Tweeting, Instagramming, Facebooking: It’s become like breathing to us. We upload and geo-tag and post – we’re all basically living out personal  Truman Show -esque existences, documenting what we look like, where we go, and what we do. And yesterday, YouTube comedian Jack Vale proved it .

“I use social media every day and all day given the nature of my work as a prankster and comedian, and being aware of the detailed information you can get when reviewing someone’s ‘status’, we wanted to see how hard it would be to get this information from people on the street,” says Vale, explaining his motives for conducting the experiment. Based on the video, there’s clearly enough information on  anyone  on the Internet, if you know where and how to look for pertinent data.

“One was happy when I revealed it was a joke but the other guy was upset because he claimed I ‘invaded his privacy.'”

Oftentimes, we forget that too much of anything is bad – in this case, it’s sharing personal information online. The experimented conducted by Vale explored just how much information on people can be culled from various social networking sites. If you haven’t seen it (go watch it), Vale does a David Blaine-like imitation, approaching strangers and reading off details about their lives as if he were a mind-reader or prescient. In reality, all he did was scour social networks for geo-tagged posts in his area, find the unsuspecting users, and read to them details they’d posted.

Most of the people who appeared in the video saw the hilarity in Vale’s stunt, and perhaps made a beeline for their own privacy settings. Vale says the most memorable reaction he got from targets came from the two subjects at the end of the video. “One was happy when I revealed it was a joke but the other guy was upset because he claimed I ‘invaded his privacy.’ I’m pretty sure he’s mistaken since what he posted was not private and he posted it for the whole world to see,” he says. The guy in question even left with a threat, saying he’d call the police.

The video’s takeaway lesson certainly hits home: Even the most careful Web savvy among us are susceptible to this type of “security breach.” Sure, it’s just a random guy approaching you who knows your recent life story, but you can see from the victims’ reactions, it’s frightening.

Even Vale went through an eye-opening experience while filming his video. “As a Dad, it did make me think about social media and how we use it a little differently. You need to be careful and a lot of times you need to be careful even when you think your settings are set to private. People can still get your information through posts of your friends, family, [and other contacts].”

And while Vale reveals that he personally discovered a multitude of ways to use our social media activity for potential future “experiments,” he says you shouldn’t worry about appearing in one of his stunts anytime soon. “I’m happily married with five kids so I won’t be hiding in a tree in your yard tonight. More than likely.”

YouTube creators love to connect with their audience through the platform’s comments section, but it’s not much fun when posts left by viewers are offensive, bullying, or just plain nasty.

YouTube has implemented various measures over the years to try to ensure such comments stay off its video-sharing platform, or at least get pushed down the list to reduce visibility, but this week it’s launching a new feature aimed at encouraging people to think twice before posting a potentially offensive comment.

YouTube says its service is up and running again after an outage that lasted several hours on Wednesday, November 11.

The problems started at around 4 p.m. PT and lasted until around 6:30 p.m. PT.

Google is bringing back human moderators to oversee YouTube content, taking over from automated systems that were given more responsibilities at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

YouTube revealed in late August that in the three months prior, 11.4 million videos have been removed from the platform for violating its Community Guidelines. This is the highest number of videos taken down from YouTube over a three-month period since the service was launched in 2005, and it was attributed to the higher reliance on A.I. as the pandemic prevented human reviewers from going to work.

Experiment: Does the 7-Second TikTok Challenge Actually Work?

TikTokers are sharing an intriguing new theory: you get a ton of reach with videos that are a maximum of seven seconds long.

While dancing, lip-synching, mom-pranking, and trying to make “goblincore” a thing are among the more popular things to do on TikTok, for ambitious creators and social media managers, there’s one activity that trumps them all: trying to game the TikTok algorithm .

At this point, TikTok has been downloaded more than 2 billion times , with over 689 million active users globally. It’s the fastest-growing social media platform in the world, and making it onto the For You Page (or “FYP,” as TikTok users far busier than me say) is an opportunity to get a taste of a massive, highly engaged new audience.

The For You Page is where likes, views, and new followers are found; where TikTok legends are born! No wonder so many people are obsessed with trying to crack the code (and why we’ve spent so much time experimenting with TikTok hacks ourselves!)

So when we heard about a new challenge that allegedly offered a shortcut to getting on the FYP, we jumped on it. Known as the Seven-Second Challenge , TikTok creators were reporting incredible engagement, simply by posting text-heavy, seven-second videos featuring trending audio clips.

Was it really that easy? Or just a coincidence? The Hootsuite social team warmed up their typing thumbs, cued up a hot new track, and bravely hit record to find out.

It’s a hack to beat the TikTok algorithm that seems almost too easy — suspicious, even! No wonder most of the videos tagged with the trending TikTok hashtag #sevensecondchallenge include text that comments on the whether or not the challenge itself actually works. Even the Red Sox (baseball, maybe you’ve heard of it?) are giving it a whirl.

Some #sevensecondchallenge videos have achieved millions of views; others had a far smaller reach. But to really judge if this hypothesis was true, the Hootsuite team would have to put its own account to the test.

Methodology

Three key ingredients are required for the seven-second TikTok challenge:

  • A seven-second video. According to the theory, the actual content of this video doesn’t really matter. It could be a rainbow over a ball stadium, a mirror shot of your best athleisure outfit, or footage of you eating popcorn out of a tub . Follow your bliss!
  • A trending sound clip. TikTok already prioritizes videos with trending audio anyways on its FYP (at least with the latest TikTok algorithm ), so this component is key! Don’t try to be an original here: bow to the whims of the masses!
  • “Lots” of text. There doesn’t seem to be a consistent recommendation for how long “lots” is, but most people trying this hack write about a paragraph — basically, something that might take seven seconds to read.

