In the UK, a two page CV is expected as standard when applying for a job. Finance and banking applications require a one page CV along with some other sectors if requested. You must demonstrate how your relevant strengths suit the key needs of the company and position. Roughly, less than a 70% match will often result in a decline. The power of Human Resource (HR) personnel To improve hiring decisions and to ensure fairness, HR seek clear evidence from cover letters, application forms and CVs before they progress you to the interview stage. The degree of seriousness and the rigidity of the HR process in the UK and USA is often very different from the experience found in top companies in other countries. Limited feedback There is a very high ratio of applicants to HR staff; in addition a lot of the sifting process is done by automation. It is very rare to receive feedback on why you were declined at the first round stage and often there is limited feedback thereafter. Currently, the average time for employers to get a candidate in a job in the UK, across all job levels, is three months and for more senior positions it can take longer. This contrasts with other high-growth economies such as India where closing a job within two weeks is commonplace. There is a need for both resilience and persistence in overcoming the anxiety and methodical nature of the process. ‘We regret to inform you...’ Companies in the UK and USA often struggle to find candidates that stand out from a crowd of well educated graduates, not to mention internal candidates. With thousands of well qualified candidates for each position, there will be a high volume of ‘No, thank you’ responses. FACT FOCUS: A look at false claims around Kamala Harris and her campaign for the White House

Democrats are quickly rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris as their likely presidential nominee after President Joe Biden’s ground-shaking decision to bow out of the 2024 race.

The announcement that Vice President Kamala Harris will seek the Democratic nomination for president is inspiring a wave of false claims about her eligibility and her background. Some first emerged years ago, while others only surfaced after President Joe Biden’s decision to end his bid for a second term.

Here’s a look at the facts.

CLAIM: Harris is not an American citizen and therefore cannot serve as commander in chief.

THE FACTS: Completely false . Harris is a natural born U.S. citizen. She was born on Oct. 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, according to a copy of her birth certificate, obtained by The Associated Press.

Her mother, a cancer researcher from India, and her father, an economist from Jamaica, met as graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley.

Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, anyone born on U.S. soil is considered a natural born U.S. citizen and eligible to serve as either the vice president or president.

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,” reads the amendment.

There is no question or legitimate debate about whether a citizen like Harris is eligible to serve as president or vice president, said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School.

“So many legal questions are really nuanced — this isn’t one of those situations,” Levinson told the AP on Monday.

Still, social media posts making the debunked assertion that Harris cannot serve as president went viral soon after Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race and would back Harris for president.

“Kamala Harris is not eligible to run for President,” read one post on X that was liked more than 34,000 times. “Neither of her parents were natural born American citizens when she was born.”

False assertions about Harris’ eligibility began circulating in 2019 when she launched her bid for the presidency. They got a boost, thanks in part to then-President Donald Trump, when Biden selected her as his running mate.

“I heard today that she doesn’t meet the requirements,” the Republican said of Harris in 2019.

CLAIM: Harris is not Black.

THE FACTS: This is false. Harris is Black and Indian . Her father, Donald Harris, is a Black man who was born in Jamaica. Shyamala Gopalan, her mother, was born in southern India. Harris has spoken publicly for many years, including in her 2019 autobiography , about how she identifies with the heritage of both her parents.

Despite ample evidence to the contrary, social media users are making erroneous claims about Harris’ race.

“Just a reminder that Kamala Harris @KamalaHarris isn’t black,” reads one X post that had received approximately 42,000 likes and 20,400 shares as of Monday. “She Indian American. She pretends to be black as part of the delusional, Democrat DEI quota.”

But Harris is both Black and Indian. Indeed, she is the first woman, Black person and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. This fact is highlighted in her biography on WhiteHouse.gov and she has spoken about her ethnicity on many occasions.

Harris wrote in her autobiography, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” that she identifies with the heritage of both her mother and father.

“My mother, grandparents, aunts, and uncle instilled us with pride in our South Asian roots,” she wrote. “Our classical Indian names harked back to our heritage, and we were raised with a strong awareness and appreciation for Indian culture.”

In the next paragraph, she adds, “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters.” Harris again refers to herself as a “black woman” in the book’s next chapter.

CLAIM: Harris got her start by having an affair with a married man, California politician Willie Brown.

THE FACTS: This is missing some important context. Brown was separated from his wife during the relationship, which was not a secret.

Brown, 90, is a former mayor of San Francisco who was serving as speaker of the California State Assembly in the 1990s when he and Harris were in a relationship. Brown had separated from his wife in 1982.

“Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago,” Brown wrote in 2020 in the San Francisco Chronicle under the article title, “Sure, I dated Kamala Harris. So what?”

He wrote that he supported Harris’ first race to be San Francisco district attorney — just as he has supported a long list of other California politicians, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Harris, 59, was state attorney general from 2011-2017 and served in the Senate from 2017 until 2021, when she became vice president. She has been married to Doug Emhoff since 2014.

Harris’ critics have used the past relationship to question her qualifications, as Fox News personality Tomi Lahren did when she wrote on social media in 2019: “Kamala did you fight for ideals or did you sleep your way to the top with Willie Brown.” Lahren later apologized for the comment.

