Chandrayaan 2 is an Indian lunar mission that was developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to explore the uncharted south pole of the celestial body – the Moon – by landing a rover. The Rover and the Lander were scheduled to land on the near side of the Moon, at the latitude of 70 degrees south, in the south polar region of the Moon on the September 6th, 2019. It was going to conduct scientific experiments for one lunar day, which approximately equals to two weeks on Earth.

However, the lander deviated from its intended trajectory and missed the primary scheduled landing position. The Vikram lander went for a second attempt, and that is when the visuals went missing. According to ISRO, communication from the lander Vikram was lost, and the data is still being analyzed.

Per a failure analysis report submitted to ISRO, a software glitch caused the crash. RoverIn the history of Indian Space Research Organization, Chandrayaan 2 was the most complex mission ever attempted by ISRO.

ISRO’s chairman K.Sivan, based on some findings of the official committee said that the mission was 98% successful. He was the man who earlier described the final descent as ’15 minutes of terror’.

K.Sivan’s remarks have met the criticism made by the scientist.hey said that it was too early to complete the mission a success for ISRO. This was mostly since the most crucial goal of the spacecraft was to land a rover on the lunar surface that can gather data essential – remains unrealized.

If the lander had landed successfully at the precisely targeted spot – between two large craters – the Rover would have rolled on the lunar surface and collect data and images to send back to the Erath for analysis. In its fourteen-day lifespan, it could travel 500m.

A successful landing on the Chandrayaan 2 on the Moon would have taken millions of dreams to space. The primary purpose of the mission was to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface. India, through Chandrayaan 2 would have been the first to have launched a mission to the Moon’s unexplored South Pole. ISRO may reattempt a landing with Chandrayaan 3 by the second quarter of 2021.

Success of Chandrayaan 2

According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the “Chandrayaan 2” mission was 95 % successful and it was not a complete success. The spacecraft entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory on 14th August 2019. On 20th August it successfully entered the Elliptical Orbit as well. It indicates that “Chandrayaan 2’s” lunar orbit insertion was successful.

The mission was considered a partial success because, in the final stage before the soft land, Vikarm Lander lost all communication with ISRO when it was just 2.1 km above the moon’s surface.

Chandrayaan 2 Mission Essay [UPSC Notes GS III]

Chandrayaan Mission was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was India’s first mission to the moon. The spacecraft was launched on 22nd October 2008 by a modified version of the PSLV C-11 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The vehicle was successfully inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008.

ISRO is planning mission Chandrayaan-3 in late 2021 or early 2022. India launched Chandrayaan-2, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota on 22nd July 2019.

What is Chandrayaan 1?

In 1999, the Indian Academy of Sciences initiated an idea of undertaking an Indian scientific mission to Moon. This initiative was followed by a discussion with the Astronautical Society of India in 2000. Based on the recommendations, a National Lunar Mission Task Force was constituted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) . Thereafter, India’s first lunar mission Chandrayaan – 1 was launched on 22nd October 2008 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Objectives of Chandrayaan 1:

  • To perform high-resolution remote sensing of the moon’s surface.
  • To provide a three-dimensional atlas of the Moon (near and far side).
  • To conduct chemical and mineralogical studies for mapping of the entire lunar surface.
  • To test the impact of a sub-satellite on the lunar surface for its future soft-landing missions.

The mission successfully detected the presence of titanium and calcium along with the accurate measurements of iron, aluminium and magnesium on the moon. The Chandrayaan Mission 1 ended on 28 August 2009 after the communications to the probe were suddenly lost. The probe lasted for 312 days. The estimated cost of this project cost was Rs.386 Crore or US$60 million.

Significance of Chandrayaan 2

In all the space missions, no country has ever attempted to land a spacecraft in the polar regions of the moon. This gave India a lead in space exploration on an international level.

