Firstly, let me list out what all I would not be able to do. I would have to say goodbye to my daily morning coffee as, without the help of my refrigerator, my milk would have gone bad. And black coffee is an atrocity that I cannot face, forget tasting.

With a grumpy start to my morning, I would enter my washroom to shower only to realize that today would be the day I freeze to death as my instant geyser would not be working.

With my body shivering and my teeth chattering, I would rush to my room only to realize that my phone is on 10 percent battery and my hairdryer will not switch on today. What a miserable situation it would be.

After getting ready somehow, I would rush downstairs to realize that after a long time, I will need to eat some fruit or ready-made items due to the uselessness of my toaster I would have to forgo my usual toast and jam for the day.

As I reach school, I realize it would turn out to be a fun day as due to the absence of electricity, we could be out of our classes for the entire day. It would turn out to be an unintentional picnic by itself. Well, the food may not be up to the mark due to obvious reasons but we would manage with what we have.

The ride back home after our usual class hours would be tiring and sweaty due to the lack of air-conditioning inside the bus, leaving us to battle the city’s humidity and pollution through the panes of our open bus windows.

On a much larger scale, there would be a global crisis as no electricity would mean complete darkness after sunset. It would also lead to a lapse of our economy as online trading and e-commerce would suffer losses of high stakes and fail to record every move or change in numbers and keeping track of the ever-changing stock market would be a whole new nightmare.

It would lead to various complications in the Healthcare industry as most Intensive care units rely on ventilators and various other pieces of equipment that rely on electricity to work and keep patients alive.

On a global stage, there would a standstill situation as getting messages across from one place to another would not be able to take place at a drop of a hat. Likewise, news agencies would have to step down for a day as neither would they be able to shoot any content nor would they be able to broadcast it for a day.

On an industry basis, there would be a huge slow down as almost all technology and machines would shut down for a day leaving production output to zero. Every IT company would face horrors as they would not be able to even implement their basis work for the day, leading to various complications and unwanted situations creating liabilities for the company.

While all of this would be on, there would another face to the entire situation as a whole.

Industries that implement and propagate usage of solar-powered systems would be able to work as usual without any hindrances. For various institutions, sustainable developments would be given first priority and put into use to set off the process of manufacturing again.

And while a majority of the population would miss out on the latest meme, or the launch of the latest song, they would feel a sense of gratification towards having reduced usage of electricity and leading the way to a more sustainable and pollution-free way of life.

Frequent power cuts and blackouts have given us an experience of life without electricity. At such times we feel helpless and frustrated. In the absence of electricity, none can perform his duties to the fullest.

If it is a day in summer and electricity fails, we cannot work, nor take rest. Our whole body would start sweating (perspiring). It is well-nigh impossible to dream of living in the absence of electricity. We are absolutely dependent on it. Our activities grind to a halt in her absence, It is her absence that make us appreciate her value and worth. We light our homes with electricity. Electric appliances provide us with cool atmosphere in summer and warmth in winter. Electricity runs trains and she makes them smoke free. Swift means of communications function because of her, Medical instruments, entertainment machines, irrigation systems and printing tools are totally at her mercy. Now imagine if she goes away for a day or so. Life without her becomes hellish. Banks stop working, offices keep their pens down, patients moan, commuters have to take forced leave, students suffer, examinees study in candle light, little kids cry, hand fans go ineffective, factories grind to a halt and production suffers and what not. The day passes somehow or the other but the night time becomes torturing. Traffic signals fail and accidents take place. Robbers and anti-social elements have a golden chance. If it is summer, the time seems to drag on forever while we perspire in the humid atmosphere. People curse the electricity department and many a time it has to face the public wrath. No electricity even for a day proves that we are helpless in spite of being the conquerors of natural forces. How much slavish our life is and electricity, man’s own creation, has become his master.

Imagine a day without electricity. No electricity, no light bulb, no fan, no air conditioner, no access to any electrical appliance, it seems horrible right? We all know that electricity is an essential part of our daily life. Electricity has made our life very comfortable. Without electricity it is impossible to have a smooth lifestyle. Even the article you are reading right now would not have been possible without electricity.

We are completely dependent on electricity for our daily work, weather it is household work like washing or your daily job like working on a computer. From houses to factories to offices and hospitals electricity is required everywhere.

