A Road Accident Essay with Quotations for FSC 2nd Year – 500+ Words

“be alert, accident hurt.” (charles lamb).

Life is not a bed of roses, its a bed of thorns. Many accidents take place in routine life. A road accident refers to an accident involving at least one road vehicle, occurring on a road open to public circulation, and in which one person is injured or killed.

On this busy planet, life has become very active and fast. People have to travel for various purposes. They use different vehicles to move from one place to another. Most of the people on the roads seem to be in such a hurry that they don’t bother to follow the traffic rules. Some of them even are unaware of the rules they should abide by on the roads. This negligence results in severe road accidents. These accidents can be fatal; if the victims are lucky enough to survive from them, they may live their entire life with the disability or at least suffering from a serious injury.

“Road sense is the offspring of courtesy and the parent of safety.” (Australian Traffic)

There are many other causes of road accidents. Most accidents are due to rash driving. Between speeding buses, motor-bikes, cars etc. in an uncontrollable urge to prove oneself as the ruler of the road, is the frequent cause of road accidents. Many road mishaps happen when the driver’s attention is divided between the person on the other side of the phone and the vehicles on the road. In spite of multiple warnings by the officials, people don’t restrain from using mobile phones and cause accidents.

“Accidents, and particularly street and highway accidents, do not happen they are caused.” (Ernest Greenwood)

The accident which I am going to narrate is very horrible. It was actually a road accident which I myself, experienced. It was just a rainy day and the start of another routine morning. l took a shower, called my friend to pick me from my home. All of this took a little longer than usual, not a surprise, so we were running late. My friend, Ali, was driving fast in an attempt to reach college in time.

“Chance takers are accident makers.” (Rick Allen)

We started down the first road to our destination. This road is about three miles long and filled with little hills. Unfortunately, there was lying a dead deer on the road. Our car struck it and went out of control.

“Know safety, no injury. No safety, know injury.” (Horace)

Suddenly, it hit a tree on the side of the driving seat. The car was stopped with a bulging sound. I got a slight injury on my head. I was terrified but I realized that God saved me from severe damage. I looked at my friend. His condition was very critical. I was calling him but he was unconscious. I was so confused that I did not know what to do to save him. I came out of the ear to seek help. Two to three people gathered there. One of them called the emergency number “1122” for the ambulance-immediately. The ambulance arrived very quickly. After about 15 minutes in the ambulance, we got to the hospital. We took him to the X-ray room and got X-rays of his arm and leg. They found out that his forearm bone was broken in his left arm. Besides this, his hip bone was severely affected. He was taken to Civil Hospital for surgery. A plate was put on his hipbones to help them stay together. He was in the hospital for six days and in a wheelchair for around eight weeks.

“When you. gamble with safety, you bet your life.” (Charles Dickens)

Thanks to Allah for saving our lives. We have now realized how precious life really is and that it can be taken away in a single minute. This is even easier when you are driving a car. One little mishap can result in an extreme injury or even death. We were lucky that we received immediate help, otherwise, things might have become worse. From this incident, I have learned a great lesson that we should follow traffic rules and avoid rash driving.

“Prepare and prevent, don’t repair and repent.” (A.A Milne)

Essay on A Bus Accident for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation – 300+ Words

Road accidents are taking place in our country (Pakistan) every day. Generally, these horrible accidents take place owing to reckless and rash driving.

Last year, I had to travel by road from Gujranwala to Faisalabad. I got up early in the morning. I said my Morning Prayer. I then packed up my luggage. I hired a taxi and reached General Bus-Stand. I bought my ticket and took a seat on the bus.

Soon the bus started. It was new and comfortable. There were about twenty passengers on the bus. The conductor expected to have more passengers in the way. All the passengers and driver seemed to be in a good mood. The driver was driving the bus a bit fast.

We reached Sheikhupura in about one and a half hours. The bus took a stoppage of ten minutes there and again started. We had hardly covered a distance of ten miles when our bus met an accident.

Our bus was running very fast. There came a big pit on the road. The driver applied the brakes. The brakes failed. The driver could not control the bus. The bus struck against the ground, time and again, hence its tie-rod was broken. Our bus collided with another bus, coming from the opposite direction. I was thrown out of my seat into the air through the gate of the bus. I fell down on the ground and fainted.

When I come to my senses, I witnessed a horrible scene. I sustained serious injuries. Around me were lying the dead and injured passengers. The front parts of both the buses were missing. A number of passengers had died. A woman had been cut into two parts. There was blood and death around me. I was, perhaps, the only passenger in senses. I could not, any longer, keep up my senses. I was again senseless.

When I again came to my senses, I found myself in the hospital. In the meantime, my parents had also reached there. I had to remain in the hospital for a week.

To conclude, road accidents in our country take place mostly owing to the reckless and rash driving. The accident, which I met and witnessed, was a horrible one. The scene of the accident haunts my mind me all the time. I can never forget this fearful motoring accident.

“An unfortunate incident happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in injury and damage”

It has always been very difficult to cope up with loss of life of the one with whom we are deeply connected.

“In life, more than in anything else, it isn’t easy to end up alive.”

Road accidents have become very common nowadays. With the increase in population, number of automobiles and modes of transport have also increased. People are careless and don’t know the basic traffic rules and ultimately meet accidents which could have been avoided if they had followed traffic rules.

They are many news about horrible accidents in newspapers. These accidents cause a huge loss to the life and material. People on the road need to be very careful. Even those walking on the footpath are not safe due to increase in such accidents. Every day people witness accidents in the news, from relatives and even with their own eyes and still they show carelessness while on the road.

Once I was on my way back home from festive shopping when I witnessed a road accident. I was with my sister and it was around 6 o’ clock in the evening. In the middle of the road, we saw a crowd surrounding something. We weren’t quite sure what was happening as the first thought that came to our mind was that it was probably a quarrel between two men. However, when we reached the spot, we found out an accident had taken place.

After that, we got to know the whole story. A man was crossing the road when a truck hit him leaving him severely injured. The man was lying on the ground bleeding profusely and people were calling for an ambulance. We instantly called up the ambulance but time was running out. Therefore, an auto driver took the man in his auto and rushed to the hospital.

Subsequently, the police arrived as the people had caught the driver and were beating him up. After the police came, they caught hold of the driver and asked about the incident. Later, we came to know that the driver was drunk. The police detained him and went to the hospital for a statement. Fortunately, the driver was declared out of danger. The doctors dressed his wounds and informed that he was still in shock.

That incident made me realize how precious our lives are.

  • Lack of Discipline

Main reason for the accidents to happen is that we are not aware of the traffic rules. We don’t follow them. The most common rule of driving is to wear helmet or fasten the seat belt. This simple rule can save us from a huge loss to the property and life. We can save our life and property by just following this simplest rule.

  • Natural Causes

Natural causes like bad condition of roads, bad weather and stray animals are not in our control but if we take primary precautions we can minimize their effect.

How to Prevent Accidents?

  • Never Drive when Feeling Sleepy

In daily routine when we are coming from work we are tired and there is probability we may feel sleepy. In that case we should never drive because the chance of a serious accident increases. It is really good to relax a bit and then drive or better take a taxi.

  • Do not Drink and Drive

Drinking is the main reason of a number of accidents on the roads. First of all, drinking is not a good habit but, let us suppose for a moment, you have to take 2 or 3 glasses, you should never ever drive under such condition. Because drinking disturbs mind and normal routine. When you are drunk never drive and ask some other to drive the car.

  • Make Sure to Wear Helmet/Seat Belt

This rule is the easiest one to follow and has great benefits. This minimizes the effect in case of an accident.

