Pursue a Part-Time PhD: Know Everything

  • July 4, 2023

Pursue a Part-Time PhD

A Part-Time PhD is a post-doctoral degree for those who want to pursue their PhD but need more than the full-time requirement. It’s also known as a “mini” or “sub” PhD, and it’s becoming more popular as it allows you more flexibility with your time and studies. Many choose this route because they’re interested in research but want to avoid full-time commitments. Other people may need the extra income from working on their thesis project during evenings or weekends instead of completing a full course load during the day job weekdays.

Table of Content

1. What is a Part-Time PhD?   2. Part-Time PhD: Admission Process   3. Part-Time PhD Eligibility   4. Part-Time PhD Programs   5. Fees for Popular Part-Time PhD Courses in India   6. What is the status of a Part-Time PhD Holder in India?

What is a Part-Time PhD?

A part-time PhD is a degree program that allows students to pursue their PhD in their spare time. This may sound like an easy way out, but it’s not. Many people who pursue this route find themselves overwhelmed by the amount of work required and need help with balancing their studies with other responsibilities like work or family obligations.

While some students may be able to complete their entire degree within one year (or even less), most will take longer than this because they typically have outside commitments such as jobs and families that need attention during different stages of the program.

part time phd from jnu

Part-Time PhD: Admission Process

The first step to applying for a Part-Time PhD program is to create an account on the website of your desired university. Once you have created an account and logged in, follow these steps to apply:

  • Fill out the application form with all necessary information, such as your contact details and any other relevant details about yourself.
  • Upload documents like certificates or degrees if they are required by the selected university (this can be done through uploading).
  • After handing over your information, a confirmation will be sent to you by the university.
  • After receiving the confirmation, you start to prepare for your entrances and research methodology.

Part-Time PhD Eligibility

You must be a citizen of India or any other country member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Various universities in India offer a Part Time PhD program, so you can find one that suits your needs.

If you want to pursue a Part-Time PhD course, ensure the Central Panel recognises it for Examination and Certification (CPC). It verifies whether the program meets specific standards and requirements the government sets. If CPC doesn’t recognise your university, they won’t be able to offer any certificate or diploma until their recognition is revoked or lifted off their list!

The fees for popular part-time PhD courses vary depending on where you live but generally range between Rs 50,000 – Rs 75000 per year (depending on which city/state location). However, scholarships are available through organisations like National Scholarship Foundation that could help offset some costs if needed.

Part-Time PhD Programs

Several universities and institutions in India offer part-time PhD programs to accommodate individuals who cannot pursue a full-time research degree. These programs are designed for working professionals, researchers, and individuals with other commitments who wish to earn a doctoral degree while continuing their careers or other responsibilities. Here are some prominent institutions in India that offer part-time PhD programs:

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT): Many IITs nationwide offer part-time PhD programs in various fields of study. Some notable IITs include IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur.
  • Indian Institute of Management (IIM): IIMs, renowned business schools in India, offer part-time PhD programs in management and related disciplines. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, and IIM Lucknow are some of the prominent ones.

Part-Time PhD: Job Opportunities

If you’re looking for a job, one option is to consider a part-time PhD. There are many benefits to pursuing this degree and getting a job along the way. First, it’s important to note that there are no strict requirements for earning your PhD on top of working full-time; therefore, many different opportunities are available to those who have already earned their degree in other fields (such as medicine or engineering).

Suppose you’re interested in working at an organisation such as Google or NASA but want to avoid distractions from your studies. In that case, becoming an administrator might be right up your alley! Administrators oversee operations within organisations and make sure everything runs smoothly by keeping track of budgets & supplies needed by employees/staff members within each department; if something goes wrong with one department’s supplies, then all departments will need extra funds from management so everything stays running smoothly without any interruptions which can lead back into lousy news coming down upon us all again due later on down the line at

If you want to pursue a Part-Time PhD , take it phd admission 2023 , the best thing to do is analyse your eligibility criteria. Research the various universities and colleges that offer part-time PhDs in India. This will help you choose which program fits your needs and goals.

Part-time PhD courses for working professionals likely to be rolled out

The regulations allow part-time PhD programmes, provided applicants satisfy eligibility conditions for full-time PhD programmes. The changes will come into effect in the upcoming academic session.

Universities in India will now be able to offer part-time doctoral programmes to working professionals, provided they attend at least six months of the course full time, according to officials at the high education regulator.

The doctoral candidates will have to attend at least six months of course work in full time. The professionals will also need to submit a no-objection certificate (NOC) from employers.