  • Due to the moon’s axis, few regions on the South Pole always remains dark especially the craters and have higher chances of containing water.
  • The craters might have never received sunlight because it at very low angles in the Polar Regions and thus, increasing the chances of presence of ice on such surfaces.
  • The lunar surface area at the south pole of the Moon that remains in shadow is much larger than the North Pole thus making moon’s South Pole interesting. This also increases the probability of the existence of water in permanently shadowed areas around it.
  • The second de-orbiting manoeuvre for Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft was performed successfully today on September 04, 2019, beginning at 0342 hrs IST as planned, using the onboard propulsion system. The duration of the manoeuvre was 9 seconds.
  • On October 14, 2019, Chandrayaan-2 detected the presence of Argon-40 in the lunar exosphere.
  • On July 30th, 2020 Chandrayaan-2 imaged the Sarabhai Crater located on the north-east quadrant of the moon

Chandrayaan-2 Mission: Updates

  • The orbital insertion was achieved on 20th August 2019. The Orbiter has a life duration of 7 years and will continue its mission.
  • Vikram Lander had a mission life of 14 days. The landing on the moon’s surface was planned on 7th September 2019. However, the landing failed at the final stages. Vikram lander crash-landed on the moon’s surface as the velocity was higher than desired velocity (2 m/s) and the Failure Analysis Committee of ISRO concluded that a software glitch was the cause of the failure.
  • Pragyan Rover was planned for a duration of around 14 days. As the landing failed, the rover could not be deployed on the moon’s surface.

  • The Chandrayaan-2 data is required to be in the Planetary Data System-4 (PDS4) standard, and is required to be peer reviewed scientifically and technically before acceptance as PDS archives and declared ready for sharing with the global scientific community and the general public.

The Indian Research Space Organization is undoubtedly one of the world’s most technologically advanced space agencies. Even though its budget is just a fraction of what NASA gets, the space agency has proven that innovative technology can help you achieve the same objectives at a much lower cost.

ISRO’s Chandrayaan mission is one such example. Launched in October of 2008, this is India’s first mission to the moon. The launch of Chandrayaan 1 marked the start of India’s first-ever lunar program.

A Brief about Chandrayaan 1

Chandrayaan 1 was launched on 22 October 2008 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. It used the indigenously developed Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-XL) rocket. Chandrayaan 1 was based on an Indian meteorological satellite by the name of Kalpansat.

The spacecraft successfully entered the lunar orbit on 8 November 2008 and just six days later, released its Moon Impact Probe. The Moon Impact Probe crashed near the Shackleton crater on the same day. The Impact Probe crashed in such a way that the subsurface lunar soil could be analyzed for traces of ice.

It carried a total of 11 payloads not only from ISRO but from various space agencies, including NASA, the European Space Agency and the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency.

Hovering just 100 kms above the Moon’s surface, Chandrayaan 1 took numerous high-resolution images of the Moon’s topography. It also performed mineralogical mapping and scoured the surface for any radioactive elements.

One of the mission’s major achievements was the discovery of a large number of water molecules present in the Moon’s soil. The mission cost a mere $56 million and gave us crucial information about the Moon’s surface.

Chandrayaan 1 – Success or failure?

Scientists speculate that frozen water near the Moon’s south pole can be used for a variety of purposes such as generation of rocket fuel, drinking purpose, oxygen generation and to grow plants.

In August 2009, Chandrayaan 1 lost contact with the ground station when it was hovering 200 km above the Moon’s surface. After a while, ISRO officially declared that the mission was over.

Though the probe was expected to last two years, numerous technical issues such as failure of the star sensors and inadequate thermal shielding shortened the lifespan of the spacecraft to just 312 days.

However, 95% of the mission objectives were already achieved. The project was a huge step forward not only for ISRO but also for the world. It paved the way for future lunar explorations.

Following the success of Chandrayaan 1, the way for Chandrayaan 2 was cleared.

Chandrayaan 2

Chandrayaan 2 was launched on July 22 from the same launch pad from which Chandrayaan 1 had taken off. Instead of using the outdated PSLV rocket used earlier, the spacecraft made use of the advanced Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III).

The spacecraft is expected to land on the Moon’s on September 7, 2019. According to NASA, the Moon’s polar craters have the Solar System’s lowest temperature. It will be the first probe in the world which will land on the lunar south pole. The main mission objective is the exploration of lunar water near the polar region.