  • Don’t Use Mobile Phone While Driving

This rule is one of the most neglected traffic rule. Everyone looks busy with mobile even on the road. We can find a huge number of people from our daily life who use mobile phone while driving. Attending calls, sending and receiving messages can divert or mind and we can lose control on the steering which causes accident.

  • Never  Over speed

No matter, how tempted you feel to speed up your car or bike after hearing the title tune of “Dhoom”. One should never do it because we all know that what is shown in movies is not real. A wise man once said

“It’s better late, than never.“

Conclusion:

There are so many things which are under our control and also there are some things which are not under our control. So, let’s do what we can do and leave the rest to God. With some effort I am sure we can bring down the number of road accidents.

100 Words Essay On Road Accident

Nowadays, road accidents are a widespread occurrence in our country. Lack of traffic education is the main factor in many accidents. Numerous drivers operate vehicles without having received a proper education in traffic laws. The government needs to act appropriately to stop them.

I saw a terrible accident a few days ago happening right in front of me, close to my college. After my afternoon coaching class, I was returning home. No one was with me; I was by myself. A truck approached from the other side of the street at full speed as a man attempted to cross. The vehicle was moving so quickly that the man had to run to get by it. He was hit by the truck and was instantly killed. I froze on the road because I went into shock, and it was only after people gathered at the scene that I was able to move.

200 Words Essay On Road Accident

Road accidents are widespread in large cities because of the large number of trucks, buses, auto rickshaws, cars, and other vehicles. Traffic law violations are the primary cause of road accidents. This is why adherence to traffic laws must be there. However, people frequently violate them, particularly when they are aware that the police don't usually capture them. While those who disobey the law and get away with it are fortunate to avoid being caught, they put their lives in danger each time they do so.

Road accidents can occur when people violate traffic laws, such as by running red lights, exceeding the posted speed limit, etc. This is why we should always abide by the laws that are established because they are there to protect us.

To ensure that we are protected even in the event of an accident, we must always wear seat belts in cars and helmets when riding scooters or motorcycles. In order to prevent severe road accidents, we should abide by these traffic safety regulations. Because of negligent drivers, even pedestrians might suffer injuries in traffic accidents.

Many of us have probably witnessed traffic accidents in person, on television, or in the movies. They can be quite frightening, therefore we must always exercise extreme caution when we are outside.

500 Words Essay On Road Accident

Road accidents are relatively common. Road accidents are becoming increasingly common because people use personal vehicles for all types of work, which causes gathering and accidents to happen. Nowadays, the laws of the road are rarely observed by people. There are many reasons for road accidents. One of the primary reasons for road accidents is cities are populating more densely, and roads are not in good condition.

Whenever we pick up a newspaper, we find at least one or two stories involving road accidents. Road accidents cause both material and human loss. So, regardless of the kind of transportation we choose, we need to drive more cautiously. Due to increased road accidents, even those walking on the roadside are unsafe. We see accidents daily- in the news, listening to family members, and even personally on mobile phones. We should always follow traffic rules while travelling and be careful of other vehicles.

Road Accident Prevention

To decrease the death rate, we must prevent road accidents. Thousands of people lose their lives in road accidents each year. Traffic laws must be taught to children at a young age. They must be instructed on life's worth and how to preserve it. Additionally, the government must create stricter rules for those who break traffic laws. Regardless of age and gender, they must punish those guilty of breaking these rules or take additional practice.

An Experience That Changed Me

Once, I was returning home from holiday shopping when a car accident happened in front of me. It was around five o'clock in the evening, and I was with my mother. We noticed a group crowding over something in the middle of the road. We weren't entirely sure what was happening because our initial assumption was that there was a fight between two men. But when we got there, we saw there had been an accident.

We then learned the entire story. A truck struck a man crossing the street, seriously injuring him. People were asking for an ambulance as the man was bleeding heavily and lying on the ground. Time was of the essence, so we immediately contacted the ambulance.

The police then arrived as the driver was being beaten up after being captured by the crowd. When the police arrived, they grabbed the driver and questioned him about the incident. Later, we learned that the driver had been drinking. He was held by the police, who then went to the hospital to get a statement. Fortunately, it was determined that the victim was safe. His wounds were treated by the physicians, who also noted that he was still in shock.

That incident made me realise how precious our lives are. We must all be cautious when on the road, walking, or by car; that does not matter.

We should always be careful on the roads. When we drive two-wheelers, we should wear a helmet, and when we are driving a car or truck, we should wear a seat belt. Parents must also act as an example for their children by never using a phone while driving. To reduce the likelihood of an accident, they must always wear their seatbelts and helmets.

Every day in the newspaper, we read about road accidents where people get severely injured and even die. You may have also been in an accident yourself or witnessed one happening. Many of us may even have seen crowding on the street around two vehicles that look bashed up. Road accidents are not uncommon in big cities where there are thousands of cars, motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, trucks, buses, and other vehicles. Road accidents are most often the result of people breaking traffic rules.

There is a reason that traffic rules are created in the first place. However, people break them all the time, especially when they know that the police don’t always catch them for doing it. While the people who break the rules and get away with it are lucky not to get caught, they are endangering their lives whenever they indulge in such misbehavior. The penalty for breaking traffic rules is generally a fine, but worse consequences of this are injuries like paralysis, broken bones, concussions, etc. The worst possible outcome of breaking traffic rules and getting into a road accident is death.

The traffic rule that people break the most is jumping red lights, which means they keep driving even when the signal is red. Another bad habit that causes road accidents is drunk driving. What they don’t realize is that when the light is red for them, it is green for someone else and that they are putting their lives in danger because of this. A lot of times, people take turns on the road without putting on their indicator to do so, and this can lead to road accidents too. Thus, breaking traffic rules is very harmful, and people should refrain from doing so not only out of fear of the police but also because it risks their lives.

When I was 11 years old, I was going out somewhere with my father, and while we were waiting at a signal for the light to turn green, the traffic began to increase a lot. Suddenly, we realized why it was increasing – many people had come out of their cars to see what was happening. There was a crowd on the road around a man who was lying on the floor next to a fallen scooter, and everyone was trying to help him get up. The people took him straight to the hospital, where he had to get a few stitches and go home.

Road accidents are very scary, so we must ensure the utmost safety while driving. One must always wear their seat belt, only drive when the signal is green, stick to the speed limit, stay in your own lane, wear helmets when riding bikes, etc. The best way to prevent getting in a road accident is to ensure that you are following all the rules required to keep you safe. After all, we only have one life, and it is important to take care of it so we can enjoy it to the fullest.

Essay on Road Accident

Road accidents are an unfortunate reality of our lives. The daily news reports generally contain at least one incident of a road accident. Depending on the severity of the accident, the number of casualties and the damage done can be concerning. Road accidents cost a lot of lives and property damage. To avoid accidents, everyone should be more careful and vigilant on the streets. As a driver, one must be extra cautious because one mistake from the driver can cost the lives of innocent others.

The Road Accident That I Experienced

I remember the first road accident I witnessed. It had changed my perspective on life. I still remember the date and the day very intricately. It was the 20th of September 2016. I was returning home from tuition. My mother had come to pick me up. It was around 6 o'clock in the evening. When we reached the bus stand, we saw a huge crowd of people at a few feet of distance from the bus stop. There were men in the crowd who were screaming in the regional language.

At first, we couldn't understand what was going on. After a while of careful overhearing of the conversation of everyone near us, we could understand that there was an accident. So to get to the bottom of it we asked a shopkeeper what had  happened. He told us that indeed an accident took place a while ago. He then went on to give us a detailed event of what happened. According to him, a pedestrian was crossing the road. A passenger's bus had hit him. The man was left bleeding on the street. The people in the area then cornered the bus and assaulted the bus driver. The police were called to the scene. As for the pedestrian, when the police came over, they declared the man dead. However, as a formality, they sent him to the hospital but according to the shopkeeper, there is not much hope for a miracle.

