Noolagam Katturai (Library Katturai) in Tamil | நூலகம் கட்டுரை

நூல் என்றால் புத்தகம் என்றும், அகம் என்றால் வீடு என்றும் பொருள் படும். நூலகம் என்பதற்கு புத்தகங்களின் வீடு என்பது பொருள். நூலகம் மனிதனின் அறிவு வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஒரு முக்கியமான சாளரம். நாம் ஓரளவிற்குத்தான் புத்தகங்களை வாங்க இயலும், அதற்கு மேல் நமது அறிவினை வளர்த்துக் கொள்ள ஏற்ற இடம் நூலகமே. ஒவ்வொரு ஊரிலும் அரசின் நூலகங்கள் உள்ளன. பல கிராமங்களில் கூட நூலகங்கள் செயல்படுகின்றன.

பல அரசு நூலகங்கள் இலவசமாக நூல்களை படிக்கவும், வீடுகளுக்கு எடுத்துச் சென்று பயன்படுத்தவும் வழி செய்கின்றன. சில நூலகங்களில் அங்கத்தினராக ஒரு சிறு தொகையை செலுத்த வேண்டும். ஆயினும், நூலகங்களின் பயன்களை நோக்கும்போது நூலகங்களுக்காக நாம் செலவு செய்யும் தொகை ஒரு பொருட்டே அல்ல. ஒரு நூலகத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்துப் புத்தகங்களையும் நாம் வாங்க வேண்டும் என்றால் அது பெரும்பாலானோருக்கு ஆகாத காரியம். அதைவிட, நூல்கள் வாங்குவது மட்டுமில்லாமல் அவற்றை சேமித்து, பராமரித்து வைக்க இடம் தயார் செய்வது அதைவிடப் பெரிய காரியம். இந்த வகையில் நோக்கும்போது நூலகங்கள் நம் வாழ்வின் அரிய பொக்கிஷங்கள்.

நூல்கள் பலவகைப்படும். சில நூல்கள் அறிவினை வளர்த்துக் கொள்ளவும், சில நூல்கள் பொழுது போக்கிற்காகவும், சில நூல்கள் சில தனிப்பட்ட துறைகளில் தகவல்களை சேகரிக்கவும் பயன்படுகின்றன. நாம் நமது தேவைக்கு ஏற்றபடி நூலகத்தை முறையாகப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். அப்படி செய்தால் நமது நேரம் பயனுள்ள வகையில் செலவாகும். நூலகத்தில் நாம் செலவு செய்யும் நேரம் நமது வாழ்க்கைக்கு நாம் கொடுக்கும் முக்கியமான மூலதனம்.

நம் வாழ்க்கையில் நாம் பல தரப்பட்ட நிகழ்ச்சிகளைக் காணுகிறோம். பொதுவாக திருமணம், பிறந்தநாள் மற்றும் பல நிகழ்ச்சிகளின்போது பரிசுகள் கொடுப்பது வழக்கம். சில நாட்களில் உடைந்துவிடும் பொருட்களைக் கொடுப்பதைவிட புத்தகங்களை பரிசாக வழங்குவது ஒரு நல்ல செயல்.

சிலர் தமது வீட்டில் சிறிய அளவிலான நூலகங்களை வைத்திருக்க விரும்புகின்றனர். இந்த வகையிலான அமைப்புகள் அவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமில்லாது, அவர்களது குடும்பத்தினர், நண்பர்கள், உறவினர், மற்றும் விருந்தினர் என்று பலருக்கும் உபயோகப்படும்.

நூலகங்கள் நமது சமுதாயத்தின் மிக முக்கியமான அங்கங்கள். நாம் நூலகங்களை சரியாகப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்வது மட்டுமில்லாமல் நம்மாலியன்ற புத்தகங்களை நூலகங்களுக்கு நன்கொடையாக வழங்கினால் அது பிறருக்கும் உபயோகப்படும்.

Library Essay in Tamil

The Tamil word “Nool” means book and “Agam” means home. Library means the home of books. The library is an important window for the development of human knowledge. We can only buy books to some extent, therefore, a library is the best place to develop our knowledge. There are government libraries in every town. Libraries are also functioning in many villages.