Trump and some of his supporters have also highlighted the nearly three-decade old relationship in recent attacks on Harris .

CLAIM: An Inside Edition clip of television host Montel Williams holding hands with Harris and another woman is proof that Harris was his “side piece.”

THE FACTS: The clip shows Montel with Harris and his daughter, Ashley Williams. Harris and Williams, a former marine who hosted “The Montel Williams Show” for more than a decade, dated briefly in the early 2000s.

In the clip, taken from a 2019 Inside Edition segment , Williams can be seen posing for photographs and holding hands with both women as they arrive at the 2001 Eighth Annual Race to Erase MS in Los Angeles.

But social media users are misrepresenting the clip, using it as alleged evidence that Harris was Montel’s “side piece” — a term used to describe a person, typically a woman, who has a sexual relationship with a man in a monogamous relationship.

Williams addressed the false claims in an X post on Monday, writing in reference to the Inside Edition clip, “as most of you know, that is my daughter to my right.” Getty Images photos from the Los Angeles gala identify the women as Harris and Ashley Williams.

In 2019, Williams described his relationship with Harris in a post on X, then known as Twitter.

“@KamalaHarris and I briefly dated about 20 years ago when we were both single,” he wrote in an X post at the time. “So what? I have great respect for Sen. Harris. I have to wonder if the same stories about her dating history would have been written if she were a male candidate?”

CLAIM: Harris promised to inflict the “vengeance of a nation” on Trump supporters.

THE FACTS: A fabricated quote attributed to Harris is spreading online five years after it first surfaced.

In the quote, Harris supposedly promises that if Trump is defeated in 2020, Trump supporters will be targeted by the federal government: “Once Trump’s gone and we have regained our rightful place in the White House, look out if you supported him and endorsed his actions, because we’ll be coming for you next. You will feel the vengeance of a nation.”

The quote was shared again on social media this week. One post on X containing an image of the quote was shared more than 22,000 times as of Monday afternoon.

The remarks didn’t come from Harris , but from a satirical article published online in August 2019. Shortly after, Trump supporters like musician Ted Nugent reposted the comments without noting they were fake.

CLAIM: A video shows Harris saying in a speech: “Today is today. And yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So live today, so the future today will be as the past today as it is tomorrow.”

THE FACTS: Harris never said this. Footage from a 2023 rally on reproductive rights at Howard University, her alma mater, was altered to make it seem as though she did.

In the days after Harris headlined the Washington rally, Republicans mocked a real clip of her speech, with one critic dubbing her remarks a “word salad,” the AP reported at the time .

Harris says in the clip: “So I think it’s very important — as you have heard from so many incredible leaders — for us, at every moment in time, and certainly this one, to see the moment in time in which we exist and are present, and to be able to contextualize it, to understand where we exist in the history and in the moment as it relates not only to the past, but the future.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America, an abortion rights nonprofit whose president also spoke at the rally, livestreamed the original footage. It shows Harris making the “moment in time” remark, but not the “today is today” comment.

The White House’s transcript of Harris’ remarks also does not include the statement from the altered video. Harris’ appearance at the event came the same day that Biden announced their reelection bid .

Student union, clubs and societies.

The Cranfield Student Association ( CSA ) is run by a team of elected students who work at ensuring that all students are represented and supported during their time learning, as well as to promote student welfare, and organise social, cultural and sporting activities. The CSA is supported by a small team of university staff, who work collaboratively with the student officers and student membership to ensure all the most important support and services are readily available.

Some of the events and activities held at Cranfield throughout the year include theme nights, bowling excursions, volunteering initiatives, and the Cranstock music festival which is organised by full-time MBA students. There is a wealth of opportunities to meet new people and get involved in a wide range of clubs and societies run by student volunteers, such as the Basketball Club, Astronomical Society, and Musicians Society. Students can try something new or develop their interests with like-minded individuals, many of whom become lifelong friends.

Students attending both campuses have the opportunity to get involved with the many clubs and societies which are co-ordinated by the CSA.

There are more than 25 societies to choose from, which are a great way for students to meet new people from outside of their course while at the same time learning new skills to add to their CVs. Societies range from sports clubs such as football, tennis and volleyball, to interest groups like the musician’s society and the walking society.

Sports teams benefit from the use of Cranfield’s excellent facilities which include grassed, multi-use playing field features full-size football, rugby and cricket pitches, two floodlit, fully fenced, five-a-side pitches with synthetic artificial turf and a state-of-the-art exercise and fitness centre.

Students can also set up their own club where it is not already offered, and may receive organisational support from the CSA.

The Cranfield campus is a self-contained learning and living environment, located within a 40 minute train journey from central London. Neighbouring towns of Milton Keynes and Bedford place Cranfield at the intersection of two very different and interesting worlds. Milton Keynes is a truly modern city, with nearby Bedford being a historic market town. Both are within a few miles of campus, and readily accessible by car, or by public transport. The closest international airport is London Luton, while Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted are all easily accessible by train or coach.

