Newspapers have an important place in the world today. The presence of newspapers is must on the breakfast table. They are the mirrors of the world. The press is referred to as the fourth pillar of democracy. Newspapers are the mightiest of the mighty. They are the custodian of truth and human rights. They serve the mouthpiece of the public. They are the link between the people and their government.

We are living in an age of space ships and jumbo-jets.

The world is a small unit. We can not remain cut off from others. We have to know the latest developments taking place all over the world. The newspapers tell us about various developments in the social, political and economic and spheres.

Newspapers give us the latest news. It is the first and foremost function of a newspaper to bring news from North, East, West and South, that is, from all parts of the world. A newspaper touches all topics and satisfies all classes of readers- statesman, students, politicians, sportsmen, public men, travellers, scientists, scholars and businessmen. It tells unemployed people where to apply for a job. Chronic bachelors and sisters can go through matrimonial advertisements and get life partners.

Besides giving us news from all parts of the globe, the newspapers possess literary value. Articles by well-known writers, views and reviews by able critics – all enlighten us. They contain much material of a permanent nature.

Newspapers are a very powerful tool of propaganda. They shape public opinion. The leading articles in a newspaper influence the readers who form their opinion about an issue mainly on the basis of arguments containing in the leading articles. A newspaper is a sort of public platform through which we can criticise the government.

Newspapers also good means of advertisement. Businessmen, manufacturers and industrialists advertise their goods through them. The modern man is deeply influenced by the advertisements and he buys those goods which are most advertised in the newspapers. Moreover, they serve as our companions during a journey. During the days of the war, newspapers boast the morale of the public by playing up the heroic exploits of our defence services. They sometimes expose the high- handedness of government officials. During election days they educate the voters about the merits and demerits of individual candidates.

Newspapers arose national consciousness and raise the mental and moral standards of the people. When some misfortune or calamity overtakes a particular part of the country. Newspapers make us aware of the condition of the people in distress and appeal to the people for help. Many newspapers collect defence and flood relief funds.

Newspapers are said to be the ears and eyes of the world. They no doubt report the various events that take part in different parts of the world. They also reflect the reactions of the people. They play a good role in moulding public opinion. Great leaders like Gandhiji and Nelson Mandella used the newspaper to awaken their countrymen from their slumber. The British newspapers aroused the conscience of the English people by inviting their attention to the miserable condition of the British soldiers wounded at Scutari. Gandhiji used the newspaper to remove untouchability from the country.

The press has an ugly side also. Sometimes the press presents news and views through coloured glasses. Newspapers with leftist leanings are very critical of papers with slightest views. Communal newspapers fan communal hatred and riots. Newspapers should adopt a code of conduct by which they should report news and views in an objective and impartial manner.

Perceptions of the importance of local newspapers

The survey indicated that newspapers play a far more complex role in the civic life of communities than many Americans believe.

On the surface, most people do not feel that their local newspaper is a key source that they rely on for local information.  For instance, when asked, “If your local newspaper no longer existed, would that have a major impact, a minor impact, or no impact on your ability to keep up with information and news about your local community?” a large majority of Americans, 69%, believe the death of their local newspaper would have no impact (39%) or only a minor impact (30%) on their ability to get local information.

Younger adults, age 18-29, were especially unconcerned. Fully 75% say their ability to get local information would not be affected in a major way by the absence of their local paper.  The same was true of heavier technology users: 74% of home broadband users say losing their paper would have no impact or only a minor impact on their ability to get local information.

Yet when asked about specific local topics and which sources they rely on for that information, it turns out that many adults are quite reliant on newspapers and their websites. Of the 16 specific local topics queried, newspapers ranked as the most, or tied as the most, relied upon source for 11 of the 16.

Local newspapers continue to be a key information source

Among all adults, newspapers were cited as the most relied-upon source or tied for most relied upon for crime, taxes, local government activities, schools, local politics, local jobs, community/neighborhood events, arts events, zoning information, local social services, and real estate/housing.

This dependence on newspapers for so many local topics sets it apart from all other sources of local news.  The internet, which was cited as the most relied upon source for five of the 16 topics, was a distant second to newspapers in terms of widespread use and value.

