France Excellence Eiffel scholarship program

Call for applications 2024 is closed. The next call for applicatio 2025 will start in October 2024.

The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program was established by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to enable French higher education institutions to attract top foreign students to enroll in their masters and PhD programs.

It gives opportunity to the future foreign decision-makers of the private and public sectors, in priority areas of study, and encourages applicants from foreign countries up to 25 years old at master’s level, and applicants up to 30 years old at PhD level.

2024 Campaign Timeline

• Opening of the call for applications: week of September 18, 2023
• Deadline for the reception of applications by Campus France:  January 10, 2024 included .
• Publication of results:  week of 8 April, 2024 .

PhD fees in France

PhD fees in France are fixed at a particular rate by the State. Home and international students pay the same rate at the doctoral level.

All PhD students at state-funded universities are required to pay €380 per year as a tuition fee. Since a French PhD lasts around four years, you’d be looking to pay around €1,580 in tuition fees for the entire duration of your degree.

However, there are always additional administrative costs to consider when planning your budget. Private institutions set their own tuition fee and are usually higher than the fee at state-funded universities. Tuition fees at private French universities can range between €3,000-€10,000 .

PhD scholarships for international students in France

Even though PhD fees in France are fixed, it is a huge commitment to fund the entire four years of your course. Not to forget your living costs as well. You can choose from a number of funding options available for both national and international students

Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Programme

The Eiffel programme is a prestigious scholarship scheme, designed to attract the best international postgraduates to study in France. It awards a variety of funding at both Masters and PhD level, including bursaries for complete degrees, as well as support for periods of study mobility.

Eiffel funding for PhD students is awarded for a maximum of 18 months. You will be awarded a €1,700 monthly allowance , along with medical insurance, subsidised housing and international round-trip airfares.

CROUS Scholarships

The CROUS Scholarships are awarded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and are means tested. If you are awarded one, you will receive up to €571.30 per month to cover accommodation and living costs, depending on your level of need.

Conventions Industrielles de Formation par la Recherche (CIFRE)

As part of the Conventions Industrielles de Formation par la Recherche (CIFRE) , you will complete a 3-year full-time work contract leading to PhD research for a French company and French public laboratory. You will receive €23,484 per year .

Other doctoral employment contracts

A doctoral contract (contrat doctoral) is a job placement within a research laboratory. These are mainly offered within public institutions (to students of any nationality).

You will receive benefits such as a PhD salary and social security, however you will also be subject to income tax.

The contract is for three years and is renewable for one year. There are two types of contract (and two levels of PhD salary): research only (lower pay grade) and research + professional tasks (teaching).

There are a number of other scholarships available for international students, such as the Horizon Europe Scheme or the Erasmus Mundus funding that you might be eligible for. Regional authorities also provide funding for foreign students in their region.

Top 10 Scholarships in France for Foreign Students

France has become one of the most popular study destinations for international students. However, study and living costs in France is not always affordable. Although annual tuition fees at public universities is low at €200-€600, it could go as high as €10,000 at private universities. Living costs is around €10,000 a year. Fortunately, there are a number of French scholarships for international students that are being offered.

Eiffel Excellence Scholarships The Eiffel scholarship program was developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a tool to allow French higher education institutions to attract the best foreign students for master’s and PhD degree programs. Eiffel scholarship-holders on Master’s courses receive an allowance of €1,181 and scholarship-holders on PhD courses receive an allowance of €1,400. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return trip, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance. The programme does not cover tuition fees.

French University Scholarships for International Students  »

École Normale Supérieure International Selection Each year, the ENS organizes an international selection allowing about thirty of the most promising international students, either in Science or in Humanities, to follow a two or three-year course at the ENS. They receive a monthly stipend of approximately 1,000 Euros for 2-3 years.  About 30 foreign students are awarded each year.

Ampere Scholarships of Excellence at ENS de Lyon The ENS de Lyon and its partners offer scholarships for excellent international students to enrol in its Masters programs in the Exact Sciences, the Arts, and Human and Social Sciences (excluding Professional Masters in teaching) through the Ampere Scholarships of Excellence. The scholarships cover €1000/month for a duration of 12 months and is renewable with conditions.

Emile Boutmy Scholarships at Sciences Po University Sciences Po created the Emile Boutmy Scholarship s after the founder of Sciences Po in order to attract the very best international students from outside of the European Union who are applying and previously admitted to Sciences Po University. The scholarships can take different forms ranging from €5,000 to €10,000  for 2 years of postgraduate study or €3,000 to €12,300  for 3 years of undergraduate study.

Université Paris-Saclay International Master’s Scholarships The Université Paris-Saclay would like to promote access to its master’s (nationally-certified degree) programs to international students, taught in its member establishments. The scholarship is €10,000 per year  and a maximum of €1,000 for travel and visa expenses is also awarded.

Grenoble Institute of Technology Foundation Scholarships The Grenoble Institute of Technology Foundation supports a scholarship program for international students who wish to pursue an international master program at Grenoble INP. The grant amounts to 5,000 euros per semester.

INSEAD MBA Scholarships The INSEAD Scholarships are limited in number and there is significant competition for each award. These scholarships are granted under various criteria and fall into two major categories: need-based and non-need based (based on either merit, nationality, gender, professional background, leadership abilities, field of previous studies etc.). The value of the scholarships range from $5,000 to $25,000.

HEC Paris MBA Scholarships HEC Paris offers generous scholarships to international students from different countries and backgrounds. HEC scholarships fall into various categories: merit-based, need-based or based on specific criteria. The amount of the scholarship varies from €6,000 to €24,000.