Aerospace Integration Research Centre (AIRC) - A purpose-built facility housing a large-scale test bed for aircraft and engine systems and an advanced manufacturing workshop.

Energy Materials Laboratory - The EML's facilities enable the evaluation of the corrosion performance of metallic and ceramic materials in a range of environments.

Through-life Engineering Services (TES) Centre - The TES centre develops through-life technologies and strategies, funded by industry partners, including Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, and Network Rail.

Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre (DARTeC) - Launched in 2019 as a collaborative effort with Boeing, Thales, and Saab, DARTeC’s facilities include a digital control tower, 3D printing laboratory, and a virtual reality centre.

The university also provides multiple food and drinks vendors and student bars on both sites. The Cranfield campus features a sports and fitness centre, while the Shrivenham campus boasts a heated swimming pool, riding stables and a golf course.

Cranfield recognises that completing a postgraduate qualification can present a number of challenges, particularly for those who are moving to a new town, city, or even country to live and study. Scholarships for students enrolling on a full-time master’s at the university are available to students who have been recognised for academic success, allowing for them to continue their studies as postgraduates.

There are over 100 different scholarships and bursaries available for students. These include:

Santander Scholarship (female all Masters)

Awarded to female students from the UK who will be commencing a full-time master's course

NetZero (Energy)

This full-fee scholarship is designed to start students on their journey to making a global level contribution to net zero goals.

Forensics Excellence Bursary

Five scholarships are available to attract the most talented postgraduate students to study a world-leading Forensic MSc degree. Each scholarship awards a full tuition fee waiver to cover the course fee.

Water Excellence Bursary

15 full-fee scholarships across MSc courses in Water & Wastewater Engineering, Water & Sanitation for Development and Advanced Water Management

SoM Bursary

All successful UK and EU applicants for a full-time School of Management master’s courses, starting in September 2023, will be offered a scholarship to cover 20% of their course tuition fee.

All taught courses at Cranfield follow a similar structure to an undergraduate degree, with the added benefit of an excellent student-to-staff ratio, which results in far more individual attention than is typical at undergraduate level. Students benefit from studying in small groups with a dedicated faculty, and some of the most innovative teaching methods and latest technologies at their fingertips.

Students will undertake various modules aimed at helping them to develop the skills and experience needed to secure employment in their field of study, and will undertake individual projects as well as group work, exams and essays. Students can learn on a full or part-time basis, with some of the programmes offering flexible starting dates.

Students undertaking a research degree have the opportunity to spend time focusing solely on one subject area, with their findings being written up as a thesis at the conclusion of their studies. Cranfield offers the chance to work on live research projects commissioned by world-leading business and professional organisations. During their time learning, students have access to research facilities including the £35million Aerospace Integration Research Centre. All students will be assigned a supervisor with vast experience in their field of work.

Cranfield university customizes csm to provide support.

The employability journey is no longer linear and there are many components to the journey that students take. COVID-19 has added extra complexities to students’ employability journeys as well, especially in the regions where shelter-in-place orders have been disrupting several industries. According to Glassdoor , “60% of companies reduced their job listings and nearly 25% have closed their postings altogether in the past month.” Despite the hiring freezes, career services offices worldwide are working hard by “hosting virtual networking, events, talking students through hurdles they’re facing on the job hunt and helping them craft contingency plans in the event that their offers are rescinded due to the pandemic.” With the economic impact of COVID-19, career services offices are trying to anticipate the needs of their students.

Some universities with an online career services platform already in place are finding that their resources are being accessed more now in the midst of COVID-19. Cranfield University’s Career Development Services team uses Pathways, a workflow module within Symplicity CSM , to provide students with a resource library. “It functions like an FAQ for students,” said Penny Pickering, Head of Careers at Cranfield University, “By using Pathways, we allow for resources to be linked by topic. For example, if a student wanted to see all of the resources available for writing a cover letter, they can click on that topic to read through the cover letter learning pack or watch a video about putting together a cover letter.” Cranfield University has been using Pathways as a way of organizing resources by topic and keeping them all in one place. It has made it easier for their students to have full visibility into the resources that are available to them.

Students at Cranfield University have especially found this beneficial since their campus closed. With Pathways, students not only have 24/7 access to employability resources, but they can also find opportunities that are tailored to each student and the roles that interest them the most. Another way that Cranfield University is serving their students remotely is with the live chat feature. Pickering noted that “Pathways allows students to get their questions answered no matter where they are in the world. We’re aware that students are being overwhelmed with COVID-19 information which is why we’ve configured our platform to deliver exactly the information students need right now.” Pathways ensures that students are viewing the most relevant information to them without being overwhelmed.

The customization that comes with Symplicity CSM, in particular, is what has been helping Cranfield University overcome the challenges of COVID-19. “We’re unique in that we’re the only wholly post-graduate university in the UK so to be able to configure CSM to the level that we have has been incredibly beneficial for our staff and the students we support during this time,” Pickering said. In an ever-changing job market, Cranfield University continues to configure their system so that the employability journeys of their students can continue without disruption.

