How To Start A Fitness Center, Gym Membership Business In Nigeria (Step By Step Guide)
Looking to start a gym business in Nigeria ? This article got you covered! In this piece, we’ll be bringing you a detailed guide on how to set up a gym centre in Nigeria .
As the saying goes, “Health is wealth”, and one of the major ways of living a healthy life is via regular fitness and exercise . However, despite the perceived importance of fitness, most people, especially in third-world countries like Nigeria, lack access to standard fitness facility.
Nevertheless, with the growing awareness on the importance of fitness on healthy life, many Nigerians have embraced the act of regular fitness training and exercise. Consequently, the demand for gym centres and professional fitness trainers are on the rise.
If you are interested in this opportunity, follow through this article.
Fitness Industry in Nigeria
Before we bring you the guidelines on how to start a gym /fitness business , let us get you enlightened on some key aspects of the business, as well as the status quo in the Nigerian fitness industry .
The fitness industry is relatively new in Nigeria. This is primarily due to the prevalent lackadaisical attitude of Nigerians towards exercise and fitness training. Over the past half-a-decade, however, there has been growing awareness on the importance of fitness in maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle
Basically, there are various types of fitness services being offered by gym houses and fitness centres within the country. This variation is primarily along gender and age-grade lines. Put aptly, the primary objective of most women who visit gym houses is to trim-down or lose weight. This, to some extent, also applies to the aged people (both male and female). On the other hand, young male gym enthusiasts are more concerned about building up toned – muscular – physique.
With respect to the aforementioned, most Nigerian fitness centres are inclined to provide “weight-losing” and “bodybuilding” services among others to their clients (trainees). Hence, what you see in most Nigerian gym houses include weight piles, Rowing machine and Treadmills among others.
However, the highlight of the fitness industry in Nigeria, which has kept the demand for fitness trainers on the rise, is the obsessive nature of many Nigerian women, who are actively seeking avenues to look fit, plump and as appealing to the eyes as possible. The major patronizers of fitness centres in Nigeria include the female entertainers, sportswomen, models, students and the average “slay queens”.
With the rise in prominence of the Nigerian fitness industry , a number of multi million Naira fitness firms have sprang up, with most of them enjoying massive patronage from all over the country and beyond. Some of fitness firms include Shredder Gang, Mean Trainer and Afri Fitness among others. These fitness firms constitute some of the leading gym houses in Nigeria, with presence in major cities like Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt among others.
On a final note, the fitness industry in Nigeria is a relatively new, albeit fast-growing, one. Though, still relatively insignificant compared to other lucrative businesses, the fitness industry has produced quite a number millionaires. And with the continuous demand for fitness instructors, there is an endless opportunity for those willing to join the industry.
Cost of Setting Up a Gym in Nigeria
Setting up a gym house does not come cheap, irrespective of the scale. This is because an average set of gym equipment requires a sizable amount of money to procure, and procuring on lease is usually not cost-effective in the long run.
Normally, to set up a standard fitness centre or gym house in Nigeria , you would need between 500,000 to 5,000,000 Naira, depending on the scale, as well as the set of gym equipment you are looking to work it. Also, you need to acquire a spacious office/centre, to accommodate your gym equipment, rest room, and office.
For high-end gym houses, with different sets of top grade automated fitness gadgets, you would be looking between 10 million Naira and above to set up such gym centres.
Cost of Gym Membership in Nigeria
Another cost to consider is the cost of gym membership, which typically varies across the country. In Lagos for instance, the cost of gym membership goes for as low as 18,000 per month, which is equivalent to about 220,000 Naira per year. However, this varies depending on the location and scale of your gym house.
In other cities like Abuja, the cost of gym membership could be a little higher, with respect to the class of the target market in the area. Also, in places like Ibadan and Ilorin, the cost of membership is considerably low, and goes for as low as 10,000 Naira.
In a nutshell, to enrol in a gym house in Nigeria , you’d be required to cough out between 10,000 and 30,000 Naira per month or between 120,000 and 360,000 Naira per year as membership fee.