This sense from the public that newspapers are a place where they can turn to for information on a wide range of local topics, more so than other sources, confirms findings from other Pew Research Center studies, particularly a report on which news organizations tend to break new information in local news reporting conducted in Baltimore and research on what news is available from different sources produced as part of the State of the News Media 2006 report. 2

The problem for newspapers is that many of these topics are followed by a relatively small percentage of the public. As noted in Part 2 of this report, just 30% of adults get information about zoning, 35% about social services, 42% about local government, and 43% about real estate. Thus, overall, the total number of Americans who rely on newspapers for the local information that matters to them is smaller than is the case for other platforms such as television.   

For instance, 48% of those who get information about taxes turn to newspapers, more than double the percentage who turn to the next most popular platforms, the internet (20%) and TV news (19%).  But when translated as a percentage of all citizens, just 22% of Americans rely on newspapers for tax information. Thus, while newspapers command this subject area, most people simply do not seek out information about the subject of local taxes.

People may be making quite logical choices in this. Past PEJ studies have found that local newspapers typically have 70 to 100 stories a day. The typical half-hour local TV newscast is closer to 15. 3 So it is logical that newspapers would offer coverage of more topics in a community, while television might concentrate on a more limited number that attract the widest audience. Indeed, as PEJ found in a 2006 study, “In local metro dailies, citizens were far more likely to learn about things like taxes, education, zoning commissions and the activities of government than they would in most other media.” 4

This, however, also has implications about what could happen if a newspaper in town were to disappear. If television has focused on covering weather, traffic, and breaking news, and that is what people look to this platform for, will television begin to cover taxes and zoning and education if the local newspaper no longer exists? Would new digital sources emerge to cover the hole if a local newspaper cut back its coverage or vanished altogether? And would the approach of these new sources be fully journalistic in nature?

Newspapers matter less to adults under age 40 as a local information source

Generational preferences add yet another layer of complexity. For adults under age 40, newspapers do not hold nearly the same appeal. Consider this stark difference: among all adults, newspapers are the clear top source for seven local topics (and tied with the internet as the top source for four other topics). Yet, among adults under 40 newspapers are the clear top choice for one topic, taxes, are tied with TV news for another topic, crime, and tie with the internet for four other topic areas. (The specifics of these differences are spelled out in Part 5 of this report.)

For all ages, the strength of newspapers comes from aggregating an audience by offering a wide range of information, even if each subject or story has limited audience. That model may be vital from a civic standpoint, but it is traditionally expensive and it is not clear what the incentive is to replicate it if newspapers were to disappear.

The name of the first newspaper issued in India was Gazette Bengal. James Augustus Hicky, an Englishman, wrote it in 1780. Other newspapers including the Indian Gazette, Calcutta Gazette, Madras Gazette Courier, and Bombay Herald were published in the years that followed the launch of this one. Following the first Indian independence struggle in 1857, there were more newspapers published in more Indian languages than ever before. Overview of the role of media in society, works cited.

In today’s society, the flow of information among the citizenry plays an important role towards the development of an informed society. To this effect, the media has been instrumental in ensuring that the population gets current news and information on different issues affecting various societies.

Arguably, without the media, the world would consist of an ignorant population devoid of any relevant information relating to issues affecting their environment. With this in mind, it could be argued that the media provides the backdrop against which we make sense of any new conditions and information that we encounter in a world that is increasingly becoming globalized.

Since its conception, the media has been hugely influential in the development of the society. The media can be used to drive public opinion, report on current news and advance some social values. The media is at best a complex genre which may be broken down into a large number of sub-genres such as news stories, opinion columns, advertisements, sports and horoscopes to name but a few.

As such, the role of the media in today’s society is important because it essentially helps individuals get access to valuable information, educate the people in the communities and is a useful, affordable and an economical tool for entertainment.

In today’s society, the social issue that has particularly struck individuals through the decades is that of the media. In this study, the various opinions held in regard to the media and how it operates shall be provided. Through the analysis of relevant literature, a brief yet informative discussion of the various benefits that have been enjoyed as a result of the media shall be presented. This shall be done by highlighting key areas where the media has been instrumental.

These areas include but are not limited to: provision of information, a source of education and knowledge, link between members of the global community and a source of entertainment. The differing opinions propagated by media critics shall also be presented. This shall at the end help us understand the roles that the media plays in society as well as the extent to which the media has been successful in performing its duties.