“Some people post videos of people literally doing nothing, other videos are informational,” says Hootsuite social marketing coordinator Eileen Kwok. “People get creative with it, which is the fun part of TikTok.”

With this in mind, Kwok and Hootsuite’s social media team created three different videos to post and observe.

The first featured Owly, a ton of text, and a trending song.

Video two featured a Hootsuite team member tapping away on her computer, with text about a “productivity hack,” and a trending song.

Video three showcased another Hootsuite team member working on a laptop poolside, with text explaining the seven-second trend. This time, however, the video used original audio of someone counting down to seven instead of a trending song.

Now, we turn to TikTok analytics — and our TikTok pro Kwok! — to see if this trio of videos were a #sevensecondsuccess.

TL;DR: The seven-second challenge resulted in longer-than-average watch times and farther reach on the For You Page.

Compared to the average number of views a Hootsuite TikTok video gets, the first two videos, which used trending audio, performed well — the second in particular, with almost half a million views.

Also noteworthy: the watch time on these hot slices of content.

But what really stood out to Kwok about this experiment was how many of these views came from the For You Page.

“It’s the holy grail of TikTok,” says Kwok. “The higher the percentage of FYP views, the better it does.”

Here’s a closer look at the analytics for each video:

For the Owly video, 50% of the views came from the For You page: evidence that it got some serious reach.

Even more impressive was the FYP performance of the Manager Tip video, because 100% (!) of the views came from the For You Page. (In fact, the Manager Tip video is still performing well even weeks later, with likes and views increasing every day.)

In comparison, the Poolside video, which garnered the lowest stats of all three of these experimental masterpieces, only had 36% of views come from the For You Page.

There were a couple of factors distinguishing the Poolside video from the other two that could account for this dip in performance. Number one, it used original audio instead of trending audio, and number two, the text didn’t really offer much of a takeaway.

In other words: it veered away from the recommended structure of the seven-second challenge, and may just be evidence that this hack, unlike so many other supposed TikTok quick fixes, does actually work.

What do the results mean?

From this little experiment, we’ve found decent evidence of some new TikTok practices to help amp up your engagement and reach.

Longer text = longer watch times

It’s not surprising that a paragraph of text encourages viewers to stick with your video longer — they’re likely to be tempted to read the whole thing. Pique that curiosity and reap the engagement benefits.

“The more text you have on the screen, the better. It increases watch time,” says Kwok. (Looks like we’re not just scientists over here on the Experiments Blog … we’re math wizards, too!)

But… what the text says matters

Yes, longer text makes a difference. But it shouldn’t just be gibberish. (Sorry to any Minions or Sims reading this.) “There needs to be some point to it, whether it’s funny or cheeky or informative,” says Kwok.

The first two videos offered some entertainment value, while the text of video number three was kind of like the copy from a chain email, which could possibly account for the lack of engagement here.

The Manager Tip video in particular garnered a startling number of shares, likely because it had a clear takeaway (even if it was probably-maybe-sort-of a joke). Videos with lots of shares get an algorithmic boost — TikTok wants everyone to get a taste of share-worthy content! — so consider this your incentive to use text that offers helpful hot tips.

Keep the video short

One of the reasons this challenge may be working is that it keeps things brief. On TikTok, brevity is king.

“I’m not saying it has to be seven seconds, but shorter is better,” advises Kwok. “People have short attention spans, especially on TikTok.” However long the video is in total, you’re not delivering value in those first three seconds, you’re probably too late.

… and keep them watching

The algorithm favors videos with high watch times, so if there’s a way to hook the viewer and keep them watching, do it. The lots-of-text trick is one way to prevent them from skipping past your video, but generally speaking, creating engaging video content that’s entertaining and informative is going to serve you well.

What TikTok users consider entertaining and informative, though, is maybe a matter for another experiment.

“There’s no right answer,” laughs Kwok. “I’ll spend so long on a video I think is so funny and get nothing, and then a video I spend no time on does super well.”

An egg "experiment" has exploded online, and social media users have been questioning whether the viral trick is an experiment at all.

Yana Kuzmich, a digital creator who posts under the handle @awesome_motherhood, was one of many users who shared an Instagram video of herself trying the trick.

Using just an uncooked egg, toothpaste and aluminum foil, Kuzmich and her son "created" a jelly-looking egg.

The video garnered more than 30 million views.

The video shows Kuzmich   placing an egg in a bowl and applying toothpaste to its exterior.

Kuzmich then takes a sheet of aluminum foil and covers the bowl, leaving it to sit for 24 hours.

Once the time is "up," her son then picks up the egg from the bowl — revealing a jelly egg. 

He beams with excitement as he picks it up and tosses it around.

VIRAL FLOWER HACKS ARE BUSTED BY FLORAL EXPERT

Jennifer Mencias-Munoz, a health science educator at the Children's Museum in Houston, Texas, told Fox News Digital that the experiment would never work with the two components that are reportedly used. 

"In science, we would call [toothpaste] a base so it's the opposite of an acid. The egg is also a base. When you put these two together, we don't really see a reaction," she said. 

"You would see a reaction if you used a chemical that is the opposite. Like, for example, acid to the egg."

