‘Doctor Odyssey’: New Trailer Hints at Jaw-Dropping Twist

Amid Sunday (September 15) night’s Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast, there were quite a few sneak peeks at ABC’s fall programming slate in the commercials run, including a brand-new teaser trailer for the network’s highly anticipated new medical drama, Doctor Odyssey . While that Joshua Jackson – and Don Johnson -led series has been a bit of a mystery so far ( as the cast described it to us, this is Ryan Murphy’s “fantasy about a cruise ship” ), the newest sneak peek might’ve finally given us a glimpse of the show’s big twist… if there is one.

In the trailer (embedded below), Johnson’s character says over Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” “Doctor, welcome aboard the Odyssey. This ship is heaven. Think of yourself as a guardian angel.”

In a previous teaser, the quote was extended to include, “Our mission is to preserve the dream. And that’s why you’re here… keep these dreamers safe.”

The references to heaven and dreaming in these trailers are simply too extensive to ignore at this point, so what could these teasers be hinting at? Here are a few early theories about what  Doctor Odyssey ‘s twist might really be.

1. It’s actual Heaven.

It would be a  little on the nose, but since the trailer music does conjure up memories of “San Junipero” using the same song as a pun about a digital afterlife, we have to at least  consider the possibility that this is all some kind of illusion or afterlife scenario… especially since the entire reason Max has joined the medical crew of this ship is he had a near-death experience with Covid.

2. The captain is a ghost. 

Given all of his references to paradise in the teasers for the new series and the fact that he only seems to directly communicate with Doctor Max in the look-aheads, some have speculated that this might be a Last Christmas sort of deal where Capt. Robert Massey is actually an apparition-slash-mentor for Max. Hey, stranger things have happened, especially on network procedurals.

3. this is all based on  the odyssey ..

The name of the ship simply cannot be ignored. The concept of a man on a journey of self-discovery across the ocean rings a little too familiar to readers of Homer’s epic, no? If so, we can look forward to all kinds of fun characters coming along, from sirens in the sea to one-eyed giants to gods and beyond.

4. This is some kind of oceanic virtual reality   adventure with real-life dangers.

The captain calling the passengers “dreamers” so often could be some kind of hint that this is no ordinary cruise ship, and it is instead a fictional adventure of some kind for its passengers. Think Westworld meets  Fantasy Island , and if the passengers get hurt in the game, they could get hurt in real life… hence, why they’d need Max to stick around.

5. It could just be a straightforward procedural.

TV trailers having a red herring or two isn’t anything new, so there’s definitely a possibility that this show, which will premiere between  9-1-1 Season 8 and  Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, is just another rote medical drama. So, we’ll have to wait and see whether these teasers are actually hinting at something twisty when the series premieres this fall, but for now, what we do know is that there are two episode synopses available for the show so far:

• Pilot : “Max Bankman is The Odyssey’s new onboard doctor, where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all-hands-on-deck as he gets acquainted with Capt. Massey and his medical team, Avery and Tristan, while treating crises miles from shore.”
• Episode 2, “Singles Week” : “It’s Singles Week on The Odyssey, and lust is in the air. As Max, Tristan and Avery navigate their relationship, the crew fends off advances from passengers. With rising desire and quickly spreading ailments, Max and the team rush to restore order.”

Viewers loved the recreations of classic TV sets from shows like “Cheers” and “Martin” in the last Emmys telecast, in January, which is perhaps why the ceremony’s producers went back to that well on Sunday night. It included a 50th anniversary tribute to the classic nostalgia sitcom “Happy Days,” featuring Ron Howard and Henry Winkler in a replica of the show’s diner, Arnold’s.

“Happy Days” debuted in January 1974 but was set decades earlier, in a warm and fuzzy version of 1950s Milwaukee. “‘Happy Days’ did not invent this kind of rosy retrospective memory,” James Poniewozik, the chief television critic for The New York Times, wrote in January . “But as a mass phenomenon, it was the show that split the atom of nostalgia and got us unstuck in time.”

