Change In Career: 20 Non-Hospital Jobs For Nurses To Consider

by Guest Contributor

As a child, I had always thought that nurses working in hospitals have the coolest uniforms in the world. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wear pleated skirts and a cap, right? Sadly, doctors came in second because they only wore robes. But growing up, I realized that the nursing attire is a hard-earned piece of clothing; you’ll never get it unless you’re determined to have it.

Before becoming a full-fledged nurse, you have to study for four years to get a nursing degree, then review for a licensure examination. Yes, time isn’t the only thing you invest, but you also need to be financially ready to cover all the necessities you need to get through everything. Once you become a registered nurse, you can work in a hospital and wear that beautiful white uniform with pride.

Are hospitals the only venue for nurses?

One of the best things about a nursing course is its flexibility; you learn different skills that you can apply in different working fields. In many cases, not all nurses want to work in hospitals; others even go out from their profession and pursue another career. And there’s nothing wrong with that. If you are a nurse, and you want to work outside hospitals, then you do have a lot of choices. Here are 20 non-hospitable jobs for nurses to consider:

1. Health Programs Nurse

This is one of the non-hospital jobs that nurses can consider. There’s no doubt that the development of health programs enables folks in the nursing profession to make a true difference in the entire world. These nurses improve outcomes of certain health programs and make sure that the costs aren’t too high.

2. Paramedic Nurse

Basically, these are nurses who are stationed in an ambulance. They provide emergency medical care to patients before arriving at the hospital. While this is not a traditional nursing role, it’s entirely possible to shift from a mainstream nursing job to become a paramedic nurse, though this comes with extra training. It’s a stressful job but also highly rewarding.

3. Health Visitor Nurse

The main focus of a health visitor nurse is to work with women and families with babies or children under 5 years old. He or she generally ensures that the development of infants, babies, and kids goes as expected.

4. Informatics Nurse

Informatics nurses utilize health information systems to not only communicate but also manage patient data. Their main goal is to assist developers to understand how clinicians use the new technology in the daily flow of work.

5. Telemedicine Nurse

Telemedicine nurses utilize computers and video to connect effectively with patients that live in remote locations. They also use technology to talk to patients with chronic conditions who need monitoring or those who are unable to come to the clinic.

6. Home Health Nurse

Home health nurses are handy in helping patients who have just returned home from a surgery, are terminally ill or disable, or are recovering from an injury or illness. They offer both long-term and short-term care. They can handle patient assessment, medical administration, and wound care, among other things.

7. Nurse Life-Care Planner

Nurse life-care planners are highly qualified to come up with a long-term care for patients who suffer from serious injuries or illnesses. They work with insurance companies, lawyers, doctors, or businesses  to arrive at decisions on the potential costs as well as needs of appropriate medical care.

8. Nurse Educator

Nurse educators work in universities and colleges to teach in classrooms and provide clinical knowledge to students of nursing. Moreover, they may work in outpatient and inpatient healthcare facilities as they educate and orient nursing aides and new nurses.

9. School Nurse

School nurses work with kids of different age groups, from early childhood to high school-aged. They administer care when necessary. Some of the tasks they handle include educating students on an array of health topics, treating minor injuries, and dispensing medication per the orders of a doctor.

10. Public Health Nurse

Public health nurses work in a state or county health department, or even in a correctional facility. A public health nurse can also work in a business to assist, monitor and control any safety or health issues. These professionals offer screening tests and administer immunizations.

11. NGO Nurse

Non-governmental organizations normally need help to improve the world on a personal level, working with those in poverty or who are suffering as a result of natural disasters or war. Undeniably, they offer rewarding career options.

12. Bioterrorism Research Nurse

This nurse is extensively knowledgeable in matters concerning the development and behaviour of pathogens.

13. Toxicology Nurse

Toxicology nurses have a deep understanding of poisons as well as their effects on humans.

14. Hazardous Waste Nurse

A hazardous waste nurse has an understanding of the devastating consequences of hazardous waste on the health of populations.

15. Environmental Health Nurse

An environmental health nurse understands how the behaviours of humans affect the planet. They also understand how the planet affects the health of humans.

16. Forensic Nurse

Forensic nurses are often needed to collect evidence after trauma from victims and/or perpetrators. They have an understanding of both law and medicine, and are able to identify wounds and document factors needed in court cases and beyond.