Also, ISRO plans to test the capabilities of its lunar rover named Pragyan. Weighing 27kg, the rover operates on solar power and travels at a speed of 1cm per second. It will continuously perform chemical analysis of the soil and send back to the lander (named Vikram), which will update the ground station.

It is expected that the rover will operate for 14 days but the duration may vary since Pragyan uses solar power to keep itself up.

Unlike last time, ISRO declined to carry any foreign payloads due to weight restrictions. But in June 2019, it agreed to carry a small laser retroreflector from NASA. The orbiter will carry eight payloads, while the lander is carrying three and the rover just two.

However, the orbiter will be hovering over the moon at a distance of 100km and performing passive experiments just like it did on Chandrayaan 1.

Chandrayaan 2 has successfully entered space. That being said, the most critical part will be the auto soft-landing. If the spacecraft lands successfully on the Moon, India will be the fourth country to join the moon club after China, the United States and Russia.

The entire Chandrayaan 2 mission cost approximately $141 million. This is less than every instalment in the Marvel Avenger series.

Unlike Chandrayaan 1, the stakes are pretty high this time since the spacecraft is also carrying a lunar rover, orbiter and a lander. Moreover, Chandrayaan 2 is the country’s first time using self-manufactured components and design vehicles.

The launch is significant for a number of reasons, including the fact that, for the first time in Indian history, a space mission is spearheaded by two women. Chandrayaan-2 is led by Muthayya Vanitha and Ritu Karidhal, the project director and mission director, respectively.

India’s Space Technology at the Global level

Even if the mission ends up in failure, ISRO will have a lot to learn from its experiences, motivating it to do better in the future. India is the only country in the world which successfully completed its maiden interplanetary mission to Mars.

Mangalyaan was launched in 2013 and has completed almost four years in Mars’ orbit. This was a proud moment in the history of the organization since no other space agency has been able to achieve this feat.

It also holds the world record for launching the most satellites in a single mission. Even though ISRO lacks the resources and money compared to what NASA gets, it is continually proving its dominance in the world with its innovative cost-effective solutions.

Currently, with a budget of $1.2 billion, ISRO is ranked at number 5 in the world while having almost a fraction of the budget when compared to other space agencies.

Orbiter, lander and rover of Chandrayaan 2

The orbiter will orbit around the moon at a distance of 100 km. It has been sent with 5 payloads. Three of them are new while the other 2 are the ones that had been sent with Chandrayaan 1. At launch, the orbiter weighed 1400 kgs. The life span of the orbiter is 1 year.

The lander of Chandrayaan 2 has been named after Indian Space scientist Dr Vikram Sarabhai. It has been designed to work for one lunar day i.e about 14 earth days. Vikram can communicate with the orbiter, rover and the space center too.

The rover of Chandrayaan 2 weighs 27 kg and works with solar energy. It has been named ‘pragyaan’ which is the Sanskrit word for knowledge. It is a robot vehicle with 6 wheels and can travel upto 500 metres. It can communicate with the lander only. Its aim is to explore the surface of the moon, take samples of the soil and surface, do analysis and send data to the orbiter which will then relay it to the earth.

Success of Chandrayaan 2

The mission has achieved a 95% success with the placement of the orbiter in the moon’s orbit. It will take images of the moon for one year and send the data to earth.

On 7 September 2019, the lander, Vikram tried to make a soft landing on the moon but when it was 2 kms away from the surface, the ISRO lost contant with Vikram. Many efforts have been made to restore communication but the efforts have not been fruitful. The rover has not been able to come out of the lander and thus, it can not gather important information related to the Moon. Due to this, the data that was supposed to be collected by Vikram and pragyaan cannot be collected.

The Indian Academy of Sciences in 1999 suggested that an Indian scientific mission to the moon be undertaken. In 2000, the Indian Astronautical Society held a meeting to discuss this idea. Based on these recommendations, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) established a National Lunar Mission Task Force. India’s first moon mission, Chandrayaan – 1, launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, on 22 October 2008.

Objectives of Chandrayaan

  • Remote sensing at a high resolution of the moon’s surface.
  • Provide a three-dimensional Atlas of the Moon (near, far)
  • To perform chemical and mineral studies to map the entire lunar surface.
  • To determine the impact of a subsatellite upon the lunar surface in preparation for future soft-landing missions.