As a senior at Northwestern University, I wrote an honors thesis on how public policy influences the development of high tech industries. In the process, I examined the intersection of the government and the economy, conducting extensive research and authoring a clear and precise academic paper. During my internship with the United States House of Representatives, I quickly and thoroughly reviewed proposed legislation and drafted memoranda analyzing the impact on existing law. My legal coursework, including a memorandum on the ministerial exception in employment discrimination, has refined my research and writing, and by pursuing a judicial internship, I hope to continue improving these skills in a practical setting.

A cover letter introduces and markets you effectively by complementing your CV.

A cover letter tells your story by highlighting your relevant strengths and motivation for the person and organisation you are writing to, rather than listing all the things that can already be seen on your CV.

Always take the opportunity to submit a cover letter if you are given the chance.

The cover letter gives you scope to showcase what interests and drives you, and your enthusiasm for an organisation and the role. You can use it to align yourself with the organisation’s strengths, values and culture, and highlight in a targeted way your knowledge and strongest, most relevant skills for the position.

The content and style are up to you, but a logical and engaging structure is key. Below are some guidelines.

How to Write Cover Letters

Aim for a professional tone that conveys your message to the reader succinctly - remember it's not an essay or dissertation! Write in clear, concise English – take care not to drown the reader with your detail and avoid jargon they may not understand.  The Plain English Campaign  has some good guidance on improving your writing style.

Structure it like a business letter, brevity adds power and aim for no longer than 1 side of A4 in length. However, if the organisation gives you very specific instructions about the structure. length and content, follow their guidance. 

Introduction

Introduce yourself and explain why you are writing. If you are responding to an advertisement, state where you saw it. This tells the recruiter why they are reading the letter, and it gives them feedback on which of their advertising sources are working. You need to think about how you would like to introduce yourself; it could be that you mention the course you are studying and when you plan to finish it along with your place of study.

Why this job?

Explain why you are interested in the job and the organisation. Tailor the letter to the organisation and job description to make it clear that you haven't sent out multiple copies of the same letter to different employers. 

Draw on your research, especially what you have learnt from speaking with their staff (e.g. while meeting them at a fair or event, or during work shadowing/experience) as this will demonstrate an awareness and understanding of them that goes beyond the corporate website. Be specific about why the position is particularly attractive for you, and back this up with evidence from your past, or by linking this to your overall career plans, and what you find exciting about this sector, don’t just repeat the text from their publicity material.

Explain why you are well-suited to the position. Refer to the most relevant skills (c.3-5), experience and knowledge you have and match what you say to the requirements outlined in the job description. Tell your story and highlight key evidence so that you are building on your CV, but not using exactly the same phrases. Make sure you read our guidance on  demonstrating you fit the job criteria  for more advice.

As your aim is to convince the recruiter that you are a suitable candidate for the job,  focus on your accomplishments and the transferable skills that are relevant to the role. State explicitly how you match the job criteria – don’t expect the person reading your letter to infer your skills or experiences for themselves. 

Support your claims by referring to examples that are already detailed in your CV. You can make a stronger, more credible case by linking different experiences that highlight similar skills or competences. For example:

  • You first demonstrated your organisational skills by creating (an event) at school, and you  have developed them further by raising (£xx) at last year’s fundraiser and, most recently, by leading (another event) for your society attended by (number) of people.
  • The role (applied for) would allow you to further explore your interest in mental health well-being  which has driven your success as college welfare officer and the personal sense of achievement gained from working as a peer counsellor.

Reiterate your desire to join the organisation and end on a ‘look forward to hearing from you’ statement, followed by ‘Yours sincerely’ if writing to a named individual and ‘Yours faithfully’ if you have not been able to find a named contact. 

  • Write to a named person if you can
  • If you have not been able to find a named contact, you could use ‘Dear Recruitment Manager’ or ‘Dear Recruiter’. 
  • Check your spelling and get someone else to read it over.
  • Check that it says clearly what you want it to say.  Are there any sections that are hard to read, overly long sentences? If yes, try to simplify the language, avoid jargon, use shorter sentences or take out that section completely.
  • Make the letter different each time. If you insert another company name, does the letter still read the same? If so, tailor it more specifically to the firm - you may need to do further research
  • Don’t start every sentence with “I”.
  • Give evidence for all your claims.
  • Be enthusiastic and interested.
  • Don’t repeat your whole CV.
  • It’s normal to find cover letters tricky to write. Give yourself plenty of time before the application deadline to redraft.
  • A careers adviser at the Careers Service can give you feedback on the content and structure of your cover letter and CV, and advise you on how best to target particular sectors – write one first, book an appointment on CareerConnect  and ask a careers adviser for feedback.

Academic Cover Letters and Statements

Academic cover letters.

Academic cover letters vary in length, purpose, content and tone. Each job application requires a new, distinct letter.

For applications that require additional research or teaching statements, there is no point repeating these points in a cover letter – here, one page is enough (brief personal introduction, delighted to apply, please find enclosed X, Y, Z documents).

Other applications ask for a CV and a cover letter only, in which case the letter will need to be longer and require more detail. Others ask explicitly for this detail in the form of a supporting statement that sets out how you fulfil the job criteria. Aim for a maximum length of two pages, though for roles at associate professor level and above it may extend to 3-5 pages. In all cases it is important to use the space effectively and show that you can prioritise according to what they are looking for.

