We don’t realize how self-absorbed we’ve become, or how much we depend on the internet for everything. So, while there are a lot of pros to the ever-changing internet, there is bad alongside it, too. 

The Internet Can Affect Our Health

The development of the internet would be far less detrimental to our health if we didn’t have smartphones, handheld tablets and computers that weigh less than a bottle of water. These devices steal our attention. Checking your texts turns into watching one funny video, which turns into a three-hour rabbit hole of what baby carrots  are   and why they’re even a thing. Suddenly it’s 2 a.m., and your eyes are totally strained from the blue light you’ve been staring at in your dark little room all night. This is called the digital eye. Symptoms of digital eye include dry eyes and blurred vision and can lead to pains in other areas of the body, like your head, neck and shoulders.

Too much use of your mobile gadgets can ultimately lead to  incorrect posture  (that’s right, sit up straight, we know you’re slouching). It’s no secret that most of our technology promotes a down-forward user position. Unfortunately, this puts unnecessary amounts of pressure on the neck and spine. 

Using technology before bedtime could even cause a sleep disorder. This is due to the blue light emitted by mobile devices that stimulate the brain. This blue light is enough to disturb the body’s natural circadian rhythm. This disturbance can make the user struggle when trying to fall asleep and ultimately lead to being less alert the following day.

Too much internet can also lead to too little physical activity. The more we lead a sedentary life, the easier it is to acquire health problems like obesity. 

The Internet Can Cause Social Media Addiction that Leads to Emotional Harm

     It wasn’t long after the internet’s creation that social media came into play. Instead of caring about genuine interactions, we’ve come to obsess over likes and retweets and hearts and shares and comments and it creates a skewed self-image. Social media has set a standard for what is beautiful, for what is acceptable. It has introduced us to the concept of the how-to’s when it comes to our body and our appearance. In result, the algorithms of these social media applications lead us to the different tips in getting a perfect body without even working out or doing cardio exercises, a perfect skin care routine, a perfect summer body, a perfect brow shape, a perfect hair color for each season, a perfect diet or food supplement, and so much more! All these lead us to strive to perfect at least one or two of these “tips” and often get frustrated when we fail to achieve them. 

The Internet Can Be a Source of Illegal and Inappropriate Materials Unsuitable for Young People 

Not everything on the internet is made for everyone. But because everyone has access to the intent, it’s becoming increasingly easier for children to get their hands (and eyes) on inappropriate content. This content that’s not suitable for children has the power to introduce concepts to their minds that they’re not ready to manage or comprehend yet, thus causing them to grow up too quickly. Children and young people may not have found these things deliberately, but you can’t unsee things not meant for you.

The Internet May Become an Avenue for Cyber Crimes

Cyber crime is criminal activity that either targets users or a network device by hackers eager to make money. Cyber crimes,  which can be preventable , can be in the form of an email masked as identity fraud, theft or financial/card payment data. There’s also phishing. Not, like with the aquatic animal. Rather, it’s when spam emails or other forms of communication are sent with the intention of tricking recipients into doing something that risks their security. This may contain infected attachments or links to malicious sites, or ask the receiver to respond with confidential information.

Cyber crimes have created a major threat among us with thousands and thousands of user information stolen. Without the proper protection or awareness, hackers can steal confidential information straight from your computer. 

The Internet Can Affect Children’s Development

It’s undeniable that the internet plays an important role in our day-to-day lives. What we need to focus on is how much screen time children get, because excessive use of the internet can negatively affect children’s development. Their attention span, memory skills, language acquisition and critical reasoning can all be hindered with too much tech.

One disadvantage of the internet is that it feeds addictions such as gambling. Websites exist where people can play poker and bet real money. Often, the people using these websites are addicted to gambling and cannot afford to lose money.

Another addiction fueled by the internet is shopping. It is so easy to shop at millions of stores online with just a click of the mouse. In minutes, people spend entire paychecks shopping online. EBay, Amazon, and Overstock.com are just a few examples shopping websites.

Surveys show that many people admit to spending hours online each day. Some people stay up most of the night on the internet. This is a disadvantage when people need to work the next day. These individuals either miss work or perform poorly at work due to the lack of sleep.

Another disadvantage is that with the amount of personal information online, it is becoming easier for the wrong people to locate your information online. Stalkers, ex-spouses, ex-girlfriends, or ex-boyfriends can easily find your address and telephone number online free or by using a paid background check website. This endangers personal safety when the person locating your information has a history of violence against you.

The internet updates news sources constantly. This is an advantage for those who enjoy keeping up with the latest news. The internet is the fastest way to keep up on the news. The internet often has news before television, radio, and the newspapers. Examples of reputable websites include ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN.

