

I prepared my small bag and put sandwiches, juice and water for the trip. I went to sleep early to wake up early to be full of energy on the journey.

We rode the bus in front of the school in the early morning and we left our parents and friends who did not come with us.

The bus driver displayed a documentary about the city we were going to visit and the tour supervisor told us about the directions and instructions we should follow and how to act in case of lost. He provided us emergency numbers and asked us to write them in a paper and keep in our pocket.

We arrived at our destination and started visiting the (museum name) which is a large museum featuring many important items that tell us the history of the city.

Then we went to visit the open museum which is an open area with many beautiful items.

Then we went to visit the important landmarks of the city.

The last stop of the trip was to visit the amusement park, a recreational city with lots of games.

The supervisor gave us two hours to enjoy our time, play the games we want and assemble before the door of the amusement park in preparation for riding the bus and back to our city.

We gathered two hours later in front of the amusement park door, the supervisor checked everyone’s presence and then we boarded the bus and returned to our city.

It was a beautiful day we enjoyed it a lot and we saw many of the city’s famous sights.

We learned a lot about its history and the history of its inhabitants.

Finally, we reached our city late at night. Our families were waiting for us.

It’s great to enjoy a little bit away from school and home for rejuvenation and energy, and this is exactly what happened. After working hard and excelling in school, I was able to go out on an unforgettable school trip. Through this trip, I was able to define my goals and benefit greatly from them.

This was an excursion to one of the seminars of the great Steve Jones. Just being in the midst of this huge crowd of scientists, inventors and businessmen made me know what I want to become in the future, and what are my upcoming priorities.

On this journey I was able to find answers to many of my questions and found the inspiration I wanted. Now I want to become in the future an inventor of something useful that benefits humanity and achieve great success for me, whether material or moral, through fame.

It is wonderful to know the importance of technology to society and how we inevitably go to it and the development of all means of services around us. And with just a little bit of clinging to the dream and fighting for it like Steve did, I can certainly succeed too.

Oh my gosh, I can’t describe the beauty of nature that I enjoyed during my last school trip. There is a very big difference between the constant presence between the big and fast industrial life and the relaxation in the vast gardens and parks that do not contain any noise.

It is great to go through this experience and go to one of the most beautiful parks that contain very beautiful gardening works and organized views of trees and roses.

The wonderful engineering work that I saw in the park is one of the best landscapes that my friends and I enjoyed watching.

I would very much like to write an article about my experience in the last school tour, and point out the things I liked the most.

I find this tour very different from many of our previous tours. Previously, the tour was in only one place, and curiosity and enthusiasm ended before the tour ended.

But certainly this was different when we were able to visit many places in the same tour, such as the museum, the garden and the library. All of these places had a different effect.

We find when visiting the museum and meeting one of the guides working in the museum that he has that interesting and funny way of explaining the holdings. It makes you want to know more about its origin and the civilization it comes from.

But due to the lack of time, this made me even more excited, eager to listen. I am also eager to see another place and enjoy. This made it more beautiful and did not leave any way for boredom.

When visiting the library, I was able to sign one of the famous books and see some of the authors of these books. I always watched this event through movies only. It is great to try this experience and get some interesting and useful books.

But certainly nothing is so wonderful after a long day of listening and paying attention as visiting the park and walking around it to release all that energy.

I cannot describe the beauty of how I felt in the experience of the games and activities that we did inside the park. I can say this was the best school trip experience I’ve ever had.

My Travel Tips for Seeing the World’s Best Places

’Tis the season for vacations, so let me make my pitch that the best travel is not lounging at a beach resort but rather journeying into a different world. We all need relaxation at times, but nothing beats the thrill of a trip of discovery and the education that comes with it.

Mark Twain once observed that “travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness.” In that spirit, I’ve long urged young Americans to take gap years before college or junior years abroad . (One high school reader of such an essay, Spencer Cohen , ended up taking a gap year partly in Japan, became an Asia hand and is now a colleague at The Times.)