In all cases:

  • Your letter is a piece of academic writing – you need a strong argument and empirical evidence
  • Write for the non-expert to prove that you can communicate well
  • Make sure you sound confident by using a tone that is collegial (rather than like a junior talking to a senior)
  • Demonstrate your insight into what the recruiting department is doing in areas of research and teaching, and say what you would bring to these areas from your work so far.
  • Give quantifiable evidence of teaching, research and funding success where possible.

Teaching Statements

What is a teaching statement and why do you need one.

When making an academic job application, you may be asked for a teaching statement (sometimes referred to as a ‘philosophy of teaching statement’). These statements may also be requested of candidates for grant applications or teaching awards.

A teaching statement is a narrative that describes:

  • How you teach
  • Why you teach the way you do
  • How you know if you are an effective teacher, and how you know that your students are learning.

The rationale behind a teaching statement is to:

  • Demonstrate that you have been reflective and purposeful about your teaching. This means showing an understanding of the teaching process and your experience of this
  • Communicate your goals as an instructor, and your corresponding actions in the laboratory, classroom, or other teaching setting.

Format and style of a Teaching Statement

There is no required content or format for a teaching statement because they are personal in nature, but they are generally 1-2 pages, and written in the first person. The statement will include teaching strategies and methods to help readers ‘see’ you in a lab, lecture hall, or other teaching setting. The teaching statement is, in essence, a writing sample, and should be written with the audience in mind (i.e. the search committee for the institution(s) to which you are applying). This means that, like a cover letter, your teaching statement should be tailored for presentation to different audiences.

Articulating your teaching philosophy

Consider your experiences as both teacher and learner, and always keep your subject at the forefront. Consider all opportunities that you have previously had to teach, mentor, or guide, and determine instances that were both successful and perhaps not so successful. Understanding why and how learning happens is an important part of your teaching philosophy.

Here are some general areas to focus on in your teaching statement:

Goals : Convey your teaching goals. What would you like students to get out of your courses? What matters most to you in teaching and why?

Strategies : List effective teaching strategies. How will you realise your goals? What obstacles exist to student learning and how do you help students overcome them?

Evidence : Specific examples of your teaching experience are powerful in a teaching statement. Provide evidence that your students have learned (or not) in the past.

Research Statements

Some applications ask for a short research statement. This is your opportunity to showcase your vision for your research, propose a research plan and show how this builds on your current expertise and achievements. It forms the basis for discussions and your presentation if you are invited for interview.

Remember to:

  • Provide a big picture overview of your research vision
  • Make sure there are clear links between your proposal and the work of the recruiting institution.  Each statement must be tailored to the particular role you are applying for
  • Write about your research experience stating the aims, achievements, relevant techniques and your responsibilities for each project
  • Write as much (within the word limit) about your planned research and its contribution to the department, and to society more broadly
  • Invest time and ask for feedback from your supervisor/principal investigator or colleagues.

Tips for Junior Research Fellowship or JRF Applications

Read the job description carefully to understand what is prioritised by the recruiting College or institution(s) beyond furthering your research.  If there are additional responsibilities such as outreach, mentoring, expanding or fostering academic networks, you will need to provide evidence of your interest and experience in these areas, as well as statements about how you would fulfil these roles when in post.

Try to meet current junior research fellowship (JRF) holders to gain further insight into what the role entails on a daily basis and what is expected by senior colleagues.

Show how your research contributes to, extends and/or maximises the impact of other work going on in the university. Then state why the JRF would enable you to further these in specific ways.

Think about how to demonstrate your experience in the following areas:

  • Your research vision.  Can you outline a big picture view of the research you want to do and its impact, for the department, the field and the wider society
  • Publications, think broadly here and include journal articles, book chapters, policy papers, expert reviews, public commentaries and any other type of media coverage
  • Funding, give prominence to any funding awards and to your grant-writing experience
  • Participation in professional activities such as establishing collaborations with people or organisations outside the university, reviewing journal articles and membership of relevant societies
  • Outline how you intend to participate in knowledge exchange and public engagement within your fellowship. These activities are now recognised as significant components of academic life

£33 million boost for national space programme

More than 20 national space projects have been announced today by DSIT Secretary of State Peter Kyle, on the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow.

National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP). £33 million for cutting-edge UK space technology to boost innovation and growth.

The projects, worth £33 million, come from the UK Space Agency’s National Space Innovation Programme – designed to invest in high-potential technologies, drive innovation and unlock growth across the UK. 

Eight major projects will receive £24 million of the total amount. These include funding for a sub-orbital rocket test by HyImpulse (Glasgow) from SaxaVord spaceport in Shetland, support for Rolls Royce (Derby) to develop micro reactors to support space exploration, and backing for Cambridge University spin-out SuperSharp to develop and launch a heat-detecting telescope to gather data that can be used to help tackle the climate crisis.  