As such, it shall be a worthwhile endeavor to shed some light on the benefits as well as the costs that have risen due to the presence and effects of the media in our societies. This analysis shall help in the provision of a clearer understanding on how the media affects society.

The media is arguably one of the most powerful agents for change and the betterment of society. Its role as the society’s eyes; indeed a ‘watchdog’ constantly monitoring and critiquing the actions of those in authority for the betterment of society are some of the attributes that previously made the media seem as a positive influence to society.

The ability of media to so accurately reflect the mood of the society and advocate for people to fight against social injustices and vices portrays the media as a tool for promoting justice, equality and harmony among the masses.

In regards to this statement, the current states of affairs indicate that societies are ridden with selfishness and actions aimed at advancing individual goals. This can be derived from the argument raised by Michael Meyers who claims that today’s media does not educate the audience but train them (Kramer, Meyers and Rothstein 582).

This he attributes to the fact that the media outlets no longer providing credible information. In this regard, the audience does not buy the truth, but what prominent figures want them to believe. The author is trying to bring out the fact that media is biased.

The proposed biasness has its root in the anti-intellectual and anti-democratic media. In addition, the media’s advertisement of products and services is an act aimed at enabling the consumers to make informed choices. As Bernt explains, the skills and artistic nature used to present persuasive advertisements help consumers relate products to their lifestyle and preferences (193).

Texts and images represented in advertisement can signify a myriad of meanings to the viewer. All this is in an attempt by the creator of the advert to persuade the consumer to think, feel or act in a predetermined manner (Bernt 194). Advertisement is therefore more of an educative venture than a deliberate attempt to sway the consumer in any predetermined direction since in the end; the consumers are better informed of the variety of brands that are at their disposal.

Bernt suggests that the heavy emphasis of advertisements in media is due to the fact that advertisers are the dominant sources of revenue for most modern media (193). The influence that advertisements have on the people is colossal as can be inferred from the rise in sales for corporations that engage in large-scale advertisement.

Bernt further asserts that the persuasive nature of advertisements has had a great effect on American culture in regards to the relationship between working hard and purchasing power (193). Bernt asserts that advertisements have “replaced Puritanism or the Protestant work ethic as the driving force in American society that causes people to work hard in order to shop even harder (193).”

The various forms of entertainment availed e.g. Movies, sports, interactive programs and Music productions are very important means of relieving stress after a long day at work. In addition, they help alleviate boredom. As such, the sole agenda of such products is recreational and providing means for people to enjoy themselves and connect (Bellah et al 67).

For example, through satellite television providers like DSTV people all over the world are able to enjoy the entertainment genre that best suit their preferences. Examples include movies, sports, music and news. Truth be told, football clubs would never have gained such a strong and wide fan base were it not for the media.

In regards to change in journalism, Pavlik highlights on how journalism has been affected by the transformation of the new media (Fernback 163).

In his opinion, new media technologies have greatly affected the traditional perspective of journalism. This he explains by expounding on the new journalistic trends such as changes in the contents provided to the audience as news, changes in how journalists work, structural changes in news organizations and changes that have occurred in the correlations between media outlets, journalists and different audiences (Fernback 163).

These changes brought about by new media technologies have to a large extent led to the contextualization of journalism; a situation whereby journalism has become less objective and practical.

On the same note, Palvik (as cited by Fernback 163) further notes that these new trends perceive journalists as interpreters of current events who in their efforts “empower the audience and reconnect communities (Fernback 163).”

According to Palvik, the new transformations being experienced in media outlets can be attributed to the availability and emergence of online infrastructure, high degree of customization, instantaneity and interactivity that characterize new media. In his point of view, Palvik believes that such developments will at the end make journalism a better tool to promote democracy (Fernback 163).

Evidence of such developments can be derived from the emergence of the internet and the online architecture that supports this vast source of information. Through online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia and the various search engines, people are able to access information and learn about different issues that affect their lives.

In addition, students in all academic fields are able to do more research in their designated fields and as a result, they become more knowledgeable in these areas than they would have been while using the traditional means of acquiring knowledge. Similarly, the internet has also provided people with a global means of communicating and learning about each other through websites like “facebook” and “twitter”.

People from different countries globally are able to interact and socialize in the comfort of their homes without the inconveniencies caused by travelling as well as the enormous costs that would have otherwise been incurred. These facts prove Palvik’s assertion that new media is at the forefront in empowering the masses (by providing useful information) and connecting communities (interactive nature of the internet, radio and TV talk shows e. t. c.).