"When you put these two together, we don't really see a reaction."

Mencias-Munoz said her team has presented a similar experiment at the museum, creating a jelly-like egg.

"You dip a raw egg in vinegar and you leave it for 24 hours, if not more," she said.

"After that time, what happens is the acid, inside the vinegar, breaks down the eggshell that's made of calcium carbonate. So it's going to break it down. And then you're going to get this not necessarily clear, but kind of like a translucent egg. And it's going to feel a lot more like rubbery because you've broken down that membrane of the egg."

Don Riefler, a science educator at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in Indiana, agreed.

"Eggshells are almost entirely made of calcium carbonate (same thing that Tums, chalk, limestone, and snail/clamshells are made of)," Riefler told Fox News via email.

The "calcium carbonate is actually an ingredient in toothpaste!" he added. 

"It’s a mild abrasive they put in to help remove crud from your teeth. If there’s no chemical reaction between it and the other ingredients in toothpaste in the toothpaste itself, there certainly wouldn’t be one with an eggshell."

"That’s a fake egg, but I like the video and idea."

Social media users took to the comments section to hash out whether they believed the experiment to be legitimate or not.

"Tried twice just to make sure. Ruined two perfectly good eggs," one woman commented.

"If you can’t tell it's fake, I am deeply concerned," said one user.

It appears one woman fell for the prank, commenting, "Thank you for sharing - can't wait to try."

"Trust issues starting," said another user.

"That’s a fake egg , but I like the video and idea," said another.

Kuzmich admitted to Fox News Digital in an email that the video was a joke.

She said she came across the trick online and that her son was "happily surprised."

Several people have attempted the egg-and-toothpaste "experiment" on social media, with some truthfully revealing that it is indeed fake — while others pretended the rubber egg was the result.

One TikTok user not only debunked the trick — but revealed where anyone can purchase the rubber egg online.

Man behind viral AI-generated Kamala Harris video tells Scripps News it was meant as parody

A parody video based on an ad produced for the Kamala Harris campaign received millions of views after Elon Musk shared it on X. It triggered controversy because Musk did not mention that the video was a parody, or created with the help of artificial intelligence.

The video, created by an account by the name “Mr. Reagan,” is about 2 minutes in length and features a convincing AI audio track of the vice president’s voice.

While the voice in the video sounds like Harris, it contains numerous things that she would not say, including negative statements about President Joe Biden, her candidacy, and her policy positions. The video does, however, include some real clips of statements Harris has made on-camera, mashing up authentic content with artificial content.

The “Mr. Reagan” account is run by Chris Kohls, who makes conservative-leaning online videos and content. Kohls confirmed to Scripps News that he used AI to create the voice in the video, but did not reveal the software program used. Kohls also told Scripps it took him around 12 hours to create the parody ad. Kohls said he intended the video to be humorous, claiming there was no sinister intent.

"Those who are criticizing this video by calling it deceptive are trying desperately to find a way to attack Elon Musk," he said. "It's just a fun video. Leftists need to relax.”

Kohls' original post of the video labeled it as a parody. But as is the case with many things on the internet, the virality of the post took over and that context was lost.

The video went viral after Elon Musk shared it. Musk did not directly retweet or repost the video to include the original text indicating that it is a parody. Instead, he shared the video without that context, simply saying, “This is amazing” with a laughing emoji. The version of the video embedded in Musk’s tweet from Friday, without any label indicating that the video is AI-generated, has over 130 million views.

By sharing the video, Musk appears to have violated his own company's policy on manipulated and synthetic media. The policy clearly states that the dissemination of any synthetic video that could deceive or confuse the public and lead to harm is not allowed. Media is considered in violation of this policy if it is “significantly and deceptively altered, manipulated, or fabricated.” There are also currently no community notes added to the post. Scripps News reached out to X for comment and received an auto-generated response: “Busy now, please check back later.”

A Harris campaign spokesperson told Scripps News in a statement: "We believe the American people want the real freedom, opportunity, and security Vice President Harris is offering; not the fake, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump."

This type of fake or AI-generated audio or video is something that lawmakers in Washington, D.C., have been worried about — with many fearing it could be used to manipulate the outcome of the November election. In March, Sen. Amy Klobuchar introduced legislation that would ban deceptive deepfakes of federal candidates and require disclaimers on AI-generated political ads.

She tweeted on Sunday , “If Elon Musk and X let this go and don’t label it as altered AI content, they will not only be violating X’s own rules, they’ll be unleashing an entire election season of fake AI voice and image-altered content with no limits, regardless of party.”

Almost all videos that go viral reflect these features on YouTube. Take it from the 52 experts we talked to for this piece to learn how they make their YouTube videos go viral.

Of these respondents, 46% are in the B2C services or products industry, 40% are agencies or consultants working with marketing, digital, media companies, and 14% are in the B2B services or product field.

What Types of Videos Go Viral on YouTube?

Funny videos have the best chance to go viral, according to the respondents we talked to. This is followed by challenge videos and prank videos.

These insights come from folks who have had their videos go viral. About 42% of our respondents shared they have 1 to 5 videos that have gone viral. And nearly 37% stated that they don’t have any videos gone viral.

However, it’s important to note here that everyone defines ‘virality’ differently. For the purpose of surveying our respondents for this piece, we defined viral videos as “videos that got millions of views in a few weeks.” However, when we asked companies to share their videos, only a couple met these criteria — telling us virality means different things to different people.