Another advantage of the internet is the wide availability of research. Individuals research on the internet for a variety of reasons. Some may need research for a school project, personal knowledge, or for their job. Research is available on many topics including diseases, history, law, and education. It is best to use reputable websites such as scholarly journals, government databases, and professional journals. These websites contain information from experts in the field you are researching.

Websites that accept contributions by users such as About.com and Wikipedia are not reliable as anyone can contribute to these websites and the contributors may not be legitimate experts. The information provided on these sites may not be accurate and then you risk a poor grade on an assignment for not having correct information. If you use nonprofessional websites after graduation in a major project at work, your career may suffer, as you will appear unable to conduct research.

Technology such as webcams, social networking sites, and instant messaging allow friends and families who live across the country or across the world from each other keep in contact in real time if both parties are logged in at the same time. When families are separated, this is a convenient way to keep in touch.

Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the internet will assist me in making wise use of the internet in the future. I will try to set my security settings on social websites to private, keep track of how much time I spend on the internet, and monitor myself so that I do not become addicted to the internet or develop unhealthy spending habits on the internet. I will make sure I use reputable research sites such as those available through my college library, to educate myself on current events, and to keep in touch with my family members living far away. Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of a topic will help me make good decisions in the future. The internet has received much negative news coverage in recent years. Articles focus on major privacy scandals and security breaches, the proliferation of fake news, rampant harmful behaviours like cyber-bullying, cyber-theft, revenge porn, the exchange of child porn and internet predation, internet addiction, and the negative effects of the internet on social relations and social cohesion. Nevertheless, some 87 % of European households have internet access at home, and 65 % use mobile devices to access the internet. Europeans aged 16 to 24 years spend 168 minutes per day on mobile internet, dropping to 30 minutes for 55 to 64-year olds. Around 88 % of 15 to 24-year olds use social media, 80 % on a daily basis.

While the social and economic benefits of the internet cannot be denied, some of these developments can severely affect such European values as equality, respect for human rights and democracy. Technology companies are under increasing pressure to mitigate these harmful effects, and politicians and opinion leaders are advocating drastic measures.

The recently published STOA study on ‘Harmful internet use’ covers the damage associated with internet use on individuals’ health, wellbeing and functioning, and the impact on social structures and institutions. While the study does not attempt to cover all possible societal harm relating to the internet, Part I focuses on one specific cause of harm, internet addiction, and Part II covers a range of harmful effects on individuals and society that are associated with internet use. The report concludes with policy options for their prevention and mitigation.

Other studies have already extensively discussed some harmful effects, and these are already subject to a history of policy actions. These include harm to privacy, harm related to cybersecurity and cybercrime, and damage resulting from digital divides. In contrast, this study covers the less-studied but equally important harmful effects that concern individuals’ health, wellbeing and functioning, the quality of social structures and institutions, and equality and social inclusion.

Internet addiction and problematic internet use                             

Internet addiction and problematic internet use prevalence rates vary across studies and countries. The noteworthy discrepancy in prevalence estimates has a number of causes, including the different populations studied, as well as the various diagnostic tools and assessment criteria utilised. With this in mind, it appears that roughly 4 % of European adolescents demonstrate a pathological use of the internet that affects their life and health, while 13 % of adolescents engage in maladaptive behaviour when using the internet. Similar numbers are reported for adults.

Part I of the study focuses on generalised internet addiction, online gaming addiction, and online gambling addiction. Clinical presentations, patient profiling, comorbidities, instruments, interventions, and prognoses are different across these three potential addiction disorders. The study states that the individual, cultural and media-use context significantly contributes to the experience and severity of internet addiction.

The study proposes a set of preventive actions, and evidence to support future policies . It states that offering information, screening tools and campaigns to students in secondary schools and at universities regarding internet-use-related addiction problems can help, especially regarding gaming addiction in adolescent populations. This will require allocating research and resources for schools and their staff, and for families, as well as the establishment of working relationships with health professionals and services.

Harmful social and cultural effects associated with internet use

Part II of the study identifies a number of different harmful social and cultural effects associated with internet use. The evidence points to the occurrence of significant damage to both individuals and society. Some of these harmful effects are described briefly below:

Information overload: Having too much information to be able to adequately understand an issue or make effective decisions. Information overload is associated with loss of control, feelings of being overwhelmed, reduced intellectual performance, and diminished job satisfaction. Studies show that information overload affects up to 20-30% of people.