This incident made me realize how fragile life is. It could very well have been me or my loved one instead of that man.  The man was not at fault as he was following the rules, but because of the ignorance of another careless man, he had to lose his life. This incident has left a scar on my mind which still bothers me at times.

Road accidents are a fairly tragic event that has dangerously increased in numbers nowadays. Today, there are more automobiles on the streets than ever. Some say that this increase in the number of automobiles is the reason the number of road accidents is increasing too. Some others say that people nowadays have become more careless, this leads to a higher number of accidents due to carelessness. Another problem that is very prevalent in India is the lack of civic sense in people. People in the cities of India do not strictly adhere to the traffic rules; some people also lack the basic road sense. On top of that, certain parts of the city have narrow roads. All these add up to increase road accidents.

Description of Road Accident:

Road accidents are scary for our lives. In recent times it has increased more. Every morning when you open a newspaper every second or third page will have news related to road accidents. The reason for increasing road accidents is due to the fact that people are buying more automobiles and have also become careless while driving vehicles.

Many a time we have seen that people are just avoiding following traffic rules. Especially in metropolitan cities, people are more careless while driving vehicles which ultimately lead to road accidents.

The foremost causes of road accidents in such metropolitan areas can be narrow roads and roads with potholes.

Thus a road accident damages the lives of life and material. People should be very careful while driving or walking on the road.

It is also seen that walking on the road is also equally dangerous because of heavy traffic it can also be harmful to the people walking on the road. Hence, such people should walk on the side of the road or walk on footpaths.

Road Accident Incident:

Once I was coming back from my office at that time when I witnessed a road accident. I was with my co-worker and it was around 6 o’clock in the evening. In the middle of the road, we saw a crowd surrounding something. We weren’t sure what was happening as the first thought that came to our mind was that it was probably a quarrel between two groups of people but then after reaching the spot, we found that an accident had taken place.

After talking with the people present there, we came to know that a man who was crossing the road met with an accident while crossing the road. A truck passing by hit him leaving him with serious injuries. The man was lying on the ground bleeding and people were calling for an ambulance, plus they also informed the police about the incident.

Subsequently, the police arrived and caught the driver of the truck as people had already taken a hold of the driver. During the investigation with the driver, the cops came to know that the driver was drunk and was driving the vehicle. Later on, cops detained him and took the injured person to the nearest hospital, and took a statement from the injured person. The driver was released later based on the statement given by the person. That incident made me realize how precious our lives are and we must be very careful when we are walking on the road, on foot, or driving a car.

  Prevention from Road Accidents:

There are some most important points that every person should keep in mind while driving or walking or crossing the road. These points are as follows:

Drive within the prescribed speed limit.

Don’t drink or smoke while driving.

Follow all the traffic rules as they are for our safety.

Never use mobile phones while driving a vehicle.

Always drive in the proper lane.

While riding a bike always wear a helmet.

This essay recounts the details of that harrowing event, aiming to shed light on the consequences of negligence and the paramount importance of vigilance while on the road.

The Day of the Accident

It was a bright and sunny afternoon in mid-July. The streets were bustling with people, and the air was filled with the usual cacophony of honking cars, chattering pedestrians, and the distant hum of city life. I was on my way home from school, walking along the sidewalk, lost in thoughts of the day’s events and the homework that awaited me.

As I approached a busy intersection, the traffic light turned green, signaling for pedestrians to cross. I waited for a few seconds, allowing a car to pass before stepping onto the zebra crossing. What happened next unfolded in a matter of seconds but felt like an eternity. A speeding motorcycle, attempting to beat the red light, swerved into view. The rider, realizing too late that he couldn’t make it, attempted to brake but lost control.

The motorcycle skidded across the road, heading straight for a pedestrian about to reach the other side. In a desperate attempt to avoid a direct collision, the rider veered to the left but ended up crashing into a nearby car. The impact was so severe that the rider was thrown off his bike, landing several feet away, motionless.

The Immediate Aftermath

The scene that followed was one of chaos and panic. The sound of the crash had drawn the attention of everyone nearby. Pedestrians screamed, and drivers honked, creating a cacophony of noise. I stood frozen, my heart racing, as I processed what I had just witnessed.

Several people rushed towards the injured rider and the occupants of the car, trying to offer assistance. I remember the overwhelming sense of helplessness as I watched them dial emergency numbers, their voices urgent and shaky. The driver of the car, visibly shaken but uninjured, stepped out to check on the rider, who lay still on the pavement.

Within minutes, the wail of sirens filled the air as an ambulance and police cars arrived at the scene. The medical team quickly attended to the rider, who was fortunately still alive but seriously injured. The police cordoned off the area, redirecting traffic and starting their preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident.

Reflections on the Incident

As the adrenaline faded and I continued my journey home, the gravity of what I had witnessed began to sink in. It was a sobering reminder of how quickly a normal day could turn tragic due to a moment of carelessness. The rider’s decision to speed and beat the red light had not only endangered his life but also those of others around him.

This incident highlighted the critical importance of road safety measures, such as obeying traffic signals, wearing helmets, and driving within speed limits. It also underscored the unpredictable nature of road accidents and the need for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant at all times.

In the days that followed, I found myself more cautious and aware of my surroundings while walking or riding in a vehicle. The accident served as a powerful lesson on the consequences of negligence on the road and the collective responsibility we share in preventing such tragedies.

The road accident I witnessed was a stark reminder of the thin line between life and death and the impact of our choices behind the wheel. It taught me the importance of road safety, not just as a set of rules to follow, but as a commitment to protecting ourselves and others. As we navigate the roads of life, let us do so with caution and care, mindful of the precious lives that depend on our vigilance and responsibility. This narrative serves as a call to action for all of us to prioritize safety and make our roads safer for everyone.

Road safety is important to all of us. It has become a necessary practice to safeguard our lives. Road safety has gained more significance due to the increasing number of vehicles on roads. If we follow the road safety rules properly, many accidents can be prevented.

Wearing helmets, riding vehicles within the appropriate speed limits, and using seat belts are some essential things that everyone should remember. Even the kids in schools are taught the basic rules of road safety, such as understanding the traffic lights and walking on the zebra lines or on the left side of the road.

We should never use cell phones while crossing the road. Practicing the road safety rules is for our own benefit. After all, God has given us this precious gift of life. We must protect it by all means and not make any reckless decision to ruin it.

Introduction:

Road safety refers to the procedures for ensuring safety on our roads. Road users refer to vehicle owners, motorcyclists, commercial vehicles and pedestrians. Lots of lives have been lost and families have been destroyed because of road mishaps. Some of these unfortunate incidents could have been prevented or stopped with proper safety precautions. This article explains how we can stop this menace.

Road Safety Measures:

To minimize common road accidents like car crashes, there are several precautionary road safety steps that can be taken. Make sure that you always wear seat belts when children are in car seats. Also, more importantly, do not get behind any wheel unless you are licensed by your country as fit enough to drive.

Distractions are dangerous while driving and have led to the loss of lives. Hence, speaking on the phone while driving should be prohibited. Health care facilities should be close to roads at different sections and should be sufficiently equipped. These are to aid in providing excellent medical care to road victims.

General Rules Guiding Road Safety:

While the above-mentioned rules are specific, there are some general rules to keep in mind when driving or using public roads in general.

They are as follows:

1. Knowing your signals and paying attention to them whether you are a pedestrian or driver.

2. Using sidewalks and pedestrians crossings.

3. Ensure that you know the rules and laws abiding in the state you drive.

4. Ensure that you have an approved driving license.

Road Safety Sensitization:

It is important to sensitize the general public about the importance of road safety. This will further help create awareness and reduce accident rates and road mishaps. This can be done through seminars and education of children about the rules guiding road safety and consequences of flouting it.