The mission detected titanium and calcium’s presence and measured iron, aluminum, and magnesium on the moon. After communications with the probe suddenly went down, the Chandrayaan Mission 1 was terminated on 28 August 2009. The search lasted 312 days. This project was estimated to cost Rs. 386 crores or US$60 million.

Chandrayaan 2 was the second lunar exploration mission, following Chandrayaan 1. The Indian Space Research Organization developed it. Chandrayaan 2, a complex task, represents a technological leap in comparison to ISRO’s primary mission. Chandrayaan 2’s primary goal was to demonstrate soft-landing on the lunar surface and the ability to operate a robot rover on that surface.

Chandrayaan 2, an Indian lunar mission, was created by the Indian Space Research Organization. ISRO launched it to explore the south pole of the celestial body, the moon. The Chandrayaan 2 lunar mission includes the lunar orbiter, ‘Vikram,’ and the lunar Rover (‘Pragyan’). These were all developed in India by ISRO experts.

Chandrayaan 2 aims to enhance our understanding of the celestial bodies, stimulate technological advancement, promote global alliances, and inspire a new generation of scientists and explorers; It is called Chandrayaan 2. India would be the fourth country to soft-land on the lunar surface if it successfully landed on Chandrayaan 2.

The Satish Dhawan Space Center, Andhra Pradesh, was the second launch pad.

It launched the spacecraft on July 22nd, 2019, on its mission to reach the moon. It was established by a GSLV Mark III M1 rocket. The craft reached the moon’s orbit and was successfully landed on August 20, 2019. Maneuvers to position the lander “Vikram” began.

The Lander and the Rover were to land on September 6th, 2019, at 70 degrees south latitude, in the moon’s south polar region. It would conduct scientific experiments for one lunar day, roughly equivalent to two weeks on Earth.

The lander veered off its planned trajectory and landed in an area not designated for it. The Vikram lander attempted a second landing attempt. However, the visuals disappeared. ISRO claims that communication with Vikram, the lander, was lost. Data is still being analyzed.

Based on the searches of an official committee, ISRO’s chairman K.Sivan stated that 98% of the mission had been successful. He was the one who described the final descent earlier as “15 minutes of terror”.

Scientists have criticized K.Sivan’s comments. He stated that it was too soon to make the mission successful at ISRO. It was partly because the main goal of the spacecraft was landing a rover on the lunar surface to collect data. However, this remains unrealized.

If the lander had successfully landed at the exact spot between two large craters, the Rover would have rolled onto the lunar surface to collect data to send back to Earth. It could travel 500m in its 14-day lifetime.

Millions of people would have dreamed of seeing the moon if the Chandrayaan 2 landing on the moon was a success. The mission’s primary goal was to land on the lunar surface softly. India would have been the first to launch a mission to the Moon’s South Pole via Chandrayaan 2. ISRO could attempt a landing with Chandrayaan 3, possibly in the second quarter of 2021.

Chandrayaan 2 successfully entered space. The auto soft-landing will be the most crucial part. India, China, Russia, and the United States will join the Moon club if the spacecraft successfully lands on the moon.

The cost of Chandrayaan 2 was approximately $141 million. It is lower than any Marvel Avenger installment.

The Chandrayaan-2 Mission has launched on 22 July 2019 at 2:43 PM IST by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) on its course to the Moon from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Center. The craft reached lunar orbit on 20 August 2019 and began orbital positioning maneuvers for the landing of Vikram Lander.

Vikram and the rover were scheduled to land on the near side of the Moon in the south polar region at approximately 1:50 AM on 7 September 2019 at a latitude of about 70° south and conduct scientific experiments for one lunar day.

However, the lander deviated from its intended trajectory starting at 2.1 kilometers (1.3 mi) altitude, and communication was lost when touchdown confirmation was expected. ISRO chairman K. Sivan has confirmed initial reports suggesting an accident, stating that the location of the lander had been found, and that “it must have been a hard landing”.