How to Start a Gym Business in Nigeria
Now to the real deal! Starting a gym business , like every other business, requires tact, strategy and of course, money. In this section, we’ll be showing you some tips, as well as steps to follow in setting up a gym business in Nigeria.
Carry out a feasibility study
Some people call it market survey, but in this case, feasibility study is the more appropriate term. This step is very important here, and to a large extent, it determines the success of your business in the long run.
This survey helps you map out your target market, as well as how you can get to them.
Key factors to consider here include;
- location; and
- demographic outlook of the inhabitants; notably the dominant class, age grade and gender in the region.
Typically, a location with large concentration of youths is ideal for setting up a gym house . Also, in highbrow areas, with relatively low poverty level, you are bound to get more customers (fitness trainees) than in low-class locations, with high-level of poverty.
Once you’ve carried out the feasibility study in your desired location and you are satisfied with the result, you can proceed to set up your business.
Create a brand name
Your brand name must be reflective of your business; hence, ensure you take your time to create a suitable name. If you lack the creativity, you can easily hire the service of a creative artist or simply employ the use of a business name generator software.
Once you’ve generated a brand name, you can proceed to put other things in place.
Prepare a business plan
By plan, we mean “business plan”. Before going out to procure any equipment or rent a space, ensure you document all the necessary details, including your objectives (and goals), as well as area(s) of focus and specialty. Every single piece of information that concern or can affect your business should be well laid out in your plan.
Normally, a business plan for a gym business should include (among others) startup capital, goals of the business (short and long-term), gym equipment (and cost), location, access to target market, viability of business, projected income (monthly/yearly), starting gym membership fee, and miscellaneous cost among others.
Once you’ve developed a solid plan, you can proceed to register your business.
Register your business
It is important to note that irrespective of the legitimacy of the service you render and/or goods you sell, if your business is not registered, it remains an illegal business. Therefore, to avoid stories that touch, you should promptly register your new business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and also obtain licenses/permits from other relevant local and national bodies.
Once you’ve registered you business, you are, by law, afforded the opportunity to operate without any form harrasment. Subsequently, you can proceed with the next step.
Rent a space
A space, in this context, does not mean a room or a small condo. For a gym house, a standard gym house space should be around 30m by 20m or more. Getting such expansive space would not come cheap. In places like Lagos and Abuja, you may be looking at a rent of 500,000 to 1,000,000 Naira per annum.
Typically, you need a spacious room, preferably with small sections for private classes and offices. Also, a standard gym house must have a rest room, where trainees can cool off and rest after and in-between sessions.
Procure gym equipment
A standard gym centre requires the following equipment:
- Weight pile
- Ellipticals
- Exercise mats
- Motorized & Manual Treadmills
- Stepper boards
- Ankle weight
- Ski machine
- Indoor cycles
These equipment come at a relatively high cost, which, normally, could be as high as $10,000. However, some of these equipment can be hired on lease, at more affordable prices.
Hire professionals
If you are not a professional fitness trainer, the logical thing to do is to hire a fitness trainer(s). Depending on the scale of your startup, one or two trainers should do (for a small-scale startup).
Promote your new venture and open your gym
A business that provides services like fitness and health services is likely to get most of its customers from the neighbourhood. Therefore, you can print flyers and reach out to the locals in your locale.
Also, to attract customers, make sure your charges are competitive, and should be relatively affordable compared to the standard rates in the industry. Subsequently, as you gain more customers, you can increase the rate.
Start making your money
If you go through the steps in this guide as appropriate, you would start making your money in no time.

The fitness industry in Nigeria:
While there is no breakdown of the NBS data, the economic activity generated by the fitness sector, a market tilted towards adult women and men is, therefore, one to watch closely.
The fitness industry provides jobs for thousands of fitness trainers, instructors, health food producers, equipment manufacturers, and apparel wear companies and increasingly, the content creators that ensure that celebrity fitness trainers’ videos are well packaged for social media networks.
According to the TWOREPORT document referenced above, more men than women are likely to be found at live sport events.
Yet, many more women are involved in fitness and healthy lifestyle activities.
Competitive sport promoters need to begin to find what makes women avoid live sport in order to turn them into fans and promoters of their sport.
