Job overview

We are currently seeking experienced Nursery Nurses with good clinical and communication skills to join the 0-19 Health Visiting service in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The post holder will join our forward thinking, integrated workforce supporting the delivery of the Healthy child Programme to improve outcomes for children and families living in Newcastle upon Tyne.

We are looking for motivated professionals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a skill mixed team.  You should have excellent knowledge of child development and experience of working with children in a variety of settings.  This role will involve making a valuable contribution to the assessment and monitoring of child development, offering family support, advice on parenting and facilitate health promotion sessions.

You will have good communication skills, be a team player and be organised to work effectively with health colleagues and our partner agencies.

You will be supported through a 6 month training package; to assist you in developing your knowledge, and to facilitate your personal and professional development in public health and the healthy child programme. 

Access to a vehicle and possession of a full driving licence is essential.

Main duties of the job

You will be working within the 0-19 Children’s Service, assisting in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme to a defined population, working within a  skill mix team under the supervision of Health Visitors. You will be expected to participate in the development of a range of health promotion initiatives which aim to improve the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people. To contribute to the assessment of need with children, young people, their families and communities. To participate in planning, implementing and evaluating interventions and support, contributing to health and wellbeing. You will be expected to work city wide and independently in a variety of locations including clinics and clients homes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Permanent & Fixed term for 9 months (may be extended)

  • Required to work within a 0-19yrs Children’s Service, assisting in the delivery of a family centred Public Health Service to a defined population. Working with a multi-disciplinary agency approach.
  • To participate in the development of a range of health promotion initiatives which aim to improve the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people.
  • To work under the direction of Health Visitor/ Public Health School Nurse to contribute to the delivery of the service, deliver the Healthy Child Programme.
  • To contribute to the assessment of need with children, young people, their families and communities.
  • To participate in planning, implementing and evaluating interventions and support, contributing to health and wellbeing.

Person specification

Qualifications & education, essential criteria.

  • NVQ Level 3 in Childcare or equivalent in Childcare (e.g. NNEB / BTEC National Diploma in Early years / Cache Diploma in Child Care Education or equivalent level of education in Child Development)
  • Hold a valid driving license and able to travel effectively and independently to multiple locations around the city in one day whilst transporting equipment.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of working with children/young people & families
  • Knowledge of child development and early learning
  • An understanding of children’s safeguarding issues and legislation
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Relevant work experience in health or community setting
  • Demonstrate an understanding of an individual’s diverse needs and rights
  • Demonstrate an awareness of issues surrounding confidentiality

Desirable criteria

  • Has an awareness of Public Health Issue for Children & Young People living in Newcastle
  • Experience of working within Early Help Frameworks to support families.

Skills & Abilities

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective team working skills
  • Able to work with direct and indirect supervision
  • IT skills – Microsoft applications
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
  • Presentation skills
  • Teaching skills –able to run small groups i.e. weaning
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently or as part of the wider team