Now for the practical tips that can help you create viral videos on YouTube. Here’s a quick list of these tips, followed by the details:

1. Post high-quality video content consistently

The foundational step to making your YouTube video viral is regularly posting videos on your channel. This works for a handful of reasons, including:

  • Consistent posting teaches you a lot about your audience, their preferences and struggles, and what content resonates with them.
  • Regularly sharing YouTube videos sets the right expectations with your target viewers. They start watching more from your channel because they know they’ll always find high-quality stuff coming from you (better audience retention).

This tip comes from a creator too. In the words of Larisha Bernard of Make It Dairy Free , “The number one tip to gain traction fast on YouTube is to provide quality videos on a consistent basis. YouTube subscribers love when creators show up on a regular basis so it’s not a platform that you want to be inconsistent with.”

So how regularly should you be posting on YouTube? Our research shows that the majority of YouTube creators (half of our respondents) post weekly.

How regularly should you be posting on YouTube?

This is the best cadence as compared to daily or monthly posting because a week means you’ve enough time to ideate, plan, shoot, and publish a good quality video. Plus, it’s also a more memorable YouTube posting frequency than a monthly cadence.

Another key tip here is to “post on the same day and time to establish your audience,” Bernard advises. Essentially, it helps you grow your audience by setting the right expectations with them.

“Beyond that, you want to follow YouTube’s own recommendations that you can find in the YouTube Studio backend and their own creator pages,” adds Bernard.

The example viral video that Bernard shares follows YouTube’s recommendations:

It has 1.2 million views (at the time of writing this). Here’s how:

  • The video’s picture and audio quality are superb . This makes it engaging to watch right away.
  • It speaks to its audience . Throughout the video, the presenter shares his experience with veganism, which resonates with the viewers since it comes from a person who has real experience in the subject.
  • The video shares quick tips . This way, it’s a no-fluff and straight-to-the-point video, which makes it interesting to watch. If anything, moving quickly from one tip to another encourages people to continue watching since it signals there’s a lot of value packed in the content.

2. Create videos on controversial topics

Handshaking.com’s Matt Holmes shares what makes a video go viral on YouTube is a controversial topic.

Holmes explains you should create a video on “a controversial topic that everyone thought they knew the truth!” In this video that Holmes shared, this principle is shown in action:

The virality results? 92k+ views.

The video also showcases a few more pointers that explain why it went viral. Let’s look at them:

  • It starts with a strong hook. Holmes starts the video by quickly answering what’s covered in the video “teach you how to get a smokin’ deal on your next used car purchase.” This instantly tells viewers what the video is about so the interested ones stay to watch till the end.
  • It jumps straight into the meaty bit . Right after Holmes answers the ‘what’s in it for me’ question in the hook, he jumps into step 1 — instead of wasting time.
  • The video quality speaks volumes of its authenticity . The video is shot from a phone, which tells viewers about its credibility (viewers can see Holmes is speaking from the location he’s buying/selling cars from.)

And like the viral video above, this video also jumps from sharing value bites one after the other rather quickly. In doing so, the video encourages its viewers to continue watching.

This helps significantly in making a video go viral. For instance, by signaling YouTube’s algorithm that viewers are not just clicking through to the video but also watching it for a long time (think: improved watch time). As a result, the algorithm pushes it further, increasing its reach on the platform.

3. Network to improve your chances of virality

When asked about how to make YouTube video viral, John Frigo of Best Price Nutrition suggested there’s no proven recipe for it.

“If people could make something go viral and crack that code we’d all be doing it,” Frigo writes.

It’s why Frigo opines, “I don’t think it’s possible to ‘make a video go viral’,” At the same time, Frigo shares a handful of pointers that can possibly help your content gain traction fast.

The first of Frigo’s points is the same as what we’ve covered above: being consistent. Not only does it get you in front of the right people, but it’ll also teach you a lot about your audience. This, in turn, assists you in creating better, more audience-relevant and engaging YouTube videos that have a good chance of going viral.

As Frigo puts, “I think if you’re putting out quality content consistently, eventually luck will be on your side, your content will strike a chord with the right audience, and it could go viral.”

To add to this, Frigo points out, “I think sometimes it’s just the right timing or the right person sees your content. For example, if Joe Rogan sees your video and shares it, it’s gonna blow up, that doesn’t necessarily mean that piece of content was that much more amazing than others you’ve done, it just happened to fall in front of him due to algorithms at the right time, and he decided to share it.”

The takeaway from this is simple: engage with your audience and network with other creators. This helps because with other creators and viewers sharing your content as soon as it’s published, the odds of it reaching the right people (such as Joe Rogan in the example above) are high.

Not to forget, when people engage with your content as soon as it goes live, the algorithm understands that it’s high-value and helps push it further thus helping you reach your target audience . All of this takes you a few steps closer to going viral on YouTube.

This video, for example, is the type that’d get instant engagement. No wonder, it has 42.3k+ views: 

So what’s different about it?

  • It starts with an emotionally engaging hook. The video opens with someone putting a smelling salt in front of another person and they react immediately to it. The real reaction instantly engages viewers, making them wonder what the video is about, so they continue watching.
  • The intro to the company and video is succinct. Where most brands go wrong is that they go on and on about their company in the videos they create. In this video though, the presenters introduce Best Price Nutrition in only a few seconds after showing a few clips of what’s covered in the video (read: after setting the stage). The video then proceeds into the meat of the matter, testing a new product.