One widely held view in the pay television market is that women and children usually make the decision about what content is watched in many homes.
It is time to start actively marketing live sport to women because where they go, children and men go also.
The fitness industry in Nigeria is one to keep an eye on.
While it is growing rapidly in many middle class and upper middle class communities due to lifestyle and health issues, it is a segment of the Nigerian sport industry that could actually serve as an example of growth where the mainstream remains at standstill.
The modus operandi of celebrity fitness trainers could serve as an example for sports rights owners looking for ways to grow interest in their events.
The women and men in the fitness industry are excelling without government funding.
They are leading the way forward and there are lessons to learn from them.
Types of Fitness center (gym) that are Ideal to open right now in Nigeria
Full Scale Coed Membership Gyms
Sports Performance Training Facilities
Apartment Complex Gyms
Intimate Personal Training Studios
Full Scale Coed Membership Gym
The standard in the fitness industry, a coed membership gym is one that is open to men and women and offers a wide variety of equipment to suit the different training preferences of various people.
Although a varied selection of equipment is needed, a coed membership gym does NOT need to be large.
Many of these types of gyms are extremely profitable in a room size of 185 to 288 meters squared.
A gym of this size can be run very efficiently without excessive monthly operating costs or the need for additional equipment.
By working with a New Gym Specialist, you will get the proper amount and variety of equipment to help assure that you meet the needs of your members without overspending.
Nigeria’s growing population and nearly 50/50 male to female split make it ideal for new gyms. Here are some facts about the Population of Nigeria –
With around 200 million people, Nigeria is the largest country in the entire African continent
Nigeria has the MOST inhabitants of any African nation
Roughly 18% of the continent’s population live in Nigeria
Nigeria has 8 cities with over 1 million people
Lagos is the most populous Nigerian city with an estimated 15 million people
Nigeria is the one of the most populous country in the world
Nigeria has had a 60% growth rate over only 2 decades
These above facts show the growth and density of the population of Nigeria.
Along with this growth comes the need for modern equipped gyms to satisfy the demands of the modern Nigerian culture.
Sports Performance Training Facility
Nigeria boasts a large youth population, with more than 90 million people falling into that category.
Only China and India have a larger youth population.
The youthful population presents a great opportunity for gyms catering to athletic performance either to enhance youths for school athletic programs or to engage youths in healthy lifestyle choices.
Soccer is the number one sport in Nigeria, but boxing, (both standard and Dambe martial arts boxing also known as traditional Hausa boxing), rugby and various track and field events are all sports that Nigerians regularly partake in.
This combination of a youthful population and a culture of athleticism creates a genuine need for sports performance training facilities throughout the country.
A sports performance training gym requires a different mix of equipment than a standard membership gym and your New Gym Specialist will create a Complete Gym Package that specifically fits the needs of your sports performance training facility.
Apartment Complex Gym
Urban cities like Lagos and Abuja are experiencing a significant growth in housing.
Lagos is already known as a bustling business center with a fast paced community. Apartment complexes in these cities are being built or renovated to accommodate the growing population and need for modern housing.
Apartment buildings that allocate a room for a fitness center have an added incentive for people to choose to live there.
Modern apartment complexes in Nigeria need modern gym equipment to attract and retain residents.
An apartment fitness room with the right type and amount of equipment creates profit for the apartment complex owner by creating an environment where people want to live.
It also allows the owner to charge somewhat more per apartment rental because of this modern amenity.
Although smaller than a standard commercial membership gym, an apartment complex gym still needs a certain mix of the right type of equipment to function properly. Your New Gym Specialist will create the right Complete Apartment Complex Gym Package for you.
Intimate Personal Training Studio
The economy of Nigeria continues to be on the rise. In fact, Nigeria is listed as one of the “Next Eleven” economies set to become the biggest in the world.
In the Ikoyi area of Lagos alone, the high level of urbanization has attracted a higher income level and upscale housing.
This type of upscale clientele calls for smaller gym centers and often a more intimate, boutique style of one-on-one training.
These intimate personal training studio gyms focus on individual attention to a client’s personal fitness goals by using private or small group training sessions.
