In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. These sustainable development goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change. All of the Durham Global Challenges – CDT projects are linked to one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, to work together to build a better future for everyone.

The Durham GCRF-CDT students focused on productive writing at Dove Marine (Newcastle University) on the coast of Cullercoats. They used their time to prepare for their Formal Progression Review. This requires the students to submit for assessment a substantive piece of work as defined by their departments. The structured programme included a break with an outdoor activity.

A member of the Durham Centre for Academic Development facilitated the event for the CDT.

This is how much you stand to earn as a law grad, uni by uni

Avatar photo

By CJ McKinney on Aug 3 2020 9:19am

Official stats show how much law grads are earning five years on

durham law school phd students

It’s official: Oxbridge is the place to study law if you want to make serious bank .

Government figures show that the average Oxford law graduate is making £72,600 five years after finishing their degree, while the median Cambridge LLB grad makes £59,900.

That puts Oxbridge at the top of a league table that ranks 99 universities in England, Scotland and Wales by graduate earnings in 2017/18. Those covered by the figures would have graduated five years previously.

The data excludes international students and people doing a second or postgraduate degree — so it’s a good gauge of how UK students doing their first degree get on financially after studying law. It works by matching people’s education records to information held by the taxman.

On the other hand, it doesn’t “control for differences in the characteristics of graduates”, such as how poor they were entering uni. Some institutions take a much higher proportion of disadvantaged students than others.

The boffins also point out that “higher education will have a range of personal and societal benefits that extend beyond earnings, which by its nature are not captured in the statistics presented here”.

Anyway — here’s the league table.

Wake County Public Schools bus routes could have longer wait times for students

WTVD logo

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Wake County Public Schools students are back in the classroom and bus drivers for the district will be expected to do more on their daily routes.

The district's hired more bus drivers with higher starting salaries, attracting more drivers than Wake County schools had last year.

They still have to include what's known as double back routes, meaning individual school bus drivers will do more than on route daily. This could add more time to the wait for students at bus stops as well as the workday of those drivers.

This year, the district is also sending direct messages by text or email if a bus is running late. That's in addition to the app where parents can track their child's bus in real-time.

Wayne State University

Law school law school, public interest & post-graduate fellowships.

Many students enter law school to advocate for underserved individuals and communities, and positively impact society through public service. Those laudable goals are achieved by pursuing opportunities in public interest. Public interest law, broadly defined, encompasses a broad spectrum of legal activities including civil legal services, public defense, impact litigation, issue-specific advocacy, and the formation and management of public policy. Though most public interest lawyers work in the nonprofit and government realms, practice settings also include private public interest law firms, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and more. Positions may include long-term postgraduate positions as well as limited duration postgraduate developmental fellowships.

In many respects, the public interest job search is akin to any other legal job search. However, there are some stark differences as well as subtle nuances of which you should be aware in order to mount a successful search. A public interest job search often requires a strong commitment, and a willingness to learn and adopt different strategies and approaches. To help guide your search, the Office of Career Success provides specialized counseling and a variety of services, programs, events, and resources for public interest students and alumni.

Additional public interest resources for Wayne Law students are available on our  Canvas page.

Public Interest Employers

Wayne Law students are eager to work with nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies during the summer, academic year, and after graduation. The Office of Career Success wants to help you connect with our students.

Pro Bono Participation

Public interest employers are also welcome to recruit student volunteers for short-term pro bono projects and ongoing volunteer opportunities by participating in the  Wayne Law Student Pro Bono & Public Interest Program.  The program encourages Wayne Law students to devote a minimum of fifty (50) hours of pro bono legal services during their law school careers.

Public Interest Career Fair

The office also hosts an annual Public Interest Career Fair during the winter term. The fair brings representatives of dozens of nonprofits, legal services, and governmental organizations to the Law School to share information and engage in table talk with Wayne Law students. Email  [email protected]  to learn more and register your interest in participating.

Post-Graduate Fellowships

Postgraduate fellowships are one-year or two-year fully funded often developmental positions working in or with non-profit or governmental organizations, or within academia. They allow new lawyers to expand their professional networks, gain exposure, and acquire experience in a wide variety of legal and policy interests ranging from internet privacy to criminal justice reform. Postgraduate legal fellowships tend to offer salaries and benefits comparable to traditional full- time, long-term public interest staff attorney positions, entry level governmental graduate degree holders or law school clinical faculty. Some also offer student loan debt relief.

They typically take one of three forms. Perhaps the most widely recognized postgraduatefellowships are project-based in which a third-party funds the fellow who devises and executes a public interest project with a self-selected host organization. They could also be organization-based in which a host organization funds the fellow who functions largely as a staff attorney. Academic or clinical fellows often manage law students and clinics, and engage in teaching and/or research in a law school setting.

Wayne Law graduates have successfully earned postgraduate fellowships including the competitive Equal Justice Works , Skadden , and Presidential Management Fellowships . However, a wide variety of fellowships exist. To learn more about fellowships in general and identify postgraduate fellowship opportunities, visit Equal Justice Works , the Public Service Jobs Directory ,and ProFellow .

The Office of Career Success also offers individual counseling and assistance in preparing to apply for postgraduate fellowships, crafting fellowship application materials, and interviewing for fellowships. Contact [email protected] to meet with your assigned advisor.

Class of 2025 LL.M. Students

News directly from Cornell's colleges and centers

Cornell Law Welcomes New LL.M. Class

By chris brouwer.

On August 8, Cornell Law School welcomed 129 accomplished and enthusiastic students from around the world to Orientation for their one-year Master of Laws (LL.M.) graduate program. Throughout Orientation, which concludes on August 24, students will be given tours of the campus, attend seminars and resource fairs, all while networking with other graduate and professional degree students from across a variety of different programs. Students will also have several opportunities to explore the scenic beauty of Ithaca and get to know their new “home” for the next year.

Orientation kicked off with a warm welcome to the incoming LL.M. Class of 2025 from Jens Ohlin, Allan R. Tessler Dean and Professor of Law. Dean Ohlin discussed the rewarding challenges and opportunities that await the students and shared that he had trained in the philosophical foundations of international law and was excited to welcome students from so many different international backgrounds.

Students then were able to experience their first class of the semester with an Introduction to the American Legal System, taught by Professor Hoi Kong, visiting professor of law. The class, held over the two weeks of Orientation, is designed to provide students with a survey and an analysis of the laws of the United States and is required for the General LL.M. degree.

The final event of Orientation is the International Graduate & Professional Student Orientation and Networking Reception, held August 24 at Statler Hall, which will provide new LL.M. students with an overview of services offered on the Cornell campus, notes about campus safety, academic integrity, mental wellbeing, and more.

The Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree at Cornell Law School is a one-year program that is designed for practicing attorneys and recent law school graduates who have already earned a first degree in law outside the United States. Through this program, students will increase their understanding of American legal principles and further develop their legal specialization.