The funding will also support Lunasa (Harwell) to build and test technology to help satellites safely dock with one another, Orbit Fab (Harwell) to develop a solution for satellite refuelling, and Wayland Additive (Huddersfield) to develop an electronic propulsion system.  

A project led by Spire Global (Glasgow) will further develop technology to supply unique weather forecasting data to global weather prediction centres, while ETL Systems (Hereford) will advance revolutionary ground equipment that links satellites to 5G and 6G mobile networks, improving connectivity.

From combatting climate change to staying connected with loved ones, space technologies play an important role in many aspects of our day to day lives.   But backing the growth of UK space companies is also essential for driving economic growth, boosting productivity, and creating wealth in every community.   Our £33m investment in these projects highlights the huge potential of the UK’s space industry, especially as we collaborate with international partners.

An additional 15 ‘Kick Starter’ projects will receive £9 million between them. These will support technologies and applications that are in an earlier stage of development and increase their readiness for use in commercial and scientific endeavours. The projects cover a wide range of space-related capabilities, from in-orbit servicing and manufacturing, as well as advanced material development and the use of satellite imagery.  

Dr Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency, said:  

These new projects will help kickstart growth, create more high-quality jobs, protect our planet and preserve the space environment for future generations. They go to the heart of what we want to achieve as a national space agency that supports cutting-edge innovation, spreads opportunity across the UK and delivers the benefits of space back to citizens on Earth.

This investment into the space industry demonstrates the importance of funding through a national programme to unlock innovative collaborations in all parts of the UK. We hope this will further strengthen the sector, and build upon the growth we have seen in recent years.

Project Summaries

Major projects, sharp (sustainable hybrid: accelerated rocket programme): £5 million .

Led by HyImpulse UK in partnership with Cranfield University, Birmingham University and AVICON Partnership.  

This project aims to conduct the vertical launch of a sounding rocket from SaxaVord spaceport in Shetland, with the goal of developing key components contributing to an orbital launch service. HyImpulse intends to provide a fully vertically integrated launch service for a low-cost, fast, flexible, and reliable deployment of small satellites to low Earth and sun synchronous orbits. 

An in-orbit demonstration of an unfolding TIR space telescope for climate change mitigation: £5 million 

Led by Super Sharp Space Systems in partnership with the University of Cambridge. 

The project will support the launch of an innovative, unfolding, thermal infrared (TIR) telescope into orbit for Earth Observation. The TIR telescope will collect data to drive positive action towards mitigating climate change. 

Space Nuclear Power Micro-Reactor Technology Development and Demonstration: £4.8 million   

Led by Rolls-Royce Submarines in partnership with Bangor University, University of Oxford and Rolls Royce Bristol. 

The project will raise the overall technology readiness level for Space Micro-Reactors, closing the gap to a full system space flight demonstration and the commercialisation of space nuclear power.   

OHMS-Sat (Operational Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder-Satellite): £3.5 million  

Led by Spire Global in partnership with STAR-Dundee, the Met Office and STFC RAL Space. 

This project will build on the prior developments of the Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder (HYMS) to accelerate it towards an operational mission to supply weather forecasting data to global numerical weather prediction (NWP) centres and create unique weather products.   

Electric Propulsion Innovations for Space and Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing: £2.7 million   

Led by Wayland Additive in partnership with Mars Space Ltd. 

The project aims to adapt Mars Space Ltd (MSL)’s spacecraft electric propulsion technology and apply it to Electron Beam Metal Powder Additive Manufacturing in Wayland Additive Ltd’s Calibur machines. The access to, and spinout of, this technology to terrestrial applications will result in economies of scale for the MSL hollow cathode technology, benefiting both the space and terrestrial sectors.    

SPITFIRE (Servicing Propellant Interface Technology For In-orbit Refuelling Effectiveness): £1.3 million  

Led by Orbit Fab in partnership with MDA Space and Robotics, and the University of Southampton.  

The project will develop a full high-pressure interface solution to flight qualification level. This will bring together all the critical elements of refuelling for a UK-developed pressure agnostic interface solution that could be used on all future Orbit Fab refuelling missions in the pipeline. 

Proximus Prime: Autonomous vision-based Rendezvous Proximity Operations (RPO) demonstration mission in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) using Small Satellites: £1 million 

Led by Lúnasa in partnership with Orbit Fab. 

Lúnasa intends to co-engineer, integrate and test its autonomous Rendezvous Proximity Operations (RPO) Kit around Orbit Fab’s commercially available satellite docking and refuelling interface. Lúnasa will deploy the RPO Kit into Space and perform a first-of-its kind commercial satellite autonomous close-proximity demonstration between two MicroSats. 

IF Lite project - Digital IF for Satellite mobile ground terminals and antennas:  £690,000  

Led by ETL Systems.  

ETL Systems will develop an advancement in satellite ground segment technology, merging Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) including satellites, with terrestrial networks such as 5G and 6G, alongside cloud virtualisation. This will facilitate seamless waveform alterations and accommodate edge devices like satellite terminals.  

Kickstarter Projects 

Supermagdrive: £1 million .

Led by Magdrive in partnership with Orbit Fab and the University of Southampton. 