On the other hand, Preston (as cited by Fernback 163) contends that the transformations being experienced in media are as a result of political, social, economical and communication patterns rather than technological developments.

Preston asserts that the interrelation that exists between social and informational sciences accompanied by non-academic and industrial literatures can be used by media so as to develop an equitable society and ensure social order (Fernback 163). In his book reshaping communication , Preston uses the aforementioned aspects to develop a model that explores the social role of information and communication in societies today (Fernback 163).

In his opinion, Preston argues that our cultural, informational and social bearings are hinged not on technological advancements, but on the socioeconomic, political and communication trends that we adapt (Fernback 164). In this regard, it can arguably be stated that the role of the media in society is not determined by technological advancements, but by the socio-technical paradigm (Fernback 164).

The positive view of the media has greatly been challenged with time. No longer do the various media outlets stand out as the ‘last front were nobility and idealism still had a foothold.’ Instead, the media just like any other business has been influenced by competition and ratings. As such, it has been noted for a fact that media outlets do at times express their own biased opinions which may not always be ideal or noble at that.

For example, Gay Talese attests to the fact that the New York Times editor Gerald Boyd refused to print a story about an interracial wedding simply because it never emphasized on Black victimization (Kramer, Meyers and Rothstein 575). According to Gay Talese, any story that would soften the perception people had on such issues was disallowed and could not be printed (Kramer, Meyers and Rothstein 575).

In this case, the Media’s actions which were previously perceived as being selfless and socially motivated have been exposed to not always have been driven by benevolence. These actions are at times resounded with self interests and personal gains for the media houses and the corporations that sponsor them.

The previous view of the media’s ability to correctly reflect on the society’s mood has also been greatly questioned as the media does at time appear to affect the set the society’s mood as opposed to reflecting it through the use of propaganda. (Kramer, Meyers and Rothstein suggest that the one of the media’s greatest power is in its ability to subtly influence our opinion (575).

They further assert that in events that elicit a lot of public opinion, propaganda plays a great role and polarizes people along lines that they may not necessarily have taken had they not been “persuaded” to do so.

This subtle psychological nudges can be used to further the cause of big corporations in the form of advertisements or by politicians who want to sway public opinions for their own good. To this effect, the people’s previous trust in the media report has therefore been greatly clouded by this realization.

In terms of the unbiased reporting which had for a long time been viewed to be the hallmark of the popular media, it has been noted that some media reports are actually aimed at making the recipient of the information form a certain pre-determined opinion thus destroying any illusion of un-biasness (Kramer, Meyers and Rothstein 575).

Media outlets can therefore set out to further some social cause which they believe in. Using the cultivation theory, Burton propose that exposure to some kinds of media often cultivate certain attitudes and values (Steffen 455). As an example, Steffen sheds some light on how Arab media has in the recent past adopted the western form of journalism and media presentation (455).

In this regard, the author states that even journalists from countries such as Egypt and other Arabic countries which has stringent media policies accept western media values such as accuracy and balance (Steffen 455). As such, the reporter’s opinions and attitude will rub on the general population thus coloring their view of some events.

In addition, the aforementioned assertion that advertisement aired in different media outlets is aimed at making the consumer better informed has been changed by evidence which strongly suggests that advertisements are aimed at actively influencing the decision that the consumer makes or may make in future (Steffen 456).

What this means is that advertisement is no longer a primary tool for marketing, instead, it has been used to combat the aggressive competition. To this effect, only the consumers suffer because the advertisements no longer help them make informed decisions about the products but instead, the advertisements influence their judgments by giving half-truths.

An especially troubling fact that revealed through various research efforts is that uncontrolled media in some instances leads to desensitization of the population on issues such as violence.

Continuous exposure to media violence especially on the young and impressionable segment of the population can lead to catastrophic results as has been witnessed before in the various random shootouts that occur in our schools. Research shows that media violence encourages aggressive behavior and leads to pessimism in children (Burton 123; Steffen 456).

This information contradicts the aforementioned perception of the media as a guardian and propagator of social values since the compelling evidence presented by research showed that media also leads to breaking of social values and leads to a disruption of harmony through the violence it encourages.