Many government libraries offer free reading and permit taking books to homes for reading them at leisure. Some libraries require a small fee to become a member. However, when it comes to the benefits of libraries, the amount we spend on libraries is not an issue. If we were to buy all the books in a library it would not be possible for most people. More than that, it is even more difficult to find a place to store the books and also maintain them safely and in an orderly manner. In this sense, libraries are the rare treasures of our lives.

Books differ in their context and application. Some texts are used to develop knowledge, some texts are used for entertainment and some texts are used to gather information in some specialized fields. We must use the library properly to suit our needs. Doing so will let us use our time effectively. The time we spend in the library is the most important capital investment we make to enrich our lives.

In our lives, we see many types of events. Gifts are usually given at weddings, birthdays, and other occasions. Giving books as a gift is a better act than giving away items that will break in a few days.

Some people like to have small libraries in their homes. These types of systems are useful not only for them, but also for their family, friends, relatives, and guests.

Libraries are the most important part of our society. Not only do we make good use of libraries but if we donate books to libraries, it will be of use to others.

தமிழ் இலக்கியம்

 நூலகம் என்பது அடுக்கி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள புத்தகங்கள் அமைந்துள்ள இடம் என்ற காலம் போய் புதிய டிஜிட்டல் வடிவில் நூலகங்கள் தற்போது கிடைக்கின்றனï ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட தகவல் சம்பந்தமாக அறிவைத் தேடும் ஒருவர் நூலகம் சென்று தனக்கு தேவையான புத்தகத்தை தேடும் காலம் போய் வீட்டில் அமர்ந்தபடியே இணையம் வாயிலாக தனக்கு தேவையான புத்தகத்தை பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ளலாம் 

இணையவழி நூலகங்கள் வந்து விட்டபோதிலும் நிலையான புத்தக நூலகங்களுக்கு எப்போதும் வரவேற்பு இருக்கத்தான் செய்கிறது நூலகம் சென்று வரும் பழக்கத்தை பெற்றுவிட்டாய் இளைய சமுதாயத்தினர் மேலும் வளர்ச்சி பாதையில் செல்கின்றனர் சமுதாயத்தினர் குறிப்பாக தங்கள் பாடம் சம்பந்தமான அறிவை வளர்த்துக் கொள்ளவே நூலகத்தை நாடுகின்றனர் இருந்தபோதிலும் நூலகத்தை தொடர்ந்து பயன்படுத்துவதால் சிறந்த முறையில் நேரத்தை செலவிடும் ஒரு பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சமாக இந்த பழக்கம் இளைய சமுதாயத்தினருக்கு தேவைப்படுகிறது

 அதிக விலை கொடுத்து வெளிநாட்டு புத்தகங்களை வாங்கும் வசதியும் அவற்றை இரவல் வாங்கி படிக்கும் வசதியில் ஏழை மாணவர்களுக்கும் கிராமப்புற மக்களுக்கும் கிடைப்பது கிடையாது இவற்றை சரி செய்ய வே ஒவ்வொரு கிராமத்திலும் ஒவ்வொரு நகரத்திலும் அரசு தனது செலவில் புதிய புதிய நூலகங்களை அமைத்து வருகிறது தொடர்ந்து நூலகத்துக்கு ஒதுக்கப்படும் நிதியில் புதிய புதிய புத்தகங்கள் வெளி நாட்டிலிருந்து இறக்குமதி செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள மற்ற மொழி புத்தகங்களும் பரவலாக எல்லா நூலகங்களிலும் பகிர்ந்தளிக்கப்படுகிறது

This essay examines the articulation of voices and genres of the Indian contemporary multilingual canon by introducing Tamil fiction and the impact of translation on it. Holmström reconstructs the development of the modern novel in Tamil in the past decades, discussing in particular some authors who have been deemed to be extremely influential on the course of recent Tamil literary history. Many important works by these four novelists have been translated into other Indian languages as well as into English. Some have been translated into European languages such as French, Spanish, and German. Yet some translations have taken on a life of their own, while others have not. In the essay’s final remarks, the relationship between the original text and its successful translation is explored.

Tamil literature , body of writings in Tamil, a Dravidian language of India and Sri Lanka . Apart from literature written in classical (Indo-Aryan) Sanskrit, Tamil is the oldest literature in India. Some inscriptions on stone have been dated to the 3rd century bc , but Tamil literature proper begins around the 1st century ad . Much early poetry was religious or epic; an exception was the secular court poetry written by members of the śaṅgam , or literary academy ( see Śaṅgam literature ).