If there’s a power cut for even one day it will be a massive problem. Factories and industrial work will stop. Production and many other things will stop. We will have to work under the candle light and no fans and air conditioner in summers. It’s hard to imagine to live without electricity for even one day isn’t it? In other words world runs on electricity but think about the people in many of the rural areas who don’t have access to electricity yet and areas where electricity is provided for few hours. Life must be very tough there, No access to any electrical appliances, not even a light bulb or fan.

Differences in urban and rural life due to electricity

In cities and urban areas life is very easy and comfortable as compared to rural areas. Urban areas are provided with twenty four hours of electricity. One can easily wash clothes in washing machine, can get cold water from refrigerator, use laptops and mobile phones, everything on the snap of their finger. But on the other hand life is tough in rural areas because of limited or no supply of electricity. A huge gap is created between urban areas and rural areas because of electricity.

In rural areas life is very difficult as they aren’t able to use several electrical gadgets because of the power cuts and very limited supply of electricity. Because of no electricity access to water is also difficult in rural areas. In current situation because of covid all the educational institute are running online but students in rural areas find it very difficult to attend the classes due to lack of electricity.

Years of struggling has made people in rural areas use to live without electricity. They don’t have any worries regarding to electricity because they are habitual of living without it, but what about urban areas? Forget about one day it’s difficult for people to live without electricity even for few hours. Urban life is so much dependent on electricity.

If we go hundred years back in past when there was no electricity in country. We think that life would have been difficult at that time but no, life was just as smooth as it is now. People were habitual of doing all their work without electricity. Introduction of electricity made their life more easy and it kept on making it easier and comfortable but don’t you think it has spoiled us? Humans are so much dependent on electricity that living without electricity for even one day is tough.

Dependence of humans on electrical appliances

World has become very advanced in technology but none of them will work without electricity. Nowadays everything runs online on our phones but without electricity phones can’t be used. In urban areas access of water is difficult if there’s a power cut. We need electrical appliances for all our works for example washing machine for washing clothes, laptops and mobile phones, light bulbs, fans, television, heaters and the list goes on. We are completely dependent on electrical appliances nowadays.

Overall we can say that electricity has became an essential part of our daily life just like water and air. World has become full of advanced technology but all the technologies run on electricity. From households to industries electricity is required everywhere. Electricity is so important but still there are rural areas where there is no electricity or very limited supply of electricity.

On the other hand urban areas are provided with 24 hours of electricity making the life of people living in urban areas very easy and comfortable as compared to areas but at the same time creating a huge gap in between. Humans are dependent on electrical appliances for almost all the works which somewhat spoiled us. Life will turn very hard if there will be no electricity so we should save electricity for our future.

In 1650, Otto von Guericke invented the first air pump that produced static electricity. Later in the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin proved that electricity and lightning are the same phenomena. He did it by attaching a metal key to a kite string and observing it being charged during a thunderstorm.

In 1791, Luigi Galvani saw a spark of electricity make a dead frog’s leg move. It occurred when two different metals came in contact with the frog. Alessandro Volta used Galvani’s discovery to invent the first electric battery, known as the voltaic pile.

Day without electricity.

Today as we live in a world of technology, one of the most basic necessities of life is electricity. Today we cannot imagine living without it. What if there was no electricity for an entire day! How would it feel? Well! It's Sunday morning and there's something different - no electricity the entire day. Life seems to have come to a standstill without electricity. My first custom of the day after waking up is to head towards the bathroom to brush my teeth, and have a shower. I experienced a chill when cold water hit me; I realized there is only cold water available. The geyser was not working as there was no electricity. Feeling refreshed and revitalized after a cold shower, I headed towards the frost free refrigerator for a snack, only to discover that the food in the refrigerator was warm and had been turned into something new. Refrigerators play an important role in food preservation, but without electricity they are useless. Surely a nice, hot cup of coffee would help me forget the ordeal that I was going through till now. So I ran to the coffee vending machine to have a cup of hot coffee, but realized that without electricity the coffee machine was anything but useful. My hopes of having coffee seemed more like a dream. Reading the Sunday newspapers I realized that there would be no electricity supply for the entire day. I could not watch my favourite TV programmes the entire day. The lift in my apartment was not working so I had to trudge up and down nearly becoming breathless. The exercise was helpful no doubt for my fitness! Just when I needed to send some urgent e-mails on my laptop, it shut down and I could not recharge the same. Co-incidentally, the gas also finished and neither did the induction cooker nor the microwave would work on account of power supply failure, and so I had to be satisfied with cold lunch. Well! Thank the weather, it was not so hot that day, or else I would have got roasted in the heat. Eventually, power supply was restored in the evening and the only thing that I could say was - what a relief! The incident also helped me appreciate the value of electricity as an essential resource. A Day Without Electricity

This essay is being typed on an electric device by someone sitting in a room lit by light bulbs. This system is comfortable and familiar to many people but for many more this is a dream that may take years of back breaking work to turn into reality and even then, it could just as easily never come true. The following is a snapshot of what 24 hours without electricity might feel like.