On the same note, rampant advertisements through media outlets have in the recent past characterized modern media. These advertisements aim at influencing the consumer to maintain or develop some form of ideology (Bernt 194). This close relationship that media and advertising have developed raises concerns over the influences that the media may be willing to wield so as to achieve the advertising objectives.

A closer observation of the movies and other entertainment forms presented by the media revealed heavy advertisements therein. These rampant acts of branding were previously unknown to many and their effect though unconsciously administered is substantial.

The media’s promotion of social values is also at times only used as a cover to influence consumers by use of advertisement (Fernback 164). Due to these advertisements, naive recipients of the information presented are unwittingly influenced into buying the products that the particular advertisements promote.

This is at best a very irresponsible behavior by the media since most people are favorably disposed to agree with sentiments that are projected by the media. These misuses of social issues as a marketing tool have also changed the positive role that the media was supposed to deliver. This is mainly due to the fact that the media is being used as a tool for furthering the objectives of corporations at the cost of an unsuspecting population.

The role played by the media in today’s society cannot be understated. However, caution should be taken because as expressed in this study, not all media is healthy. Through this research, the knowledge that has been transferred herein should not make the public skeptical of the media but should help them become more skeptical about the issues being addressed through various media outlets.

This will invariably transform them from being passive, unquestioning and all-believing recipients, to active and questioning recipients of the information which is provided by the media. Nevertheless, a free and vibrant media is necessary for the good of the society. An unfettered media is the hallmark of a truly unbiased society. However, one should adopt a more questioning stance when dealing with any information provided by the media.

Newspapers have been a primary medium for journalism since the eighteenth century. Since then, new creative tendencies and technologies have changed news production and its evolution. Radio and television, that once were called New Media, seemingly could have jeopardized the existence of the newspaper, however, history proved that instead of disappearing it had to reinvent itself and consequently bring new contents in order to adapt to new times. Even the fact that many newspapers around the world are going out of business, does not mean necessarily that newspapers will disappear, on the contrary, traditional media is slowly shifting its model because they no longer have the strength to concentrate information as before and consequently, new media is developing through other business logics. As mentioned, the arrival of free news on the Internet has played a part in falling revenues for print media. As newspapers and new communication technologies, are trying to still be profitable, major changes regarding content are going to take place in order to still compete in a rampant world of immediate information. From public affairs news to a more entertainment driven news, there must be a huge shift in the near future in terms on news production in pursuance of its own niche market. The aim of this essay is to bring up the idea of a two-way relationship between digital and print news in which both are trying to coexist. The first part approaches the way online news have gained territory in comparison with its counterpart the printed newspaper which is, presumably in crisis. The second part will address on how the content in newspapers has to be revised in order to adapt to new ways of news consumption. In the last part I will focus on how market plays an important role on news production and how media follows its rules in order to maintain audiences and still be profitable.

India has always advocated importance of free press, since it became independent, except for the brief experience of censorship under emergency regulations of 1975-76. Yet it suffers from many inadequacies like caste and religious affiliations, which still exercise a powerful influence on journalist as any member of society. Journalists claim to be objective but the slant becomes obvious when it is reporting of foreign affairs, sensitive issues that bother their funding agencies and government. The present paper focuses on the history, importance and working attitudes of journalists and their effect on readers.

Role of newspapers in influencing society and youth.

Hickey’s Bengal Gazette was the first newspaper to be published in India. In 1780, Augustus Hickey, a staunch critic of the East India Company, ventured to publish it. After successful operation for two years, Warren Hastings ordered its closure, because he found the content too subversive.

Indians like newspapers as much as for the news as for their views which could be quite anti-establishment. Thus, free airing of dissent, the hallmark of a good newspaper endears it to so many Indians. For some, it has become an addiction. In meetings, conferences, gatherings, and ordinary tea shops, people discuss and argue over the news published in the papers of that day. The editorials are treated as sermons of a wise man, and these columns sway public opinion with astounding effect.

Political parties of both left and right, independent media houses, and large business houses publish newspapers targeting the society, and the youth, in particular. It is no secret that the owners of the newspapers often force the editorial staff to promote their agenda. To a large extent, this strategy succeeds. They shape their readers’ views, and set the value system of the society. For the aspirational youth today, the internet might have become pervasive, but in India, newspapers, both print and electronic are considered the loadstones to follow in life’s path.