Notable works of the 4th–6th centuries include the twin epics Cilappatikāram (“The Lay of the Anklet”) and Maṇi mēkalai (“The Girdle of Gems,” the only extant Tamil Buddhist work) and the Tirukkuraḷ , a collection of aphorisms on such matters as love, kingship, and ethics . The 6th–9th centuries saw the emergence of bhakti , the poetry and religion of personal devotion, which began in the Tamil region with the hymns of the Āḻvār s and the Nāyaṉār s ( qq.v. ) in honour of the Vaiṣṇava and Śaiva saints. From the 12th to the 16th century many philosophical treatises and anthologies of religious legends were composed, as well as the classic writings of the poet Kampan . From the 19th century, Tamil literature was increasingly influenced by Western forms and ideas. See also Indian literature .

Lessons from the translation of a Historical novel in Tamil into English

The writer Kalki is known for writing historically based novels in Tamil. Some of them are Sivakamiyin Sabadam, Partipan Kanavu, and Ponniyin Selvan. Kalki Krishnamurthy’s Ponniyin Selvan is a masterpiece that has enthralled generations of Tamil readers. Many authors have written phenomenal books in Tamil literature after Kalki Krishnamurthy, but Ponniyin Selvan remains the most popular, widely-read novel. It has just the right mixture of all things that makes an epic – political intrigue, conspiracy, betrayal, huge dollops of romance, infidelity, seduction, passion, alluring women, unrequited love, sacrifice and pure love. The Part first of Ponniyin Selvan is translated into English by Indra Neelameggham in 1990. Another English version of Kalki’s Ponniyin selvan has been rendered by H.Subhalakshmi Narayanan in 2016. The present study is based on Indra Neelamggham’s English version of Ponniyin Selvan. The paper is not intended to evaluate the translation but to understand the strategies adopted by the translator for the successful translation of the historic novel Ponniyin Selvan in Tamil into English. A legendary piece of literature, Ponniyin Selvan ‘Ponni’s Beloved’ is Part One of five parts of the English translation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s Tamil Classic ‘Ponniyin Selvan.’ It has as its protagonist Vandiya Devan a young soldier who belongs to the brave warrior race of Vanars. He is on a secret mission for the Crown Prince of the Chola Kingdom. What follows is an adventurous journey through the realms of the Chola Kingdom. Spiced with bits of gossip, fun- frolic and subtle romance, the story is actually that of deceit and dare. While we see that the thirst for power of a few, combined with the determination to wreak vengeance by some others, is ready to hit at the very foundation of a great empire, we also see the grit, determination and intelligence of one a woman, try match up to the conspiracies of the enemies in an attempt to thwart their mission and secure the future of the empire. From the point of view standards of translation explained in the beginning an attempt has been made here to understand the strategies adopted by the translator to render the original in Tamil into English. We can guess that the translation is meant for non-native speakers especially for those who know English and not Tamil. The translator has to assume that the readers of the translation are not acquainted to the socio-cultural environment of the novel under consideration. The translator’s dictions should be understandable to the readers and at the same time should not mislead them. In spite of the stray instances of lacunae, we must say that the translator has successfully translated Ponniyin Selvan in Tamil into English. The strategies adopted by the translator are highly commendable. A translator can learn many things from the translation strategies adopted by Neelameggham.

Historical novel is a novel that has as its setting a period of history and that attempts to convey the spirit, manners, and social conditions of a past age with realistic detail and fidelity (which is in some cases only apparent fidelity) to historical fact. The work may deal with actual historical personages, or it may contain a mixture of fictional and historical characters. The historical novel Ponniyin Selvan taken for our analysis is a mixture of fictional and historical characters. The events are also both historical and fictional. Translating such a historical novel is a challenge for the translator. Arguably, the barriers to translation of the historical novel from Tamil to English are even higher since the challenges are many which include taking the readers not only to a new language situation but also to a period in the past. Before resorting to translation, the translator has to be sure that the novel to be translated meets the exacting standards of native English readers of historical fiction. The translator Indra Neelameggham who translated the first part of Ponniyin Selvan has done her job with meticulous care. The translated version can be taken as a model to those who resort to translation of historical novels. The strategies adopted by Indra Neelamggham to make her venture palatable to English readers are highly commendable. So it is worth attempting to learn lessons from her translated work.