Conclusion:

With strict adherence to road safety rules, it is certain that road casualties can be minimized.

Road safety is a serious issue and it should be considered with strong efforts to curb road accidents and save lives. With the increasing road network, increasing number of vehicles, increasing traffic mess and increasing vehicle speeds, it is very important.

Road Accidents:

Road accidents have become common — everyday media is filled with new road accidents — and fatalities are very high. It is estimated that around 1 million people die each year in road accidents. Pedestrians, cycle riders, bike riders, car and other vehicle users throng the roads daily for everyday chores that puts their lives to risk.

What is Road Safety?

Road safety refers to all efforts to prevent the road accidents and protect the road users from getting injured or killed. The key goal of road safety measures is to minimize the accidents of all kinds.

Traffic Signs and Signals:

Traffic signs are the signs put up to give information and instructions to all road users for their and other’s safety. There are many types of signs for road safety on the roads such as prohibitory, warning, service, information, direction, electric lines, repair work, hospital, school, and so on. Signage also include welcome, express way, freeway, route, street name, toll, road condition, speed limits and cultural signs.

The signals, manual or automated, are also used on the roads to control traffic and pedestrians movement for the safety of all.

All the road users’ need to be educated to follow all the safety rules, traffic signs and signals for their own safety and safety of other road users.

Other Considerations:

For our own safety and other’s safety, all road users need to be sensitized for following the road safety rules. In addition, efforts shall be made for safe road designs, road condition maintenance, safe driving skills, safe vehicle designs and safety gadgets in vehicles to prevent accidents.

The safety of people and resources while on road is what road safety is all about. This may sound like a small subject but it is surprising that we see so many road-related deaths every day in different parts of our country. There are many factors which attribute to this high rate of deaths from not following the rules to ignorance about the importance of road safety. While travelling on roads whether on foot or by using vehicles of our choice we often tend to be very casual in obeying the laws of the land. That is why perhaps so many lives are lost just because of our casual attitude towards road safety.

Road Accident Statistics in India:

On an average, more than 137000 people die of road related accidents in India every year. In fact on a daily basis around 16 children lose their lives on roads in our country. Astonishing, isn’t it? The figures are so high that even the World Health Organisation (WHO) has often shown concerns about it. The top states who witness the most road accident-related deaths are Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

Road Safety Rules in India:

India has the second biggest road network street in the world and records for 10% of overall road-related deaths. Laws controlling the movement out and about are given under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 which is an Act passed by the Parliament of India which came into power from July 1, 1989, and is applicable to all states of India. Even in the year 1914, India has such enactments in place, however, the casual behaviour of the people has always led to the ignorance of these laws leading to frequent violations and casualties.

It is not essential that only the people who have obtained a driving license should be aware of the traffic rules. This is applicable to all the citizens of the country who travel on roads by any means. For instance, we should all know the major road signs and what they mean. It is important to understand the signals at crossings so that we don’t land up between the traffic and injure ourselves and the person driving the vehicle.

Similarly, people walking on foot should always walk on the left side of the road. Moreover, you should be attentive when walking on the road or driving a vehicle. That is why it is always advised that while on road we should keep our mobile phones as well as headphones away and pay attention to the horns of the vehicles instead.

However, people walking on the road with their headphones, at times injure themselves due to their ignorance of what’s happening around. Similarly, talking over phone while driving is a common sign on the roads in India despite the fact that it is a punishable offence.

Farming of laws is not sufficient enough to ensure road safety. We must follow them judiciously as well in order to ensure safety for us as well as others.

Road safety is the measure taken by the government to reduce the accidents and deaths caused by road negligence. Nowadays, harsh driving and careless walking on roads have caused many life-threatening accidents to take place. To avoid such fates it is important to follow certain rules while you step out on a public road.

Basic Rules for Road Safety:

1. The vehicles should travel on the left side of the road giving way to the vehicles coming from the opposite side.

2. While in a turn or bend of the road the drivers should slow down the vehicle for smooth travel and avoid harsh turns.

3. Speed limits assorted to every region and road type should be maintained.

4. Areas like schools and other crowded places are to be passed carefully to avoid crashing on any pedestrians.

5. Drivers of two-wheelers should wear high-quality helmets so that even when an accident takes place they can be protected from serious injuries.

6. Those traveling on four-wheelers should wear seat belts without any fail so that they can be saved from harsh crashes even if an accident occurs.

7. A fixed and considerable distance should be maintained between each vehicle traveling on the road to avoid crashing on the other in case of a sudden breakdown.

8. Study the road safety rules carefully and see for instructions and signs on the road for smooth driving.

9. Pedestrians should follow all the road crossing rules like using the zebra line, following the signals, etc., while crossing a road.

These are some of the basic rules to be followed while traveling. Following these safety rules will help to prevent and protect you from most of the accidents caused due to carelessness and hence ensures road safety.

Spread Awareness:

Proper awareness and education about road safety and rules will help a lot in this case. People who cross the roads in most of the odd times and those who exceed the speed limits or overtake in busy areas should be made aware of the situation where all their lives are at serious threat hurrying to reach the destiny.

This awareness can be spread through seminars, workshops, awareness programs, etc. In most cases, students and teenagers are those who tend to break the rules and risk their lives. It is important to educate them about road safety and the precautions to be taken. The best way to make this happen is by adding a road safety topic in their study syllabus and starting from the basics.

Defensive driving techniques should be compulsorily taught to all those who get their driving license so that they can be aware and handle difficult situations. Understanding road signs are the basics everyone should be known, whether the driver or a person walking on the road. Following the road safety measures will not only benefit your life but also the life of others who walk or travel with you.

Slow and steady wins the race. The same can be told in case of road travels. Slow and controlled traveling will help you to reach your place more safely than speeding and risking your life. Get proper knowledge on road safety before starting your outdoor travel or even a walk.

Road safety is one of the issues that is never stressed enough and this is the main cause why lives of people get endangered on the road really fast. Being cautious on the road is a trait that every driver has to learn before they step behind the wheel of the car. Most of us know the road safety procedures and rules and when we drive, we respect the lives of others as we do for our own but sometimes there are reckless drivers that we can do little against.

Some findings and figures about road safety can help us understand what exactly makes this issue so important for public safety.

Facts about Road Safety:

Every year more than one million people die because of lack of the knowledge about road safety which causes car accidents and up to fifty million people that are involved end up injured or disabled. One of the major road safety issues are the lives of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclist that get endangered in half of the car crashes.

Besides the human cost of car crashes, there is an economic dimension and research shows that up to 4% of the Gross National Product is spent on road safety issues. One of the best road safety tips is to put on a seat belt and the statistics show that you reduce your chance of dying in a car crash by 61% if you do so. We often drive with our children in the car and road safety is equally important for them too that includes the mandatory use of child restraints, this method has reduced the number of child deaths by 35%.

Even though wearing a helmet is not intended for car drivers it is still an important road safety rule, that is this rule is meant for the other drivers on the road like cyclists and bike drivers. And we should not forget that alcohol is the biggest enemy of road safety, there is even an estimate that a world-wide ban on drunk driving could reduce the number of crashes by 20%.

The Importance of Road Safety:

The facts about road safety tells it all and we can do a lot to make driving a much safer occupation. The reasons why road safety is so important are multiple, first of all, it will save human lives. Secondly, it can reduce the amount of public spending related to road safety issues.

What Can We do to ensure Road Safety?