Damage to social relationships: Extensive internet use, of social media in particular, is correlated with loneliness and social isolation. Intimate relationships can be degraded by internet use, particularly due to viewing online pornography. Malicious online behaviour, particularly cyber-bullying, cyber-stalking and online predation, affects a significant percentage of internet users.

Impaired public/private boundaries: The way in which the internet and smartphones blur the distinction between private and public, and between different spheres of life, including work, home life and leisure, harms the boundaries between people’s public and private lives. Harmful effects that can result from such permeations include loss of quality of life, lack of privacy, decreased safety and security, and harm to social relations – when friends and family members feel they are left behind by new technology.

Harmful effects on cognitive development: Empirical evidence suggests that internet use can have both positive and negative impacts on cognitive development, depending on the person and the circumstances. There is evidence that children’s cognitive development can be damaged by prolonged internet use, including the development of memory skills, attention span, abilities for critical reasoning, language acquisition, reading, and learning abilities. More research is however needed to draw more reliable conclusions.

Damage to communities: Many off-line communities suffer through the partial migration of human activities – shopping, commerce, socialising, leisure activities, professional interactions – to the internet. Online communities sometimes extend off-line communities and sometimes replace them. They are often inadequate replacements, however, as they do not possess some of the valuable or the strongest qualities of off-line communities, and communities may consequently suffer from impoverished communication, incivility, and a lack of trust and commitment.

The study identifies a number of broad policy options for preventing and mitigating these harmful effects. They include, among other things:

• promoting technology that better protects social institutions, stimulating or requiring tech companies to introduce products and services that better protect social institutions and internet users;
• education about the internet and its consequences;
• stronger social services support for internet users: this policy option involves strengthening social services dedicated to internet users to prevent or mitigate harmful effects such as internet addition, antisocial online behaviour or information overload;
• incentivising or requiring employers to develop policies that protect workers against harmful effects of work-related internet use, such as information overload and the blurring of lines between public and private life;
• establishing governmental units and multi-stakeholder platforms at EU level,to address the problems of the internet’s harmful social and cultural effects.

Problematic use of the internet (PUI) research network

Finally, in relation to internet-caused damage, it is worth mentioning the recent article published by the European Science-Media Hub (ESMH) on the European Problematic Use of Internet (PUI) research network. The project, funded by the European Commission, gathers over 120 psychologists, psychiatrists and neuroscientists, with the objective of reaching a better definition of diagnostic criteria, the role of genetics and personality traits, and the brain-based mechanisms behind internet related disorders.

The Internet has been one of the biggest inventions that have made a great difference in the lives of many people in the world. Its introduction has come with an assortment of benefits which in one way or another has made life to be so easy. Many people say that the Internet has reduced the world into easily accessible global village since it helps people to access information from every part of the world with just some simple clicks on the keyboards and keypads of computers and related gadgets.

Internet use allows people who are interested and have the knowledge about it access a lot of information which range from different subjects hence it is able to meet the needs of diversified population that use the Internet. In this light, the invention of the Internet has been accompanied by many benefits that has turned the world into a global village, thus people can easily access any information at the click of a button.

To begin with, the Internet has come up with ways that enable man to undertake many tasks that were in the past deemed as cumbersome since it has almost every material that is needed to tackle all sorts of problems in various fields of life. For instance, scholars and research organizations had difficult time perusing through piles of books to do their research work. These have been made so easy with the introduction of the Internet since it has all the relevant materials that are needed to carry any kind of research work.

Likewise, in the past years, people suffered greatly due to congestion that occurred in processing transactions in the banking halls. Queuing was the only way through which people received banking services. With the invention of the Internet banking was made so easy due to the fact most of the operations of the financial institutions have been made accessible through the Internet, therefore making it possible for people to conduct all their bank transactions without any difficulty.

Through the Internet people can be able to transfer money electronically, check their bank account balances and withdraw and deposit money via the Internet; this is also referred to as Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This has also been accessible unlimitedly since the Internet is operational all the time.

Another important aspect is that the Internet has made it easy for people to do business via telecommunication media, thus having an opportunity to explore the international market.

This was a hard nut to crack before the introduction of the Internet because someone wishing to purchase goods in international markets had to use traditional means of communication such as television, phones, and newspaper. But with the coming of the Internet this has become very simple. People nowadays can easily buy goods online and at the same companies can display their commodities on the Internet. All transactions are made online hence making international trade very convenient.

Consequently, online trading has also led to great revolution in the innovativeness due to the fact that companies are able to share ideas with others which trigger them to become dynamic in the way they perform their business operations so as to be able to meet the demands of the international market. Advertisement of goods is also very easy since companies need to launch their websites where they post their commodities and prices.