4. Tap into subject matter expertise and distribute your video

“First, we brought in an expert to help with the content of our video. He was one of most knowledgeable for the topic we were talking about,” notes Jeff Moriarty from Moriarty’s Gem Art talking about how they made their video go viral on YouTube.

This video that Moriarty talks about has over 6 million views:

Here are a few factors that help its virality besides featuring an expert:

  • It uses engaging music to hold viewers’ attention . And instead of interrupting the viewing experience with a narrator’s voice, the video features easy-to-read subtitle text to educate about the gem being faceted.
  • It shows behind-the-scenes content. This type of content is always interesting to watch since it shows viewers how things are done, which taps into their curiosity to encourage them to continue watching.

Yet another factor that Moriarty attributed to the success of this video — content distribution.

“We shared the video on Reddit under sub Reddits that were related to the video we created.”

In short, know where your audience is then share your YouTube videos on those platforms to get the content right in front of them.

5. Leverage trends to create more viral videos

“The clients I work with have videos that go viral when they create content that hits right as a trend is on the rise,” observes Branch & Bramble’s Sarah Walsh.

“Trend forecasting, as well as understanding what your audience is looking for by doing long-tail keyword research, helps YouTube creators attract their audience and appear at the top of search results.”

You’ll also want to spend some time on the platform and study viral videos. Eventually, you’ll start identifying trends. But there’s one thing you need to bear in mind for this: identifying and forecasting trends takes work. So you should be ready to put in some work before you start seeing results.

6. Tap into creating engaging bite-sized video content

“I made a Short video for YouTube, landing right on the boosted algorithm and using some high-ranking marketing keywords, the video was set viral,” shares Simon Brisk of Click Intelligence .

“This year is all about short video clips,” Brisk notes. “TikTok has given other social media sites a run for their money which is why all of them are now giving a tough competition to the short-video platform. YouTube has introduced YouTube shorts as it’s short video feature and the algorithm is heavily promoting them.”

Meaning: this is your chance to shine as the platform is paying lots of attention to the feature.

“Longer videos are currently in the rest-mode on YouTube’s priority list, so if you want to make your YouTube video go viral, make YouTube Shorts,” Brisk suggests.  

“Accompany them with high trending hashtags and add SEO-based researched keywords in the description. These practices help promote the video higher in the algorithm list, and your YouTube video trends.”

You’ll also want to study what makes short videos successful — not just on YouTube but also on TikTok. The reason: studying these videos will help you understand human psychology. This will help you better videos on the whole. Plus, since these videos are short, you can study several at a time. However, note that lengthy videos can also be distilled into shorter ones by making use of a YouTube video summarizer for your personal knowledge or study.

7. Create an enticing video thumbnail

A thumbnail is your video’s featured image. If it’s engaging enough, it encourages viewers to click to watch your video.

Kris Bilski from Astor Film Productions talks about its importance in creating viral YouTube videos. “As a video production agency, we get businesses contacting us every week looking to create viral video campaigns, and there is no ‘One shoe fits all’ when it comes to being successful.

However, that being said there are certain things that we do to help to increase the likelihood of this happening, and we aren’t the only ones doing it, in fact it can be seen by all of the largest YouTubers.

Firstly, you need to pick a thumbnail that is engaging and aimed towards your target audience, something that media giant Netflix has recently picked up on.”

“Netflix has begun changing the thumbnail it uses for various productions tailored towards the user and their preferences, such as more colors and silly faces for a younger audience,” Bilski explains.

“Once you have passed this step we need to focus on engagement, or more importantly watch time. By adding many focus points early on in the video we manage to keep your audience interested and therefore encourage YouTube to show this video to other people, couple this with an emotional attachment and we’re on to a winner!”

Two more tips to improve your video’s watch time:

  • Add subtitles to your videos. This makes them accessible to different people — for instance, those who are hard of hearing and those who prefer consuming videos on their phone, on mute.
  • Arrange videos in your playlists. Put together videos related to a topic in a playlist and add them as ‘watch next’ suggestions for viewers. This helps you keep viewers on your channel, boosting its credibility.

8. Look for inspiration outside of your niche

Lastly, this one’s a hat tip to Jess Percival from Exposure Ninja .

“At Exposure Ninja, we’ve taken the time to study viral creators like Mr. Beast to understand why people click on his videos, why they keep watching, and what he does to make his videos go viral,” Percival shares.

“We’ve then adapted some of these approaches to fit our business and video topics. As a result, our thumbnails and titles have improved, as well as the pacing of our videos.”

“Start now. You can start with just your phone camera and a free editing software. There are plenty of YouTube channels that can help you get started. Our favorites are VidIQ and Filmbooth. You can’t build the skills or confidence if you don’t start.”

To add, Percival advises, “Your videos should always be entertaining. You don’t have to shout into the camera and wave your hands about, but if you’re doing a product demo in a monotone voice then it’s going to be difficult to get people to stick around.”

Most of all, “Bring your passion for your business into your videos and use typography and graphics to add more visual interest to the videos.”

Not to forget, use keyword research to your benefit. Search for terms in the YouTube search box, for example, to see which videos are ranking and how they’ve used the keyword. Also, watch those high-ranking videos on a given keyword to identify an angle that’ll help your video go viral on the same topic.

As Percival puts it, “Make videos that people will search for. It’s unlikely that people will be searching for your brand name right away. They’ll be searching for advice, how-tos, and interesting content. If you’re already creating helpful blog content, you can use that as a ‘script’ for your video.”