Waking before the sun rises in pitch darkness, the candles would have to be found and lit by sight. It is harder to get ready without the help of electricity so much more time must be allocated to every task, hence the early rising. If the resources for oil lamps are present these can be lit too but whatever is available would have to do. The clothing for the day would need to be ironed using a non-electric iron which needs constant reheating. If not, wrinkle free clothing must be source or the wearer looks disheveled. On dressing the rest of the day can begin.

Without refrigeration, sourcing food and keeping it edible becomes much more of a challenge. Leftovers become moldy or rotten quite quickly and fresh meat must be cooked and consumed shortly after purchase. Dehydrated fruits, meats and seafood become a huge part of the diet. In a cold country this might not be as harshly felt but in hot regions this could drastically decrease the amount of available calories and lead to unnecessary food wastage.

Without the benefit of electronics, creating music that can be heard by people far away becomes impossible as does participating in jobs that take place predominantly online. The vast store of knowledge that is the internet becomes inaccessible and students and teachers alike struggle with obtaining resources for research.

After dark in a place without electricity, getting home can be very dangerous, especially for women. Without streetlights, the roads become very easy for people with criminal intentions to hide in. Stores are also much less likely to remain open so that the streets become deserted and a valuable source of revenue is lost out on by business owners.

Many aspects of modern life have become so commonplace to us that we barely realize how much they have changed what we can do and how we do it. To live without electricity for even a day would be a challenge.

How to Stay Comfortable Without Using a Lot of Electricity This Summer

So far this year, the Seattle area has been lucky with mild weather. But future heat waves are a real threat due to climate change. We aren’t immune to heat domes, smoke, and other conditions. Heat is the leading weather-related cause of death in the U.S., surpassing floods and tornadoes. Even if the heat isn’t deadly, it can be uncomfortable and cause illness, reduced productivity, and trouble sleeping.

But we don’t have to deal with it. Proper planning can help you stay comfortable and reduce health risks from high temperatures. Try these tips to help you prepare for current and future heat waves without using a lot of electricity this summer.

Tomorrow is going to be hot. What should I do?

1. Avoid adding extra heat to your home.

Electric appliances and lighting give off heat when they’re working, so use them sparingly. Try a no-cooking-required meal or use appliances that produce less heat – a microwave produces a tiny fraction of the heat that a stove or oven does.

2. Cool yourself.

Drink cool, hydrating liquids. Wipe your face, neck, and wrists with a cool wet cloth. If you get really hot, a cold shower will feel good and bring your core body temperature down quickly. Be sure to check for signs of heatstroke if you’re feeling ill.

3. Go downstairs, if possible.

Warmer air usually rises, so if you have the option, downstairs is likely to be cooler than upstairs.

4. Use a fan to cool you.

A fan doesn’t cool the air, but moving air helps your body’s natural cooling processes (perspiration) work better. Fan motors put out heat, so only use them when you’re in the room to benefit from the moving air.

5. Pre-cool your home.

Open windows on the night before a predicted hot day to let natural airflow cool your home down. If the nighttime air is calm, or you’re in an apartment without good cross-ventilation, put a fan in the window to draw in cool air and push out hot air.

6. Trap that cold air.

Before the day starts heating up, close your windows and draw the blinds on windows that are exposed to the sun. Try to keep windows or doors shut when it’s cooler inside than outside.

7. Sleep comfortably.

Your bedroom might not be the coolest room. Consider moving to where it’s cooler to sleep more comfortably. You can even try sleeping in light, loose cotton pajamas on top of the covers.

8. Visit a cooling center.

The City of Seattle maintains a heat safety webpage that updates during events. Bookmark this page so you can know which community centers, libraries, and other public spaces have air conditioning for hot days.

I have a day to plan for hot weather. What else can I do to better prepare?