One great comparison shows that for every kilometer per hour decrease in the driving speed, there is a reduction of 2% in the chance of occurrence of a car accident. The other thing that we can do to improve road safety is to use simple engineering methods in the design of the roads, that will make people more aware when they drive and more conscious of their mistakes. Such solutions are low in cost and very efficient and many countries have invested in their implementation.

Basically, the best thing we can do is to be informed about driving rules and to follow them throughout, no matter what the situation is. Learning to drive is an important part of every young person’s life and sooner or later we all have to do it. Once we do get on the road, we have to be responsible and through that, we can ensure the safety of others.

Road safety is important for all drivers and the evidence that we should make a bigger effort to make traffic safe for all is compelling. The answer to this problem is in all our hands, every time we sit behind the wheel and start driving.

Road accidents happen every day. The emphasis on road safety has been made to ensure that the number of road accidents reduce. Road accidents are fatal and have far much more consequences. Road safety involves methods of preventing injuries for pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and everyone else that uses the road. The global statistics on road safety reveals that approximately 231000 people die from road traffic accidents in India annually.

On road, the people mostly affected by traffic accidents are pedestrians, motorists and cyclists. Due to these consequences, road safety measures have been put in place to regulate the road users and reduce the incidences of accidents in Indian roads. WHO has intervened in the road safety measures formulation and implementation.

Road Safety Projects in India:

Road safety in India has become a challenge and that is why projects are ongoing to restore safety in roads for all road users. The projects are supported by different organizations including the WHO (world Health Organization) and the Indian government. The projects are aimed at increasing public awareness about road safety, facilitating law enforcement and implementations regarding road safety, advocating for safety behaviour and addressing road safety issues.

Another project by WHO to enhance road safety in India is to promote motorcycle helmets and reducing drunk driving among citizens. The project was implemented in three cities including Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Visakhapatnam. Legislation through the review of road safety rules and regulation of motorcycles act enabled amendments that ensured road safety in India.

Social marketing was also supported by WHO. The social marketing involved mass campaigns for road safety on social media and communication with the target audience in large populations. The use of mass media in public awareness is very efficient because the audience is broad and the message is clearly communicated to the public.

Importance of Road Safety:

Road safety is important in mitigating consequences of accidents on roads . Road safety is implemented through road safety rules. There are rules for every road user. Rules on over speeding, keeping to the left or right, caution on the surrounding environment and traffic lights cut across for all countries in road safety regulation. Adherence to these rules is important so as to minimize road accidents.

It is important to enhance road safety so as to preserve life for citizens through reduction of road related deaths. Road accidents are fatal and should be prevented by following rules when using the roads. Road safety is also important for the maintenance of infrastructure. Accidents on roads cause destruction of the roads, road signs and property that crashes. The rehabilitation of infrastructure is costly and brings about unnecessary spending.

The use of road safety measures ensures economic growth and stability. Most deaths in India are caused by road accidents kill the youth. The youth form the majority of the working nation and continuous deaths affects the performance of a nation. Also, due to the expenses incurred during treatment of injuries and rehabilitation resulting from road accidents, the economy is negatively affected.

Challenges in Maintaining Road Safety in India:

Maintaining road safety is a governmental task that faces challenges during implementation of strategies. The government of India lacks resources to enact road safety regulations. Putting up road signs that govern safety in roads is costly and the campaigns and projects are also expensive.

Fragmented systems of managing road safety in India cause inefficient road safety regulation. The government formulates different rules that do not relate with each other and this causes collision between the regulation processes. Also, the systems are inadequate and are deprived of resources to support road safety enhancement and sustainability. Addressing traffic issues has not been efficient in India because of violation of traffic rules by road users.

Lack of awareness by the public on road safety is a major challenge. Children have to be taught on road safety rules in order to enhance safety for them on the roads. Also, mass media campaigns on road safety are not as frequent as they should be. People always need a reminder of traffic safety rules so that adherence can be achieved.

In conclusion, road safety is an issue that has impacts on the lives of citizens and the nation as a whole. Road safety measures are put in place so as to ensure that there is safety for all road user. Road accidents cause deaths and injuries to people in India and higher incidences are experienced when traffic rules are violated. The road safety management in India is supported by the government however, there are challenges that compromise road safety.

Road safety can basically be defined and explained as the safety and guidance of all people from road accidents and road side injuries . Road safety involves a variety of measures and methods that must be and are followed by the users of the road so as to prevent different accidents and serious injury. There is the utmost need for us to pay proper attention to road safety whether it is vehicles we are using or other means of road transportation. Research findings have shown that students and most especially children are the groups that are most vulnerable to accidents on the road leading to major or minor injuries and sometimes even death largely due to the complete absence or inadequacy of supervision by an adult.

Historical Background:

One of the major problems of injury prevention and public health is road crashes. The problem of road crash is a lot more serious because most of the victims of these crashes are always healthy before the crash. The World Health Organisation have put forward that the number of people that are killed every year as a result of road accidents is way above one million.

The World Health Organisation also published a report in 2004 that the estimated number of people that are killed in car crashes each year is 1.2 million and the number of people that were left injured due to traffic collisions every year was about 50 million. Road accidents were also found to be the major cause of the death of people (children) between the ages of 10 and 19 years old. It was also stated in the report that developing countries were the biggest contributors to the large numbers and the amount of deaths can be reduced by more than half if simple preventive measures can be taken.

Vehicle Safety:

There are a lot of ways through which we can improve road safety that depends on the various means of transport taken.

Some of the ways include:

1. Buses and Coaches:

There are a lot of ways we can improve safety which would in turn lower the chances of the occurrence of accidents. If we avoid standing in places that are not safe in the coach or bus and also avoid rushing and we follow all the set rules of the coach or bus, the road safety of the passengers will be greatly increased. There are numerous safety measures and features that can be adopted to improve the safety in coaches and buses including the inclusion of safety bars that people can hold onto.

Some of the road safety measures that can be adopted on coaches and buses include:

i. Endeavour to leave your place early enough so that there is no need to run in order to catch the coach or bus.

ii. Following the queue at the bus station or bus stop is important.

iii. There should not be any situation where you get off a bus while it is still in motion or get on it at an unofficial hour.

iv. A bus or coach should never be boarded or gotten off at an unauthorised station or bus stop or at a crossing of red light.

v. Buses should only be boarded after they have come to a full halt without pushing others or rushing.

vi. The bus’ footboard is not a place to stand or sit.

vii. Any body part should not be put outside the bus whether moving or stationary.

viii. There should not be any form of noise making or shouting that might distract and confuse the driver.

ix. If one is standing in the bus, one should hold the handrail most especially where the bus is turning.

x. All the safety rules of the bus should be adhered to.

We can improve safety in cars by lowering the odds of an error occurring on the part of the driver, also by the design of vehicles that reduce the extent of damage caused by crashes. Countries that are industrialised have special specifications and requirements for vehicle systems, devices, construction and design that are safety related.

Some of them are:

i. The deployment of passenger restraints like airbags and seat belts that are enforced with laws that require their use.

ii. Equipments that helps in the avoidance of crash like reflectors and lights.

iii. Systems that are driver assistance-enabled must have stability in electronic control.

iv. Some designs  should be there for crash survivability like interior materials that are fire retardant, safety glass use and systems of fuel integrity.

v. Sobriety detectors are really great, they interlock and prevent ignition if the breath of the driver is detected to have a significant amount of alcohol. Companies that are involved in commercial transportation use sobriety detectors for their drivers and sobriety detectors are also suggested to offenders of drunk-driving voluntarily.

3. Motorbikes:

Statistics from the United Kingdom have shown that there is a nine times more likelihood of motorbike riders to be involved in road crashes than the car drivers. Also, motorbike riders have a seventeen times more likelihood to die as a result of road crashes than the car drivers. This high risk is largely due to the absence and sometimes inadequacy of the crash protection available for motorbikes unlike the protection available for enclosed vehicles.