Her stiff arms and TikTok account have gone viral, and she has convinced Jason Kelce to become a rugby fan. 

There might not be another athlete having a better time than Ilona Maher thus far at the 2024 Paris Olympics . The Team USA women’s rugby sevens star is going mainstream with the way she runs through opposing players on the field and entertains her fans on social media.

Though the United States lost to France to close out pool play in the women’s Olympic rugby competition on Monday morning, it nonetheless advanced to the knockout stage after beating Japan and Brazil in pool play on Sunday. The Americans still have a chance to earn their first medal since rugby became an Olympic sport again ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Here’s what else you should know about Maher as Team USA chases history in women’s rugby:

Where is Ilona Maher from?

Maher grew up in Burlington, Vermont, where she played field hockey, basketball and softball. She began playing rugby as a 17-year-old.

Where did Ilona Maher go to college?

Maher was a three-time All-America selection at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, and graduated with a degree in nursing. In 2016-17, she was awarded with the MA Sorensen Award , given to the nation's top collegiate women's rugby player.

That year, Maher led Quinnipiac to its second straight NIRA national championship in the fall and its second straight undefeated 7s season in the spring. The Bobcats were 11-1 in the fall and avenged their only loss of the season vs. Central Washington in the national championship match. Quinnipiac was a perfect 15-0 record in the spring, winning 7s championships in tournaments at Harvard, AIC and Brown.

That season, she finished the fall season with 19 tries and a team-high 15 assists in 11 matches played. She also led Quinnipiac in scoring as a sophomore in 2015, with 27 tries and 17 assists.

Maher has revealed previously on social media posts that she is 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds. She is using her platform at the Olympics to share messages emphasizing body positivity.

Maher is 27 years old. She will turn 28 years old on Aug. 12, the day after the closing ceremony at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

On Sunday, she had memorable stiff arms on long tries against both Japan and Brazil that quickly went viral on the internet. How Ilona Maher became TikTok star

Maher’s social media presence really began to blossom when she first appeared with Team USA women’s rugby at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She currently has more than 3 million combined followers on her TikTok and Instagram accounts, a figure that dwarfs more prominent American Olympians like Katie Ledecky and Noah Lyles. This notoriety has reportedly led to endorsement deals with Secret, L’Oréal and New Era. She's also starting a skincare line along with former college swimmer Ann Ragan Kearns.

“First, it was a way to get my message out there, a way to get my team out there,” Maher told The Guardian recently . “Especially in Tokyo, it worked to [encourage] people to tune in to our sport, get eyes on our sport. Then, personally, it’s become a brand-building thing. I’m a female athlete in a sport that’s not very big, especially in America. It’s not a money-making sport …. I want to make sports a career and I don’t think many women can think that way.”

During these Olympics, Maher has already shown off her creativity by producing a TikTok video in which she tested out the Olympic Village cardboard beds and a “Love Island”-inspired video joking about finding a romantic partner while in Paris.

What happened when Ilona Maher met Jason Kelcee?

Maher’s Olympics star turn and her increasingly ubiquitous social media exploits came together Sunday when she had a well-documented interaction with former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Jason Kelce.

Kelce attended Team USA’s win over Brazil and came to the locker room following the match. Maher, in speaking with Kelce, used the opportunity to convince him to join the team’s unofficial bandwagon.

"Women's water polo has Flavor Flav as their superfan," Maher told Kelce in a video posted to her TikTok account. "You are a girl dad. Do you get anything from being our superfan? No. There's no reward, no money, no benefits, I don't think I can get you free stuff."

Kelce stroked his beard, going along with the fun.

"You're a great salesman," he responded. "I am officially a fan of women's rugby, Olympics."

When does Ilona Maher, Team USA women’s rugby sevens play next?

The United States beat Great Britain in the women’s rugby sevens knockout stage Monday and advanced to the medal round for the first time. The Americans will face New Zealand in a semifinal matchup at 9:30 a.m. ET Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the goal medal game at 1:45 p.m. ET. The loser would play for the bronze medal at 1 p.m. ET Tuesday.

All women’s rugby sevens matches at the Olympics will be available via streaming on Peacock and NBCOlympics.com. The quarterfinals Monday will also be broadcast on E! The semifinals, as well as the gold and bronze medal matches, scheduled for Tuesday will be broadcast on USA and E!

Serbia dropped their opening game of the Paris Olympics Group Phase on Sunday, falling to Team USA by a final score of 110-84. Led by Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic, Serbia has talent on their roster, but it was not enough against USA.

Set to face Puerto Rico on Wednesday in their second Group Phase game, Serbia has been back on the practice court preparing for what they hope is their first victory in Paris.

Ahead of this game, a practice video of Jokic and Serbia head coach Svetislav Pesic went viral, as the three-time MVP was seen sharing his input with his head coach:

Jokic played well against USA, finishing with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals, but Serbia was outscored by 26 points in the minutes he sat - while playing USA even in the minutes he played. This was something Serbia could not overcome, as Jokic was able to keep them in the game, but his teammates did not step up.

Still considered the best player in basketball by many, Jokic has won three of the last four NBA MVP awards. The year in this span that Jokic did not win MVP was 2023, as he finished second for the award that year, winning Finals MVP instead.

A special player, Jokic hopes to lead Serbia to a medal at the Olympics.

We call these "hooks" in the YouTube world, and they have the power to grab viewers' attention in the first three seconds. The reason you'd want to grab someone's attention, especially with a Short, is to stop them from swiping to the next video. Swiping away has a negative effect on your content and stops you from going explosively viral.