17. Vaccine Research Nurse

These nurses make sure that folks are immunized against different illnesses. They also review the effectiveness and possible side effects of vaccines in humans.

18. Federal Health Care Nurse

These nurses work in federal health care development programs in order to influence health outcomes for various populations.

19. Nurse Lobbyist

Nurse lobbyists speak to senators and congressional representatives with the hope of encouraging particular health care ideas to either receive funding, create legislation, or reform current laws.

20. Procurement Nurse

This is a nurse that handles the procurement of equipment for a medical facility. They offer their expertise to help facilities find the best equipment at a reasonable price.

Nursing is a vast field experiencing huge growth. Actually, according to predictions by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field will account for employment growth of 16 percent by 2024. This just shows the number of job opportunities for nurses out there!

Nurses working in humanitarian aid deliver vital medical assistance to people affected by disasters and conflict. Working as a humanitarian nurse is rewarding and challenging, as well as an amazing way to use your medical skills to help those in need. However, there are many routes to work in humanitarian aid and nursing, so what is the best way to become a humanitarian nurse?

To become a humanitarian nurse, you firstly need to be qualified as a medical nurse in your home country. You then need to do additional qualifications to specialise in humanitarian nursing. After this, you should apply for jobs or short-term missions with NGOs focused on providing medical aid.

The humanitarian industry needs qualified medical staff, including nurses, to work on their projects all over the world delivering vital medical relief. Working as a humanitarian nurse gives you unique work experience as well as a chance to practice nursing on the frontline of world emergencies.

Humanitarian Nurse Qualifications

If you want to work as a humanitarian nurse you need to get the right qualifications . Firstly, you need to be a qualified nurse. In most countries this means doing a university degree or specialised course to become a registered nurse. You will also need to get some years’ experience as a nurse working in your home country before being able to do humanitarian work.

Humanitarian NGOs need nurses with formal qualifications and some years’ experience because being a nurse working as part of an international aid programme can be highly demanding and difficult work.

Once you have your formal nursing qualifications and a few years’ experience, to become a humanitarian nurse you should then do some relevant courses to prepare yourself for humanitarian work.

There are many relevant courses in humanitarian health provided by aid organisations. You can either join humanitarian nursing courses run by NGOs, universities or online. To become a humanitarian nurse, you should combine your formal nursing qualifications with some training in humanitarian health.

Humanitarian Health Online Courses

If you are interested in working as a humanitarian nurse, Emory University offers an online course on Health in Complex Humanitarian Emergencies . We think it’s the best short course providing an overview of the key concepts of humanitarian health. Follow the link to the course’s page.

We also highly recommend the University of Copenhagen’s online short course in Non-Communicable Diseases in Humanitarian Settings . Only taking around 15 hours to complete, we think it’s a great addition to the CV of anyone applying for humanitarian nursing roles. Click the link to find out more.

Another great online course for those looking to become humanitarian nurses is the Manchester University course Global Health and Humanitarianism . It takes a wider approach and looks at how humanitarian aid can address public health issues. The link is to the course’s page.

Humanitarian Nursing Organizations

Now that you have gained your nursing qualifications, as well as completed some relevant aid courses, to become a humanitarian nurse you should apply to the right organisations. Many international aid NGOs work responding to health crises.

Humanitarian organisations conducting medical work that recruit humanitarian nurses usually fall into two groups. The first are NGOs providing emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict, displacement or disasters. The second are aid agencies that run longer-term health programmes tackling issues such as HIV/AIDs or on sexual and reproductive health (SRH).

When applying to work as a nurse in humanitarian aid you should decide which type of humanitarian organisations is best for you. Firstly, aid NGOs running emergency responses often take nurses on shorter missions. The advantage of this is that you can often keep your nursing job in your home country, or sign-up to a nursing agency, between doing shorter trips for humanitarian work. Example s of organisations that take humanitarian nurses like this include Médecins San Frontier (MSF) – Doctors without Borders and UK-Med .

If you want to become a humanitarian nurse and do longer term jobs, on projects to improve health outcomes for people affected by chronic crises or poverty, you should apply to humanitarian organisations that focus on health development. Examples of organisations like this can be Medecins du Monde (MdM) – Doctors of the World, and Save the Children . When aiming to work as nurse in humanitarian aid, research the aid organisations and their projects to see what is best suited your qualifications and work ambitions.

Humanitarian Nurse Roles

Nurses working in humanitarian aid can take on several different roles within health projects. Humanitarian nurses can work as registered nurses (RN) in field hospitals, as well as emergency room and ICU nurses.