Also, motorbikes usually travel at high speeds and this can be dangerous. US statistics have put forward numbers that show that more intoxicated motorbike riders are involved in crashes that are fatal than all other forms of accident on the road. Helmets are also very important in motorbike safety. It was estimated that helmets only have an efficiency rate of 37 percent in the saving of lives during motorbike crashes.

The transport department of the famed European commission put forward a report that has put the estimate of accidents that involves truck as a result of the inadequate securing of cargos at 25 percent. When cargos are not properly secured, there can be loss of human lives, vehicles, cargo and so many more.

Essay on Road Accident: We all know how difficult it is to cope up with a sudden loss of life of a near and dear one; moreover, if the person who died was the bread earner, then the lives of the dependents turn topsy-turvy. One of the major reasons for sudden or unexpected deaths in India are road accidents. The irony is that, most of the road accidents could have easily been avoided. In the following essays I have tried to discuss the causes of road accidents and also suggested some solutions. I hope you will appreciate my effort and also my essays.

Long and Short Essay on Road Accident in English

We all know the traffic rules. We also know the consequences of not following the traffic rules. Still, the irony is no one follows it and by the time a person realizes his/her mistake, it’s too late. Now-a-days it has almost become a fashion to flout traffic rules. In the following Road Accident essay, I have tried to figure out as to why road accidents have become common in India and as to how we can reverse this trend. I hope you will like my approach and the essay on Road Accident.

Short Essay on Road Accident – Essay 1 (200 words)

Maximum people including me, believe in luck or fate but the problem is that, when something goes wrong, we blame it on fate, rather than accepting our fault. For example, if a meteor falls on one’s house and destroys it. It can be said that it’s bad luck because there was no way by which the person could have guessed its coming or could have done anything to protect his/her house but if you are going on your bike and due to some reason, your bike slips and you get a serious head injury. Is it luck? I am afraid it’s not, It’s gross negligence. If you would have worn your helmet, the head injury would have been avoided.

According to a credible research, most of the road accidents could be avoided or their effect could be minimised if proper precautions are taken. The issue is that maximum people are aware of the safety precautions and also traffic rules and regulations but they consider it (especially youngsters) cool to not to follow them. How this trend started and gained momentum can be a matter of debate but the fact is this problem has taken monstrous proportions and if something is not done urgently, then very soon things will go out of control.

I think no amount of rules and regulations can solve this problem. For this the mentality of the public (especially youngsters) needs to be changed. I think, this could be done by creating awareness among public through various awareness programs. Let’s hope that in the coming time better sense will prevail among the public and the number of deaths caused by the road accidents will come down.

Essay on Road Accidents in India – Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

When we were young, we were taught “precaution is better than cure”, and so many other things like “one should help a person in need”, etc but as we grow old we almost forget these things and seldom follow them and by the time we realize that what was taught to us is really true and worthwhile, it gets too late.

Road Accidents in India

According to a data, around one and a half lakh persons die due to road accidents per year in India alone and according to a research most of the deaths are avoidable. Then the million-dollar question is, “why we are not avoiding it”? From where this idea, that wearing helmets and fastening of seatbelts is boring has crept into our minds, I am unable to answer.

I tried to find the answer to the question. According to my dad, films, television and media are one of the main reasons. Film stars and television personalities are shown indulging in irresponsible behaviour in movies and serials. For example, riding very fast on a bike without a helmet and with a girl on the back who is cheering and shouting with joy. Kids and young adults who idolize film stars and television personalities find it cool and try to imitate it in real life without realizing that what was shown in the movie was complete fake or special effect.

Movies like “Dhoom” and “Fast and Furious” etc have glamorized speed. Even bike companies in their advertisements emphasize on the speed of their machines. That is why fast bikes are a craze among youth. Every boy wants to own one these and every girl wants to have a boyfriend who has one of these.

Young boys and girls are routinely found racing on empty roads (sometimes busy also) and highways by the police. Normally they are left with a strong warning but the problem is that, it is not mending them.

Government and few non-government organizations have taken the initiative to educate the youths. Even film and television stars have come out and appealed to youngsters. Progress is slow but let’s hope that in coming time people (specially youngsters) will behave more responsibly and we will be able to control road accidents in India.

Essay on Road Accidents, Causes and Remedies – Essay 3 (400 words)

We Indians are a great lot and are really great at discipline. Where it is written “no parking”, there one can easily find many vehicles parked. This is a very common scene in cities. The next one is more hilarious. In government offices one can find writen on the wall, “do not spit” or in Hindi, “Yahan pe thukna mana hai”. At that very place you will find lots of spits”. The silver lining is that, at least it’s not life threatening but not following traffic rules and guidelines could result in loss of life.

Causes and Remedies of Road Accidents

  • Lack of discipline

I think, this is the biggest reason of road accidents. We are aware of the rules but just don’t follow them. The most common rule which we don’t follow is, wearing of helmets and fastening of seat belts. This simple precaution can save us from serious injuries in case of accidents and it is easy to follow.

On should not cross a railway crossing when it is closed but who cares. It is common to find bikers and cyclists pushing their vehicles from under the closed bars. When asked for reason, the common reply is, “sir ji late ho raha tha”. I am unable to understand why one would risk his life, just to save 5 or 10 minutes. If you want to reach your office/home in time, then it is a good idea to move a bit early but crossing a closed railway crossing is not advisable as it could result in serious injuries or even loss of life.

Mobile phones have revolutionised our world but at many times they prove a big nuisance. It is common to find people chatting on their mobile phones while they are driving. This increases the risk of accident many times. It is not advisable to talk on the phone even if using hands free because one still gets distracted.

Listening to music or radio is also not advisable while driving because it can also cause distraction. If we follow all these rules (be in discipline), there is a good chance that we may never meet an accident.

  • Natural and other Causes

There are many factors which are under our control but also there are some factors which are not under our control. For example, bad roads, bad weather, stray animals etc. I agree, these factors are not under our control but if we take precautions, we can minimize the effect of accidents in case they happen.

People need to be convinced that following rules and being in discipline is also cool and it is in their interest to follow traffic rules.

Essay on How to Prevent Road Accidents – Essay 4 (500 words)

We all are used to ignore statutory warnings. Be it cancer warnings on chewing tobacco and cigarettes or traffic warnings, like, “drive slow”, “do not overtake” etc. Normally our attitude towards them is that, they are meant to be ignored.

Actually, preventing road accidents is very easy, there is no rocket science in it. We just have to stick to basics but the problem is, who cares.

How to Prevent Road Accidents

  • Do not Over Speed

We all love speed. This is why fast bikes and fast cars are in great demand. Even manufactures highlight the speed of their machines in their advertisements. When traffic police catch us speeding, then our standard excuse is, “sir, I was getting late for office”. I am sure most of us will agree to the fact that it’s a lame excuse. The solution to this is simple, “leave your house early”.

Sometimes we do it for fun (specially youngsters indulge in racing or stunts). I think they get inspired from movies and serials without realizing that what is shown to us is special effect and fake.

  • Do not Drink and Drive

This reason is responsible for a majority of major road accidents. First of all, it is not a good idea to drink but let’s say, you end up eventually having few glasses in a friend’s party then under no circumstances should you be driving. You can ask someone who is not drunk, to drive or you can take a taxi etc.

It has been proven scientifically that alcohol reduces the ability of the mind to think and react properly. Therefore, doesn’t matter how confident you are feeling, you should never drive after drinking. Certain medications also cause the same effect on mind as alcohol. So, if your doctor has advised you not to drive after taking some medications, then you should avoid doing it. As by doing it you are putting your life and also others life in danger.