Apart from news, people read them for advertisements, and entertainment, and job and spouse searches. In a nutshell, the influence of newspapers on society and youth is larger today than ever.

The demise of the newspaper has long been predicted. Yet newspapers continue to survive globally despite competition from radio, television, and now the Internet, because they serve core social functions in successful cultures. Initial chapters of this book provide an overview of the development of modern newspapers. Subsequent chapters examine particular societies and geographic regions to see what common traits exist among the uses and forms of newspapers and those artifacts that carry the name newspaper but do not meet the commonly accepted definition. The conclusion suggests that newspapers are of such core value to a successful society that a timely and easily accessible news product will succeed despite, or perhaps because of, changes in reading habits and technology.

Almost everybody reads the newspaper daily. One reads it with curiosity every morning. Different purposes. Young graduates scan the job advertisement pages. Lottery addicts pour over the lottery results. The schoolboy looks at the detailed happenings in cricket and other sports. The head of the household reads about government matters and other events. Business entrepreneurs go through the business news. Housewives looking for topics like cookery, health and beauty care tips etc. Casual readers look for sensational topics like loot, murder, kidnapping etc. Others go through the daily predictions of the zodiac. There are others who are interested in the articles and the letters to the editor. Those who love the glamour world read the pages on fashion movies and film stars. India is a developing country. Most of the people are poor and illiterate with false promises. Newspapers help in forming public opinion. They keep the people aware of the activities of the government.

In a democracy, there should be an efficient and fearless press. The press refers to newspapers, magazines, the news section of radio and television, and the journalists who work for them. Press is the mirror of society. It acts as a watchdog of democracy. It is the duty of the press to watch the activities of the government. Its duty is to highlight the failure of the policies of the government and pinpoint its lapses.

The first newspaper published in India was called The Bengal Gazette. The Bombay Samachar is the oldest existing daily newspaper. It was first published in Gujarat in 1822. Anand Bazar Patrika, Punjab Kesari and The Times of India are some of the other old newspapers.

Newspapers make people aware of every field of society. Once every week every newspaper publishes vacancies in all fields. Job seekers get much benefited through this. A weekly matrimonial supplement is also published with almost every newspaper and its related news and events. Newspapers also contain the schedules of programmes on various television channels and theatres. It helps people to plan their day accordingly. News related to the sport has become very important nowadays. So almost all the newspapers publish sports news with elaborate pictures and charts. Newspapers also carry weather forecasts and other useful data like prices of various food items in different markets.

In the present age, corruption is present in all walks of life. Newspapers play an important role in highlighting the menace of corruption. The people are made aware of the corrupt practices prevalent in various departments of Government and other agencies.

Newspapers act as a link between the government and the people. They make the people aware of the policies, programmes and activities of the government. This gives an opportunity to the people to raise their grievances when necessary. It helps the people to know the Government plans and policies. This is very necessary for a democracy. On the other hand, the newspaper also makes the government aware of the problems, faced by the people.

Information is fed to the newspapers by a number of agencies. The press Information Bureau gives information to the Press on the government policies, programmes and activities. It receives feedback from the people. India has four major news agencies Press Trust of India united News of India. Samachar Bharti and Hindustan Samachar. The newspapers are published in English Hindi and other regional languages.

The Role of Newspapers

The newspapers, as the voice of the people, play a very important role in a democracy like India. They form an important link between the public and the government. It is through newspapers that the public comes to know about the priorities, policies and programmes of the government. Similarly, the government can keep itself well informed about the grievances, aspirations, expectations, opinions, etc., of the public through the press. Newspapers also supply news, views, comments, etc., to their readers about national, international and local affairs. They help information of public opinion on matters of national and global importance. They not only mould but also reflect public opinion. The editorial and leading articles play a significant role in the matter. Then there are interviews of people and personalities who actually matter. Newspapers are the real watchdogs of democracy and of the rights and privileges of the people. Newspapers can also be instrumental in bringing out desired social, cultural and attitudinal changes in society. They may be effectively used as an instrument of national integrity, unity, harmony and solidarity and also in removing social evils, such as superstitions, evils of untouchability, dowry, communalism and casteism.