Still, there are risks, less of violence (the U.S. has more guns than other countries) than of having your passport and credit cards stolen. So I preach both travel and prudence, and on a recent book tour , I found myself often asked about travel advice I had mentioned in my memoir. So let me share a few tips for the vacation season:

1. The most memorable travel often involves encountering something unfamiliar, so consider escaping the herds parading through Paris. Indonesia, Ghana, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Morocco and Bolivia are generally safe, far cheaper than Europe and offer indelible experiences. I’ll never forget venturing deep into the Potosí silver mines in Bolivia, exploring a grim slave castle in Ghana that dispatched prisoners to slavery in America, learning how to use a blowgun while staying with families in their longhouse in Indonesia’s Borneo rainforest. The world awaits us!

2. Some of the places that you find most culturally distant may be right here in the United States. A teenager from an affluent family in the New York or Boston areas would step into a different world by taking a ranch job in Wyoming. And this is the kind of travel that is not only affordable but actually pays for the experience.

3. Be spontaneous. As a law student in 1982, I spent five weeks backpacking through the Middle East and met a couple of Palestinian students on a West Bank bus; I jumped off at their stop and spent a memorable day with them in their refugee camp hearing about their frustrations and dreams (I wrote about reuniting with them last fall). And while on a bus in the Sahara, I accepted an Algerian man’s invitation to visit his village — which turned out to be a warren of underground burrows to protect families from the extreme heat, the most unusual residential architecture I’ve ever seen. In each case, I was with a couple of friends, which made it seem safer to put myself in the company of people I’d just met, and obviously one should be as judicious as one is spontaneous.

4. One occasionally hears that adventurous travel is just for men, but some of the most accomplished foreign correspondents and overseas photographers are women, as are a majority of Peace Corps volunteers. As a man, I don’t face the same risks that women face, but I have seen female travelers — disproportionately from Australia and New Zealand — thriving as they backpack through the most remote places. Some have suggested the purchase of a cheap wedding ring; a $20 band and a fabricated husband can help keep pests away.

Earlier this summer, we wanted to know about all the wedding moments that went sideways for our readers. We asked them to tell us their funniest wedding stories , and they really dove for the bouquet on this one, sharing more than 85 memorable moments of matrimony.

Here are some of your stories that really took the cake (in some cases, quite literally), lightly edited for clarity.

First, let's start with the most New England responses ...

A bro speaks now.

"My husband and I got married in Boston on July 9, 2016, at the Exchange Conference Center in the Seaport. Our ceremony was at the water's edge with boats passing by in the background.

"When we were in the middle of our vows, holding hands, gazing into each others' eyes, being serious about dedicating our lives to each other, a boat of drunk guys went by and one of them shouted out 'DON'T DO IT!' Loudly and clearly . I mean, talk about timing! We laughed it off and DID do it. We've now been happily married for 8 years!"

A little too wild

"We got married in the White Mountains in a field — not a mowed meadow or lawn, but a legitimate field, with long grass and bugs. The entire wedding party, guests and all, had to trudge through the field to the center, where the justice of the peace and two musicians waited. As my sister (my maid of honor) and I made our way through the field, a grasshopper flew up my gown. My sister had to kneel down to try to get it out, shaking and lifting my dress in front of all our waiting guests.

"Later, we had the reception in the common area of a resort condo complex, with barbecue catered by a local restaurant. After dinner, plates were cleared, and leftovers and trash were put in the dumpster. Around 10 p.m., a guest came running back into the room to announce that a black bear was gorging on our leftovers."

"He — and his little 'getting married' sign — had to be carried mid-meltdown, while the other ring bearer proudly walked down the goat-free aisle."

Muddling through a first dance

"My wife and I were married in Vermont at a vineyard in May under a tent. It was one of the wettest Mays ever, and there was a layer of mud covering the dance floor. We decided to go ahead with our first dance. The first time I go to spin her, she slips and lands on her back in the mud. The crowd goes wild. I pick her up and without thinking throw myself in the mud to join her in the fun.