This project will develop and scale up Magdrive’s plasma propulsion system - ‘SuperMagdrive’. The project focuses on development of the power system, ultimately demonstrating the technology with a test fire. Applications of this technology range from rendezvous and proximity operations to in space refuelling operations, contributing to a more sustainable space.   

Development of an ultra-high efficiency, low-cost flexible solar blanket and compact, modular roll-out mechanism for in-orbit deployment: £980,000 

Led by Lightricity in partnership with AVS Added Value Solutions and University of Leicester.  

Lightricity will work with partners to deliver a roll-out, in-orbit deployable flexible solar blanket or sheet for application in powering satellite payloads and potentially satellite electric propulsion, particularly suitable for small to medium satellites. 

DIGGER (Drilling and Integrated GigaHertz-Generated Energy Resource) for Lunar and Asteroid applications: £850,000 

Led by STFC in partnership with University of Strathclyde, UK Atomic Energy Authority and SJE Space. 

DIGGER is a feasibility study into whether terrestrial directed energy drilling (plasmas/microwaves) could be adapted for space applications, specifically lunar exploration. 

Direct Detection Receivers for Millimetre Wave Radiometry: £830,000 

Led by STFC RAL Space in partnership with University of Glasgow and Spire Global.  

The project will develop critical low noise amplifier and detector technology which will be at the core of the next generation of atmospheric remote sensing instrumentation. Applications extend beyond gathering data for weather prediction, with use cases being developed in emerging fields of millimetre wave non-destructive testing, short pulse laser and synchrotron diagnostics, security imaging, and theft prevention.       

TARS-IOD: Flight-ready model for In-Orbit Demonstration of Tomorrow’s Astro-Robotic System: £800,000 

Led by Lodestar Space in partnership with Momentus Space, Growbotics and University of Glasgow.  

Lodestar Space will develop a platform-agnostic modular robotic arm to perform contact dependent dynamic space operations. Intended for flight on Momentus’ Vigoride platform, the partnership also involves Growbotics and the University of Glasgow to equip the UK with sovereign capabilities for inspecting, protecting, and repairing vital assets beyond Earth. 

SCOPE (Solar Coronagraph for OPErations): Development and testing towards an environmentally-qualified model: £770,000 

Led by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). 

A project continuing the development of the SCOPE coronagraph, UKRI aims to image solar Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), enhancing our ability to predict CME arrival and thereby space weather, progressing towards an environmentally-qualified instrument. 

REALM (Rapid information extraction for environmental remote sensing on board spacecraft through application of light Machine Learning models in payload computing systems): £690,000 

Led by University of Leicester.  

The project will develop and demonstrate streamlined machine learning algorithms capable of complying with spacecraft power and computing performance requirements using drones. The project addresses the need for real-time and near real-time operation of various Earth observation applications ranging from wildfire detection to transport congestion monitoring. 

Advanced Microscopy and Thermal Control Upgrades to the SpaceLab Microgravity Research System: £560,000 

Led by Frontier Space Technologies, in partnership with Cranfield University. 

Frontier Space Technologies Ltd and Cranfield University will develop their SpaceLab, capable of conducting experiments in microgravity environments. Specific upgrades will significantly enhance capability for drug discovery and in orbit manufacture of high value products. Applications include pharmaceuticals, biosciences and material science. 

Multifunctional lightweight superstrates for high performance space PV (photovoltaics): £480,000 

Led by Loughborough University in partnership with the University of Cambridge.  

The project will develop a novel space photovoltaic device, enabling low cost, highly resilient solar power systems which meet the complex demands of next generation space applications.      

FIBSTAR (FIBre STeered SpAce Reflective mirrors): £450,000  

Led by iCOMAT in partnership with Cranfield University 

The project will develop and prototype lightweight carbon fibre mirrors using novel fibre steering technology. The primary aims are to develop a simulation design framework, then produce a representative demo article to validate benefits of fibre-steering. 

ABEP (Air Breathing Electric Propulsion) Intake End-To-End Simulation & Design: £390,000 

Led by Stellar Advanced Concepts in partnership with the University of Manchester. 

The project will work on simulating an Air Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) system to unlock new capabilities in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO). 

Transmitter for D-band MIMO enabled by traveling wave tubes for ultra-throughput satellites: £390,000 

Led by Lancaster University 

Lancaster University will develop a satellite transmitter enabling ultra-capacity satellite links at D-band (134 – 141 GHz) with a novel multiple antenna technique, or MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) powered by Travelling Wave Tubes (TWTs). 

CLASP (Capture of Large Spacecraft): £310,000   

Led by ClearSpace Today in partnership with the Satellite Applications Catapult.  

The project will develop a versatile capture mechanism for large unprepared satellites. The development involves analysing potential clients and identifying safe capture locations, creating a simulation tool for studying capture scenarios and trialling a robotics system based on the preliminary design of the capture mechanism. 

Biocomputer System for Space Biomanufacturing: £300,000 

Led by BiologIC Technologies in partnership with Axiom Space. 

The project will optimise BiologIC Technologies’ biomanufacturing system, built using world-leading biocomputer technology, to withstand space launch, operate in microgravity and ensure compatibility with space infrastructure. 