Component of Chandrayaan 2 Mission

If the Chandrayaan-2 mission had successfully landed on the moon, India would have become the fourth nation in the world to do a soft landing on the moon, but this does not mean that this mission was unsuccessful. According to ISRO, Chandrayaan-2 has done 95% of its work. Technically, Chandrayaan-2 was divided into three parts, the description of all three parts are given below:

Lunar Obiter

The orbiter weighing 2379 kg will orbit the moon for one year. It has eight payloads, which will carry out different experiments. This orbiter will be able to communicate with the Indian Deep Space Network based in Bangalore. Apart from this, it will also be in contact with the lander. This orbiter is capable of generating a thousand watts of electricity from the sun’s rays. It will do the work of sending information to the earth.

Vikram Lander

The Vikram lander had to separate from the orbiter and descend into a low lunar orbit of 30 km x 100 km using its main engines. It was to then perform a  comprehensive check of all its onboard systems before attempting a soft landing that would have deployed the rover and enabled it to perform scientific activities for approximately 14 Earth days. It had the capability to communicate with Earth as well as with the orbiter & rover.

It had all the equipment to select a suitable landing site and slow down its speed to enable a soft landing. However, this failed to slow down the Pragyaan rover sufficiently to enable it to complete its task of exploring the lunar surface. The lander had a power generation capacity of 650 watts and a weight of 1471 kg, including a rover weighing 27 kg.

Pragyan Lunar Rover

The name Rover Pragyan is derived from Sanskrit, which means knowledge. Weighing 27 kg, this rover has two payloads. It is a robotic vehicle with six wheels. Through the payloads engaged in Lander Vikram and Rover Pragyan, the surface of the Moon was to study thermal physics, earthquakes, element composition of the soil, etc., but due to the loss of contact with Lander Vikram, the situation is still not clear in this context.

The objective of the Chandrayaan-2 Mission

The primary objective of the Chandrayaan-2 lander was to demonstrate the ability to soft-land on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover on the surface. The Chandrayaan-2 Mission was launched aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) with an estimated lift-off mass of 3,850 kg (8,490 lb) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center on Sriharikota Island. As of June 2019, the allocated cost of the mission is ₹978 crore which includes ₹603 crore for the space segment and ₹375 crore as launch cost on GSLV Mk III. The Chandrayaan-2 stack was initially placed in an Earth parking orbit of 170 km perigee and 40,400 km apogee by the launch vehicle.

Present Status of Chandrayaan-2 Mission

The orbiter is successfully orbiting the Moon in its designated orbit. It is continuously transmitting data in the form of images to ISRO ground stations through various onboard sensors and cameras. On July 30, 2020, the Terrain Mapping Camera captures the Sarabhai Crater on the Moon’s northeast quadrant.

Essay on Chandrayaan 2 in English

Chandrayaan-2 or Second Chandrayaan is India’s second lunar exploration mission after Chandrayaan-1, developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The expedition includes a lunar orbiter, a rover and a lander built in India. 

All these have been developed by ISRO. Chandrayaan 2 was launched on July 22 from the same launch pad from where Chandrayaan 1 took off. Instead of using the previously used older PSLV rocket , the spacecraft used the Advanced Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III). 

Unlike last time, ISRO refused to carry any foreign payload due to weight restrictions. But in June 2019 , it agreed to carry a small laser retroflector from NASA .

However, the orbiter will hover over the moon at a distance of 100 km and perform passive experiments as it did on Chandrayaan 1. The entire Chandrayaan 2 mission costs approximately $ 141 million . 

Unlike Chandrayaan 1, this time the hopes were quite high as the spacecraft is also carried a lunar rover , orbiter, and lander . In addition, Chandrayaan 2 is the country’s first opportunity to use self-built components and design vehicles. 

However, at about 1:52 am IST, the lander deviated from its intended path about 2.1 km from the landing and ground control with the spacecraft lost communication. On 8 September 2019, it was reported by ISRO that Vikram Lander has been detected from the heat painting taken by the orbiter. But Vikram Lander has not been contacted yet.