The present research paper is an attempt to understand the Translation of Indian Literature into English from historical Perspective. India has long tradition of translating the texts from one to another language. It begins with the translation of Ramayan and Mahabharat from Sanskrit to local Indian languages. Doubtlessly, English is the language of global market and also well accepted in the multinational country like India, therefore Indian literature translated into English has its unique place. Besides, in order to accelerate the interest in translation, many agencies and institution like Sahitya Academy, National Book Trust, and National Translation Mission have been established for this purpose. The translation of India literatures into English language is a vital transformation for providing a space for sharing the Indian literature with not knowing Indian languages readers. By using the tool of translation, Indian rich literary traditions has been relocated and reasserted in world literature scenario. Besides, an attempt is made to comprehend the colonial designs behind the translation of that era and similarly the compulsions (market) of the postcolonial era are to be discussed. The present proposal is an attempt to understand the translation of Indian literature into English during the colonial and postcolonial era particularly in socio-political and historical contexts. Throughout the medieval period a lot of retelling has taken place in the literary arena of different Indian languages. This trend was led by Ramayana and Mahabharata, and by retelling we got texts like the Sarala Mahabharata in Odia and Krittivasi Ramayana in Bangla. In this paper, I shed light on another tradition of retelling in Bangla in the medieval period, and this tradition was not derived from traditional Sanskrit and Prakrit, rather it was derived from Perso-Arabic tradition of literature that was prominent at that time. Alaol's Padmavati was written in Bangla and the narrative and illustration was taken from Jaisi's Padmavati, which was written in Awadhi language and originally in the Persian Nasta-liq script. In my writing, I used Syed A. Sayeed's conception on retelling and how a narrative develops through this. I also used Raymond William's conception on structure of feeling to understand prominent discourse in literature at that time, and popular response towards it.

The present essay examines two moments from the evolution of the modern Malayalam novel, in relation to the reception of two classics in world literature, namely Victor Hugo's Les Misérables translated into Malayalam between 1925 and 1927 and García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude translated in 1984. The translation of Hugo's novel energized the scene of Malayalam fiction by infusing new modes of representation and widening the intellectual horizons of writers in general, and novelists in particular. The echoes of Les Misérables could be heard in Malayalam fiction well into the 1950s. The struggles against colonial and feudal authorities in Kerala, provided a fertile context for the imaginative interpretation of Hugo's humanist vision. The paper illustrates this point through close readings of critical essays, autobiographical narratives and debates on the nature of translation. The fascination of Malayali readers with García Márquez has resulted in the translation of his entire corpus into Malayalam. Magic realism as pioneered by García Márquez liberated the Malayalam novelistic narrative from social realist and modernist dogmas. The colonial disruption of oral narratives, the consequent cultural amnesia and the struggle to reclaim one's forgotten past are themes that struck a chord in Malayalam writers of fiction. Through a detailed discussion of the novel, Moustache by S. Hareesh, the interface between novelistic discourse and world literature is mapped in the latter part of the essay.

The comparative analysis delves into the cultural, linguistic, and philosophical nuances that shape the portrayal of betrayal in the works of these distinguished writers. While Shakespeare's tragedies, such as 'Othello,' 'Hamlet,' 'Macbeth' and 'Julius Caesar,' unfold in the complex tapestry of Elizabethan England. Thiruvalluvar's Tirukkural offers insights from the ancient Tamil Nadu, where ethical teachings and moral guidance take centre stage. The discussion aims to unravel the similarities and differences in the treatment of betrayal, considering the character motivations, societal implications, and moral dimensions embedded in the selected works. Through a multidimensional exploration, this paper seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of how these literary masters navigate the intricacies of betrayal within their distinct cultural and literary landscapes. This paper also discusses the limitations and future directions.