The powers and influence are of the press are really unlimited. But they can be misused as well. They are like double-edged swords. In the wrong hands, they may be used by vested interests and anti-social elements to further their own selfish ends at the cost of national and social interests. They may give distorted views and half-baked or false news. If confined in the hands of capitalists, they may be used to suppress and crush labour movements and anti-poverty campaigns as these pose a threat to their monopolistic ventures and business interests. In dictatorships, the press is not free and the newspapers are used only to promote the interests of a few, forming the nucleus around the dictator. Then they are not the voice of the people but the mouthpiece of the despotic ruler. It is only in a democracy that a newspaper is a common man’s representative, voice and counsellor, all rolled into one. As a friend, guide, counsellor, educator, representative and voice of the people, a newspaper has to be impartial, truthful, sincere and fearless. It has to be a guardian and watchdog of the interests of the people. To perform these duties and functions, the freedom of the press is a must. Newspapers should be free to criticize or encourage government policies and activities on merit. But freedom is meaningless without fairness. There should be no biased reporting, comments or expression of views. If they do not observe decency, fairness and impartiality and indulge in false, misleading and biased reporting, they can make themselves liable to penal action. In India, newspapers enjoy a fair amount of freedom of expression. It was only during the Emergency in 1975 that their freedom was curtailed for a short period, but then the people responsible for it had to pay very dearly. It is the duty of the reporters and journalists to be fair, impartial, honest and editors, constructive in their profession. It is only the yellow journalism that indulges in blackmail, extortion of money and concessions or such other benefits. A journalist, loyal to his profession, will not colour his reporting or exaggerate and distort his news. He will not betray the readers for personal gains, gifts and advantages. Yellow journalism is as great a danger to a nation and society as are the acts of smugglers, mafias, drug traffickers and people engaged in espionage against their own country. A journalist should never forget his mission of unbiased, frank, fearless and truthful reporting. An honest, fearless and frank newspaper is a perfect antidote for political corruption, irregularities, favouritism, nepotism, blackmail, etc., indulged in by the people in authority and power. The government and the people that run it cannot remain indifferent to criticism, comments and opinion expressed against them in the newspapers in a democracy. Sometimes the administration may try to tame a newspaper by threatening to stop advertisements to it because they are a must for the survival of a newspaper. But no newspaper, truly loyal to its commitment to the people and society, should succumb to such pressures. Rather, it should expose such conspiracy to suppress the freedom of the press.

Obviously, newspapers can play a vital role in the reconstruction and regeneration of a country. During our struggle for independence, the press played an important, constructive role. It reminds us of Tilak, Gandhi, Nehru and other leaders who published and edited newspapers and magazines or wrote articles, reviews, etc., for them. These played a very positive role in quickening the process of the national struggle for freedom. Their heroic, bold and missionary writings had the desired impact on the masses and, consequently, they got actively involved in the movement. Tilak was jailed and sent to Mandalay, in Burma (Myanmar), for his writings that were full of patriotic fervour and nationalism, but for the Britishers these were seditious. Similarly, Gandhiji and many other national leaders had to pay for their journalistic freedom, courage and honesty.

The history of Indian newspapers and journalism is quite old. Bengal Gazette was the first newspaper published in India in the middle of the 18th century. Raja Ram Mohan Roy published his newspaper Kaumudi and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Prabhakar. Indian newspapers include 41 centenarians. The Gujarati daily Bombay Sarnachar published from Mumbai is the oldest existing newspaper. It began its publication in 1822. Anand Bazar Patrika”, Punjab Kesari and the Times of India are the three biggest newspapers as far as circulation is concerned. By the end of the year 2000, there were as many as 49,145 newspapers, including dailies, tri/ bi-weeklies, weeklies and other periodicals. Uttar Pradesh ranks first, with 8,415 newspapers, including 844 dailies. The highest numbers of newspapers are published in Hindi followed by English, Urdu and Bengali. The circulation numbers of newspapers are gradually increasing appreciably with the spread of literacy and political and social awakening amidst the public. The number of newspapers owned and published by individuals is the largest. Their share in circulation is estimated at over 40%. This reflects the monopolistic position of certain individuals and business houses in the world of newspapers in India. Therefore, these people have certain advantages, but Indian journalism is now quite mature, responsible and free, which ensures that no group or business house can take liberty in the matter. Then there is the Press Council of India, established for the purpose of preserving the freedom of the press, maintaining and improving the standards and quality of newspapers, news agencies and journalism in the country. The Council is a quasi-judicial body and does not possess any punitive powers. However, it exercises a moral authority. It considers and decides complaints and grievances received both from the public against the newspaper and from the press. It may also direct an earring newspaper to publish the complainant’s reply/rejoinder, with an apology in appropriate cases. On the one hand, it helps newspapers and news agencies to maintain their independence, on the other, it ensures, the maintenance of high standards of public taste and fosters a sense of rights and responsibilities of citizenship. So it is freedom with responsibility.