Other roles for humanitarian nurses include working on vaccination campaigns, conducting health assessments, training local nurses and working with local health authorities. When aiming to become a humanitarian nurse you should consider your qualifications and expertise when deciding what role to take.

Alongside directly giving medical assistance to people in need, humanitarian nurses can also work in programme management roles. Humanitarian aid projects need medically qualified staff, including nurses, to oversee the set-up, implementation and coordination of health projects. These roles, often know as Medical Coordinator or Health Programme Manager, involve managing the medical team, planning health assistance delivery, controlling the budget and working to get the logistics needed in place.

Often nurses working in humanitarian action begin as staff delivering medical assistance and then progress into management roles.

As well as practicing and management nursing roles, for nurses working in humanitarian aid there are also roles focusing on specific issues. For example, humanitarian nurses can work on projects improving maternity outcomes or working with children affected by disasters. There are also roles focusing on gender-based violence (GBV) as well as mental health and psycho-social support (MHPSS).

There are also humanitarian nursing roles relating to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) as well as palliative care. When becoming a humanitarian nurse, aid agencies have a wide variety of roles they need qualified medical nurses for.

Humanitarian Nurse Missions

Humanitarian missions for nurses are often short-term deployments, usually to emergency responses. Humanitarian nurses who take on medical missions often keep their nursing jobs in their home countries, or work for a nursing agency. Humanitarian missions for nurses are often to urgent conflict and disaster zones. The work can be very challenging as medical facilities in these places can be damaged or in poor condition. It can also be difficult to get all the medical supplies needed. However, doing humanitarian nursing missions is an amazing experience and fantastic way to provide medical aid.

To join humanitarian missions as a nurse you usually sign-up for a deployment roster of an aid NGO. Applying to the roster does not guarantee you a humanitarian nursing mission, but being on the register means you are ready to travel urgently into disaster zones.

The emergency roster allows humanitarian organisations to keep qualified and trained staff ready for when disasters happen. Most large medical NGOs such as Medecins Sans Frontier (MSF) – Doctors Without Borders and International Medical Corps (IMC) maintain deployment roster for humanitarian nurses

Humanitarian Careers now offers career coaching.

Want to become a humanitarian worker? Get tailored career guidance and gain an in-depth understanding of the aid sector through a 1-2-1 coaching programme.

Humanitarian Nurse Jobs

If you are looking to take on humanitarian work as a nurse longer-term, then you should apply for nursing jobs in international NGOs. Taking on a job as a humanitarian nurse allows you to work on a project for sometimes several months or a year. Nursing jobs in humanitarian aid are often on programmes responding to larger and more endemic health crises such as treating diseases like malaria or HIV/Aids.

Nursing jobs in humanitarian aid can also focus on building local capacity in health, for example by training national nursing staff, helping to improve clinics and hospital management or working with health authorities. These humanitarian nursing jobs allow you to have a longer-term impact with your nursing skills.

Jobs for humanitarian nurses can be applied for either directly on the NGOs website or through job boards such as reliefweb.int . Humanitarian organisations recruiting nurses for jobs include Médecins Du Monde (MdM)-Doctors of the World, International Medical Corp, Save the Children, World Vision and the United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO).

To become a humanitarian nurse, applying for these jobs in the field will give you a chance to provide medical assistance to some of the poorest in the world as well as work to make significant health improvements around the globe.

How we hire

UNICEF Australia is determined to build a better world where all children and young people can thrive, and to do that, we need to build a team that is diverse in perspectives and experiences. And this begins with our hiring process.

We believe hiring is a two-way conversation and decision; we’re truly interested in getting to know you and we're curious about what's important to you. We also ensure that you have the opportunity to discover more about us through the process.

Step 1. Take the time to stand out

When you see a role that interests you, show us how it's the right for you. Prepare by exploring our website, getting to know our purpose, and familiarise yourself with any information about the role prior to submitting your application.

Step 2. Getting to know each other

For most opportunities, we start with a short conversation so we can learn a little more about each other. The more questions you have, the better. We then have an in-person interview where you will meet with the people you’ll be working with.

Step 3. Decision time

We take every hiring decision seriously. We continuously seek feedback along the way, from you, all those you meet, and from your referees. If you don’t progress after a final interview, you will always hear back from us and you can seek feedback.