SOARS (Sewage) Outfall Assessment by Remote Sensing (SOARS): £250,000 

Led by HR Wallingford. 

The project will test the feasibility of two sets of novel Earth Observation innovations, addressing the strategic priority of sewage spills. SOARS will apply oil spill identification techniques to sewage spills and employ novel machine learning techniques to assess their impact.

All you need to know about your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter

If you are coming to the UK to study and you need a student visa then getting your CAS is a crucial step. But what is a CAS and why do you need one?

If you are joining Cranfield University you will receive your CAS letter from the Admissions team once they have reviewed your application for admission and supporting evidence. The University will only issue you a CAS letter if:

  • you will be studying on a full-time programme, which is more than six months long
  • your offer is unconditional and you have accepted your offer online via your EVE account

You should try and obtain your unconditional offer and get your CAS letter as early as possible to leave yourself enough time to submit your visa application.

Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter is a virtual document that contains your course information and CAS number (which is a unique 14-digit reference given to you by Cranfield University – your sponsor).

You can start preparing your Student visa application online but you cannot submit your visa application until you have received a CAS letter from Cranfield University. The CAS number is generated when we provide the Home Office with information about you and your programme of study.

A CAS is only valid for six months from the date it was issued and it can only be used once. The CAS links you to the University and means you can only use it to study at Cranfield University. If you apply for a Student visa using a CAS number from another university, you will not be able to use this visa to study on a programme at Cranfield University.

Once you have your CAS letter, don’t forget to check that all the details on the letter are correct, for example – your name, fees paid, course name, start and end dates need to be right for your visa application to go smoothly. If you think anything needs changing, you should contact your Admissions team as soon as possible.

You will have a latest arrival date mentioned on your CAS letter, this date indicates the last date you can physically arrive in the UK on your student visa. You must make every effort to arrive in the UK before this date however, we do understand that there can be unforeseen circumstances. If you are unable to arrive by the latest arrival date mentioned on your CAS letter, you should contact your Admissions team and the Student Immigration and Funding team as soon as possible for further advice before you travel.

How to apply for taught degrees

Cranfield University welcomes applications from students from all over the world. Here we explain how to complete your application and the information, advice and guidance available to assist you. You can apply online for most of our courses.

There is strong competition for places on our programmes and, although there are no set application deadlines, we recommend that you apply as early as possible to secure your place. This is important if you also want to apply for on-campus accommodation or need to apply for a visa to study in the UK. These processes will take additional time after your course offer has been made.

How to apply for a course

Applications are made online here or from the course page .

Once you have submitted your application you will receive an email confirmation. Within two days of submission we will confirm your username and password, so you can access our Applicant Portal, EVE, through which you will be able to:

  • view your application and personal details,
  • check the status of your application,
  • upload documents, if required, in support of your application,
  • request a change to your application,
  • update your contact details,
  • withdraw your application (prior to receiving a decision),
  • ask for a deferral (if you have received an offer).

To help speed up the application process, please provide your supporting documents, for example degree certificate, as soon as possible.

We only require electronic copies of these documents during the application process, which you can provide securely in the Applicant Portal or by email, there is no need to send photocopies by post.  Please do not send us hard copies of your original documents .

The University offers opportunities for students registered on an award-bearing course at another institution to spend time at Cranfield, either undertaking modules and/or research, to make use of our facilities in support of your current studies.

Admissions feedback, complaints and appeals

Admissions feedback.

Applications may be unsuccessful for a number of reasons. Sometimes there are more applications than places on a particular course, or an application may not meet the standard entry requirements.

We don’t routinely provide feedback to applicants on the reasons for our decisions. If you wish to request feedback on an unsuccessful application, please email our Admissions Office.

Complaints and appeals

We are committed to ensuring that all applications are considered fairly and within our defined procedures. Where applicants require sponsorship under the UK’s points-based immigration system, we are subject to external restrictions and requirements, which may affect our offer decision.

We will therefore only consider appeals or complaints in the following circumstances:

  • if you believe there has been a significant failure in the admissions procedure, or
  • if you believe you have been discriminated against unlawfully.

Cranfield University will not consider complaints or appeals based on any other reason, including where incomplete or inaccurate information has been provided. In line with our data protection policies, we don’t consider any appeals or complaints from anyone on your behalf. We do not share personal information with anyone outside the University, without your express consent.

Appeals or complaints should be made by email to the Admissions Office.

You should receive a response acknowledging your complaint, or appeal, within 10 working days.

The Head of the Admissions Office or a senior colleague will review your complaint or appeal and consult the relevant Head of School, or an appropriate representative. You will receive a full reply to your complaint, or appeal, including a reason for any final decision. This may include more detail about the initial outcome of your application. The outcome of any decision will be the final position of the University. The University will retain a record of your complaint or appeal for monitoring purposes to enable us to regularly review and improve our service.

Student Protection Plan

We publish a Student Protection Plan in line with the Office for Students (OfS) expectations. The plan sets out the University's approach to ensuring the continuation and quality of study for students should a risk to the continuation of their study arise.