There isn't much research about Shorts and their performance, but one study adds some clarity. Paddy Galloway discovered that the best-performing Shorts have 70% of people viewing them versus swiping away from them.

To keep viewers engaged, you need an intro that propels them from one scene to the next. Here are 18 viral hooks to help you out!

1. “Have You Heard About..?”

As an opening line, “have you heard about” creates a healthy dose of FOMO on YouTube, which stands for "fear of missing out." No one likes to be excluded, so this hook summons a viewer’s natural curiosity.

For example, have you heard about Sean Andrew (see what we did there? 😉) In the Short below, he immediately asks, “Have you heard about the world’s loneliest toilet?” Most people would say no, and that alone propels them to watch the video. It has over 13 million views!

Other variations of this hook:

  • “Have you ever wondered…”
  • “Is it possible to…”

2. “They Don’t Want You to Know This Secret…”

This hook has enticing qualities, all of which can make a Short go viral in no time. It's got conspiracy, intrigue, and an “us versus them” dynamic happening all at once. As long as you don't use bad clickbait, this hook should get you more YouTube views.

3. “You’ve Never Seen Anything Like This…”

This hook is a straight-up challenge for your audience. You’re asking them to prove whether they know a random fact or not, which sort of feels like a game! It's as if they've been called out, and now they have to answer the call by watching your video.

Mrwhosetheboss got over 3 million views with this hook. He claims that viewers have “never seen a pair of headphones like the HHOGene GPods,” and he may be right. Millions of people stuck around to see what all the hype was about.

4. “I Never Do THIS, and Here’s Why…”

When someone says they never do something, they’re about to share an unpopular opinion. This can be intriguing on YouTube, as many creators repeat the same ideas and beliefs they've heard elsewhere!

Nas Daily has a popular Short using this magic phrase. In it, Dear Alyne says, “I never buy silk, and this is the strange reason why.” The intro must have worked because the video has over 22 million views.

  • “Why I’d never do this…”
  • “Do’s and don’ts when it comes to [topic]..."

5. “This Is the Best Product I’ve Ever Used…”

In just a few words, this hook tells us a valuable recommendation is on the way — maybe even for a life-changing product. But viewers have to keep watching until the product is revealed, making this excellent hook for boosting your Shorts views .

Here’s another example from Mrwhosetheboss. He opens the video by saying, “This is the most powerful charger I’ve ever laid hands on.” Instinctively, you want to keep watching to see which charger he’s talking about. The video has 2.4 million views !

6. “I Was ‘Today Years Old’ When I Found This Out…”

"I was today years old" is a humorous way to reveal something you just learned. Maybe you didn’t know a drink tote from Chik-fil-a holds six beverages instead of four . Perhaps you just realized Ritz crackers have serrated edges for cutting cheese .

Starting a video with this phrase helps you establish common ground and shows that you’re learning alongside the viewer. It’s no wonder a creator like Bentellect got 6 million views explaining that “news” is an acronym (Notable Events, Weather and Sport).

7. “Questions I Get Asked a Lot…”

Do viewers ask you the same questions repeatedly? The next time you make a Short, kick off the video by saying, “Questions I get asked a lot." This implies that you have something relevant to say, and viewers should stick around to hear it.

For example, Hwaniiee got 5 million views answering questions about his experience as a male nurse.

8. “I Asked Google…”

This phrase should catch anyone's attention because most people use Google in 2024. Plus, the phrase “I asked Google” brings so many questions to mind. What did the person search for? What did the results say? Did they learn something funny, shocking, or interesting?

Sean Andrew used this opener to get 400,000 views on a long-jumping video. He asked Google “what the longest jump in history is,” and then attempted to break the long-jump record.

9. “Three Things I Do Before…”

Sometimes, you just can’t beat practicality. If you have a how-to channel, “three things I do before” is the hook you need to provide value and solve problems for your audience.

One example is Erika Kullberg’s “Quick Travel Tips.” She starts out by saying, “Here are three things I do before every flight, coming from a lawyer who travels six months out of the year.” She speaks directly to travelers and builds credibility by saying how often she travels.

10. “Try This to [Accomplish Goal]...”

“Try this” is a typical call to action on YouTube. It catches a viewer’s attention because the phrase empowers them to learn something new.

For example, KeeanSocial intrigued 500,000 people by simply saying, “Try this to get more views on your next YouTube Short.” It’s quick, simple, and works wonders for grabbing attention.

11. “Did You Know That..?”

This hook has an element of surprise, which works well for captivating viewers in the first three seconds. But more than that, it promises a rare piece of knowledge you can’t get if you swipe away!

This intro worked well for Nas Daily, who asked a simple question: “Did you know this book is poisonous?” The Short was so intriguing that it got over 22 million views .

12. “X vs. Y…”

Don’t worry, we’re not talking about math here. “X versus Y” refers to a “this or that” scenario, where you compare two things to see which one is better. Viewers love this intro because it sparks competition.

Again, Mrwhosetheboss sets a great example here. He asks, “The thickest phone case or the thinnest phone case: Which is actually better?” 16 million people couldn’t resist this two-second experiment!

13. “How to Create…”

The value of this hook just can’t be overstated! With three little words, you convince viewers you’re about to solve a problem, teach a skill, and empower them to accomplish their goals.

If you think “how to” content is severely overdone on YouTube, think again. Creators like Lydia Tomlinson are getting over 600,000 views with openers like “how to create festive outfits.”