Waiting in a winter wonderland

"My wife and I decided to marry in January in New England. Two days before the wedding, a major snowstorm hit and temperatures plummeted. Undeterred by a few guests not being able to make the trip, we held our reception at a local golf course. About an hour in, the pipes froze, and the only toilet still in service was in the bridal suite. The venue compensated by offering us an open bar, which exacerbated the urgency of the situation. All the men were using the outdoor snowbanks, while the ladies waited in line in the bridal suite."

"My beautiful rum wedding cake from a North End bakery slid from my back seat onto the floor of the car during a quick stop on the way to Connecticut the day before the wedding. I had to re-create the cake with a new batch of frosting the night before — and got drunk drinking some of the rum in the process.

"The cake looked beautiful, except for the fact that one side was darker than the other due to the fact I was a bit liberal when I poured the rum. But the guests raved about it!"

Keeping the flame alive.

"My twin sister and her wife got married at Trillium in the fall. They made the space their own with flowers, green table runners, handmade pottery — and many small, romantically-lit votive candles. While I was on the floor dancing, my purse got knocked off my chair and fell onto the floor. My 73-year-old aunt, who is historically a little clumsy, found the purse and threw it on the table so it wouldn't get lost or trampled on. Very thoughtful!

"A few minutes later, my mom turned to her and asked, 'What's that smell?' They both looked down and realized my aunt had put my purse right on top of an open flame. They quickly doused it with water and patted the flame out, but the strap was fully melted and table cloth a little singed. She bought me a replacement for Christmas, but the real gift is having a pretty hilarious story about the time my aunt accidentally started a fire on my sister's big day."

'You can hang out with all the boys'

"At my cousin-in-laws' wedding in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, there was another party happening at a backyard nearby and there was really loud music. So, when the bride and groom were saying their vows, the party next door was blasting the 'YMCA.' They embraced it and started dancing, too, while reciting their words of love. Everyone joined in!"

"We were both young and lacking funds, so [we hired] an amateur photographer — the price was right. However, he brought only one camera and, of course, it broke. We have only one photo from our wedding. It's a Polaroid shot someone took of my 90-year-old Aunt Fanny, standing up and looking confused. We've decided that picture really says it all!"

"My cousin Bob and his bride Kelly's wedding reception was at Kelly's parents' house in Woodstock, Vermont. When it came time to toss the bouquet, Kelly got up on the house‘s elevated deck, and the single women clustered below.

"My friend offered to make the cake for our very DIY wedding, and it came out great. As she was carrying it, singlehandedly, to the table to be cut, one of our groomsmen was clearing a path for her. I heard a hush fall over the crowd and when I turned around the cake was on the ground and my poor friend was on her knees.

"We walked over and with another pal helped flip it back over and carried it to the table. We ate cake off of each others hands and declared it 'still good.' All of our guests started chanting 'It's! Still! Good!' over and over.

"We served it, knowing the floor had been mopped twice while we were decorating the space.

"Hours later, 'Black Betty' was playing. The crowd was stomping, and the table the cake was on collapsed. Some family members are still horrified that the cake fell, twice."

"During the cake cutting at my wedding, I was extremely nervous and apparently, a bit too enthusiastic. The decorative plastic handle snapped off the knife and the blade flipped up, cutting my husband's ring finger pretty deeply. My cousin, an ER-nurse, had to intervene.

"In all of our sparkler exit photos, you can see my husband dancing out with a huge bandage wrapped around his finger. I like to joke that he can take his ring off if he wants, but the scar is a permanent reminder of my love."

"During our wedding ceremony, my husband and I were asked to kneel at the altar for a blessing by the minister. When we knelt, we heard people chuckling.

"I was a guest at a wedding of a colleague. Several of us from the office were invited. I happened to get to the reception last. When I went to get my seating card, the original table number was scratched out with pencil and replaced with another table number. So, I went to 'new' table, and sat down with my boss and her husband (no fun!).

"I looked over at my 'old' table to see one of my colleagues and his wife with big smiles, waving at me. They switched our tables and I got stuck with the boss! Brilliant move on their part, not so much for me!"