The world ‘translation’ owes its origin to the old French word ‘tranlacion’. This word was used widely in the 12th century and refers to the transfer of the relics of saints from one place to another. Translation in the current age serves the same purpose. It is an attempt at preserving the rich cultural heritage of mankind in the premise of a different linguistic tradition. Such an attempt but poses serious challenges for the translator. Transcending the obstructions and thereby preserving the original source primarily rises the question whether the writer should prioritize the language skills, or the emotional content delivered. The paper analyses this aspect of translation primarily with reference to Tha Sri Gururaj’s translation of Lakshmipathi Kolara’s Post Box No.9. It also emphasizes on the cultural blending in the play and how this gets confronted by Tha Sri Gururaj in the course of his translation of the play

The paper reflects on the translation of Lewis Carroll‟s „Alice in Wonderland‟ into Odia, an Indian vernacular language. It is produced as one of the numerous books under the Biswa Sahitya Granthamala project of a renowned Indian publisher, Granthamandir in the midtwentieth century. The paper aims at analyzing the translation strategy used for translating the text for the non-English speaking readers of a provincial Indian State, Odisha. We intend to examine the relationship between the purpose of translation, receptivity of the target readers and the chosen strategy. It is observed that the translation is neither simplification nor Odianization of the ST. We shall explore both verbal and visual strategies used for translation of Carroll into Odia.

The American Con Man Who Pioneered Offshore Finance

How a now-obscure financier turned the Bahamas into a tax haven—and created a cornerstone of global plutocracy

The financier and bon vivant Wallace Groves had little use for the law or social norms. His wife, a former Hollywood starlet, left him in 1937 after he’d had their infant son briefly kidnapped from their glittering Park Avenue triplex apartment. A day after the supposed abduction, authorities arrested Groves on the tarmac at Newark airport, in the company of two women whom Time magazine coyly described as his “girl friends.” Monaei (pronounced “ money -I”) Groves soon ended up with a divorce settlement worth about $3 million in today’s currency. New Deal–era federal prosecutors, bent on reining in what President Franklin D. Roosevelt called “privileged princes of new economic dynasties,” indicted him the following year on multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy.

Monaei’s testimony helped put Groves in a federal penitentiary. But his conviction didn’t break his spirit or teach him the error of his ways. Historical accounts indicate that he left prison with a new wife— Monaei’s former hairdresser —a ticket to the Bahamas, and a plan that would change the world. What started as his personal quest to rebuild a fortune turned a balmy Caribbean archipelago into a powerhouse of the global economy and a model for what we now call the offshore financial system. Groves started by taking over a sleepy lumber business on the island of Grand Bahama, but by 1955 had amassed so much wealth and political capital that he persuaded the colonial government to do something extraordinary: Authorities granted him carte blanche to rule and develop 50,000 acres—about 15 percent of the island, including what is now the city of Freeport—that would be immune from taxation and regulation for the next 99 years.

The Bahamas, which gained independence in 1973, are well known today as the former home of Sam Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency exchange FTX, whose meltdown cost investors $8 billion. But the company would never have set up in the island nation if not for Groves, the founding fraudster of offshore finance. Groves pioneered the model for turning British colonies with lax financial regulation and minimal taxation for expats into snug harbors for foreign capital seeking refuge from other countries’ laws. A generation later, Groves’s imitators expanded his model to the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, and other territories of the fading British empire.

According to the International Monetary Fund, the Bahamas are now the fourth-largest tax haven in the world in terms of the volume of assets flowing through the country. It’s a major hub of a global system that the economists Annette Alstadsæter, Gabriel Zucman, and their colleagues at the EU Tax Observatory estimate contains at least $13.7 trillion in private household wealth ; the IMF estimated that a similar amount of corporate wealth— $12 trillion —is held in offshore shell companies that exist mainly to dodge taxes and other laws. In total, that amounts to about a quarter of the wealth produced annually worldwide.

Offshore finance has become tightly integrated with the global economy, as corporations channel their money through the Bahamas and other havens to limit their taxes, deter outside scrutiny of their financial dealings, and take advantage of permissive securities laws. Offshore finance has probably affected your life without you knowing it. For example, lax offshore regulation made possible the securitization of risky subprime mortgages , the financial “innovation” that crashed the world economy in 2008. If you’re an American with a pension or a life-insurance annuity, odds are that at least some of your money has ended up in the offshore tax haven of Bermuda , as the business journalist Mary Williams Walsh reported earlier this year.

T oday, Groves is a largely forgotten figure, even in the Bahamas. But the ubiquity of offshore finance is partly a consequence of the model that he pioneered. In his heyday, he was lauded in the Bahamian press as a savior of the country: In 1965, The Bahamian Review praised the “intrepid developer Wallace Groves” and “the invaluable service done to this section of Mankind by the creator of Freeport.” Two years later, a Florida newspaper dubbed him “ the King of the Bahamas .”