The space required varies depending upon how many clients or trainers the studio will have, but the need for certain fundamental pieces of equipment is the same and it is essential to use State-of-the-Art equipment that features upscale aesthetics and high end functions.
Here again, the use of a New Gym Specialist is important to assure that you get the right equipment for a personal training studio environment.
With a young, growing population, a rising economy and an interest in sports and athletic achievement, Nigeria has it all for anyone today who wants to enter the fitness industry as a fitness center owner.
These above 4 types of fitness center are ideally suited for the Nigerian market.
By exploring your local area, you will determine which of these types of gyms is best suited for your area and for your budget.
Whichever type of fitness center you decide upon, now is the time to take advantage of the great opportunity to open a successful fitness center in the country known as the “Giant of Africa.
How To Start?
First, ask yourself: Why do you want to open a gym?
Get clarity on why you want to start a gym or fitness center
Your reason behind opening a gym will help you maintain the focus, clarity, and drive it takes to become a successful enterprise.
Be honest with yourself.
You may find that instead of starting a gym, you want to become a personal trainer or fitness instructor.
Make sure you think through the possibilities and determine if starting a gym is really the right choice for you.
Don’t skip the market research phase
Talk with fitness center owners to find out what it took to get their business up and running.
Learning from those that are already successful in your given field is a priceless education that can save you lots of time and energy in the long run.
Step 1: Get trained and accredited
First and foremost, make sure you have the proper training, accreditations, and experience to start your own gym.
Your clients will be counting on you not just to help them look great, but to keep their bodies healthy and safe using your services.
There are several different personal training certifications you can choose between, and other types of fitness offerings (such as yoga, Pilates, or aerobics classes) will come with their own certifications as well.
You’ll also be responsible for making sure any staff you hire has proper certification.
Step 2: Identify your fitness niche
There are a variety of fitness niches to choose from. Explore these niches below to determine what kind of fitness center you’d like to open.
Specialty fitness center:
This niche typically focuses on one specialty fitness class or activity. Some examples include aerobics, yoga, dance, Pilates, cycling, and much more.
Specialty fitness centers often offer a variety of class options during the week based on differing levels, intensity, and complexity.
Instructors are certified in a particular niche.
Specialty fitness centers can often be more expensive due to the boutique experience, intimate design, and quality instructors.
Monthly packages or memberships are often offered as an option.
Traditional gym:
Traditional gyms often provide a variety of workout options in one location, including fitness classes, strength and cardio equipment, and personal training.
They may provide additional amenities including massage, sauna, tanning, steam rooms, childcare, and more.
These additional services are often offered for an additional fee.
Medical fitness and wellness center:
These fitness centers often provide physical therapy and other medical services to help clients manage, recover from, and prevent health issues.
Usually associated with a doctor’s office or hospital that makes program recommendations.
These centers often have professional staff specialized in managing, tracking, and measuring the progress of clients.
They often provide a variety of educational services for physical and mental wellness, in addition to the typical group fitness classes and gym equipment.
Family fitness and wellness center:
Family fitness and wellness centers include athletic and country clubs.
They often provide a variety of workout options, including group fitness classes, strength and cardio equipment, and personal training.
Family fitness and wellness centers include exercise options for adults, seniors, teens and children.
These centers often provide classes and programs for youth such as swim lessons, sports clubs, summer camps for kids, and childcare.
May offer additional wellness amenities including massage, sauna, tanning, and steam rooms, sometimes for an additional fee.
Step 3: Find the location
Once you determine what kind of gym you want to open, you will have to determine how much space you will need.
First, get clear on how many clients you want to be able to serve in your facility.
Knowing how much space you will need will help you find a location that best suits your requirements.
Do you need street access? Access to parking? Are you in an area with a lot of foot traffic? Will it be hard for people to find you? Are you on a bus route?
Initially, a good location is key to getting clients to your gym.
Many gym owners believe that location is worth paying more money upfront so that your business gets seen.
For Kaylee Cahoon, finding the right location was extremely important.
She wanted to be in an area that was still developing and where many things were happening.
It was also important for her to be around a more highly-educated population, and to have nearby medical facilities since her fitness niche focuses on “educating” the whole body.
