Zara Aleena 's murderer has appeared in court alongside a prison workshop instructor who is charged with misconduct in a public office over an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with him in jail.
Hayley Jones, 33, acted in a way "which amounted to an abuse of the public's trust" during a relationship with Jordan McSweeney , 31, who is serving at least 33 years in HMP Belmarsh for the murder of Ms Aleena, it is alleged.
McSweeney, who killed the 35-year-old law graduate as she walked home from a night out in Ilford, east London, in the early hours of June 26 2022, nine days after he was released from prison, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court via video-link on Wednesday.
Jones, of Strood in Kent, who appeared in person, is accused of misconduct in a public office between March 6 2023 and April 7 2023 - an offence which could lead to life imprisonment.
McSweeney has been charged with encouraging or assisting the commission of an indictable offence.
During a short hearing on Wednesday, the case was adjourned until September 25 at Woolwich Crown Court.
Jones was granted conditional bail and must not contact McSweeney or visit the prison where he is being held.
McSweeney was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 38 years at the Old Bailey in December 2022 after admitting sexually assaulting and murdering Ms Aleena.
In November 2023, he won a Court of Appeal bid to reduce the minimum term of his life sentence to 33 years.

Studying public and international law at ANU was essential for me to pursue a successful career path.

JD candidate at UC Berkeley School of Law , Alice Choi, exemplifies resilience and commitment to public service amidst her educational journey. Originally on track to graduate in 2025, Alice took a year-long maternity leave, adjusting her graduation timeline to 2026. Her path to Berkeley Law was influenced by a deep-rooted desire to continue serving the community she has grown to call home.
“I moved to the Bay Area fifteen years ago to work with Teach For America and built a life here,” Alice explains. “Berkeley Law stood out to me because of its strong commitment to public service, which resonates with my career goals.”
With a background in education and a passion for youth law, Alice aims to channel her experiences into a career that addresses systemic issues affecting marginalized communities. “I’m considering avenues like juvenile defense, education law, or child welfare,” she shares thoughtfully.
Alice credits Berkeley Law’s supportive environment and dedicated career development resources for helping her navigate her goals. She notes the importance of the career development office and how it has guided her towards opportunities that work towards her aspirations.
We need to rethink how we approach criminal justice and prioritize community well-being. Alice Choi JD, 2026
Recently, Alice embarked on an internship with the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of California in San Francisco, driven by her belief in equitable legal representation for all individuals. “Too often, indigent individuals are unfairly treated within our legal system,” Alice reflects. “Federal public defenders play a crucial role in safeguarding their rights.”
Reflecting on her early experiences at the Federal Public Defender’s office this summer, Alice shares a moment: “My first task involved helping draft a motion for compassionate release for a client who has served an excessively long prison sentence. He’s not only rehabilitated but also the sole available caregiver for his elderly, ailing mother. We don’t know yet whether the judge will grant the motion, but I’m very much hoping to see our client finally go home.”
When asked about the impact of this internship on her career aspirations, Alice is resolute. “This experience reaffirms my commitment to addressing systemic injustices. It parallels my work in education, where I witnessed firsthand how systemic failures contribute to crime.”
“We need to rethink how we approach criminal justice and prioritize community well-being,” she asserts passionately. As Alice Choi continues her journey at Berkeley Law, her dedication to public service and advocacy serves as an inspiration to her peers and a beacon of hope for those seeking justice in our society.
The Australian National University provides PhD students with a vibrant research community and outstanding program support . When selecting a research program, an institution's reputation is everything. ANU is one of the world's leading universities, and the smart choice for your research program.
As a PhD student you will work with increased independence, under the direction of a supervisory panel of experts in the field. Your research will make an original and important contribution to human knowledge, research and development.
The major component of a research program is a substantial written work known as a thesis, which investigates a particular subject or issue. As a research student, you will work with increased independence, under the direction of an academic supervisor or a supervisory panel of academic staff.
A PhD will normally take you between 2-4 years to complete.
Meeting great people at ANU has also been a highlight. My supervisor and panel were absolute rock stars and gave me the confidence to chase my hunches. It's been great working with a super smart and dedicated cohort of PhD students investigating emerging challenges in science communication.
My Master's at ANU included a rewarding placement at the Royal Institution of Australia, where I honed my science communication skills by assisting with COSMOS Magazine. Now, as a PhD researcher, I'm immersed in the ins and outs of my field. Working as a research assistant at the Responsible Innovation Lab has been a positive challenge that has extended my interests.
The Doctor of Philosophy is your gateway to an academic or research career in science. In addition to academia, PhD graduates work in diverse fields within government, education, industry and media.
Students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and support, including labs, computational services and recreation and relaxation rooms.
Industry engagement is one of the best ways for a PhD student to test their capabilities as a researcher, and to obtain transferable and professional skills.
We have a wide range of potential science and mathematical research projects, ranging from short-term projects to three-year PhD projects.
Not many people will read your PhD thesis, but if you completed your doctoral research at the Australian National University College of Science, then Tabitha Carvan has probably read one small part of it.
What she found is a kind of poetry in the science.
Raghda Abdel Khaleq spends a lot of time contemplating the unknown sector of our universe. And not just for her PhD research in nuclear physics.
When athletic clothing retailer Lululemon recently unveiled its first jacket made from recycled polyester, The Australian National University (ANU) Industry PhD student Rosie Georgelin felt a sense of pride and excitement.

Email your academic supervisor directly to enquire about projects and supervision. Your email should outline the reason(s) why you are attracted to their field of research, the type of research you would like to pursue and a summary of your academic qualifications and research experience. You may also submit a short research proposal, however, this is not mandatory at this point.
The academic supervisor may contact you to discuss your research proposal and possibly other projects, or they may forward your email to other staff in the research school / centre.
Once an academic supervisor has been confirmed to support your application you may proceed to step three.
If you are not sure which area of research or supervisor matches your interest please complete an expression of interest and we will get in contact with you. Do not proceed to next step until advised.