  • Learn Driving Before Driving

Most of us have never learnt driving formally (I mean in a driving school or by a driving instructor). Someone (normally relatives) just guide us a bit and then we think we are good to go. Persons (specially teenagers) who don’t know proper driving are at more risk than those persons who know proper driving.

This is why there is a driving test before one can get a driving licence but every one knows the reality. For few thousand rupees one can get a driving licence (without giving a driving test).

There are many who don’t have a driving licence at all and they continue to drive freely. If one is caught then he/she just gives a few hundred rupees to the concerned official and you are good to go.

  • Proper Maintenance of Roads

Many accidents also happen due to poor maintenance of roads. For example, potholes, broken roads, open manholes etc increase the chance of accidents. Therefore, they should be taken care of, to decrease the chances of accident.

If one is careful and follows all rules and regulations carefully then many road accidents could be avoided and our roads will become safer.

Long Essay on Road Accident – Essay 5 (600 words)

Accident by definition means, “an unexpected and unintentional incident, causing damage or injury” but in most of the cases accidents can be avoided, if certain precautions are taken. So, if we take precautions, it’s good for us and if we don’t take precautions then we ourselves are responsible for the consequences.

According to a data around 1.5 lakh people die per year due to road accidents in India alone. Of course, this number could be reduced easily but for that we have to change our attitude and start following traffic rules and regulations.

What Precautions should be taken to Avoid Road Accidents?

  • Never Drive when Feeling Tired or Sleepy

Normally when we are returning from day’s work, we are tired. There is good chance we may feel a bit sleepy. In that case one should never drive because the chance of (serious) accident increases. It’s a good idea to relax a bit and then drive or better take a taxi.

  • Never Drive under the Influence of Alcohol or other Drugs which Hamper the Ability of the Brain

This one is a strict no-no. Under no circumstances one should drive after consuming alcohol. If some one does it, he/she is risking his/her life and also the life of others.

  • Wear Helmets and Seatbelts while Driving

This rule is the easiest one to follow and has great benefits. This minimizes the effect in case of an accident.

  • Never use your Mobile Phone while Driving

This rule is one of the most leniently followed. It is very common to find people talking on their mobile phone while driving. Talking on the mobile phone causes diversion of mind and in a flip second one can lose control and that can cause accident.

  • Jumping Red Light can be Fatal

Traffic lights are made for a purpose. If you jump a red light (no matter why), you run the chance of getting hit by a vehicle coming from other direction. Therefore, it’s a good idea to stop at red light and move only when it’s green.

  • Never Overspeed

No matter, how tempted you feel to speed up your car or bike after hearing the title tune of “Dhoom”. One should never do it because we all know that what is shown in movies is not real.

Sometimes people speed up to reach the office/house on time. For this, the easy solution is to start your journey a bit early.

  • Make Sure your Headlights and Tail Lights are in Working Condition

Suppose you are driving in night and you want to turn your vehicle to the left, so you turn on your left indicator but your tail light is not working, so the driver behind you was not able to know that you want to turn and he hits your car.

This is a possible scenario. So, it’s a good idea to keep your car in good condition and get it repaired as soon as you find any faults.

  • Drive Slowly and more Carefully in Bad Weather

The chances of accident increases by many folds in bad weather (rain, storm, snow etc). Therefore, one should avoid driving in bad weather but if that is not possible then one should drive very carefully and slowly otherwise he/she can get hurt.

  • Busting of Tires

Suppose you are driving on a lonely road and your car runs over an iron nail and your tire bursts. There is a chance that your car may flip or your car may get hit by another car. An iron nail was there on the road. You can’t do anything about that but if you had taken precautions like driving under speed limit and wearing of seatbelts, you can definitely minimize the effect of the accident.

There are so many things which are under our control and also there are some things which are not under our control. So, let’s do what we can do and leave the rest to God. With some effort I am sure we can bring down the number of road accidents.

“Can you name the truck with four-wheel drive, smells like a steak, and seats 35?”

Back in 1998, “The Simpsons” joked about the Canyonero, an SUV so big that they were obviously kidding. At that time, it was preposterous to think anyone would drive something that was “12 yards long, two lanes wide, 65 tons of American Pride.”

In 2024, that joke isn’t far from reality.

And our reality is one where more pedestrians and bicyclists are getting killed on U.S. streets than at any time in the past 45 years – over 1,000 bicyclists and 7,500 pedestrians in 2022 alone.

Vehicle size is a big part of this problem. A recent paper by urban economist Justin Tyndall found that increasing the front-end height of a vehicle by roughly 4 inches (10 centimeters) increases the chance of a pedestrian fatality by 22% . The risk increases by 31% for female pedestrians or those over 65 years, and by 81% for children.

It’s hard to argue with physics, so there is a certain logic in blaming cars for rising traffic deaths. In fact, if a bicyclist is hit by a pickup truck instead of a car, Tyndall suggests that they are 291% more likely to die.

Yet automakers have long asserted that if everyone simply followed the rules of the road, nobody would die. Vehicle size is irrelevant to that assertion.

My discipline, traffic engineering , acts similarly. We underestimate our role in perpetuating bad outcomes, as well as the role that better engineering can play in designing safer communities and streets.

A bicycle, painted white and decorated with flowers, attached to a street pole at an urban intersection.

Millions of road deaths

How bad are the bad outcomes? The U.S. has been tracking car-related road deaths since 1899. As a country, we hit the threshold of 1 million cumulative deaths in 1953, 2 million in 1975 and 3 million in 1998. While the past several years of data have not yet been released, I estimate that the U.S. topped 4 million total road deaths sometime in the spring of 2024.

How many of those are pedestrians and bicyclists? Analysts didn’t do a great job of separating out the pedestrian and cyclist deaths in the early years , but based on later trends, my estimate is that some 930,000 pedestrians and bicyclists have been killed by automobiles in the U.S.

How many of those deaths do we blame on big cars or bad streets? The answer is, very few.

As I show in my new book, “ Killed by a Traffic Engineer: Shattering the Delusion that Science Underlies our Transportation System ,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls road user error the “ critical reason” behind 94% of crashes, injuries and deaths .

Crash data backs that up.

Police investigate crashes and inevitably look to see which road users, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, are most at fault. It’s easy to do because in almost any crash, road user error appears to be the obvious problem.

This approach helps insurance companies figure out who needs to pay. It also helps automakers and traffic engineers rationalize away all these deaths. Everyone – except the families and friends of these 4 million victims – goes to sleep at night feeling good that bad-behaving road users just need more education or better enforcement.

But road user error only scratches the surface of the problem.

Who creates dangerous streets?

When traffic engineers build an overly wide street that looks more like a freeway , and a speeding driver in a Canyonero crashes, subsequent crash data blames the driver for speeding.

When traffic engineers provide lousy crosswalks separated by long distances , and someone jaywalks and gets hit by that speeding Canyonero driver, one or both of these road users will be blamed in the official crash report.

And when automakers build gargantuan vehicles that can easily go double the speed limit and fill them with distracting touchscreens , crash data will still blame the road users for almost anything bad that happens.

These are the sorts of systemic conditions that lead to many so-called road user errors. Look just below the surface, though, and it becomes clear that many human errors represent the typical, rational behaviors of typical, rational road users given the transportation system and vehicle options we put in front of them.

Look more deeply, and you can start to see how our underlying crash data gives everyone a pass but the road users themselves. Everyone wants a data-driven approach to road safety, but today’s standard view of crash data lets automakers, insurance companies and policymakers who shape vehicle safety standards off the hook for embiggening these ever-larger cars and light-duty trucks.

It also absolves traffic engineers, planners and policymakers of blame for creating a transportation system where for most Americans, the only rational choice for getting around is a car .