It was an apt moniker for a man who had reinvented himself as a kind of freelance imperialist, making Freeport his own personal colony within a colony. The resorts, casinos, and financial institutions that arose there attracted not only tourists but money launderers, tax dodgers, and mobsters. Groves’s partners were denizens of the global financial demimonde: a Canadian gambler and Mafia associate, a former Swiss banker who had escaped the French penal colony of Devil’s Island after being convicted of financial crimes, and the notorious gangster Meyer Lansky.

Within 15 years of Groves’s acquisition of Freeport, his creation was flourishing to such an extent that The Economist described the Bahamas as “ the archetype of the tax haven .” Local publications billed it as the “Little Switzerland of the Western Hemisphere.” Hundreds of American, Canadian, and Swiss banks opened branches in the capital city of Nassau, and by 1975, the offshore business employed nearly 10 percent of the island’s population. By 2019, the Financial Times described the Bahamas as “the richest country in the Caribbean” in terms of GDP per capita, due largely to its offshore financial-services business, which by then made up an estimated 20 percent of its national economy . These figures represent an extraordinary transformation from the Bahamas of the mid-1940s, when local historians recorded widespread destitution and occasional death by starvation.

Yet the country’s Gini coefficient for household wealth—a measure of economic inequality—is among the highest in the world . Ironically, in a center of global finance, an estimated one in five Bahamians still lacks access to a bank account , and real wages are so low that the government occasionally institutes price controls to keep bread and eggs affordable.

About 50 miles from Miami Beach—the distance of a day’s sail—the Bahamas make for a convenient spot to engage in activities that aren’t permitted under U.S. law. Groves knew all about this from his Depression-era trips to the islands on his yacht, Regardless. When he was still a high-flying young financier, he got acquainted with the islands’ elite white power brokers and established two of the offshore corporations that later got him convicted of tax evasion .

At that point, Groves was just walking a well-trodden path of exploitation and chicanery first blazed by Christopher Columbus, whose initial steps in the New World were taken on the island now known as Grand Bahama. Within two decades, Spanish explorers had killed or carried off the island’s native inhabitants, and for centuries afterward, Caribbean historians note, pirates made the Bahamas their base and became the de facto rulers. From then on, being a law-free zone intermittently boosted the economy of the Bahamas.

In the 1860s, Nassau, the islands’ capital, grew rich for a few years by helping the Confederacy evade the Union’s maritime blockade, becoming a trading post where southern cotton was exchanged for British arms . When Prohibition banned the sale of liquor on American soil in the 1920s, the islands became a hub of “rum running.” This turned out to be what local historians have described as a “godsend for the Bahamian economy,” creating a steady flow of income from wealthy tourists and buyers to supplement a “desperately poor” nation just getting by on fishing and agriculture. It also created what social scientists call a “criminogenic environment”—one likely to reward illegal acts. The Bahamas’ role in skirting the laws of other countries intensified in the mid-1930s, when Americans started using the islands to escape the increased taxes imposed by Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Groves and other tax dodgers from North America and Europe were drawn to the Bahamas not only by the lack of financial regulation, but also by the promise of secrecy and stability offered by the institutions of British imperialism.

Under British laws designed to reward white settlers in British colonial possessions , the Bahamas levied no taxes on personal or corporate income. It did business in English—a major attraction for North Americans—and was governed by English law; the ultimate court of appeals for disputes in the Bahamas was the Privy Council in London. The currency was the familiar, reliable British pound.

But wealthy foreigners also had the security of knowing that what happened in Nassau would stay in Nassau. The Bahamian historian Anthony Audley Thompson described the impact of companies that “were in effect legal fictions designed solely for the purpose of evading taxation in countries abroad. Because no treaties provided for the exchange of financial information between the Bahamas and other governments, the accounts of such corporations were not subject to scrutiny by foreign authorities.” He added that the Bahamian government did not require these largely imaginary holding companies to file financial statements .

In short, British colonial administration had unintentionally put in place the legal and financial infrastructure necessary to build an ideal offshore financial center.