This was very difficult in the past since advertisement was only limited to television, radio and print media which are relatively expensive and do not advertise the products of each company that has subscribed with them throughout. But the Internet is at all times advertising all the commodities that have been posted on it.

More importantly, the Internet has acted as a channel through which people access employment opportunities since most employers advertise jobs through agents that are online. At the same the invention of the Internet has created many job opportunities that are associated with its existence. For instance, jobs such as creation of web pages and programs have come up due to the Internet.

Internet has also led to the establishment of businesses that deal with Internet such as cyber cafés, online research agencies, search engines such as Google and social networks that are private businesses. In addition to these, individuals have also started Internet service providing firms where people subscribe at a fee to get connected to the Internet. All these cases give a clear implication of the Internet as far as availability of employment is concerned.

In the education field, the Internet has made scholarly work to be so easy since it provides all the materials that student require in doing their research and answering assignments given to them. Learners can also use the Internet to undertake their normal studies since it contains all the academic resources that are needed.

Research work has also been streamlined by the invention of the Internet since researchers from different institutes around the world can share ideas and facts. The Internet has also made learning so easy due to the fact that tutors in learning institutes can send and receive learning materials to or from their students. People can also undertake online courses which they can pursue at the comfort of their homes or offices.

Furthermore, people get entertained in various ways by the ever increasing number of entertainment sites. There are sites that are purposely created to offer recreation to Internet users such as youtube.com which is used by entertainers or even ordinary people to post music, movies or funny comedies and events which are then accessed by people, hence entertaining them.

There are also social networks that are developed in the Internet which are used by people to interact by communicating, sharing photos and finding friends all over the world. Such sites include Facebook and Twitter.

Therefore, from the above benefits, it can be articulated that the invention of the Internet has really changed the lives of many people. Internet has also altered the mode in which various activities are done. It has also led to the development of so many other things related to the technology and at the same time things that seem to be inaccessible to easily reached. In essence, this invention has really affected people’s lives positively.

Is the Internet Good or Bad for Education?

It might seem like a very obvious question – the plethora of resources, information and communication available on the internet has opened up a whole new world of rich possibility for students across the planet. Many people would assert without a second thought that the internet has been a wonderful boost for education. Yet alongside the positives comes a dark underbelly of cheating, plagiarism, bullying and fraud, which many believe to be so deeply damaging that it risks destroying the world of education as we know it.

Communication

The ability to communicate with other students and teachers across the world has enabled 21st century education to transcend geographical distance and physical boundaries like never before. Suddenly new ideas and theories can be shared across continents, whole new worlds of thought are available to students in far-flung places and teachers across the world are able to use forums to share valuable ideas and techniques.

From online dictionaries and encyclopaedias to Wikipedia, an abundance of information on every conceivable subject under the sun is now available to students at the touch of a button. The potential for exploiting these resources to learn is enormous and students are now able to study, discover and learn no matter where they are. When you consider how easy it would have been to create a school project on dinosaurs in the 1980s compared to the treasure trove of facts, figures, pictures and more available to today’s student, the amount and depth of information they can access has been vastly improved by the internet.

Education Technology

‘Edtech’ and ‘e-learning’ are popular terms on Twitter and social networking sites, referring to new ways of teaching and learning that use computers, digital devices like iPads and mobile phones and clever programs to teach students in new ways. New and exciting resources like electronic educational games and programs like an online chemistry lab allowing virtual experiments to be realistically carried out are changing the face of education for the better.

Accessibility

The internet allows access to education for anybody who has a computer, meaning that students in isolated and distant geographical locations are able to connect to educators for the first time. Not only does it mean that anybody who wants to can benefit from online lecture series from top universities like Harvard and Cambridge, but it also enables students who would not be able physically to attend university to take courses and achieve qualifications through distance learning programs.

The birth of the internet sadly spawned a new evil in the world of education – the exponentially increased opportunity for students to access the work of academics, writers and other students and to copy and paste it at the click of a button before passing it off as their own work. Whilst measures are slowly coming into force to try to prevent electronic plagiarism, the nature of the internet is such that it will never be possible completely to control the poaching of academic material with the tragic result that many students are able to avoid the experience of learning for themselves. Startling recent statistics have shown that not only do 1 in 3 American students admit having used the internet to plagiarise work for an assignment, but, perhaps even more worryingly, only 29% viewed copying from the web as “serious cheating”. This suggests that the birth of the internet has not only enabled a new form of cheating, but also created a shift in moral perceptions of what is considered right and wrong in education.