1. Find and fix air leaks .

Gaps around windows, doors, and structural cracks in some older homes let in hot air and smoke too. Caulk the gaps where you’ve noticed air coming through and install weather-stripping and door sweeps to help year-round.

2. Make some extra ice .

No one wants to run out of ice for their drinks on a hot day. Store ice you’ve already made in a plastic bag or freezer container and start making more to stock up.

3. Shade your home.

Put up bamboo shades or hang light-colored cloths on the outside of your house. These can keep the sun from getting to your house in the first place. Look for where the heat has come in the most in the past and focus there first.

1. Insulate and air-seal your home.

The same insulation that keeps the heat inside in the winter can keep it out in the summer. Get three contractor bids to upgrade your insulation. Your heating bills will be lower, and you’ll be more comfortable year-round. Air sealing will also help keep out smoke.

If you’re renting , let your landlord know if your place is uncomfortable and would benefit from improvements. Have them reach out to Seattle City Light to learn about available incentives.

2. Upgrade your windows.

Better windows provide year-round benefit by reducing heat flow along with the air leaks that can make a home uncomfortable.

3. Install awnings over south-facing windows .

Like with the shades mentioned above, keeping the sun off your home is better than trying to get that heat out after it’s already in. Old photos of Seattle show that many of the older apartment buildings in town originally had awnings over the windows – it’s timeless technology, and it might be time to bring it back.

4. Install a heat pump.

The installation of heat pumps that also provide air conditioning is rapidly rising in the Seattle area. About two out of three new heating systems in Seattle are heat pumps. Ductless heat pumps provide super-efficient cooling and heating for the most-used areas of your home. If you decide a whole-home solution is better, replace your furnace with a ducted heat pump for cooling in the summer and efficient heating in the winter.

Two bonuses! With City Light’s carbon-neutral electricity, your electricity use won’t be contributing to climate change, and with a heat pump you can keep doors and windows closed on smoky days so any smoke can be kept outside.

5. Plant shade trees .

It may be a few years before they do much, but thinking ahead is always helpful. Deciduous shade trees on the south and west side of your home can help keep out the summer sun and let the winter sun come through once the leaves have fallen. Netanyahu’s comments are ‘deeply disappointing,’ the White House says.

The White House and the Israeli prime minister traded barbs on Thursday over the support the United States is providing Israel for its military operations in Gaza, in the latest sign of tensions between the two allies over the conduct of the war.

John F. Kirby, a White House spokesman, said on Thursday that the Biden administration has expressed disappointment to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the Israeli leader lashed out on Tuesday at the United States for withholding some heavy munitions.

Mr. Kirby said that there was “no other country that’s done more, or will continue to do more, than the United States to help Israel defend itself,” adding that Mr. Netanyahu’s comments were “deeply disappointing and certainly vexing to us.”

In response, Mr. Netanyahu said on Thursday that he was “willing to absorb personal attacks if that is what it takes for Israel to get the arms and ammunition it needs in its war for survival.”

It was the latest back-and-forth between leaders of the two staunch allies that have increasingly diverged on how Israel is conducting the war, as both leaders face an avalanche of domestic and international pressure to change course.

Since the Hamas-led attack in Israel on Oct. 7, the United States has largely supported Israel, offering weapons and, for the most part, backing at the United Nations, but the relationship has frayed. Last month the Biden administration blocked a shipment of heavy bombs and artillery shells to Israel — while allowing other weapons to flow — and earlier this month the administration backed a U.N. resolution for a cease-fire over protests from Israel.

At particular issue for Mr. Netanyahu has been the continued weapons support, and this week he has ensured that the dispute remained in the public eye, describing White House actions and words as affronts to him and to Israel.

On Monday, President Biden overcame congressional opposition to one of the biggest arms sales ever to Israel, an $18 billion deal for F-15 jets .

On Tuesday, Mr. Netanyahu released a video statement calling it “inconceivable” that the Biden administration was withholding weapons from “America’s closest ally, fighting for its life.”

The administration said there were no new developments on that score and nothing had been withheld apart from the shipment 2,000 pound bombs , under review since early May over concerns about their use in densely populated parts of Gaza. A White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, said of Mr. Netanyahu, “We genuinely do not know what he is talking about.”

In his comments on Thursday, Mr. Kirby reiterated that no one had done more to help Israel defend itself than the United States.