Life magazine likened the 1955 agreement between Groves and the Bahamas to the “blank-check” given in 1600 by Queen Elizabeth I to the British East India Company —the catalyst for a centuries-long enterprise of plunder and pillage that brought a globe-spanning empire into being. Groves’s innovation, such as it was, lay in making the perks cherished by British colonists—among those the absence of capital-gains and income tax—available to the global ultrarich, people who weren’t settlers and might never set foot in the islands at all.

As the British empire in the Caribbean began to break up in the late 1960s and early ’70s, many of the islands turned to Groves’s model as a way to gain economic self-sufficiency. Regional competition heated up, including from unexpected places such as the famously mosquito-plagued and underdeveloped Cayman Islands; within 20 years, by revamping itself along the Bahamas’ lines, the Caymans went from being a neglected dependency of British Jamaica to surpassing the per capita income of Great Britain itself .

This put pressure on the Bahamas to keep pushing the boundaries of the law as an international tax haven. Thus, two years after Bahamians declared independence from the British, an interview with the governor of the Central Bank concluded that “national self-sufficiency and self-reliance” required that the country not only continue its practices, but also aggressively expand its role as an offshore financial center. In other words, the new nation would sustain itself by helping wealthy foreigners break their own countries’ laws.

The 2022 collapse of Bankman-Fried’s FTX is a direct outgrowth of this historical trajectory. In keeping with the Bahamas’ centuries of resilience in the face of colonial crime sprees and contemporary frauds, the FTX debacle does not seem to have done lasting damage to the country’s economy. Yet the country’s government continues to bet its future on highly speculative financial ventures, enacting policies to entice more blockchain-based, decentralized-finance businesses to the country. For example, the Bahamian Central Bank was the first in the world to issue its own digital currency—the sand dollar—and announced a plan to give away $1 million worth of it as an incentive to early adopters. This strategy seems likely to perpetuate a cycle of economic boom and bust based on fraud and criminality. Wallace Groves is a historical footnote, but we are all living in the world he helped create.

Trump’s unproven story about Willie Brown and a harrowing emergency helicopter landing

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown told multiple news outlets that he never rode in a helicopter with former President Donald Trump.

Trump rode in a helicopter with former California Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom in 2018. Both men told news outlets that the helicopter neither crashed nor had an emergency landing.

Trump also included the anecdote in his 2023 book, "Letters to Trump."

Former President Donald Trump’s tale of an emergency helicopter landing unraveled after one of its main characters, former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, told news outlets it never happened.

"I know Willie Brown very well. In fact, I went down in a helicopter with him," Trump told reporters at an Aug. 8 press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. "We thought maybe this is the end. We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together and there was an emergency landing. This was not a pleasant landing. And Willie was, he was a little concerned. So, I know him. I know him pretty well."

Trump also said that Brown, who is a Democrat, "told me terrible things" about Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic rival for the White House. Brown and Harris dated decades ago. 

But Brown told multiple outlets that he never flew with Trump on a helicopter. We searched news databases for archival content and found no articles describing a helicopter ride involving Trump and Brown. Trump did fly on a helicopter with a different Democrat named Brown — former California Gov. Jerry Brown. There were no reports of a crash or emergency landing for that ride. The Trump campaign offered no evidence for his claim. Here’s what we know.

Brown, who was San Francisco mayor from 1994 to 2006, told multiple news outlets that he had never flown  in a helicopter with Trump, and that he hadn’t criticized Harris to Trump.

"You would have known if I had gone down on a helicopter with Trump," Brown told the San Francisco Chronicle . "I’ve never been on a helicopter with Trump."

In its own report scrutinizing Trump’s tale, The New York Times described Brown as someone who "loves regaling anybody who will listen with stories."

"He was doing what Donald does best, his creative fiction," Brown told local San Francisco’s  KRON-TV . 

We contacted the Willie L. Brown, Jr. Institute on Politics & Public Service in San Francisco, where Brown is chairman and CEO, and received no response. 

It seems Aug. 8 is not the first time Trump has told this story. He included the anecdote in his 2023 picturebook, "Letters to Trump."

"I knew Willie Brown a long time ago," Trump wrote. "He was a hot politician and had a great ‘way.’ We actually had an emergency landing in a helicopter together. It was a little scary for both of us, but thankfully we made it. His time with Kamala in retrospect turned out to be very interesting — but only he can tell that story."

The facing page of the book shows a photograph of a short letter Brown wrote to Trump in 2000, but it includes no mention of a helicopter trip.