For the 50th anniversary of “Happy Days,” The Times convened a virtual summit of the surviving original stars — Howard, Winkler, Donny Most, Anson Williams, and Marion Ross — to look back on the show.

“I thank God I was part of this ensemble,” Winkler said in that interview. “It is a gift from heaven that fell in my lap.”

It is nearly time to catch TV's go-to dance competition, and there is lots to be excited about. Dancing With the Stars is gearing toward Season 33 with a star-studded selection of contenders who will twist and turn to a variety of dance styles. From the samba to the foxtrot, these participants will have to do their best on the dance floor to get votes from viewers and high scores from the judges. Last season, Xotchil Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy impressed everyone and won the silver prize after facing off Jason Mraz and Daniela Karagach in the finale. Although both Chmerkovskiy and Karagach are back this time around, the competition might be even more intense as professional dancer Witney Carson returns after leaving the show in Season 31. DWTS fans know well that she was host Alfonso Ribeiro 's partner in the year he won the mirrorball, so it will be interesting to see her aid another celeb in the competition.

Once again, Julianne Hough and Ribeiro will host the ABC reality program, and Carrie Ann Inaba , Bruno Tonioli , and Derek Hough will return to their posts on the judging panel. In light of the confirmed tunes that will be in the Season 33 premiere, audiences can expect contestants like con artist Anna Delvey and Bachelor alum Joey Graziadei to pop those hips to songs by Sabrina Carpenter and Tyler Hubbard .

In an interview with Us Weekly, Ribeiro hinted that this year doesn't have a clear frontrunner, which will make the competition much more entertaining. With several of the celebrities never having attempted a ballroom dance before, the host's comment leads us to wonder which participants will learn the moves and show off their natural dance skills on opening night. Given that this season's first episode will drop in just a few hours, here is a breakdown of everything you need to know before tuning in.

For those who don't have access to cable, it is still possible to watch the show through streaming. New episodes will air on TV and on Disney + simultaneously , so subscribers can watch them in real-time through the streaming platform. After the premiere goes live on Tuesday, the episode will be available to watch on Hulu the following day. Season 33's official trailer dropped on September 12, and it gives viewers an inside glimpse at the contestants who will eye the opportunity to take home the mirrorball trophy. This year's contenders range from Bachelor Nation alums, Olympic athletes, Hollywood stars, and Superbowl champions. Although most of them have barely any knowledge of different ballroom dance styles, they will be mentored by Dancing With the Stars pros, who will be walking the participants through elaborate choreographies that will encompass a wide range of ballroom dance styles. As several of them noted in the clip above, they are ready to show off their star power on the dance floor and prove they have what it takes to win the shiny prize.

What's the 'Dancing With the Stars' Season 33 Episode Schedule?

The full episode schedule for DWTS has yet to come out, but for now, it is confirmed that the first episode will air on September 17, while the next one will come out the following Tuesday, September 24. Episode 2's theme is Oscar night, so we are surely going to witness a lot of glitz and glam, as well as odes to Academy Award-winning films, either through the choreographies or the actual performances.

Those that make the cut get a ticket to Hollywood and work with top choreographers in the nation to learn challenging dance routines every week. Although all the contestants are professionals, they are used to a particular style of dance, often having to step out of their comfort zones when certain choreographies aren't related to their area of expertise. To avoid getting eliminated, they must impress the judges and audience alike with their moves.

'Dance Moms' (2011-2019)

If you don't mind when dance and drama mix, then Dance Moms should be on your radar. Although the show is evidently problematic given that a group of seasoned performers is coached by a temperamental instructor called Abby Lee Miller , it is still interesting to see these young dancers going to competitions and taking audiences by surprise with their talent. As the title hints at, this reality show also focuses on the mothers of these dancers and how they interact with each other amid their children's rehearsals and recitals. The level of competitiveness is through the roof here, many times with students having to face each other off in the studio to earn a solo. Before starring in films like The Fallout and My Old Ass , Maddie Ziegler 's career took off during her time in Dance Moms as one of Abby's personal favorites in the classroom.