“I mean, my goodness, this president put U.S. fighter aircrafts up in the air in the middle of April, to help shoot down several 100 drones and missiles, including ballistic missiles, that were fired from Iran proper at Israel,” he said, adding that Mr. Netanyahu’s remarks were disappointing “given the amount of support that we have, and will continue to provide Prime Minister Netanyahu.”

The spokesman for the State Department, Matthew Miller, echoed Mr. Kirby’s remarks, asserting the U.S. commitment to Israel was “sacrosanct.”

“We have proved that not just with words but with deeds,” Mr. Miller said. “I don’t think it is productive to engage in an intense public back and forth about this.”

U.N. experts say arms makers supplying Israel may be violating international law, and other news.

A group of U.N. experts warned arms manufacturers, including Boeing, Caterpillar and Lockheed Martin, that transferring any weapons or weapon components to Israel could make them complicit in serious violations of international humanitarian law, even if those transfers are carried out under existing export licenses or indirectly through an intermediary country. In a statement on Thursday, the experts also warned financial institutions invested in those arms manufacturers, including Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase, that their business relationships could potentially move them from “being directly linked to human rights abuses to contributing to them, with repercussions for complicity in potential atrocity crimes.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel demanded on Wednesday that his coalition partners “get a hold of themselves” and “put aside all extraneous interests” to focus on the war, as divisions within Israel’s government become sharper and more public. Mr. Netanyahu has clashed with members of his own party and with far-right and religious party leaders in his coalition. The wide-ranging conflicts include how far to go in requiring military service by ultra-Orthodox Jews, who controls the assignments of rabbis, leaks to the news media and how much of a voice the far right should have in setting war policy.

The troubled humanitarian pier built by the United States off the coast of Gaza is back up and running, Gen. Patrick S. Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, said at a news briefing on Thursday. The pier was “re-anchored and reestablished” on Wednesday, he said, and “overnight, the transfer of humanitarian assistance from Cyprus to Gaza resumed,” with more than 1.4 million pounds being delivered to a marshaling area, where it is loaded onto trucks. General Ryder said the pier was always intended to be a temporary solution and added that, “contrary to some press reporting on the matter,” there was no end date established for the mission. Aid groups have said that they are hesitant to deliver aid from the marshaling area because of security concerns and that supplies are piling up there.

Cross-border aerial attacks between Israeli forces and Hezbollah continued across the border of Israel and Lebanon on Thursday, with dozens of rockets launched at Israeli towns and an Israeli strike on a Hezbollah commander, according to the Israeli military. Approximately 60 projectiles, including rockets and anti-tank missiles, hit open areas in northern Israel, according to an Israeli military spokesperson. No casualties were reported. The Israeli military also said it had killed Fadel Ibrahim, identified as a commander of Hezbollah’s ground forces, in an airstrike near Deir Kifa in the south of Lebanon. Tensions at the northern border have risen for months, and the prospect of a full-fledged war between the two forces looms.

U.S. lawmakers called for some Palestinians fleeing Gaza to be granted refugee status. In a letter to Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Thursday, 70 members of Congress called for more pathways for relief for Palestinians affected by the war who are relatives of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. “Historically, the U.S. has resettled very few Palestinian refugees,” the lawmakers noted, including just 56 refugees, or 0.09 percent of the total number of resettled refugees, in 2023, and 16 so far in 2024. “Given the dire conditions currently on the ground in Gaza, it is time for this to change,” said the lawmakers, who were led by Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois.

Israel’s energy minister threatened a “power outage for months” in Lebanon if the Israeli electricity grid were hit and disabled for even a few hours by Hezbollah. The statement came from Eli Cohen, the energy minister, in a post on social media on Thursday. Earlier in the day, Shaul Goldstein, the chief executive of the government company responsible for managing the country’s electric grid, said that Hezbollah “could easily bring down the electricity grid in Israel.” Mr. Goldstein’s comments sparked outrage among right-wing media commentators, and Mr. Cohen’s response appeared to be designed to send a message that Israel could not be easily crippled.

Israel’s use of 2,000-pound bombs and other heavy weapons in densely populated areas of Gaza may have consistently violated international law and could constitute war crimes, the United Nations human rights office said on Wednesday. In a report that focused on six attacks last year, the office said Israeli forces “took an expansive approach to targeting” that apparently considered members of Gaza’s civilian administration and Hamas political structures, who were not directly involved in hostilities, as military targets, possibly violating the laws of war. Israel issued a 12-page rebuttal that said the U.N. report was legally unsound and revealed “numerous biases.”