Although we found no news articles about a helicopter crash or emergency landing involving Trump and Brown, we discovered a report about one treacherous helicopter trip involving the former mayor. 

In September 2004, The Associated Press reported that "a helicopter carrying former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown made an emergency landing at an elementary school playground" in Malibu, California, following a warning light signaling a possible technical problem. 

Willie Brown also flew on a helicopter with former Republican President George H.W. Bush in 1989 after an earthquake hit California, killing 63 people. In the aftermath, Bush traveled to the San Francisco Bay Area. Brown was then speaker of the California Assembly.

"All I can remember is Willie Brown, who also wanted to be there, saying, ‘Sig, which helicopter is the President riding in?’" Sigmund Rogich, who worked for Bush, told the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs. "I said, ‘That one.’ He said, ‘That’s the one I’m going in’ And that’s the one he went in."

It’s unclear whether Trump confused Willie Brown with former California Gov. Jerry Brown, with whom, reports show, he did fly in a helicopter. 

In November 2018, Trump visited California following the deadly Camp Fire . Trump toured the fire area on a helicopter with the then-Gov. Brown and then-Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. 

News reports about the flight mentioned neither a crash nor an emergency landing.

Newsom’s office did not respond to PolitiFact’s inquiries. Newsom told The New York Times Aug. 8 that the helicopter did not make an emergency landing. A spokesperson for Jerry Brown told the Times "there was no emergency landing and no discussion of Kamala Harris."

"Wow," Jerry Brown wrote on X in response to a post that showed side-by-side photos of him and Willie Brown. The former mayor is Black; the former governor is white.

Trump said he "went down in a helicopter" with Willie Brown. … We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together and there was an emergency landing."

Trump also included the anecdote in his 2023 book. But advanced news archive site searches show no evidence Trump was on a helicopter that crashed or made an emergency landing with Brown, San Francisco’s former mayor. Brown told multiple news outlets the story never happened. News reports described a 2018 helicopter flight involving Trump and California’s then-governor, Jerry Brown. However, news reports of that flight mention neither a crash nor an emergency landing.

There are certain writers you should never read before you yourself sit down to write, like P.G. Wodehouse and Tom Wolfe. For if you do, you will not be able to get their voices and rhythms out of your head, and you will have to confront the absolute certainty that you can’t pull off what they did. In Wolfe’s case you’ll find that you can’t quite replicate the raw energy of his prose: the fun; the snap, crackle, pop; the fuzzy effusions of new sociological categories — masters of the universe, social X-rays.

And then there’s his sheer audacity. His essay “Radical Chic” — about a cocktail party the conductor Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia, threw for the Black Panthers in 1970 — begins with Bernstein waking up in the middle of the night in a state of wild alarm. He had mentioned having a bad dream in an interview somewhere, and Wolfe took that little autobiographical morsel and spun it into a grand tour through the inside of Bernstein’s brain. Any responsible journalist can report, “Bernstein had a nightmare,” but Wolfe has the guts to take a flight of fancy and describe the nightmare from the inside, with its moments of narcissistic grandiosity and its descent into degrading humiliation.

Wolfe was known for his style, but it was his worldview that made him. He read Max Weber at Yale and it all clicked : Life is a contest for status. Some people think humans are driven by money, or love, or to heal the wounds they suffered in childhood, but Wolfe put the relentless scramble up the pecking order at the center of his worldview. It gave him his brilliant eye for surfaces, for the care with which people put on their social displays. He had the ability to name the status rules that envelop us in ways we are hardly aware of. He had a knack for capturing what it feels like to be caught up in a certain sort of social dilemma.

He was drawn to times and places where the status rules were shifting. His book “The Right Stuff,” about the U.S. space program, takes place at such a moment. Before, the combat pilots were the tippy-top alpha males in the world of flight, but then along came the astronauts to knock them off their perch. In “Radical Chic,” you can catch glimpses of the old blue-blood Protestant elite — the Astors, the Whitneys, the Rockefellers. But this is 1970. A new crowd is beginning to displace them: the Bernsteins, Barbara Walters. The members of this rising elite have often made their money in culture and the media, and include the formerly unthinkables — Catholics, Jews, Black people.

The old aristocrats had it so easy, those stately bankers in the J.P. Morgan mold.