Step 4. The final steps

If we both decide this is a great match, we will need you to complete one final step, as working in a child-focused organisation comes with many important checks to properly safeguard children, but we will tell you more about that at the right time.

Russia detains French NGO worker in Moscow on spying charges

Russia has arrested a French NGO worker on suspicion of spying on its military , a move that is likely to further strain already frought relations with Paris.

The Russian authorities claimed, without providing evidence, that the Frenchman was involved in the “targeted collection of information in the field of military-technical activities of the Russian Federation”. They have launched a criminal case against him for allegedly violating the country’s law requiring any person receiving foreign support to register as a “foreign agent”.

“Such information, if obtained by foreign sources, may be used against the security of the state,” it added.

Moscow did not name the Frenchman, who was detained at a cafe, but the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue identified him as its employee Laurent Vinatier.

The NGO, which is based in Geneva and works to prevent and resolve armed conflicts through mediation and discreet diplomacy, said it was trying to secure Mr Vinatier’s release.

“We are aware that Laurent Vinatier, an adviser at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, has been detained in Russia,” the NGO said in a statement to AFP news agency.

”We are working to get more details of the circumstances and to secure Laurent’s release.”

Mr Vinatier faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

His LinkedIn profile describes Mr Vinatier as a “conversationalist” and shows that he has worked at the Geneva NGO for over a decade, focusing mostly on former Soviet republics, Turkey and the Middle East.

The French foreign ministry said it was aware of the arrest of a citizen and that its embassy in Moscow had requested consular protection for him.

“It is one of our citizens working for a Swiss NGO,” French president Emmanuel Macron told a TV station on Thursday evening. “It was in no way someone who was working for France.”

“We will follow this closely and he will receive all consular protection.”

Mr Vinatier’s arrest came at a low-point for relations between Russia and France, most notably after Mr Macron’s repeated statements that his country would not rule out deploying troops in Ukraine .

Moscow has warned that French troops, including non-combatant military trainers sent to support Ukrainian bases, would be legitimate targets for Russia if they were sent to Ukraine.

Activists have criticised the new Russian law requiring anyone receiving foreign support as a foreign agent.

The Kremlin’s critics have denounced the law and similar newly enacted legislation as an attempt by Moscow to crack down on independent media and political activism.

Russia has made several arrests of people it describes as alleged spies since the Ukraine in February 2022.

Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, was arrested on espionage charges in March 2023, and Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist, was held in late 2023 for failing to register as a “foreign agent”. Both have strongly denied any wrongdoing, and say they were engaged in normal journalistic activities.

MOSCOW (AP) — A court in Moscow on Friday ordered a French citizen accused of collecting information on military issues in Russia be held in jail pending investigation and trial.

Laurent Vinatier was arrested in the Russian capital on Thursday as tensions have flared between Moscow and Paris following French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements about the possibility of deploying the country’s troops in Ukraine .

The authorities accused Vinatier of failing to register as a “foreign agent” while collecting information about Russia’s “military and military-technical activities,” which could be used to the detriment of the country’s security.

They did not provide details of the accusations beyond alleging that Vinatier repeatedly traveled to Russia to collect this information. Under Russian law, it is a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison.

Vinatier appeared in court on Friday. Russia’s state news agency Tass cited his lawyer as saying in the courtroom that Vinatier admitted his guilt and maintained that he simply didn’t know about the requirement. The report also said Vinatier apologized to the court.

The judge ordered the man to be remanded in pre-trial detention until Aug. 5.

Vinatier is an adviser with the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Geneva-based nongovernmental organization.

Later Friday, the Geneva-based NGO said it was doing “everything possible to assist our colleague Laurent,” such as by helping to secure legal representation for him and reach out to Russian authorities.

“As the case proceeds, we continue to seek information about the circumstances leading up to his arrest and the charges made against him,” it said.

The charges against Vinatier stem from a recently adopted law that requires anyone who collects information on military issues to register with authorities as a foreign agent.

Human rights activists have criticized the law and other legislation adopted lately as part of a multi-pronged Kremlin crackdown on independent media and political activists intended to stifle criticism of its actions in Ukraine.

Arrests on charges of spying and collecting sensitive data have become increasingly frequent in Russia since it sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

Recent high-profile arrests include Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested on espionage charges in March 2023, and U.S.-Russian journalist Alsu Kurmasheva , who was taken into custody in October 2023 on the same charges as Vinatier.