A quiet administrative change advances a far-right Israeli minister’s effort to control the West Bank.

Israel is putting key responsibilities in the occupied West Bank under an administrator who answers to a hard-line government minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who favors annexation of the territory, in what analysts and human rights activists describe as the latest step toward the far right’s aim of expanding Israeli settlements there.

The administrative move has been a longtime goal of Mr. Smotrich, the finance minister and settler leader, and increases his formal authority over many areas of civilian life, including building and demolition permits, a crucial tool for settlers who view construction as a way to strengthen their grip on the West Bank.

It is the latest of several changes over the past two years that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, the most right-wing in Israel’s history, has made to the way that the West Bank is ruled. Since early 2023, the government has eased the planning process for new settlements and gradually transferred more powers from the defense minister, Yoav Gallant, to Mr. Smotrich, a longtime settler activist who wants to prevent the possibility of creating a Palestinian state in the territory.

The moves stop short of fully placing the West Bank under civilian control, and they have limited effect in the 40 percent of the West Bank that is administered by the Palestinian Authority, a semi-autonomous Palestinian-run body. But critics say that they collectively take Israel a step closer to annexing the territory in all but name.

For decades, Israel has defended its control of the territory there by saying that it is a temporary military occupation since the 1967 war that complies with the international laws applicable to occupied territories, rather than a permanent annexation that places the West Bank under the sovereign control of Israel’s civilian authorities. But the empowerment of Mr. Smotrich, a civilian minister, tests that argument to its limits.

The latest move, which creates a civilian head of an area previously overseen only by the military, was finalized by the Israeli military on May 29, according to copies of two military orders seen by The New York Times. It names a deputy head of the civil administration in the West Bank who will answer to Mr. Smotrich, an ultranationalist member of Mr. Netanyahu’s coalition who has a broad portfolio in the West Bank.

Settlers like Mr. Smotrich want to build more Israeli settlements across the West Bank on land that Palestinians hoped would be the core of a future Palestinian state. While previous Israeli governments and generals have built and protected hundreds of settlements, the latest order would likely accelerate that process, analysts and activists said.

Critics have already accused the government of failing to clamp down on illegal settlement construction and violence committed by settlers, and of thwarting measures to enforce the law.

Since the war began in October, the government has cracked down on the territory with near-daily military raids it says are aimed at terrorists. The government has also emboldened settlers and enacted new regulations that have put additional economic pressure on Palestinians .

“We are speaking about a change with a very clear political dimension to permit all kinds of plans for building settlements very quickly and without any obstacles,” said Michael Milshtein, an author and expert in Palestinian studies at Tel Aviv University.

The military has for decades been responsible for civil administration in most of the West Bank as well as for security, and critics say the shift to civilian administration, a longstanding aim of Mr. Smotrich, ties decision-making more closely to Israeli domestic politics. Analysts noted, however, that Defense Minister Yoav Gallant would retain input and could block certain measures.

Aviv Tatarsky, a researcher at Ir Amim, an Israeli nongovernmental organization, said that the order was “historic,” because “for the first time you have in a formal way management in the West Bank that is not done through the army but through the Israeli civil political system.”

The civilian political influence over the military administration already existed to some extent, though it was hidden from view, he said, “but now it’s stopped playing the games.”

A spokesman for Mr. Smotrich did not respond to a request for comment.

The person named to fill the new administrative post, Hillel Roth, is a settler and a member of the religious nationalist community who will likely act to facilitate Mr. Smotrich’s agenda, analysts said.

Mr. Milshtein noted that Mr. Smotrich had separately aimed to weaken the Palestinian Authority, which administers some parts of the West Bank. Mr. Smotrich announced in May that Israel would withhold revenue from the authority, worsening its severe fiscal crisis. In June, Mr. Smotrich said that he had ordered about $35 million in tax revenue that Israel collected on behalf of the authority to be diverted to the families of Israeli victims of terrorism .

Since Israel occupied the West Bank, previously controlled by Jordan, in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, the government has encouraged Jews to settle there, providing land, military protection, electricity, water and roads. More than 500,000 settlers now live among 2.7 million Palestinians in the territory.

Most of the world considers the settlements illegal. Some Israeli Jews justify settlement on religious grounds, others on the basis of history — both ancient and modern — while some say Israel must control the territory to prevent armed Palestinian groups from taking power.
