PhD & MPhil Study Options

phd in law anu

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students normally spend a minimum of three years at ANU, while part-time students spend up to six years. Candidates are normally required to submit a thesis of no more than 100,000 words and must meet the internationally recognised standard for the degree in the relevant discipline.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) are designed for students who require an advanced research qualification, but who want a shorter degree program than the PhD. The MPhil program is offered on a full-time and part-time basis. It usually takes students between one and two years full-time, or between two and four years part-time, to complete.  Candidates are normally required to submit a thesis of no more than 60,000 words and must meet the internationally recognised standard for the degree in the relevant discipline.

CASS requires research students to complete coursework as part of their degree. This will include training on research methods, ethics and other topics as deemed appropriate by your supervisory panel.

Finding a supervisor

Identifying a potential primary supervisor is an important part of your graduate research application. Browse the ANU Researchers database to find and contact a potential supervisor to support your application. In most cases the School or Centre location of your potential supervisor will determine which School or Centre within CASS you will reside in. Please note, that once you have found a potential supervisor, any offer of supervision will be subject to you being formally offered admission to the program and meeting any conditions (if applicable).

Who is Usha Vance? Yale law graduate and wife of vice presidential nominee JD Vance

phd in law anu

By Olivia Diaz, The Associated Press

Posted Jul 16, 2024 05:31:21 PM.

Last Updated Jul 17, 2024 04:55:19 PM.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Usha Chilukuri Vance, Yale law graduate and trial lawyer, was thrust into the spotlight this week after her husband, JD Vance, was chosen as Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election.

Chilukuri Vance, 38, was raised in San Diego, by Indian immigrants. Her mother is a biologist and provost at the University of California at San Diego; her father is an engineer, according to JD Vance’s campaign. She received an undergraduate degree at Yale University and a master of philosophy at the University of Cambridge through the Gates Cambridge scholarship.

After Cambridge, she met her husband back at Yale, where the two studied law. In his 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” JD Vance said the two got to know each other through a class assignment, where he soon “fell hard” for his writing partner.

“In a place that always seemed a little foreign, Usha’s presence made me feel at home,” he wrote.

They graduated in 2013 and wed the following year.

After law school, Chilukuri Vance spent a year clerking for Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he served as an appeals court judge in Washington, followed by a year as a law clerk to Chief Justice John Roberts.

She has since become a trial lawyer for the Munger, Tolles and Olson law firm at its San Francisco and D.C. offices. Chilukuri Vance left the law firm where she worked shortly after her husband was chosen as Trump’s running mate.

“Usha has informed us she has decided to leave the firm,” Munger, Tolles & Olson said in a statement. “Usha has been an excellent lawyer and colleague, and we thank her for her years of work and wish her the best in her future career.”

Chilukuri Vance was not available Tuesday for comment, according to a spokeswoman for JD Vance’s campaign.

In his memoir, Vance credited part of his success and happiness to his wife.

“Even at my best, I’m a delayed explosion—I can be defused, but only with skill and precision,” Vance wrote. “It’s not just that I’ve learned to control myself but that Usha has learned how to manage me.”

Voter records show that as of 2022, Chilukuri Vance was a registered Republican in Ohio, and voted in the Republican primary that year — the same election that her husband was running in the Republican senate primary.

JD and Usha Vance live in Cincinnati, and have three children: Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel. Outside of work, she served on the Cincinnati Symphony Board of Directors from September 2020 to July 2023.

Zara Aleena 's murderer has appeared in court alongside a prison workshop instructor who is charged with misconduct in a public office over an alleged "inappropriate relationship" with him in jail.

Hayley Jones, 33, acted in a way "which amounted to an abuse of the public's trust" during a relationship with Jordan McSweeney , 31, who is serving at least 33 years in HMP Belmarsh for the murder of Ms Aleena, it is alleged.

McSweeney, who killed the 35-year-old law graduate as she walked home from a night out in Ilford, east London, in the early hours of June 26 2022, nine days after he was released from prison, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court via video-link on Wednesday.

Jones, of Strood in Kent, who appeared in person, is accused of misconduct in a public office between March 6 2023 and April 7 2023 - an offence which could lead to life imprisonment.

McSweeney has been charged with encouraging or assisting the commission of an indictable offence.