False Information

Many students now growing up with the internet are so used to being able to access answers at the click of a mouse that they forget not all information on the internet is reliable or completely accurate. It is amazing how many students believe that Wikipedia is the ideal go-to resource for any academic question, when in fact the famous online encyclopaedia is quite openly compiled by any anonymous member of the public who chooses to post there and is in no way guaranteed to include only accurate information submitted by academic experts of any kind! The potential for students to become waylaid by false information and misleading statistics is enormous!

The Demise of Books

The internet has heralded an enormous surge towards digitalisation, in books and education as in every other sphere of life. Suddenly sales of books are plummeting, children’s reading levels are decreasing rapidly and that proud bastion of academic greatness, the library, is under serious threat. The irony that this great new resource might eventually herald the end of books and libraries and consequently deal an enormous blow to literacy, has not escaped the notice of critics; with many children’s authors campaigning vociferously for books and libraries to be rescued from the brink of extinction.

Distraction

Whilst the internet presents an enormously rich educational resource to those students who choose to use it for that purpose, it is also the gateway to a world of distractions and not particularly enriching pastimes for young people! Statistics have revealed that with high numbers of teens having access to computers and the internet in their bedrooms, time spent on homework or reading books has plummeted as hours spent on Facebook and social networking sites have taken over. Many critics warn that any benefit the internet may hold for education will be easily outweighed by its ability to distract and take students away from educational pastimes and endeavour.

And The Ugly

Tragically the transference of so much education to the internet has made this sphere of life vulnerable to the dangers that the internet poses to any user, but particularly to young people. The threat of stalkers, paedophiles and criminals using the internet to contact and exploit young people is of course accentuated by sites, some of them educational, which specifically target young people and act as a forum for them to congregate electronically.

In addition, the rise of e-learning and education technology has opened up the new avenue of cyber bullying, allowing vulnerable students to be targeted online as well as in the playground.

The Answer?

Overall it is of course impossible to underestimate the wonderful potential of the internet to enhance and enrich education the world over. But as the internet nears its 20th anniversary it is quite startling to realise that so little has been done to truly tackle the problems and threats it poses to education, from plagiarism and cheating to cyber bullying. If, as the current trend seems to suggest, education is to continue moving towards more and more electronic dissemination, we must ensure that these problems are properly and thoroughly addressed as soon as possible.

The COVID-19 vaccine is very good at preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death. Because the virus that causes COVID-19 continues to change, vaccines are updated to help fight the disease. What is the COVID-19 vaccine?

The COVID-19 vaccine lessens the severity of COVID-19 by teaching the immune system to recognize and fight the virus that causes the disease.

For fall/winter 2023–2024, the updated COVID-19 vaccine is based on the XBB.1.5 variant. The updated vaccine is made by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax. This season, only one shot of the vaccine is needed for most people, and there are no boosters. (People who are immunocompromised or ages 6 months to 4 years may need more than one 2023–2024 vaccine.)

How is the 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccine different from previous COVID-19 vaccines?

The 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccine targets XBB.1.5, a subvariant of Omicron. While none of the variants currently circulating are exact matches to the vaccine, they are all closely related to the XBB.1.5 strain. Studies show that the updated vaccine is effective against the  variants currently causing the majority of COVID-19 cases  in the U.S.

Who should get a COVID-19 vaccine?

Because the 2023–2024 vaccine is effective for recent strains of COVID-19, it is recommended that everyone stay up to date with this vaccine. Previous vaccines or boosters were not developed to target the more recent strains. For 2023–2024, the CDC recommends:

• Everyone age 5 and older receive one shot of the updated vaccine.
• Children ages 6 months to 4 years may need more than one shot to be up to date.
• People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised may need more than one shot.

COVID-19 vaccines approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are safe and recommended for people who are pregnant or lactating, as well as for those r intending to become pregnant.

People who are pregnant or were recently pregnant are at a greater risk for severe COVID-19. Having a severe case of COVID-19 while pregnant is linked to a higher risk of pre-term birth and stillbirth and might increase the risk of other pregnancy complications.

What should parents know about the COVID-19 vaccine and children?

The CDC recommends the 2023–2024 vaccine for adolescents and teenagers ages 12 and older, and for children ages 6 months through 11 years.

Is natural immunity better than a vaccine?

Natural immunity is the antibody protection your body creates against a germ once you’ve been infected with it. Natural immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19 is no better than vaccine-acquired immunity, and it comes with far greater risks. Studies show that natural immunity to the virus weakens over time and does so faster than immunity provided by COVID-19 vaccination.

Do I need a COVID-19 booster?