Step 4: Figure out what additional staff and equipment you will need
Before hiring fitness instructors and personal trainers, check their training and accreditation carefully.
Ask thorough questions during the interview, and consider “auditioning” the person before hiring them.
You also may want to consider hiring them temporarily for a few test classes or personal training sessions before committing to keeping them as an employee.
When Bread and Yoga first opened its doors, Marcela Xavier taught about ten yoga classes per week.
Eventually, she secured a strong group of teachers so that she could fully focus on the leadership aspects of the business.
Finding a strong group of quality yoga teachers was extremely important to her when it came to fulfilling her overall mission and vision, and she did this by holding auditions for yoga teachers to see how they taught, who they were, and what they were all about.
Some questions to ask yourself in terms of hiring staff:
Will you be the primary fitness instructor at your gym, or will you need to hire fitness instructors and personal trainers?
Will the staff be employees or independent contractors?
What are the accreditations and training that potential staff, fitness instructors, and personal trainers must have?
Will you need fitness center equipment?
If you need fitness equipment, you will need to decide whether to buy or lease.
Leasing can help you stay current on the latest fitness technology, can give you an opportunity to assess your needs before purchasing, and will often include maintenance of the equipment.
However, if you lease equipment, you give up ownership interest, which might end up costing you more in the long run.
Do your research and check with a lawyer before making a decision on whether or not to lease gym equipment.
Step 5: Get financed
You will want to make sure your finances are in good shape so that you can get financed.
Most financing groups and landlords want to see two previous years of tax returns and financial statements, and before starting your business, you should have enough money saved for personal expenses for at least 12 to 24 months.
Step 6: Market your gym
Once you hone in on your customer base, market and promote your business in places customers spend time. This sounds simple, but it takes consistency and dedication over time to build a solid customer base.
Consider hiring someone to take on a marketing, PR, or social media management role, and if you can’t afford that, do some of it on your own.
By coming up with a marketing plan for your gym or fitness center, you’ll be able to focus your efforts and get the word out about your new business.
How to Promote Your Fitness center In Nigeria
Offer Corporate Wellness Initiatives
Having a group of other like-minded people to work out with helps keep gym-goers motivated.
Go to local offices and hand out promotional offers only available through the workplace.
Discounted rates are always a good incentive to get people interested.
Offering a corporate gym membership promotion rate entices new groups of people to visit the gym.
Provide a landing page where new corporate clients can sign up for email updates and learn more information about the gym and your fitness services.
Run Promotions on Social Media
Social media is a great place to connect with new clients. Promotions and contests are some of the most popular posts on sites like Facebook and Twitter.
Consider running a seasonal promotion or contest to get people interested. Use hashtags and follow fitness trends for maximum reach and impact.
Automate your social media management for maximum efficiency.
“What are your fitness goals for this year? Whoever has the best story will win one year of free yoga classes! #NewYearsResolutions.” Or: “New clients who use the code ‘Bikini Bod’ will get a 20% discount off of the summer class of their choice.”
Hold Charity Competitions
Showing your involvement in your local community makes your gym stand out from the others.
Set up a simple online signup form that participants can use to register quickly and easily.
The competition may be a group event or may include single participants. A percentage of each entry fee will go to the local charity of your choice.
The competition may be an obstacle course, a race or a strength test. The winner(s) receive a free membership to your gym or a similar prize.
Advertise Your New Hot Workouts
Keep an eye on fitness trends and offer new workouts while they’re still fresh.
Market these new workouts to clients and new leads through automated social media updates and in email newsletters.
Many new clients come in because they get interested in new workouts that they have heard about on social media or on TV.
Advertising these new workouts that are available at your gym and providing social media updates for these new classes are more good ideas to get more clients coming in.
Run Promotions with Other Local Businesses
Partner up with businesses around your gym in order to make gym membership more appealing.
Offer a coupon for a free pair of yoga pants at the local sports clothes store if the person completes a one-month yoga class.
Promotions like this drive business to the local community core and give people a greater incentive to take advantage of the offer.
Send Automated Reminders to Clients
Clients lose track of when their last gym visit was. For clients who have not worked out in a while, a timely automated reminder lets them know that they’re due for a gym visit.