Understanding road behavior

Automakers want to sell cars and make money. And if bigger SUVs seem safer to potential customers, while also being much more profitable , it’s easy to see how interactions between road users and car companies – making seemingly rational decisions – have devolved into an SUV arms race.

Even though these same vehicles are less safe for pedestrians, bicyclists and those in opposing vehicles , the current data-driven approach to road safety misses that part of the story.

This can’t all be fixed at once. But by pursuing business as usual, automakers and traffic engineers will continue wasting money on victim-blaming campaigns or billboards placed high over a road telling drivers to pay attention to the road .

A better starting point would be remaking the U.S.’s allegedly data-driven approach to road safety by reinventing our understanding of the crash data that informs it all.

The key is starting to ask why. Why did these road users act as they did? Why didn’t they follow the rules that were laid out for them? Bad road user behavior shouldn’t be excused, but a bit of digging below the surface of crash data unearths a completely different story.

Figuring out which road user is most at fault may be useful for law enforcement and insurance companies, but it doesn’t give transportation engineers, planners, policymakers or automakers much insight into what they can do better. Even worse, it has kept them from realizing that they might be doing anything wrong.

NHTSA Estimates Traffic Fatalities Continued to Decline in First Quarter of 2024

Projections show an eighth consecutive quarterly decline in traffic fatalities

June 24, 2024 | Washington, DC

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today released its first projections for traffic fatalities in 2024 , estimating that 8,650 people died in traffic crashes in the first three months of the year. This represents a decrease of about 3.2% as compared to 8,935 estimated fatalities during the same period in 2023.

The first quarter preliminary data marks the eighth consecutive quarterly decline in traffic fatalities, a trend that began in the second quarter of 2022.

The projected decrease comes as vehicle miles traveled increased 0.6% from January through March. The estimated fatality rate for the first three months of 2024 decreased to 1.13 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, down from the projected rate of 1.18 fatalities during the same period in 2023.

“We’re encouraged to see traffic fatalities continue to decline, but more work must be done to reduce these preventable tragedies on our roads,” NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said. “NHTSA is working diligently to save lives and ensure our roads are safe for everyone inside and outside of vehicles.”

NHTSA estimates that fatalities decreased in 30 states and Puerto Rico in the first quarter of 2024, while increases are projected in 19 states and the District of Columbia, as compared to the same period in 2023. One state remained unchanged.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation published its 2024 Progress Report , marking two years since the release of the original National Roadway Safety Strategy on Jan. 27, 2022. The Departmentwide adoption of the safe system approach remains the foundation of the NRSS’ implementation and is pivotal to addressing the fatality crisis on our roads. The progress report provides an update on the Department’s efforts to address serious and fatal injuries on our roadways and details the Department’s accomplishments related to addressing the NRSS actions in 2023. The most significant actions in 2023 include:

  • Awarded $1.7 billion in funding to improve roadway safety at the local, regional, and tribal levels through the Safe Streets and Roads for All discretionary grant program. More than 1,000 communities received funding, representing close to 70% of all Americans.
  • Accelerated the deployment of new vehicle safety technologies through rulemakings for automatic emergency braking, including for pedestrians, on all new passenger vehicles, as well as heavy vehicles such as commercial trucks.
  • Initiated an advance notice of proposed rulemaking for impaired-driving prevention technology standards to inform requirements that will deter behaviors such as alcohol-impaired driving.
  • Updated key road safety regulations such as the new edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices , and revised guidance to encourage states using federal-aid funds to use repaving and rehabilitation projects to improve safety for all road users.
  • Expanded the use and support of the National Emergency Medical Services Information System by accepting data from all 50 states, two territories and the District of Columbia.
  • Welcomed more than 123 organizations that have joined as Allies in Action of the NRSS, including 36 state transportation agencies and safety offices.

Road engineers 'invite crashes,' and a professor calls them to task

Drivers and pedestrians always get blamed, but he argues the road itself is at fault.

essay on road accident with quotes

The primary role of a traffic engineer is ostensibly to promote safety on the road: a safer environment for drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians — the road users who every year suffer grievous injuries or death on highways.

But in an essay written for The Conversation website by Wesley Marshall, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado, the author argues that traffic engineers have a major responsibility for these accidents and injuries and ignore the real reasons for them.

His piece is titled, “Traffic engineers build roads that invite crashes because they rely on outdated research and faulty data.”

“We underestimate our role in perpetuating bad outcomes, as well as the role that better engineering can play in designing safer communities and streets,“ Marshall writes.

He explains that ascribing fault for crashes to pedestrians, drivers, bikers — what he calls “road user error” — is a mistake, even though he cites a finding by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that calls road user error the “critical reason” behind 94 percent of crashes, injuries and deaths.

“How many of those deaths do we blame on big cars or bad streets?” he writes. “The answer is, very few. Police investigate crashes and inevitably look to see which road users, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, are most at fault.”

The crash data, Marshall suggests, absolve traffic engineers, planners and policymakers of blame “for creating a transportation system where for most Americans, the only rational choice for getting around is a car."

But the blame often lies there, he argues.

“When traffic engineers build an overly wide street that looks more like a freeway, and a speeding driver in a Canyonero crashes, subsequent crash data blames the driver for speeding," he writes. “When traffic engineers provide lousy crosswalks separated by long distances, and someone jaywalks and gets hit by that speeding Canyonero driver, one or both of these road users will be blamed in the official crash report. And when automakers build gargantuan vehicles that can easily go double the speed limit and fill them with distracting touchscreens, crash data will still blame the road users for almost anything bad that happens.”

Marshall offers up some possible solutions, including reassessing the interpretations of crash data and current thinking.

“Figuring out which road user is most at fault may be useful for law enforcement and insurance companies, but it doesn’t give transportation engineers, planners, policymakers or automakers much insight into what they can do better,“ he concludes. “Even worse, it has kept them from realizing that they might be doing anything wrong.”

Pune Porsche case: Cops to move SC against release of juvenile accused

 alt=

Maharashtra: The Pune police are planning to approach the Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court order for the release of a 17-year-old boy allegedly involved in the Porsche car accident here in May, a senior official said on Monday. The HC on June 25 directed that the boy be released immediately, saying the Juvenile Justice Board's (JJB) orders remanding him to an observation home were illegal and the law regarding juveniles must be implemented fully.

The teenager, who got bail hours after the accident on May 19, was sent to the observation home in Maharashtra's Pune city three days later following an outcry. After the HC order last week, the juvenile was released from the observation home and his custody was handed over to his paternal aunt. The order was passed on a petition filed by the boy's aunt, who claimed he was illegally detained.

The Pune police are planning to approach the Supreme Court against the Bombay HC order, Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar told PTI on Monday. As per the police, the teen was drunk and driving the luxury car belonging to his father, a real estate businessman, when it hit a two-wheeler in Kalyani Nagar area of Pune in the early hours of May 19, killing two IT professionals.

The juvenile's parents and grandfather are currently in jail in two different cases pertaining to the incident, including one of alleged swapping of blood samples of the boy and another case of alleged kidnapping and wrongful confinement of a family driver, who was threatened to take the blame that he was behind the wheels when the accident took place. A Pune court is expected to pronounce its order on Monday on the bail plea of the boy's father and grandfather in the case of alleged kidnapping the driver.

After the accident in the early hours of May 19, the boy was granted bail the same day by the JJB and ordered to be under the care and supervision of his parents and grandfather. It also asked the boy to write a 300-word essay on road safety.

As the quick bail on lenient terms led to public outrage, the police filed an application before the JJB, seeking amendment of the bail order. On May 22, the board ordered the boy to be taken into custody and remanded him to the observation home.
