Help children to develop their understanding of fossil formation with this PowerPoint. It explains the petrification method of forming fossils and includes plenty of helpful diagrams. Children will learn about palaeontologists as well as why most fossils that are found are those of sea creatures.

4. Want to make your own fossils out of plaster of paris? Check out directions here .
9. The American Museum of Natural History has a drag-and-drop interactive where students sort fossil layers from oldest to youngest. Great for relative dating practice.
13. Coprolites are fossilized dung. While that sounds pretty gross, they can be colorful and pretty! Scientists can observe coprolites and learn about what the organism ate and make inferences about their habitat. Learn how to make your own coprolite for students to explore here .

Rocks: rocks and fossils
Produced by the Hamilton Trust, these resources give details of eight lessons on rocks and soils. This includes lesson plans, practical activities and all student materials. Students find out about what is under their feet. Students are always fascinated by rocks and, in this strand, they describe rocks and compare their properties after tackling some exciting activities. They discover how soil is formed from rocks and investigate the permeability of different soils.