Main information of orbiter, lander, and rover

Chandrayaan 2 orbiter

The orbiter will orbit the moon at an altitude of 100 km. In this campaign, it has been decided to send the orbiter with five payloads. Three payloads are new, while two others are improved versions of payloads which were sent on the Chandrayaan-1 orbiter. 

Its weight at the time of flight was about 1400 kg.  The Orbiter High Resolution Camera will give high-resolution pictures of the landing site before the lander separates from the orbiter. The mission life of the orbiter is one year and is placed in a 100 X 100 km long lunar polar orbit.

Chandrayaan 2 Vikram lander

Chandrayaan 2’s lander is named after Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai , the father of the Indian space program. It is designed to function for one lunar day, which is equivalent to about 14 Earth days.  Vikram lander has the ability to communicate with IDSN as well as orbiter and rover at Bayalu near Bangalore. 

But due to loss of contact with the lander, the task of the lander (Vikram) and rover (Pragyan) seems impossible.

Chandrayaan 2  rover

The rover weighs 27 kg and will be powered by solar power Electric power generation capacity – 50 W. Chandrayaan 2’s rover is a 6-wheeled robotic vehicle named Pragyan, which translates to ‘knowledge’ in Sanskrit. It can travel up to 500 meters (½km) and make use of solar power for its functioning. 

It can only communicate with the lander. The rover will move on the surface of the moon with wheels, collect samples of soil and rocks, chemically analyze them and send the data up to the orbiter from where it will be sent to the earth station.

However, the rover has not come out of the lander due to lack of contact with the lander and if the lander is not in contact, then the rover will not be able to do its job and the information related to the moon will not reach us.

ISRO had planned to launch Chandrayaan-2 at 2:51 AM in the early hours of 15 July 2019 in Indian time, which was canceled due to some technical glitch, so its time was changed to 22 July 02:43 PM Due to this, this vehicle was successfully launched at the scheduled time. 

Vikram Lander has currently lost contact with ISRO at 02:00 pm on 07 September 2019 at 2.1 km above the lunar plane. Lander is being contacted again. President of the Indian Space Research Center (ISRO), K Sivan said, “The Vikram lander landed in a normal way to an altitude of 2.1 km above the lunar surface. After this, the lander lost contact with the earth. The data is being analyzed. In September, ISRO Chairperson, Dr. K. Sivan announced that the lander was viewed with the help of a thermal image of the orbiter on the lunar surface,

Chandrayaan 1 was India’s first spacecraft to travel to the moon under the lunar exploration program of the Indian Space Research Organization. Although the name of this vehicle was only Chandrayaan, the name of the next vehicle in this series was Chandrayaan-2, this campaign started to be called Chandrayaan-1. 

Chandrayaan 1 was launched on 22 October 2008 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, Sriharikota and remained active till 30 October 2009 . It used an indigenously developed Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-XL) rocket . 

Chandrayaan 1 was based on an Indian meteorological satellite called Kalpasat . It took 5 days to reach the moon but it took 15 days to set up in the moon’s orbit.

The spacecraft successfully entered lunar orbit on 8 November 2008 and released its lunar impact test just six days after that. The purpose of the Chandrayaan was to find detailed maps of the lunar surface and traces of water and helium. 

Its tenure was to be around 2 years , but it was closed earlier due to loss of contact with the control room. With Chandrayaan, India became the sixth country to send satellite on the moon. 

This venture opened the way for sending manned aircraft to the moon and Mars.  Cruising just 100 kilometers above the lunar surface, Chandrayaan 1 took several high-resolution images of the moon’s topography. It also performed mineralogical mapping and scoured the surface for any radioactive elements.

One of the major achievements of the mission was the discovery of a large number of water molecules present in the soil of the moon. This mission cost only $ 56 million and gave us important information about the lunar surface.

  • Mineral and chemical imaging of the north-polar and south-polar regions permanently under the shadow. 
  • Look for surface or subsurface lunar water-ice, especially at lunar poles.  Identification of chemicals in rocks.

Achievement of the Century by Chandrayaan 1

The Indian Space Research Organization [ISRO] claimed that water on the moon is an exploration of India. The presence of water on the moon was detected by India’s own Moon Impact Probe [MIP] on Chandrayaan-1. 

