About Theses and Dissertations
A dissertation or thesis is a document submitted in support of candidature for a degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings. (International Standard ISO 7144: Documentation — Presentation of theses and similar documents ).
For most universities in the U.S., dissertation is the term for the required submission for the PhD, and thesis refers only to the master's degree requirement.
Other Universities
T he best source to find theses is ProQuest Dissertations & Thesis Global . Policies regarding theses and dissertation collections largely vary between universities. So check the library website of the university of interest.
Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon theses are now ONLINE and can be searched through the ProQuest database Dissertations & Theses @ Carnegie Mellon University that enables access to citations and abstracts of all dissertations and theses, as well as the fulltext in PDF format. Scroll down and select Dissertations & Theses, then do a regular search. Print versions are also available in the libraries collection.
The Carnegie Mellon Library catalog , uses the term THESIS to denote both masters' theses and dissertations. However, the number of master's theses is limited. Within the libraries, theses are located in designated areas and are shelved in alphabetical order by the author's last name. The catalog treats theses and dissertations like books and they can be borrowed as such. Theses may be in print, microfiche, or microform.
- In the catalog use the Advanced Search : search by author, title, or keyword limiting to type THESIS.
- For a list of theses from a specific department, use Advanced Search to combine a keyword search for the name of the department with location THESES. E.g., search for "Dept. of Computer Science" with THESES as the location.
- For a reasonably complete list of theses at Carnegie Mellon, use Advanced Search to search Carnegie Mellon University Dissertations in the Subject line.
Other Countries
Center for Research Libraries: Foreign Doctoral Dissertations CRL has more than 800,000 cataloged foreign doctoral dissertations from more than 90 countries and over 1200 institutions.

Welcome to the on-line version of the UNC dissertation proposal collection. The purpose of this collection is to provide examples of proposals for those of you who are thinking of writing a proposal of your own. I hope that this on-line collection proves to be more difficult to misplace than the physical collection that periodically disappears. If you are preparing to write a proposal you should make a point of reading the excellent document The Path to the Ph.D., written by James Coggins. It includes advice about selecting a topic, preparing a proposal, taking your oral exam and finishing your dissertation. It also includes accounts by many people about the process that each of them went through to find a thesis topic. Adding to the Collection This collection of proposals becomes more useful with each new proposal that is added. If you have an accepted proposal, please help by including it in this collection. You may notice that the bulk of the proposals currently in this collection are in the area of computer graphics. This is an artifact of me knowing more computer graphics folks to pester for their proposals. Add your non-graphics proposal to the collection and help remedy this imbalance! There are only two requirements for a UNC proposal to be added to this collection. The first requirement is that your proposal must be completely approved by your committee. If we adhere to this, then each proposal in the collection serves as an example of a document that five faculty members have signed off on. The second requirement is that you supply, as best you can, exactly the document that your committee approved. While reading over my own proposal I winced at a few of the things that I had written. I resisted the temptation to change the document, however, because this collection should truely reflect what an accepted thesis proposal looks like. Note that there is no requirement that the author has finished his/her Ph.D. Several of the proposals in the collection were written by people who, as of this writing, are still working on their dissertation. This is fine! I encourage people to submit their proposals in any form they wish. Perhaps the most useful forms at the present are Postscript and HTML, but this may not always be so. Greg Coombe has generously provided LaTeX thesis style files , which, he says, conform to the 2004-2005 stlye requirements.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this collection!