Another variation of this hook is “how to do [virtually anything]...”

14. “I’m Trying This So You Don’t Have To…”

Who doesn’t love a little risk and adventure on YouTube? When you try something bold (so others don't have to), that pretty much makes you a hero! It’s also entertaining to watch a creator set up a challenge, react to it, and share the results.

Once again, Sean Andrew got people’s attention with this creative hook. He tried to survive Chinese water torture and ended up getting 6 million views .

  • “Watch me do this…”
  • “Today I’m going to try this…”
  • “Today we’re gonna see if it’s possible to…”

15. “The Top 3 [Items/Ideas]...”

You guessed it: This hook is a variation of the almighty listicle video. Use it to recommend the best vacation spot, indoor vacuum, dog breed, or whatever’s close to your heart! People love this hook because they know they’re about to get real value .

And here’s a vidIQ example for you: “top three YouTube mistakes.”

16. “How to Become a…”

Typically, this hook is reserved for serious pursuits, like becoming a fisherman or a doctor. But if you want, you can be a complete goofball and turn this hook into comedic gold.

That’s what im_siowei did in the Short below. She opens it up with “how to become a mermaid in three steps,” and then 9 million people watched her take the most ridiculous journey to the sea.

17. “How to Have the Best [Activity/Idea] of Your Life…”

Most people want to do something better, faster, or easier in their daily lives. So opening your Short with “here’s how to have the best [insert common goal]” makes people pay attention to what you’re saying.

For example, Mr.Psychology reposted a video of onlyjayus telling people how to have the best sleep ever. The Short has over 500,000 views !

18. “A Simple Hack to…”

This hook is similar to the previous one, except it’s even better. While you can show someone how to do something thoroughly, providing a shortcut really gets their attention.

We used a variation of this hook recently, stating, “This could get your YouTube Shorts a lot more views.”

Just don’t give away the juicy part too soon!

Make Sure the Hook Lives Up to its Hype

While these hooks are attention-grabbing, remember that a video should always deliver on its promise. No matter what you say or do in the first three seconds, the remaining 30-50 seconds should build upon that foundation.

It looks like the 'Hawk Tuah' girl's 15 minutes of fame could be up after awkward video footage of the star at a music festival gave fans 'second hand embarrassment'.

It seems that the Hawk Tuah girl , briefly thought to be the people’s princess, has flown too close to the sun and is facing somewhat of an Icarian downfall.

In case you’ve been living under a rock and the words Hawk Tuah make no sense to you, the term comes from an exorbitantly viral video on TikTok where a woman, Haliey Welch, is asked by content creators, Tim & Dee TV: “What’s one move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time?”

Welch swiftly proceeded to make internet history at that moment by mimicking the action of mustering up some spit and replying: “You gotta give ‘em that ‘hawk tuah’ and spit on that thang, you get me?”

And so Welch quickly became the Hawk Tuah girl, much like how Clark Kent became Superman , and has been riding the high of viral fame for the past month.

From being paid staggering amounts of dollarinos and making surprise appearances to being offered her own reality TV show, Hawk Tuah girl has quite literally been everywhere and anywhere these past few weeks.

But, in a not-so surprising turn of events, it seems that even Hawk Tuah girl can’t escape the internet’s fleeting shelf life for viral fame — a bunch of fancy words to say the kids are officially bored of her.

During the Rock the South country music festival in Cullman, Alabama over the past weekend, Hawk Tuah girl made a surprise appearance on stage to welcome and hype up acts Warren Zeiders and Jelly Roll.

But when she asked the audience to make some noise for the band, well, no noise was actually made. None. Zero. Zilch.

In fact, her sole “woo” was the only thing that could be heard for miles.

The incredibly awkward clip is a recipe for its own meme material and the internet has naturally been having an absolute heyday celebrating what could be the beginning of the end for Hawk Tuah girl.

“I just got second hand embarrassment so bad,” one Instagram user wrote underneath the video.

“She was funny for a minute but this is just stupid now,” another wrote.

“And just like that…she hawked her last tuah,” said another.

Now whether or not Hawk Tuah girl has in fact hawked her last tuah is still to be determined. But for now it seems that both the chronically on and offline might be getting over it together.

Goodbye goodbye Hawk Tuah girl, you were bigger than the whole sky.

A company tried to fool the internet with fake viral videos for 2 years

You may have heard of Zardulu, the possible creator of the subway pizza rat, but now there is a new fake viral video machine in town. 

An Australian company has come clean, telling the world it has been creating fake videos for two years with the intention of them going viral and fooling news sites and TV news channels around the world. 

The Woolshed Company, a film production firm based in Melbourne, produced eight videos, including viral hits involving a bear chasing a snowboarder, a shark spotted in Sydney Harbour and a lion taking revenge on a trophy hunter. 

Some of the videos were clearly fake, and were often debated on the news rather than covered. But in a statement on its website, the company said the debate around authenticity helped to spread the videos further. 

In what it labelled a "social experiment," The Woolshed Company claimed it received more than 205 million views across 180 countries and 1.6 million "Likes" on Facebook. In other words, it screwed with a lot of people and created work for a lot of photo manipulation experts. 

"We set out to better understand exactly how to create short-form, highly sharable, ‘snackable’ content, that is capable of reaching worldwide mass audiences without the luxury of pricey media buys, ad campaigns, publicity strategies or distribution deals," the company explained on its website .