'Dance Monsters' (2022)

Netflix has put out a few different dance-related programs in the past few years, and Dance Monsters is one of them. This short-lived, but fairly entertaining reality show was hosted by Ashley Roberts with DWTS Season 32 alum Lele Pons , Ne-Yo , and Ashley Banjo taking on the role of judges. In Dance Monsters , professional dancers wear motion capture suits while they perform for the judges, transforming into CGI monsters while showcasing their moves. The twist here would be that certain dancer numbers won't look as polished depending on the monster the person is dressed as, so the performers do have to use their creativity to ensure that their routine translates to the fuzzy creature they are disguised as.

The final two episodes of The Parent Test are set to premiere as part of a two-hour block on ABC Thursday, February 16, starting at 8 pm ET/PT. Here are the synopses for the final two episodes, where the show renders its verdict on the most effective parenting style:

Episode 9, "It's All About Respect" "Disciplined, Traditional and Child Led parenting styles take center stage to discuss how respect is instilled in their families. Should parents demand respect or earn it? In the Dress for Success challenge, the kids decide how their parents will dress for a professional photo shoot. And in the A-Maze me challenge, families must face fear and frustration head-on when they are trapped in a seemingly endless maze."

Episode 10, "America's Most Effective Parenting Style" "The final two challenges of the season tackle some of the biggest obstacles families face today. In the Bullying challenge, we observe how kids react when they see someone else being victimized. And the Joyride challenge will take families to the Disneyland Resort, where we see how the final three parenting styles manage their time and make decisions and compromises to keep everyone happy at the Happiest Place on Earth."

ABC have indeed released a small trailer for The Parent Test , which gives audiences a tantalizing tease of what’s in store for the parents and the children alike. Unsurprisingly, it promises to be a highly emotional, heartfelt and educational experience. Take a look below to see the first trailer for The Parent Test .

To put it simply, 12 parents allowed The Parent Test 's cameras into their homes so that they could film how they looked after their children. Each of these families have a distinctively unique style of parenting. These approaches include helicopter, new-age, intensive, child-led, free-range, strict, negotiation and high achievement.

They were then given various situations to run through. These were chosen to put their parenting styles to the ultimate test and to provoke discussions on the positives and negatives of each approach. 

Then, the dozen parents reflect and converse about these tests back in the studio together, all of which is overseen by The Parent Test 's host and expert. But who is in charge of The Parent Test ?

The Parent Test is hosted by comedian Ali Wentworth, who previously starred in Head Case , Seinfeld , Jerry Maguire and It's Complicated . During a recent interview with Variety , Wentworth said she hopes The Parent Test starts a "national conversation about how we’re raising our kids."

Especially because, in the wake of the pandemic, a number of old ideas about how to be a parent were seemingly discarded, in favor of new techniques. 

"Things like screens and social media, where you may have had a rule about it before the pandemic. But then, you wanted your kids to feel connected, so you let them stay on screens much longer than you would have otherwise. I also think the younger generations are experiencing a real mental health crisis that we haven’t even figured out yet, that we haven't even collected the data on it yet."

Wentworth won't be dealing with the parents alone, though. She'll be joined by Dr. Adolph Brown, who is The Parent Test 's parenting expert, as well as a master teacher and clinical psychologist. 

During the same interview with Variety, Brown, who actually goes by the nickname Doc Brown, insisted that The Parent Test features heart and humor, as well as the dramatics that you expect. 

"There was a collective compassion that I saw on the set that every parent wanted to know what was the best style of parenting, even though they were pretty much advocating for their own," teased Brown. "They were open minded and open hearted, to listen to others."