Dissertations & Theses as Research Sources
Repositories of dissertations and theses submitted by PhD and masters students are good places to survey pre-publication research. Dissertations are usually very narrowly-focused thorough and in-depth explorations of a topic. Dissertations and theses are also excellent bibliography-mining territory. Because submitters of Masters and PhD theses and dissertations are required to conduct a comprehensive survey of the existing literature relevant to their question, these documents often contain useful literature reviews and contain meticulously compiled bibliographies.
Searching Dissertations & Theses
Dissertations and theses in Electrical and Electronic Engineering can be searched across institutions using ProQuest Dissertations and Theses.
- Dissertations & Theses Global This link opens in a new window Dissertations and Theses Global contains indexes, dissertations and some theses. Full-text is available for many dissertations and theses, including those from NYU.
Dissertations & Theses in Institutional Repositories
Many academic institutions host their own repositories of faculty and student research. In addition to dissertations and theses, institutional repositories often contain technical reports , datasets , conference papers and other files associated with conference presentations . The following is a list of some of the more robust institutional Computer Science repositories.
Hundreds of PhD theses and other technical reports from Cambridge University’s Computer Laboratory. The repository contains current documents and extends back to the 1970s.
- Carnegie Mellon Research Showcase Carnegie Mellon’s institutional repository contains conference proceedings, working papers and technical reports, and theses in four separate collections relevant to Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The two main relevant collections are: the “Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering” and the “Robotics Institute” Of the two the “Robotics Institute” is more current.

ETDs: Virginia Tech Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Permanent URI for this community
Virginia Tech has been a world leader in electronic theses and dissertation initiatives for more than 20 years. On January 1, 1997, Virginia Tech was the first university to require electronic submission of theses and dissertations (ETDs). Ever since then, Virginia Tech graduate students have been able to prepare, submit, review, and publish their theses and dissertations online and to append digital media such as images, data, audio, and video.
University Libraries staff are currently digitizing thousands of pre-1997 theses and dissertations and loading them into VTechWorks. Most of these theses and dissertations are fully available to the public, but we will, in general, honor requests by the item's author to restrict access to Virginia Tech only. See our process for Requesting that Material be Amended or Removed .
To search all Virginia Tech print and digital theses and dissertations, use the University Libraries ETD resource guide .
Materials that are restricted to Virginia Tech only may be requested via your own university or public library's Interlibrary Loan program or through the VTechWorks request form that appears when you try to access the item. You might also be able to obtain a copy of the work through ProQuest's database of theses and dissertations. If you are on a Virginia Tech campus but are unable to find the pre-1997 thesis or dissertation you are seeking in VTechWorks, you may also be able to order a physical copy from library storage. Please check the library catalog at http://www.lib.vt.edu/ for physical copies.
The guidelines that apply to Virginia Tech's graduate students as ETD authors can be found at http://guides.lib.vt.edu/ETDguide .

Inland Water’s Challenges in Ungauged International Basins: Identifying the Desiccation Drivers of Endorheic Hamun Lakes
Presented by Arash Modaresi Rad Computing PhD, Data Science emphasis City Center Plaza Conference Room 352
Dr. Mojtaba Sadegh (Advisor), Dr. Hans-Peter Marshall , Dr. Kevin Roche
Inland waters face unprecedented pressures from climatic and anthropogenic stresses, causing their recession and desiccation globally. Climate change is increasingly blamed for such environmental degradation, but in many regions, direct anthropogenic pressures compound, and sometimes supersede, climatic factors. This study examined a human-environmental system – the terminal Hamun Lakes on the Iran-Afghanistan border – that embodies amplified challenges of inland waters. Satellite and climatic data from 1984-2019 were fused, which documented that the Hamun Lakes lost 89% of their surface area between 1999 and 2001 (3,809 km2 versus 410 km2), coincident with a basin-wide, multi-year meteorological drought. The lakes continued to shrink afterwards and desiccated in 2012, despite the above-average precipitation in the upstream basin. Rapid growth in irrigated agricultural lands occurred in upstream Afghanistan in the recent decade, consuming water that otherwise would have fed the Hamun Lakes. Compounding upstream anthropogenic stressors, Iran began storing flood water that would have otherwise drained to the lakes, for urban and agricultural consumption in 2009. Results from a deep Learning model of Hamun Lakes’ dynamics indicate that the average lakes’ surface area from 2010-2019 would have been 2.5 times larger without increasing anthropogenic stresses across the basin. The Hamun Lakes’ desiccation had major socio-environmental consequences, including loss of livelihood, out-migration, dust-storms, and loss of important species in the region.