Text messages are more likely to be opened than emails. Personalized reminders keep clients loyal and engaged.
Run a Refer a Friend Program
A couple of other ideas to get more clients are marketing your gym through word of mouth and referrals.
Friends will refer new potential clients to your gym, especially if they receive an incentive.
The incentive for the “Refer a Friend” program could be a free class, a discount on personal trainer services or a similar fitness coupon.
Manage fitness center Marketing Campaigns and Communication Seamlessly
What is the best way to manage all your email communications, text message coupons, social media promotions, online signup forms, and marketing campaigns efficiently? An automated all-in-one gym marketing solution keeps all your information in one place. It’s easy to use, and the automation capabilities save you time.
Fitness center (Gym business) can be very profitable. Another thing is that the gym business in General also builds one up, be it physically, emotionally and socially.
You’ve got all reasons to kickstart it without delay. Implement all the ideas, I wish you best of luck!

Step 2: Find your fitness center location
Finding a location for your fitness center is important. This is part of what they call visibility study in business, some people call it market survey.
Your location determines the success of your gym business in the long run. As it helps you map out your target market, as well as how you can get to them.
- A location with large concentration of youths is ideal for setting up a gym house
- A location in highbrow areas, with relatively low poverty level, you are bound to get more fitness trainees than in low-class locations, with high-level of poverty.
You will also have to determine how much space you will need. Get clear on how many students you want to be able to serve in your facility.
Knowing how much space you will need will help you find a location that best suits your requirements.

10 Steps On How To Start A Gym Business In Nigeria
A gym or fitness center business is centered around providing personal training or the use of a fitness facility to people who want to keep fit and stay healthy.
The gym business in Nigeria has received tremendous growth in the last few years as more people especially women are beginning to see the need to exercise and stay fit.
Though not an easy line of business, if you are passionate and put in the work, you will reap the rewards.
Here are the steps to follow before starting a gym business in Nigeria.
1. Get professional training
Before you start a gym business, you need to get the proper training and accreditations that make you qualified as a fitness instructor.
Your clients will be counting on you not just to help them look great, but to keep their bodies healthy and safe using your services.
There are several different personal training certifications you can choose between, and other types of fitness offerings (such as yoga, Pilates, or aerobics classes) will come with their own certifications as well.
2. Identify your fitness niche
There are a variety of fitness niches to choose from e.g. personal training gyms, boutique gyms, women’s gyms, powerlifting gyms, and medical fitness gyms to mention a few. Explore these niches below to determine what kind of fitness center you’d like to open.
3. Create a business name
Your business name should be as creative as possible. It should also be short and easy to remember.
4. Register your business
Once you have found a suitable name, register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and get other accreditations and licenses.
A registered business gives your brand more reputation.
5. Prepare your business plan
Your business plan is a written description of your business’s future. It should contain your plans and the methods you intend to carry out those plans.
For example, a business plan for your gym business should contain your business goals (both long term and short-term), capital ( and how you intend to raise them), equipment, location, niche, how you intend to earn (ie membership fee), miscellaneous costs among others.
6. Raise Capital
Depending on your scale and location, you will be needing between ₦1 million to ₦5 million to get started. A good percentage of the money will go into renting a space. You’ll also need to acquire (or rent) some equipment. Some of the ways you can raise capital are through personal funds or loans from financial institutions.
7. Get a good location
It will be of advantage to you if you establish your fitness business in a high profile and easily accessible location as people who reside there are more exposed and are ready to pay money on keeping fit than those who live in the low profile area.
Go for spaces that have standard offices with good amenities your environment will determine if you would get customers.
8. Acquire the necessary equipment
Some equipment that you’d be needing in your gym house include: – Dumbbells – Motorized & Manual Treadmills – Ski machine – Exercise mats – Weight pile – Stepper boards – Indoor cycles – Ellipticals – Ankle weight – Skip-rope – Rowers
You can check the prices on e-commerce stores like Jumia.
Also, note that the equipment can be hired on lease at more affordable prices.
9. Hire professional staff
If you won’t be the main fitness trainer, then you need to hire professionals.