The provision will be a part of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022, which will soon be notified by the education ministry, officials of the University Grants Commission said on Saturday.

“Their PhD work will be assessed in the same way as done for full-time PhD students. The applicants for the part-time PhD will be working professionals and, hence, they won’t be eligible for PhD fellowship,” UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said.

The doctoral candidates will have to attend at least six months of course work in full time. The professionals will also need to submit a no-objection certificate (NOC) from employers.

“The applicants for part-time PhD will have to provide a NOC from their organizations stating that the employee is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, the employee is permitted to devote sufficient time for research, facilities in the employee’s field of research are available at the place of work, and the employee will be relieved from duty, if required, to complete coursework,” Kumar said.

Many Indian Institutes of Technology, including the one in Delhi, offer part-time research programmes with similar norms. Officials at several central universities, including Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, said they do not currently offer part-time PhD courses presently.

“No such provision is there in Delhi University. All PhD programmes are offered in regular, full-time mode to ensure high quality research,” said Rajesh Jha, political science professor at Rajdhani College.

“PhD is a full time course in JNU. However, the university allows teaching and research fellows employed only in Delhi-NCR to register as candidates,” an official said, seeking anonymity. “Working professionals from other fields are not allowed as of now.”

Affiliated universities will be allowed to set their own criteria for the part-time courses. “Since universities are autonomous, the academic councils of the universities will be allowed to decide their own entry qualifications for the part-time PhD programmes,” a UGC official said, seeking anonymity.

The commission had in March issued a draft of the amendments it made to the rules related to doctoral courses, proposing several changes, including making undergraduates who have done four-year programme and with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 eligible for PhD admissions.

The commission is also doing away with the mandatory requirement of publishing research papers in peer-reviewed journals for the submission of PhD theses.

M.Phil/Ph.D Programme

The Centre has two separate research degree programmes: the Master of Philosophy programme leading to the award of an M.Phil. degree and the Doctor of Philosophy leading to the award of the Ph.D degree. However, the MPhil programme has been discontinued from the academic year 2021-22. Now the centre admits students directly in PhD programme.

The usual duration of a PhD degree at the Centre for Political Studies is four years full time. The required standard of the doctorate is that of a distinct and original contribution to the domain knowledge of the subject. The candidate must show initiative in presenting a theoretical and conceptual framework for devising new ways of looking at problems. The Centre places emphasis on acquisition of critical theoretical skills and in-depth regional, linguistic and cultural knowledge. Prospective research students will have the unique opportunity to work on an exceptionally wide range of topics, theoretical and critical, supervised according to the expertise of a wide range of academic staff across the Faculty.

Eligibility

To be eligible to submit the PhD thesis, the first step is completion of the course work. The course work for PhD programme is spread over two semesters. Students are expected to complete the course work in the first two semesters.

A student admitted to the PhD programme must complete four courses, two of which are compulsory:

1. Philosophy and Methods in Social Sciences

2. Approaches, Concepts and Methods of Political Analysis

In the first semester two compulsory courses are designed to equip and train students in the methods and techniques of political research, along with an introduction to methodological debates and issues in social sciences, as well as to the basic approaches and concepts of political analysis. There will be an end-semester examination as part of the PhD qualifying examination for students to continue to next semester.

In the second semester, every student must select two optional courses, in consonance with their research interests. The choice of the optional would be decided by the research needs and specialization stream chosen by the student.

The students must obtain a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.00 to be awarded an PhD degree. A student who obtains a CGPA of less than 5.00 in the Course work is not eligible to submit his/her thesis and is disqualified from earning the PhD degree.

The progress of each student will be monitored and reviewed by the Research Advisory Committee (RAC). There are two more members in the RAC along with the supervisor.

PhD students must complete their research proposal within two semesters of the registration to the PhD program. The Research Proposal is finalized with the help of the RAC.

The title of the thesis and synopsis must be confirmed by the Committee for Advanced  Studies and Research.

The PhD thesis is to be submitted within a duration of eight semesters, or the date decided by the university for the same. During this period each student will be required to make a presentation as part of their progress report.

Each thesis will be examined by the supervisor and two external examiners. Only after favourable reports reach the office of the Controller of the examinations from both supervisor and the external examiners, the viva-voce will be held.

PhD degree is awarded only after successful defense of the thesis in the viva-voce by the student.

Grading system

Internal assessment follow the ten point grade scale as adopted by the university.

Research Themes

The Centre seeks to promote research within the four broad areas of Political Theory, Indian Government and Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Relations.