US Space Agency NASA equipment has also confirmed water on the moon. Chandrayaan-1 has made an important discovery of this century by finding the presence of water on the moon. According to ISRO, water on the moon is not present in the form of seas, waterfalls, ponds or drops, but on the surface of minerals and rocks. The presence of water on the Moon is much higher than earlier estimates.

The craft successfully reached and was landed into the Moon’s orbit on the August 20th, 2019 ad began positioning manoeuvres for the landing of the lander ‘Vikram’.

The Rover and the Lander were scheduled to land on the near side of the Moon, at the latitude of 70 degrees south, in the south polar region of the Moon on the September 6th, 2019. It was going to conduct scientific experiments for one lunar day, which approximately equals to two weeks on Earth.

However, the lander deviated from its intended trajectory and missed the primary scheduled landing position. The Vikram lander went for a second attempt, and that is when the visuals went missing. According to ISRO, communication from the lander Vikram was lost, and the data is still being analyzed.

Per a failure analysis report submitted to ISRO, a software glitch caused the crash. RoverIn the history of Indian Space Research Organization, Chandrayaan 2 was the most complex mission ever attempted by ISRO.

ISRO’s chairman K.Sivan, based on some findings of the official committee said that the mission was 98% successful. He was the man who earlier described the final descent as ’15 minutes of terror’.

K.Sivan’s remarks have met the criticism made by the scientist.hey said that it was too early to complete the mission a success for ISRO. This was mostly since the most crucial goal of the spacecraft was to land a rover on the lunar surface that can gather data essential – remains unrealized.

If the lander had landed successfully at the precisely targeted spot – between two large craters – the Rover would have rolled on the lunar surface and collect data and images to send back to the Erath for analysis. In its fourteen-day lifespan, it could travel 500m.

A successful landing on the Chandrayaan 2 on the Moon would have taken millions of dreams to space. The primary purpose of the mission was to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface. India, through Chandrayaan 2 would have been the first to have launched a mission to the Moon’s unexplored South Pole. ISRO may reattempt a landing with Chandrayaan 3 by the second quarter of 2021.

Chandrayaan 2 aims at enhancing our understanding of the celestial body, stimulate the advancement of technology, promote worldwide alliance, and inspire a future generation of scientists and explorers. A successful landing on the Chandrayaan 2 would have made India the fourth country after Russia, the USA and China to have achieved soft-landing on the lunar surface.

The spacecraft was launched from the second launch pad in India at the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Andhra Pradesh, on its mission to the Moon on July 22nd, 2019. A GSLV Mark III M1 launched it. The craft successfully reached and was landed into the Moon’s orbit on the August 20th, 2019 ad began positioning manoeuvres for the landing of the lander ‘Vikram’.

The Rover and the Lander were scheduled to land on the near side of the Moon, at the latitude of 70 degrees south, in the south polar region of the Moon on the September 6th, 2019. It was going to conduct scientific experiments for one lunar day, which approximately equals to two weeks on Earth.

However, the lander deviated from its intended trajectory and missed the primary scheduled landing position. The Vikram lander went for a second attempt, and that is when the visuals went missing. According to ISRO, communication from the lander Vikram was lost, and the data is still being analyzed.

Per a failure analysis report submitted to ISRO, a software glitch caused the crash. RoverIn the history of Indian Space Research Organization, Chandrayaan 2 was the most complex mission ever attempted by ISRO.

ISRO’s chairman K.Sivan, based on some findings of the official committee said that the mission was 98% successful. He was the man who earlier described the final descent as ’15 minutes of terror’.

K.Sivan’s remarks have met the criticism made by the scientist.hey said that it was too early to complete the mission a success for ISRO. This was mostly since the most crucial goal of the spacecraft was to land a rover on the lunar surface that can gather data essential – remains unrealized.

If the lander had landed successfully at the precisely targeted spot – between two large craters – the Rover would have rolled on the lunar surface and collect data and images to send back to the Erath for analysis. In its fourteen-day lifespan, it could travel 500m.

ISRO had selected eight scientific instruments for the orbiter, two for Rover, and four for a lander. 10. The mission was the most complex expedition by ISRO.