Before hiring fitness instructors and personal trainers, check that they have the required training. Ask thorough questions during the interview, and consider “auditioning” the person before hiring them. You also may want to consider hiring them temporarily for a few test classes or personal training sessions before committing to keeping them as an employee.
Your staff should already have experience in fitness training and in addition, be passionate about the job.

10. Promote your business
Now that you have done all of the above, you need to let your potential customers know about your business.
Use offline strategies like word of mouth, tell your family and friends to spread the word. You can also share banners and posters around your location.
You should use social media marketing and PR methods to promote your business online. By coming up with a marketing plan for your gym or fitness center, you’ll be able to get new clients and customers.
Start by running ad promotions and discounts on your website and social media handles e.g a customer who registers gets a free one-month membership after registration.

Whether you envision a sanctuary for bodybuilding individuals in Surulere or a haven for young professionals in Lekki, the principles outlined in this guide are meant to act as your compass, and will guide each step of the process with clarity and confidence so, fold in. Grab your sneakers and embark on this exciting journey of working and fitness together.
Steps to launch a profitable fitness center in Nigeria
Step 1. Know your target demographics.
Decide who you want to target: body-conscious guys in Surulere or youthful professionals in Lekki? In the world of fitness, getting to know your friends is like having a cheat sheet. You’ll be aware of what supplies to purchase, what courses to teach, and even what music to play (highlife for laid-back vibes, or Afrobeat for intensity, I promise).
Step 2: Obtain Necessary legal permissions and documents
More licenses, permits, and registrations than a high-resistance spin bike might make your head spin. But don’t worry about it! Legal matters are like your gym bag: even though they’re not the most entertaining, you still need to have them. Speak with your local government, register your business, and obtain the necessary permissions. Consider it your pass to the realm of barbells and burpees, without the obnoxious bouncer.
Step 3: Find a suitable location
It is similar to looking for the ripest plantain at the market to choose the ideal location. For all of your sweaty friends to roam around without stumbling over each other like kids at a birthday party, you need easy access, adequate sight, and ample space. Make your gym a place you’d be happy to take your mother to; it’s your second home, so don’t just settle for any old dusty corner.
Buulding up Your Fitness Center
Order equipment: focus on basics first, maybe fancy later.
Filling your gym is the fun part now! Hold on, though! Spend less on the newest and most expensive technology. Focus on your audience, start with the fundamentals, and keep in mind that sometimes a sturdy squat rack is more valuable than its weight in protein powder.
Cost Analysis of Starting a Gym Business in Nigeria
Launching a gym requires meticulous planning. Here’s a brief overview of the estimated expenses:
Location : Depending on size and location, the annual cost of renting or purchasing a place can range from ₦500,000 to ₦5 million.
Equipment: Basic items such as weights, benches, and treadmills may run you anywhere from ₦2 million to ₦5 million. More can be added with fancy machines.
Renos can cost an additional ₦1 million to ₦3 million, depending on the size of the room.
Licenses and permits : Between ₦200,000 and ₦500,000.
Marketing : You may need at least ₦500,000 to start a successful campaign and establish your brand.
Staffing : Depending on the size of your gym and the number of employees, hiring trainers and staff might run you anywhere from ₦1 million to ₦2 million a year.
Keep in mind that these are only estimates and that your actual spending will depend on the decisions you make.
At a Buka, Spread the Word Like Akara! (But Try not to be too loud.)
Even though your gym is a work of art, if no one knows about it, you’re essentially throwing a quiet disco—which might potentially be a really interesting niche market. Use your imagination! Promote your gym on social media, provide free trial sessions, collaborate with nearby companies, and consider organizing a “pump and paint” event for the neighborhood aunties. Remember, more people will attend your fitness fiesta if you shout as loudly as you can without upsetting everyone.
In conclusion
Select the proper employees; they will serve as your motivators, cheerleaders, and walking encyclopedias of fitness information. Therefore, don’t just recruit people who can lift their own weight on a bench. Seek out enthusiastic people with the necessary skills and positive energy. They will be the ones to transform couch potatoes into fitness enthusiasts, and I promise you that even the strongest juju cannot accomplish that change.