Their pithy nature and bold type headlines give undue importance to certain news. The reader’s opinions are prejudiced by giving emotionally coloured words and disguised comments in the headlines. The busy or lazy reader does not go beyond the headlines, even the careful reader is satisfied with the first few paragraphs. The reader is not allowed to concentrate; short paragraphs and splitting up the item on different pages discourage it. The selection of the news also leads to the misguidance of the readers. The editor must conform to the newspaper policy and the tastes of the readers in selecting the news.

Study investigates the role of allies in advancing social movements

A new study sheds light on the crucial role of allies in social movements, showing how their participation can sway public opinion on protests. By positively influencing public perceptions and encouraging participation from both advantaged and disadvantaged groups, allies can play a significant role in addressing structural inequality. This research offers valuable insights for activists and policymakers aiming to foster positive change in society.

A new study led by Dr. Devorah Manekin from Hebrew University's Department of International Relations highlights how allies from advantaged groups can support social movements of disadvantaged groups. This research, focused on the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, shows how White allies positively influenced public opinion among both Black and White audiences. The work is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences .

Dr. Manekin and her team used surveys and social media analysis to understand the impact of allies. They discovered that among White respondents, allies increased public attention and support for the protests. Among Black audiences, allies were supported for their perceived strategic benefits, such as attracting attention to the movement and reducing the likelihood of heavy policing.

The study also found that, while protests led by ethnic minorities are often perceived as more violent and requiring more police, the presence of allies reduced these negative perceptions, making the protests feel safer for everyone.

Dr. Manekin said, "Our research shows how important allies can be in shaping public opinion and increasing support for social movements. While there are valid concerns about allies becoming overly prominent in the movement, our findings show that thoughtful allyship is perceived positively by the public and can thus be a powerful means of combating inequality."

These insights are valuable for activists, policymakers, and researchers, helping them understand and support social movements better.

PMNCH NGO Partners Unite at the UN Civil Society Conference

Championing women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health and well-being.

In a dynamic and collaborative gathering, over 20 PMNCH NGO partners from Amref Health Africa, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Physicians Across Continents, RIGHTS ASIA, Save the Children, SRHR Africa Trust, Women Deliver, Women in Global Health and others, convened in Nairobi during the UN Civil Society Conference. The session, led by Kathleen Sherwin, Chief Strategy and Engagement Officer of Plan International and PMNCH Board Member, provided an opportunity for partners to strategize on advocacy efforts ahead of the Summit of the Future. 

During the meeting, partners shared their engagement plans for the Nairobi Conference and the Summit of the Future by drawing on key priority messaging guided by the PMNCH resource, Key Asks to Member States for political outcome documents . Partners underscored the importance of ensuring data disaggregation to address disparities and highlighted the need to focus on intersectionality, considering multiple overlapping social identities, and increased domestic budget allocation for health and gender sectors. Localization emerged as a key priority, ensuring that local contexts and needs are prioritized in global policies. The meaningful engagement of adolescents and young people (MAYE) was deemed a critical need, calling for their active participation throughout the decision-making processes. 

Participants strongly emphasized safeguarding comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) commitments within the Pact for the Future by having robust strategies developed to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and facilitating Member States consensus building. The importance of ensuring civic space and civil society organization (CSO) engagement in the Pact for the Future was highlighted, along with the need for clear financial commitments and accountability mechanisms for all commitments was reiterated. 

Key recommendations emerging from the meeting included considerations for the creation of a health impact coalition, focusing on gender inclusion, and ensuring alignment on marginalized populations, including adolescents, in the Pact for the Future. The meeting was also a moment to reiterate the collective commitment of PMNCH partners to ensure the health and well-being of women, children, adolescents, and youth are prioritized in the negotiations. Moving ahead, these insights and strategies will play a vital role in shaping PMNCH's collaborative advocacy and influencing efforts ahead of the Summit of the Future and beyond.