During a short hearing on Wednesday, the case was adjourned until September 25 at Woolwich Crown Court.

Jones was granted conditional bail and must not contact McSweeney or visit the prison where he is being held.

McSweeney was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 38 years at the Old Bailey in December 2022 after admitting sexually assaulting and murdering Ms Aleena.

In November 2023, he won a Court of Appeal bid to reduce the minimum term of his life sentence to 33 years.

I chose to study the Master of Laws at ANU because I was looking for a career change. I am particularly interested in regulatory and policy solutions to climate change. Public and private sectors working closely to embrace emerging technologies are part of the energy transition and policy and law are part of the implementation.

Studying public and international law at ANU was essential for me to pursue a successful career path.

From Classroom to Courtroom: Berkeley Law Student’s Fight for Justice

By Amber Abruzzo

A Journey Rooted in Service

JD candidate at UC Berkeley School of Law , Alice Choi, exemplifies resilience and commitment to public service amidst her educational journey. Originally on track to graduate in 2025, Alice took a year-long maternity leave, adjusting her graduation timeline to 2026. Her path to Berkeley Law was influenced by a deep-rooted desire to continue serving the community she has grown to call home.

“I moved to the Bay Area fifteen years ago to work with Teach For America and built a life here,” Alice explains. “Berkeley Law stood out to me because of its strong commitment to public service, which resonates with my career goals.”

Balancing Motherhood and Law School

With a background in education and a passion for youth law, Alice aims to channel her experiences into a career that addresses systemic issues affecting marginalized communities. “I’m considering avenues like juvenile defense, education law, or child welfare,” she shares thoughtfully.

Alice credits Berkeley Law’s supportive environment and dedicated career development resources for helping her navigate her goals. She notes the importance of the career development office and how it has guided her towards opportunities that work towards her aspirations.

We need to rethink how we approach criminal justice and prioritize community well-being. Alice Choi JD, 2026

phd in law anu

Hands-On Experience in Federal Public Defense

Recently, Alice embarked on an internship with the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of California in San Francisco, driven by her belief in equitable legal representation for all individuals. “Too often, indigent individuals are unfairly treated within our legal system,” Alice reflects. “Federal public defenders play a crucial role in safeguarding their rights.”

Reflecting on her early experiences at the Federal Public Defender’s office this summer, Alice shares a moment: “My first task involved helping draft a motion for compassionate release for a client who has served an excessively long prison sentence. He’s not only rehabilitated but also the sole available caregiver for his elderly, ailing mother. We don’t know yet whether the judge will grant the motion, but I’m very much hoping to see our client finally go home.”

Advocating for Systematic Change

When asked about the impact of this internship on her career aspirations, Alice is resolute. “This experience reaffirms my commitment to addressing systemic injustices. It parallels my work in education, where I witnessed firsthand how systemic failures contribute to crime.”

“We need to rethink how we approach criminal justice and prioritize community well-being,” she asserts passionately. As Alice Choi continues her journey at Berkeley Law, her dedication to public service and advocacy serves as an inspiration to her peers and a beacon of hope for those seeking justice in our society.

Finding an academic supervisor

Prospective research students first need to identify a research project and find an academic supervisor.

Review the  fields of research  we offer and contact the academic convenor for advice about potential projects, supervisors, and the pre-application process. The  ANU Researchers  website is also a good place to start looking for a supervisor.

Email your academic supervisor directly to enquire about projects and supervision. Your email should outline the reason(s) why you are attracted to their field of research, the type of research you would like to pursue and a summary of your academic qualifications and research experience. You may also submit a short research proposal, however, this is not mandatory at this point.

The academic supervisor may contact you to discuss your research proposal and possibly other projects, or they may forward your email to other staff in the research school / centre.

Once an academic supervisor has been confirmed to support your application you may proceed to step three.

If you are not sure which area of research or supervisor matches your interest please complete an  expression of interest  and we will get in contact with you. Do not proceed to next step until advised.

Finding available scholarships

ANU Colleges and individual research schools offer a number of  scholarships  that are awarded on a merit basis. You can also talk to your academic supervisor about other sources of funding you might access to assist with living expenses and tuition fees.

Visit the international postgraduate research applications page to prepare for your application to ANU.
